Fog collection behavior of bionic surface and large fog collector: A review

Tailoring the covalent organic frameworks based polymer materials for solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting

Atmospheric water harvesting through reticular materials is an innovation that has the potential to change the world. Here, this study offers a technique for creating a solar-powered hygroscopic polymer material for atmospheric water harvesting with the reticular materials. The results show that the porous hygroscopic polymer materials can achieve high performance with high vapor capture (up to ac. 28.8-49.7 mg/g at 28-38 %RH and 25  ℃), rapid photothermal conversion efficiency (up to 32.2 ℃ within 15 min under 1000 W/m-2 light at 25 ℃), a low desorption temperature (lower than 40 ℃), and an effective water release rate. Besides, the material also has excellent water-retention properties, which can effectively store desorbed liquid water in polymer networks for use by vegetation during water demand periods. The strategy opens new avenues for atmospheric water-harvesting materials, which will hopefully solve the global crisis of freshwater shortages.

Laser-Constructed Bionic Composite Fog-Collecting Surfaces with Efficient Nucleation Sites and Enhanced Water Transport

Fog collection effectively alleviates the current freshwater shortage; thus, enhancing its efficiency is crucial. Here, we report a novel bionic fog collection surface (Al@B-V) comprising composite superhydrophobic bumps integrated with superhydrophilic V-channel grooves. This surface, which has efficient fog nucleation points and enhanced water transport capabilities, effectively balances fog capture and water transport during the collection process, thereby achieving high-efficiency fog collection. Compared to ordinary aluminum-based surfaces, Al@B-V achieves a fog collection efficiency of up to 3.08 g·cm-2·h-1, three times higher than the original aluminum-based surface. Furthermore, the V-channel groove proposed in this study exhibits a water transport speed of up to 165 mm·s-1, which is remarkably approximately 80 times faster than the commonly used U-channel groove. Additionally, this V-channel groove can overcome gravity, transporting approximately 10 μL of liquid to the top even when placed at 90° inclination. It can directionally transport 10 μL of liquid over a distance of up to 151 mm on a plane. This novel microgroove design can be effectively applied in various fields, including liquid collection, directional transport, seawater desalination, microfluidics, and drug delivery.

Synergistic Effect of Neighboring Superhydrophilic Patterns on Superhydrophobic Surfaces for Enhanced Fog Collection

In this work, a superhydrophobic surface loaded with elliptical superhydrophilic patterns in a V-shaped arrangement has been fabricated with the help of shape memory membranes with uniform vertically penetrative channels (i.e., SMEUVs, as a mask). The special geometry (elliptical) and arrangement (V-shaped) of superhydrophilic patterns play important roles in the enhancement of fog collection. The former not only facilitates droplet detachment from superhydrophilic regions but also dominates its directional transport. The latter promotes the coalescence of tiny droplets based on directional flow pathway toward collection area, minimizing the risk of re-evaporation of them and providing fresh sites for subsequent nucleation and growth of droplets. The combination of them contributes to the synergistic effect of neighboring superhydrophilic patterns on the superhydrophobic surface. As a result, the optimal specimen (V-shaped arrangement of elliptical superhydrophilic patterns) in this work exhibits much higher fog collection efficiency (∼4 times) relative to the reference (superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic surface). Our results are significant for the design and fabrication of fog collection systems.

Nature-inspired adhesive systems

Many organisms in nature thrive in intricate habitats through their unique bio-adhesive surfaces, facilitating tasks such as capturing prey and reproduction. It's important to note that the remarkable adhesion properties found in these natural biological surfaces primarily arise from their distinct micro- and nanostructures and/or chemical compositions. To create artificial surfaces with superior adhesion capabilities, researchers delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms of these captivating adhesion phenomena to draw inspiration. This article provides a systematic overview of various biological surfaces with different adhesion mechanisms, focusing on surface micro- and nanostructures and/or chemistry, offering design principles for their artificial counterparts. Here, the basic interactions and adhesion models of natural biological surfaces are introduced first. This will be followed by an exploration of research advancements in natural and artificial adhesive surfaces including both dry adhesive surfaces and wet/underwater adhesive surfaces, along with relevant adhesion characterization techniques. Special attention is paid to stimulus-responsive smart artificial adhesive surfaces with tunable adhesive properties. The goal is to spotlight recent advancements, identify common themes, and explore fundamental distinctions to pinpoint the present challenges and prospects in this field.

An Amphiphilic Surface with Improved Thermal Radiation for Water Harvesting

Water scarcity poses a significant challenge for people living in arid areas. Despite the effectiveness of many bioinspired surfaces in promoting vapor condensation, their water-harvesting efficiency is insufficient. This is often exacerbated by overheating, which decreases the performance in terms of the micro-droplet concentration and movement on surfaces. In this study, we used a spotted amphiphilic surface to enhance the surfaces' water-harvesting efficiency while maintaining their heat emissivity. Through hydrophilic particle screening and hydrophobic groove modifying, the coalescence and sliding characteristics of droplets on the amphiphilic surfaces were improved. The incorporation of boron nitride (BN) nanoparticles further enhanced the surfaces' ability to harvest energy from condensation. To evaluate the water-harvesting performance of these amphiphilic surfaces, we utilized a real-time recording water-harvesting platform to identify microscopic weight changes on the surfaces. Our findings indicated that the inclusion of glass particles in hydrophobic grooves, combined with 1.0 wt.% BN nanoparticles, enhanced the water-harvesting efficiency of the amphiphilic surfaces by more than 20%.

Bioinspired Slippery Surfaces for Liquid Manipulation from Tiny Droplet to Bulk Fluid

Slippery surfaces, which originate in nature with special wettability, have attracted considerable attention in both fundamental research and practical applications in a variety of fields due to their unique characteristics of superlow liquid friction and adhesion. Although research on bioinspired slippery surfaces is still in its infancy, it is a rapidly growing and enormously promising field. Herein, a systematic review of recent progress in bioinspired slippery surfaces, beginning with a brief introduction of several typical creatures with slippery property in nature, is presented. Subsequently,this review gives a detailed discussion on the basic concepts of the wetting, friction, and drag from micro- and macro-aspects and focuses on the underlying slippery mechanism. Next, the state-of-the-art developments in three categories of slippery surfaces of air-trapped, liquid-infused, and liquid-like slippery surfaces, including materials, design principles, and preparation methods, are summarized and the emerging applications are highlighted. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of various slippery surfaces are addressed.

Photoresponsive Electrospun Fiber Meshes with Switchable Wettability for Effective Fog Water Harvesting in Variable Humidity Conditions

The global water supply worsens yearly with climate change; therefore, the need for sustainable water resources is growing. One of them is fog water collectors with variable surface wettability, with multifunctional designs for utilization worldwide and to address regions with low humidity levels. Therefore, we created fiber meshes with a photoresponsive switchable surface. This study uses electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) meshes, whose wettability is controlled by adding TiO2. The fog water collection performance is studied at high and low humidity levels. With TiO2-PVDF, the electrospun mesh can be converted from hydrophobic to hydrophilic under UV irradiation and transformed back to a hydrophobic state with heat treatment. The switchable meshes were found to be more effective at water collection after UV irradiation at lower fog rates of 200 mL·h-1. The ability to switch between hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties as needed is highly desired in fog collection applications using electrospun meshes, as it can improve overall efficiency after UV irradiation.

Underwater Oleophobic Electrospun Membrane with Spindle-Knotted Structured Fibers for Oil-in-Water Emulsion Separation

The potential of spider silk as an intriguing biological prototype for collecting water from a humid environment has attracted wide attention, and various materials with suitable structures have been engineered. Here, inspired by this phenomenon, a kind of superwetting poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane with spindle-knotted structured fibers was prepared by the electrospinning method followed by oxygen plasma etching treatment. The prepared membrane presented a satisfactory separation efficiency for various oil-in-water emulsions. The cooperative effect of the special wettability property and the spindle-knot structure stimulated the emulsified oil droplets to accumulate quickly on the membrane surface. A model that explains the accumulation of emulsified oil droplets has also been developed. Furthermore, an artificial fiber comprising a micron-sized spindle-knot structure was prepared by the dip-coating method to clearly illustrate the aggregation process of the emulsified oil droplets and to verify the theoretical explanation. We hope that this study will provide new inspiration for oil/water emulsion separation techniques.

Preparation and Characterization of Poly(Lactic Acid)/Poly (ethylene glycol)-Poly(propyl glycol)-Poly(ethylene glycol) Blended Nanofiber Membranes for Fog Collection

Fog is a resource with great potential to capture fresh water from the atmosphere, regardless of the geographical and hydrological conditions. Micro-sized fog collection requires materials with hydrophilic/phobic patterns. In this study, we prepared hydrophilic poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(propyl glycol)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PPG-PEG) blended nanofiber membranes with various PEG-PPG-PEG concentrations by electrospinning. Changes in the morphological and chemical properties, surface wettability, and thermal stability of the PLA/PEG-PPG-PEG composite nanofiber membranes were confirmed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, contact angle testing, and thermogravimetric analysis. As the PEG-PPG-PEG content of the nanofiber membranes increased, their hydrophilicity increased. Water stability, membrane porosity, and water transport rate tests were also conducted to observe the behavior of the hydrophilic PLA nanocomposite membranes in aqueous media. Finally, we applied the PLA-based membranes as fog collectors. As the PEG-PPG-PEG content of the nanofiber membranes increased, their ability to collect fog increased by over 40% compared with that collected by a pure PLA membrane. The prepared membranes not only improve the ability of fog collectors to harvest water but also broaden the use of PLA-based membranes in multiple applications, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, scaffolds, and pharmaceuticals.

Obtaining Water from Air Using Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)

Water collection from moisture in air, i.e., atmospheric water harvesting, is an urgent future need for society. It can be used for water production everywhere and anytime as an alternative water source in remote areas. However, water harvesting and collection usually relies on desalination, fog, and dewing harvesting, which are energy intensive. In this respect, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have broad applicability for water harvesting in water-scarce areas; therefore, the current discussion focuses on this approach. Furthermore, recent progress on MOFs for moisture harvesters is critically discussed. In addition, the design, operation, and water harvesting mechanisms of MOFs are studied. Finally, we discuss critical points for future research for the design of new MOFs as moisture harvesters for use in practical applications. MOF adsorbents offer excellent operating capacity in various temperature and pressure ranges. Rational water harvesters can thus be developed by adjusting structural properties such as the porosity, functionalities, and metal centers, thereby enabling new devices to produce water even in remote areas.
