An insight into the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the structural, thermal, mechanical properties and antimicrobial activity of Cs/PVA composite

Cinnamon essential oil induced microbial stress metabolome indicates its active food packaging efficiency when incorporated into poly vinyl alcohol, engineered with zinc oxide nanoparticles and nanocellulose

In the study, Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) films engineered with the nanoparticles and essential oils have been developed as efficient alternative to the currently used food packaging materials. For this, impact of cinnamon essential oil (CEO), on the metabolomic profile of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Aspergillus flavus was analysed. Subsequently, PVA based nanocomposite films CEO, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), and nanocellulose (NC) were synthesised and characterized by FT-IR analysis. By the GC-MS analysis. The presence of ZnONPs enhanced the release of cinnamaldehyde from 31.16 to 44.23 and further enhancement to 71.82 was seen the presence of nanocellulose. The incorporation of NPs was found to enhance the hydrodynamic and mechanical properties of the prepared films. The final developed films, PZNCCEO, showed the least values for WHC and MC which were 56.31 ± 2.12 % and 13.30 ± 0 % respectively. Antimicrobial efficacy could also be demonstrated through the observation on changes in the morphological features of treated S. aureus and E. coli by the FE-SEM. Finally, the developed nanocomposite film was found to have the potential for food packaging as demonstrated through the protection of corn kernals and Vigna unguiculata.

Chitosan hybrid nanomaterials: A study on interaction with biomimetic membranes

This study examined the influence of nanomaterials (NMs) on the organization of membrane lipids and the resulting morphological changes. The cell plasma membrane is heterogeneous, featuring specialized lipid domains in the liquid-ordered (Lo) phase surrounded by regions in the liquid-disordered (Ld) phase. We utilized model membranes composed of various lipids and lipid mixtures in different phase states to investigate the interactions between the NMs and membrane lipids. Specifically, we explored the interactions of pure chitosan (CS) and CS-modified nanocomposites (NCs) with ZnO, CuO, and SiO2 with four lipid mixtures: egg-phosphatidylcholine (EggPC), egg-sphingomyelin/cholesterol (EggSM/Chol), EggPC/Chol, and EggPC/EggSM/Chol, which represent the coexistence of Ld, Lo, and Ld/Lo, respectively. The data show that CS NMs increase the membrane lipid order at glycerol level probed by Laurdan spectroscopy. Additionally, the interaction of CS-based NMs with membranes leads to an increase in bending elasticity modulus, zeta potential, and vesicle size. The lipid order changes are most significant in the highly fluid Ld phase, followed by the Lo/Ld coexistence phase, and are less pronounced in the tightly packed Lo phase. CS NMs induced egg PC vesicle adhesion, fusion, and shrinking. In heterogeneous Lo/Ld membranes, inward invaginations and vesicle shrinking via the Ld phase were observed. These findings highlight mechanisms involved in CS NM-lipid interactions in membranes that mimic plasma membrane heterogeneity.

Nanotechnology in food packaging materials: role and application of nanoparticles

Global concerns about food security, driven by rising demand, have prompted the exploration of nanotechnology as a solution to enhance food supply. This shift comes in response to the limitations of conventional technologies in meeting the ever-increasing demand for food products. Consequently, nanoparticles play a crucial role in enhancing food production, preservation, and extending shelf life by imparting exceptional properties to materials. Nanoparticles and nanostructures with attributes like expansive surface area and antimicrobial efficacy, are versatile in both traditional packaging and integration into biopolymer matrices. These distinctive qualities contribute to their extensive use in various food sector applications. Hence, this review explores the physicochemical properties, functions, and biological aspects of nanoparticles in the context of food packaging. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of nanoparticles with different biopolymers, alongside its different potential applications such as food shelf-life extenders, antimicrobial agents and as nanomaterials for developing smart packaging systems were summarily explored. While the ongoing exploration of this research area is evident, our review highlights the substantial potential of nanomaterials to emerge as a viable choice for food packaging if the challenges regarding toxicity are carefully and effectively modulated.

Development of an efficient electrochemical sensing platform based on ter-poly(luminol-o-anisidine-o-toluidine)/ZnO/GNPs nanocomposites for the detection of antimony (Sb3+) ions

A poly(luminol-o-anisidine-o-toluidine) terpolymer was synthesized, characterized, and modified with GNPs and ZnO NPs. The nanocomposites were then examined for their electroactivity and potential use as cationic electrochemical sensors for detecting Sb3+ ions in phosphate buffer on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Among the different compositions and the terpolymer, the GCE adapted with the PLAT/ZnO/GNPs-5% nanocomposite displayed the highest current response. The fabricated nanocomposite sensor exhibited high sensitivity, with a value of 21.4177 μA μM-1 cm-2, and a low detection limit of 95.42 pM. The analytical performance of the sensor was evaluated over the linear dynamic range (LDR) of 0.1 nM to 0.01 mM. The proposed sensor is effective in detecting and measuring carcinogenic Sb3+ ions in real environmental samples using an electrochemical approach, making it a promising tool for environmental monitoring.

Phytofabrication of biocompatible chitosan-based ZnO nanocomposite aided by Cissus quadrangularis extract enriched with antimicrobial and antioxidant potential

A dynamic chitosan-based ZnO nanocomposite (NC) was fabricated via a cost-effective formulation and an eco-friendly procedure utilizing Cissus quadrangularis (CQ) plant extract. This study investigates the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, together with the cytocompatibility aspects of chitosan-incorporated ZnO nanocomposite (CS-ZnO/CQE). The formation and structural morphology of the nanocomposites were examined using FTIR, UV-Vis, XRD, XPS, BET, TGA, SEM, and TEM techniques. The antibacterial test results demonstrated the greatest inhibitory zone diameter against S. aureus (19 ± 1.00 mm) and E. coli (17 ± 1.05 mm), assessed through agar well diffusion method. Also, the composite exhibited a DPPH inhibition rate of 78.7 ± 0.34 %, indicating its high effectiveness in neutralizing free radicals. In addition, the nanocomposite exhibited less toxicity towards human erythrocytes, HDF and HEK-293 cells as a result of the biocompatibility exhibited by CS, ZnO, and CQ plant extract. Likewise, it has exceptional cell migratory capacity and possesses biodegradability factors. These observations strongly suggest the potential of CS-ZnO/CQE as a cutting-edge antibacterial and antioxidant agent to be implemented in the medical sector.

Optical, thermal, mechanical, and antibacterial properties of polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/ZnMn2O4 nanocomposites films for various optical devices and food packaging applications

This work involves preparing zinc manganite nanoparticles (ZnMn2O4 NPs) using the Sol-gel method. Polymer nanocomposites of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Sodium alginate (NaAlg)- ZnMn2O4 NPs were created using the solution casting technique. The polymer nanocomposites films were made with varying weight percentages of ZnMn2O4 nanoparticles. With the addition of nanofiller, the reduced direct and indirect energy band gap values and increased Urbach energy values were discovered in the UV-Vis data. XRD data showed a reduction in crystallinity degree with dopant. ZnMn2O4 NPs had a strong interaction with PVA/NaAlg blend, as confirmed by FTIR. The addition of ZnMn2O4 NPs led to improved thermal stability of the polymer nanocomposites films. Additionally, the nanocomposites films' mechanical characteristics were examined. The loading of ZnMn2O4 nanoparticles has been associated with an increasing trend in the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, including its toughness, Young's modulus, Tensile strength (Ts), and elongation. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposites against fungus and bacteria was studied. Additionally, PVA/NaAlg-ZnMn2O4 nanocomposites films had good antibacterial characteristics against environmental microorganisms such as Gram-positive (G+) S. aureus and Gram-negative(G-) E. coli bacteria as well as fungi C. albicans and A. niger. It was observed that the biodegradability of the nanocomposite films was lower compared to the pure PVA/NaAlg film. Compared to pure film, the water solubility was decreased upon the addition of ZnMn2O4 NPs. After ZnMn2O4 was added to the pure blend, the WVTR decreased. The produced polymer nanocomposites films appear to be a promising material for food packing, according to these results.

Novel Tannic Acid-Modified Cobalt-Based Metal-Organic Framework: Synthesis, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Activity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of hybrid inorganic-organic materials with typical porous structures and a unique morphology. Due to their diversity, they are extensively used in a wide range of applications such as environmental, catalysis, biomedicine, etc. In this study, a novel cobalt-based MOF modified with tannic acid (Co-TPA/TA) (TPA: terephthalic acid; TA: tannic acid) as a promising material for antimicrobial agents was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis and compared with an as-synthesized cobalt-based framework. Co-TPA/TA demonstrated good antimicrobial efficiency under optimum conditions against yeast Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Gram-negative Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 with an inhibition zone ranging from 14 to 20 mm. Reduced ATP levels, generation of reactive oxygen species, membrane damage from cobalt ion release, and development of an alkaline microenvironment could all be contributing factors to the possible antimicrobial pathways. The novel framework can be obtained using simple, affordable, and easily accessible commercial ligands and is considered to have the potential to be used as an antimicrobial material in the future.

Enhancing physical characteristics and antibacterial efficacy of chitosan through investigation of microwave-assisted chemically formulated chitosan-coated ZnO and chitosan/ZnO physical composite

This study investigates the creation and analysis of chitosan-zinc oxide (CS-ZnO) nanocomposites, exploring their effectiveness in inhibiting bacteria. Two synthesis approaches, physical and chemical, were utilized. The CS-ZnO nanocomposites demonstrated strong antibacterial properties, especially against Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium. Chemically synthesized nanocomposites (CZ10 and CZ100) exhibited larger inhibition zones (16.4 mm and 18.7 mm) compared to physically prepared CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (12.2 mm and 13.8 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, CZ nanocomposites displayed enhanced thermal stability, with decomposition temperatures of 281°C and 290°C, surpassing CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (260°C and 258°C). The residual mass percentages at 800°C were significantly higher for CZ10 and CZ100 (58% and 61%) than for CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (36% and 34%). UV-Visible spectroscopy revealed reduced band gaps in the CS-ZnO nanocomposites, indicating improved light absorption. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed uniform dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles within the chitosan matrix. In conclusion, this research underscores the impressive antimicrobial potential of CS-ZnO nanocomposites, especially against Gram-positive bacteria, and highlights their enhanced thermal stability. These findings hold promise for diverse applications in industries such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, and materials science, contributing to the development of sustainable materials with robust antimicrobial properties.

Improving the optical, thermal, mechanical, electrical properties and antibacterial activity of PVA-chitosan by biosynthesized Ag nanoparticles: Eco-friendly nanocomposites for food packaging applications

In this study, nanocomposite films were produced by blending polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (Cs) polymers with 70 % PVA and 30 % Cs, incorporating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) via a solution-casting method. The research aims to investigate the impact of the biosynthesized Ag NPs by Chenopodium murale leaf extract on optical, morphological, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and antibacterial properties. XRD analysis showed a decrease in crystallinity degree with Ag NPs addition. TEM revealed Ag NPs in cubic and spherical shapes with an average size of 23.4 nm. SEM and AFM indicated surface morphology changes. FT-IR spectra showed interaction between Ag ions and the blend. The energy gap decreased with increasing Ag NPs concentration. TGA exhibited enhanced thermal stability. Mechanical properties improved significantly. AC electrical conductivity and dielectric parameters were studied. Antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was observed. Overall, PVA/Cs-Ag NPs films show promise for food packaging and optoelectronic applications.

Enhanced antibacterial properties of polyvinyl alcohol/starch/chitosan films with NiO-CuO nanoparticles for food packaging

Packaging is very important to maintain the quality of food and prevent the growth of microbes. Therefore, the use of food packaging with antimicrobial properties protects the food from the growth of microorganisms. In this study, antibacterial nanocomposite films of polyvinyl alcohol/starch/chitosan (PVA/ST/CS) together with nickel oxide-copper oxide nanoparticles (NiO-CuONPs) are prepared for food packaging. NiO-CuONPs were synthesized by the co-precipitation method, and structural characterization of nanoparticles (NPs) was carried out by XRD, FTIR, and SEM techniques. Composites of PVA/ST/CS, containing different percentages of NPs, were prepared by casting and characterized by FTIR and FESEM. The mechanical properties, diffusion barrier, and thermal stability were determined. The nanoparticles have a round structure with an average size of 6.7 ± 1.2 nm. The cross-section of PVA/ST/CS film is dense, uniform, and without cracks. In the mechanical tests, the addition of NPs up to 1% improved the mechanical properties (TS = 31.94 MPa), while 2% of NPs lowered TS to 14.76 MPa. The fibroblast cells toxicity and the films antibacterial activity were also examined. The films displayed stronger antibacterial effects against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) compared to Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli). Furthermore, these films have no toxicity to fibroblast cells and the survival rate of these cells in contact with the films is more than 84%. Therefore, this film is recommended for food packaging due to its excellent mechanical and barrier properties, good antibacterial activity, and non-toxicity.

Preparation and characterization of gelatin/chitosan nanocomposite reinforced by NiO nanoparticles as an active food packaging

Food packaging with antibacterial properties has attracted much attention recently. In this study, nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs) were synthesized by co-precipitation and then gelatin/chitosan polymer films (GEL/CS) with different percentages of NiONPs, bio-nanocomposites, were prepared by casting. Morphology, crystal microstructure, molecular interactions and thermal stabilities of the NPs and the composite films were characterized by FESEM, XRD, FTIR and TGA, respectively. The bio-nanocomposite films exhibited excellent barrier, thermal and mechanical properties by addition of an optimized content of NPs. For example, the tensile strength (TS) of the GEL/CS film without NPs was 23.83 MPa and increased to 30.13 MPa by incorporation of 1% NPs. The antibacterial properties and toxicity of the films were investigated. These films show good antibacterial behavior against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria compared to Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. Furthermore, the films were found to be non-toxic to fibroblast cells that came into contact with the films, with a survival rate of more than 88%. Therefore, these films can be applied for food packaging due to their excellent mechanical, barrier, and antibacterial properties.

Lepidium sativum Seed Extract-Mediated Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles: Structural, Morphological, Optical, Hemolysis, and Antibacterial Studies

Nanomaterials have unique physicochemical properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Besides, biologically synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) have proven superior to other methods. This work aimed to biosynthesize zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs using an aqueous extract of Lepidium sativum seed. The obtained ZnO NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The in vitro antibacterial activity of ZnO NPs against Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria was assessed using the disk diffusion technique. The hemolytic impact was quantified spectrophotometrically. The results indicated a 24.2 nm crystallite size, a hexagonal structure phase, and a 3.48 eV optical bandgap. Antibacterial studies revealed a dose-dependent response with comparable activity to the standard drug (gentamicin) and higher activity against S. aureus than E. coli, e.g., the zone of inhibition at 120 mg/mL was 23 ± 1.25 and 16 ± 1.00 mm, respectively. The hemolysis assay showed no potential harm due to ZnO NPs toward red blood cells if utilized in low doses. As a result, it could be concluded that the reported biogenic method for synthesizing ZnO NPs is promising, resulting in hemocompatible NPs and comparable bactericidal agents.

Awareness raising and dealing with methanol poisoning based on effective strategies

Intoxication with methanol most commonly occurs as a consequence of ingesting, inhaling, or coming into contact with formulations that include methanol as a base. Clinical manifestations of methanol poisoning include suppression of the central nervous system, gastrointestinal symptoms, and decompensated metabolic acidosis, which is associated with impaired vision and either early or late blindness within 0.5-4 h after ingestion. After ingestion, methanol concentrations in the blood that are greater than 50 mg/dl should raise some concern. Ingested methanol is typically digested by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and it is subsequently redistributed to the body's water to attain a volume distribution that is about equivalent to 0.77 L/kg. Moreover, it is removed from the body as its natural, unchanged parent molecules. Due to the fact that methanol poisoning is relatively uncommon but frequently involves a large number of victims at the same time, this type of incident occupies a special position in the field of clinical toxicology. The beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an increase in erroneous assumptions regarding the preventative capability of methanol in comparison to viral infection. More than 1000 Iranians fell ill, and more than 300 of them passed away in March of this year after they consumed methanol in the expectation that it would protect them from a new coronavirus. The Atlanta epidemic, which involved 323 individuals and resulted in the deaths of 41, is one example of mass poisoning. Another example is the Kristiansand outbreak, which involved 70 people and resulted in the deaths of three. In 2003, the AAPCC received reports of more than one thousand pediatric exposures. Since methanol poisoning is associated with high mortality rates, it is vital that the condition be addressed seriously and managed as quickly as feasible. The objective of this review was to raise awareness about the mechanism and metabolism of methanol toxicity, the introduction of therapeutic interventions such as gastrointestinal decontamination and methanol metabolism inhibition, the correction of metabolic disturbances, and the establishment of novel diagnostic/screening nanoparticle-based strategies for methanol poisoning such as the discovery of ADH inhibitors as well as the detection of the adulteration of alcoholic drinks by nanoparticles in order to prevent methanol poisoning. In conclusion, increasing warnings and knowledge about clinical manifestations, medical interventions, and novel strategies for methanol poisoning probably results in a decrease in the death load.

Evaluation of mechanical, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties of vanillic acid induced chitosan/poly (vinyl alcohol) active films to prolong the shelf life of green chilli

Vanillic acid incorporated chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) active films were prepared by employing a cost-effective solvent casting technique. FTIR investigation validated the intermolecular interaction and formation of Schiff's base (C=N) between functional groups of vanillic acid, chitosan, and poly(vinyl alcohol). The addition of vanillic acid resulted in homogenous and dense morphology, as confirmed by SEM micrographs. The tensile strength of active films increased from 32 to 59 MPa as the amount of vanillic acid increased and the obtained values are more significant than reported polyethylene (2231 MPa) and polypropylene (31-38 MPa) films, widely utilized in food packaging. Active film's UV, water, and oxygen barrier properties exhibited excellent results with the incorporation of vanillic acid. Around 40 % of degradation commences within 15 days. Synergistic impact against S. aureus, E. coli, and C. albicans pathogens caused the expansion of the inhibition zone, evidenced by the excellent antimicrobial activity. The highest antioxidant capacity, 73.65 % of CPV-4 active film, proved that active films could prevent the spoilage of food from oxidation. Green chillies packaging was carried out to examine the potential of prepared active films as packaging material results in successfully sustaining carotenoid accumulation and prolonging the shelf life compared to conventional polyethylene (PE) packaging.

Fabrication, Characterization and Adsorption Investigation of Nano Zinc Oxide–Sodium Alginate Beads for Effective Removal of Chromium (VI) from Aqueous Solution

Alginate–zinc oxide (Alg–ZnO) biocomposite was synthesized and tested as a chromium ions Cr(VI) adsorbent for environmental applications. Alg–ZnO biocomposite was prepared by the interaction between sodium alginate biopolymer and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO–NPs), prepared by modified wet chemical method. The solid adsorption characteristics of the synthesized Alg–ZnO biocomposite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Adsorption isotherms of chromium ions on the prepared Alg–ZnO biocomposite were investigated with varying the initial concentration of Cr(VI) under different application conditions such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and temperature. Adsorption of Cr(VI) was investigated by different isotherm models such as Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin–Radushkevich models. Maximum adsorption capacities (31.09 and 34.63 mg/g) were achieved by ZnO–NPs and Alg–ZnO, respectively at 25 °C. The results of isotherm models indicate the perfect applicability of Langmuir and Dubinin–Radushkevich models, revealing the dominance of monolayer and the physisorption of chromium ions onto the studied adsorbents.

Antimicrobial Nano-Zinc Oxide Biocomposites for Wound Healing Applications: A Review

Chronic wounds are a major concern for global health, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. As their occurrence is correlated with age and age-related comorbidities, their incidence in the population is set to increase in the forthcoming years. This burden is further worsened by the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which causes wound infections that are increasingly hard to treat with current antibiotics. Antimicrobial bionanocomposites are an emerging class of materials that combine the biocompatibility and tissue-mimicking properties of biomacromolecules with the antimicrobial activity of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles. Among these nanostructured agents, zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most promising for its microbicidal effects and its anti-inflammatory properties, and as a source of essential zinc ions. This review analyses the most recent developments in the field of nano-ZnO–bionanocomposite (nZnO-BNC) materials—mainly in the form of films, but also hydrogel or electrospun bandages—from the different preparation techniques to their properties and antibacterial and wound-healing performances. The effect of nanostructured ZnO on the mechanical, water and gas barrier, swelling, optical, thermal, water affinity, and drug-release properties are examined and linked to the preparation methods. Antimicrobial assays over a wide range of bacterial strains are extensively surveyed, and wound-healing studies are finally considered to provide a comprehensive assessment framework. While early results are promising, a systematic and standardised testing procedure for the comparison of antibacterial properties is still lacking, partly because of a not-yet fully understood antimicrobial mechanism. This work, therefore, allowed, on one hand, the determination of the best strategies for the design, engineering, and application of n-ZnO-BNC, and, on the other hand, the identification of the current challenges and opportunities for future research.

Photo- and Water-Degradation Phenomena of ZnO Bio-Blend Based on Poly(lactic acid) and Polyamide 11

The goal of this work was to investigate the morphological and chemical–physical changes induced by adding ZnO nanoparticles to bio-based polymeric materials based on polylactic acid (PLA) and polyamide 11 (PA11). Precisely, the photo- and water-degradation phenomena of nanocomposite materials were monitored. For this purpose, the formulation and characterization of novel bio-nanocomposite blends based on PLA and PA11 at a ratio of 70/30 wt.% filled with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures at different percentages were performed. The effect of ZnO nanoparticles (≤2 wt.%) within the blends was thoroughly explored by employing thermogravimetry (TGA), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Adding up to 1% wt. of ZnO resulted in a higher thermal stability of the PA11/PLA blends, with a decrement lower than 8% in terms of molar masses (MMs) values being obtained during blend processing at 200 °C. ZnO promoted trans-ester-amide reactions between the two polymers, leading to the formation of PLA/PA11 copolymers. These species could work as compatibilisers at the polymer interface, improving thermal and mechanical properties. However, the addition of higher quantities of ZnO affected such properties, influencing the photo-oxidative behaviour and thus thwarting the material’s application for packaging use. The PLA and blend formulations were subjected to natural aging in seawater for two weeks under natural light exposure. The 0.5% wt. ZnO sample induced polymer degradation with a decrease of 34% in the MMs compared to the neat samples.

Enhancement of antifouling properties, metal ions and protein separation of poly(ether-ether-sulfone) ultrafiltration membranes by incorporation of poly ethylene glycol and n-ZnO

Composite polymeric membranes with enhanced anti-fouling properties, antimicrobial activities and flux were produced via the phase inversion technique using poly (ether-ether-sulfone) (PEES)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) and n-ZnO. SEM and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy were used to study the morphological and chemical properties of the resulting ultrafiltration membranes. PEG and n-ZnO concentration has an effect on membrane morphologies, ultrafiltration performance, thermal characteristics, metal ion separation studies, surface hydrophilicity and anti-fouling capabilities. The permeate flux increased when the PEG concentration was raised. This results revealed that adding PEG and n-ZnO to membranes increased their surface hydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties. The inclusion of 1.5 wt % n-ZnO and 5 wt % PEG to the pristine PEES membrane resulted in a higher flux of 233.76 L m^-2 h^-1, 70.09 % of water content, 47.46° of contact angle, the porosity of 30.20 %, and hydraulic resistance of 0.22 kPa/Lm^-2h^-1. Anti-fouling properties of the fabricated membrane were assessed using a model foulant BSA, which revealed a high flux recovery ratio value. As a result, the PEG and n-ZnO incorporated membrane is more hydrophilic than the virgin membrane. In addition, the prepared PEES/PEG/n-ZnO membrane showed a significant increase in metal ions and protein rejection. Furthermore, an antibacterial test of the membrane revealed that the PEG and n-ZnO composite membrane outperformed the bare PEES membrane in terms of antibacterial capabilities. Overall, the findings reveal that combining n-ZnO and PEG resulted in a membrane with improved anti-fouling capabilities and hydrophilicity, making it suitable for water purification.

Retinol-Loaded Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Based Hydrogels as Suitable Biomaterials with Antimicrobial Properties for the Proliferation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels are well-known biomimetic 3D systems for mammalian cell cultures to mimic native tissues. Recently, several biomolecules were intended for use in PVA hydrogels to improve their biological properties. However, retinol, an important biomolecule, has not been combined with a PVA hydrogel for culturing bone marrow mesenchymal stem (BMMS) cells. Thus, for the first time, the effect of retinol on the physicochemical, antimicrobial, and cell proliferative properties of a PVA hydrogel was investigated. The ability of protein (3.15 nm) and mineral adsorption (4.8 mg/mL) of a PVA hydrogel was improved by 0.5 wt.% retinol. The antimicrobial effect of hydrogel was more significant in S. aureus (39.3 mm) than in E. coli (14.6 mm), and the effect was improved by increasing the retinol concentration. The BMMS cell proliferation was more upregulated in retinol-loaded PVA hydrogel than in the control at 7 days. We demonstrate that the respective in vitro degradation rate of retinol-loaded PVA hydrogels (RPH) (75-78% degradation) may promote both antibacterial and cellular proliferation. Interestingly, the incorporation of retinol did not affect the cell-loading capacity of PVA hydrogel. Accordingly, the fabricated PVA retinol hydrogel proved its compatibility in a stem cell culture and could be a potential biomaterial for tissue regeneration.

Palladium encapsulated nanofibres for scavenging ethylene from sapota fruits

Scavenging ethylene is a useful intervention during the transportation and storage of tropical climacteric fruits like sapota. Sapota (Manilkara achras Mill.) is a delicious tropical fruit with a very high respiration rate and poor shelf life. To prolong its post-harvest shelf life, the use of palladium chloride in electrospun nanomats was evaluated at a concentration varying from 1 to 4% levels. Encapsulation of 1–2% PdCl2 in nanomats increased the ethylene scavenging capacity (ESC) by 47–68%. Although, upon encapsulation, both PdCl2 and potassium permanganate showed significantly the same ethylene scavenging activity, the efficacy of PdCl2 was found better in presence of sapota fruits. The PdCl2 nanomats were brighter (L* > 73) in colour compared to the potassium permanganate mat. The placement of nanomats (2 cm2 × 9 cm2) in corrugated fibre board boxes in which the sapota was packed showed higher quality indices (firmness, TSS, ascorbic acid, and phenolics) along with lower PLW and respiration rate during the 8 days of storage period. Compared to control (8.35%), physiological loss in weight of 4.47% was recorded in fruits stored with ethylene scavenging nanomats. PdCl2 encapsulated PVA nanomats can emerge as a promising option for the retention of quality in fruits during storage and transit.

Combined Effect of Microstructure, Surface Energy, and Adhesion Force on the Friction of PVA/Ferrite Spinel Nanocomposites

Nanocomposite films based on spinel ferrite (Mg_0.8Zn_0.2Fe_1.5Al_0.5O₄) in a PVA matrix were obtained. An increase in the spinel concentration to 10 wt.% caused an avalanche-like rise in roughness due to the formation of nanoparticle agglomerates. The lateral mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM) allowed us to trace the agglomeration dynamics. An unexpected result was that the composite with 6 wt.% of filler had a low friction coefficient in comparison with similar composites due to the successfully combined effects of low roughness and surface energy. The friction coefficient decreased to 0.07 when the friction coefficient of pure PVA was 0.72. A specially developed method for measuring nano-objects' surface energy using AFM made it possible to explain the anomalous nature of the change in tribological characteristics.

Studying the effect of polymethyl methacrylate polymer opticals fibers (POFs) on the performance of composite materials based on the polyether ether ketone (PEEK) polymer matrix

More recently, various techniques have been implemented for the sensors manufacturing purpose, such as fiber Bragg gratings fibers (FBG) that allows variable core refractive index suitable for a large scale of measurements types, fiber optic evanescent waves (FOEW) for water parameters measurement, microstructured and crystal photonic optical fibers, polymers optical fiber (POFs), and so on. In this perspective, the objective of this work is to study the reliability and the origin of the resistance of each fiber-matrix interface of the composite materials PMMA/PEEK, Topas/PEEK, and Topas-Zeonex/PEEK. The genetic simulation is based on the probabilistic approach of Weibull to calculate the damage at the interface by crossing the two damages of the matrix and the fiber respectively. The results show that the PMMA/PEEK composite is the most resistant to the mechanical stresses applied compared to those Topas/PEEK and Topas-Zeonex/PEEK; these results were confirmed by the level of damage to the interface observed for the studied materials. The performed calculations are in good agreement with the analytical results of Cox, where he demonstrated that Young's modulus of fibers have an important influence on the shear strength of the fiber-matrix interface of composite materials. Based on the obtained results, the present study gives the opportunity for the proposed materials (PMMA/PEEK and Zeonex/PEEK) to be as potential candidates for the smart digital applications and telecoms aims.

Fabrication of Guided Tissue Regeneration Membrane Using Lignin-Mediated ZnO Nanoparticles in Biopolymer Matrix for Antimicrobial Activity

Periodontal disease is a common complication, and conventional periodontal surgery can lead to severe bleeding. Different membranes have been used for periodontal treatment with limitations, such as improper biodegradation, poor mechanical property, and no effective hemostatic property. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membranes favoring periodontal regeneration were prepared to overcome these shortcomings. The mucilage of the chia seed was extracted and utilized to prepare the guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membrane. Lignin having antibacterial properties was used to synthesize lignin-mediated ZnO nanoparticles (∼Lignin@ZnO) followed by characterization with analytical techniques like Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–visible spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope (SEM). To fabricate the GTR membrane, extracted mucilage, Lignin@ZnO, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were mixed in different ratios to obtain a thin film. The fabricated GTR membrane was evaluated using a dynamic fatigue analyzer for mechanical properties. Appropriate degradation rates were approved by degradability analysis in water for different intervals of time. The fabricated GTR membrane showed excellent antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacterial species.

Electroconductive Polyaniline–Ag-ZnO Green Nanocomposite Material

Metal-conducting polyaniline (PANI)-based nanocomposite materials have attracted attention in various applications due to their synergism of electrical, mechanical, and optical properties of the initial components. Herein, metal-PANI nanocomposites, including silver nanoparticle-polyaniline (AgNP-PANI), zinc oxide nanoparticle-polyaniline (ZnONP-PANI), and silver-zinc oxide nanoparticle-polyaniline (Ag–ZnONP-PANI), were prepared using the two processes. Nanocomposite-based electrode platforms were prepared by depositing AgNPs, ZnONPs, or Ag–ZnONPs on a PANI modified glass carbon electrode (GCE) in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-Hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS, 1:2) as coupling agents. The incorporation of AgNPs, ZnONPs, and Ag–ZnONPs onto PANI was confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, which showed five absorbance bands at 216 nm, 412 nm, 464 nm, 550 nm, and 831 nm (i.e., transition of π-π*, π-polaron band transition, polaron-π* electronic transition, and AgNPs). The FTIR characteristic signatures of the nanocomposite materials exhibited stretching arising from C–H aromatic, C–O, and C–N stretching mode for benzenoid rings, and =C–H plane bending vibration formed during protonation. The CV voltammograms of the nanocomposite materials showed a quasi-reversible behavior with increased redox current response. Notably, AgNP–PANI–GCE electrode showed the highest conductivity, which was attributed the high conductivity of silver. The increase in peak currents exhibited by the composites shows that AgNPs and ZnONPs improve the electrical properties of PANI, and they could be potential candidates for electrochemical applications.

Facile and Green Synthesis of Silver Quantum Dots Immobilized onto a Polymeric CTS-PEO Blend for the Photocatalytic Degradation of p-Nitrophenol

Immobilization of inorganic metal quantum dots (especially, noble transition metals) onto organic polymers to synthesize nanometal-polymer composites (NMPCs) has attracted considerable attention because of their advanced optical, electrical, catalytic/photocatalytic, and biological properties. Herein, novel, highly efficient, stable, and visible light-active NMPC photocatalysts consisting of silver quantum dots (Ag QDs) immobilized onto polymeric chitosan-polyethylene oxide (CTS-PEO) blend sheets have been successfully prepared by an in situ self-assembly facile casting method as a facile and green approach. The CTS-PEO blend polymer acts as a reducing and a stabilizing agent for Ag QDs which does not generate any environmental chemical pollutant. The prepared x wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites were fully characterized through X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis, and UV/visible spectroscopy. The characterization results indicated the successful synthesis of the Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites by the interactions and complexation between x wt % Ag QDs and CTS-PEO blend sheets. TEM images revealed small granules randomly distributed onto the CTS-PEO blend sheets, indicating the immobilization of Ag QDs onto CTS-PEO composites. The presence of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band and the shifting of the absorption edge toward higher wavelengths in the UV/vis spectra indicated the formation of x wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites. The Ag QDs in the polymeric blend matrix led to remarkable enhancement in the optical, thermal, electrical, and photocatalytic properties of x wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites. The photocatalytic efficiency of the prepared composites was evaluated by the photodegradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) under simulated sunlight. The maximum photocatalytic degradation reached 91.1% efficiency within 3 h for the 12.0 wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO photocatalyst. Generally, the Ag QDs immobilized onto CTS-PEO blend composites significantly enhance the SPR effect and the synergistic effect and reduce the band gap, leading to a high photocatalytic activity.

Whey Proteins-Zinc Oxide Bionanocomposite as Antibacterial Films

The use of toxic crosslinking agents and reagents in the fabrication of hydrogels is a frequent issue which is particularly concerning for biomedical or food packaging applications. In this study, novel antibacterial bionanocomposite films were obtained through a simple solvent casting technique without using any crosslinking substance. Films were made from a flexible and transparent whey protein matrix containing zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesised via a wet chemical precipitation route. The physicochemical and functional properties of the ZnO nanoparticles and of the composite films were characterised, and their antibacterial activity was tested against S. epidermidis and E. coli. The synthesised ZnO nanoparticles had an average size of about 30 nm and a specific surface area of 49.5 m2/g. The swelling ratio of the bionanocomposite films increased at basic pH, which is an appealing feature in relation to the absorption of chronic wound exudate. A n-ZnO concentration-dependent antibacterial effect was observed for composite films. In particular, marked antibacterial activity was observed against S. epidermidis. Overall, these findings suggest that this novel material can be a promising and sustainable alternative in the design of advanced solutions for wound dressing or food packaging.

Inorganic Nanoparticles and Composite Films for Antimicrobial Therapies

The development of drug-resistant microorganisms has become a critical issue for modern medicine and drug discovery and development with severe socio-economic and ecological implications. Since standard and conventional treatment options are generally inefficient, leading to infection persistence and spreading, novel strategies are fundamentally necessary in order to avoid serious global health problems. In this regard, both metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) demonstrated increased effectiveness as nanobiocides due to intrinsic antimicrobial properties and as nanocarriers for antimicrobial drugs. Among them, gold, silver, copper, zinc oxide, titanium oxide, magnesium oxide, and iron oxide NPs are the most preferred, owing to their proven antimicrobial mechanisms and bio/cytocompatibility. Furthermore, inorganic NPs can be incorporated or attached to organic/inorganic films, thus broadening their application within implant or catheter coatings and wound dressings. In this context, this paper aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the most recent studies investigating inorganic NPs and their integration into composite films designed for antimicrobial therapies.

Development of a Solid Dispersion of Nystatin with Maltodextrin as a Carrier Agent: Improvements in Antifungal Efficacy against Candida spp. Biofilm Infections

The aim of this study was to improve the treatment of Candida albicans biofilms through the use of nystatin solid dispersions developed using maltodextrins as a hyperosmotic carrier. Characterization studies by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, dissolution studies, and particle size analysis were performed to evaluate changes in nystatin crystallinity. Antifungal activity and anti-biofilm efficacy were assessed by microbiological techniques. The results for nystatin solid dispersions showed that the enhancement of antifungal activity may be related to the high proportions of maltodextrins. Anti-biofilm assays showed a significant reduction (more than 80%) on biofilm formation with SD-N:MD [1:6] compared to the nystatin reference suspension. The elaboration process and physicochemical properties of SD-N:MD [1:6] could be a promising strategy for treatment of Candida biofilms.
