Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is a lack of synthesized knowledge on nursing students self-directed learning in bioscience and how to best support students' learning in this subject. The purpose of this integrative review is to synthesize current literature on perspectives on self-directed learning among nursing students studying bioscience to guide further research aiming to support students' learning more effectively. METHODS An integrative review in line with Whittemore & Knafl's modified framework containing five stages: problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis and presentation. A structured literature search was undertaken in the Web of Science, ERIC, Medline and CINAHL databases from November 2022 to January 2023. The inclusion criteria were nursing students enrolled in a bachelor programme, research addressing activities intended for learning bioscience, in addition to formal taught lectures and perspectives on self-directed learning in natural science subjects within nurse education such as views, actions, activities, habits and attitudes. Exclusion criteria were students in other education programs, research in formal learning contexts, and self-directed learning in other subjects than natural science subjects. Rigour of each included source was assessed using Whittemore & Knafl's suggested 2-point scale (high or low). A constant comparison method was used to synthesize results. RESULTS Of the initial 1143 sources, 12 articles were included after abstract and full-text screening: one pilot study for randomized controlled trial, one qualitative study, two mixed methods studies and eight quantitative studies. The sample size was from 23 to 563 participants. DISCUSSION This review identifies self-directed learning in bioscience understood as a continuum of teacher-directedness and self-directedness rather than as distinguished orientations. There seem to be no consistent definition of self-directed learning in bioscience, yet descriptions commonly imply metacognitive learning approaches. Nursing students value digital learning resources, yet technology might be secondary to the skill of self-directed learning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The current study aimed to determine perceptions of registered and student nurses regarding the integration of anatomy and physiology into nursing practice. METHODS This scoping review was conducted following the checklist provided in the Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for scoping reviews. Articles published in PubMed, ERIC, and CINAL from January 1, 2002 to September 30, 2022 were included. RESULTS A literature review of 20 articles that matched the indicative criteria revealed that both undergraduate student and registered nurses recognized knowledge of anatomy and physiology as important to nursing practice. Student nurses recognized that such knowledge is related to understanding patient pathophysiology, patient observation, treatment selection, and patient safety and forms the basis for nursing practice. Registered nurses who were confident in their knowledge of anatomy and physiology also reported that they were able to explain the rationale for their nursing practice. They also reported that this knowledge is necessary for communication with multiple professions, which promotes patient/family trust in nurses and is the basis for building trusting relationships with patients and their families. CONCLUSIONS Although undergraduate student and registered nurses recognized the importance of learning anatomy and physiology, the integration of anatomy and physiology into nursing practice was not the same for all student and registered nurses. This suggests the need to investigate the overall perceptions of nurses regarding the integration of anatomy and physiology into nursing practice and for faculty to discuss how to facilitate critical thinking among students.

Abstract
Knowledge of human anatomy is vital for nurses. Medical educators use a variety of educational pedagogies, including the use of cadavers, to cultivate nursing students into competent and professional care providers and to help them gain authentic experience and knowledge before entering the workplace. Studies have provided numerous examples of students with positive learning experiences in human-centric (humanistic) anatomy courses; however, whether these positive experiences translate into effective clinical practice remains largely unknown. This study explored nurses' perspectives on the effects of a humanistic anatomy program on their nursing practice. Focus groups with semi-structured interview guidelines were conducted to collect data. Twenty-one nurses working in hospitals in Taiwan participated and divided themselves into four groups on the basis of willingness to participate and availability. The interviews were recorded using smartphones, and the recordings were transcribed using a computer. The transcriptions were then checked word by word artificially and analyzed by hand. Three main themes emerged during the analysis: adapting to the professional journey, managing time when providing humanistic care, and cultivating professionalism. The results demonstrate educators' expectations that humanistic anatomy education for nursing students expands students' professional knowledge and helps them develop humanistic competencies as professional nurses.

Abstract
Many nursing curricula do not offer anatomy laboratories and exposure to cadaveric material. In this mixed methods study, nursing students' perceptions and experiences from an anatomy laboratory session were examined. Students from two academic nursing programs (a four-year general baccalaureate nursing program and a two-year accelerated nursing program for non-nursing baccalaureate graduates) took part in an anatomy laboratory session (N = 223). Participants' learning experiences, emotional experiences, and satisfaction with the anatomy laboratory session were assessed by their responses to closed-ended questionnaires. Participants' reasons for participation and suggestions for improvement were examined by open-ended questions. A mixed methods analysis of the data revealed a high level of satisfaction with the anatomy laboratory experience. Positive attitudes and learning experiences correlated with a sense of identification with the nursing profession. Satisfaction was positively associated with a perceived quality of learning and negatively associated with a negative emotional experience. Curiosity and self-challenge, as well as the quest for tangible, in-depth learning, were major motivators involved in the students' desire to participate in the session. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses indicated that the educational experience was significant. Therefore, it is recommended to integrate anatomy laboratory sessions into anatomy courses for nursing students. This will help to illustrate and assimilate classroom material and strengthen nursing students' sense of identification with their profession.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses and midwives have a professional obligation to promote health and prevent disease, and therefore they have an essential role to play in vaccination. Despite this, some nurses and midwives have been found to take an anti-vaccination stance and promulgate misinformation about vaccines, often using Facebook as a platform to do so. RESEARCH QUESTION This article reports on one component and dataset from a larger study - 'the positives, perils and pitfalls of Facebook for nurses'. It explores the specific issue of nurses and midwives who take an anti-vaccination stance, deemed to be unprofessional by crossing professional boundaries and by providing medical information on Facebook that is not within their scope of practice. PARTICIPANTS Data were collected via an online worldwide survey from nurse and midwife participants, distributed and 'snowballed' through relevant nursing and midwifery groups on Facebook. In total, 1644 Registered Nurses and Midwives, and Enrolled Nurses worldwide attempted the online survey. There were 1100 (66.9%) completed surveys and 54 partially (33.1%) completed surveys. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted online using Skype® with 17 participants in Australia. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS Ethical processes and procedures have been adhered to relating to privacy, confidentiality and anonymity of the participants. FINDINGS/RESULTS A mixed-methods approach was used, including descriptive and content analysis of the quantitative survey data and thematic analysis of the qualitative interview data. The main theme 'blurred boundaries' was generated, which comprised three sub-themes: 'follow the science, 'abuse of power and erosion of trust' and 'the moral and ethical responsibility to safeguard public health'. The results offer an important and unique understanding of how nurses and midwives interpret the conduct of fellow health professionals as unprofessional and crossing the professional boundary if they used Facebook to promulgate anti-vaccination messages and/or give medical advice online. CONCLUSION There are many positives and negatives for nurses and midwives associated with using Facebook for personal and professional communication, which is in keeping with the results of the larger study from which this article is taken. Professional behaviour is a key theme in the larger research as is the ethical construct of 'every act has a consequence'; however, in this article, the theme 'blurred boundaries' offers an overall understanding of how nurses and midwives interpret the behaviour of their colleagues who espouse anti-vaccination sentiment and/or give medical advice online that is outside their scope of practice and education.

Abstract
Universities have quickly shifted to remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study compared two versions-emergency remote teaching (ERT) and conventional face-to-face class (FFC)-of a course design based on the instructional design ARCS model for effectiveness and issues. The current study comprised 46 third-year nursing students who attended an FFC course in 2019, and 56 third-year students who took the ERT version in 2020. Students' self-rated goal attainment and knowledge of genetics scores were compared before and after taking the courses. Scores between the two class types were compared using the Wilcoxon rank sum test. The students' worksheets were evaluated using keyword frequency and content analyses. Both classes achieved their goals satisfactorily, and this study confirmed that for this course, ERT was as effective as FFC. A comparison of the increase in domain goal attainment scores per student showed that only the psychomotor domain item, "I can fully explain human diversity using genomic information", was significantly different, as it was significantly higher for ERT (p = 0.003). This higher item in the ERT group suggests that ERT can pose a lack of practice caution in acquiring nursing skills.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known regarding the transfer of bioscience knowledge gained during undergraduate nursing studies into clinical practice. OBJECTIVE To explore the experiences of new registered nurses in applying bioscience concepts in their day-to-day nursing practice. DESIGN Descriptive qualitative design. PARTICIPANTS Fifteen recently graduated registered nurses (RNs) who were working in acute care settings participated in the study. METHODS Semi-structured, face-to-face individual interviews were conducted. Interview data were audio-recorded and thematically analysed. RESULTS Four themes were identified from the qualitative interviews. The first and second themes demonstrated nurses' realisation of the relevance of theoretical bioscience knowledge learnt within the classroom to their practice and how this evidence-based knowledge translated into confidence in decisions made. The third and fourth themes revealed the impact bioscience knowledge had on RNs' relationships with patients and family members, which was viewed as providing compassionate care. CONCLUSIONS The application of knowledge in biosciences gained during their undergraduate years, provided the basis for RNs to trust in their own clinical judgment and to speak with conviction. 'Connecting the dots' between bioscience knowledge and clinical practice provided the platform for RNs to gain and build trust with their patients. The practical utility of bioscience knowledge in everyday practice allowed RNs to contextualise their nursing care regimen and tailor holistic nursing care delivery to individual patient needs.

Abstract
After the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi accident, demands regarding nursing staff's management of nuclear disasters have increased. This study aimed to evaluate a basic training program to teach undergraduate nursing students on how to deal with public anxiety following a nuclear disaster. We analyzed the data of 111 third-year nursing students attending a Japanese university. We set attainment goals in three domains (cognitive, affective, psychomotor) regarding their acquisition of consultation techniques for radiation-related health concerns. We compared pre- and post-class response scores on a knowledge test and calculated word frequencies in health consultation scenarios. The pre-class mean score was 12.2 out of 27 points and the post-class mean score (directly after the course) was 21.0, a significant increase (p < 0.001). The mean level of attainment in each of the three domains increased significantly from pre-test to post-test (p < 0.001). The variety and number of words in the health consultations also increased. Students attained the program goals for radiation-related health concerns in all domains. During disasters, there is a great need for nursing staff to administer physical and mental care to the public. This program was evaluated to be one wherein nursing staff can acquire fundamental knowledge about radiation in a short time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article describes how one comprehensive cancer center in the Northeast United States reorganized their nursing research fellowship (NRF) with the goals of engaging nurses in research processes, developing a culture of inquiry, building nursing research capacity, and sustaining infrastructures for facilitating high-quality, nurse-led oncology research studies. METHODS The basis for the curriculum, course work, and research practicum is derived from academic courses taught at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Evidence from the current literature, expertise of nurse-scientists, and feedback from former fellows provided the background for a fellowship model that included: (1) amending curriculum timeframes; (2) incorporating protected time; (3) improving access to resources; (4) enhancing the protection, data sharing, and accessibility of data; and (5) involving nurse-scientists as mentors and facilitators of research processes. These factors were incorporated over 3 years. Metrics included individual class and overall course evaluations and ongoing assessments. RESULTS In three cohorts from 2016 to 2019, a total of 21 nurses were accepted, and 18 (86%) nurses completed the NRF. In cohort 1 through cohort 3, 17 fellows presented their research findings internally, and a total of nine projects were presented at external forums. There were seven fellows whose manuscript submissions resulted in 21 journal publications. Of the 18 fellows, 15 (83%) conducted institutional review board-approved studies and three (17%) fellows developed studies involving one concept analysis and two systematic reviews. CONCLUSIONS Utilizing technology, the fellowship improved access beyond the classroom setting. Improved application processes, the inclusion of protected time for nurses, and mentoring from nurse-scientists demonstrate a commitment to fostering a culture supporting new knowledge and innovation for improving patient care.

Abstract
Anatomy, a fundamental subject in nursing education, provides students with knowledge of human structure and function. The study was to explore the influence of humanised anatomy educational method on nursing students' psychophysiological responses and academic achievement to human anatomy using cadavers, and to examine the correlations between the students' characteristics (such as gender), psychophysiological responses, and academic achievement in anatomy. A correlational study design was adopted. A total of 80 participants with a 4-year BSN degree were recruited from a nursing school located in eastern Taiwan. Human anatomy teaching using cadavers was delivered. Standardised and researcher-modified questionnaires were used to collect data. Either parametric or nonparametric methods were used for data analysis depending on data distribution. A small proportion of students experienced physical symptoms and stress. Gender difference was observed in death anxiety caused by working with cadavers. All psychophysiological responses of students did not influence their achievement. Further, the students demonstrated that using cadavers had a certain level of engagement with the course, which was positively correlated with academic grades. This study suggests that human anatomy using cadavers is a feasible educational method to broaden students learning experience in class.

Abstract
Anatomy is a core course in undergraduate nursing curriculum. In today's nursing profession, the integration of biosciences and humanities is increasingly emphasized. Anatomy is considered one of the most essential bioscience subjects for nursing practice. Thus, integrating a silent mentor program into the anatomy course can enrich the knowledge of undergraduate nursing students regarding biosciences and humanities and enhance their future patient-centered care competencies. This article aimed to understand the students' perceptions of integrating a silent mentor program into the anatomy course. Qualitative approach included four focus group interviews. Themes were developed using the analytic induction technique. Twenty-five second-year undergraduate nursing students from a university were recruited. Semi-structured interviews were used to guide four focus group interviews. Focus group interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. According to the preliminary findings, nursing students regarded silent mentors not only as teaching tools but also as tools to learn more than anatomy. Students greatly respected the silent mentors and were highly engaged in the anatomy course. They expected to become better students or future nurses. Four themes were identified from the interviews: emotional transformation, caring spirit, course engagement, and self-expectation. The findings suggest that the silent mentor program offered students a beneficial learning experience and stimulated their developing competency in nursing humanities. How the silent mentor program can help students achieve optimum academic performance and how their positive experience of the program and humanistic spirit translates into clinical practice in future should be studied further.
