Abstract
Even if largely used in canine neonatology, some questions about the Apgar Score (AS) arose. Notably, considering the breed-oriented modifications of the score are needed, slight changes of the score were reported for English (EBs) and French bulldogs (FBs). The present study aimed to evaluate the possible differences between neonatal viability of the two breeds assessed by AS in puppies born via cesarean section. The results obtained from 99 puppies born alive and without malformations (EB = 47, FB = 52) showed significant (p < 0.001) differences in the median AS (seven in EB vs. eight in FB), with Grimace (p < 0.05 for sub-score 0 and p < 0.001 for sub-score 2) and Attitude (p < 0.05) being differently sub-scored between the two breeds. In the 89 alive puppies at 7 days of age, the same difference in the median AS was observed (p < 0.001), and only Grimace was differently sub-scored between the two breeds (p < 0.05 for sub-score 0 and p < 0.01 for sub-score 2). These results suggest that low Grimace could be an intrinsic characteristic of EB newborns, but it could negatively affect the neonatal adaptation process of EBs, providing an indication for focused neonatal assistance. Neonatal mortality at 7 days of age was higher in EBs than in FBs (17 vs. 3.8%, respectively), which deserves further investigations. The study provides further evidence that breed-oriented ASs are needed for a better evaluation and assistance of purebred puppies at birth.

Abstract
Mother-young bonding is a type of early learning where the female and their newborn recognize each other through a series of neurobiological mechanisms and neurotransmitters that establish a behavioral preference for filial individuals. This process is essential to promote their welfare by providing maternal care, particularly in altricial species, animals that require extended parental care due to their limited neurodevelopment at birth. Olfactory, auditory, tactile, and visual stimuli trigger the neural integration of multimodal sensory and conditioned affective associations in mammals. This review aims to discuss the neurobiological aspects of bonding processes in altricial mammals, with a focus on the brain structures and neurotransmitters involved and how these influence the signaling during the first days of the life of newborns.

Abstract
It is common practice in EU member states to permit the entry of dogs vaccinated against rabies at the age of at least 3 months. In the absence of easily applicable comparative data, subjective disputes emerge around age. The aim of our study was to observe the development of dog teeth. During birth, an abnormally lying Yorkshire Terrier fetus was stuck in the birth canal, which led to a caesarean section, hence, the exact date of birth was known. For the next 4 months, two puppies were examined weekly, and they showed the same development. The dogs were born without teeth. At the age of 4.5 weeks, the canines I appeared, together with the adjacent incisors (i3), and the second incisor (i2) also erupted at the age of 6 weeks. A week later, a first incisor (i1) also appeared. From the age of 2.5 months, the distance between the teeth was increasing, especially on the upper dental arch. At 3.5 months of age, only the bottom front incisors (i1) had not grown in a row, and the significant distance between the top incisors, comparable to the width of the tooth, was striking. Since only two dogs of one breed were involved in this case study, the observations cannot be generalized.

Abstract
Case series summary The aim of this case series was to describe the clinical presentation,
imaging findings and histopathology of three cats with limited dorsal
myeloschisis (LDM). The history, examination and MRI sequences were reviewed
in three cases presented to a single referral hospital. The surgery report
and histopathology were described in two cases. All cats were young (10
weeks old, 5 months old, 4 years old), presenting with varying degrees of
progressive paraparesis. All had a midline skin defect overlying the spinal
column that was either sunken or saccular, containing fluid thought to be
cerebrospinal fluid. MRI sequences demonstrated tissue extending from the
dura through an overlying bifid spinous process and attached to the dermis,
with associated spinal cord tethering, atrophy and syringomyelia. Lesions
were located at L2–L3, T8–T9 and L4. Histopathology described a fibroneural
stalk with a glio-ependymal lining, surrounded by glial nests and nerve
fibres. The youngest and most severely affected was euthanased, while the
other two underwent surgery. Both regained independent ambulation with
persistent paraparesis; however, one required ongoing management of urinary
incontinence. Relevance and novel information LDM is a primary neural tube defect that may result in neurological deficits,
including bladder dysfunction, and is characterised by a fibroneural stalk
between the dermis and the spinal cord. Distinct MRI features, such as a
visible intrathecal tract, dorsally tethered cord and syringomyelia, help
distinguish this condition from the clinically similar dermoid sinus. The
presence of progressive neurological signs, with a palpable midline defect
overlying the affected spinal cord segment, may raise suspicion for this
clinical entity in veterinary patients.

Abstract
Spina bifida with or without meningocele or meningomyelocele is encountered infrequently in small animal practice. The English bulldog and Manx cat are breeds predisposed. Although often silent clinically, in those animals with clinical signs, it is important to recognize the signs early and to understand the appropriate imaging modalities employed in establishing a diagnosis. In a select population of affected animals, proposed surgical intervention may be considered to prevent neurologic decline, prevent secondary complications, and potentially improve outcomes.

Abstract
Ultrasonography is a valuable diagnostic tool that has been used for diagnosis of neonatal brain diseases. The purpose of the present study was to describe the sequential ultrasonographic appearance of the normal canine neonatal brain from birth till closure of the bregmatic fontanelle. In total, 16 clinically normal neonates of mixed breed dogs were used. The bregmatic fontanelle was used as an acoustic window to record 5 transcranial scans (3 transverse, 1 sagittal, and 1 parasagittal scans) at 3, 10, 20, and 30 days of age. The appearance, echogenicity, and developmental differentiation of the structures within the cranium were described. Good images were obtained at 10 and 20 days of age. At 30 days of age, the obtained images presented poor details, as the fontanelle was small. Data obtained from this study represent the basis of brain ultrasound in neonates until 30 days of age, which could be beneficial in diagnosing congenital brain diseases.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate tear production by means of modified Schirmer tear tes-1 (mSTT-1) in neonate cats. Likewise, correlation between mSTT-1 and STT-1 was assessed in vitro. Standard SST strips were cut in half and after eye lid opening, tear production of neonates (n=15) was daily measured in both eyes (mSTT-1), until the 7th day, and at day 14, 21, and 28. Animals were daily weighted until 28 days of age. Results were compared statistically (P<0.05). During the first 7 days, the overall mSTT-1 mean was 0.76 wetting/minute. Significant differences between right and left eyes were not observed at any time point (P=1.00). Tear secretion increased significantly, from the 14th to 28th day, in comparison with 7 first days (P<0.05). Positive correlation between maturity parameters and tear secretion was observed (P<0.0001). Distance between slopes of each strip changed significantly (P<0.0001). It was concluded that tear secretion in the neonatal period of cats is very below the reference values described for young and adults of the same species. It is not possible to extrapolate results obtained with mSTT-1 to standard STT-1.

Abstract
A male Labrador Retriever neonate presented for evaluation 8 hours after birth because of the onset of generalized seizure activity. The neonate was one of 8 puppies delivered over a 19-hour period to a 4-year-old female Labrador Retriever at an assistance dog breeding colony. Uterine and fetal heart monitoring were performed during the first and second stages of labor; secondary uterine inertia was diagnosed 10 hours after the onset of stage-1 labor. In addition to standard medical therapy, manual assistance was provided for the delivery of all but the second puppy (feathering, pulling, elevating forequarters, abdominal compression). The puppy presented was the third puppy born. At birth, resuscitation efforts were instituted because of a lack of spontaneous breathing and bradycardia. In an effort to remove amniotic fluid from the airways, the puppy was "swung" by an experienced attendee in an arch from mid-abdomen height to knee height while cradled in both hands with the head stabilized. Initial evaluation of the puppy revealed normal blood glucose and no ultrasonographic evidence of hydrocephalus. Because of continued seizure activity, euthanasia and necropsy were elected. At necropsy, there was gross evidence of subdural hematoma formation. Subsequent histopathology of the brain, liver, lung, spleen, small intestine, colon, and kidney revealed subdural and intracerebral hemorrhage. Findings were consistent with high-velocity deceleration trauma ("shaken baby syndrome"). Traditional neonatal resuscitation via "swinging" is a dangerous and potentially lethal practice capable of inducing significant brain trauma in the canine neonate.

Abstract
Three cases of feline cerebellar hypoplasia are presented. At the time of examination, the ages of the cats ranged from 2 months to 1 year. Necropsy revealed cerebellar and pons hypoplasia. Polymerase chain reaction for parvoviral deoxyribonucleic acid was positive in cerebellar tissue. Cell-specific immunolabeling was used to characterize the lesions, which were characterized into 2 types. In type 1 lesions, the cortex was nearly agranular, with an extremely thin molecular layer; the Purkinje cells were randomly placed and oriented, and their stunted main dendrite produced a thorn-covered atrophic dendritic tree; the basket cell axons ran randomly and had dysmorphic endings; and myelinated fibers were severely reduced in folia axes. In type 2 lesions, the cortex was hypogranular; the Purkinje cells were linearly organized, but their main dendrite extended too far in the molecular layer before giving up smooth, bent secondary dendrites; many basket cells were located along the cerebellar surface, and their axons ran at right angle to the surface; myelinated fibers were moderately reduced. Defects in climbing fiber synapse translocation and elimination were evident in both types of lesion. This immunohistologic study allowed a comparison between lesions in these spontaneous cerebellar hypoplasia cases with those documented when using silver impregnation studies after perinatal experimental cerebellar damage. Such a comparison is consistent with viral infection that occurs before birth in all 3 cases. Progress in parvovirus biology knowledge suggests that viral NS1 protein cytotoxicity might explain degenerative changes in the Purkinje cells that were present, in addition to the development defect.
