Performance of the M06 family of functionals in prediction of the charge transfer transition energies of the naphthalene–TCNE and pyrene–TCNE molecular complexes

Organic Donor-Acceptor Complexes As Potential Semiconducting Materials

In this review article, the synthesis, characterization and physico-chemical properties of the organic donor-acceptor complexes are highlighted and a special emphasis has been placed on developing them as semiconducting materials. The electron-rich molecules, i. e., donors have been broadly grouped in three categories, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen heterocycles and sulphur containing aromatic donors. The reactions of these classes of the donors with the acceptors, namely tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), tetracyanobenzene (TCNB), benzoquinone, pyromellitic dianhydride and pyromellitic diimides, fullerenes, phenazine, benzothiadiazole, naphthalimide, DMAD, maleic anhydride, viologens and naphthalene diimide are described. The potential applications of the resulting DA complexes for physico-electronic purposes are also included. The theoretical investigation of many of these products with a view to rationalise their observed physico-chemical properties is also discussed.

How Photoactivation Triggers Protochlorophyllide Reduction: Computational Evidence of a Stepwise Hydride Transfer during Chlorophyll Biosynthesis

The photochemical reaction catalyzed by enzyme protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (POR), a rare example of a photoactivated enzyme, is a crucial step during chlorophyll biosynthesis and involves the fastest known biological hydride transfer. Structures of the enzyme with bound substrate protochlorophyllide (PChlide) and coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) have recently been published, opening up the possibility of using computational approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of the excited state chemistry. Herein, we propose a complete mechanism for the photochemistry between PChlide and NADPH based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations that is consistent with recent experimental data. In this multi-step mechanism, photoexcitation of PChlide leads to electron transfer from NADPH to PChlide, which in turn facilitates hydrogen atom transfer by weakening the breaking C-H bond. This work rationalizes how photoexcitation facilitates hydride transfer in POR and has more general implications for biological hydride transfer reactions.

Absorption properties of a BODIPY-curved graphene nanoflake system: A theoretical investigation

Modifications in the electronic transitions of a popular 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (boron dipyrromethene, BODIPY) dye caused by quasi-parallel stacking with corannulene (C) were studied by means of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with the CAM-B3LYP functional. The effects of the electron-withdrawing (CN) and electron-donating (NH₂) substituents at the meso (8) position in the BODIPY core and the corannulene rim position on the character, location, and oscillator strengths (f) of some transitions of complexes were also discussed. To understand better the nature of the transitions, their occupied and virtual orbitals involved into the first electronic transitions as well as the electron density difference plots between excited and ground states of the complexes were investigated. The S₀ → S₁ transitions of 8H-B/C and 8NH₂-B/C complexes have a small admixture of the charge transfer (CT) character in direction from BODIPY to corannulene (B → C). They located at 2.80 and 3.11 eV, respectively, and have f of ∼0.15. The 8CN-B/C complex with a stronger acceptor BODIPY part has the S₀ → S₁ transition with a higher degree of CT (B → C) at 2.32 eV with f = 0.08. The 8H-B/2NH₂-C complex with a stronger donor corannulene part has the S₀ → S₁ transition with an expressed CT(B → C)-character at 2.58 eV with f = 0.003, whereas the S₀ → S₂ transition acquires in a some extent the features of the LE(B → B) character. A much interesting situation exists in the case of the 8NH₂-B/2CN-C complex. Here we can find both CT (B → C) and CT (C → B) among the first five states. Besides this, different, higher in energy CT states and states delocalized on both molecules were observed.

Effects of substituents in silyl groups on the absorption, fluorescence and structural properties of 1,3,6,8-tetrasilylpyrenes

1,3,6,8-Tetrasilylpyrenes and related germyl and stannyl derivatives were synthesized, and their absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic and structural properties were elucidated. The results show that the UV-vis absorption maxima of these substances in CH2Cl2 solutions shift to longer wavelengths as the size of the alkyl groups and numbers of phenyl groups on silicon increase. Fluorescence quantum yields of tetrasilylpyrenes in cyclohexane are larger than that of pyrene, and a pentamethyldisilyl derivative has an emission efficiency of 0.79. Except in the case of the SiMe2H derivative, excimer emission was not observed in concentrated solutions of these substances. The SiMe2H and SiMe3 derivatives were shown to form CT complexes with tetracyanoethylene in CH2Cl2 solutions. The calculated energy barriers for rotation of the silyl groups about the Si-C bond increase as the steric bulk of the silyl group increases. 29Si NMR chemical shifts were found to depend on the sizes of the alkyl groups and numbers of phenyl groups. Data arising from theoretical calculations suggest that the silyl groups act as electron-donating groups, and the donating ability of the groups decreases in the order SiR3 > GeR3 > SnR3.
