Degradation of PCDD/Fs in MSWI fly ash using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal process

Enhancement of catalytic detoxification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration via magnetic hydroxyapatite-assisted hydrothermal treatment

The emission of carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) of fly ash (FA) has attracted significant attention. Hydrothermal treatment (HT) has emerged as a practical approach for degrading PAHs during MSWI of FA by utilizing magnetite (Fe3O4) as a catalyst and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidizing agent. In this study, as an alternative to traditional hydroxyapatite (HAP), eggshell-derived magnetic hydroxyapatite (MHAP) was synthesized and applied in the hydrothermal catalytic degradation of PAHs in MSWI FA in an H2O2 system for the first time. The degradation efficiency of the PAHs is influenced not only by H2O2 but also by the choice of hydroxyapatite. Adding HAP or MHAP during hydrothermal treatment with H2O2 substantially reduced the overall PAH concentration and toxicity equivalent quantity (TEQ), superior to that without H2O2. MHAP demonstrated superior catalytic activity compared to HAP in the presence of H2O2 in the hydrothermal system. The hydrothermal detoxification of the PAHs increased with increasing MHAP dosage. By employing 0.5 mol/L H2O2 as the oxidant and 15 wt% MHAP as the catalyst, a total PAH degradation rate of 88.9 % was achieved, with a remarkable TEQ degradation rate of 98.3 %. Notably, the level of 4-6-ring PAHs, particularly benzo(a) pyrene (BaP) and dibenz(a,h)anthracene (DahA), with a TEQ of 1.0, was significantly reduced (by 69.4 % and 46.0 %, respectively). MHAP remained stable during the hydrothermal catalytic process, whereas H2O2 was effectively activated by MHAP and decomposed to produce strongly oxidizing hydroxyl (•OH) under hydrothermal conditions. •OH produced from the decomposition of H2O2 and metals on the surface of MHAP act as catalytically active centers, efficiently converting high-ring PAHs to low-ring PAHs. These findings provide valuable insights and a technological foundation for PAH detoxification in MSWI FA via hydrothermal catalytic oxidation.

Human health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds in oil-based drill cuttings of shale gas

Waste oil-based drill cuttings contain dioxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have the potential to cause serious health effects in humans. Therefore, this paper took oil-based drill cuttings (OBDCs) as the research object and carried out the testing of VOCs and dioxins content by using GC-MS and HRGCS-HRMS and comprehensively evaluated the content, composition and distribution pattern of VOCs and dioxins and the risk to human health posed by the two pollutants in OBDCs. The results showed that the VOCs did not exceed the emission limits in ESPPI (GB 31571-2015), but it is vital to recognise that 1,2-dichloropropane has the potential to cause cancer risk, with soil and groundwater risk control values of 662.95 mg·kg-1 and 0.066 mg·kg-1, respectively. Benzene, 1,2-dichloropropane and 8 other VOCs pose a non-carcinogenic risk to humans. The levels of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) exceeded those of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), which accounted for 95.76 percent of the total PCDD/Fs, 2,3,4,7,8-P5CDF (56.00%), 2,3,7,8-T4CDF (9.20%), 1,2,3,6,7,8-H6CDF (8.80%) and 1,2,3,7,8-P5CDF (8.00%) were the main contributing monomers. The findings of the assessment on exposure risk indicate that there is a respiratory risk to oil-based drill cuttings dioxins for adults and children exceeded the World Health Organisation (WHO) acceptable daily intake (ADI) (1-4 pgTEQ/kg/d). Finally, three aspects of solid waste pre-treatment prior to incineration, the incineration process and post incineration were used to reduce the environmental and human health risks from dioxins.

Review of thermal treatments for the degradation of dioxins in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash: Proposing a suitable method for large-scale processing

Dioxin degradation is considered essential for the environmentally sound management of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA). Among the many degradation techniques, thermal treatment has shown good prospects owing to its high efficiency and wide range of applications. Thermal treatment is divided into high-temperature thermal, microwave thermal, hydrothermal, and low-temperature thermal treatments. High-temperature sintering and melting not only have dioxin degradation rates higher than 95 % but also remove volatile heavy metals, although energy consumption is high. High-temperature industrial co-processing effectively solves the problem of energy consumption, but with a low fly ash (FA) mixture, and the process is limited by location. Microwave thermal treatment and hydrothermal treatment are still in the experimental stage and cannot be used for large-scale processing. The dioxin degradation rate of low-temperature thermal treatment can also be stabilized at higher than 95 %. Compared to other methods, low-temperature thermal treatment is less costly and energy consumption with no restriction on location. This review comprehensively compares the current status of the above-mentioned thermal treatment methods and their ability to dispose of MSWIFA, especially the potential for large-scale processing. Then, the respective characteristics, challenges, and application prospects of different thermal treatment methods were discussed. Finally, based on the goal of low carbon and emission reduction, three possible approaches for improvement were proposed to address the challenges of large-scale processing of low-temperature thermal treatment, namely, adding a catalyst, changing the FA fraction, or supplementing with blockers, providing a reasonable development direction for the degradation of dioxins in MSWIFA.

Subcritical hydrothermal treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash: A review

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) is a hazardous waste generated from the incineration process, and the harmless treatment of MSWI-FA has attracted widespread attention. Subcritical hydrothermal treatment is competitive in achieving the harmless treatment and resource recycling of MSWI-FA. It exhibits excellent performance in degrading dioxins, stabilizing heavy metals, and converting MSWI-FA into zeolite or tobermorite at low temperatures. This paper clearly introduces the characteristics of MSWI-FA, roundly summarizes the current research status of treating MSWI-FA by subcritical hydrothermal methods, and deeply clarifies the mechanisms of dioxins degradation, zeolite/tobermorite synthesis, and heavy metals stabilization. Considering the research status of handling MSWI-FA by subcritical hydrothermal methods, future research directions are proposed. Owing to the advantages of high efficiency, energy-saving, and environmental sustainability, subcritical hydrothermal treatment of MSWI-FA exhibits promising prospects for industrialization.

Coupled microwave hydrothermal dechlorination and geopolymer preparation for the solidification/stabilization of heavy metals and chlorine in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash

To improve the degradation efficiency of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA), as well as to overcome the difficulties of subsequent hydrothermal liquid and hydrothermal slag treatment, a two-step treatment strategy of microwave hydrothermal degradation coupled with geopolymer immobilization was proposed. Results showed that the optimal process parameters for microwave hydrothermal dechlorination were a temperature of 220 °C, a time of 1 h, and NaOH addition of 10 wt%. Microwaves accelerated the OH^- mediated hydrolysis reactions and promoted the breaking of CCl bonds, leading to dechlorination. The compressive strength of the 20 % MSWIFA-based geopolymers reached 75.79 MPa, and the immobilization rate of the heavy metals (HMs) and Cl^- surpassed 90 %. Alkaline environment provided by microwave hydrothermal promoted the formation of Ca(OH)₂, which subsequently formed Friedel's salt (3CaO•Al₂O₃•CaCl₂•10H₂O) with Cl^- in the geopolymer. The charge density difference and density of states (DOS) of Friedel's salt were analyzed by first-principles calculations, confirming that the existence of strong interactions between Ca-s, Al-p, O-p, and Cl-p states was the chemical mechanism of Cl^- immobilization. The Friedel's salt and HMs were encapsulated by geopolymers with dense silica-alumina tetrahedral frameworks, achieving the solidification/stabilization (S/S) of HMs and Cl^-. This work provided a new approach for the environmentally sound and resourceful treatment of MSWIFA.

Effects and mechanism of the conditions of sintering on heavy metal leaching characteristic in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash treated with toxicity metals holds enormous potential for constructure use to economize on resources and protect environment. To reach the goal, this study investigated the effects of sintering conditions on leaching characteristic of heavy metals for MSWI fly ash, especially Cr, Cr⁶⁺, Ag, and Ba, with the orthogonal and Box-Benhnken design experiment, which considered grain size (D₅₀ = 30, 45, and 60 μm), fluxing agent (CaO = 0, 2.5, and 5%), setting temperature (1000, 1050, and 1100 °C), and setting time (120, 180, and 240 min). The mechanism of immobilization for heavy metals was also discussed through the analyses of morphological characterizations, mineral phases, chemical composition, and leaching values of metals. The results indicated that changing grain size and adding fluxing agent of CaO have positive influence on reducing the leaching of heavy metals compared with direct sintering. The leaching values of As, Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni, Zn, Mn, Hg, Be, Se, and fluoride are not detected after sintering. Ideal sintering condition with desirability of 1.00 was predicted and optimized by the Box-Benhnken response method in grain size of D₅₀ = 30 μm, fluxing agent of CaO = 5%, setting temperature = 1050 °C, and setting time = 180 min, which immobilized Cr, Cr⁶⁺, Ag, and Ba lower than the limitation of standards. Actual experiment was consistent with numerical optimization. Furthermore, the model of leaching characteristic for heavy metals in MSWI fly ash was established with the discussion on species distribution of heavy metals to better explain the mechanism during sintering.

Disposal technology and new progress for dioxins and heavy metals in fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration: A critical review

Incineration has gradually become the most effective way to deal with MSW due to its obvious volume reduction and weight reduction effects. However, since heavy metals and organic pollutants carried by municipal solid waste incinerator fly ash (MSWI FA) pose a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health, they need to be handled carefully. In this study, the current status of MSWI FA disposal was first reviewed, and the harmless and resourceful disposal technologies of heavy metals and organic pollutants in MSWI FA are summarized as well. A summary of the advantages and disadvantages of each technology, including sintering, melting/vitrification, hydrothermal treatment, mechanochemistry, solidification/stabilization of MSWI FA, is compared. Finally, the research work that needs to be strengthened in the future (such as codisposal of multiple wastes, long-term stability research of disposal products, etc.) was proposed. Through comprehensive analysis, some reasonable and feasible suggestions were provided for the effective and safe disposal of MSWI FA in the future.

Distribution and bioaccumulation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in the tissues of Yorkshire pig

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in various foods continuously concern the public. Pork and its byproducts, especially from Yorkshire pigs, are the largest meat food consumed by the general population in China. This study aims to investigate the distribution of PCDD/Fs in different tissues of Yorkshire pigs to understand their bioaccumulation. Yorkshire pigs were fed a known amount of PCDD/Fs through fly ash. PCDD/Fs were determined by isotope dilution method with a gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometer. The liver had the highest concentration levels (2041.33 pg/g lipid) and toxic equivalents values (69.14 pg/g lipid), followed by the spleen and lung, and the lowest ones in the brain. The liver also had the highest bioaccumulation of PCDD/Fs, and this level was considerably higher than that of other tissues. This study showed a strong accumulation capacity of the liver for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans under short-term exposure conditions, suggesting that the liver is a more sensitive tissue for monitoring PCDD/Fs in food safety risk monitoring. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This paper may help the consumer in making food choices to minimize the exposure risk to Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans.

Hydrothermal oxidation degradation of dioxins in fly ash with water-washing and added Ce-Mn catalyst

A comprehensive analysis of the effects of the temperature, reaction time, liquid-solid ratio (L/S), and initial pH on the hydrothermal degradation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) (which are both PCDD/Fs) in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is presented. Consequently, the hydrothermal degradation reaction is catalyzed using Ce-Mn catalyst under low-temperature conditions to study the effect of the catalyst on the degradation efficiency of PCDD/Fs. The experimental results show that temperature is the most critical factor for the reaction. When the hydrothermal oxidation temperature reaches 280 °C (reaction time = 120 min, original pH = 8.5, L/S = 4 mL/g), the toxicity equivalent (I-TEQ) of PCDD/Fs is only 5.4 ng TEQ/kg, and the degradation efficiency reaches 99.71%. Under these conditions, 2,3,4,7,8-P₅CDF makes the highest contribution to I-TEQ degradation, reaching 37.4%. There are four main pathways for the reaction of 2,3,4,7,8-P₅CDF with hydroxyl radicals. A comparison of the PCDD/F concentrations of different products shows that the addition of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% of the Ce-Mn catalyst reduces the degradation efficiency by 8.79%, 1.40%, and 0.07%, respectively, which indicates that the addition of a small quantity of Ce-Mn catalyst does not facilitate the degradation of PCDD/Fs. The addition of the catalyst significantly decreases the degradation efficiency of low-chlorinated homologs but has a relatively small effect on that of high-chlorinated homologs. Therefore, it is concluded that Ce-Mn catalysts are more likely to promote resynthesis than degradation of PCDD/Fs.

Insight into the Transformation Behaviors of Dioxins from Sintering Flue Gas in the Cyclic Thermal Regeneration by the V2O5/AC Catalyst-sorbent

Dioxins in the sintering flue gas are usually removed through integrated elimination technologies by carbonaceous catalysts. However, the regeneration of the used catalyst is poorly investigated, leading to the risk of leakage of dioxins. Herein, the influences of cyclic regenerations on the dioxin removal performance of a catalyst (V₂O₅/AC) were investigated systematically with dibenzofuran (DBF) as a model pollutant. It was demonstrated that the adsorption capacity and oxidation activity of catalysts significantly declined after several regeneration cycles due to the decreasing external specific surface area and V⁵⁺, respectively. Compared with 79.12% DBF directly emitted from a regenerator during N₂ regeneration, the emission of DBF was only 29.93% with the modification of the regeneration process through O₂ addition and temperature adjustment. The possible regenerated products were also analyzed to disclose the transformation behaviors of DBF. The regeneration mechanisms of DBF followed the transformation pathway of dibenzofuranol, benzofuran, anhydride species, and ultimately to CO₂ and H₂O. Moreover, the accumulated heavy aromatics on the surface could be decomposed by introducing O₂. This research provides a comprehensive understanding of dioxin transformation behavior and a theoretical basis for efficient control of dioxin removal in the whole integrated removal technologies.

Physiological role of isocitrate lyase in dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran metabolism by Sphingomonas wittichii RW1

BACKGROUND

Sphingomonas wittichii RW1 is one out of three strains capable of metabolizing dioxin as a sole source for carbon and energy. Under laboratory conditions the degradation rates for these aromatics are relatively high (5 and 8 h for dibenzofuran (DBF) and dibenzo-p-dioxin (DD), respectively). However, their degradation rates are much lower in the environment due to several factors. One of these factors is the availability of other carbon sources. Acetate is a metabolized carbon source by S. wittichii RW1 and its presence in the environment would have a negative impact on DBF and DD degradation. In addition, expression of most of the genes for DBF and DD degradation were downregulated when grown on acetate compared to their growth on DBF and DD. We hypothesized that blocking the acetate utilization pathway in S. wittichii RW1 would prevent it from using acetate when present along with DD and DBF in contaminated sites.

RESULTS

Blocking the glyoxylate shunt by deleting isocitrate lyase gene (icl) prevented the mutant strain (RW1Δicl) from using acetate as a sole carbon source thus depending on available DBF and DD in polluted sites. Our results showed that deletion of icl did not affect growth of S. wittichii RW1 on DBF and DD but blocked it from growing on acetate.

CONCLUSION

Our results introduces an engineered strain that can be used as a new candidate to clean dioxin-contaminated sites which are rich with acetate.

Solidification of heavy metals and PCDD/Fs from municipal solid waste incineration fly ash by the polymerization of calcium carbonate oligomers

Calcium carbonate oligomers are gel-state precursors that can be crystallized by low-temperature heat treatments to form an inorganic material with a monolithic and continuous structure, this material can effectively solidify/stabilize heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA). Calcium chloride addition achieves FA stabilization/solidification by the formation and polymerization of calcium carbonate oligomers. The effects of calcium, triethylamine (TEA), and water-washing pretreatment on the solidification of heavy metals by the polymer were studied. Consequently, as more calcium was added, the solidification improved. When the ratio of TEA/Ca²⁺ was increased from 2:1 to 3:1, the solidification efficiency of As and Cd increased, but it decreased when the ratio was continuously increased to 4:1. After the water-washing pre-treatment, the MSWI FA had a significantly improved solidification effect on the heavy metals, and the solidification efficiencies of zinc, copper, cadmium, chromium, lead, and arsenic were 81.9%, 90.0%, 93.5%, 91.8%, 99.6% and 95.5%, respectively. Additionally, the solidification efficiency of PCDD/Fs was 56.5%. The heavy metals and PCDD/Fs in MSWI FA solidified by physical adsorption, wrapping and chemical precipitation. The continuous calcium carbonate structure adsorbed and encased the MSWI FA, and the heavy metals in the MSWI FA were converted from a free state to carbonate precipitates through carbonation, and the carbonate precipitate was more likely to be physical solidification by calcium carbonate.

Study of the Effects of the Addition of Fly Ash from Carwash Sludge in Lime and Cement Pastes

Sludge from carwash wastewater treatment plants has been evaluated as substitute for lime paste, as well as its behavior in cement mortars. Dry sludge waste was used with (CSlud) and without (USlud) pretreatment and have been characterized. The pastes were prepared with weight replacement of 5, 10, 15, and 20% of sludge. The formation of calcium silicate hydrate was determined by TGA, both in lime and cement pastes. The compressive strength properties were evaluated in mortars. It was found the mixtures which present the best results were those of 5 and 10% for USlud, and 10 and 20% for CSlud.

Industrial disposal processes for treatment of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash

Hazardous waste disposal is a serious environmental concern in China. Therefore, in this study, industrial trials were conducted in a low-temperature thermal degradation facility, a tunnel kiln, and a shaft kiln to effectively treat dioxins in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash. The results indicated that the low-temperature thermal degradation facility efficiently decomposed polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in the MSWI fly ash. Additionally, the concentrations of dioxins in the treated fly ash and exhaust gas were lower than the suggested standard limits and the degradation ratio of dioxins was ∼99%. Therefore, treated fly ash characterized by acceptable dioxin risks could be utilized for the production of non-fired building materials. The results from the tunnel kiln indicated complete decomposition of the dioxins in the firing and insulating sections. However, the addition of fly ash in the tunnel kiln increased the concentration of dioxins in the flue gas. This can be primarily attributed to the heterogeneous catalytic synthesis reaction in the low-temperature section of the tunnel kiln. The results from the shaft kiln indicated degradation of at least 22% of the dioxins in the ash. The dioxin concentration in the flue gas was lower than the national standard while that in the clinker was within a reasonable limit. Furthermore, the environmental risks were significantly reduced at fly ash addition ratios lower than 3%.

Emerging trends in municipal solid waste incineration ashes research: a bibliometric analysis from 1994 to 2018

The rapidly increasing generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) threatens the environmental integrity and well-being of humans at a global level. Incineration is regarded as a technically sound technology for the management of MSW. However, the effective management of the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ashes remains a challenge. This article presents the global dynamics of MSWI ashes research from 1994 to 2018 based on a bibliometric analysis of 1810 publications (research articles and conference proceedings) extracted from the Web of Science database, followed by a comprehensive summary on the research developments in the field. The results indicate the rapid growth of annual publications on MSWI ashes research, with China observed as the most productive country within the study period. Waste Management, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Chemosphere and Waste Management & Research, which accounted for 35.42% of documents on MSWI research, are the most prominent journals in the field. The most critical thematic areas on this topic are MSWI ashes characterisation, dioxin emissions from fly ash, valorisation of bottom ash and heavy metal removal. The evolution of MSWI ashes treatment technologies is also discussed, together with the challenges and future research directions. This is the first bibliometric analysis on global MSWI ashes research based on a sufficiently large dataset, which could provide new insights for researchers to initiate further research with leading institutions/authors and ultimately advance this research field.
