Symbiosis of sulfate-reducing bacteria and methanogenic archaea in sewer systems

The sewer advances: How to select eco-friendly pipe materials for environmental protection

Sewer pipe materials exhibit diverse inner-surface features, which can affect the attachment of biofilm and influence microbial metabolic processes. To investigate the role of the type of pipe material on the composition and metabolic capabilities of the adhering microorganisms, three sets of urban sewers (High-Density Polyethylene Pipe (HDPE), Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP), and Concrete Pipe (CP)) were constructed. Measurements of biofilm thickness and environmental factors revealed that the thickest biofilm in CP pipes reached 2000 μm, with ORP values as low as -325 mV, indicating a more suitable anaerobic microbial habitat. High-throughput sequencing showed similar relative abundances of genera related to carbon and sulfur metabolism in the DIP and CP pipes, whereas HDPE exhibited only half the relative abundance compared to that found in the other pipes. To explore the impact of pipe materials on the mechanisms of microbial response, a metagenomic approach was used to investigate the biological transformation of carbon and sulfur in wastewater. The annotations of the crucial enzyme-encoding genes related to methyl coenzyme M and sulfite reductase in DIP and CP were 50 and 110, respectively, whereas HDPE exhibited lower counts (25 and 70, respectively). This resulted in significantly lower carbon and sulfur metabolism capabilities in the HDPE biofilm than in the other two pipes. The stability of wastewater quality during the transmission process in HDPE pipes reduces the metabolic generation of toxic and harmful gases within the pipes, favoring the preservation of carbon sources for sewer systems. This study reveals the variations in carbon and sulfur metabolism in wastewater pipe systems influenced by pipe materials and provides insights for designing future sewers.

A new perspective of sediment layering scour and migration under the coupled effects of particle distribution and bio-viscosity-cavitation erosion

The scouring and migration of sediments in sewer systems are the key contributors to overflow pollution. Both physical and biological factors affect the erosion and migration of layered sediments. However, the functional characteristics of these factors and their quantification process still need to be further explored. In this study, the physical form and biological metabolism of the sediment are coupled, and the suspension mechanism under the dual action is proposed systematically and deeply. The influence coefficient of scour initiation was redefined as A^/prime, where the physical factors were particle size and mass, and the biological factors were bio-viscosity and internal cavitation. The bio-viscosity of layered sediment particles is provided by Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS). The slope value of |ΔD/-Δf| (ΔD: Dissipation; Δf: frequency) of surface EPS decreased from 0.489 to 0.315 when Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D) was used to analyse EPS viscosity, indicating that biological activities formed a dense biofilm on the sediment surface and enhanced the bond between particles. Meanwhile, by monitoring the accumulation density of sediments at different depths, it was found that the packing density of the bottom layer decreased from 1.50 to 1.45 g/cm3, which was mainly due to the internal cavitation caused by microorganism consuming organic matrix and releasing H2S and CH4. The delamination difference of EPS results in the uneven change of adhesion between different layers. This, combined with the internal erosion characteristics triggered by microbial stratified metabolism, collectively constitutes the biological effects on the sediment structure. Finally, the coupling mechanism of particle distribution and bio-viscous-cavitation erosion was formed, and the correctness of the formula was verified by repeated experiments, which proved the agreement between the theory and the practice and provided a scientific method for systematically analysing the erosion and migration law of sediment in the sewer system.

Deciphering carbon emissions in urban sewer networks: Bridging urban sewer networks with city-wide environmental dynamics

As urbanization accelerates, understanding and managing carbon emissions from urban sewer networks have become crucial for sustainable urban water cycles. This review examines the factors influencing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within urban sewage systems, analyzing the complex effects between water quality, hydrodynamics, and sewer infrastructure on GHG production and emission processes. It reveals significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity in GHG emissions, particularly under long-term scenarios where flow rates and temperatures exhibit strong impacts and correlations. Given the presence of fugitive and dissolved potential GHGs, standardized monitoring and accounting methods are deemed essential. Advanced modeling techniques emerge as crucial tools for large-scale carbon emission prediction and management. The review identifies that traditional definitions and computational frameworks for carbon emission boundaries fail to fully consider the inherent heterogeneity of sewers and the dynamic changes and impacts of multi-source pollution within the sewer system during the urban water cycle. This includes irregular fugitive emissions, the influence of stormwater systems, climate change, geographical features, sewer design, and the impacts of food waste and antibiotics. Key strategies for emission management are discussed, focusing on the need for careful consideration of approaches that might inadvertently increase global emissions, such as ventilation, chemical treatments, and water management practices. The review advocates for an overarching strategy that encompasses a holistic view of carbon emissions, stressing the importance of refined emission boundary definitions, novel accounting practices, and comprehensive management schemes in line with the water treatment sector's move towards carbon neutrality. It champions the adoption of interdisciplinary, technologically advanced solutions to mitigate pollution and reduce carbon emissions, emphasizing the importance of integrating cross-scale issues and other environmentally friendly measures in future research directions.

Non-mercury methylating microbial taxa are integral to understanding links between mercury methylation and elemental cycles in marine and freshwater sediments

The goal of this study was to explore the role of non-mercury (Hg) methylating taxa in mercury methylation and to identify potential links between elemental cycles and Hg methylation. Statistical approaches were utilized to investigate the microbial community and biochemical functions in relation to methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in marine and freshwater sediments. Sediments were collected from the methylation zone (top 15 cm) in four Hg-contaminated sites. Both abiotic (e.g., sulfate, sulfide, iron, salinity, total organic matter, etc.) and biotic factors (e.g., hgcA, abundances of methylating and non-methylating taxa) were quantified. Random forest and stepwise regression were performed to assess whether non-methylating taxa were significantly associated with MeHg concentration. Co-occurrence and functional network analyses were constructed to explore associations between taxa by examining microbial community structure, composition, and biochemical functions across sites. Regression analysis showed that approximately 80% of the variability in sediment MeHg concentration was predicted by total mercury concentration, the abundances of Hg methylating taxa, and the abundances of the non-Hg methylating taxa. The co-occurrence networks identified Paludibacteraceae and Syntrophorhabdaceae as keystone non Hg methylating taxa in multiple sites, indicating the potential for syntrophic interactions with Hg methylators. Strong associations were also observed between methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria, which were likely symbiotic associations. The functional network results suggested that non-Hg methylating taxa play important roles in sulfur respiration, nitrogen respiration, and the carbon metabolism-related functions methylotrophy, methanotrophy, and chemoheterotrophy. Interestingly, keystone functions varied by site and did not involve carbon- and sulfur-related functions only. Our findings highlight associations between methylating and non-methylating taxa and sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen cycles in sediment methylation zones, with implications for predicting and understanding the impact of climate and land/sea use changes on Hg methylation.

Enhancement of medium-chain fatty acids production from sludge anaerobic fermentation liquid under moderate sulfate reduction

In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the production of excess sludge. Chain-elongation (CE) fermentation presents a promising approach for carbon resource recovery from sludge, enabling the transformation of carbon into medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). However, the impact of sulfate, commonly presents in sludge, on the CE process remains largely unexplored. In this study, batch tests for CE process of sludge anaerobic fermentation liquid (SAFL) under different SCOD/SO42- ratios were performed. The moderate sulfate reduction under the optimum SCOD/SO42- of 20:1 enhanced the n-caproate production, giving the maximum n-caproate concentration, selectivity and production rate of 5.49 g COD/L, 21.4% and 4.87 g COD/L/d, respectively. The excessive sulfate reduction under SCOD/SO42- ≤ 5 completely inhibited the CE process, resulting in almost no n-caproate generation. The variations in n-caproate production under different conditions of SCOD/SO42- were all well fitted with the modified Gompertz kinetic model. Alcaligenes and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 were the dominant genus-level biomarkers under moderate sulfate reduction (SCOD/SO42- = 20), which enhanced the n-caproate production by increasing the generation of acetyl-CoA and the hydrolysis of difficult biodegradable substances in SAFL. The findings presented in this work elucidate a strategy and provide a theoretical framework for the further enhancement of MCFAs production from excess sludge.

Sulfate reduction behavior in response to landfill dynamic pressure changes

During the long-term stabilization process of landfills, the pressure field undergoes constant changes. This study constructed dynamic pressure changes scenarios of high-pressure differentials (0.6 MPa) and low-pressure differentials (0.2 MPa) in the landfill pressure field at 25 °C and 50 °C, and investigated the sulfate reduction behavior in response to landfill dynamic pressure changes. The results showed that the pressurization or depressurization of high-pressure differentials caused more significant differences in sulfate reduction behavior than that of low-pressure differentials. The lowest hydrogen sulfide (H2S) release peak concentration under pressurization was only 29.67% of that under initial pressure condition; under depressurization, the highest peak concentration of H2S was up to 21,828 mg m-3, posing a serious risk of H2S pollution. Microbial community and correlation analysis showed that pressure had a negative impact on the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) community, and the SRB community adjusted its structure to adapt to pressure changes. Specific SRBs were further enriched with pressure changes. Differential H2S release behavior under pressure changes in the 25 °C pressure environments were mediated by Desulfofarcimen (ASV343) and Desulfosporosinus (ASV1336), while Candidatus Desulforudis (ASV24) and Desulfohalotomaculum (ASV94) played a key role at 50 °C. This study is helpful in the formulation of control strategies for the source of odor pollution in landfills.

Diversity, composition, metabolic characteristics, and assembly process of the microbial community in sewer system at the early stage

Sewer systems play vital roles in wastewater treatment facilities, and the microbial communities contribute significantly to the transformation of domestic wastewater. Therefore, this study conducted a 180-day experiment on a sewer system and utilized the high-throughput sequencing technology to characterize the microbial communities. Additionally, community assembly analysis was performed to understand the early-stage dynamics within the sewer system. The results demonstrated that the overall diversity of microbial communities exhibited fluctuations as the system progressed. The dominant phyla observed were Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria, accounting for over 85.4% of the total relative abundances. At the genus level, bacteria associated with fermentation displayed a high relative abundance, particularly during days 75 to 180. A random-forest machine-learning model identified a group of microbes that confirmed the substantial contribution of fermentation. During the process of fermentation, microorganisms predominantly utilized propionate formation as the main pathway for acidogenesis, followed by acetate and butyrate formation. In terms of nitrogen and sulfur cycles, dissimilatory nitrate reduction and assimilatory sulfate reduction played significant roles. Furthermore, stochastic ecological processes had a dominant effect during the experiment. Dispersal limitation primarily governed the assembly process almost the entire experimental period, indicating the strong adaptability and metabolic plasticity of microorganisms in response to environmental variations. This experiment provides valuable insights into the metabolic mechanisms and microbial assembly associated with sewer systems.

High-throughput absolute quantification sequencing reveals the adaptive succession and assembly pattern of plastisphere communities in municipal sewer systems: Influence of environmental factors and microplastic polymer types

Municipal sewer systems have received increasing attention due to the magnitude of the microplastic stock and its potential ecological impacts. However, as a critical aspect of the adverse impacts, little is known about the plastisphere that forms in these engineered environments. Using high-throughput absolute quantification sequencing, we conducted a systemic study combining field survey and laboratory batch test to explain the general plastisphere pattern and the role of environmental and polymeric factors in driving plastisphere succession and assembly there. We demonstrated the capacity of microplastics to support high levels of microbial colonization, increasing by 8.7-56.0 and 1.26-5.62 times at field and laboratory scales, respectively, despite the less diverse communities hosted in the resulting plastisphere. Sediment communities exhibited higher diversity but greater loss of specific operational taxonomic units in their plastisphere than in the wastewater. The former plastisphere had primarily an enhanced methanogenesis-oriented metabolic network linked to hydrolysis fermentation, hydrogen-producing acetogenesis, and denitrification, while the latter had a pronounced niche partitioning and competitive interaction network. Exogenous substrate flux and composition were key in stimulating plastisphere community growth and succession. Furthermore, the high nitrogen baseline facilitated alternative niche formation for plastisphere nitrifiers and denitrifiers, and the plastisphere pathogens associated with denitrification and plastic biodegradation functions increased significantly. The aerobic state also promoted a 1.71 times higher colonizer load and a denser interaction pattern than the anaerobic state. Selective filtering by polymers was evident: polyethylene supported higher plastisphere diversity than polypropylene. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms driving colonizer loads and the adaptive succession and assembly of the plastisphere in such a typically hydrodynamic and highly contaminated environment. The results help to fill the knowledge gap in understanding the potential role of microplastics in shaping the microecology of sewers and increasing health risks and substrate loss during sewer transfer.

The role of microbiomes in gastrointestinal cancers: new insights

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers constitute more than 33% of new cancer cases worldwide and pose a considerable burden on public health. There exists a growing body of evidence that has systematically recorded an upward trajectory in GI malignancies within the last 5 to 10 years, thus presenting a formidable menace to the health of the human population. The perturbations in GI microbiota may have a noteworthy influence on the advancement of GI cancers; however, the precise mechanisms behind this association are still not comprehensively understood. Some bacteria have been observed to support cancer development, while others seem to provide a safeguard against it. Recent studies have indicated that alterations in the composition and abundance of microbiomes could be associated with the progression of various GI cancers, such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, and esophageal cancers. Within this comprehensive analysis, we examine the significance of microbiomes, particularly those located in the intestines, in GI cancers. Furthermore, we explore the impact of microbiomes on various treatment modalities for GI cancer, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy. Additionally, we delve into the intricate mechanisms through which intestinal microbes influence the efficacy of GI cancer treatments.

Assessing the effect of sulfate on the anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled with Cr(VI) bioreduction by sludge characteristic and metagenomics analysis

Methane-driven hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) has attracted much attention. However, whether the presence of sulfate (SO42-) affects the reduction of Cr(VI) is still lacking in systematic studies. This study involved constructing a MFC-granular sludge (MFC-GS) coupling system with dissolved methane (CH4) was used as the electron donor to investigate the effect of SO42- on Cr(VI) bioreduction, sludge characteristic, and functional metabolic mechanisms. When the SO42- concentration was 10 mg/L, the average removal rate of Cr(VI) in the anaerobic stage decreased to the lowest value (22.25 ± 2.06%). Adding 10 mg/L SO42- obviously inhibited the electrochemical performance of the system. Increasing SO42- concentration weakened the fluorescence peaks of tryptophan and aromatic proteins in the extracellular polymeric substance of sludge. Under the influence of SO42-, Methanothrix_soehngenii decreased from 14.44% to 5.89%. The relative abundance of methane metabolic was down-regulated from 1.47% to 0.98%, while the sulfur metabolic was up-regulated from 0.09% to 0.21% when SO42- was added. These findings provided some reference for the treatment of wastewater containing Cr(VI) and SO42- complex pollutants in the MFC-GS coupling system.

Effects of flow rate and wastewater concentration on the transformation of nitrogen in sediment-water system of sewage pipelines

In this work, the transformation law of nitrogen in sediment-water system under different flow rates and wastewater concentrations were investigated in a simulated sewage pipeline system. Results showed that the different flow rates and wastewater concentrations in the pipeline caused differences in microbial community in sediments and nitrogen transformation. When the flow rate increased from 0.05 to 0.2 m/s, the scouring effect was enhanced, resulting in higher concentrations of NH4 + -N and NO3 - -N in the overlying water. At 0.2 m/s, the relative abundance of Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 in sediments was higher, resulting in a greater conversion of amino acid nitrogen (AAN) to NH4 + -N. Meanwhile, many denitrifying bacteria (Trichococcus, Dechloromonas, norank_f__norank_o__Gaiellales, Thiobacillus) had high relative abundance in the sediments, and the denitrification process was common. When the wastewater concentration was high, the nitrification reaction was great in overlying and interstitial water. Moreover, the ammoniation process was great in the sediments, and the variation flux of AAN was large (remarkably reduced). PRACTITIONER POINTS: AAN transformed to NH4 + -N in sediment under different flow rate and concentration. Scouring was enhanced at 0.2 m/s, increasing nitrogen contents in overlying water. Difference in microbial community led to more AAN conversion to NH4 + -N at 0.2 m/s. The ammoniation process was greater in sediment at a high concentration of sewage. NH4 + -N migrated from overlying water to sediment at a high concentration of sewage.

Toward an intensive understanding of sewer sediment prokaryotic community assembly and function

Prokaryotic communities play important roles in sewer sediment ecosystems, but the community composition, functional potential, and assembly mechanisms of sewer sediment prokaryotic communities are still poorly understood. Here, we studied the sediment prokaryotic communities in different urban functional areas (multifunctional, commercial, and residential areas) through 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Our results suggested that the compositions of prokaryotic communities varied significantly among functional areas. Desulfomicrobium, Desulfovibrio, and Desulfobacter involved in the sulfur cycle and some hydrolytic fermentation bacteria were enriched in multifunctional area, while Methanospirillum and Methanoregulaceae, which were related to methane metabolism were significantly discriminant taxa in the commercial area. Physicochemical properties were closely related to overall community changes (p < 0.001), especially the nutrient levels of sediments (i.e., total nitrogen and total phosphorus) and sediment pH. Network analysis revealed that the prokaryotic community network of the residential area sediment was more complex than the other functional areas, suggesting higher stability of the prokaryotic community in the residential area. Stochastic processes dominated the construction of the prokaryotic community. These results expand our understanding of the characteristics of prokaryotic communities in sewer sediment, providing a new perspective for studying sewer sediment prokaryotic community structure.

Transformation of sulfur in the sediment-water system of the sewage pipeline under different hydraulic retention time

Transformation of sulfur in sewage pipeline was affected by water flow, and the transformation laws at different locations in the sediment-water system were different. This work studied the changes of sulfur in sediments, sewage, and upper space of the sewage pipeline, analyzed the differences in microbial community under different hydraulic retention time (HRT) and depth, and focused on the transformation law of sulfur. Results showed that sulfate and sulfide concentrations in sewage were higher than those in sediments under anaerobic conditions. Moreover, sulfate and sulfide concentrations in sediments decreased with depth. When HRT decreased from 3 h to 1 h, H2S concentration increased evidently, whereas sulfate concentration decreased in the sewage and sediment, and sulfide concentration increased in sewage and surface sediment. Those differences were related to the relative abundances of the two microbial communities. The relative abundances of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), such as Desulfobacter, Desulfovibrio, and Desulfomicrobium, were higher in surface sediment. Correspondingly, those of Thiobacillus, Bacillus, and other sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) and Smithella were higher in deep sediment. The decrease of HRT might worsen the mass transfer effect of dissolved oxygen, thereby increasing the production rate of sulfur and causing H2S to easily escape from sewage.

Sulfate reduction behavior in response to changing of pressure coupling with temperature inside landfill

The behavior of sulfate reduction, which was the source of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) odor, was investigated under changing pressure and temperature conditions inside landfills. The results showed that the release of H2S and methyl mercaptan (MM) was significantly inhibited at 25 °C and 50 °C under pressure, and the highest H2S and MM concentrations released were only 0.82 %-1.30 % and 1.87 %-4.32 % of atmospheric pressure, respectively. Analysis of the microbial community structure and identification of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) revealed that temperature significantly altered the microbial community in the landfill environment, while pressure inhibited some bacteria and induced the growth and reproduction of specific bacteria. Key SRB (Desulfosporosinus-ASV212, Desulfitibacter-ASV1744) mediated differentiated sulfate reduction behavior in the pressure-bearing environment at 25 °C, while key SRB (Dethiobacter-ASV177, Desulfitibacter-ASV2355 and ASV316) were involved at 50 °C. This study provides a theoretical basis for the formulation of landfill gas management and control strategies.

Surfactant enhances anaerobic fermentative hydrogen sulfide production: Changes in sulfur-containing organics structure and microbial community

The presence of surfactants in waste activated sludge (WAS) system is generally regarded as beneficial to sludge treatment such as enhancing sludge dewatering and improving value-added fermentation products generation. However, in this study, it was firstly found that sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS, a typical surfactant) obviously increased toxic hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas production from WAS anaerobic fermentation at environmentally relevant concentrations. Experimental results showed that H₂S production from WAS significantly increased from 53.24 × 10^-3 to 111.25 × 10^-3 mg/g volatile suspended solids (VSS) when SDBS level increased from 0 to 30 mg/g total suspended solid (TSS). It was found that SDBS presence destroyed WAS structure and enhanced sulfur containing organics release. SDBS reduced the proportion of α-helix structure, damaged disulfide bridges and protein conformation, and effectively destroyed protein structure. SDBS promoted sulfur containing organics degradation and provided more readily hydrolyzed micro-molecule organics for sulfide production. Microbial analysis showed that SDBS addition enhanced the abundance of functional genes encoding protease, ATP-binding cassette transporters, and amino acids lyase, enhanced the activities and abundance of hydrolytic microbes, thus increased sulfide production from the hydrolysis of sulfur containing organics. Compared with the control, 30 mg/g TSS SDBS increased organic sulfurs hydrolysis and amino acids degradation by 47.1 % and 63.5 %, respectively. Key genes analysis further showed that SDBS addition promoted sulfate transport system and dissimilatory sulfate reduction. SDBS presence also lowered fermentation pH, promoted the chemical equilibrium transformation of sulfide, thus increased H₂S gas release.

Understanding the role of graphene oxide in affecting PAHs biodegradation by microorganisms: An integrated analysis using 16SrRNA, metatranscriptomic, and metabolomic approaches

Graphene oxide (GO)-promoted microbial degradation technology is considered an important strategy to eliminate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment; however, the mechanism by which GO affects microbial degradation of PAHs has not been fully studied. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the effect of GO-microbial interaction on PAHs degradation at the microbial community structure, community gene expression, and metabolic levels using multi-omics combined technology. We treated PAHs-contaminated soil samples with different concentrations of GO and analyzed the soil samples for microbial diversity after 14 and 28 days. After a short exposure, GO reduced the diversity of soil microbial community but increased potential degrading microbial abundance, promoting PAHs biodegradation. This promotion effect was further influenced by the GO concentration. In a short period of time, GO upregulated the expression of genes involved in microbial movement (flagellar assembly), bacterial chemotaxis, two-component system, and phosphotransferase system in the soil microbial community and increased the probability of microbial contact with PAHs. Biosynthesis of amino acids and carbon metabolism of microorganisms were accelerated, thereby increasing the degradation of PAHs. With the extension of time, the degradation of PAHs stagnated, which may be due to the weakened stimulation of GO on microorganisms. The results showed that screening specific degrading microorganisms, increasing the contact area between microorganisms and PAHs, and prolonging the stimulation of GO on microorganisms were important means to improve the biodegradation efficiency of PAHs in soil. This study elucidates how GO affects microbial PAHs degradation and provides important insights for the application of GO-assisted microbial degradation technology.

Effect of exogenous CaO addition on H2S production from waste activated sludge and its influence mechanism

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) production from waste activated sludge (WAS) is the main reason for odor emission during anaerobic fermentation system. CaO has been reported to effectively improve the resources recovery of WAS, but its potential effect on H₂S production in anaerobic fermentation process remains unrecognized. In present study, it was found that the addition of 60 mg/g VSS CaO greatly inhibited H₂S production and the maximum yield of H₂S was 60.1 ± 1.8% lower than the control. Mechanism investigation demonstrated that CaO destroyed sludge structure and increased the release of intracellular organic matter with hydrogen bonding networks destroying, but had a mild effect on the transformation of sulfur containing organic matters and inorganic sulfate reduction. Additionally, the enhancement in H⁺ and S^2- consumption by alkaline condition and metal ions release was another reason for the inhibition of H₂S production in CaO addition reactors. Furthermore, microbial analysis showed that CaO addition importantly reduced the hydrolysis microorganism, particularly denitrification hydrolytic bacterias (e.g., unclassified_f_Chitinophagaceae and Dechloromonas), sulfate reducing bacterias (SRBs) (e.g., unclassified_c_Deltaproteobacteria and Desulfosarcina) and genes (e.g., PepD, cysN/D, CysH/C and Sir) involved in organic sulfur hydrolysis and sulfate reduction. Results from this study provides theoretical insights into the practical applications of CaO.

Biogas utilization without desulfurization pretreatment in a bioelectrochemical system

Utilizing biogas as a fuel for heating and power generation usually requires desulfurization pretreatment. In this study, the biogas utilization without desulfurization pretreatment in a bioelectrochemical system (BES) was explored. The results showed that the biogas-fueled BES was successfully started up within 36 d and the presence of hydrogen sulfide promoted both methane consumption and electricity generation. The optimal performance (i.e., a methane consumption of 0.523 ± 0.004 mmol/d, a peak voltage of 577 ± 1 mV, a coulomb production of 37.86 ± 0.43C/d, a coulombic efficiency of 9.37 ± 0.06 % and the maximum power density of 2.070 W/m³) was obtained under bicarbonate buffer solution and 40 °C conditions. The addition of 1 mg/L sulfide and 5 mg/L L-cysteine facilitated methane consumption and electricity generation. In the anode biofilm, the dominant bacteria were Sulfurivermis, unclassified_o__Ignavibacteriales and Lentimicrobium, while Methanobacterium, Methanosarcina and Methanothrix were the predominant archaea. Besides, the metagenomics profiles reveal that anaerobic methane oxidation and electricity generation were closely related to sulfur metabolism. These findings provide a novel approach for utilizing biogas without desulfurization pretreatment.

Sulfite altered permanganate effects on acetate-enriched short-chain fatty acids production during sludge anaerobic fermentation

Anaerobic fermentation is a promising method for waste activated sludge (WAS) treatment, but ineffective solubilization and hydrolysis limit its application. The current study examined the function of sodium sulfite (SDS) in potassium permanganate (PP)-conditioned WAS fermentation for short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) biosynthesis. The presence of SDS in the PP system (PP/SDS) reduced the positive effects of PP on total SCFAs yield (2755 versus 3471 mg COD/L), while effectively increasing the proportion of acetate (from 41 to 81 %). Not only did SDS decrease the promoting effects of PP on WAS solubilization and hydrolysis efficiency by 5-42 %, it also shifted microbial metabolic pathways to favor acetate production. In addition, the amino acid metabolism with acetate as end product was enhanced. Moreover, PP/SDS inhibited methanogenesis, resulting in an accumulation of acetate in high quantities. Thus, the current study a provided insight and direction for effective WAS treatment with acetate-enriched SCFAs production.

Anaerobic Degradation of the Invasive Weed Solidago canadensis L. (goldenrod) and Copper Immobilization by a Community of Sulfate-Reducing and Methane-Producing Bacteria

The weed Solidago canadensis L. poses a global threat to the environment as it spreads uncontrollably on roadsides, in forests, fields, meadows, and farmland. Goldenrod emits toxic substances that suppress other plants on the site, displacing wild ones. Thus, goldenrod conquers huge areas very quickly. The use of herbicides and mechanical methods does not solve the problem of the spontaneous spread of goldenrod. On the other hand, many scientists consider goldenrod as a valuable source of biologically active substances: flavonoids, phenolic compounds, vitamins, etc. In this study, we consider Solidago plants as a promising, free (cheap), and renewable substrate for the production of methane gas. The goal of the study was to identify the main patterns of degradation of the Solidago canadensis L. plant by methane-producing and sulfate-reducing bacteria with methane gas production and simultaneous detoxification of toxic copper. The composition of the gas phase was monitored by gas chromatography. The pH and redox potential parameters were determined potentiometrically; metal concentrations were measured by photometry. The concentration of flavonoids, sugars and phenolic compounds in plant biomass was determined according to well-known protocols. As a result of the study, high efficiencies of methane degradation in the Solidago plant and copper detoxification were obtained. Methane yield has reached the value of 68.2 L kg^-1 TS of Solidago canadensis L. biomass. The degradation coefficient (K_d) was also high at 21.4. The Cu(II) was effectively immobilized by methanogens and sulfate reducers during the goldenrod degradation at the initial concentrations of 500 mg L^-1. Thus, a new method of beneficial application of invasive plants was presented. The result confirms the possibility of using methanogenic microorganisms to produce methane gas from invasive weeds and detoxification of toxic metals.

Metabolic hazards of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in sewers

The discharge of personal care products (PPCPs) to sewer systems increased due to the rapid expansion of cities, while PPCPs transformation in sewer and the potential threat to receiving water environments have been rarely revealed. In this study, six PPCPs (antibiotics, generic drugs and personal care products) were added continuously over a 90-day experimental period to investigate the effect of transformation in a pilot sewer. The results showed that the biological metabolism of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants were restricted under the PPCPs stress condition. The genomic detection also confirmed that the diversity of microflora in sewer sediment were obviously decreased with the PPCPs transformation, and the total relative abundance of dominant phylum species (Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria) increased from 67.7% to 94.9%. In addition, principal coordinate analysis and metagenome showed that the two kinds of antibiotics were the most important inducement for the metabolic dysfunction in sewer systems, and led to the increase of functional gene of "Human Disease" (accounted for 0.97%) which could form more harmful metabolites to cause serious exposure hazards. Thus, this investigation provided the insights into the metabolic hazards of PPCPs bioconversions in sewers, which hoped to bring to the forefront of PPCPs emission to sewers by society.

Hydrogen sulphide management in anaerobic digestion: A critical review on input control, process regulation, and post-treatment

Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) in biogas is a problematic impurity that can inhibit methanogenesis and cause equipment corrosion. This review discusses technologies to remove H₂S during anaerobic digestion (AD) via: input control, process regulation, and post-treatment. Post-treatment technologies (e.g. biotrickling filters and scrubbers) are mature with >95% removal efficiency but they do not mitigate H₂S toxicity to methanogens within the AD. Input control (i.e. substrate pretreatment via chemical addition) reduces sulphur input into AD via sulphur precipitation. However, available results showed <75% of H₂S removal efficiency. Microaeration to regulate AD condition is a promising alternative for controlling H₂S formation. Microaeration, or the use of oxygen to regulate the redox potential at around -250 mV, has been demonstrated at pilot and full scale with >95% H₂S reduction, stable methane production, and low operational cost. Further adaptation of microaeration relies on a comprehensive design framework and exchange operational experience for eliminating the risk of over-aeration.

Anaerobic biofilm enriched with an ammonia tolerant methanogenic consortium to improve wastewater treatment in the fishing industry

The digestion efficiency of liquid industrial wastes increases when using bioreactors colonized by microbial biofilms. High concentrations of proteins derived from the fish processing industry lead to the production of ammonia, which inhibits methane production. Two bioreactors were constructed to compare methanogenic activity: one enriched with mMPA (methylaminotrofic methane production archaea) consortia (control bioreactor), and the second with NH₃ tolerant consortia (treatment bioreactor). Ammonia tolerant activity was assessed by applying an ammonia shock (755 mg NH₃/L). Methane production, consumption of total organic carbon (TOC) and the taxonomic composition of bacteria and archaea was evaluated using 16S rDNA in the acclimatization, ammonia shock, and recovery phases.The ammonia shock significantly affected both methane production and the consumption of TOC in the control reactor (p < 0.05) and taxonomical composition of the microbial consortia (OTU). These values remained constant in the treatment reactor. The analysis of biofilm composition showed a predominance of Methanosarcinaceae (Methanomethylovorans sp., and probably two different species of Methanosarcina sp.) in bioreactors. These results demonstrate that using acclimated biofilms enriched with ammonia tolerant methanogens control the inhibitory effect of ammonia on methanogenesis.

The role of pH on sewer corrosion processes and control methods: A review

The production and emission of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in sewer systems is associated with the corrosion of sewer structures and harmful odour. Numerous studies have been conducted to find the best solution to overcome this issue. The pH plays a critical role not only on microbial and chemical processes that are responsible for all processes of corrosion but also on the efficiency of several control methods. This paper first critically reviews the literature on the interplay between pH and various chemical and microbial in-sewer processes, followed by a review of the control methods that depend on pH or indirectly alter pH. The paper argues that proper evaluation of each method should include the impact the control method has on downstream processes. This paper concludes the raising of pH has several benefits but is operationally difficult to implement. It also emphasises single control method may not be as efficient as combination of one or two methods in controlling the production and emission of H₂S. Finally, the research requirements and future directions in relation to emerging and potential methods that are not heavily reliant on pH control are discussed.

Mechanism of microbial metabolic responses and ecological system conversion under different nitrogen conditions in sewers

Nitrogen plays a central role in the sewer ecosystem, and the bioconversion of nitrogen can significantly affect bioreactions in sewers. However, the mechanisms underlying the involvement of nitrogen-associated pollutants in sewer ecosystems remain unknown. In this study, the effects of two typical nitrogen ratios (organic/inorganic nitrogen: 7/3 (Group A) and 3/7 (Group B)) on carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur bioconversions were investigated in a pilot sewer. The distribution of amino acids, such as proline, glycine and methionine, was significantly different between Groups A and B, and carbon-associated communities (based on 16S rRNA gene copies) were more prevalent in Group A, while sulfur and nitrogen-associated communities were more prevalent in Group B. To explore the effect of nitrogen on microbial response mechanisms, metagenomics-based methods were used to investigate the roles of amino acids involved in carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur bioconversion in sewers. Proline, glycine, and tyrosine in Group A promoted the expression of genes associated with cell membrane transport and increased the rate of protein synthesis, which stimulated the enrichment of carbon-associated communities. The transmembrane transport of higher concentrations of alanine and methionine in Group B was essential for cell metabolism and nutrient transport, thereby enriching nitrogen and sulfur-associated communities. In this investigation, insights into carbon, nitrogen and sulfur bioconversions in sewer ecosystems were revealed, significantly improving the understanding of the sewer ecosystem within a community context.
