Abstract
Nitrate pollution in groundwater is a serious problem worldwide, as its concentration in many areas exceeds the WHO-defined drinking water standard (50 mg/L). Hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) are a group of microorganisms capable of producing single-cell protein (SCP) using hydrogen and oxygen. Furthermore, HOB can utilize various nitrogen sources, including nitrate. This study developed a novel hybrid biological-inorganic (HBI) system that coupled a new submersible water electrolysis system driven by renewable electricity with HOB fermentation for in-situ nitrate recovery from polluted groundwater and simultaneously upcycling it together with CO2 into single-cell protein. The performance of the novel HBI system was first evaluated in terms of bacterial growth and nitrate removal efficiency. With 5 V voltage applied and the initial nitrate concentration of 100 mg/L, the nitrate removal efficiency of 85.52 % and raw of 47.71 % (with a broad amino acid spectrum) were obtained. Besides, the HBI system was affected by the applied voltages and initial nitrogen concentrations. The water electrolysis with 3 and 4 V cannot provide sufficient H2 for HOB and the removal of nitrate was 57.12 % and 59.22 % at 180 h, while it reached 65.14 % and 65.42 % at 5 and 6 V, respectively. The nitrate removal efficiency reached 58.40 % and 50.72 % within 180 h with 200 and 300 mg/L initial nitrate concentrations, respectively. Moreover, a larger anion exchange membrane area promoted nitrate removal. The monitored of the determination of different forms of nitrogen indicated that around 60 % of the recovered nitrate was assimilated into cells, and 40 % was bio-converted to N2. The results demonstrate a potentially sustainable method for remediating nitrate contaminant in groundwater, upcycling waste nitrogen, CO2 sequestration and valorization of renewable electricity into food or feed.

Abstract
Recovering resources from wastewater to alleviate the energy crisis has become the prevailing trend of technological development. Purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB), a group of fast-growing microbes, have been widely noticed for their potential in producing value-added products from waste streams. However, saline contents in these waste streams, such as food processing wastewater pose a big challenge, which not only restrain the pollutant removal efficiency, but also hinder the growth of functional microbes. To overcome this, a photo anaerobic membrane bioreactor cultivating PPB (PPB-MBR) was constructed and its performance upon long-term salinity stress was investigated. PPB-MBR achieved desirable pollutants removal performance with the average COD and NH4+ removal efficiency being 87% (±8%, n = 87) and 89% (±10%, n = 87), respectively during long-term exposure to salinity stress of 1-80 g NaCl L-1. PPB were predominant during the entire operation period of 87 days (60%-80%), obtaining maximum biomass yield of 0.67 g biomass g-1 CODremoved and protein productivity of 0.18 g L-1 d-1 at the salinity level of 20 g NaCl L-1 and 60 g NaCl L-1, respectively. The sum of value-added products in proportion to the biomass reached 58% at maximum at the salinity level of 60 g NaCl L-1 with protein, pigments and trehalose contributing to 44%, 8.7%, and 5%, respectively. Based on economic analysis, the most cost-saving scenario treating food processing wastewater was revealed at salinity level of around 20 g NaCl L-1. However, more optimization tools are needed to boost the production efficiency so that the profit from value-added products can outweigh the additional cost by excess salinity in the future implication.

Abstract
Single cell protein (SCP) has emerged as an alternative protein source, potentially based on the recovery of carbon and nutrients from waste-derived resources as part of the circular economy. From those resources, gaseous substrates have the advantage of an easy sterilization, allowing the production of pathogen-free SCP. Sterile gaseous substrates allow producing pathogen-free SCP. This study evaluated the use of an enriched phototrophic purple bacteria (PPB) consortium for SCP production using H2 and CO2 as electron and C sources. The influence of pH (6.0-8.5), temperature (15-50 °C) and light intensity (0-50 W·m-2) on the growth kinetics and biomass yields was investigated using batch tests. Optimal conditions were found at pH 7, 25 °C and light intensities over 30 W·m-2. High biomass and protein yields were achieved (~ 1 g CODbiomass·g CODH2consumed-1 and 3.9-4.4 g protein·g H2-1) regardless of the environmental conditions, being amongst the highest values reported from gaseous streams. These high yields were obtained thanks to the use of light as a sole energy source by the PPB consortium, allowing a total utilization of H2 for growth. Hydrogen uptake rates varied considerably, with values up to 61 ± 5 mg COD·d-1 for the overall H2 consumption rates and 2.00 ± 0.14 g COD·g COD-1·d-1 for the maximum specific uptake rates under optimal growth conditions. The latter value was estimated using a mechanistic model able to represent PPB growth on H2. The biomass exhibited high protein contents (>50 % w/w) and adequate amino acid profiles, showing its suitability as SCP for feed. PPB were the dominant bacteria during the experiments (relative abundance over 80 % in most tests), with a stable population dominated by Rhodobacter sp. and Rhodopseudomonas sp. This study demonstrates the potential of enriched PPB cultures for H2 bioconversion into SCP.

Abstract
The accumulation of a large amount of organic solid waste and the lack of sufficient protein supply worldwide are two major challenges caused by rapid population growth. Anaerobic digestion is the main force of organic waste treatment, and the high-value utilization of its products (biogas and digestate) has been widely concerned. These products can be used as nutrients and energy sources for microorganisms such as microalgae, yeast, methane-oxidizing bacteria(MOB), and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria(HOB) to produce single cell protein(SCP), which contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals. This new model of energy conversion can construct a bioeconomic cycle from waste to nutritional products, which treats waste without additional carbon emissions and can harvest high-value biomass. Techno-economic analysis shows that the SCP from biogas and digestate has higher profit than biogas electricity generation, and its production cost is lower than the SCP using special raw materials as the substrate. In this review, the case of SCP-rich microorganisms using anaerobic digestion products for growth was investigated. Some of the challenges faced by the process and the latest developments were analyzed, and their potential economic and environmental value was verified.

Abstract
Purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) can produce single-cell protein from wastewater at high yields. Growing in a biofilm vs suspended can improve product quality and consistency. This study compares suspended and attached growths of enriched PPB cultures in an outdoor flat plate photobioreactor treating poultry-processing wastewater. Attached growth had lower VFA removal efficiencies (95 ± 2.7 vs 84 ± 6.4 %) due to light limitations and low substrate diffusion rates. Nevertheless, similar overall treatment performances and productivities were achieved (16 ± 2.2 and 18 ± 2.4 gCOD·m-2·d-1 for attached and suspended) at loading rates of 1.2-1.5 gCOD·L-1·d-1. Biofilms had higher quality than suspended biomass, with lower ash contents (6.9(0.6)% vs 57(16)%) and higher PPB abundances (0.45-0.67 vs 0.30-0.45). The biofilm (20-50 % of the total biomass) might be used as feed and the suspended fraction as fertiliser, improving the economics of the process. Semi-continuous PPB growth outdoors as biofilm is technically feasible, obtaining a superior product without jeopardising performance.

Abstract
The study evaluated the effects of dietary phosphorus supplementation on the fishmeal replacement with Clostridium autoethanogenum protein (CAP) in the diet of L. vannamei. Four isonitrogenous and isolipid diets were formulated: the PC diet contains 25% fishmeal, the NC, P1 and P2 diets were replaced 40% fishmeal with CAP and supplemented with 0, 0.8 and 1.6% NaH2PO4 respectively (equivalent to dietary phosphorus level of 0.96%, 1.12% and 1.27%). Sampling and V. parahaemolyticus challenge test were conducted after 50-day-feeding (initial shrimp weight 1.79 ± 0.02 g). The results showed that there were no significant differences in the growth performance of shrimp among the 4 groups. The expressions of dorsal in the gut were significantly lower in shrimp fed the P1 and P2 diets than shrimp fed the NC diet and the expression of peroxinectin in the gut was lower in shrimp fed the NC diet than others. The cumulative mortality of shrimp after V. parahaemolyticus challenge was significantly lower in shrimp fed the P2 diet than those fed the NC diet. After the challenge, genes expressions related to the prophenoloxidase activating system (proPO, lgbp, ppaf) were inhibited in the hepatopancreas of shrimp fed NC diet but activated in shrimp fed the P1 diet compared to those fed the PC diet. The AKP and T-AOC activities were higher in shrimp fed the P2 diet than those fed the other diets. The thickness of muscle layer of shrimp fed the P1 diet was thicker than that in the other groups, and significant stress damage happened in the midgut of the shrimp fed the NC diet. The abundance of Pseudoalteromonas, Haloferula and Ruegeria in shrimp fed the P1 diet was higher than those fed the other diets, while Vibrio in shrimp fed the P2 diet was higher than those fed the other diets. This indicated that a low fishmeal diet with dietary phosphorus level of 1.12% could improve the histology, enhance immune response, and increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria in the gut of shrimp. The low fishmeal diet with dietary phosphorus level of 1.27% could improve disease resistance and antioxidant capacity, but there was a possibility of damage to the gut histology as well as increasing abundance of Vibrio in the gut microbiota of shrimp.

Abstract
The increased nitrogen (N) input with low utilization rate in artificial N management has led to massive reactive N (Nr) flows, putting the Earth in a high-risk state. It is essential to recover and recycle Nr during or after Nr removal from wastewater to reduce N input while simultaneously mitigate Nr pollution in addressing the N stress. However, mechanisms for efficient Nr recovery during or after Nr removal remain unclear. Here, the occurrence of N risk and progress in wastewater treatment in recent years as well as challenges of the current technologies for N recovery from wastewater were reviewed. Through analyzing N conversion fluxes in biogeochemical N-cycling networks, microbial N assimilation through photosynthetic and heterotrophic microorganisms was highlighted as promising alternative for synergistic N removal and recovery in wastewater treatment. In addition, the prospects and gaps of Nr recovery from wastewater through microbial assimilation are discussed.

Abstract
The constant increment in the world's population leads to a parallel increase in the demand for food. This situation gives place the need for urgent development of alternative and sustainable resources to satisfy this nutritional requirement. Human nutrition is currently based on fisheries, which accounts for 50% of the fish production for human consumption, but also on agriculture, livestock, and aquaculture. Among them, aquaculture has been pointed out as a promising source of animal protein that can provide the population with high-quality protein food. This productive model has also gained attention due to its fast development. However, several aquaculture species require considerable amounts of fish protein to reach optimal growth rates, which represents its main drawback. Aquaculture needs to become sustainable using renewable source of nutrients with high contents of proteins to ensure properly fed animals. To achieve this goal, different approaches have been considered. In this sense, single-cell protein (SCP) products are a promising solution to replace fish protein from fishmeal. SCP flours based on microbes or algae biomass can be sustainably obtained. These microorganisms can be cultured by using residues supplied by other industries such as agriculture, food, or urban areas. Hence, the application of SCP for developing innovative fish meal offers a double solution by reducing the management of residues and by providing a sustainable source of proteins to aquaculture. However, the use of SCP as aquaculture feed also has some limitations, such as problems of digestibility, presence of toxins, or difficulty to scale-up the production process. In this work, we review the potential sources of SCP, their respective production processes, and their implementation in circular economy strategies, through the revalorization and exploitation of different residues for aquaculture feeding purposes. The data analyzed show the positive effects of SCP inclusion in diets and point to SCP meals as a sustainable feed system. However, new processes need to be exploited to improve yield. In that direction, the circular economy is a potential alternative to produce SCP at any time of the year and from various cost-free substrates, almost without a negative impact.
