Hydrophobic nano sponge for efficient removal of diesel fuel from water and soil

Diesel fuel (DF)-contamination remediation has aroused increasing concern in environmental field. In our work, nano sponge was modified by silylation of amino silicon oil (ASO) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to obtain hydrophobic nano sponge (SPAA). SPAA possessed a micro/nano network structure and could efficiently adsorb DF through hydrophobic polysiloxane group. The results revealed that SPAA could effectively remove DF and control its migration in water and soil under various conditions. Importantly, SPAA could inhibit the harmful effect of DF on the growth of plants, earthworms, and fish. Therefore, this work provides a promising and low-cost approach for removal of DF from water and soil, which might have a potential application value.

Application of a magnesium/co-solvent system for the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their oxygenated derivatives in a spiked soil

This study evaluates the capability, efficacy and practicality of a combined approach based on solvent extraction and chemical reduction to simultaneously degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygenated derivatives (OPAHs) in spiked soil. The spiked soil was washed using a composite organic solvent consisting of ethanol and ethyl lactate (1:1, v/v) and then degradation of the extracted contaminants using zero-valent magnesium. The extraction conditions were optimized at 25 °C with solvent-soil ratio of 2:1 (v/w) and the ensuing degradation efficiency ranged from 79% to 88% for the OPAHs, and 66% to 87% for the PAHs after 24 h of reaction at pH of 6.1. The reductive degradation of the spiked contaminants followed pseudo-first-order kinetics; however, comparing the kinetic results of this study to soil-free studies, the degradation rates are significantly reduced. It can be inferred that extracted organic or inorganic components from the soil medium hinder the degradation process, possibly by reducing the reactivity of the activated metal. Furthermore, to our understanding, this study is the first report on the simultaneous degradation of these priority pollutants and their oxygenated derivatives. The experimental results encourage the application of this magnesium/co-solvent system for future pilot-scale remediation studies.

Mercapturic acids derived from toluene in rat urine samples: identification and measurement by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Toluene is one of the most widely used CMR chemicals in industry. Worker exposure to this compound is regulated in France, but new, more sensitive methods are required to effectively monitor this exposure. A gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method was developed and fully validated for the simultaneous determination of urinary toluene mercapturic acids derived from side chain and ring oxidation, i.e., benzylmercapturic acid and the three isomers o-, m- and p-toluylmercapturic acids, respectively. The method involves a simple and efficient two-step preparation procedure consisting of liquid-liquid extraction of the urinary acids followed by a microwave-assisted esterification of the isolated compounds using 2-propanol. The method meets all the required validation criteria: high selectivity, intra-day and inter-day precision ranges between 1.0 % and 12.4 %, with close to 100 % recovery. Linearity has been shown over the reduced concentration range 0.03-0.5 mg/L whereas a multiplicative model (ln-ln transformation) had to be used to describe the full range of concentrations 0.03-20 mg/L. The limits of detection for the four analytes, ranging from 2.8 to 5.5 μg/L, made the method suitable for their identification and quantification in urine from rats inhaling toluene in the 2 to 200 ppm concentration range. All urine samples from exposed rats contained measurable amounts of all metabolites. This is the first time that o- and m-toluylmercapturic acids have been shown to occur. Our results confirm the hypothesis that toluene mercapturic acids derived from ring oxidation exist in three forms.

Modeling the influence of ethanol on the adsorption and desorption of selected BTEX compounds on bentonite and kaolin

The influence of ethanol on the adsorption capacity and desorption kinetics of benzene and toluene on bentonite and kaolin through modeling and experimental study was investigated. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of both soils for the target compounds decreased as ethanol content increased. As ethanol content increased from 0 to 50%, the adsorption capacity for benzene and toluene on bentonite decreased from 3.6 to 0.54 microg(n+1)/(L(n) x g) (by 85%) and 1.91 to 0.01 microg(n+1)/(L(n) x g) (by 99.5%), respectively. For benzene and toluene adsorption on kaolin, the adsorption capacity decreased by 86.5% (from 0.26 to 0.04 microg(n+1)/(L(n) x g) and 98.2% (from 0.13 to 0.002 microg(n+1)/(L(n) x g)), respectively, as ethanol content increased from 0 to 50%. In addition, the desorption rate of benzene and toluene from bentonite decreased by about one order of magnitude as the ethanol increased from 0 to 25% and 0 to 50%, respectively. It can be inferred that ethanol could affect the effectiveness of natural attenuation processes that rely on adsorption to soils as a containment technique for benzene and toluene by retarding the adsorption to soils and remobilizing compounds that had already been adsorbed to soils.

Infiltration characteristics of non-aqueous phase liquids in undisturbed loessal soil cores

The widespread contamination of soils and aquifers by non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL), such as crude oil, poses serious environmental and health hazards globally. Understanding the infiltration characteristics of NAPL in soil is crucial in mitigating or remediating soil contamination. The infiltration characteristics of crude and diesel oils into undisturbed loessal soil cores, collected in polymethyl methacrylate cylindrical columns, were investigated under a constant fluid head (3 cm) of either crude oil or diesel oil. The infiltration rate of both crude and diesel oils decreased exponentially as wetting depth increased with time. Soil core size and bulk density both had significant effects on NAPL infiltration through the undisturbed soil cores; a smaller core size or a greater bulk density could reduce oil penetration to depth. Compacting soil in areas susceptible to oil spills may be an effective stratage to reduce contamination. The infiltration of NAPL into soil cores was spatially anisotropic and heterogeneous, thus recording the data at four points on the soil core is a good stratage to improve the accuracy of experimental results. Our results revealed that crude and diesel oils, rather than their components, have a practical value for remediation of contaminated loessal soils.

Viscosity of high-alcohol content fuel blends with water: subsurface contaminant transport implications

In the United States, a gasoline fuel blend with alcohol volume fractions of 85% or more is considered (among other fuels) an alternative fuel. As the popularity and usage of high-alcohol content gasoline fuel blends increase, subsurface contamination from these fuels will be of great environmental concern. An important parameter governing the movement of these contaminants in unsaturated porous media is the liquid viscosity. In this study, five sets of experiments are conducted to determine viscosity variations of (a) blends of 15% gasoline with various alcohol mixtures, and (b) mixtures of high-alcohol content gasoline fuel blends with various volume fractions of water. The three alcohols considered in this study are ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol. The viscosity of each liquid mixture is observed using a modified falling-ball viscometer.
