Molecular picture of electric double layers with weakly adsorbed water

Water adsorption energy, Eads, is a key physical quantity in sustainable chemical technologies such as (photo)electrocatalytic water splitting, water desalination, and water harvesting. In many of these applications, the electrode surface is operated outside the point (potential) of zero charge, which attracts counter-ions to form the electric double layer and controls the surface properties. Here, by applying density functional theory-based finite-field molecular dynamics simulations, we have studied the effect of water adsorption energy Eads on surface acidity and the Helmholtz capacitance of BiVO4 as an example of metal oxide electrodes with weakly chemisorbed water. This allows us to establish the effect of Eads on the coordination number, the H-bond network, and the orientation of chemisorbed water by comparing an oxide series composed of BiVO4, TiO2, and SnO2. In particular, it is found that a positive correlation exists between the degree of asymmetry ΔCH in the Helmholtz capacitance and the strength of Eads. This correlation is verified and extended further to graphene-like systems with physisorbed water, where the electric double layers (EDLs) are controlled by electronic charge rather than proton charge as in the oxide series. Therefore, this work reveals a general relationship between water adsorption energy Eads and EDLs, which is relevant to both electrochemical reactivity and the electrowetting of aqueous interfaces.

Tailor-made polymer tracers reveal the role of clay minerals on colloidal transport in carbonate media

HYPOTHESIS

Host rock weathering and incipient pedogenesis result in the exposition of minerals, e.g., clay minerals in sedimentary limestones. Once exposed, these minerals provide the surfaces for fluid-solid interactions that control the fate of dissolved or suspended compounds such as organic matter and colloids. However, the functional and compositional diversity of organic matter and colloids limits the assessment of reactivity and availability of clay mineral interfaces. Such assessment demands a mobile compound with strong affinity to clay surfaces that is alien to the subsurface.

EXPERIMENT

We approached this challenge by using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as interfacial tracer in limestone weathering experiments.

FINDINGS

PEG adsorption and transport was dependent on the availability of clay mineral surfaces and carbonate dissolution dynamics. In addition, PEG adsorption featured adsorption-desorption hysteresis which retained PEG mass on clay mineral surfaces. This resulted in different PEG transport for experiments conducted consecutively in the same porous medium. As such, PEG transport was reconstructed with a continuum-scale model parametrized by a Langmuir-type isotherm including hysteresis. Thus, we quantified the influence of exposed clay mineral surfaces on the transport of organic colloids in carbonate media. This renders PEG a suitable model colloid tracer for the assessment of clay surface exposition in porous media.

Monitoring Photo-Fenton and Photo-Electro-Fenton process of contaminants emerging concern by a gas diffusion electrode using Ca10-xFex-yWy(PO4)6(OH)2 nanoparticles as heterogeneous catalyst

The catalytic performance of modified hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, Ca10-xFex-yWy(PO4)6(OH)2, was applied for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), fast green FCF (FG) and norfloxacin (NOR). XPS analysis pointed to the successful partial replacement of Ca by Fe. Under photo-electro-Fenton process, the catalyst Ca4FeII1·92W0·08FeIII4(PO4)6(OH)2 was combined with UVC radiation and electrogenerated H2O2 in a Printex L6 carbon-based gas diffusion electrode. The application of only 10 mA cm-2 resulted in 100% discoloration of MB and FG dyes in 50 min of treatment at pH 2.5, 7.0 and 9.0. The proposed treatment mechanism yielded maximum TOC removal of ∼80% and high mineralization current efficiency of ∼64%. Complete degradation of NOR was obtained in 40 min, and high mineralization of ∼86% was recorded after 240 min of treatment. Responses obtained from LC-ESI-MS/MS are in line with the theoretical Fukui indices and the ECOSAR data. The study enabled us to predict the main degradation route and the acute and chronic toxicity of the by-products formed during the contaminants degradation.

Influence of Hydrolyzed Metal Ions and Surfactants on the Phase Transfer of Al2O3, SiO2, and SnO2

There are various possibilities for changing the surface properties of particles. In this work, the charge reversal on different metal oxides with different electrolytes is investigated and whether this allows a change in wettability due to a subsequent adsorption of surfactants, e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). It is investigated if the materials of the particles differ only by the isoelectric point or if the surface chemistry of the materials has an influence on the charge reversal as well. Furthermore, the adsorption of SDS as an anionic surfactant is examined, which is also characterized by a second charge reversal and related to a sign change of the electrophoretic mobility μe. Finally, it is examined whether the adsorption of the hydrolyzed metal ions and the subsequent adsorption of SDS are effective enough to hydrophobize the particles and allow phase transfer from the aqueous to second nonaqueous liquid phase. In addition, the influence of pH is investigated because the hydrolyzed metal cations are formed only in a certain pH range, which means that the bridge formed between the particle surface and the surfactant works only in a certain pH range, which would allow pH-selective extraction of the particle system into the second nonaqueous liquid phase.

Molecular Adhesion of a Pilus-Derived Peptide Involved in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilm Formation on Non-Polar ZnO-Surfaces

Bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on abiotic surfaces are initiated by the adhesion of peptides and proteins. Understanding the adhesion of such peptides and proteins at a molecular level thus represents an important step toward controlling and suppressing biofilm formation on technological and medical materials. This study investigates the molecular adhesion of a pilus-derived peptide that facilitates biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a multidrug-resistant opportunistic pathogen frequently encountered in healthcare settings. Single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) was performed on chemically etched ZnO11 2 ‾ 0 ${\left(11\bar{2}0\right)}$ surfaces to gather insights about peptide adsorption force and its kinetics. Metal-free click chemistry for the fabrication of peptide-terminated SMFS cantilevers was performed on amine-terminated gold cantilevers and verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and polarization-modulated infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and XPS analyses reveal stable topographies and surface chemistries of the substrates that are not affected by SMFS. Rupture events described by the worm-like chain model (WLC) up to 600 pN were detected for the non-polar ZnO surfaces. The dissociation barrier energy at zero force ΔG(0), the transition state distance xb and bound-unbound dissociation rate at zero force koff (0) for the single crystalline substrate indicate that coordination and hydrogen bonds dominate the peptide/surface interaction.

Glassy Powder Derived from Waste Printed Circuit Boards for Methylene Blue Adsorption

Electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world and Europe is classified as the first producer in terms of per capita amount. To reduce the environmental impact of e-waste, it is important to recycle it. This work shows the possibility of reusing glassy substrates, derived from the MW-assisted acidic leaching of Waste Printed Circuit Boards (WPCBs), as an adsorbent material. The results revealed an excellent adsorption capability against methylene blue (MB; aqueous solutions in the concentration range 10-5 M-2 × 10-5 M, at pH = 7.5). Comparisons were performed with reference samples such as activated carbons (ACs), the adsorbent mostly used at the industrial level; untreated PCB samples; and ground glass slides. The obtained results show that MW-treated WPCB powder outperformed both ground glass and ground untreated PCBs in MB adsorption, almost matching AC adsorption. The use of this new adsorbent obtained through the valorization of e-waste offers advantages not only in terms of cost but also in terms of environmental sustainability.

Identified Small Open Reading Frame-Encoded Peptides in Human Serum with Nanoparticle Protein Coronas

The low-molecular-weight proteins (LMWP) in serum and plasma are related to various human diseases and can be valuable biomarkers. A small open reading frame-encoded peptide (SEP) is one kind of LMWP, which has been found to function in many bioprocesses and has also been found in human blood, making it a potential biomarker. The detection of LMWP by a mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomic assay is often inhibited by the wide dynamic range of serum/plasma protein abundance. Nanoparticle protein coronas are a newly emerging protein enrichment method. To analyze SEPs in human serum, we have developed a protocol integrated with nanoparticle protein coronas and liquid chromatography (LC)/MS/MS. With three nanoparticles, TiO2, Fe3O4@SiO2, and Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2, we identified 164 new SEPs in the human serum sample. Fe3O4@SiO2 and a nanoparticle mixture obtained the maximum number and the largest proportion of identified SEPs, respectively. Compared with acetonitrile-based extraction, nanoparticle protein coronas can cover more small proteins and SEPs. The magnetic nanoparticle is also fit for high-throughput parallel protein separation before LC/MS. This method is fast, efficient, reproducible, and easy to operate in 96-well plates and centrifuge tubes, which will benefit the research on SEPs and biomarkers.

Structural Evolution of Ultrathin SrFeO3-δ Films during Oxygen Evolution Reaction Revealed by In Situ Electrochemical Stress Measurements

We report the electrochemical stress analysis of SrFeO3-δ (SFO) films deposited on Au substrates during oxygen evolution reactions (OERs). Our in situ analysis of Au reveals conversion reactions from Au to Au(OH)3, AuOOH, and AuOx during the OER. Au reactions cause a monotonic compressive stress on surfaces assigned to the formation of Au hydroxides and oxides. Electrochemical stress analysis of SrFeO3-δ/Au shows a dramatically different behavior during the OER, which we attribute to structural evolutions and conversion reactions, such as the conversion of SFO to iron (oxy)hydroxides. Interestingly, electrochemical stress analysis of SrFeO3-δ/Au shows a tensile trend, which evolves with cycling history. Electrochemical stress analysis of SFO films before the onset of the OER shows in situ changes, which cause tensile stresses when cycling to 1.2 V. We attribute these stresses to the formation of Fe2+δOδ(OH)2-δ (0 ≤ δ ≤ 1.5)-type materials where δ approaches 1.5 at higher potentials. At potentials higher than 1.2 V and during OER, surface stress response is rather stable, which we assign to the full conversion of SFO to iron (oxy)hydroxides. This analysis provides insight into the reaction mechanism and details of in situ structural changes of iron perovskites during the OER in alkaline environments.

Characterization of Magnetic Biochar Modified Using the One-Step and Electrochemical Methods and Its Impact on Phosphate Adsorption

The properties and phosphate adsorption capability of the one-step method and electrochemical method in modifying peanut shell biochar have been determined. The one-step method deposits MgO and Fe3O4 onto biochar through chemical impregnation and regularly affects the functional groups and magnetic separation of biochar, thereby enhancing its ability to adsorb phosphate. In contrast, the electrochemical method is not favorable for modifying functional groups of biochar but can promote phosphate adsorption because of the formation of MgFe2O4 and Fe3O4 using electrolysis. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics data suggest that adsorption is monolayer onto a homogeneous surface and phosphate adsorption could be controlled by chemical processes. Biochar with the addition of both Fe2+ and Mg2+ shows better phosphate adsorption capability than those with barely any Fe2+ additions. It was concluded that the one-step method is a better modification method than the electrochemical method for enhancing the phosphate adsorption capability of biochars.

A review of flotation reagents for bastnäsite-(Ce) rare earth ore

Given the indispensability and immense value of rare earth elements for scientific and technological advancements in the 21st century, extracting high-quality rare earth resources from nature has become a global priority. Bastnäsite-(Ce) is one of the known rare earth minerals with high rare earth content and wide distribution, which occupies a pivotal position in human life and high-end production activities, making its efficient development and utilization crucial. In recent years, research on separating bastnäsite-(Ce) from gangue minerals has focused on the flotation process, with flotation reagents playing a critical role in achieving effective separation. This paper provides a detailed summary of current research on the behavior of bastnäsite-(Ce) flotation agents on minerals, their interaction with mineral surfaces during flotation separation, and outlines future prospects for further research.

Comparison of pesticide adsorption efficiencies of zeolites and zeolite-carbon composites and their regeneration possibilities

The presence of pesticides in our environment is a consequence of intensive industrial and civilizational development, necessitating the search for effective and safe methods to remove them. We suggest utilizing zeolite X and a zeolite-carbon composite, obtained through the chemical transformation of fly ash, as pesticide sorbents. To increase the sorption efficiency of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA), carbendazim, and simazine, we functionalized the zeolite materials with cationic (hexadecyltrimethylammonium) and nonionic (Triton X-100) surfactants. We used transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and point of zero charge (pHpzc) analysis to characterize the functionalized sorbent materials. Our results indicate that cationic surfactants significantly enhance the adsorption of 2,4-D and MCPA. In contrast, carbendazim and simazine exhibit maximum sorption on the unmodified zeolite-carbon composite. The sorption mechanism is intricate, with physical sorption predominating, primarily due to electrostatic interactions between the protonated binding sites of the adsorbents and the negatively charged pesticide molecules. Regeneration tests demonstrated that ethanol is the most effective in regenerating zeolite-carbon composite with adsorbed MCPA and 2,4-D, while thermal regeneration was not possible. Adsorbents with simazine and carbendazim can be regenerated using both thermal and ethanol methods, but the thermal regeneration of zeolite with adsorbed simazine is more efficient. Utilizing functionalized zeolite materials obtained from industrial waste, such as fly ash, could provide an efficient way to remove pesticides from the environment.

The pH dependent surface charging and points of zero charge. X. Update

Surfaces are often characterized by their points of zero charge (PZC) and isoelectric points (IEP). Different authors use these terms for different quantities, which may be equal to the actual PZC under certain conditions. Several popular methods lead to results which are inappropriately termed PZC. This present review is limited to zero-points obtained in the presence of inert electrolytes (halides, nitrates, and perchlorates of the 1st group metals). IEP are reported for all kinds of materials. PZC of metal oxides obtained as common intersection points of potentiometric curves for 3 or more ionic strengths (or by means of equivalent methods) are also reported, while the apparent PZC obtained by mass titration, pH-drift method, etc. are deliberately neglected. The results published in the recent publications and older results overlooked in the previous compilations by the same author are reported. The PZC/IEP are accompanied by information on the temperature and on the nature and concentration of supporting electrolyte (if available). The references to previous reviews by the same author allow to compare the newest results with the PZC/IEP of similar materials from the older literature.

High-Efficiency Removal of Lead and Nickel Using Four Inert Dry Biomasses: Insights into the Adsorption Mechanisms

In this study, inert dry bioadsorbents prepared from corn cob residues (CCR), cocoa husk (CH), plantain peels (PP), and cassava peels (CP) were used as adsorbents of heavy metal ions (Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺) in single-batch adsorption experiments from synthetic aqueous solutions. The physicochemical properties of the bioadsorbents and the adsorption mechanisms were evaluated using different experimental techniques. The results showed that electrostatic attraction, cation exchange, and surface complexation were the main mechanisms involved in the adsorption of metals onto the evaluated bioadsorbents. The percentage removal of Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺ increased with higher adsorbent dosage, with Pb²⁺ exhibiting greater biosorption capacity than Ni²⁺. The bioadsorbents showed promising potential for adsorbing Pb²⁺ with monolayer adsorption capacities of 699.267, 568.794, 101.535, and 116.820 mg/g when using PP, CCR, CH, and CP, respectively. For Ni²⁺, Langmuir's parameter had values of 10.402, 26.984, 18.883, and 21.615, respectively, for PP, CCR, CH, and CP. Kinetics data fitted by the pseudo-second-order model revealed that the adsorption rate follows this order: CH > CP > CCR > PP for Pb²⁺, and CH > CCR > PP > CP for Ni²⁺. The adsorption mechanism was found to be controlled by ion exchange and precipitation. These findings suggest that the dry raw biomasses of corn cob residues, cocoa husk, cassava, and plantain peels can effectively remove lead and nickel, but further research is needed to explore their application in industrial-scale and continuous systems.

Coacervates Forming Coexisting Phases on a Mineral Surface

Minerals played a crucial role in the chemical evolution of small molecules into biopolymers. Yet, it is still not clear how the minerals are related to the formation and the evolution of protocells on early Earth. In this work, using the coacervate formed by quaternized dextran (Q-dextran) and single-stranded oligonucleotides (ss-oligo) as the protocell model, we systematically studied the phase separation of Q-dextran and ss-oligo on the muscovite surface. Serving as rigid and 2D polyelectrolytes, the muscovite surface can be treated by Q-dextran to become negatively charged, neutral, or positively charged. We observed that Q-dextran and ss-oligo form uniform coacervates on naked and neutral muscovite surfaces, while they form biphasic coacervates containing Q-dextran-rich phases and ss-oligo-rich phases on positively or negatively charged muscovite surfaces that were pretreated by Q-dextran. The evolution of the phases is caused by the redistribution of the components as the coacervate touches the surface. Our study indicates that the mineral surface could be a potential driving force for the formation of protocells with hierarchical structures and desirable functions on prebiotic Earth.

Adsorptive removal of dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) using novel nanoparticles based on cationic surfactant-coated titania nanoparticles

A novel nanomaterial based on cationic surfactant-coated TiO₂ nanoparticle (CCTN) was systematically fabricated in this work. Synthesized titania nanoparticles were thoroughly characterized by XRD, FT-IR, HR-TEM, TEM-EDX, SEM with EDX mapping, BET, and ζ potential measurements. The adsorption of cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), on TiO₂ was studied under various pH and ionic strength conditions. Adsorption of CTAB on TiO₂ increased with ionic strength increment in the presence of hemimicelle monolayer structure, indicating that nonelectrostatic and electrostatic forces control CTAB uptake. CTAB adsorption isotherms on TiO₂ were according to a two-step model. Potential application in pesticide removal of 2,4-dichorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) using CCTN was also studied. Optimum parameters for 2,4-D treatment through adsorption technique were pH 5, adsorption time of 120 min, and CCTN dosage of 10 mg·mL^-1. Very low 2,4-D removal efficiency using TiO₂ without CTAB coating was found to be approximately 28.5% whereas the removal efficiency was up to about 90% by using CCTN under optimum conditions, and the maximum adsorption capacity of 12.79 mg·g^-1 was found. Adsorption isotherms of 2,4-D on CCTN were more suitable with the Langmuir model than Freundlich. Adsorption mechanisms of 2,4-D on CCTN were mainly governed by Columbic attraction based on isotherms and surface charge changes.

Removal of pharmaceuticals from aqueous medium by alginate/polypyrrole/ZnFe2O4 beads via magnetic field enhanced adsorption

The physicochemical and structural characteristics of the magnetic materials can be modulable due to exposition to a magnetic field, which allows, for example, to enhance its adsorption performance. In this sense, this study describes the preparation of magnetic beads of alginate/polypyrrole/ZnFe₂O₄ (Alg/PPy/ZnFe₂O₄) and investigates the effect of an external magnetic field (EMF) on their adsorption performance towards two overconsumed drugs, acetaminophen (ACT) and ibuprofen (IBU). Characterization analyses confirmed the composite formation and magnetic nature of Alg/PPy/ZnFe₂O₄. Conversely to the pristine beads (Alg/PPy), the presence of an EMF altered the swelling and pH_PZC behavior of the magnetic beads, indicating that these properties are affected by this external stimulus. Batch experiments revealed that the amount of ACT and IBU adsorbed by Alg/PPy/ZnFe₂O₄ in 60-70 min is appreciably high (106.7 ad 108.2 mg/g). The presence of an EMF modulated the structure of Alg/PPy/ZnFe₂O₄ beads enhancing their adsorption capacity towards ACT and IBU by 14% and 12% compared to Alg/PPy. Kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption of both drugs on Alg/PPy/ZnFe2O4 followed a pseudo-second-order. Besides, the adsorption mechanism was fitted by the Freundlich isotherm. Reuse experiments showed that the magnetic beads keep a high adsorption capacity for both drugs even after ten consecutive reuse cycles. The results presented here suggest that magnetic-responsive materials like Alg/PPy/ZnFe₂O₄ are prominent and modulable tools for improving the treatment of water/wastewater containing this class of contaminants.

Photoelectrochemical degradation of selected organic substances on Fe2O3 photoanodes: a comparison with TiO2

The photoelectrochemical degradation of selected aromatic substances, acid orange 7 (AO7), salicylic acid (SA), benzoic acid (BA), and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) was studied on hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) and compared with titanium dioxide (TiO₂), both deposited as thin films on conducting substrates (FTO/glass). Batch type reactors were used under backside and front side illumination. Electrical bias was applied on the semiconducting electrodes, such that only valence band processes leading to oxidative pathways were followed. The initial Faradaic efficiency, f₀, of degradation processes was determined from the UV-Vis absorbance decrease of the starting materials. f₀ for 1 mM AO7 degradation in 0.01 M sulphuric acid was found to be 7.5%. When the pH of the solution was neutral (pH 7.2) or alkaline (pH 13), f₀ decreased to 1.7%. For 1 mM SA, f₀ was 6.2% on hematite photoanodes and 6.1% on titanium dioxide. For 1 mM benzoic acid and 4-chlorophenol, f₀ was an order of magnitude lower, but only on hematite. This is ascribed to the lack of OH· radical formation on hematite, which seems to be essential for the photooxidation of these compounds.

Peppermint-Mediated Green Synthesis of Nano ZrO2 and Its Adsorptive Removal of Cobalt from Water

Zirconium oxide nanoparticles (ZrO2NPs) were green synthesized for the first time using an aqueous peppermint extract as a precipitating and capping agent. Addition of the extract to Zr4+ solution was followed by calcination of the resulting precipitate at 570 and 700 °C to form ZrO2NPs570 and ZrO2NPs700, respectively. These oxides were characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and BET surface area analysis, and used as adsorbents for cobalt ions (Co2+) in water. The effects of pH, initial Co2+ concentration, ZrO2NPs mass, and contact time on adsorption efficiency were studied. Characterization results showed formation of cubic ZrO2 with average crystallite sizes (XRD data) of 6.27 and 7.26 nm for ZrO2NPs570 and ZrO2NPs700, respectively. TEM images of the two oxides exhibited nearly spherical nanoparticles and BET surface area measurements indicated the formation of mesoporous oxides having surface areas of 94.8 and 62.4 m2/g, respectively. The results of the adsorption study confirmed that the synthesized ZrO2NPs can be efficiently used for the adsorption of Co2+ from water. The uptake of Co2+ from the treated solution is favored at pH values higher than its point of zero charge (6.0). In addition, the adsorption of Co2+ by ZrO2 follows a pseudo-second order kinetics (R2 = 1.0) and can be explained by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm (R2 = 0.973).

Effects and interactions of metal oxides in microparticle-enhanced cultivation of filamentous microorganisms

Filamentous microorganisms are used as molecular factories in industrial biotechnology. In 2007, a new approach to improve productivity in submerged cultivation was introduced: microparticle-enhanced cultivation (MPEC). Since then, numerous studies have investigated the influence of microparticles on the cultivation. Most studies considered MPEC a morphology engineering approach, in which altered morphology results in increased productivity. But sometimes similar morphological changes lead to decreased productivity, suggesting that this hypothesis is not a sufficient explanation for the effects of microparticles. Effects of surface chemistry on particles were paid little attention, as particles were often considered chemically-inert and bioinert. However, metal oxide particles strongly interact with their environment. This review links morphological, physical, and chemical properties of microparticles with effects on culture broth, filamentous morphology, and molecular biology. More precisely, surface chemistry effects of metal oxide particles lead to ion leaching, adsorption of enzymes, and generation of reactive oxygen species. Therefore, microparticles interfere with gene regulation, metabolism, and activity of enzymes. To enhance the understanding of microparticle-based morphology engineering, further interactions between particles and cells are elaborated. The presented description of phenomena occurring in MPEC eases the targeted choice of microparticles, and thus, contributes to improving the productivity of microbial cultivation technology.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Core-Shell ZnO@SiO2 Nanoparticles and Application in Antibiotic and Bacteria Removal

A novel core-shell nanomaterial, ZnO@SiO₂, based on rice husk for antibiotic and bacteria removal, was successfully fabricated. The ZnO@SiO₂ nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-vis (DR-UV-vis) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and ζ-potential measurements. β-Lactam antibiotic amoxicillin (AMX) was removed using ZnO@SiO₂ nanoparticles with an efficiency greater than 90%, while Escherichia coli removal was higher than 91%. The optimum effective conditions for AMX removal using ZnO@SiO₂, including solution pH, adsorption time, and ZnO@SiO₂ dosage, were 8, 90 min, and 25 mg/mL, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 52.1 mg/g, much higher than those for other adsorbents. Adsorption isotherms of AMX on ZnO@SiO₂ were more in accordance with the Freundlich model than the Langmuir model. The electrostatic attraction between negative species of AMX and the positively charged ZnO@SiO₂ surface induced adsorption, while the removal of E. coli was governed by both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Our study demonstrates that ZnO@SiO₂ based on rice husk is a useful core-shell nanomaterial for antibiotic and bacteria removal from water.

Strong Isotopic Fractionation of Oxygen in TiO2 Obtained by Surface-Enhanced Solid-State Diffusion

Isotopically pure semiconductors have important applications for cooling electronic devices and quantum computing and sensing. Raw materials of sufficiently high isotopic purity are expensive and difficult to obtain; therefore, a post-synthesis method for removing isotopic impurities would be valuable. Through isotopic self-diffusion measurements of oxygen in rutile TiO₂ single crystals immersed in water, we demonstrate fractionation of ¹⁸O by a factor of 3 below natural abundance in a near-surface region up to 10 nm wide. The submerged surface injects O interstitials that displace lattice ¹⁸O deeper into the solid as a result of the statistics of interstitialcy-mediated diffusion combined with steep chemical gradients of O interstitials. Slightly acidic and slightly basic liquid solutions both enhance the fractionation and affect the details of isotopic profile shapes through several chemical and physical mechanisms.

Synthesis and Characterization of Catalytically Active Au Core─Pd Shell Nanoparticles Supported on Alumina

A two-step seeded-growth method was refined to synthesize Au@Pd core@shell nanoparticles with thin Pd shells, which were then deposited onto alumina to obtain a supported Au@Pd/Al₂O₃ catalyst active for prototypical CO oxidation. By the strict control of temperature and Pd/Au molar ratio and the use of l-ascorbic acid for making both Au cores and Pd shells, a 1.5 nm Pd layer is formed around the Au core, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The core@shell structure and the Pd shell remain intact upon deposition onto alumina and after being used for CO oxidation, as revealed by additional X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy before and after the reaction. The Pd shell surface was characterized with in situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy using CO as a chemical probe during CO adsorption-desorption. The IR bands for CO ad-species on the Pd shell suggest that the shell exposes mostly low-index surfaces, likely Pd(111) as the majority facet. Generally, the IR bands are blue-shifted as compared to conventional Pd/alumina catalysts, which may be due to the different support materials for Pd, Au versus Al₂O₃, and/or less strain of the Pd shell. Frequencies obtained from density functional calculations suggest the latter to be significant. Further, the catalytic CO oxidation ignition-extinction processes were followed by in situ IR, which shows the common CO poisoning and kinetic behavior associated with competitive adsorption of CO and O₂ that is typically observed for noble metal catalysts.

Influence of Bacillus subtilis on the surface behavior and separation of talc and chlorite minerals

Bacillus subtilis was used as a bio-surface modifier to improve the floatability of talc mineral (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2) in the talc ore. The surface behavior of chlorite mineral as the main associated gangue with talc mineral was studied in the presence of B. subtilis using zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. The floatability of both minerals was investigated as a function of pH, contact time, and concentration of B. subtilis. The results showed that the zeta potential of the talc mineral was strongly influenced by the treatment with B. subtilis. The maximum separation efficiency of talc from chlorite was achieved at pH 4. A talc concentrate with 98% quality and about 95% recovery was prepared from a binary talc-chlorite mixture containing 85% talc under optimum conditions of 8 × 105 cells/mL B. subtilis, pH 4, 35°C, and a contact time of 10 min.

Enhancement Properties of Zr Modified Porous Clay Heterostructures for Adsorption of Basic-Blue 41 Dye: Equilibrium, Regeneration, and Single Batch Design Adsorber

Zirconium porous clay heterostructures (Zr-PCH) were synthesized using intercalated clay minerals by zirconium species with different contents of zirconium. The presence of zirconium and silica species was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance. The insertion of zirconium improved the thermal stability, the specific surface area with a maximum of 950 m²/g, and the acidity concentration of 0.993 mol of protons per g of solid. These materials were used to adsorb the basic blue-41 from aqueous solution. The adsorption efficiency was examined at different conditions, with a maximum adsorbed amount of 346 mg/g as estimated from Langmuir model. This value was dependent on zirconium content in the PCHs. The adsorption process was found to be favorable and spontaneous. The efficiency of the spent materials was maintained after five reuse cycles with a decrease by 15% of the original value for a particular Zr-PCH material with a Zr content of 6.82%. Single stage batch adsorber was suggested using the mass balance equation and Langmuir isotherm model. The amount of PCH materials required depended on the target percentage of adsorption at specific volume and initial concentration of the basic-blue-41 dye solution.

Revisiting the mechanisms of nitrite ions and ammonia removal from aqueous solutions: photolysis versus photocatalysis

Nitrite ions and ammonia are widespread forms of inorganic water pollutants. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of their photolytic and photocatalytic reactions under UV-A irradiation are still fully undisclosed, particularly, at different pH values under aerobic and inert atmospheres. Herein, we have studied the photolytic decomposition of nitrite ions under different conditions using 365 nm UV-A LED as a light source instead of mercury lamps that emit photons in the UV-B region and generate a lot of heat. The results indicated that the rate of nitrite disproportionation in the dark at pH ≤ 3.0 is remarkably high relative to the rate of the photolytic decomposition. At pH ˃ 3, the photolytic reaction is negligible and nitrite ions showed considerable stability. In contrast, the photocatalytic oxidation of nitrite ions over TiO₂ photocatalysts, namely, TiO₂P25, TiO₂UV100, and TiO₂ anatase/brookite mixture proceeds at pH ˃ 3.0. TiO₂ P25 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity at pH 5. Interestingly, the photolytic simultaneous removal of nitrite ions and ammonia was possible at pH 9.0 in the absence of oxygen (Ar atmosphere). A 42.69 ± 0.66%, 27.75 ± 1.7%, and 32.74 ± 0.59% of nitrogen calculated based on nitrite, ammonia, and both of them, respectively, can be removed after 6 h of UV-A irradiation. The selectivity of N₂ evolution was 77.6%. The nitrogen removal rate was significantly reduced in the presence of TiO₂ photocatalyst evincing that TiO₂ photocatalysis is applicable for nitrite ions oxidation, whereas the photolytic process is better suited for the simultaneous removal of nitrite ions and ammonia.

Metal (hydr)oxide surface precipitates and their effects on potassium sorption

Surface precipitation has been shown to occur on rapid time scales in clay and metal oxide mineral systems. The formation of surface precipitates is hypothesized to present new potential sorption sites for potassium (K), where K can become incorporated into newly formed interlayer spaces (e.g., between tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral stacked sheets). The objective of this study is to determine the effects of newly formed mineral surface precipitates on K sorption. Potassium adsorption experiments were conducted by utilizing Al₂O₃ and SiO₂ sorbents in the presence of various cations (magnesium, zinc, and nickel) that helped to catalyze the formation of surface precipitates. Dissolved concentrations of elements were monitored via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Solids were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), and K surface complexation was analyzed via X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated bayerite, layered double hydroxides (LDH), and silicated LDH were formed as reaction products, thus creating new surface sites for potential K adsorption. The presence of Si increased K adsorption perhaps due to its role in the formation of LDH surface precipitates. When the differences between observed and theoretical surface area normalized K sorption densities were averaged, a 31% increase in K adsorption was observed in the presence of Si. XANES analysis indicated that the binding mechanism of K to Si is different than that of K to Al, perhaps due to the presence of inner-sphere complexation of K to Al-oxide. Samples reacted for one month versus one week yielded more intense XANES post-edge peaks which indicated that the K sorption complex changes over time. Overall, our findings provide novel insights into the mechanisms of K fixation in soil and has high implication in providing improved K fertilizer recommendation to growers.

Applicability of the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann theory to contact angle problems and application to the carbon dioxide-brine-solid systems

In colloidal science and bioelectrostatics, the linear Poisson Boltzmann equation (LPBE) has been used extensively for the calculation of potential and surface charge density. Its fundamental assumption rests on the premises of low surface potential. In the geological sequestration of carbon dioxide in saline aquifers, very low pH conditions coupled with adsorption induced reduction of surface charge density result in low pH conditions that fit into the LPB theory. In this work, the Gouy-Chapman model of the electrical double layer has been employed in addition to the LPBE theory to develop a contact angle model that is a second-degree polynomial in pH. Our model contains the point of zero charge pH of solid surface. To render the model applicable to heterogeneous surfaces, we have further developed a model for the effective value of the point of zero charge pH. The point of zero charge pH model when integrated into our model enabled us to determine the point of zero charge pH of sandstone, quartz and mica using literature based experimental data. In this regard, a literature based thermodynamic model was used to calculate carbon dioxide solubility and pH of aqueous solution. Values of point of zero charge pH determined in this paper agree with reported ones. The novelty of our work stems from the fact that we have used the LPB theory in the context of interfacial science completely different from the classical approach, where the focus is on interparticle electrostatics involving colloidal stabilization.

The influence of fucoidan on stability, adsorption and electrokinetic properties of ZnO and TiO2 suspensions

Stabilization of nano-oxide suspensions is a very important process. Nowadays, synthetic polymers are used to increase stability of the colloidal systems. However, this solution is not ecological and incompatible with the principles of green chemistry. Instead of synthetic polymers, their natural counterparts can be used. Herein, we present the use of natural bioactive polysaccharide—fucoidan as a stabilizer of nano-zinc(II) and nano-titanium(IV) oxide suspensions. These two oxides are commercially available and are widely used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The turbidimetric studies (Turbiscan Lab) showed that the addition of fucoidan leads to the increase of stability and that the effect depends on the polymer concentration. To fully describe the systems’ stability, the adsorption (UV–Vis and FT-IR/PAS) and the electrokinetic properties (zeta potential and surface charge density) were studied. The obtained results indicate that fucoidan adsorbs by the electrostatic and non-electrostatic interactions on the used oxides forming the tight adsorption layer. The following paper thoroughly explains the stabilization mechanism of fucoidan toward the nano-oxide suspensions. Moreover, the presented results could be useful in the preparation of new cosmetic and pharmaceutical products containing nano-oxides.

Comparative degradation of 5-fluorouracil in aqueous solution by using H2O2-modified subcritical water, photocatalytic oxidation and electro-Fenton processes

This study investigated the degradation of the antineoplastic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) widely applied to treat different cancers using different advanced oxidation processes such as electro-Fenton (EF), photocatalysis with TiO_2, and H₂O₂-modified subcritical water oxidation. The treatment with the EF process was the most efficient compared to others. Interestingly, in the EF process, the oxidative degradation of 5-FU behaved differently depending on the anode used. At low currents (20 and 40 mA), Pt and DSA anodes performed better than BDD and Ti₄O₇ anodes. In contrast, at the higher current of 120 mA, the production of heterogeneous hydroxyl radicals (M(^•OH)) became important and contributed significantly to the oxidation of 5-FU in addition to homogeneous ^•OH generated in the bulk solution. These latter have high O₂-evolution overpotential leading to the high amount of physisorbed M(^•OH) compared to Pt and DSA. The oxidative degradation of 5-FU was then performed by titanium dioxide-based photocatalytic oxidation and subcritical water oxidation processes, both of which showed a lower degradation efficiency and failed to achieve complete mineralization. Finally, a comparison was performed in laboratory-scale, taking into account the following performance indicators: the degradation efficiency, the mineralization power, the cost of equipment and reagents, and the energy required for the treatment of 5-FU.

Surface Zeta Potential of ALD-Grown Metal-Oxide Films

Membranes are among the most promising technologies for energy-efficient and highly selective separations, and the surface-charge property of membranes plays a critical role in their broad applications. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) can deposit materials uniformly and with high precision and controllability on arbitrarily complex and large substrates, which renders it a promising method to tune the electrostatics of water/solid interfaces. However, a systematic study of surface-charge properties of ALD-grown films in aqueous environments is still lacking. In this work, 17 ALD-grown metal-oxide films are synthesized, and a comprehensive study of their water stability, wetting properties, and surface-charge properties is provided. This work represents a resource guide for researchers and ultimately for materials and process engineers, seeking to tailor interfacial charge properties of membranes and other porous water treatment components.

The pH dependent surface charging and points of zero charge. IX. Update

of the points of zero charge (PZC) and isoelectric points (IEP) of various materials published in the recent literature and of older results overlooked in the previous compilations. The roles of experimental conditions, especially of the temperature, of the nature and concentration of supporting electrolyte, and of the type of apparatus are emphasized. The newest results are compared with the zero points reported in previous reviews. Most recent studies were carried out with materials whose pH dependent surface charging is already well-documented, and the newest results are consistent with the older literature. Isoelectric points of Gd(OH)₃, Sm(OH)₃, and TeO₂ have been reported for the first time in the recent literature.

Vanadia-Zirconia and Vanadia-Hafnia Catalysts for Utilization of Volatile Organic Compound Emissions

Utilization is a sustainable and interesting alternative for the destructive treatment of volatile organic compounds due to avoided CO₂ emission. This work concentrates on the development of active and sulfur-tolerant catalysts for the utilization of contaminated methanol. Impregnated and sol-gel prepared vanadia-zirconia and vanadia-hafnia catalysts were thoroughly characterized by N₂ sorption, analytical (S)TEM, elemental analysis, XRD and Raman spectroscopy, and their performances were evaluated in formaldehyde production from methanol and methanethiol mixture. The results showed higher activity of the sol-gel prepared catalysts due to formation of mono- and polymeric vanadia species. Unfortunately, the most active vanadia sites were deactivated more easily than the metal-mixed oxide HfV₂O₇ and ZrV₂O₇ phases, as well as crystalline V₂O₅ observed in the impregnated catalysts. Metal-mixed oxide phases were formed in impregnated catalysts through formation of defects in HfO₂ and ZrO₂ structure during calcination at 600 °C, which was evidenced by Raman spectroscopy. The sol-gel prepared vanadia-zirconia and vanadia-hafnia catalysts were able to produce formaldehyde from contaminated methanol with high selectivity at temperature around 400 °C, while impregnated catalysts required 50-100 °C higher temperatures.

Filtration of Nanoparticle Agglomerates in Aqueous Colloidal Suspensions Exposed to an External Radio-Frequency Magnetic Field

The study investigated the phenomenon of the fast aggregation of single-domain magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in stable aqueous colloidal suspensions due to the presence of a radio-frequency (RF) magnetic field. Single-domain nanoparticles have specific magnetic properties, especially the unique property of absorbing the energy of such a field and releasing it in the form of heat. The localized heating causes the colloid to become unstable, leading to faster agglomeration of nanoparticles and, consequently, to rapid sedimentation. It has been shown that the destabilization of a stable magnetic nanoparticle colloid by the RF magnetic field can be used for the controlled filtration of larger agglomerates of the colloid solution. Two particular cases of stable colloidal suspensions were considered: a suspension of the bare nanoparticles in an alkaline solution and the silica-stabilized nanoparticles in a neutral solution. The obtained results are important primarily for biomedical applications and wastewater treatment.

Natural silicate nanoparticles: separation, characterization, and assessment of stability and perspectives of their use as reference nanomaterials

Natural nanomaterials, which play a very important role in environmental processes, are so far poorly studied. Firstly, the separation of nanoparticles from the bulk sample is a challenge. Secondly, the absence of reference natural nanomaterials makes it impossible to compare the results obtained by different researchers and develop a unified methodology for the separation and characterization of natural nanomaterials. Therefore, the development of reference natural nanomaterials is an urgent need of the environmental analytical chemistry. In this work, mineral nanoparticles (kaolinite, montmorillonite, muscovite, and quartz) have been studied as potential reference natural nanomaterials. A set of analytical methods including coiled-tube field-flow fractionation, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, laser diffraction, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission, and mass spectrometry are applied to the separation and characterization of nanoparticles. It has been shown by laser diffraction that 93-98% of separated mineral nanoparticles are in the size range from about 40 to 300 nm, while 2-7% have size up to 830 nm. The size range of particles is confirmed by electron microscopy. Major (Al, Na, K, Ca, Fe), trace (Ti, Co, Cu, Zn, Tl, Pb, Bi, etc.), and rare earth elements have been determined in the suspensions of kaolinite, montmorillonite, and muscovite nanoparticles. Based on Al content, the concentration of mineral nanoparticles in suspensions is estimated. Agglomeration stability (consistency of size distribution) of nanoparticles at pH 6-8 is assessed. It has been shown that muscovite nanoparticles are stable at pH 7-8, whereas montmorillonite nanoparticles are stable only at pH 8 for at least 4 weeks. A noticeable agglomeration of kaolinite nanoparticles is observed at pH 6-8. Due to the low concentration of quartz nanoparticles, their characterization and stability assessment are hindered. The challenges of the development of reference natural nanomaterials are discussed.

The mechanisms of gravity-constrained aggregation in natural colloidal suspensions

Colloidal settlement in natural aqueous suspensions is effectively compensated by diffusive movement if particles resist aggregation - a state known as colloidal stability. However, if the settling velocity increases upon aggregation, complex structural features emerge from the directional movement induced by gravity. We present a comprehensive modeling study on the evolution of an aggregated three-dimensional structure due to diffusion, surface interactions, and gravity. The systematic investigation of particle geometry and size revealed three mechanisms: (I) aggregation due to spatial confinement of settled particles, (II) aggregation due to differential settling, whereby fast and slow particles collide, (III) inhibition of aggregation due to fractionation of particles with different settling velocity. A 3D visualization tool allowed us to follow the subtle interplay of these mechanisms and the highly dynamic hierarchical self-assembly of aggregates. It revealed how the balance of the different interactions determines the actual rate of aggregation.

Impact of Sinorhizobium meliloti Exopolysaccharide on Adsorption and Aggregation in the Copper(II) Ions/Supporting Electrolyte/Kaolinite System

To obtain insight into physicochemical interactions between Cu(II) ions, kaolinite, and exopolysaccharide (EPS) synthesized by Sinorhizobium meliloti Rm 1021 soil bacteria, an adsorption, electrokinetic, and aggregation study was performed in the selected systems. The obtained data showed that supporting electrolyte type affects both EPS and Cu(II) ions adsorption. For initial Cu(II) concentration 100 mg/L, 4.36 ± 0.25 mg/g (21.80 ± 1.00%) of the ions were adsorbed in 0.001 M NaCl and 3.76 ± 0.20 mg/g (18.80 ± 1.00%) in 0.001 M CaCl_2. The experimental data were best fitted to the Langmuir model as well as pseudo second-order equation. The EPS adsorbed amount on kaolinite was higher in the CaCl₂ electrolyte than in NaCl one. For an initial polymer concentration of 100 mg/L, the EPS adsorbed amount was 4.69 ± 0.08 mg/g (23.45 ± 0.40%) in 0.001 M NaCl and 5.26 ± 0.15 mg/g (26.32 ± 0.75%) in 0.001 M CaCl₂. In the mixed system, regardless of electrolyte type, exopolysaccharide contributed to immobilization of higher amount of copper(II) ions on the clay mineral. Also, in the samples containing heavy metal ions and exopolysaccharide simultaneously, the aggregation of kaolinite particles was the strongest. The results presented in the paper may be very helpful in soil bioremediation, especially in the development of technologies reducing the mobility of heavy metals in the environment.
