Poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) grafted on PVA hydrogel via a novel surface modification method under near-infrared light for enhancement of antifouling properties

Zwitterion mediated anti-protein adsorption on polypropylene mesh to reduce inflammation for efficient hernia repair

The effectiveness of polypropylene (PP) mesh is often compromised by severe inflammation. Engineering anti-inflammatory coatings has significant implications for PP mesh to repair unwanted hernias. Here, we presented a facile strategy to develop an anti-fouling coating consisting of zwitterionic poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) (PCBMA), which could prohibit protein adsorption to endow PP mesh with anti-inflammatory efficacy. The incorporation of PCBMA coating had little impact on the raw features of PP mesh. While the modified mesh PCBMA-PP possessed noticeable hydrophilicity increase and surface charge reduction. The excellent lubricity and surface stability enabled PCBMA-PP to exhibit superior anti-fouling capacity, thus efficiently inhibiting the adsorption of proteins. In vivo experiments showed that incorporating the PCBMA layer could provide PP meshes with outstanding anti-inflammatory effects and tissue compatibility for repairing hernias.

Construction of a Soft Antifouling PAA/PSBMA Hydrogel Coating with High Toughness and Low Swelling through the Dynamic Coordination Bonding Provided by Al(OH)3 Nanoparticles

Marine biofouling, resulting from the adhesion of marine organisms to ship surfaces, has long been a significant issue in the maritime industry. In this paper, we focused on utilizing soft and hydrophilic hydrogels as a potential approach for antifouling (AF) coatings. Acrylic acid (AA) with a polyelectrolyte effect and N-(3-sulfopropyl)-N-(methacryloxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylammonium betaine (SBMA) with an antipolyelectrolyte effect were selected as monomers. By adjusting the monomer ratio, we were able to create hydrogel coatings that exhibited low swelling ratio in both fresh water and seawater. The Al(OH)3 nanoparticle, as a physical cross-linker, provided better mechanical properties (higher tensile strength and larger elongation at break) than the chemical cross-linker through the dynamic coordination bonds and plentiful hydrogen bonds. Additionally, we incorporated trehalose into the hydrogel, enabling the repair of the hydrogel network through covalent-like hydrogen bonding. The zwitterion compound SBMA endowed the hydrogel with excellent AF performance. It was found that the highest SBMA content did not lead to the best antibacterial performance, as bacterial adhesion quantity was also influenced by the charge of the hydrogel. The hydrogel with appropriate SBMA content being close to electrical neutrality exhibits the strongest zwitterionic property of PSBMA chains, resulting in the best antibacterial adhesion performance. Furthermore, the pronounced hydrophilicity of SBMA enhanced the lubrication of the hydrogel surface, thereby reducing the friction resistance when applied to the hull surface during ship navigation.

Near-Infrared Light-Induced Reversible Deactivation Radical Polymerization: Expanding Frontiers in Photopolymerization

Photoinduced reversible deactivation radical polymerization (photo-RDRP) or photoinduced controlled/living radical polymerization has emerged as a versatile and powerful technique for preparing functional and advanced polymer materials under mild conditions by harnessing light energy. While UV and visible light (λ = 400-700 nm) are extensively employed in photo-RDRP, the utilization of near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths (λ = 700-2500 nm) beyond the visible region remains relatively unexplored. NIR light possesses unique properties, including enhanced light penetration, reduced light scattering, and low biomolecule absorption, thereby providing opportunities for applying photo-RDRP in the fields of manufacturing and medicine. This comprehensive review categorizes all known NIR light-induced RDRP (NIR-RDRP) systems into four mechanism-based types: mediation by upconversion nanoparticles, mediation by photocatalysts, photothermal conversion, and two-photon absorption. The distinct photoinitiation pathways associated with each mechanism are discussed. Furthermore, this review highlights the diverse applications of NIR-RDRP reported to date, including 3D printing, polymer brush fabrication, drug delivery, nanoparticle synthesis, and hydrogel formation. By presenting these applications, the review underscores the exceptional capabilities of NIR-RDRP and offers guidance for developing high-performance and versatile photopolymerization systems. Exploiting the unique properties of NIR light unlocks new opportunities for synthesizing functional and advanced polymer materials.

A novel bioartificial pancreas fabricated via islets microencapsulation in anti-adhesive core-shell microgels and macroencapsulation in a hydrogel scaffold prevascularized in vivo

Islets transplantation is a promising treatment for type 1 diabetes mellitus. However, severe host immune rejection and poor oxygen/nutrients supply due to the lack of surrounding capillary network often lead to transplantation failure. Herein, a novel bioartificial pancreas is constructed via islets microencapsulation in core-shell microgels and macroencapsulation in a hydrogel scaffold prevascularized in vivo. Specifically, a hydrogel scaffold containing methacrylated gelatin (GelMA), methacrylated heparin (HepMA) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is fabricated, which can delivery VEGF in a sustained style and thus induce subcutaneous angiogenesis. In addition, islets-laden core-shell microgels using methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA) as microgel core and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA)/carboxybetaine methacrylate (CBMA) as shell layer are prepared, which provide a favorable microenvironment for islets and simultaneously the inhibition of host immune rejection via anti-adhesion of proteins and immunocytes. As a result of the synergistic effect between anti-adhesive core-shell microgels and prevascularized hydrogel scaffold, the bioartificial pancreas can reverse the blood glucose levels of diabetic mice from hyperglycemia to normoglycemia for at least 90 days. We believe this bioartificial pancreas and relevant fabrication method provide a new strategy to treat type 1 diabetes, and also has broad potential applications in other cell therapies.

Bio-Inspired Active Self-Cleaning Surfaces via Filament-Like Sweepers Array

Hydrodynamic forces from moving fluids can be utilized to remove contaminants which is an ideal fouling-release strategy for underwater surfaces. However, the hydrodynamic forces in the viscous sublayer are greatly reduced owing to the no-slip condition, which restricts their practical applications. Here, inspired by sweeper tentacles of corals, an active self-cleaning surface with flexible filament-like sweepers are reported. The sweepers can penetrate the viscous sublayer by utilizing energy from outer turbulent flows and remove contaminants with adhesion strength of >30 kPa. Under an oscillating flow, the removal rate of the single sweeper can reach up to 99.5% due to dynamic buckling movements. In addition, the sweepers array can completely clean its coverage area within 10 s through coordinated movements as symplectic waves. The active self-cleaning surface depends on the fluid-structure coupling between sweepers and flows, which breaks the concept of conventional self-cleaning.

Anti-Biofouling Polymers with Special Surface Wettability for Biomedical Applications

The use of anti-biofouling polymers has widespread potential for counteracting marine, medical, and industrial biofouling. The anti-biofouling action is usually related to the degree of surface wettability. This review is focusing on anti-biofouling polymers with special surface wettability, and it will provide a new perspective to promote the development of anti-biofouling polymers for biomedical applications. Firstly, current anti-biofouling strategies are discussed followed by a comprehensive review of anti-biofouling polymers with specific types of surface wettability, including superhydrophilicity, hydrophilicity, and hydrophobicity. We then summarize the applications of anti-biofouling polymers with specific surface wettability in typical biomedical fields both in vivo and in vitro, such as cardiology, ophthalmology, and nephrology. Finally, the challenges and directions of the development of anti-biofouling polymers with special surface wettability are discussed. It is helpful for future researchers to choose suitable anti-biofouling polymers with special surface wettability for specific biomedical applications.
