From TBT to booster biocides: Levels and impacts of antifouling along coastal areas of Panama

Subacute tributyltin exposure alters the development and morphology of mammary glands in association with CYP19A1 expression in female rats

Tributyltin (TBT) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) related to reproductive dysfunctions. However, few studies have investigated the effects of TBT exposure on mammary gland development. Thus, we assessed whether subacute TBT exposure causes irregularities in mammary gland development. We administered TBT (100 and 1,000 ng/kg/day for 30 days) to female rats from postnatal day (PND) 25 to PND 55, and mammary gland development, morphology, inflammation, collagen deposition, and protein expression were evaluated. Abnormal mammary gland development was observed in both TBT groups. Specifically, TBT exposure reduced the number of terminal end buds (TEBs), type 1 (AB1) alveolar buds, and type 2 (AB2) alveolar buds. An increase in the lobule and differentiation (DF) 2 score was found in the mammary glands of TBT rats. TBT exposure increased mammary gland blood vessels, mast cell numbers, and collagen deposition. Additionally, both TBT rats exhibited intraductal hyperplasia and TEB-like structures. An increase in estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), progesterone receptor (PR), and cytochrome P450 family 19 subfamily A member 1 (CYP19A1) - positive cells was observed in the mammary glands of TBT rats. A strong negative correlation was observed between CYP19A1- positive cells and TEB number. In addition, CYP19A1 - positive cells were positively correlated with mammary gland TEB-like structure, ductal hyperplasia, inflammation, and collagen deposition. Thus, these data suggest that TBT exposure impairs mammary gland development through the modulation of CYP19A1 signaling pathways in female rats.

Update on the status of the contamination by organotin compounds in sediment of Nuevo Gulf, Argentina. Insights from field and experimental studies

Organotin compounds are persistent pollutants and are considered chemicals of high environmental concern. In the present study, the distribution and degradation of tributyltin were evaluated in field sediments and through an ex situ experiment. For this, sediment samples from two locations were analysed: Luis Piedrabuena Harbour, with higher maritime traffic, and Cerro Avanzado, which receives less impact from anthropogenic activities. The results indicated that pollution levels at Luis Piedrabuena Harbour have decreased compared with studies performed 9 years ago for the same area. On the contrary, traces of organotin compounds have been found for the first time at Cerro Avanzado. Moreover, the butyltin degradation index indicated that organotin compounds undergo an advanced degradation process in the collected samples at both sites. Ex situ experiments revealed a limited capacity of sediments to retain tributyltin, and suggested an active role of bioturbation activity in the degradation of these compounds. In addition, visualisation using chemometric techniques (principal components analysis) allowed a simpler analysis of two sediment characteristics: the degree of contamination and the degradation levels of organotin compounds.

Transcriptomics-based analysis reveals the nephrotoxic effects of triphenyltin (TPT) on SD rats by affecting RAS, AQPs and lipid metabolism

Triphenyltin (TPT) is a class of organotin compounds that are extensively used in industry and agriculture. They have endocrine-disrupting effects and cause severe environmental contamination. Pollutants may accumulate in the kidneys and cause pathological complications. However, the mechanism of TPT's toxicological effects on the kidney remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the toxic effects and mechanism of action of TPT exposure on renal impairment in rats. Male SD rats were divided into four groups: the Ctrl group (control group), TPT-L group (0.5 mg/kg/d), TPT-M group (1 mg/kg/d), and TPT-H group (2 mg/kg/d). After 28 days of exposure to TPT, we observed the morphology and structure of kidney tissue using HE, PASM, and Masson staining. We also detected serum biochemical indexes, performed transcriptome sequencing of rat kidney tissue using RNA-seq. Furthermore, protein expression levels were measured through immunohistochemistry and gene expression levels were determined using RT-qPCR. The study results indicated a decrease in kidney weight and relative kidney weight after 28 days of exposure to TPT. Additionally, TPT caused damage to kidney structure and function, as evidenced by HE staining, PASM staining, and serum biochemical tests. Transcriptomics identified 352 DEGs, and enrichment analyses revealed that TPT exposure primarily impacted the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). The expression levels of water channel proteins were reduced, and the expression levels of RAS and lipid metabolism-related genes (Mme, Ace, Fasn, Cyp4a8, Cpt1b and Ppard) were significantly decreased in the TPT-treated group. In summary, exposure to TPT may impair renal structure and function in rats by affecting RAS, AQPs, and lipid metabolism.

Current Status of Antifouling Biocides Contamination in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan

A monitoring survey of antifouling biocides was conducted in the Harima Nada Sea and Osaka Bay of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan to assess contamination by organotin (OT) compounds and alternative biocides. The concentrations of tributyltin (TBT) compounds in surface water ranged from 1.0 to 2.8 ng/L, and the detected TBT concentrations in the bottom water layer were higher than those in the surface water. The concentrations of TBT compounds in sediment samples ranged from 2.0 to 28 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively. The concentrations of alternative biocides in the water and sediment were lower than those before the banning of TBT by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Although triphenyltin (TPT) compounds were not detected in water samples, TPT compounds were detected in the range of < 0.1-2700 ng/g dw in sediment samples. Their concentrations in the water samples were as follows: diuron, < 1-53 ng/L; Sea-Nine 211, < 1-1.8 ng/L; Irgarol 1051, < 1-4.0 ng/L; dichlofluanid, < 1-343 ng/L; and chlorothalonil, < 1-1 ng/L, and the ranges of these alternative compounds in sediment samples were diuron, 32-488 ng/g dw; Sea-Nine 211, 47-591 ng/g dw; Irgarol, 33-128 ng/g dw; dichlofluanid, 67-8038 ng/g dw; and chlorothalonil, 31-2975 ng/g dw. Thus, the OTs and alternative biocides have still been detected in water and sediment samples from closed sea areas.

Contaminant occurrence, water quality criteria and tiered ecological risk assessment in water: A case study of antifouling biocides in the Qiantang River and its estuary, Eastern China

Antifouling biocides may cause adverse effects on non-target species. This study aims to determine the distribution, sources, and ecological risks of antifouling biocides in the surface waters of the Qiantang River and its estuary in eastern China. The concentrations of total antifouling biocides were ranged from 12.9 to 215 ng/L for all water samples. Atrazine, diuron and tributyltin were the major compounds in the water bodies of the study area. The acute and chronic toxicity criteria for tributyltin, diuron and atrazine were derived for freshwater and saltwater, respectively, based on the species sensitivity distribution approach. The freshwater and saltwater criteria were slightly different, and the toxicity to aquatic organisms could be summarized as tributyltin > diuron > atrazine. The graded ecological risk rating showed that the long-term risk of TBT was significant in coastal waters. The pollution of TBT in the Qiantang River deserves further attention.

Chemical diversity and antifouling activity of geniculate calcareous algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) from Brazil

Marine biofouling is a natural process by which many organisms colonize and grow in submerged structures, causing serious economic consequences for the maritime industry. Geniculate calcareous algae (GCA; Corallinales, Rhodophyta) produce bioactive secondary metabolites and are a promise for new antifouling compounds. Here, we investigated the antifouling activity of four GCA species-Amphiroa beauvoisii, Jania sagittata (formerly Cheilosporum sagittatum), Jania crassa, and Jania prolifera (formerly Amphiroa flabellata)-from the Brazilian coast against macro- and microorganisms. Simultaneously, metabolomic tools were applied to assess the chemical profiles of these seaweeds using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Data analysis by principal component and molecular networking analyses used the global natural products social molecular networking platform (GNPS). Our results showed that all extracts were active against different strains of marine bacteria and that the J. sagittata (JsSI) extract showed the highest percentage of bacterial inhibition. The J. sagittata (JsSI) extract was the most active against the mussel Perna perna, showing 100% byssus inhibition. Regarding toxicity, only the J. crassa (JcP) extract showed a 20% mortality rate. The chemical profiles of the evaluated GCA extracts differed qualitatively and quantitatively. Yet, the steroid (3β)-cholest-5-en-3-ol was the major compound commonly identified in all extracts, with the exception of J. sagittata (JsSI). Moreover, we observed intra- and interspecific chemical variabilities among GCA extracts for the different populations, which could explain their antifouling activity variability. This study contributed new information about the chemical compounds produced by this group of seaweeds and showed its antifouling potential. These GCA species may be the subject of future studies to obtain new bioactive compounds with biotechnological potential in maritime areas.

Transgenerational Effects and Mechanisms of Tributyltin Exposure on Neurodevelopment in the Male Offspring of Rats

This study aimed to investigate the transgenerational effects of tributyltin exposure on rat neurodevelopment in male offspring and the potential mechanisms. Neonatal female rats were exposed to the environmental level of tributyltin and then mated with nonexposed males after sexual maturity to produce the F1 generation. The F1 generation (with primordial germ cell exposure) was mated with nonexposed males to produce nonexposed offspring (the F2 and F3 generations). Neurodevelopmental indicators and behavior were observed for the F1, F2, and F3 generations during postnatal days 1-25 and 35-56, respectively. We found premature eye-opening and delayed visual positioning in newborn F1 rats and anxiety and cognitive deficits in prepubertal F1 male rats. These neurodevelopmental impacts were also observed in F2 and F3 males. Additionally, F1-F3 males exhibited increased serotonin and dopamine levels and a loose arrangement of neurons in the hippocampus. We also observed a reduction in the expression of genes involved in intercellular adhesion and increased DNA methylation of the Dsc3 promoter in F1-F3 males. We concluded that tributyltin exposure led to transgenerational effects on neurodevelopment via epigenetic reprogramming in male offspring. These findings provide insights into the risks of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring from parents exposed to tributyltin.

Evaluating the histomorphological and biochemical changes induced by Tributyltin Chloride on pituitary-testicular axis of adult albino rats and the possible ameliorative role of hesperidin

This study was performed to explore in detail the toxic effects of Tributyltin Chloride (TBT) on the pituitary-testicular axis and the possible amelioration with Hesperidin. Seventy-two adult male albino rats were divided into four groups: Control group (I), TBT-treated group (II), TBT+Hesperidin group (III), and Recovery group (IV). Body and testicular weights were measured. Blood samples were taken to estimate serum levels of testosterone, FSH and LH hormones by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Malondialdehyde (MDA) level was measured in testes homogenates. Tissue samples from the pituitary glands and testes were processed for light, electron microscope examination, and immunohistochemical detection of anti-FSH, and Ki67 proteins. Results showed a statistically significant decrease in testicular weight, serum testosterone, FSH and LH levels and a significant increase in tissue MDA in the TBT group when compared to the control group. TBT treatment caused severe histopathological changes with decreased area percent of PAS-stained basophils, and anti FSH immuno-stained gonadotrophs in the pituitary gland. The testes of group II also showed marked tissue damage, cell loss with decreased epithelial height and decreased number of proliferating spermatogenic cells. Hesperidin supplementation with TBT proved significant amelioration of the previously mentioned parameters in both glands which could improve male fertility. In conclusion: The flavonoid Hesperidin has the potential to protect against the reproductive damage induced by TBT in susceptible individuals.

Water and sediment toxicity and hazard assessment of DCOIT towards neotropical marine organisms

DCOIT is an effective antifouling biocide, which presence in the environment and toxicity towards non-target species has been generating great concern. This study evaluated the waterborne toxicity of DCOIT on marine invertebrates (i.e., survival of brine shrimp Artemia sp., larval development of the sea urchin Echinometra lucunter and the mussel Perna perna), as well as DCOIT-spiked-sediment toxicity on the fecundity rate of the copepod Nitrocra sp. And the mortality of the amphipod Tiburonella viscana. The data outcomes were used to calculate environmental hazards and risks, which were compared to their corresponding values obtained from temperate regions. Waterborne toxicity can be summarized as follows: Artemia sp. (LC_50-48h = 163 (135-169) μg/L), E. lucunter (EC_50-36h = 33.9 (17-65) μg/L), and P. perna (EC_50-48h = 8.3 (7-9) μg/L). For whole-sediment toxicity, metrics were calculated for T. viscana (LC_50-10d = 0.5 (0.1-2.6) μg/g) and Nitrocra sp, (EC_50-10d = 200 (10-480) μg/kg). The DCOIT hazard was assessed for both tropical and non-tropical pelagic organisms. The predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) for tropical species (0.19 μg/L) was 1.7-fold lower than that for non-tropical organisms (0.34 μg/L). In whole-sediment exposures, DCOIT presented a PNEC of 0.97 μg/kg, and the risk quotients (RQs) were >1 for areas with constant input of DCOIT such as ports ship/boatyards, marinas, and maritime traffic zones of Korea, Japan, Spain, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Brazil. The presented data are important for supporting the establishment of policies and regulations for booster biocides worldwide.

3,4-Dioxygenated xanthones as antifouling additives for marine coatings: in silico studies, seawater solubility, degradability, leaching, and antifouling performance

Marine biofouling pollution is a process that impacts ecosystems and the global economy. On the other hand, traditional antifouling (AF) marine coatings release persistent and toxic biocides that accumulate in sediments and aquatic organisms. To understand the putative impact on marine ecosystems of recently described and patented AF xanthones (xanthones 1 and 2), able to inhibit mussel settlement without acting as biocides, several in silico environmental fate predictions (bioaccumulation, biodegradation, and soil absorption) were calculated in this work. Subsequently, a degradation assay using treated seawater at different temperatures and light exposures was conducted for a period of 2 months to calculate their half-life (DT₅₀). Xanthone 2 was found to be non-persistent (DT₅₀ < 60 days) at 50 μM, contrary to xanthone 1 (DT₅₀ > 60 days). To evaluate the efficacy of both xanthones as AF agents, they were blended into four polymeric-based coating systems: polyurethane- and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based marine paints, as well as room-temperature-vulcanizing PDMS- and acrylic-based coatings. Despite their low water solubility, xanthones 1 and 2 demonstrated suitable leaching behaviors after 45 days. Overall, the generated xanthone-based coatings were able to decrease the attachment of the Mytilus galloprovincialis larvae after 40 h. This proof-of-concept and environmental impact evaluation will contribute to the search for truly environmental-friendly AF alternatives.

Toxicity of antifouling biocides on planktonic and benthic neotropical species

Organotin-based (OTs: TBT and TPT) antifouling paints have been banned worldwide, but recent inputs have been detected in tropical coastal areas. However, there is a lack of studies evaluating the toxicity of both legacy and their substitute antifouling booster biocides (e.g., Irgarol and diuron) on neotropical species. Therefore, the acute toxicity of four antifouling biocides (TBT, TPT, Irgarol, and diuron) was investigated using the marine planktonic organisms Acartia tonsa and Mysidopsis juniae, the estuarine tanaid Monokalliapseudes schubarti (water exposure), and the burrowing amphipod Tiburonella viscana (spiked sediment exposure). Results confirmed the high toxicity of the OTs, especially to planktonic species, being about two orders of magnitude higher than Irgarol and diuron. Toxic effects of antifouling compounds were observed at levels currently found in tropical coastal zones, representing a threat to planktonic and benthic invertebrates. Furthermore, deterministic PNEC_{marine sediment} values suggest that environmental hazards in tropical regions may be higher due to the higher sensitivity of tropical organisms. Since regulations on antifouling biocides are still restricted to a few countries, more ecotoxicological studies are needed to derivate environmental quality standards based on realistic scenarios. The present study brings essential contributions regarding the ecological risks of these substances in tropical and subtropical zones.

Tributyltin degrading microbial enzymes: A promising remediation approach

Brazil is one of the countries most impacted along the entire coastline by the presence of tributyltin (TBT), a biocide used in antifouling paints. Despite being banned since 2008, its use is still registered in the country, and it is possible to find recent inputs of this substance in places under the influence of shipyards, marinas, and fishing ports. In this study, a bacterium isolated from TBT-contaminated sediment from Santos and São Vicente Estuarine System (SESS) in Brazil, identified as Achromobacter sp., proved to be resistant to this compound. Furthermore, its crude enzymatic extract presented the ability to reduce up to 25 % of the initial TBT concentration in the liquid phase in 1 h, demonstrating to be a simple, fast, effective procedure and a potential tool for the environmental attenuation of TBT.

Antifouling booster biocides in Latin America and the Caribbean: A 20-year review

This review summarized booster biocides studies from Latin America and the Caribbean during the last two decades. Studies were focused on six countries, with most of them in Brazil. In water and sediment, diuron and Irgarol were the most abundant and frequent biocides, probably due to their former intense use. Antifouling paint particles were also reported and had mainly DCOIT, which is currently the most used booster biocide. Toxicity of individual booster biocides was tested in laboratory, and most effects were related to chlorothalonil, DCOIT, dichlofluanid, and Irgarol, including, but not limited to DNA damage, fertility decrease, and mortality at different trophic levels. This review highlighted the need for further studies on environmental occurrence of booster biocides in Latin America and Caribbean associated to ecotoxicological studies. Such information is essential to determine the potential ecological risks and to create directives regarding safe limits of booster biocides in aquatic systems.

Subacute and low dose of tributyltin exposure leads to brown adipose abnormalities in male rats

Tributyltin (TBT) is an obesogenic endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) linked with several metabolic complications. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is the principal site for thermogenesis, making it a potential target for obesity management and metabolic disease. However, few studies have evaluated TBT effect on BAT function. In this investigation, we assessed whether subacute (15 days) and low dose of TBT exposure (100 ng/kg/day) results in abnormal BAT morphophysiology in adult male rats. Body temperature, BAT morphology, inflammation, oxidative stress, collagen deposition and BAT metabolic gene expression markers were assessed in room temperature (Room, ∼24 ºC) and after cold tolerance test (Cold, ∼4 ºC) conditions. A reduction in body temperature was observed in both Room and Cold conditions in TBT rats, suggesting abnormal BAT thermogenic function. Changes in BAT morphology were observed in TBT rats, with an increase in BAT lipid accumulation, an increase in BAT unilocular adipocyte number and a decrease in BAT multilocular adipocyte number in Room condition. All these parameters were opposite in Cold condition TBT rats, leading to a borderline increase in BAT UCP1 protein expression. An increase in BAT mast cell number was observed in TBT rats in Room condition. An increase in ED1 protein expression (macrophage marker) was observed in TBT rats in Cold condition. Oxidative stress and collagen deposition increased in both Room and Cold conditions in TBT rats. TBT exposure caused a borderline increase in BAT COL1A1 protein expression in Cold condition. Further, strong negative correlations were observed between body temperature and BAT lipid accumulation, and BAT lipid accumulation and multilocular adipocyte number. Thus, these data suggest that TBT exposure impaired BAT morphophysiology through impacts on lipid accumulation, inflammation, fibrosis and oxidative stress in male rats.

Distribution in marine fish and EDI estimation of contaminants of emerging concern by vortex-assisted matrix solid-phase dispersion and HPLC-MS/MS

Due to their persistence or continuous discharge, toxic substances are present in the aquatic environment, and can bioaccumulate and biomagnify in the food web, generating a significant ecological risk and a threat to human health. The present study assess the occurrence and tissue (muscle, liver, stomach and gills) distribution of 59 anthropogenic contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in marine fish from Brazil. A simpler and faster analytical methodology based on vortex-assisted matrix solid-phase dispersion (VA-MSPD) and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed and validated. Limits of quantification ranged from 3.31 to 114 ng g^-1 dw with recovery rates between 60 and 140 % and relative standard deviation below 20 %. The ultraviolet filters 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4HB) (benzophenone-3 metabolite) and benzocaine (Et-PABA), and the antibacterial salicylic acid were frequently accumulated in muscle and liver at concentrations between 39.5 and 21.0 ngg^-1 dw. The determined concentrations resulted to be lower than the tolerable daily intake recommended by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: The Relevant Role of the Theca and Granulosa Cells in the Pathogenesis of the Ovarian Dysfunction

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common heterogeneous endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age. The pathogenesis of PCOS remains elusive; however, there is evidence suggesting the potential contribution of genetic interactions or predispositions combined with environmental factors. Among these, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been proposed to potentially contribute to the etiology of PCOS. Granulosa and theca cells are known to cooperate to maintain ovarian function, and any disturbance can lead to endocrine disorders, such as PCOS. This article provides a review of the recent knowledge on PCOS pathophysiology, the role of granulosa and theca cells in PCOS pathogenesis, and the evidence linking exposure to EDCs with reproductive disorders such as PCOS.

Combining Topography and Chemistry to Produce Antibiofouling Surfaces: A Review

Despite decades of research on the reduction of surface fouling from biomolecules or micro-organisms, the ultimate antibiofouling surface remains undiscovered. The recent covid-19 pandemic strengthened the crucial need for such treatments. Among the numerous approaches that are able to provide surfaces with antibiofouling properties, chemical, biological, and topographical strategies have been implemented for instance in the marine, medical, or food industries. However, many of these methods have a biocidal effect and, with antibioresistance and biocide resistance a growing threat on humanity, strategies based on reducing adsorption of biomolecules and micro-organism are necessary for long-term solutions. Bioinspired strategies, combining both surface chemistry and topography, are currently at the heart of the best innovative and sustainable solutions. The synergistic effect of micro/nanostructuration, together with engineered chemical or biological functionalization is believed to contribute to the development of antibiofouling surfaces. This review aims to present approaches combining hydrophobic or hydrophilic chemistries with a specific topography to avoid biofouling in various industrial environments and healthcare facilities.

Impact of Tralopyril and Triazolyl Glycosylated Chalcone in Human Retinal Cells’ Lipidome

Antifouling (AF) coatings containing booster biocides are used worldwide as one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent the attachment of marine organisms to submerged structures. Nevertheless, many of the commercial biocides, such as Econea® (tralopyril), are toxic in marine environments. For that reason, it is of extreme importance that new efficient AF compounds that do not cause any harm to non-target organisms and humans are designed. In this study, we measured the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of a promising nature-inspired AF compound, a triazolyl glycosylated chalcone (compound 1), in an immortalized human retinal pigment epithelial cell line (hTERT-RPE-1) and compared the results with the commercial biocide Econea®. We also investigated the effects of these biocides on the cellular lipidome following an acute (24 h) exposure using liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF/MS). Our results showed that compound 1 did not affect viability in hTERT-RPE-1 cells at low concentrations (1 μM), in contrast to Econea®, which caused a 40% reduction in cell viability. In total, 71 lipids were found to be regulated upon exposure to 10 µM of both compounds. Interestingly, both compounds induced changes in lipids involved in cell death, membrane modeling, lipid storage, and oxidative stress, but often in opposing directions. In general, Econea® exposure was associated with an increase in lipid concentrations, while compound 1 exposure resulted in lipid depletion. Our study showed that exposure to human cells at sublethal Econea® concentrations results in the modulation of several lipids that are linked to cell death and survival.

The ecotoxicology of marine tributyltin (TBT) hotspots: A review

Tributyltin (TBT) was widely used as a highly efficient biocide in antifouling paints for ship and boat hulls. Eventually, TBT containing paints became globally banned when TBT was found to cause widespread contamination and non-target adverse effects in sensitive species, with induced pseudohermaphroditism in female neogastropods (imposex) being the best-known example. In this review, we address the history and the status of knowledge regarding TBT pollution and marine TBT hotspots, with a special emphasis on the Norwegian coastline. The review also presents a brief update on knowledge of TBT toxicity in various marine species and humans, highlighting the current understanding of toxicity mechanisms relevant for causing endocrine disruption in marine species. Despite observations of reduced TBT sediment concentrations in many marine sediments over the recent decades, contaminant hotspots are still prevalent worldwide. Consequently, efforts to monitor TBT levels and assessment of potential effects in sentinel species being potentially susceptible to TBT in these locations are still highly warranted.

Mexican paradise under threat: The impact of antifouling biocides along the Yucatán Peninsula

Levels of booster biocides (Irgarol, diuron, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid and DCOIT), organotins (TBT, DBT, MBT, TPhT, DPhT and MPhT) and antifouling paint particles (APPs) were assessed in sediments of sites under the influence of maritime activities along the coastal zone of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. Imposex incidence and organotin levels were also evaluated in seven caenogastropod species. The incidence of imposex was detected in five species from sites nearby fishing harbors and marinas, including the first reports to Gemophos tinctus and Melongena bispinosa. Butyltins levels were higher than phenyltins in gastropod tissues, sediments, and APPs. Regarding booster biocides, chlorothalonil was the most frequently detected compound and DCOIT was the most abundant biocide in sediments. DCOIT levels were registered in APPs from fishing harbors and marina areas. In addition, the highest levels of TBT, Irgarol, diuron and DCOIT exceeded the threshold limits set by international sediment quality guidelines, indicating that toxic effects could be expected in some of the studied areas, thus being a potential threat to marine life. Based on such outputs, Mexico urgently needs to adopt restrictive actions aiming at conserving the rich biological heritage of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Biocides in antifouling paint formulations currently registered for use

Antifouling paints incorporate biocides in their composition seeking to avoid or minimize the settlement and growing of undesirable fouling organisms. Therefore, biocides are released into the aquatic environments also affecting several nontarget organisms and, thus, compromising ecosystems. Despite global efforts to investigate the environmental occurrence and toxicity of biocides currently used in antifouling paints, the specific active ingredients that have been used in commercial products are poorly known. Thus, the present study assessed the frequencies of occurrence and relative concentrations of biocides in antifouling paint formulations registered for marketing worldwide. The main data were obtained from databases of governmental agencies, business associations, and safety data sheets from paint manufacturers around the world. The results pointed out for 25 active ingredients currently used as biocides, where up to six biocides have been simultaneously used in the examined formulations. Cuprous oxide, copper pyrithione, zinc pyrithione, zineb, DCOIT, and cuprous thiocyanate were the most frequent ones, with mean relative concentrations of 35.9 ± 12.8%, 2.9 ± 1.6%, 4.0 ± 5.3%, 5.4 ± 2.0%, 1.9 ± 1.9%, and 18.1 ± 8.0% (w/w) of respective biocide present in the antifouling paint formulations. Surprisingly, antifouling paints containing TBT as an active ingredient are still being registered for commercialization nowadays. These results can be applied as a proxy of biocides that are possibly being used by antifouling systems and, consequently, released into the aquatic environment, which can help to prioritize the active ingredients that should be addressed in future studies.

The Role of Estrogen and Thyroid Hormones in Zebrafish Visual System Function

Visual system development is a highly complex process involving coordination of environmental cues, cell pathways, and integration of functional circuits. Consequently, a change to any step, due to a mutation or chemical exposure, can lead to deleterious consequences. One class of chemicals known to have both overt and subtle effects on the visual system is endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). EDCs are environmental contaminants which alter hormonal signaling by either preventing compound synthesis or binding to postsynaptic receptors. Interestingly, recent work has identified neuronal and sensory systems, particularly vision, as targets for EDCs. In particular, estrogenic and thyroidogenic signaling have been identified as critical modulators of proper visual system development and function. Here, we summarize and review this work, from our lab and others, focusing on behavioral, physiological, and molecular data collected in zebrafish. We also discuss different exposure regimes used, including long-lasting effects of developmental exposure. Overall, zebrafish are a model of choice to examine the impact of EDCs and other compounds targeting estrogen and thyroid signaling and the consequences of exposure in visual system development and function.

An absurd scenario in 2021: Banned TBT-based antifouling products still available on the market

Despite the efforts of the International Marine Organization (IMO), through the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Antifouling Systems on Ships to ban the use of TBT-based antifouling paints (September 2008), and the Rotterdam Convention (RC) to forbid the trade of tributyltin (TBT), the situation does not seem to have significantly changed since 2014 when TBT-based paints were shown to be still being manufactured in the United States and offered for sale in stores throughout the Caribbean and Central America. In fact, this study shows that seven years later the same situation not only persists, but may have an even more global distribution than previously thought.

Resveratrol ameliorates polycystic ovary syndrome via transzonal projections within oocyte-granulosa cell communication

Rationale: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is closely linked to follicular dysplasia and impaired bidirectional oocyte-granulosa cell (GC) communication. Given that PCOS is a heterogeneous, multifactorial endocrine disorder, it is important to clarify the pathophysiology of this ovarian disease and identify a specific treatment.

Methods: We generated PCOS rat models based on neonatal tributyltin (TBT) exposure and studied the therapeutic effect and mechanism of resveratrol (RSV), a natural plant polyphenol. Transcriptome analysis was conducted to screen the significantly changed pathways, and a series of experiments, such as quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Western blot and phalloidin staining, were performed in rat ovaries. We also observed similar changes in human PCOS samples using Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database analysis and quantitative real-time PCR.

Results: We first found that injury to transzonal projections (TZPs), which are specialized filopodia that mediate oocyte-GC communication in follicles, may play an important role in the etiology of PCOS. We successfully established PCOS rat models using TBT and found that overexpressed calcium-/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II beta (CaMKIIβ) inhibited TZP assembly. In addition, TZP disruption and CAMK2B upregulation were also observed in samples from PCOS patients. Moreover, we demonstrated that RSV potently ameliorated ovarian failure and estrus cycle disorder through TZP recovery via increased cytoplasmic calcium levels and excessive phosphorylation of CaMKIIβ.

Conclusions: Our data indicated that upregulation of CaMKIIβ may play a critical role in regulating TZP assembly and may be involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS associated with ovarian dysfunction. Investigation of TZPs and RSV as potent CaMKIIβ activators provides new insight and a therapeutic target for PCOS, which is helpful for improving female reproduction.

One-pot method for preparation of capsaicin-containing double-network hydrogels for marine antifouling

Marine biofouling which interferes with normal marine operation and also causes huge economic loss has become a worldwide problem. With the development of society, there is an urgent need to develop non-toxic and efficient anti-fouling strategies. Capsaicin is an environmentally friendly antifouling agent, but controlling the stable release of capsaicin from the coating is still a challenge to be solved. To achieve long-lasting antifouling property, in this work, we incorporate a derivative of capsaicin N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)acrylamide (HMBA) to prepare double network (DN) hydrogels and make HMBA a part of the polymer network. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has good hydrophilicity, and as a soft and ductile network, acrylamide (AM) and HMBA can polymerize to generate a rigid and brittle network. By adjusting the content of HMBA in the DN hydrogels, we can obtain a PVA–PAHX hydrogel with high mechanical strength, low swelling rate, and excellent antifouling effect, which provides a feasible way for the practical application of a hydrogel coating in long-term marine antifouling.

Double-network hydrogel coatings containing capsaicin analogs were prepared by a one-pot method based on a green strategy, by incorporating a derivative of capsaicin N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl) acrylamide into the polymer network. An antifouling effect can be achieved.

A multi-bioassay integrated approach to assess antifouling potential of extracts from the Mediterranean sponge Ircinia oros

The phylum Porifera and their symbionts produce a wide variety of bioactive compounds, playing a central role in their ecology and evolution. In this study, four different extracts (obtained by non-polar and semi-polar extraction methodologies) of the Mediterranean sponge Ircinia oros were tested through a multi-bioassay integrated approach to assess their antifouling potential. Tests were performed using three common species, associated with three different endpoints: the marine bacterium Aliivibrio fischeri (inhibition of bioluminescence), the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (inhibition of growth), and different development stages of the brackish water serpulid Ficopomatus enigmaticus (gametes: sperm motion, vitality inhibition and cellular damage; larvae: development; adults: AChE (acetylcholinesterase)-inhibitory activity). The effects of extracts were species specific and did not vary among different extraction methodologies. In particular, no significant reduction of bioluminescence of A. fischeri was observed for all tested samples. By contrast, extracts inhibited P. tricornutum growth and had toxic effects on different F. enigmaticus' developmental stages. Our results suggest that the proposed test battery can be considered a suitable tool as bioactivity screening of marine natural products.

Current and future chemical treatments to fight biodeterioration of outdoor building materials and associated biofilms: Moving away from ecotoxic and towards efficient, sustainable solutions

All types of building materials are rapidly colonized by microorganisms, initially through an invisible and then later a visible biofilm that leads to their biodeterioration. Over centuries, this natural phenomenon has been managed using mechanical procedures, oils, or even wax. In modern history, many treatments such as high-pressure cleaners, biocides (mainly isothiazolinones and quaternary ammonium compounds) are commercially available, as well as preventive ones, such as the use of water-repellent coatings in the fabrication process. While all these cleaning techniques offer excellent cost-benefit ratios, their limitations are numerous. Indeed, building materials are often quickly recolonized after application, and microorganisms are increasingly reported as resistant to chemical treatments. Furthermore, many antifouling compounds are ecotoxic, harmful to human health and the environment, and new regulations tend to limit their use and constrain their commercialization. The current state-of-the-art highlights an urgent need to develop innovative antifouling strategies and the widespread use of safe and eco-friendly solutions to biodeterioration. Interestingly, innovative approaches and compounds have recently been identified, including the use of photocatalysts or natural compounds such as essential oils or quorum sensing inhibitors. Most of these solutions developed in laboratory settings appear very promising, although their efficiency and ecotoxicological features remain to be further tested before being widely marketed. This review highlights the complexity of choosing the adequate antifouling compounds when fighting biodeterioration and proposes developing case-to-case innovative strategies to raise this challenge, relying on integrative and multidisciplinary approaches.

Transient developmental exposure to tributyltin reduces optomotor responses in larval zebrafish (Danio rerio)

This study determined the effects of transient developmental exposure to tributyltin (TBT), a well-known anti-estrogenic environmental endocrine disrupting compound, on visual system development of larval zebrafish (Danio rerio). Zebrafish were exposed to either 0.2 μg/L or 20 μg/L TBT for 24 h when they were aged 24 h postfertilization (hpf), 72 hpf, or 7 days (d)pf. Immediately after exposure, larvae were transferred to system water for seven days of recovery followed by behavioral testing (startle and optomotor responses) and morphological assessment. TBT-treated larvae displayed age-dependent changes in morphology characterized by delayed/reduced growth and susceptibility to exposure. TBT exposure reduced the number of larvae displaying optomotor responses regardless of age of exposure; eye diameter was also decreased when exposure occurred at 24 hpf or 7 dpf. Startle responses were reduced only in TBT-treated larvae exposed when they were 24 hpf, suggesting transient TBT exposure during the early larval period may cause vision-specific effects.

Effects of nanostructure antifouling biocides towards a coral species in the context of global changes

Biofouling prevention is one of the biggest challenges faced by the maritime industry, but antifouling agents commonly impact marine ecosystems. Advances in antifouling technology include the use of nanomaterials. Herein we test an antifouling nano-additive based on the encapsulation of the biocide 4,5-dichloro-2-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (DCOIT) in engineered silica nanocontainers (SiNC). The work aims to assess the biochemical and physiological effects on the symbiotic coral Sarcophyton cf. glaucum caused by (1) thermal stress and (2) DCOIT exposure (free or nanoencapsulated forms), in a climate change scenario. Accordingly, the following hypotheses were addressed: (H1) ocean warming can cause toxicity on S. cf. glaucum; (H2) the nanoencapsulation process decreases DCOIT toxicity towards this species; (H3) the biocide toxicity, free or encapsulated forms, can be affected by ocean warming. Coral fragments were exposed for seven days to DCOIT in both free and encapsulated forms, SiNC and negative controls, under two water temperature regimes (26 °C and 30.5 °C). Coral polyp behavior and photosynthetic efficiency were determined in the holobiont, while biochemical markers were assessed individually in the endosymbiont and coral host. Results showed transient coral polyp retraction and diminished photosynthetic efficiency in the presence of heat stress or free DCOIT, with effects being magnified in the presence of both stressors. The activity of catalase and glutathione-S-transferase were modulated by temperature in each partner of the symbiosis. The shifts in enzymatic activity were more pronounced in the presence of free DCOIT, but to a lower extent for encapsulated DCOIT. Increased levels of oxidative damage were detected under heat conditions. The findings highlight the physiological constrains elicited by the increase of seawater temperature to symbiotic corals and demonstrate that DCOIT toxicity can be minimized through encapsulation in SiNC. The presence of both stressors magnifies toxicity and confirm that ocean warming enhances the vulnerability of tropical photosynthetic corals to local stressors.

DCOIT unbalances the antioxidant defense system in juvenile and adults of the marine bivalve Amarilladesma mactroides (Mollusca: Bivalvia)

DCOIT is a co-biocide that is part of the formulation of the commercial antifouling Sea-Nine 211® and although it is "safe to use", negative effects have been reported on the antioxidant defense system of non-target organisms. Therefore, the objective of this research was to verify and compare the response of antioxidant enzymes of juveniles and adults of Amarilladesma mactroides exposed to DCOIT. The animals were exposed to solvent control (DMSO 0.01%) and DCOIT (measured concentration 0.01 mg/L and 0.13 mg/L) for 96 h, then gills, digestive gland and mantle were collected for analysis of the enzymatic activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). The results revealed that adults, in relation to juveniles, have low basal activity of GST and SOD enzymes in the gills and digestive gland and high basal activity of SOD and CAT in the mantle. DCOIT did not alter GST activity in the gills of any life stage, while both concentrations decreased SOD and CAT in adults. In the digestive gland, it was observed that DCOIT (0.13 mg/L) decreased the GST activity in adults and CAT in juveniles, and both concentrations of the co-biocide decreased the SOD and CAT in adults. In the mantle, DCOIT (0.13 mg/L) increased CAT in juveniles. We conclude that juveniles have greater basal activity of antioxidant enzymes than adults and, in addition, DCOIT negatively affected the adults of A. mactroides, mainly decreasing the activity of GST, SOD and CAT in the gills and digestive gland of these organisms.

Tributyltin and the female hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal disruption

The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is the principal modulator of reproductive function. Proper control of this system relies on several hormonal pathways, which make the female reproductive components susceptible to disruption by endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as tributyltin (TBT). Here, we review the relevant research on the associations between TBT exposure and dysfunction of the female HPG axis components. Specifically, TBT reduced hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) expression and gonadotropin release, and impaired ovarian folliculogenesis, steroidogenesis, and ovulation, at least in part, by causing abnormal sensitivity to steroid feedback mechanisms and deleterious ovarian effects. This review covers studies using environmentally relevant doses of TBT in vitro (1 ng-20 ng/mL) and in vivo (10 ng-20 mg/Kg) in mammals. The review also includes discussion of important gaps in the literature and suggests new avenue of research to evaluate the possible mechanisms underlying TBT-induced toxicity in the HPG axis. Overall, the evidence indicates that TBT exposure is associated with toxicity to the components of the female reproductive axis. Further studies are needed to better elucidate the mechanisms through which TBT impairs the ability of the HPG axis to control reproduction.

Functional nanomaterials, synergisms, and biomimicry for environmentally benign marine antifouling technology

Marine biofouling remains one of the key challenges for maritime industries, both for seafaring and stationary structures. Currently used biocide-based approaches suffer from significant drawbacks, coming at a significant cost to the environment into which the biocides are released, whereas novel environmentally friendly approaches are often difficult to translate from lab bench to commercial scale. In this article, current biocide-based strategies and their adverse environmental effects are briefly outlined, showing significant gaps that could be addressed through advanced materials engineering. Current research towards the use of natural antifouling products and strategies based on physio-chemical properties is then reviewed, focusing on the recent progress and promising novel developments in the field of environmentally benign marine antifouling technologies based on advanced nanocomposites, synergistic effects and biomimetic approaches are discussed and their benefits and potential drawbacks are compared to existing techniques.

Effects of tributyltin on retinoid X receptor gene expression and global DNA methylation during intracapsular development of the gastropod Tritia mutabilis (Linnaeus, 1758)

The tributyltin (TBT)-mediated induction of imposex in marine snails is considered a common mechanism of endocrine disruption through the retinoid X receptor (RXR)-dependent pathway. However, there is evidence that regulation of RXR also relates to metabolic processes, differentiation, apoptosis, and embryonic development, playing a key role in molluscan neuronal differentiation and organogenesis. In this regard, very little is known about the gastropod Tritia mutabilis especially in relation to the effects of TBT exposure during intracapsular embryonic development. In this study, we have investigated the RXR expression fold changes of T. mutabilis encapsulated embryos exposed to different concentrations (10^-10 to 10^-12 M) of TBT up to 10 days of treatment. We demonstrate that RXR is sequentially expressed during development and that exposure to the lowest and highest TBT doses induces time-dependent changes in RXR gene transcription. We also show that TBT treatment is associated with global DNA demethylation and reduced DNA-methyltransferase I (DNMT1) expression and activity levels. Overall, our data indicate that RXR has important functions during the early stages of T. mutabilis embryo development and is involved in mediating the potential epigenetic alterations induced by TBT exposure.

Ecological risk assessment of booster biocides in sediments of the Brazilian coastal areas

Although booster biocides (Irgarol, diuron, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid, and DCOIT) have been detected in sediments along the Brazilian coastal areas, the risk associated to their occurrence and levels is still unknown. Thus, the ecological risk of booster biocides to sediment-dwelling organisms from the Brazilian coast was assessed using a risk characterization approach through the Risk Quotient (Measured environmental concentration (MEC)/Predicted no effect concentrations (PNECs)). Sedimentary PNECs for Irgarol, diuron, chlorothalonil and DCOIT were derived based on published ecotoxicological data from both freshwater and marine studies, while a NORMAN methodology was used to derived it for dichlofluanid. Results showed that DCOIT, diuron, Irgarol, chlorothalonil, and dichlofluanid can pose high risk on 47%, 35%, 15%, 1% and 1%, respectively, of the 113 Brazilian sites appraised. Considering the trend of expansion of navigation/maritime activities, DCOIT may worsen its impact over the coastal areas of Brazil, especially ports, but also ship/boatyards, marinas, and maritime traffic zones. The present study is an important contribution to support advance on policy formulation concerning booster biocides worldwide, particularly considering the lack of regulation on the use of antifouling biocides in Brazil.

Morphology modulation and performance optimization of nanopetal-based Ag-modified Bi2O2CO3 as an inactivating photocatalytic material

The use of photocatalytic technology to kill bacteria on marine vessel surface coatings has been paid more attention by research scholars. In this paper, petal-like microspheres with Ag nanoparticles were prepared by a simple one-step process combining the hydrothermal method and photodeposition. The 0.7% Ag/Bi₂O₂CO₃ composite photocatalyst exhibited the highest photocatalytic efficiency for bacterial removal under visible light irradiation and had the highest photogenerated carrier separation efficiency, and the sterilization rate was doubled compared with that of pure Bi₂O₂CO₃, reaching 95%. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, the existence of Ag nanoparticles was confirmed, and their size was approximately 10 nm. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag nanoparticles was investigated by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). It was shown that the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag improved the spectral utilization of the Ag/Bi₂O₂CO₃ composite photocatalyst and enhanced the stability of the catalyst. This caused the Ag/Bi₂O₂CO₃ composite photocatalyst to have superior photocatalytic activity to pure Bi₂O₂CO₃. The results of electrochemical impedance characterization and transient photocurrent response show that 0.7% Ag/Bi₂O₂CO₃ has a high efficiency of photogenerated carrier separation. By the free radical capture test, hydroxyl radicals were the primary active substance, and Ag⁺ improved the photocatalytic sterilization activity.

Tributyltin and high-refined carbohydrate diet lead to metabolic and reproductive abnormalities, exacerbating premature ovary failure features in the female rats

Exposure to the obesogen tributyltin (TBT) alone or high carbohydrate diet (HCD) alone leads to obesity and reproductive complications, such as premature ovary failure (POF) features. However, little is known about interactions between TBT and nutrition and their combined impact on reproduction. In this study, we assessed whether acute TBT and HCD exposure results in reproductive and metabolic irregularities. Female rats were treated with TBT (100 ng/kg/day) and fed with HCD for 15 days and metabolic and reproductive outcomes were assessed. TBT and HCD rats displayed metabolic impairments, such as increased adiposity, abnormal lipid profile and triglyceride and glucose (TYG) index, worsening adipocyte hypertrophy in HCD-TBT rats. These metabolic consequences were linked with reproductive disorders. Specifically, HCD-TBT rats displayed irregular estrous cyclicity, high follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, low anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels, reduction in ovarian reserve, and corpora lutea (CL) number, with increases in atretic follicles, suggesting that HCD-TBT exposure exacerbated POF features. Further, strong negative correlations were observed between adipocyte hypertrophy and ovarian reserve, CL number and AMH levels. HCD-TBT exposure resulted in reproductive tract inflammation and fibrosis. Collectively, these data suggest that TBT plus HCD exposure leads to metabolic and reproductive abnormalities, exacerbating POF features in female rats.

Effects of substances released from a coal tar-based coating used to protect harbor structures on oysters

Products coal tar-based are largely used as concrete structures as protective coatings but some questions about leaching and potential toxic effects remain unclear. A laboratory experiment exposing oysters to miniaturized concrete pillars painted with Lackpoxi N1761 over time was performed and trace elements and 17 PAH were monitored in seawater exposure media, and oyster tissues. The original paint composition was also analyzed, and high concentrations of trace elements and PAH were detected. Sharp increases in PAH concentrations were observed after 6-96 h in exposure media and oyster tissues, suggesting that these compounds were leached from the painted structures. In parallel, the integrity of the hemocytes lysosomal membranes of exposed organisms has been damaged. Based on the response of this biomarker, the use of Lackpoxi N1761 is potentially harmful to the environment and it is required that coal tar-based paints be evaluated according to the environmental risk assessment protocols.

Legacy and emerging antifouling biocide residues in a tropical estuarine system (Espirito Santo state, SE, Brazil)

The contamination by antifouling biocide residues (booster biocides - diuron, Irgarol, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid and DCOIT; butyltin compounds-BTs (TBT, DBT and MBT); and antifouling paint particles-APPs) was appraised in sediments of Vitoria Estuarine System (VES). Even at its historical lower (ΣBTs ≤113 ng Sn g^-1 dry wt), the current environmental levels of BTs in areas with a predominance of boatyards still pose a risk to the local biota and human population. DCOIT, among booster biocides, was the most frequently detected, especially in boatyards (≤40 ng g^-1 dry wt) and Vitoria Port (64 ng g^-1 dry wt), while APPs were also detected mainly in sediments of boatyards (≤5,969 μg g^-1 dry wt). Since levels of diuron and DCOIT in APPs were as high as 1,670,000 and 899,000 ng g^-1 dry wt, respectively, they are acting as secondary sources of these antifouling biocides. Therefore, VES is threatened by antifouling biocide residues due to the multiple diffuse sources of contamination, showing the need for more efforts on public policies (including temporal trend monitoring studies).

Rapid and cost-effective multiresidue analysis of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and antifouling booster biocides in marine sediments using matrix solid phase dispersion

Currently, there are many contaminants of concern that need to be accurately determined to help assess their potential environmental hazard. Despite their increasing interest, yet few environmental occurrence data exist, likely because they are present at low levels and in very complex matrices. Therefore, multiresidue analytical methods for their determination need to be highly sensitive, selective, and robust. Particularly, due to the trace levels of these chemicals in the environment, an extensive extraction procedure is required before determination. This work details the development of a fast and cheap vortex-assisted matrix solid-phase dispersion-high performance liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (VA-MSPD-HPLC-MS/MS) method for multiresidue determination of 59 contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and booster biocides, in sediment. The validated method provided high sensitivity (0.42-36.8 ngg^-1 dw quantification limits), wide and good linearity (r² > 0.999), satisfactory accuracy (60-140%), and precision below 20% for most target analytes. In comparison with previous methods, relying on traditional techniques, the proposed method demonstrated to be more environmentally friendly, cheaper, simpler, and faster. The method was applied to monitor the occurrence of these compounds in sediments collected in Brazil, using only 2 g dw sediment samples, free-solid support, and 5 mL methanol as extraction solvent. The UV filter avobenzone, the UV stabilizer and antifreeze methylbenzotriazole, the preservative methylparaben, the fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin, and the biocides irgarol and 4,5-dichloro-2-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one were determined at concentrations in the range 1.44-69.7 ngg^-1 dw.

How protected are marine protected areas: A case study of tributyltin in Latin America

Protected areas (PAs) are dedicated and managed to achieve long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. However, few studies have assessed contamination/pollution, one of the top five biodiversity threats, within these areas. In fact, more than 100,000 molecules used in consumer goods are potentially affecting over 250,000 protected areas distributed worldwide. As a result, chemical appraisal within PAs require specific approaches to be feasible. Herein, an approach for assessment of contamination in marine protected areas (MPAs) spread over large continental and/or global areas was proposed and tested using, as a case study, the impact of tributyltin (TBT) within Latin America. This approach included area delimitation, bibliographic survey, construction of attribute tables, data insertion in a Geographic Information System, overlapping with worldwide shapefiles of PAs, identification of affected PAs and evaluation of impacts using the outcomes against specific environmental quality guidelines/directives. A total of 259 records of TBT occurrence and/or its biological effect within 53 marine protected areas (including biosphere reserves, Ramsar sites and National parks) were gathered. Among affected species, were recorded 18 gastropods exhibiting imposex. In addition, 6 bivalves, 1 crustacean, and 3 fish species presenting TBT residues in tissues were seen in MPAs from Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Venezuela. Since levels of TBT recorded in several studied MPAs were enough do induce deleterious biological responses over marine biota, it was clear that conservancy goals of some "protected" areas are under threat. Considering that only TBT exposure was appraised, and these areas are likely to be concomitantly exposed to other classes of contaminants, the actual scenario can be even more frightening. Although initially applied as a TBT case study, the present approach enables an overview for other chemicals within protected areas worldwide.

Paint fragments as polluting microplastics: A brief review

Paint particles are part of the increasingly important microplastics (MPs) pollution of our oceans. They contain polyurethanes, polyesters, polyacrylates, polystyrenes, alkyls and epoxies. In spite of their prevalence, paint fragments are often excluded from MP audits. This review, citing 127 references, discusses detection, characteristics, sources and ecological effects of paint fragments in our oceans, as well as the abundance of paint fragments in MP samples around the world and their colonization by marine microorganisms, which differs from that of non-paint MPs. Paint MPs arise from shipping and boating activities, road markings and external surfaces of buildings. Many paint fragments come from antifouling paints used on commercial vessels and leisure boats; these may be regarded as particular pollutants, not only containing but also leaching heavy metals and biocides. Some effects of antifouling paint particles on aquatic biota are caused by these toxins. Paint particles are an understudied portion of marine MP pollution.

Raposo MM. Optical Fiber Sensors for Biocide Monitoring: Examples, Transduction Materials, and Prospects

Antifouling biocides are toxic to the marine environment impacting negatively on the aquatic ecosystems. These biocides, namely, tributyltin (TBT) and Cu(I) compounds, are used to avoid biofouling; however, their toxicity turns TBT and Cu(I) monitoring an important health issue. Current monitoring methods are expensive and time-consuming. This review provides an overview of the actual state of the art of antifouling paints' biocides, including their impact and toxicity, as well as the reported methods for TBT and Cu(I) detection over the past decade. The principles of optical fiber sensors (OFS) applications, with focus on environmental applications, and the use of organic chemosensors in this type of sensors are debated. The multiplexing ability of OFS and their application on aquatic environments are also discussed.

Impacts of microplastics on organotins' photodegradation in aquatic environments

Microplastics are ubiquitous in natural waters and affect the environmental fate of hydrophobic organic micropollutants. This study evaluated the impacts of four microplastics, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), on the photodegradation of organotin compounds (OTCs) under UV₃₆₅ irradiation (2.3 ± 0.1 W m^-2). The experiments were performed by mixing PP, PE, PS or PMMA microparticles with tri-organotins in artificial seawater. The photodegradation of OTCs in microplastic suspensions was influenced by the absorptivity onto microplastics. The decomposition rate of tributyltin (TBT) in UV-irradiated PP suspensions was greater than trimethyltin (TMT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) (p < 0.01). The adsorption capacities of OTCs (e.g., TBT) on PP particle surfaces were significantly lower than those on PE surfaces (p < 0.05) but similar with those on PMMA due to the different surface areas, shapes, and surface hydrophobicity of microplastics. TBT degraded faster (9.1%) in PS than in PMMA suspension (11.2%) within 240 min, respectively. However, only less than 5.4% was photodegraded in PP suspension due to the light scattering or absorption of the large sized PP particles. This study provided new insight into the impacts of microplastics on photodegradation of micropollutants in natural waters.

Are antifouling residues a matter of concern in the largest South American port?

In the present study, levels of booster biocides (diuron, Irgarol, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid and DCOIT), butyltin compounds (TBT, DBT and MBT) and antifouling paint particles (APPs) were assessed in sediments of areas under the influence of the largest Latin American port, marinas, boat traffic and ship/boat maintenance facilities located within Santos-São Vicente Estuarine System (SSES). Contamination profile was directly related to local maritime activities, where sediments from the main navigation channel (MNC) presented low levels of antifouling residues while adjacent areas (AA), characterized by the presence of boats and boatyards, showed higher contamination considering all analyzed residues. Moreover, areas under the influence of fishing boats/yards presented relevant levels of butyltins (ΣBTs > 300 ng g^-1) and APPs (>100 μg g^-1), while marinas dominated by recreational boats showed higher booster biocides occurrence. Sites located nearby shipyards in the MNC and boatyards in the AA presented expressive amounts of APPs (>200 μg g^-1). These APPs represent an important long-term source of biocides to the SSES. Thus, the profile of maritime activities in association to local oceanographic conditions drive the spatial distribution of antifouling residues within SESS, which in some case presented levels above sediment guidelines for TBT, DCOIT and diuron.

Simultaneous analysis of butyltins and total tin in sediments as a tool for the assessment of tributyltin behaviour, long-term persistence and historical contamination in the coastal environment

This study presents a new approach for the investigation of tributyltin (TBT) behaviour and fate in the marine environment. The approach is based on a simultaneous analysis of butyltins (BuTs) and total Sn in sediments, thus enabling an assessment of long-term persistence and historical input of TBT. The study also presents first evaluation of the extent to which the TBT-antifouling paints contribute to the contamination of coastal environments with inorganic Sn; it was demonstrated that the inorganic Sn in the investigated areas primarily originates from TBT degradation. The study was conducted by analyzing BuTs and total Sn in sediments from 34 locations along the Croatian Adriatic coast. The results revealed that 85% of the locations were contaminated with both BuTs and inorganic Sn. The share of ƩBuTs/total Sn was low (<10%) even in sediments with low TBT degradation efficiency (TBT/ƩBuTs >40%), demonstrating that only small portion of TBT introduced into the water column reached the sediment before being degraded. This means that recent TBT input into the marine environment may be at least 10 times higher than the amount estimated if only BuTs levels in sediments are considered. It was also demonstrated that TBT concentration in sediments with TOC <1% is not a good indicator of the overall pollution level, even if TBT/TOC approach is used in pollution assessment. Finally, in situ investigation showed that resuspension of contaminated sediments leads to significant release of MBT and DBT into the water column, whereas TBT mainly remains in sediment.

Imposex Incidence in Gastropod Species from Santa Marta Coastal Zone, Colombian Caribbean Sea

Imposex is a phenomenon widely associated with environmental exposure to organotin compounds which were quite common components of antifouling paints applied on boats and ship hulls. Here we study the incidence of imposex in neogastropods and its relation with water quality and maritime traffic in the coastal strip of Santa Marta, Colombia. Imposex was determined via specialized indexes and related to the organisms' size, somatic conditions, variables of water quality and maritime traffic, in a space-time assessment. There was evidence of imposex in five species Plicopurpura patula, Vasula deltoidea, Stramonita haemastoma, S. floridana, and Gemophos auritulus. Purpura patula and Vasula deltoidea species were found in all sampling sites. The results have proved that imposex is highly influenced by the maritime traffic variable, with greater prevalence during the dry season, and with P. patula being more sensitive than V. deltoidea.

Histological and Behavioral Toxicity of Tributyltin in the Tropical Guppy Poecilia vivipara

The tropical estuarine guppy Poecilia vivipara was used to address fish early life stage toxicity caused by the antifouling contaminant tributyltin. Six-day-old P. vivipara were exposed for 7 d to control water and waterborne tributyltin at 15.8, 83.8, 716, and 818 ng tin (Sn) L^-1 . After exposure, swimming, feeding, growth, and eye histological endpoints were evaluated. Histopathological analysis of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) indicated alterations in pigment positioning at all tributyltin concentrations. A dose-dependent increase in photoreceptor layer disorganization and iris melanin hyperpigmentation was verified, and high frequencies of RPE invaginations and iris epithelial cell atrophy were observed even at the lowest exposure concentration of 15.8 ng Sn L^-1 . At the highest exposure level (818 ng Sn L^-1 ) fish also presented reductions in swimming speed, swimming resistance, daily capture of Artemia nauplii, and growth in weight of 85, 60, 33, and 56% relative to controls, respectively. This association between retinal histopathology and reduced swimming and foraging behavior can reduce recruitment to the adult population. Environ Toxicol Chem 2020;39:1953-1963. © 2020 SETAC.

Antifouling biocides as a continuous threat to the aquatic environment: Sources, temporal trends and ecological risk assessment in an impacted region of Brazil

Antifouling biocides, such as irgarol and diuron, are commonly used in antifouling paints. Recently, studies carried out in a Brazilian region of ecological concern have warned for extremely high levels of these biocides. So, this work focused on a 4-year (2015-2018) evaluation considering the occurrence, environmental fate, seasonal variations and ecological risk assessment of irgarol and diuron in water and sediment from São Marcos Bay, Brazil, which is an area of international relevance located in the Amazon region. The results showed the ubiquitous presence of antifouling biocides, as well as their wide distribution along the bay. The concentration range of irgarol was between <0.8 and 89.4 ng L^-1 in water and between <0.5 and 9.2 ng g^-1dw in sediments, whereas diuron showed a range between <1.4 and 22.0 ng L^-1 in water and between <2.0 and 15.0 ng g^-1dw in sediments. The distribution of the biocides was mainly related to the intense Bay hydrodynamics. The environmental risk assessment showed that irgarol and diuron posed "high risk" to the aquatic biota of São Marcos Bay, exceeding international Environmental Quality Guidelines. The results represent a robust study on the environmental fate of such biocides and intend to be a useful data source for eventual legislation since regulation concerning antifouling substances is necessary for Brazil.

Booster Biocides Levels in the Major Blood Cockle (Tegillarca granosa L., 1758) Cultivation Areas along the Coastal Area of Peninsular Malaysia

Booster biocides have been rapidly growing in use, mainly in the shipping industry and in agricultural activities. The use of booster biocides is known to cause adverse effects on marine ecosystems, such as by inhibiting the photosynthesis process in marine plants, and they have the potential to accumulate in marine organisms. In the present study, booster biocides of Irgarol 1051, diuron, 3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) and chlorothalonil were measured in the major blood cockle (Tegillarca granosa) cultivation areas along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The highest Irgarol 1051 mean was found in the blood cockle with a value of 98.92 ± 13.65 µg/kg in Kapar, Selangor, while the means of diuron and its metabolites and 3,4-DCA showed the highest values of 40.31 ± 7.61 and 41.42 ± 21.58 µg/kg in Kapar, Selangor and Sungai Ayam, Johor, respectively. Sungai Ayam, Johor also exhibited the highest amount of chlorothalonil of 29.76 ± 8.80 µg/kg. By referring to sediment quality guidelines, about 72% and more than 90% of sediment samples exceeded the environmental risk limits (ERLs) and maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for Irgarol 1051 and diuron, respectively. However, referring to the risk characterization ratio (RCR), none of the blood cockle samples exceeded 1, which means that there is no potential for adverse effects to occur. Thus, the contaminants in the marine ecosystem caused by booster biocides are highlighted as a serious issue, mainly in sediment.
