Abstract
There has been little scientific effort to evaluate the associations between cigarette smoking and cessation-related constructs and exposure to traumatic events, posttraumatic stress, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms among Hispanic persons who smoke in the United States (US). Such trauma-related factors may pose unique difficulties for Hispanic persons who smoke and possess a desire to quit. As such, the present investigation sought to fill this gap in the literature and examine posttraumatic stress and probable PTSD in terms of their relations with several clinically significant smoking constructs among trauma-exposed Hispanic persons who smoke from the United States. Participants included 228 Spanish-speaking Hispanic persons who endorsed prior traumatic event exposure and smoked combustible cigarettes daily (58.3% female, Mage= 32.1 years, SD = 9.65). Results indicated that posttraumatic stress symptoms were related to increased cigarette dependence, perceived barriers for smoking cessation, and more severe problems when trying to quit with effect sizes ranging from small to moderate in adjusted models. Additionally, Hispanic persons who smoke with probable PTSD compared to those without probable PTSD showcased a statistically effect for perceived barriers for cessation (p < .008) and a severity of problems when trying to quit (p < .001). No effect was evident for cigarette dependence after alpha correction. Overall, the present study offers novel empirical evidence related to the role of posttraumatic stress symptoms and PTSD among Hispanic persons who smoke in the US. Such findings highlight the need to expand this line of research to better understand the role of posttraumatic stress and PTSD among Hispanic persons who smoke which can inform smoking cessation treatments for Hispanic persons who smoke experiencing trauma-related symptomology.

Abstract
Tobacco use remains one of the most significant preventable public health problems globally and is increasingly concentrated among vulnerable groups, including those with trauma exposure or diagnosed with PTSD. The goal of this systematic review was to update and extend previous reviews. Of the 7224 publications that met the initial criteria, 267 were included in the review. Summary topic areas include conceptual frameworks for the relation between trauma or PTSD and tobacco use; associations between trauma exposure or PTSD and tobacco use; number and type of trauma exposures and tobacco use; PTSD symptoms and tobacco use; Treatment-related studies; and the examination of causal relations. Evidence continues to indicate that individuals exposed to trauma or diagnosed with PTSD are more likely to use tobacco products, more nicotine dependent and less likely to abstain from tobacco even when provided evidence-based treatments than individuals without trauma. The most commonly cited causal association proposed was use of tobacco for self-regulation of negative affect associated with trauma. A small proportion of the studies addressed causality and mechanisms of action. Future work should incorporate methodological approaches and measures from which we can draw causal conclusions and mechanisms to support the development of viable therapeutic targets.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Childhood trauma is known to be associated with nicotine dependence, yet limited smoking outcomes have been examined and few studies have assessed associations between specific trauma subscales and smoking. Additionally, sex differences in trauma-smoking relations are understudied. This study examined associations between childhood trauma and several smoking-related outcomes in adults who smoke after overnight abstinence. AIMS AND METHODS People who smoke (N = 205) completed self-report and biochemical assessments evaluating childhood trauma, affect, nicotine dependence, smoking urges, withdrawal, and plasma cortisol and cotinine levels. Smoking outcomes were compared between those with and without a history of moderate to severe childhood trauma among the total sample and by sex. RESULTS Relative to those with no to minimal abuse, those with moderate to severe abuse had higher negative affect, withdrawal severity, and plasma cotinine levels. Exploratory analyses revealed that women were more likely than men to have urges to smoke for negative reinforcement and have higher withdrawal severity, but no interactions between abuse group and sex were observed. Examining specific trauma subscales, the moderate to severe emotional abuse group had more severe nicotine dependence, negative affect, and withdrawal compared to the no to minimal group. The moderate to severe sexual abuse group had more severe nicotine dependence and withdrawal compared to the no to minimal group. CONCLUSIONS Exposure to childhood trauma is associated with more severe nicotine dependence, negative affect, withdrawal, and higher plasma cotinine levels. Findings also indicate that different types of trauma may differentially affect smoking behaviors. IMPLICATIONS This study of adults who smoke finds that childhood trauma history may be a marker for smoking susceptibility and suggests that individuals with experiences of emotional and sexual abuse may require targeted forms of smoking cessation interventions. Moreover, findings suggest that smoking risks may differ for men and women. Findings inform public health interventions intended to reduce cigarette use in individuals with exposure to childhood trauma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Emerging evidence points to tobacco experimentation being associated with a vast array of mental disorders, particularly anxiety and depression. We aimed to assess the prevalence of tobacco experimentation, its predictive factors and its potential links with anxiety and depressive disorders among in school adolescents in a Tunisian delegation. METHODS We carried out a cross sectional study among adolescents schooling in middle and high schools in the delegation of Nfidha, Sousse, Tunisia, during the period from January to March of the 2019-2020 school year using an anonymous questionnaire self-administered to a representative sample of 1,353 randomly selected pupils. Data were collected using the Arabic versions of the Beck Depression Inventory short form (13 items) and the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED-C) and a socio-demographic questionnaire with reference to the literature. RESULTS Tobacco was experimented by (17.5 %; CI 95 %: 14.8-18.8 %) of pupils. Almost three out of four pupils (73.2 %; CI 95 %: 70.8-75.6 %) reported experiencing depressive symptoms and (65 %; CI 95 %: 62.5-67.5 %) anxiety symptoms. Pupils who exhibited depressive disorder indicators were significantly more prone to experiment with tobacco (20.2 vs. 9.9 %, p<0.001; crude OR=2.301 CI 95 %: 1.74-3.58). Similarly, the prevalence of tobacco experimentation was found to be higher among pupils who reported having experienced anxiety disorders (21.0 vs. 14.5 %, p<0.001; crude OR=1.56 CI 95 %: 1.06-2.27). Being a male pupil (AOR=5.48 95 % CI: 3.62-8.31), being be enrolled in a high school (AOR=2.86, 95 % CI: 1.92-4.26), tobacco use by father and siblings (respectively AOR=1.76, 95 % CI: 1.19-2.60; AOR=2.47, 95 % CI: 1.52-4.02) and experiencing depressive disorders (AOR=2.69, 95 % CI: 1.60-4.53) were the determinants of tobacco experimentation in the multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS Tobacco experimentation in adolescence has been shown to be significantly associated with anxiety and depression. National smoking prevention strategies should be reinforced with a focus on mental health disorders.

Abstract
Risk assessment of properties and associated population was conducted for the state of Nebraska, leveraging only open-source datasets. The flood risk framework consisted of interactions among drivers, i.e. hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and response, to assess the risks related to properties and associated populations. To quantify hazard on a county scale, we considered properties at risk of flooding based on a flood score (a higher score represents a greater chance of flooding). Exposure was quantified by considering population density at the county level. We quantified vulnerability under four categories: social, ecological, economic, and health. Response, a relatively newer component in flood risk assessment, was also quantified under three distinct categories: structural, non-structural, and emergency. Overall, we found that counties in eastern Nebraska (Sarpy, Dakota, Wayne, and Adams) have a higher risk of flooding consequences due to more exposure to vulnerable assets such as population and property. The assessment also observed that counties in eastern Nebraska are in the process of improving their flood control measures with dams, levees, and higher insurance coverage that can subdue the risks associated with flooding. The results from this study are anticipated to guide water managers and policymakers in making more effective and locally relevant policies and measures to mitigate flood risks and consequences.

Abstract
Observational studies have shown an association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and ischemic stroke (IS) but given the susceptibility to confounding it is unclear if these associations represent causal effects. Mendelian randomization (MR) facilitates causal inference that is robust to the influence of confounding. Using two sample MR, we investigated the causal effect of genetic liability to PTSD on IS risk. Ancestry-specific genetic instruments of PTSD and four quantitative sub-phenotypes of PTSD, including hyperarousal, avoidance, re-experiencing, and total symptom severity score (PCL-Total) were obtained from the Million Veteran Programme (MVP) using a threshold P value (P) of <5 × 10-7, clumping distance of 1000 kilobase (Mb) and r2 < 0.01. Genetic association estimates for IS were obtained from the MEGASTROKE consortium (Ncases = 34,217, Ncontrols = 406,111) for European ancestry individuals and from the Consortium of Minority Population Genome-Wide Association Studies of Stroke (COMPASS) (Ncases = 3734, Ncontrols = 18,317) for African ancestry individuals. We used the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) approach as the main analysis and performed MR-Egger and the weighted median methods as pleiotropy-robust sensitivity analyses. In European ancestry individuals, we found evidence of an association between genetic liability to PTSD avoidance, and PCL-Total and increased IS risk (odds ratio (OR)1.04, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 1.007-1.077, P = 0.017 for avoidance and (OR 1.02, 95% CI 1.010-1.040, P = 7.6 × 10-4 for PCL total). In African ancestry individuals, we found evidence of an association between genetically liability to PCL-Total and reduced IS risk (OR 0.95 (95% CI 0.923-0.991, P = 0.01) and hyperarousal (OR 0.83 (95% CI 0.691-0.991, P = 0.039) but no association was observed for PTSD case-control, avoidance, or re-experiencing. Similar estimates were obtained with MR sensitivity analyses. Our findings suggest that specific sub-phenotypes of PTSD, such as hyperarousal, avoidance, PCL total, may have a causal effect on people of European and African ancestry's risk of IS. This shows that the molecular mechanisms behind the relationship between IS and PTSD may be connected to symptoms of hyperarousal and avoidance. To clarify the precise biological mechanisms involved and how they may vary between populations, more research is required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light a variety of key factors that affect tobacco use, including behavioural patterns, social support and connection, and physical and mental health. What we do not know is how those motivated to quit were impacted by the pandemic. As such, understanding the unique experiences and needs of people motivated to quit smoking or vaping during the COVID-19 pandemic is critical. The aim of this study was to examine the cessation experiences of nicotine users during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN We conducted a supplementary secondary analysis of primary qualitative data, i.e., semi-structured interviews with individuals engaged in cigarette use (smoking), e-cigarette use (vaping) and dual use. SETTING British Columbia, Canada. PARTICIPANTS Relevant data were drawn from 33 participants out of the primary study's 80-participant sample pool. MEASURES Interview questions explored barriers and facilitators to quitting nicotine use. We then used conventional content analysis to identify relevant and additional emergent themes and subthemes surrounding pandemic-specific barriers and facilitators to quitting, and unique needs for cessation support in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS Pandemic-specific barriers included lifestyle limitations and poor mental health due to isolation. Facilitators to quitting during the pandemic included reduced access and opportunities to use nicotine products, as well as time for personal reflection on nicotine use behaviours. Suggestions for cessation programming included a primary focus on enhancing social support features (e.g., discussion forums, support groups), followed by increasing awareness of the benefits of quitting, and enhancing visibility of resources available to support quitting. CONCLUSIONS The findings provide directions for how cessation supports can be tailored to better meet the needs of users motivated to quit during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Background The COVID-19 pandemic is a global public health problem affecting mental health, and basic data are required for evidence-based mental health interventions. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of psychological impacts, anxiety, depression, stress, and any associated risk factors in individuals living in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods The population of this descriptive study consisted of individuals over the age of 18 living in Turkey. The data were collected between July-September 2020 using the snowball sampling method. The study was completed with 1733 participants. The data were collected using the Impact of Events Scale-Revised and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale. Statistical analyses included percentage, mean, standard deviation, a Chi-square test, a Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis and Tamhane's T2 post hoc, and Spearman's correlation. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results 45.1% had moderate or severe psychological effects; 42.7% had a moderate or severe depression, 31.7% had moderate or severe anxiety, and 28.5% had moderate or severe stress levels. Being a woman, being single, unemployment, smoking, the presence of chronic diseases, being young (<35), being a university graduate, having a household size of 5 or more, a low income, having poor health, and being underweight were significantly correlated with some psychological impact, depression, anxiety, and stress levels of people. Conclusion During the pandemic period, almost half of the respondents were found to experience some psychological impact of the pandemic and have negative moderate to severe mental health levels. Risk groups for mental health were identified.

Abstract
Tobacco smoking is a preventable cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Smoking comes in form of absorption of many compounds, among which nicotine is the main psychoactive component of tobacco and its positive and negative reinforcement effects are proposed to be the key mechanism for the initiation and maintenance of smoking. Growing evidence suggests that the cognitive enhancement effects of nicotine may also contribute to the difficulty of quitting smoking, especially in individuals with psychiatric disorders. In this review, we first introduce the beneficial effect of nicotine on cognition including attention, short-term memory and long-term memory. We next summarize the beneficial effect of nicotine on cognition under pathological conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Schizophrenia, Stress-induced Anxiety, Depression, and drug-induced memory impairment. The possible mechanism underlying nicotine's effect is also explored. Finally, nicotine's detrimental effect on cognition is discussed, including in the prenatal and adolescent periods, and high-dose nicotine- and withdrawal-induced memory impairment is emphasized. Therefore, nicotine serves as both a friend and foe. Nicotine-derived compounds could be a promising strategy to alleviate neurological disease-associated cognitive deficit, however, due to nicotine's detrimental effect, continued educational programs and public awareness campaigns are needed to reduce tobacco use among pregnant women and smoking should be quitted even if it is e-cigarette, especially for the adolescents.

Abstract
Aim A systematic meta-review was conducted to examine (1) the broad range of negative and positive individual and interpersonal changes following adult sexual violence, as well as (2) the risk/protective factors at multiple levels of the social ecology (e.g., individual, assault, and micro/meso/exo/macro/chronosystem factors)-influencing the impact of sexual violence. Methods Searches of Web of Science, Pubmed, and ProQuest resulted in inclusion of 46 systematic reviews or meta-analyses. Review findings were extracted for summary and a deductive thematic analysis was conducted. Results Experiencing sexual violence is associated with many negative individual and sexual difficulties as well as revictimization risk. Only a limited number of reviews reported on interpersonal and positive changes. Factors at multiple levels of the social ecology play a role in the intensity of these changes. Reviews including macrolevel factors were non-existent, however. Conclusion Reviews on sexual violence are fragmented in nature. Although the use of an ecological approach is often lacking, adopting such a perspective in research is necessary for a fuller understanding of the multiple influences on survivor outcomes. Future research should evaluate the occurrence of social and positive changes following sexual violence, as well as the role of macrolevel factors in influencing post-assault outcomes.

Abstract
Background Several studies have linked traumatic injury and cardiovascular disease. However, few studies have investigated the associations between traumatic injury and cardiovascular disease subtypes. We aimed to prospectively examine the association between traumatic injury and the risk of incident myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke. Methods This study was based on a prospective cohort study that included 13,973 patients who had been hospitalized for traumatic injuries from 1980 to 2020. We randomly selected 4 uninjured participants from the cohort study for each patient as controls matched by age ( ± 3 years) and sex. All participants were free of MI and stroke at enrollment. Cox regression was used to examine the association between traumatic injury and incident MI and stroke. Results During a median follow-up period of 13.5 years, 1032 cases of MI and 4068 cases of stroke were recorded. After multivariable adjustment, relative to controls, patients with severe injury had the highest hazard ratio (HR) for MI (HR = 1.93; 95% CI: 1.26-2.96) and stroke (HR = 1.60; 95% CI: 1.25-2.05). The HRs of MI and stroke were 0.97 (0.81-1.17) and 1.11 (1.02-1.21) for patients with mild injury and 1.28 (0.97-1.69) and 1.22 (1.06 to 1.41) for patients with moderate injury. Additionally, patients with older age at injury and chest injury had a higher HR for MI and stroke (p-interaction < 0.05). Conclusions Traumatic injury appears to be associated with an increased risk of incident MI and stroke. Therefore, early screening and prevention of MI and stroke following a traumatic injury are needed.

Abstract
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are associated with poor health yet, we know little about how distinct patterns of ACE types are associated with cardiovascular (cardiovascular (CVD)) risk factors. The current study 1) examined associations of latent ACE classes with modifiable CVD risk factors including high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, high triglycerides, physical inactivity, overweight/obesity, and lifetime depression; and 2) examined the impact of socioeconomic status-related (SES) factors on these relationships. Using a cross-sectional analysis of the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (n = 36,309) data, four latent classes of ACEs were previously identified: 1) low adversity, 2) primarily household dysfunction, 3) primarily maltreatment, and 4) multiple adversity types. We examined the association of these classes with CVD risk factors in adulthood and subsequently, the same model accounting for SES-related factors. Tobacco smoking, overweight/obesity, and lifetime depression were each associated with higher odds of being in classes 2, 3, and 4 than class 1, respectively. These relationships held after adjusting for SES-related factors. Class 4 was associated with the most CVD risk factors, including high triglycerides and high cholesterol after controlling for SES-related factors. The consistent associations between tobacco smoking, overweight/obesity, and lifetime depression with each adverse ACE profile, even after controlling for SES, suggest behavioural CVD prevention programs should target these CVD risk factors simultaneously.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION While nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a frontline tobacco treatment that doubles smoking quit rates, only about 18% of Black adults who smoke cigarettes report lifetime use of NRT. A promising approach for increasing NRT use is in-session (in-vivo) NRT sampling within cessation interventions. The present pilot study examined the effectiveness of an in-vivo NRT sampling intervention within a single-session, culturally-targeted motivational intervention trial in Black adults who smoke cigarettes. METHODS Non-treatment-seeking disadvantaged Black adults (N = 60) were offered the choice to sample nicotine lozenge, patch, or both in-session with the counselor present. Regardless of their choice, they were offered a one-week starter kit of both products. Data were analyzed at baseline and 1-month follow-up. Primary outcomes were 1) differences in motivation to quit smoking among NRT samplers versus non-samplers, 2) in-vivo NRT sampling preferences, and 3) in-vivo sampling's association with NRT use and improved smoking outcomes at follow up. RESULTS Almost all participants accepted a take-home NRT starter kit, and approximately half of those offered in-vivo sampling agreed to sample. Participants preferred sampling lozenges in session (75.8% lozenge only vs. 12.1% nicotine patch only or 12.1% both; p < .001). Motivation to quit smoking was not related to likelihood of in-vivo NRT sampling (p > .05). At 1-month follow-up, in-vivo samplers were more likely to use NRT (94% vs. 35%, respectively; p < .001) and report a quit attempt (81.8% vs. 53.9%, p < .05) compared to non-samplers. CONCLUSION In-vivo NRT sampling is a promising strategy to improve NRT uptake among Black adults who smoke cigarettes, regardless of motivation to quit smoking.

Abstract
With a direct link between traumatic stress and poor smoking outcomes established, there is a clinically important need to identify underlying, targetable mechanisms that maintain these relations. The present study employed a parallel mediation model to assess the competing explanatory significance of four distinct facets of depression and anxiety (general anxiety, anxious arousal, general depression, and anhedonic depression) in the relation between traumatic load and perceived barriers for quitting smoking, severity of psychosomatic problems experienced when attempting to quit smoking in the past, and negative reinforcement expectancies related to smoking among 98 adult trauma-exposed daily smokers (Mage = 44.64, SD = 10.66). Results showed that only general anxiety symptoms, when controlling for the competing facets of depression and anxiety, had a statistically significant indirect effect on the relation between traumatic load and all smoking processes, such that general anxiety symptoms significantly, indirectly influenced the relation between traumatic load and barriers for smoking cessation (ab = 0.95, 95% CI [0.163, 0.2.14]), smoking quit problems (ab = 0.07, 95% CI [0.009, 0.165]), and negative reinforcement smoking expectancies (ab = 0.16, 95% CI [0.025, 0.399]). Anxious arousal demonstrated an indirect effect for trauma load on only negative reinforcement smoking expectancies (ab = -0.15, 95% CI [-0.345, -0.023]). The current findings highlight the potential importance of general anxiety symptoms as a targetable mechanism for smoking cessation treatments for trauma-exposed smokers.

Abstract
Tobacco use is recognised as a serious, worldwide public health concern. Smoking cessation is of great interest across a wide range of medical specialities, including family medicine. However, smoking cessation among people with mental illness (PWMI) has attracted scant attention in South African literature. This is despite PWMI suffering disproportionately from the damages of tobacco. The harms of smoking are not limited to physical health but extend to mental health. This article discusses the need for multifaceted smoking cessation treatments for PWMI in the public health sector, taking into consideration the prevalence and unique drivers of smoking in this population. A brief overview of patterns of tobacco use, associated harms and smoking cessation interventions in South Africa is given; all within the context of mental illness.

Abstract
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is complex neuropsychiatric disorder triggered by a traumatic event and characterized by the symptoms that represent large burden to patients, as well as to society. Lipidomic approach can be applied as a useful tool for discovery of novel diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic lipid biomarkers of various disorders, whose etiology is complex and still unknown, including PTSD. Since changes in the levels of lipid metabolites might indicate impairments in various metabolic pathways and cellular processes, the aim of this lipidomic study was to determine altered levels of lipid compounds in PTSD. The study enrolled 235 male patients with combat PTSD and 241 healthy male control subjects. Targeted lipidomic analysis of plasma samples was conducted using reverse-phase liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Lipids that have been analyzed belong to the group of ceramides, cholesterol esters, diacylglycerols, lysophosphatidylcholines, lysophosphatidylethanolamines, phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidylethanolamines, sphingomyelins and triglycerides. The levels of fifteen lipid compounds were found to be significantly different between PTSD patients and healthy control subjects, including four phosphatidylcholines, two phosphatidylethanolamines, five sphingomyelins, two cholesterol esters and two ceramides. The lipid metabolites whose levels significantly differed between patients with PTSD and control subjects are associated with various biological processes, including impairments of membrane integrity and function, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation and oxidative stress. As these processes might be associated with development and progression of PTSD, altered lipid compounds represent potential biomarkers that could facilitate the diagnosis of PTSD, prediction of the disease, as well as identification of novel treatment approaches in PTSD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined the effects of smoking habit change on the risk of depression using the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort database of Korea. METHODS This nationwide population-based cohort study included 88,931 men aged 40 years or older. The participants were divided into baseline heavy (≥20 cigarettes/day), moderate (10-19 cigarettes/day), and light (<10 cigarettes/day) smokers, quitters, and never smokers. Smokers were then categorized as continual smokers, reducers, quitters, and non-smokers based on the two-year change in smoking status between the first and second health examinations. The participants were followed from the index date to 2013 to assess depression status. Cox proportional models were used to examine the effects of smoking habit change on the risk of depression. RESULTS After a median 7.7 years of follow-up, 2,833 depression cases were identified. Never smokers and long-term quitters had a lower risk of depression than heavy continual smokers (hazard ratio, HR 0.817; 95% CI, confidence interval 0.689-0.967 and HR: 0.691; 95% CI: 0.559-0.853, respectively). Short-term quitters and reducers had a lower risk of depression, but it was not significant. The influence of smoking on depression was prominent among men in their 50 s (HR: 0.585; 95% CI: 0.419-0.820 in long-term quitters, HR:.0.738; 95% CI: 0.570-0.954 in never smokers). LIMITATIONS The information about smoking habits was based on self-reported questionnaires. This study examined only men because the smoking rate among women in Korea is very low. CONCLUSIONS This population-based study found that never smokers and long-term quitters have lower risk of depression. The risk of depression decreased when the amount of smoking decreased, but the difference was not statistically significant. Furthermore, more attention should be paid to middle-aged men when formulating smoking cessation policies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in individuals who are further removed from injury (up to 3 years) and to identify injury-specific characteristics that are associated with an increased risk for persistent PTSD symptoms. DESIGN Cross-sectional, retrospective cohort. SETTING Level I trauma center. PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS Two hundred forty-three patients operatively treated for orthopaedic trauma between March 2017 through June 2018. INTERVENTION Orthopaedic trauma requiring operative intervention. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS The primary outcome was score on the PTSD Checklist for the DSM-5 (PCL-5) survey. A score of 31 or higher was considered concerning for PTSD. RESULTS Forty-nine of 239 respondents (20.5%) scored positive for PTSD. Multivariate analysis demonstrated an increased risk of PTSD for patients with a history of smoking and those who required delayed reoperation (greater than 90 days postoperative). White race and low-energy mechanisms of injury were associated with decreased risk of PTSD. Fracture locations were not associated with a higher likelihood of PTSD. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of PTSD symptoms in patients up to 3 years after surgery remains higher than the estimated prevalence of PTSD in the general US population. It is similar to previously documented rates of PTSD for patients less than 1 year after injury. Long-term complication requiring reoperation was associated with an increased risk of persistent PTSD symptoms. Orthopaedic providers should be mindful of PTSD symptoms not only in the immediate postoperative period but throughout the treatment course particularly for those with identified PTSD risk factors. Abstract
While inflammatory markers have been implicated in the link between PTSD and poor health outcomes, there is a paucity of research investigating C-reactive protein (CRP) and psychotherapy treatment response for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study utilized a large, well-characterized sample of veterans and service members (N = 493) engaged in intensive psychotherapy to investigate the associations between CRP, trauma exposure, related variables, and PTSD and depression, as well as investigating if CRP was associated with PTSD psychotherapy treatment response. Bivariate correlation results indicate that CRP was significantly associated with BMI (r = 0.48) and severity of experiences of childhood physical and sexual abuse (r = 0.14 and 0.15, respectively) and was not significantly associated with baseline PTSD total symptom severity, PTSD symptom clusters, or depression symptom severity (rs ranging from -0.03 to 0.04). In multivariate regression models investigating if CRP and related variables were associated with PTSD baseline symptom severity, CRP was not a significant predictor (β = -0.03). Hierarchical linear modeling did not identify CRP as a significant predictor of PTSD psychotherapy outcome. Given that findings indicate that CRP was broadly elevated in this treatment seeking sample but not associated with PTSD and depression symptom severity, results suggest CRP may not be a specific biomarker for PTSD or depression but may be elevated in psychiatric disease more generally.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Psychiatric disorders increase risk for contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but we know little about relationships between psychiatric symptoms and COVID-19 risky and protective behaviors. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with increased propensity to engage in risky behaviors, but may also be associated with increased COVID-19 protective behaviors due to increased threat sensitivity and social isolation. METHOD We examined associations of PTSD symptoms with COVID-19-related protective and risky behaviors using data from a cross-sectional online United States study among 845 US adults in August through September 2020. PTSD symptoms (PTSD Checklist-5), sociodemographics, COVID-19-related experiences and vulnerabilities, and past 30-day engagement in 10 protective and eight risky behaviors for COVID-19 were assessed via self-report. We examined associations between PTSD symptoms and COVID-19 protective and risky behaviors with linear regressions, adjusting for covariates. RESULTS Probable PTSD and higher PTSD symptom severity were associated with greater engagement in protective behaviors, but also greater engagement in risky behaviors. Associations were only slightly attenuated by adjustment for COVID-19 exposures and perceived likelihood and severity of COVID-19. Associations varied by PTSD clusters: intrusions and arousal were associated with both more protective and more risky behaviors, whereas negative cognitions or mood was associated only with more risky, and avoidance only with more protective, behaviors. CONCLUSION Higher PTSD symptoms were associated with engagement in more protective but also more risky behaviors for COVID-19. Abstract
Compensatory health beliefs are barriers to healthy behavior. In an effort to understand how the prevalence of these beliefs can be reduced in individuals, 376 valid questionnaires were collected from combat troops in Taiwan. The collected data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. It was found that positive attitudes towards smoking cessation had significant negative effects on compensatory health beliefs, while negative attitudes towards smoking cessation significantly enhanced the level of compensatory health beliefs. The motivation for smoking cessation was also found to reinforce the negative effect of positive attitudes towards compensatory health beliefs, while it did not have any significant effect on the relationship between negative attitudes and compensatory health beliefs. Three subconstructs of compensatory health beliefs (exercise, eating habits, and amount of smoking) were found to have simultaneous effects for military personnel. Finally, this study explored the causes of the above-mentioned phenomena, and measures that could reduce the prevalence of compensatory health beliefs were suggested.

Abstract
African Americans are more likely to die from tobacco-related diseases and less likely to quit smoking than their white counterparts. Evidence of greater prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among African Americans underscores the importance of studying the effects of traumatic event exposure on tobacco dependence treatment outcomes in this group. In this secondary analysis of data from a previously completed randomized control trial, we examined the effects of traumatic event exposure (e.g., serious accident) on tobacco dependence treatment outcomes, as well its moderating effects on the effectiveness of an adapted smoking cessation treatment, in a sample (n = 169) of African American smokers in New York City. Traumatic event exposure did not have a significant impact on tobacco treatment outcomes and did not moderate the relationship between treatment type and outcomes in this sample. While results may be driven by unique sample characteristics, they may also indicate that an average level of traumatic event exposure does not significantly impact tobacco treatment outcomes among African Americans. Future research should examine the effects of higher levels of traumatic event exposure on treatment outcomes, as well as investigating the factors underlying trauma-exposed individuals' difficulties with reducing/quitting smoking in a larger, more diverse African American sample.

Abstract
Stressful life events have been linked to declining health, and inflammation has been proposed as a physiological mechanism that might explain this association. Using 828 participants from the Dunedin Longitudinal Study, we tested whether people who experienced more stressful life events during adulthood would show elevated systemic inflammation when followed up in midlife, at age 45. We studied three inflammatory biomarkers: C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and a newer biomarker, soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR), which is thought to index systemic chronic inflammation. Stressful life events were not associated with CRP or IL-6. However, people who experienced more stressful life events from age 38 to 44 had elevated suPAR at age 45, and had significantly greater increases in suPAR from baseline to follow-up across the same period. When examining stressful life events across the lifespan, both adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and adult stressful life events were independently associated with suPAR at age 45. ACEs moderated the association of adult stressful life events and suPAR at age 45-children with more ACEs showed higher suPAR levels after experiencing stressful life events as adults. The results suggest systemic chronic inflammation is one physiological mechanism that could link stressful life events and health, and support the use of suPAR as a useful biomarker for such research.

BACKGROUND Improvement in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with better health behavior such as better medication adherence and greater use of nutrition and weight loss programs. However, it is not known if reducing PTSD severity is associated with smoking cessation, a poor health behavior common in patients with PTSD. METHODS Veterans Health Affairs (VHA) medical record data (2008 to 2015) were used to identify patients with PTSD diagnosed in specialty care. Clinically meaningful PTSD improvement, was defined as ≥20 point PTSD Checklist (PCL) decrease from the first PCL ≥ 50 and the last available PCL within 12 months and at least 8 weeks later. The association between clinically meaningful PTSD improvement and smoking cessation within 2-years after baseline among 449 smokers was estimated in Cox proportional hazard models. Entropy balancing controlled for confounding. RESULTS On average, patients were 39.4 (SD=12.9) years of age, 86.6% were male and 71.5% were white. We observed clinically meaningful PTSD improvement in 19.8% of participants. Overall, 19.4% quit smoking in year 1 and 16.6% in year 2. More patients with vs. without clinically meaningful PTSD improvement stopped smoking (n=36, cumulative incidence=40.5% vs. 111, cumulative incidence=30.8%; respectively). After controlling for confounding, patients with vs. without clinically meaningful PTSD improvement were more likely to stop smoking within 2-years (HR=1.57; 95%CI:1.04-2.36). CONCLUSIONS Patients with clinically meaningful PTSD improvement were significantly more likely to stop smoking. Further research should determine if targeted interventions are needed or whether improvement in PTSD symptoms is sufficient to enable smoking cessation. IMPLICATIONS Patients with PTSD are more likely to develop chronic health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Poor health behaviors, including smoking, partly explain the risk for chronic disease in this patient population. Our results demonstrate that clinically meaningful PTSD improvement is followed by greater likelihood of smoking cessation. Thus, PTSD treatment may enable healthier behaviors and reduce risk for smoking related disease.

Abstract
Tobacco smoking might be impacted by various influences, including psychological, socio-cultural, and economic factors. A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in Syrian Arab Republic from March to April 2019 using a web-based questionnaire. The survey aimed at assessing tobacco use (shisha and cigarettes) as well as examining the association between current tobacco use and various sociodemographic and war-related factors. The sample comprised 978 participants (251 males: 727 females) and had a mean age of 24.7 years (SD: 7.60). Most participants were single (n = 825, 84.4%), reside in Damascus and Rif-Dimashq (n = 579, 59.2%), and had a college/university education (n = 911, 93.1%). Concerning smoking, a total of 371 participants (37.9%) were identified to be current tobacco smokers, of whom 211, 84, 76 were exclusive shisha smokers, exclusive cigarette smokers, and dual smokers, respectively. The prevalence of cigarette smoking (exclusive and dual) among males and females was found to be 34.7%, and 10.0%, respectively. On the other hand, the prevalence of shisha smoking (exclusive and dual) among males and females was around 34.3% and 27.6%, respectively. Additionally, various factors have predicted a higher likelihood of cigarette smoking including male gender (AOR = 4.152; 95% CI: 2.842-6.064; p<0.001), and losing someone due to the war (AOR = 1.487; 95% CI: 1.028-2.151; p = 0.035), while unemployed individuals were found to have lower odds of being cigarette smokers (AOR = 0.634; 95% CI: 0.429-0.937; p = 0.022). Concerning shisha smoking, married (AOR = 0.622; 95% CI: 0.402-0.963; p = 0.033), and unemployed individuals (AOR = 0.679; 95% CI: 0.503-0.916; p = 0.011) were found to have lower odds of shisha smoking. Amid the tobacco epidemic in the region, rates of tobacco use in Syria are still worrying. The Syrian armed conflicts may possess a double-edged effect on smoking, and tobacco users who adopt smoking to cope with various stressors should be targeted with well-structured health education, along with appropriate psychological services.

Abstract
Stroke is a major cause of mortality and disability globally that has multiple risk factors. A risk factor that has recently gained more attention is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Literature searches were carried out for updated PTSD information and for the relationship between PTSD and stroke. The review was divided into two sections, one exploring PTSD as an independent risk factor for stroke, with a second concentrating on PTSD's influence on stroke risk factors. The study presents accumulating evidence that shows traumatic stress predicts stroke and is also linked to many major stroke risk factors. The review contributes knowledge to stroke aetiology and acts as a reference for understanding the relationship between PTSD and stroke. The information presented indicates that screening and identification of traumatic experience would be beneficial for directing stroke patients to appropriate psychological and lifestyle interventions. In doing so, the burden of stroke may be reduced worldwide.

Abstract
Smoking during pregnancy is a serious public health concern that poses risks for maternal and infant health. Considering the rise of electronic cigarette use in recent years, there is also growing concern about electronic cigarette use during pregnancy. Recent research has begun to explore correlates of electronic cigarette use among pregnant women. While research has revealed a strong connection between incarceration and smoking, scholars have yet to examine the connection between a woman's exposure to incarceration in the year prior to birth - either personally or vicariously through her husband or partner - and prenatal electronic cigarette use. The current study uses data from 74,554 recent mothers from the 2016-2018 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. Logistic regression and multinomial logistic regression models were used to assess the association between incarceration exposure and electronic cigarette use. The findings indicate a robust association between incarceration exposure and electronic cigarette use during pregnancy. Specifically, analyses demonstrate that incarceration-exposed women were approximately 2.7 times (AOR = 2.699, 95% CI = 1.939, 3.755) as likely to use electronic cigarettes after adjusting for a host of demographic, economic, health, and pregnancy related characteristics. Additional analyses reveal this association remains after accounting for conventional cigarette use during pregnancy. Considering the potential harmful health ramifications for electronic cigarette use during pregnancy, these findings suggest a need for interventions targeting electronic cigarette use among incarceration-exposed populations and point to electronic cigarette use among pregnant women in particular as an important area of focus for both criminal justice and public health practitioners.

Abstract
Individuals with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) smoke cigarettes at much higher prevalences than the general population. Less is known about PTSD and other smoking behaviors (e.g., smoking quantity and frequency) or about smoking among individuals who experience trauma. OBJECTIVE To examine differences in cigarette smoking behaviors among adults in the United States (a) with no exposure to trauma or PTSD, (b) with trauma but no PTSD, and (c) with PTSD. METHODS Data came from Wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-II (NESARC-II, 2004-2005) and included demographics, PTSD diagnoses, traumatic events, and smoking behaviors. Odds ratios and group differences in smoking prevalence and behaviors based on PTSD diagnoses and exposure to traumatic experiences were calculated. RESULTS Traumatic events and PTSD diagnoses were both associated with greater smoking prevalences than persons without trauma or PTSD. Individuals with PTSD who smoke were more likely to report daily smoking than those without PTSD who smoke (Cohen's d = 0.19). Cigarette users with either trauma or PTSD smoked more cigarettes per day than cigarette users without trauma or PTSD (Cohen's d = 0.35). US adults with trauma exposure or PTSD have higher smoking prevalences and more intense smoking behaviors than those without PTSD or trauma. CONCLUSION Trauma or PTSD may each serve as a clinical indicator of increased risk of cigarette smoking-related health problems and prompt the implementation of targeted interventions to reduce the harms of smoking. Abstract
Objective: A positive association between mental health conditions and poor asthma control has been documented in the World Trade Center-exposed population. Whether factors such as medication adherence mediate this association is unknown.Methods: The study population was drawn from adult participants of the World Trade Center Health Registry Cohort who self-reported as asthmatic after the disaster and who were currently prescribed a long-term control medication (LTCM). Multivariable linear regression was used to estimate the associations between mental health condition (PTSD, depression, or anxiety) and continuous adherence and Asthma Control Test (ACT) scores.Results: In the study sample of 1,293, 49% were not adherent to their LTCM and two thirds reported poorly or very poorly controlled asthma. Presence of any mental health condition was associated with a 2-point decline in ACT and half a point decrease in adherence scores. However, in the multivariable model, better adherence was statistically significantly associated with slightly worse control.Conclusions: The total effect of mental health on asthma control was opposite in sign from the product of the paths between mental health and adherence and adherence and asthma control; we therefore found no evidence to support the hypothesis that adherence mediated the negative association between poor mental health and adequate asthma control. More research is needed to understand the complex causal mechanisms that underlie the association between mental and respiratory health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are known to smoke cigarettes at elevated levels in comparison to both veterans without PTSD and civilians. This study aims to elucidate how cigarette smoking and PTSD symptoms interact over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study examined the directionality and strength of the relationship between average daily cigarette smoking and PTSD symptom severity across three (T1-T3) time points in a large cohort (N = 851) of male and female Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn returning veterans who were either current or former smokers at T1 (mean age = 37.56; standard deviation = 10.10). We used cross-lagged panel analyses to evaluate their temporal relations. RESULTS The analyses indicated that PTSD symptom severity at T1 significantly predicted cigarette smoking at T2, and this predictive association was maintained from T2 to T3. Conversely, smoking at T1 and T2 did not predict PTSD symptom severity at T2 and T3, respectively. Although effect sizes were small, PTSD symptom severity was cross-sectionally related to smoking at T1 and T2, but not T3. In addition, when analyses were examined by gender, the same results were found except these associations were stronger for women than for men cross-sectionally. CONCLUSION Our findings provide some evidence of a longitudinal association between PTSD symptom severity and tobacco use and highlight potential targets of intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Compared to smokers without posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSD), smokers with PTSD smoke more heavily and are less successful in quitting smoking. However, limited research has examined the cognitive pathways underlying this heightened comorbidity. The current study is the first to simultaneously model the cross-sectional and lagged relationships between trauma-related cognitions and cigarette smoking, as well as between trauma-related cognitions and PTSD severity, in smokers with comorbid PTSD receiving treatment. METHOD Participants (n = 142) were seeking treatment for smoking cessation and PTSD as part of a randomized controlled trial of varenicline and smoking cessation counseling with or without adjunctive Prolonged Exposure (varenicline + PE vs. varenicline only) (Foa et al., 2017). Data were available for both baseline and end-of-treatment assessments of trauma cognitions severity of cigarette smoking and PTSD symptoms. We conducted both cross-sectional and lagged analysis to simultaneously examine the bidirectional relationship from trauma cognitions and 1) cigarette smoking and 2) PTSD symptoms. RESULTS Trauma cognitions (specifically, negative beliefs about the self and the world) were significantly associated with cigarette/day at the end of treatment for participants who received varenicline only. However, baseline trauma cognitions did not predict post-treatment cigarettes/day. Baseline trauma cognitions (specifically negative beliefs about the self and world) were associated with PTSD severity at both baseline and end of treatment; furthermore, these negative cognitions at baseline positively and prospectively predicted end-of-treatment PTSD severity, but not vice versa. Wald tests revealed that there were no treatment effects on these cross-lagged relationships. Conclusions These findings provide novel empirical support for the importance of addressing trauma-related cognitions in the smoking cessation treatment efforts for patients with comorbid PTSD and cigarette smoking.

Abstract
Traumatic stress and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are overrepresented in urban African American communities, and associated with health risk behaviors such as tobacco use. Support and resources provided by churches may reduce trauma-related health risks. In the current study, we assessed weekly church attendance as a moderator of relations between (a) traumatic event exposure and probable PTSD, and (b) probable PTSD and tobacco use. Data were drawn from a health surveillance study conducted in seven churches located in Chicago's West Side. Participants (N = 1015) were adults from churches as well as the surrounding community. Trauma exposure was reported by 62% of participants, with 25% of those who experienced trauma reporting probable PTSD. Overall, more than one-third of participants (37.2%) reported current tobacco use. As compared with non-weekly church attendance, weekly church attendance was associated with a lower likelihood of PTSD (odds ratio [OR] = 0.41; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.26-0.62; p < .0001) and lower tobacco use overall (OR = 0.22; 95% CI = 0.16-0.30; p < .0001), but did not moderate the effect of trauma exposure on risk of PTSD, or the effect of PTSD on tobacco use. Findings support church attendance as a potential buffer of trauma-related stress.

Abstract
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with higher levels of alcohol use among returning veterans. Persistent PTSD symptoms can predict alcohol use over the span of hours, days, weeks, and months; however, knowledge of the strength of these associations beyond 1 year remains limited. In this study, we examined the 6-year course of co-occurring PTSD and alcohol use to explicate the directional and possible enduring effects of PTSD on alcohol use severity over time. Our study included 1,649 returning veterans (M age = 37.49; SD = 9.88) who completed 4 waves of data collection between 2010 and 2016. We used parallel process modeling to evaluate temporal associations between PTSD symptoms and alcohol use severity across 4 (T1-T4) waves of data collection. PTSD and alcohol use both decreased significantly between T1 and T4 and in tandem with one another. That is, decreases in one were associated with decreases in the other. Further, individuals with higher levels of PTSD symptom severity at T1 reported accelerated rates of change regarding PTSD symptoms and alcohol use over time. Conversely, baseline alcohol use severity did not predict the rate of change in PTSD symptom severity. Our findings provide evidence of a prospective association between PTSD symptoms and alcohol use and highlight the potential for reciprocal associations between them over the span of years. Importantly, our demonstration of the natural course of co-occurring PTSD symptoms and alcohol use suggests further trauma-focused and combined intervention strategies are needed to disrupt this enduring and reciprocal pattern among returning veterans. Abstract
Objective: Approaches for effectively treating smoking in those with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and with major depressive disorder (MDD) could be improved by identifying motivational processes underlying their tobacco dependence. The goal of this study was to identify the motivational processes influencing smoking dependence among smokers with PTSD and with MDD relative to non-diagnosed controls. Methods: Participants were United States (US) veterans who smoked daily (N = 162) and met DSM-IV criteria for either PTSD (n = 52), MDD (n = 52), or no current psychiatric disorder (controls; n = 58). Smoking dependence motives were assessed via the Brief Wisconsin Inventory for Smoking Dependence Motives (Brief WISDM). The 11 Brief WISDM subscales are categorized into two major factors: Primary Dependence Motives and Secondary Dependence Motives. Results: Smokers with PTSD scored higher than non-diagnosed controls on the following Primary Dependence Motives subscales: Automaticity, Craving, and Tolerance (all p-values <.05). Smokers with PTSD, relative to controls, also scored higher on the overall Secondary Dependence Motives subscale, and on five of the seven Secondary Dependence Motives subscales: Cue Exposure/Associative Processes, Affective Enhancement, Affiliative Attachment, Cognitive Enhancement, and Weight Control (all p-values < .05). Smokers with MDD scored significantly higher than controls on one Primary Dependence Motives subscale: Craving and on four of seven Secondary Dependence Motives subscales: Affective Enhancement, Affiliative Attachment, Cognitive Enhancement, and Weight Control (all p-values <.05). Finally, exploratory analyses directly contrasting the PTSD group with the MDD group showed that smokers with PTSD were higher than those with MDD in the overall Secondary Dependence Motives subscale and one of the seven Secondary Dependence Motives subscales: Cue Exposure/Associative Processes (all p-values < .05). Conclusions: Results suggest that both Primary Dependence Motives and Secondary Dependence Motives play a meaningful role in motivation to use tobacco in smokers with PTSD; smoking dependence in those with MDD may be primarily influenced by Secondary Dependence Motives.

Abstract
The goal of this retrospective cohort study was to determine whether stressors related to military service, determined by a diagnosis of chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) or receiving a Purple Heart (PH), are associated with an increased risk of vascular risk factors and disease, which are of great concern for veterans, who constitute a significant portion of the aging US population. The Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 16 administrative database was searched for individuals 65 years or older between October 1, 1997 to September 30, 1999 who either received a PH but did not have cPTSD (PH+/cPTSD-; n = 1499), had cPTSD without a PH (PH-/cPTSD+; n = 3593), had neither (PH-/cPTSD-; n = 5010), or had both (PH+/cPTSD+; n = 153). In comparison to the control group (PH-/cPTSD-), the PH+/cPTSD- group had increased odds ratios for incidence and prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. The PH-/cPTSD+ group had increased odds ratios for prevalence of diabetes mellitus and for the incidence and prevalence of hyperlipidemia. The PH-/cPTSD+ and PH+/cPTSD- groups were associated with ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease, but not independently of the other risk factors. The PH+/cPTSD+ group was associated only with an increase in the incidence and prevalence of hyperlipidemia, though this group's much smaller sample size may limit the reliability of this finding. We conclude that certain physical and psychological stressors related to military service are associated with a greater incidence of several vascular risk factors in veterans aged 65 years or older, which in turn are associated with greater rates of ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rates of smoking and related health consequences are higher for women veterans as compared with their civilian counterparts, and trauma is a known risk factor associated with smoking. Military sexual trauma is prevalent among women veterans and associated with deleterious health outcomes, including tobacco use. However, research has not examined variables that may explain this association. The purpose of the present study was to examine the association between deployment sexual trauma (DST; military sexual trauma that occurs during deployment) and nicotine dependence, and whether perceived stress is a potential explanatory variable (i.e., mediator) in this relationship. METHODS Cross-sectional associations and Hayes mediation models were examined using baseline interview data from the Survey of Experiences of Returning Veterans sample (352 recently returned women veterans). RESULTS DST was associated with postdeployment nicotine dependence and greater perceived stress. Further, perceived stress was a significant mediator between DST and binary nicotine dependence (indirect effect [standard error] of DST on nicotine dependence through perceived stress, 0.04 [0.01]; 95% confidence interval, 0.01-0.07; odds ratio, 1.04; p < .01) when controlling for education. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that perceived stress may be a clinical target for decreasing nicotine dependence among women veterans who have experienced DST.

Abstract
AbstractSmoking is reported to be associated with depression and anxiety. The present study (a) examines these associations taking comorbidity into account, (b) investigates possible confounders, (c) examines how former smokers compared to current and never-smokers in terms of anxiety and depression, and if anxiety and depression decline by time since cessation. Participants (66%) aged 20–89 years in a population-based health survey (N = 60,814) were screened employing the HADS. (a) The association with smoking was strongest in comorbid anxiety depression, followed by anxiety, and only marginal in depression. Associations were stronger in females and younger participants. (b) Variables partly accounting for the association comprised somatic symptoms, socio-demographics, alcohol problems, and low physical activity. (c) Anxiety and depression were most common in current smokers, followed by quitters, and then never-smokers. No decline in anxiety or depression was found with time since cessation. Previous studies of associations between depression and smoking might have overestimated the association when ignoring comorbid anxiety.

Abstract
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a leading psychiatric disorder that mainly affects military and veteran populations but can occur in anyone affected by trauma. PTSD treatment remains difficult for physicians because most patients with PTSD do not respond to current pharmacological treatment. Psychotherapy is effective, but time consuming and expensive. Substance use disorder is often concurrent with PTSD, which leads to a significant challenge for PTSD treatment. Cannabis has recently received widespread attention for the potential to help many patient populations. Cannabis has been reported as a coping tool for patients with PTSD and preliminary legalization data indicate Cannabis use may reduce the use of more harmful drugs, such as opioids. Rigorous clinical studies of Cannabis could establish whether Cannabis-based medicines can be integrated into treatment regimens for both PTSD and substance use disorder patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Numerous researchers have suggested that certain coping styles (e.g., maladaptive cognitive coping strategies) interfere with recovery from traumatic experiences and contribute to the onset/maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Further, given that individuals with PTSD have a high rate of smoking (e.g., Mahaffey et al., 2016) and that maladaptive coping strategies in general are associated with lower smoking quit rates, it is possible that use of maladaptive cognitive coping strategies are particularly problematic for the recovery of smokers with PTSD. The present study examined whether specific cognitive coping strategies are associated with poorer outcome among smokers with PTSD following an integrated treatment for both disorders. METHOD Patients with chronic PTSD and nicotine dependence (N = 142) received up to 12 sessions of smoking cessation counseling combined with varenicline or integrated prolonged exposure therapy and cessation counseling combined with varenicline. We hypothesized that greater maladaptive, and lower adaptive, cognitive coping strategies at baseline would moderate degree of improvement in smoking and PTSD outcomes through to follow-up. RESULTS Multilevel modeling revealed that neither maladaptive nor adaptive cognitive coping strategies moderated smoking abstinence outcomes over the course of the study (ps ≥ .271). However, greater use of catastrophizing and lower use of positive reappraisal at baseline were associated with less improvement in the hyperarousal PTSD symptom cluster over the course of the study (ps ≤ .01). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that maladaptive cognitive coping strategies are not necessarily a contraindication for overall outcomes in integrated PTSD and smoking treatment, although they may influence improvement in hyperarousal symptoms. Abstract
Background: Justice-involved youth are at risk to become cigarette smokers as they age, leading to a variety of poor health outcomes. However, little is known about cigarette use among justice-involved youth, especially youth supervised in the community where there is ample opportunity to smoke. Objective: This study investigates the prevalence of cigarette smoking and the associations between cigarette smoking, emotional and behavioral functioning, and other substance use among a sample of first-time offending court-involved, non-incarcerated (FTO-CINI) youth. Methods: Youth were recruited from a family court in the Northeast (N = 423). Substance use was self-reported using the Adolescent Risk Behavior Assessment (ARBA). Emotional and behavioral functioning was measured using the Behavior Assessment Schedule for Children-Second Edition (BASC-2), the Affect Dysregulation Scale (ADS), National Stressful Events Survey PTSD Short Scale (NSESSS), and the National Survey of Self-Reported Delinquency (NYS-SRD). Results: About 9.9% of FTO-CINI youth had smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days. Compared with FTO-CINI youth who had not smoked recently, recent smokers endorsed more emotional and behavioral symptoms, such as school problems (p < .001), internalizing problems (p = .012), inattention/hyperactivity (p = .020), affect dysregulation (p = .044), PTSD symptoms (p = .006), and delinquent behavior (p < .001). Recent smokers were also more likely to use alcohol (OR = 5.61, p < .001), marijuana (OR = 11.27, p < .001), and other drugs (OR = 5.00, p < .001). Conclusions: Recent smoking was higher among FTO-CINI youth than youth in the general population. Findings underscore the need to incorporate nicotine into existing substance use prevention interventions for this population, who are at high risk to initiate cigarette use as they age.

Abstract
Men who have sex with men (MSM) and are living with HIV have reported high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance use. We examined relationships between accumulative IPV, incidents of IPV, and numbers of substances used. One hundred twenty Taiwanese MSM living with HIV completed a cross-sectional survey. Accumulative IPV was assessed by summing the number of 15 types of IPV experienced in the previous year; substance use was measured by any use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs during the previous week. In multivariate analysis, IPV was not associated with tobacco use but was positively associated with alcohol and other drug use and significantly associated with the probability of using multiple substances. MSM living with HIV who experienced greater IPV were more likely to use alcohol and other drugs and were more likely to use more than one substance. Health care providers screening for IPV should also screen for substance use.

Abstract
Background Whether trauma exposure itself or consequent posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is primarily responsible for smoking and failure to quit remains unclear. Methods A cohort of male Australian Vietnam veterans (N = 388) was interviewed twice, 22 and 36 years after their return to Australia using standardized psychiatric diagnostic and health interviews and assessment of combat exposure. The smoking trajectory over time revealed a spectrum of outcomes (never smoked, early quitters, late quitters, and continuing smokers). Analysis used multivariate statistics to assess the relative contributions of combat trauma exposure and PTSD while controlling for potential confounders. Results The trajectory of smoking over time revealed that 21.9% of veterans had never smoked, 45.1% had quit smoking by the time of wave 1, 16.2% were current smokers at wave 1 who had quit by the time of wave 2, 2.8% were late adopters who were current smokers, and 13.9% were continuing smokers. Smoking was associated in single-predictor models with demographics, intelligence, combat exposure, PTSD symptom clusters and diagnosis, and alcohol disorders. Multivariate analysis revealed that PTSD, combat, and intelligence were related to the smoking spectrum but, after adding demographics and other Axis I psychiatric diagnoses, only combat remained significant. No PTSD symptom cluster uniquely predicted smoking status. Conclusions The results suggest that trauma exposure in the form of military combat may be a more robust predictor of smoking status over time than PTSD. It may be stress itself, rather than poststress disorder, that is more germane to smoking and failure to quit. Implications Exposure to traumatic stress and development of PTSD have been implicated separately in the maintenance of smoking. This longitudinal cohort study of smoking in war veterans up to three decades postwar enabled evaluation of traumatic stress exposure in combat and the course of PTSD in smoking and quitting while controlling for intelligence, background disadvantage, and other psychiatric conditions. Combat rather than PTSD emerged as more significant to smoking status, suggesting that it may be the traumatic stress itself rather than the development of a poststress disorder that is more germane to smoking in war veterans.

Abstract
Tobacco use is a prevalent problem in the general population as well as among military veterans. Despite the fact that tobacco users are at an increased risk of many medical and psychiatric comorbidities, the risk of cognitive impairment in younger active tobacco users is less studied. Military veterans from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan (n = 113) were administered a neuropsychological protocol. Even after controlling for the severity of PTSD symptoms, tobacco use was negatively related to performance on measures of processing speed, memory, and executive functioning. The current findings have implications for the neuropsychological evaluation of tobacco users.

Introduction
Smoking is a lethal public health problem that is common in US military veterans, particularly those with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Mobile applications (apps) to promote smoking cessation are a scalable and low-cost approach that may facilitate treatment engagement.
Methods
This qualitative study examined the acceptability, user experience, and perceptions of a smoking cessation app, Stay Quit Coach (SQC), when incorporated into evidence-based smoking cessation treatment. US military veterans with PTSD who smoked at least five cigarettes per day for 15 of the past 30 days and stated an interested in cessation were eligible to participate. Participants’ baseline comfort levels with mobile technology was measured using the Perceptions of Mobile Phone Interventions Questionnaire–Patient version (PMPIQ-P). At treatment end, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted.
Results
Twenty participants were enrolled and 17 (85.0%) participated in the qualitative interview at treatment end. PMPIQ-P scores at baseline ranged from 4.97 to 5.25 (SDs = 0.73–1.04), reflecting moderately high comfort with mobile technology among participants. Qualitative analyses indicated that most participants: (1) endorsed mobile technology as an appealing format for smoking cessation treatment, due to convenience and instantaneous access; and (2) expressed highest perceived helpfulness for interactive app features. Recommendations to improve SQC clustered into four thematic areas: (1) increasing personalization, (2) including more self-tracking features, (3) increasing visual cues, and (4) sharing progress with peers.
Conclusions
SQC was perceived as an acceptable and useful tool to support smoking cessation in a sample of veteran smokers with PTSD. Qualitative data provided valuable insights that can inform the continued development of SQC and other apps for smoking cessation.
Implications
Given the high lethality associated with cigarette smoking, it is crucial to identify scalable, low-risk strategies to promote smoking cessation, particularly in high-risk populations. Mobile technology is a promising approach that can be used to augment evidence-based smoking cessation treatment. Results of this qualitative study support the use of the SQC mobile app when incorporated into evidence-based smoking cessation treatment for veterans with PTSD and provide future directions for refinement of the SQC app. These findings also highlight the importance of using a patient-centered approach in designing apps intended for a clinical population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Trauma-exposed individuals with and without posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are more likely to smoke and less successful in quit attempts than individuals without psychopathology. Contingency management (CM) techniques (i.e., incentives for abstinence) have demonstrable efficacy for smoking cessation in some populations with psychopathology, but have not been well tested in PTSD. This pilot study examined the feasibility of CM plus brief cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in promoting smoking cessation among trauma-exposed individuals with and without PTSD. METHODS Fifty trauma-exposed smokers (18 with PTSD) were asked to abstain from tobacco and nicotine replacement therapy for one month. During week one of cessation, CBT was provided daily and increasing CM stipends were paid for each continuous day of biochemically-verified abstinence; CM stipends were withheld in response to smoking lapses and reset to the initial payment level upon abstinence resumption. CBT and fixed payments for study visits were provided during the subsequent three weeks. RESULTS Of the 50 eligible participants who attended at least one pre-quit visit (49% female, 35% current PTSD), 43 (86%) attended the first post-quit study visit, 32 (64%) completed the first week of CM/CBT treatment, and 26 (52%) completed the study. Post-quit seven-day point prevalence abstinence rates for participants with and without PTSD, respectively, were similar: 39% vs. 38% (1 week), 33% vs. 28% (2 weeks), 22% vs. 19% (3 weeks), and 22% vs. 13% (4 weeks). CONCLUSIONS Use of CM + CBT to support tobacco abstinence is a promising intervention for trauma-exposed smokers with and without PTSD.

Abstract
Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance consumption commonly co-occur in victims of sexual assault. Substance consumption can occur pre- andi/or post-assault. Pre-assault substance consumption may have an impact on the subsequent development of PTSD. This review aims to provide an overview of current understanding of the effects of acute substance intoxication and chronic pre-assault problematic substance use on symptoms of PTSD amongst individuals who were victims of sexual assault. Methods: PsycINFO, EMBASE, and MEDLINE were searched using terms related to PTSD, sexual assault, and substance consumption. These yielded 2,121 articles, 268 of which were retrieved for more detailed evaluation and 13 of these met inclusion criteria and were appraised in full. Results: Overall, the reviewed papers supported our hypothesis that acute substance intoxication and chronic pre-assault problematic substance use are associated with fewer initial PTSD symptoms but less improvement over time, resulting in slower overall PTSD recovery. They also highlighted post-assault characterological self-blame and negative social reactions as mediators of recovery in the context of pre-assault substance consumption. Conclusions: Acute substance intoxication and chronic pre-assault problematic substance use appear to have an impact on the development of PTSD symptoms amongst victims of sexual assault. The importance of developing early interventions and routine screening and assessment for PTSD and pre-assault substance consumption is emphasized. The limited research on male victims and on substances other than alcohol is highlighted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous reviews of the PTSD and cigarette smoking literature showed high PTSD-smoking comorbidity and problematic smoking outcomes (Feldner et al., 2007, Clinical Psychology Review, 27, 14-45; Fu et al., 2007, Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 9, 1071-1084). However, past reviews also noted several prominent gaps in the literature, including a lack of etiological work examining underlying mechanisms and research on specialized PTSD-smoking treatments. The present review summarizes an extensive body of research conducted since the previous reviews targeting these areas of need. METHODS Literature searches identified 66 empirical studies specific to smoking and PTSD. RESULTS Smokers were approximately twice more likely to have PTSD than nonsmokers in the general population, and individuals with PTSD were approximately twice as likely to be current smokers. Smokers with PTSD evidenced more negative affect, trauma history, and comorbid psychiatric history, as well as quit attempts and higher relapse rates. PTSD symptoms were associated with expectations that smoking would reduce negative affect, which, in turn, was associated with increased smoking rate and nicotine dependence. Male sex was associated with nicotine dependence and PTSD avoidance, while the relationship between PTSD and smoking relapse due to withdrawal was stronger in females. Specialized, integrated PTSD and smoking cessation treatments showed promise in increasing quit success relative to standard care in randomized trials. CONCLUSIONS Rates of PTSD-smoking co-occurrence remain high. Notable gains have been made in relevant epidemiological and etiological research, although more work is needed in trauma-specific subpopulations. Several promising specialized treatments for comorbid smoking-PTSD have been developed and empirically tested but require replication.

Abstract
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and tobacco use are prevalent conditions that co-occur at striking rates in the US. Previous reviews examined prevalence and factors associated with cigarette smoking among individuals with PTSD but have not been summarized since 2007. Moreover, none explored rates and factors associated with the use of other tobacco products. This study aimed to systematically review the most recent literature examining the comorbidity of PTSD and tobacco use to provide prevalence rates, as well as summarize the literature exploring other factors associated with tobacco use among individuals with PTSD. Studies were identified using a systematic search of keywords related to tobacco use and PTSD within the following databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Knowledge, CINAHL, PsycARTICLES, and Cochrane Clinical Trials Library. The studies included in this review (N = 66) showed that the prevalence of current use of tobacco products in individuals with PTSD was 24.0% and the rate of PTSD among users of tobacco products was 20.2%. Additionally, results demonstrated that individuals with PTSD present with high levels of nicotine dependence and heavy use of tobacco products, as well as underscore the importance of negative emotional states as a contributing factor to tobacco use among individuals with PTSD. It is imperative that future studies continue monitoring tobacco use among individuals with PTSD while also assessing factors identified as having a prominent role in tobacco use among individuals with PTSD. These findings also demonstrate the need for more innovative approaches to reduce the pervasive tobacco use among individuals with PTSD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this research was to determine whether augmenting standard smoking cessation treatment by wearing an active nicotine patch before the smoking quit date improves rates of smoking cessation in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to explore mechanisms of treatment response such as decreased cigarette craving and symptom relief from smoking. METHODS This was a double-blind parallel randomized controlled trial in 81 people with PTSD who smoked cigarettes. Participants were recruited from Veterans Affairs outpatient clinics and flyers in the community. Participants provided ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) of PTSD symptoms, smoking withdrawal symptoms, and cravings before and after smoking a cigarette during one week of ad lib smoking and then three weeks of either a nicotine patch (n = 37) or placebo patch (n = 44) preceding the quit date. All participants received standard pharmacotherapy and behavioral treatment for smoking cessation after the quit date. To test the efficacy of nicotine patch preloading for engaging proposed treatment targets during the pre-quit phases, we used multilevel models to compare post-smoking changes in symptoms and cravings during the preloading phases to post-smoking changes reported during the ad lib smoking phase. RESULTS There was no significant difference in quit rates across the two conditions on the primary outcome of seven-day point prevalence smoking abstinence bioverified with breath carbon monoxide at six weeks post-quit date. In a multivariable multilevel model pre- to post-cigarette changes in PTSD symptom clusters, smoking withdrawal symptoms, and cravings, there was a significant interaction between treatment phase and condition. Relative to participants in the placebo condition, participants in the nicotine patch condition experienced diminished relief from PTSD reexperiencing symptoms, smoking withdrawal symptoms, and cigarette craving after smoking a cigarette. CONCLUSIONS Relative to placebo patch preloading, nicotine patch preloading diminished the reinforcing effects of smoking cigarettes. However, the low quit rates in both conditions suggest that nicotine patch preloading is not a sufficiently intensive treatment for achieving smoking cessation in people with PTSD.
