Auditory neuroscience: Balancing excitation and inhibition during development

Early unilateral cochlear implantation promotes mature cortical asymmetries in adolescents who are deaf

Unilateral cochlear implant (CI) stimulation establishes hearing to children who are deaf but compromises bilateral auditory development if a second implant is not provided within ∼ 1.5 years. In this study we asked: 1) What are the cortical consequences of missing this early sensitive period once children reach adolescence? 2) What are the effects of unilateral deprivation on the pathways from the opposite ear? Cortical responses were recorded from 64-cephalic electrodes within the first week of bilateral CI activation in 34 adolescents who had over 10 years of unilateral right CI experience and in 16 normal hearing peers. Cortical activation underlying the evoked peaks was localized to areas of the brain using beamformer imaging. The first CI evoked activity which was more strongly lateralized to the contralateral left hemisphere than normal, with abnormal recruitment of the left prefrontal cortex (involved in cognition/attention), left temporo-parietal-occipital junction (multi-modal integration), and right precuneus (visual processing) region. CI stimulation in the opposite deprived ear evoked atypical cortical responses with abnormally large and widespread dipole activity across the cortex. Thus, using a unilateral CI to hear beyond the period of cortical maturation causes lasting asymmetries in the auditory system, requires recruitment of additional cortical areas to support hearing, and does little to protect the unstimulated pathways from effects of auditory deprivation. The persistence of this reorganization into maturity could signal a closing of a sensitive period for promoting auditory development on the deprived side.

Transmission efficiency in ring, brain inspired neuronal networks. Information and energetic aspects

Organisms often evolve as compromises, and many of these compromises can be expressed in terms of energy efficiency. Thus, many authors analyze energetic costs processes during information transmission in the brain. In this paper we study information transmission rate per energy used in a class of ring, brain inspired neural networks, which we assume to involve components like excitatory and inhibitory neurons or long-range connections. Choosing model of neuron we followed a probabilistic approach proposed by Levy and Baxter (2002), which contains all essential qualitative mechanisms participating in the transmission process and provides results consistent with physiologically observed values. Our research shows that all network components, in broad range of conditions, significantly improve the information-energetic efficiency. It turned out that inhibitory neurons can improve the information-energetic transmission efficiency by 50%, while long-range connections can improve the efficiency even by 70%. We also found that the most effective is the network with the smallest size: we observed that two times increase of the size can cause even three times decrease of the information-energetic efficiency. The ongoing balance of cortical excitation and inhibition during early development

Two papers recently published in Nature propose that the balance between excitation and inhibition is important for the maturation of cortical function. Their conclusions however, are contradictory; one study suggests that balance is established before hearing onset, whereas the other proposes that balance is established after hearing onset. We carefully examined the data and found that the differences between the two groups are less dramatic than they first appear. Despite their methodological differences, both studies provide evidence that an ongoing balance between cortical excitation/inhibition accounts for the maturation and refinement of cortical function during early development.
