Protective effect of luteolin on acute lung injury in a rat model of sepsis

We investigated the effects of luteolin (LUT) treatment on acute lung injury caused by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) induced septic rats. We also investigated the relation between LUT and the cytokines, interleukin-10 (IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). LUT was administered 1 h after CLP surgery. Administration of LUT reduced the glutathione level and superoxide dismutase activity in rat lung tissues. We also found significant reduction of malondialdehyde following LUT treatment. LUT administration also reduced TNF-α and IL-10 mRNA expression in lung tissue. Histopathologic investigation of lung tissue supported our biochemical and molecular findings. Administration of LUT ameliorated lung injury in CLP induced septic rats owing to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Is There a Role for Hematopoietic Growth Factors During Sepsis?

Sepsis is a complex syndrome characterized by simultaneous activation of pro- and anti-inflammatory processes. After an inflammatory phase, patients present signs of immunosuppression and possibly persistent inflammation. Hematopoietic growth factors (HGFs) are glycoproteins that cause immune cells to mature and/or proliferate. HGFs also have a profound effect on cell functions and behavior. HGFs play crucial role in sepsis pathophysiology and were tested in several clinical trials without success to date. This review summarizes the role played by HGFs during sepsis and their potential therapeutic role in the Management of sepsis-related immune disturbances.

Systemic endogenous erythropoietin and associated disorders in extremely preterm newborns

OBJECTIVE

To explore the association between concentrations of endogenous erythropoietin (EPO) in blood the first 2 weeks of life and neonatal disorders in extremely low gestational age newborns (ELGANs).

DESIGN

Prospective cohort study.

SETTING

Neonatal care units at 14 participating hospitals in the USA.

PATIENTS

867 children born before the 28th week of gestation from the ELGAN study cohort.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

EPO blood concentrations were measured on postnatal days 1, 7 and 14. The following neonatal characteristics and disorders were registered: blood gases, early and late respiratory dysfunction, pulmonary deterioration, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). We calculated the gestational age-adjusted ORs for having each disorder associated with an EPO blood concentration in the highest or lowest quartile, compared with infants whose EPO concentration was in the middle two quartiles on the corresponding day.

RESULTS

Newborns whose day-1 EPO was in the highest quartile were at increased risk for early and persistent respiratory dysfunction during the first 2 weeks of life, and NEC requiring surgery. The lowest EPO quartile on day 1 was associated with a decreased risk of moderate BPD. The association between low EPO and decreased risk of respiratory complications persisted on day 7. On day 14, being in the highest EPO quartile was associated with increased risk of ROP, and BPD not requiring ventilation assistance.

CONCLUSIONS

EPO blood concentrations in extremely preterm newborns during the first 2 weeks of life convey information about increased risks of bowel, lung and retinal diseases.

Differential short-term regional effects of early high dose erythropoietin on white matter in preterm lambs after mechanical ventilation

Inadvertently injurious ventilation of preterm neonates in the delivery room can cause cerebral white matter (WM) inflammation and injury. We investigated the impact of an early high dose of recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) on ventilation-induced WM changes in preterm lambs. Injurious ventilation, targeting a V(T) of 15 ml kg(-1) with no positive end-expiratory pressure, was initiated for 15 min in preterm lambs (0.85 gestation). Conventional ventilation was continued for a further 105 min. Lambs received either 5000 IU kg(-1) of EPO (EPREX®; Vent+EPO; n = 6) or vehicle (Vent; n = 8) via an umbilical vein at 4 ± 2 min. Markers of WM injury and inflammation were assessed using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry and compared to a group of unventilated controls (UVC; n = 4). In Vent+EPO lambs compared to Vent lambs: (i) interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 mRNA levels in the periventricular WM and IL-8 mRNA levels in the subcortical WM were higher (P < 0.05 for all); (ii) the density of microglia within the aggregations was not different in the periventricular WM and was lower in the subcortical WM (P = 0.001); (iii) the density of astrocytes was lower in the subcortical WM (P = 0.002); (iv) occludin and claudin-1 mRNA levels were higher in the periventricular WM (P < 0.02 for all) and (vi) the number of blood vessels with protein extravasation was lower (P < 0.05). Recombinant human EPO had variable regional effects within the WM when administered during injurious ventilation. The adverse short-term outcomes discourage the use of early high dose EPO administration in preterm ventilated babies.

The protective effects of IgM-enriched immunoglobulin and erythropoietin on the lung and small intestine tissues of rats with induced sepsis: biochemical and histopathological evaluation

CONTEXT

Sepsis continues to be a significant problem for critical care patients.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the protective effects of IgM-enriched immunoglobulin and erythropoietin on pulmonary and small intestine tissues in a rat model of intra-abdominal sepsis induced via the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) method.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Control group (n = 6): surgical procedure was not performed. Laparotomy was only performed in the sham group (n = 6) and CLP was only performed in the sepsis (CLP) group (n = 30). After erythropoietin (2000 U/kg, intraperitoneal) was given in the sepsis + erythropoietin (CLP + EPO) group (n = 30), IgM-enriched immunoglobulin (600 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) was given in the sepsis + pentaglobin (CLP + PEN) group (n = 30), CLP was created. Intracardiac blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis; lung and small intestine tissue samples were removed for histopathological evaluation.

RESULTS

Plasma TNF-α levels (pg/ml) were similar among CLP, CLP + EPO, and CLP + PEN groups (204.0 ± 52.4, 198.5 ± 17.3, and 214.6 ± 93.6, respectively). The CLP group had higher plasma IL-1β levels (pg/ml) compared with CLP + EPO and CLP + PEN groups (325.1 ± 134.1, 164.3 ± 25.6, and 186.3 ± 26.0, respectively) (p < 0.05). Rats in CLP + EPO and CLP + PEN groups had abolished histopathologic appearance of lung and small intestine tissues compared with rats in the CLP group.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

Our findings support the use of EPO and IgM-enriched immunoglobulin in the prevention of lung and small intestine injuries associated with sepsis.

Erythropoietin and organ protection: lessons from negative clinical trials

Based on its pleiotropic effects, erythropoietin can decrease inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Erythropoietin provides organ protection for the heart, brain, and kidney in diverse preclinical animal studies, especially models that include ischemia–reperfusion injury and/or inflammation. However, large clinical studies in coronary reperfusion, heart failure, stroke, acute kidney injury, and chronic renal disease have failed to demonstrate improved outcomes. A study in a previous issue of Critical Care examining the ability of erythropoietin to prevent or ameliorate acute kidney injury in patients undergoing complex valvular heart surgery is similarly negative. The failure of erythropoietin in clinical studies may be due to an inadequate dose, since the receptors responsible for organ protection may require higher concentrations than those responsible for erythropoiesis. However, as has occurred in studies in sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome, the negative studies probably reflect an inadequate understanding of the complexity of the underlying processes with multiple redundant and interacting pathways that may differ among the large number of different cell types involved. As tools to understand this complexity and integrate it on an organismal basis continue to evolve, we will develop the ability to use erythropoietin and related nonhematopoietic agents for organ protection.

Effect of erythropoietin on primed leucocyte expression profile

Resistance to erythropoietin (EPO) affects a significant number of anaemic patients with end-stage renal disease. Previous reports suggest that inflammation is one of the major independent predictors of EPO resistance, and the effects of EPO treatment on inflammatory mediators are not well established. The aim of this study was to investigate EPO-induced modification to gene expression in primary cultured leucocytes. Microarray experiments were performed on primed ex vivo peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and treated with human EPO-α. Data suggested that EPO-α modulated genes involved in cell movement and interaction in primed PBMCs. Of note, EPO-α exerts anti-inflammatory effects inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-8 and its receptor CXCR2; by contrast, EPO-α increases expression of genes relating to promotion of inflammation encoding for IL-1β and CCL8, and induces de novo synthesis of IL-1α, CXCL1 and CXCL5 in primed cells. The reduction in MAPK p38-α activity is involved in modulating both IL-1β and IL-8 expression. Unlike the induction of MAPK, Erk1/2 activity leads to upregulation of IL-1β, but does not affect IL-8 expression and release. Furthermore, EPO-α treatment of primed cells induces the activation of caspase-1 upstream higher secretion of IL-1β, and this process is not dependent on caspase-8 activation. In conclusion, our findings highlight new potential molecules involved in EPO resistance and confirm the anti-inflammatory role for EPO, but also suggest a plausible in vivo scenario in which the positive correlation found between EPO resistance and elevated levels of some pro-inflammatory mediators is due to treatment with EPO itself.

Prophylactic erythropoietin exacerbates ventilation-induced lung inflammation and injury in preterm lambs

Ventilation-induced lung injury (VILI) of preterm neonates probably contributes to the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Erythropoietin (EPO) has been suggested as a therapy for BPD. The aim of this study was to determine whether prophylactic administration of EPO reduces VILI in preterm newborn lambs. Lambs at 126 days of gestation (term is 147 days) were delivered and ventilated with a high tidal volume strategy for 15 min to cause lung injury, then received gentle ventilation until 2 h of age. Lambs were randomized to receive intravenous EPO (5000 IU kg(-1): Vent+EPO; n = 6) or phosphate-buffered saline (Vent; n = 7) soon after birth: unventilated controls (UVC; n = 8) did not receive ventilation or any treatment. Physiological parameters were recorded throughout the experimental procedure. Samples of lung were collected for histological and molecular assessment of inflammation and injury. Samples of liver were collected to assess the systemic acute phase response. Vent+EPO lambs received higher F IO 2, P aO 2 and oxygenation during the first 10 min than Vent lambs. There were no differences in physiological indices beyond this time. Total lung injury score, airway wall thickness, inflammation and haemorrhage were higher in Vent+EPO lambs than in Vent lambs. Lung inflammation and early markers of lung and systemic injury were elevated in ventilated lambs relative to unventilated lambs; EPO administration further increased lung inflammation and markers of lung and systemic injury. Prophylactic EPO exacerbates VILI, which may increase the incidence and severity of long-term respiratory disease. More studies are required before EPO can be used for lung protection in preterm infants.

Neuroplasticity and the next wave of antidepressant strategies

Depression is a common chronic psychiatric disorder that is also often co-morbid with numerous neurological and immune diseases. Accumulating evidence indicates that disturbances of neuroplasticity occur with depression, including reductions of hippocampal neurogenesis and cortical synaptogenesis. Improper trophic support stemming from stressor-induced reductions of growth factors, most notably brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), likely drives such aberrant neuroplasticity. We posit that psychological and immune stressors can interact upon a vulnerable genetic background to promote depression by disturbing BDNF and neuroplastic processes. Furthermore, the chronic and commonly relapsing nature of depression is suggested to stem from "faulty wiring" of emotional circuits driven by neuroplastic aberrations. The present review considers depression in such terms and attempts to integrate the available evidence indicating that the efficacy of current and "next wave" antidepressant treatments, whether used alone or in combination, is at least partially tied to their ability to modulate neuroplasticity. We particularly focus on the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, ketamine, which already has well documented rapid antidepressant effects, and the trophic cytokine, erythropoietin (EPO), which we propose as a potential adjunctive antidepressant agent.

Erythropoietin prevents lymphoid apoptosis but has no effect on survival in experimental sepsis

BACKGROUND

Lymphoid apoptosis in sepsis is associated with poor outcome, and prevention of apoptosis frequently improves survival in experimental models of sepsis. Recently, erythropoietin (EPO) was shown to protect against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mortality. As cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) is a clinically more relevant model of sepsis, we evaluated the effect of EPO on CLP-induced lymphoid tissue apoptosis and mortality.

METHODS

Young Wistar rats were subjected to polymicrobial sepsis by CLP. EPO (5,000 U/kg intraperitoneal) was administered 30 min before CLP and then 1 and 4 h after CLP. Spleen, thymus, and small intestine were harvested at 24 h and assessed for apoptosis by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase nick-end labeling (TUNEL) and caspase-3 staining. A separate group of animals was followed up for mortality.

RESULTS

Splenic, thymic, and intestinal apoptosis was increased after CLP; administration of EPO significantly decreased apoptosis as determined by TUNEL and caspase-3 staining. Final survival in the CLP mortality study was 30% in both saline and EPO groups.

CONCLUSION

Our results provide the first evidence that EPO attenuates lymphoid apoptosis in the CLP model of sepsis. However, EPO is not associated with a survival benefit in the CLP model of sepsis.

Cytokines associated with increased erythropoiesis in Sprague-Dawley rats administered a novel hyperglycosylated analog of recombinant human erythropoietin

We previously reported an increased incidence of thrombotic toxicities in Sprague-Dawley rats administered the highest dose level of a hyperglycosylated analog of recombinant human erythropoietin (AMG 114) for 1 month as not solely dependent on high hematocrit (HCT). Thereafter, we identified increased erythropoiesis as a prothrombotic risk factor increased in the AMG 114 high-dose group with thrombotic toxicities, compared to a low-dose group with no toxicities but similar HCT. Here, we identified pleiotropic cytokines as prothrombotic factors associated with AMG 114 dose level. Before a high HCT was achieved, rats in the AMG 114 high, but not the low-dose group, had imbalanced hemostasis (increased von Willebrand factor and prothrombin time, decreased antithrombin III) coexistent with cytokines implicated in thrombosis: monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1), MCP-3, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1, macrophage inhibitory protein-2, oncostatin M, T-cell-specific protein, stem cell factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, and interleukin-11. While no unique pathway to erythropoiesis stimulating agent-related thrombosis was identified, cytokines associated with increased erythropoiesis contributed to a prothrombotic intravascular environment in the AMG 114 high-dose group, but not in lower dose groups with a similar high HCT.

Erythropoietin attenuates acute kidney dysfunction in murine experimental sepsis by activation of the β-common receptor

The β-common receptor (βcR) plays a pivotal role in the nonhematopoietic tissue-protective effects of erythropoietin (EPO). Here we determined whether EPO reduces the acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by sepsis and whether this effect is mediated by the βcR. In young (2 months old) C57BL/6 wild-type and βcR knockout mice, lipopolysaccharide caused a significant increase in serum urea and creatinine, hence AKI. This AKI was not associated with any overt morphological alterations in the kidney and was attenuated by EPO given 1 h after lipopolysaccharide in wild-type but not in βcR knockout mice. In the kidneys of endotoxemic wild-type mice, EPO enhanced the phosphorylation of Akt, glycogen synthase kinase-3β, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase, and inhibited the activation of nuclear factor-κB. All these effects of EPO were lost in βcR knockout mice. Since sepsis is more severe in older animals or patients, we tested whether EPO was renoprotective in 8-month-old wild-type and βcR knockout mice that underwent cecal ligation and puncture. These older mice developed AKI at 24 h, which was attenuated by EPO treatment 1 h post cecal ligation and puncture in wild-type mice but not in βcR knockout mice. Thus, activation of the βcR by EPO is essential for the observed reduction in AKI in either endotoxemic young mice or older mice with polymicrobial sepsis, and for the activation of well-known signaling pathways by EPO.

The nonhematopoietic effects of erythropoietin in skin regeneration and repair: from basic research to clinical use

Erythropoietin (EPO) is the main regulator of red blood cell production but there exists also a variety of nonhematopoietic properties. More recent data show that EPO is also associated with the protection of tissues suffering from ischemia and reperfusion injury as well as with improved regeneration in various organ systems, in particular the skin. This review highlights the mechanisms of EPO in the different stages of wound healing and the reparative processes in the skin emphasizing pathophysiological mechanisms and potential clinical applications. There is clear evidence that EPO effectively influences all wound-healing phases in a dose-dependent manner. This includes inflammation, tissue, and blood vessel formation as well as the remodeling of the wound. The molecular mechanism is predominantly based on an increased expression of the endothelial and inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase with a consecutive rapid supply of NO as well as an increased content of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the wound. The improved understanding of the functions and regulatory mechanisms of EPO in the context of wound-healing problems and ischemia/reperfusion injury, especially during flap surgery, may lead to new considerations of this growth hormone for its regular clinical application in patients.

Erythropoietin improves skeletal muscle microcirculation through the activation of eNOS in a mouse sepsis model

BACKGROUND

Sepsis and septic shock remain the major causes of morbidity and mortality in intensive care units. One mechanism that leads to organ failure is microcirculatory dysfunction. Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein produced by the kidney that primarily regulates erythropoiesis, but it also can exert hemodynamic, anti-inflammatory, and tissue protective effects. We previously reported that administration of EPO to septic mice improves mouse skeletal muscle capillary perfusion and tissue bioenergetics. The objective of this study was to explore the potential mechanism(s) involved.

METHODS

Sepsis was induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of a fecal suspension (12.5 g in 0.5 saline/mouse) in mice. At 18 hours after sepsis induction, a single dose of rHuEPO (400 U/kg) was given to the mice. Mouse capillary perfusion density and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) fluorescence in skeletal muscle were observed using intravital microscopy. Endothelial cells derived from the skeletal muscle were treated with rHuEPO (5 U/mL) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activation and activity were assessed.

RESULTS

Septic mice had decreased capillary perfusion density and increased tissue NADH fluorescence indicating impaired tissue bioenergetics, whereas animals treated with rHuEPO demonstrated an improvement in capillary perfusion density and decreased skeletal muscle NADH fluorescence. The beneficial effect of rHuEPO did not occur in septic mice treated with l-NAME (an NOS inhibitor, 20 mg/kg) or mice genetically deficient in eNOS. Treatment of endothelial cells with rHuEPO resulted in activation of eNOS as indicated by increased eNOS phosphorylation and NO production.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that eNOS plays an important role in mediating the beneficial effect of rHuEPO on microcirculation in this septic mouse model.

Organ-protective and immunomodulatory effects of erythropoietin--an update on recent clinical trials

Erythropoietin (EPO) belongs to a group of pharmacological agents with multifunctional effects. EPO was originally acknowledged as the main regulator of erythropoiesis, but it also exhibits several extra haematopoietic properties, such as promoting the maintenance of homeostasis of cells under stress. These pleiotropic effects have been extensively investigated in preclinical models including models of ischaemic-reperfusions injuries, inflammation, neuroprotection, neovascularisation and wound healing. Promising effects of EPO have especially been reported in models of ischaemic-reperfusions injuries. The mechanisms by which EPO exerts these organ-protective effects are not completely understood, although anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties have been described. Activation of the EPO receptor initiates several intracellular signalling systems, such as, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, STAT5, mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor-kappa B. These pathways are recognized as involved in the cellular response to stress and regulation of apoptosis. Although EPO has been demonstrated to be effective in animal models, the effect has not been clearly demonstrated in clinical trials. This MiniReview gives a brief introduction to the pleiotropic effects of EPO, the evidence of organ protection in animal models, and discusses the disappointing results obtained from recent clinical trials.

Erythropoietin increases survival and attenuates fulminant hepatic failure injury induced by D-galactosamine/lipopolysaccharide in mice

BACKGROUND

Liver transplantation is the only therapy of proven benefit in fulminant hepatic failure (FHF). Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), d-galactosamine (GalN)-induced FHF is a well-established model of liver injury in mice. Erythropoietin has a powerful tissue-protective effect in animal models. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect and mechanism of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) administration in FHF mice.

METHODS

C57BL/6 (n=42) mice were studied in vivo in a fulminant model induced by GalN/LPS. rhEPO was administered 30 min after the induction of FHF. Serum liver enzymes and hepatic tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1β levels were determined. Histologic analysis was performed, and apoptotic cells were identified by immunohistochemistry for caspase-3. Nuclear factor (NF)-κB and c-Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK) activation were studied using Western blot analysis.

RESULTS

After the induction of FHF, all control mice died within 12 hr of GalN/LPS administration. However, 83% of mice that were administered rhEPO were alive 2 weeks later, and overall survival improved (Kaplan-Meier, P<0.001). The serum liver enzymes, hepatic TNF-α and IL-1β levels, liver histologic injury, and apoptotic hepatocytes were significantly reduced in FHF mice that were administered rhEPO compared with untreated mice. A significant decrease in hepatic NF-κB and JNK activation was noted in FHF rhEPO-treated mice compared with FHF untreated mice.

CONCLUSIONS

The administration of rhEPO brought about increased survival and attenuation of the hepatic injury. This was associated with decreased hepatic NF-κB and JNK activation and thus TNF-α and IL-1β levels. These findings have important implications for the potential use of rhEPO in FHF.

Erythropoietin does not attenuate renal dysfunction or inflammation in a porcine model of endotoxemia

BACKGROUND

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a multifunctional cytokine with anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and organ protective effects. EPO protects against ischemia-reperfusion injuries, and recent reports suggest that EPO also prevents organ dysfunction in experimental sepsis. The aims of this study were to determine whether EPO prevents endotoxemia-induced organ dysfunction in a porcine model and to characterize the immunomodulatory and anti-apoptotic effects of EPO.

METHODS

Twenty-eight pigs were randomly assigned to three groups: (1) endotoxemia treated with EPO 5000 IU/kg, (2) endotoxemia treated with placebo, and (3) a sham group anesthetized and submitted to sham operation without treatment. A laparotomy was performed, and a flow probe was placed around the left renal artery, which allowed renal blood flow (RBF) measurements. Endotoxemia was induced by an infusion of lipopolysaccharide. After 2 h, the infusion was reduced to a maintenance dose and the animals were fluid resuscitated. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR), RBF, renal oxygen consumption, and plasma cytokines [interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha] were analyzed. Renal biopsies were analyzed for cytokine content and apoptosis.

RESULTS

Endotoxemia elicited impaired renal function, estimated as GFR, and increased the levels of renal apoptotic cells, with no modifying effect of EPO. Furthermore, EPO had no effect on RBF, renal oxygen consumption, or the systemic hemodynamic response to endotoxemia. EPO did not modify the inflammatory response, measured as changes in cytokine levels in plasma and organs.

CONCLUSION

EPO did not confer renal protection in this fluid-resuscitated porcine model of endotoxemia, and EPO did not modify the inflammatory response.

Erythropoetin as a novel agent with pleiotropic effects against acute lung injury

Current pharmacotherapy for acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is not optimal, and the biological and physiological complexity of these severe lung injury syndromes requires consideration of combined-agent treatments or agents with pleiotropic action. In this regard, exogenous erythropoietin (EPO) represents a possible candidate since a number of preclinical studies have revealed beneficial effects of EPO administration in various experimental models of ALI. Taken together, this treatment strategy is not a single mediator approach, but it rather provides protection by modulating multiple levels of early signaling pathways involved in apoptosis, inflammation, and peroxidation, potentially restoring overall homeostasis. Furthermore, EPO appears to confer vascular protection by promoting angiogenesis. However, only preliminary studies exist and more experimental and clinical studies are necessary to clarify the efficacy and potentially cytoprotective mechanisms of EPO action. In addition to the attempts to optimize the dose and timing of EPO administration, it would be of great value to minimize any potential toxicity, which is essential for EPO to fulfill its role as a potential candidate for the treatment of ALI in routine clinical practice. The present article reviews recent advances that have elucidated biological and biochemical activities of EPO that may be potentially applicable for ALI/ARDS management.
