Investigating immobilization efficiency of Pb in solution and loess soil using bio-inspired carbonate precipitation

Immobilizing lead in aqueous solution and loess soil using microbially induced carbonate/phosphate precipitation (MICP/MIPP) under harsh pH environments

The bioaccumulation of heavy metals due to metallurgical and smelting activities threatens human health. Although microbial-induced carbonate/phosphate precipitation (MICP/MIPP) technology has been applied to heavy metal remediation, the relative merits of MICP and MIPP, especially under extreme pH environments, have not yet been documented. In this study, Sporosarcina pasteurii (SP)-based MICP and Bacillus megaterium (BM)-based MIPP were applied to immobilize lead (Pb) in aqueous solution and loess soil. The results showed that the BM retained a strong phosphorolysis ability when under strongly acidic conditions, while the ureolysis ability of SP approached zero. Furthermore, the bioprecipitates obtained under BM-based MIPP had a denser appearance, presumably due to the enrichment of calcite and apatite crystals. The results also showed that Pb immobilization was achieved through bacterial adsorption, the chelate function of sodium glycerophosphate (SGP), large organic matter complexation, and biomineralization through the MICP/MIPP mechanism. Under SP-based MICP, SP and large organic matter immobilized Pb2+ at rates of 17.6 % and 31.7 %, respectively, while under BM-based MIPP, BM, organic matter, and SGP immobilized Pb2+ at rates of 21.5 %, 23.4 %, and 48.5 % respectively. The MICP and MIPP mechanisms dominated Pb immobilization at rates of 78.6 % and 99.6 %, respectively.

Phosphorus-based soil prophylactics for managing Pb contamination in soil: Slow-release kinetics and microbiological effects

Soil remediation poses significant challenges due to its spatial heterogeneity, surpassing the complexities of atmospheric and water remediation. This study introduces an innovative approach to prevent soil heavy metal pollution by developing three phosphorus slow-release heavy metal soil prophylactic agents (SLPs) - Sap-11, Sap-12, and Sap-21. At a liquid-to-solid ratio of 1:20, the three types of SLPs achieve phosphorus sustained slow release amounts of 1.586 g/L, 4.259 g/L, and 1.444 g/L within 30 days, respectively. Over a cultivation period of 120 days, after amendment with the three SLPs, the surface soil demonstrates stabilization capacities for Pb of 29.56 mg/g, 46.24 mg/g, and 25.77 mg/g, respectively, representing enhancements of 283.64 %, 500.12 %, and 250.74 % compared to the control. Firstly, the direct contribution of P (up to 3.778 mg/g) released from SLPs chemically binding with Pb, and secondly, a significant proportion of the indirect contribution originating from the microbial activity and soil organic matter. In summary, SLP emerges as an effective strategy for soil heavy metal management, stabilizing heavy metals by stimulating the soil's inherent physiological and biochemical reactions. This approach provides a practical solution for the application of P-containing materials and introduces novel perspectives for soil heavy metal management strategies.

Immobilization of Pb(II) by Bacillus megaterium-based microbial-induced phosphate precipitation (MIPP) considering bacterial phosphorolysis ability and Ca-mediated alleviation of lead toxicity

Inappropriate handling of lead (Pb)-containing wastewater that is produced as a result of smelting activities threatens the surrounding environment and human health. The microbial-induced phosphate precipitation (MIPP) technology was applied to immobilize Pb2+ in an aqueous solution considering bacterial phosphorolysis ability and Ca-mediated alleviation of lead toxicity. Pb immobilization was accompanied by sample characterization in order to explore the inherent mechanism that affected the immobilization efficiency. Results showed that Ca2+ use elevated the immobilization efficiency through the prevention of bacterial physisorption and chemisorption, an enhancement to the phosphatase activity and the degree of SGP hydrolysis, and the provision of nucleation sites for Pb2+ to attach. The formation of the Pb-GP complex helped the bacteria to maintain its activity at the commencement of catalyzing SGP hydrolysis. The nucleated minerals that were precipitated in a columnar shape through a directional stacking manner under MIPP featured higher chemical stability compared to non-nucleated minerals. As a result, there were three pathways, namely, bacterial physisorption, bacterial chemisorption, and substrate chelation, applied for Pb immobilization. The immobilization efficiency of 99.6% is achieved by precipitating bioprecipitates including Pb5(PO4)3Cl, Pb10(PO4)6Cl2, and Ca2Pb3(PO4)3Cl. The findings accentuate the potential of applying the MIPP technology to Pb-containing wastewater remediation.

β-tricalcium phosphate enhanced biomineralization of Cd2+ and Pb2+ by Sporosarcina ureilytica HJ1 and Sporosarcina pasteurii HJ2

Microbiologically induced CaCO3 precipitation (MICP) has been proposed as a potential bioremediation method to immobilize contaminating metals. In this study, carbonate mineralizing bacteria HJ1 and HJ2, isolated from heavy metal contaminated soil, was employed for Cd2+ and Pb2+ immobilization with or without β-tricalcium phosphate addition. Compared with the only treatments amended with strains, the combined application of β-tricalcium phosphate and HJ1 improved the immobilization rates of Cd and Pb by 1.49 and 1.70 times at 24 h, and the combined application of β-tricalcium phosphate and HJ2 increased the immobilization rates of Cd and Pb by 1.25 and 1.79 times. The characterization of biomineralization products revealed that Cd2+ and Pb2+ primarily immobilized from the liquid phase as CdCO3 and PbCO3, and the addition of β-tricalcium phosphate facilitated the formation of Ca4.03Cd0.97(PO4)3(OH) and Pb3(PO4)2. Also, the calcium source was related to the speciation of carbonate precipitation and improved the Cd and Pb remediation efficiency. This research demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of MICP combined with β-tricalcium phosphate in immobilization of Cd and Pb, which will provide a fundamental basis for future applications of MICP to mitigate soil heavy metal pollutions.

Two decades of research trends in microbial-induced carbonate precipitation for heavy metal removal: a bibliometric review and literature review

Amidst the increasing significance of innovative solutions for bioremediation of heavy metal removal, this paper offers a thorough bibliometric analysis of microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) for heavy metal removal, as a promising technology to tackle this urgent environmental issue. This study focused on articles published from 1999 to 2022 in the Scopus database. It assesses trends, participation, and key players within the MICP for heavy metal sequestration. Among the 930 identified articles, 74 countries participated in the field, with China being the most productive. Varenyam Achal, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chemosphere are leaders in the research landscape. Using VOSviewer and R-Studio, keyword hotspots like "MICP", "urease", and "heavy metals" underscore the interdisciplinary nature of MICP research and its focus on addressing a wide array of environmental and soil-related challenges. VOSviewer emphasises essential terms like "calcium carbonate crystal", while R-Studio highlights ongoing themes such as "soil" and "organic" aspects. These analyses further showcase the interdisciplinary nature of MICP research, addressing a wide range of environmental challenges and indicating evolving trends in the field. This review also discusses the literature concerning the potential of MICP to immobilise contaminants, the evolution of the research outcome in the last two decades, MICP treatment techniques for heavy metal removal, and critical challenges when scaling from laboratory to field. Readers will find this analysis beneficial in gaining valuable insights into the evolving field and providing a solid foundation for future research and practical implementation.

Deterioration phenomenon of Pb-contaminated aqueous solution remediation and enhancement mechanism of nano-hydroxyapatite-assisted biomineralization

Modern metallurgical and smelting activities discharge the lead-containing wastewater, causing serious threats to human health. Bacteria and urease applied to microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) and enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) are denatured under high Pb2+ concentration. The nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP)-assisted biomineralization technology was applied in this study for Pb immobilization. Results showed that the extracellular polymers and cell membranes failed to secure the urease activity when subjected to 60 mM Pb2+. The immobilization efficiency dropped to below 50% under MICP, whereas it due to a lack of extracellular polymers and cell membranes dropped to below 30% under EICP. nHAP prevented the attachment of Pb2+ either through competing with bacteria and urease or promoting Ca2+/Pb2+ ion exchange. Furthermore, CO32- from ureolysis replaced the hydroxyl (-OH) in hydroxylpyromorphite to encourage the formation of carbonate-bearing hydroxylpyromorphite of higher stability (Pb10(PO4)6CO3). Moreover, nHAP application overcame an inability to provide nucleation sites by urease. As a result, the immobilization efficiency, when subjected to 60 mM Pb2+, elevated to above 80% under MICP-nHAP and to some 70% under EICP-nHAP. The findings highlight the potential of applying the nHAP-assisted biomineralization technology to Pb-containing water bodies remediation.

Biogenic calcium improved Cd2+ and Pb2+ immobilization in soil using the ureolytic bacteria Bacillus pasteurii

Bioremediation based on microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) was conducted in cadmium and lead contaminated soil to investigate the effects of MICP on Cd and Pb in soil. In this study, soil indigenous nitrogen was shown to induce MICP to stabilize heavy metals without inputting exogenous urea. The results showed that applying Bacillus pasteurii coupled with CaCl2 reduced Cd and Pb bioavailability, which could be clarified through the proportion of exchangeable Cd and Pb in soil decreasing by 23.65 % and 12.76 %, respectively. Moreover, B. pasteurii was combined separately with hydroxyapatite (HAP), eggshells (ES), and oyster shells (OS) to investigate their effects on soil heavy metals' chemical fractions, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP)-extractable Cd and Pb as well as enzymatic activity. Results showed that applying B. pasteurii in soil significantly decreased the heavy metals in the exchangeable fraction and increased them in the carbonate phase fraction. When B. pasteurii was combined with ES and OS, the content of carbonate-bound Cd increased by 114.72 % and 118.81 %, respectively, significantly higher than when B. pasteurii was combined with HAP, wherein the fraction of carbonate-bound Cd increased by 86 %. The combination of B. pasteurii and biogenic calcium effectively reduced the leached contents of Cd and Pb in soil, and the TCLP-extractable Cd and Pb fractions decreased by 43.88 % and 30.66 %, respectively, in the BP + ES group and by 52.60 % and 41.77 %, respectively, in the BP + OS group. This proved that MICP reduced heavy metal bioavailability in the soil. Meanwhile, applying B. pasteurii and calcium materials significantly increased the soil urease enzyme activity. The microstructure and chemical composition of the soil samples were studied, and the results from scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction demonstrated the MICP process and identified the formation of CaCO3, Ca0.67Cd0.33CO3, and PbCO3 in heavy metal-contaminated soil.

Biomass conversion and radiocaesium (Rad-Cs) leaching behaviors of radioactive grass in anaerobic wet fermentation systems: Effects of pre-treatments

Persistent concerns regarding environmental hazards arise from the difficulty in disposing of radioactive plant-based wastes originating from the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) in Japan in 2011. In this study, three anaerobic digestion (AD) strategies were proposed: Sole anaerobic wet fermentation, and wet fermentations with either alkaline-heat or ultrasonic pre-treatment, which were employed for long-term anaerobic treatment of a genuine radioactive grass stemming from the FNPP accident. The objectives of this work are to investigate the effects of pre-treatments on biomass conversion efficiency and to gain insight into the leaching behavior of radiocaesium (Rad-Cs) within AD processes. Experimental results indicate that by introducing alkaline-heat and ultrasonic pre-treatments to AD systems, the removal efficiencies of total solids (TS) from the raw grass increased by 60.8 % and 42.5 %, respectively, compared to sole wet fermentation. Pre-treatments have been shown to enhance the stability of AD systems, both in terms of enhancing methane production and mitigating pH fluctuations triggered by the accumulation of organic acids. Remarkably, even though the Rad-Cs leaching rate was highest when the AD system was fed with the alkaline-heat pre-treated grass, it remained unsatisfactory at only 5.77 %. We inadvertently isolated a soil-like component from the raw grass, and analyzed both its proportion in the raw grass and the radioactivity intensity. The results indicate that although the soil constituted only 9.51 % TS of the raw grass, it accounted for a significant 81.35 % of the total radioactivity. The soil, which has a pronounced affinity for ionic Cs, being mixed into the raw grass, was identified as the primary factor limiting the leaching efficiency of Rad-Cs throughout both the pre-treatment and wet fermentation phases.

To improve the efficiency of aerobic digestion, this investigation utilized the synergistic effect of lysozyme-producing strain YH14 and surfactant-producing strain ZXY4 to promote sludge hydrolysis, and added NaCl to enhance this promoting effect. The best performance in promoting sludge hydrolysis was achieved when the inoculum of functional bacteria was 12 % (inoculum ratio of strain YH14: strain ZXY4 = 1:3) and the dosage of NaCl was 5 g L-1, which caused an increase of 19.25 % in the SS removal rate and 2588.21 mg L-1 in the SCOD release, as compared with the control. Fluorescence region integral analysis shows that the synergy of two functional bacteria and NaCl can enhance the biodegradability of sludge. Protein secondary structure analysis shows that strain ZXY4 and Na+ cause the EPS structure to loosen, increasing the chances of lysozyme lysis of bacteria. Nucleotide metabolism, metabolism of other amino acids and membrane transport enhanced in a co-processing system.

Applying the first microcapsule-based self-healing microbial-induced calcium carbonate materials to prevent the migration of Pb ions

Lead (Pb) accumulation can lead to serious threats to surrounding environments and damage to the liver and kidneys. In the past few years, microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology has been widely applied to achieve Pb immobilization due to its environmentally friendly nature. However, harsh pH conditions can cause the instability of the carbonate precipitation to degrade or dissolve, increasing the potential of Pb2+ migration into nearby environments. In this study, microcapsule-based self-healing microbial-induced calcium carbonate (MICC) materials were applied to prevent Pb migration. The highest sporulation rate of 95.8% was attained at 7 g/L yeast extract, 10 g/L NH4Cl, and 3.6 g/L Mn2+. In the germination phase, the microcapsule not only prevented the bacterial spores from being threatened by the acid treatment but secured their growth and reproduction. Micro analysis also revealed that cerussite, calcite, and aragonite minerals were present, while extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) were identified via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These results confirm their involvement in combining Pb2+ and Ca2+. The immobilization efficiency of above 90% applied to MICC materials was attained, while it of below 5% applied to no MICC use was attained. The findings explore the potential of applying microcapsule-based self-healing MICC materials to prevent Pb ion migration when the calcium carbonate degrades under harsh pH conditions.

Study on Cu- and Pb-contaminated loess remediation using electrokinetic technology coupled with biological permeable reactive barrier

Although the electrokinetic (EK) remediation has drawn great attention because of its good maneuverability, the focusing phenomenon near the cathode and low removal efficiency remain to be addressed. In this study, a novel EK reactor was proposed to remediate Cu and Pb contaminated loess where a biological permeable reactive barrier (bio-PRB) was deployed to the middle of the EK reactor. For comparison, three test configurations, namely, CG, TG-1, and TG-2, were available. CG considered the multiple enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) treatments, while TG-1 considered both the multiple EICP treatments and pH regulation. TG-2 further considered NH4+ recovery based on TG-1. CG not only improved Cu and Pb removals by the bio-PRB but also depressed the focusing phenomenon. TG-1 causes more Cu2+ and Pb2+ to migrate toward the bio-PRB and aggravates Cu and Pb removals by the bio-PRB, depressing the focusing phenomenon. TG-2 depressed the focusing phenomenon the most because Cu2+ and Pb2+ can combine with not only CO32- but PO43-. The removal efficiency of Cu and Pb is 34% and 36%, respectively. A NH4+ recovery of about 100% is attained.

Biopolymer-assisted enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation for immobilizing Cu ions in aqueous solution and loess

Wastewater, discharged in copper (Cu) mining and smelting, usually contains a large amount of Cu2+. Immobilizing Cu2+ in aqueous solution and soils is deemed crucial in preventing its migration into surrounding environments. In recent years, the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) has been widely applied to Cu immobilization. However, the effect of Cu2+ toxicity denatures and even inactivates the urease. In the present work, the biopolymer-assisted EICP technology was proposed. The inherent mechanism affecting Cu immobilization was explored through a series of test tube experiments and soil column tests. Results indicated that 4 g/L chitosan may not correspond to a higher immobilization efficiency because it depends as well on surrounding pH conditions. The use of Ca2+ not only played a role in further protecting urease and regulating the environmental pH but also reduced the potential for Cu2+ to migrate into nearby environments when malachite and azurite minerals are wrapped by calcite minerals. The species of carbonate precipitation that are recognized in the numerical simulation and microscopic analysis supported the above claim. On the other hand, UC1 (urease and chitosan colloid) and UC2 (urea and calcium source) grouting reduced the effect of Cu2+ toxicity by transforming the exchangeable state-Cu into the carbonate combination state-Cu. The side effect, induced by 4 g/L chitosan, promoted the copper-ammonia complex formation in the shallow ground, while the acidic environments in the deep ground prevented Cu2+ from coordinating with soil minerals. These badly degraded the immobilization efficiency. The Raman spectroscopy and XRD test results tallied with the above results. The findings shed light on the potential of applying the biopolymer-assisted EICP technology to immobilizing Cu ions in water bodies and sites.

Effects of four amendments on cadmium and arsenic immobilization and their exposure risks from pakchoi consumption

Exposure to heavy metal(loid)s (HM) through contaminated food chains poses significant health risks to humans. While soil amendments are known to reduce HM bioavailability, their effects on bioaccessibility and health risks in soil-pakchoi-human systems remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a greenhouse pot experiment coupling soil immobilization with bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment for Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption. Four amendments (attapulgite, shell powder, nanoscale zero-valent iron, and biochar) were applied to soil, resulting in changes to soil characteristics (pH and organic matter), plant dry weight, and exchangeable fractions of As and Cd. Among the tested amendments, biochar exhibited the highest effectiveness in reducing the risk of Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption. The bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment revealed that the application of 5% biochar resulted in the lowest hazard index, significantly decreasing it from 1.36 to 0.33 in contaminated soil. Furthermore, the structural equation model demonstrated that pH played a critical role in influencing remediation efficiency, impacting the exposure of the human body to Cd and As. In conclusion, our study offers a new perspective on mitigating exposure risks of soil HM and promoting safe crop production. The results underscore the importance of considering bioaccessibility in health risk assessment and highlight the potential of biochar as a promising amendment for reducing Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption.

Microbially induced calcium precipitation driven by denitrification: Performance, metabolites, and molecular mechanisms

Microbially induced calcium precipitation (MICP) driven by denitrification has attracted extensive attention due to its application potential in nitrate removal from calcium-rich groundwater. However, little research has been conducted on this technique at the molecular level. Here, Pseudomonas WZ39 was used to explore the molecular mechanisms of nitrate-dependent MICP and the effects of Ca²⁺ on bacterial transcriptional regulation and metabolic response. The results exhibited that appropriate Ca²⁺ concentration (4.5 mM) can promote denitrification and the production of ATP, EPSs, and SMPs. Genome-wide analysis showed that the nitrate-dependent MICP was accomplished through heterotrophic denitrification and CO₂ capture. During this process, EPS biosynthesis and Ca²⁺ signaling regulation were involved in the nucleation template supply and Ca²⁺ homeostasis balance. Untargeted transcriptome- and metabolome-association analyses revealed that the addition of Ca²⁺ triggered the significant up-regulation in several key pathways, such as transmembrane transporter and channel activities, amino acid metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, and carbon metabolism, which played a momentous role in the mineral nucleation and energy provision. The detailed information provided novel insights for understanding the active control of bacteria on MICP, and has great significance for deepening the cognition of groundwater remediation using nitrate-dependent MICP technique.

Evaluating gas breakthrough pressure and gas permeability in a landfill cover layer for mitigation of hazardous gas emissions

The construction of an engineered cover layer over landfills is a common method applied to reduce the emission of hazardous gases into the atmosphere. Landfill gas pressures can reach 50 kPa or even higher in some cases, thus posing a serious threat to nearby properties and human safety. As such, the evaluation of gas breakthrough pressure and gas permeability in a landfill cover layer is of great necessity. In this study, the loess soil that is often applied as a cover layer in landfills in northwestern China was used to conduct gas breakthrough, gas permeability, and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests. Resultantly, the smaller the capillary tube diameter, the higher the capillary force, and the more significant the capillary effect. Gas breakthrough could be attained with no difficulty, provided that the capillary effect was minimal or approached zero. A good fit between the experimental gas breakthrough pressure-intrinsic permeability relationship and a logarithmic equation was found. The mechanical effect blew up the gas flow channel. In the worst-case scenario, the mechanical effect could lead to the overall failure of a loess cover layer in a landfill. A new gas flow channel was formed between the rubber membrane and the loess specimen as a result of the interfacial effect. Although both the mechanical and interfacial effects can elevate the gas emission rate, the latter did not play a role in the improvement of the gas permeability; therefore, misleading interference took place in the evaluation of the gas permeability, and an overall failure of the loess cover layer. To tackle this problem, the point at which the large- and small-effective stress asymptotes cross on the volumetric deformation-P_eff diagram may be applied to give early warning signals of the potential overall failure of the loess cover layer in landfills in northwestern China.

Baseline investigation on soil solidification through biocementation using airborne bacteria

Microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) through the ureolysis metabolic pathway is one of the most studied topics in biocementation due to its high efficiency. Although excellent outcomes have proved the potential of this technique, microorganisms face some obstacles when considering complicated situations in the real field, such as bacterial adaptability and survivability issues. This study made the first attempt to seek solutions to this issue from the air, exploring ureolytic airborne bacteria with resilient features to find a solution to survivability issues. Samples were collected using an air sampler in Sapporo, Hokkaido, a cold region where sampling sites were mostly covered with dense vegetation. After two rounds of screening, 12 out of 57 urease-positive isolates were identified through 16S rRNA gene analysis. Four potentially selected strains were then evaluated in terms of growth pattern and activity changes within a range of temperatures (15°C-35°C). The results from sand solidification tests using two Lederbergia strains with the best performance among the isolates showed an improvement in unconfined compressive strength up to 4-8 MPa after treatment, indicating a high MICP efficiency. Overall, this baseline study demonstrated that the air could be an ideal isolation source for ureolytic bacteria and laid a new pathway for MICP applications. More investigations on the performance of airborne bacteria under changeable environments may be required to further examine their survivability and adaptability.

Surfactant enhanced thermally activated persulfate remediating PAHs-contaminated soil: Insight into compatibility, degradation processes and mechanisms

Although advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on persulfate (PS) is an attractive approach for repairing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soils, limited oxidizability of PAHs and efficient in-situ activation of PS hinder its practical applications. In this study, we comprehensively examined the contributions of five representative surfactants on the oxidative remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil in terms of degradation kinetics of the pollutants, and further proposed an innovative coupling strategy of surfactant-enhanced thermally activated PS remediating PAHs-contaminated soil. The results showed that the degradation process of PAHs in soil was significantly facilitated only via adding sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) and fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetic pattern. The removal of phenanthrene (PHE) reached 98.56% at 50 mM PS, 50 °C, 5 g L^-1 SDBS and 48 h reaction time, accompanying an increase of 25% in reaction rate constant from 0.0572 h^-1 (without SDBS) to 0.0715 h^-1. More importantly, SDBS-enhanced thermally activated PS degrading PAHs with higher benzene rings were more effective as the reaction rate constants of pyrene (PYR) and benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) were significantly increased by 49.40% and 56.86%. Additionally, only appropriate dosages (5-10 g L^-1) of SDBS facilitated the oxidative degradation of PHE, as well as the aging time of contaminant-soil contact slowed down the enhancement of oxidative degradation of PHE by SDBS. Scavenger experiments demonstrated that SO₄^·- and ¹O₂ were the dominant reactive oxygen species. Finally, a possible oxidative degradation pathway of PHE was proposed, and the toxicity of derived intermediates got alleviation by the assessment using the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool. This investigation was promising for in situ scale-up remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

Spatial distribution, sources, and risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in cultivated soils using isotopic tracing techniques and Monte Carlo simulation

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in cultivated lands pose serious threats to the environment and human health. Therefore, improving the understanding of their distinct sources and environmental risks by integrating various methods is necessary. This study investigated the distribution, sources, and environmental risks of eight PTEs in cultivated soils in Lishui City, eastern China, using digital soil mapping, positive matrix factorisation (PMF), isotopic tracing, and Monte Carlo simulation. The results showed that Pb and Cd are the main pollutants, which posed higher ecological risks in the study area than the other PTEs. Natural, mining, traffic, and agricultural sources were identified as the four determinants of PTE accumulation via a PMF model combined with Pearson correlation analysis, showing that their contribution rates were 22.6 %, 45.7 %, 15.2 %, and 16.5 %, respectively. Stable isotope analysis further confirmed that local mining activities affected the HM accumulation. Additionally, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk values for children were 3.18 % and 3.75 %, respectively, exceeding their acceptable levels. We also identified that mining activities were the most important sources of human health risks (55.7 % for adults and 58.6 % for children) via Monte Carlo simulations coupled with the PMF model. Overall, this study provides insights into the PTE pollution management and health risk control in cultivated soils.

Contamination characteristics and source analysis of potentially toxic elements in dustfall-soil-crop systems near non-ferrous mining areas of Yunnan, southwestern China

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the dustfall-soil-crop system pose a serious threat to the ecological environment and agricultural production. However, there is still a knowledge gap in terms of better understanding the distinctive sources of PTEs by integrating various models and technologies. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the concentrations, distribution, and sources of seven PTEs in a dustfall-soil-crop system (424 samples in total) near a typical non-ferrous mining area, using absolute principal component score/multiple linear regression (APCS/MLR) combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microscopy techniques. Our results showed that the mean values of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the soils were 211, 14, 105, 91, 65, 232, and 325 mg/kg, respectively. These values were significantly higher than the background soil values in Yunnan. Except for Ni and Cr, all elements in the soil were significantly higher than the screening values of agricultural lands in China. The spatial distribution of PTE concentrations was similar among the three media. The ACPS/MLR, XRD, and microscopy analyses further indicated that soil PTEs mainly originated from industrial activities (37 %), vehicle emissions and agricultural activities (29 %), respectively. Dustfall PTEs mainly originated from vehicle emissions and industrial activities, accounting for 40 % and 37 %, respectively. Crop PTEs mainly originated from vehicle emissions and soil (57 %), and agricultural activities (11 %), respectively. PTEs seriously threaten the safety of agricultural products and the ecological environment once they settle from the atmosphere to soil and crop leaves, further accumulate in crops, and spread through the food chain. Therefore, our study provides scientific evidence for government regulators to control PTE pollution and reduce their environmental risks in dustfall-soil-crop systems.

Immobilizing lead and copper in aqueous solution using microbial- and enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation

Inappropriate irrigation could trigger migration of heavy metals into surrounding environments, causing their accumulation and a serious threat to human central nervous system. Traditional site remediation technologies are criticized because they are time-consuming and featured with high risk of secondary pollution. In the past few years, the microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is considered as an alternative to traditional technologies due to its easy maneuverability. The enzyme-induced carbonate precipitate (EICP) has attracted attention because bacterial cultivation is not required prior to catalyzing urea hydrolysis. This study compared the performance of lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) remediation using MICP and EICP respectively. The effect of the degree of urea hydrolysis, mass and species of carbonate precipitation, and chemical and thermodynamic properties of carbonates on the remediation efficiency was investigated. Results indicated that ammonium ion (NH4+) concentration reduced with the increase in lead ion (Pb2+) or copper ion (Cu2+) concentration, and for a given Pb2+ or Cu2+ concentration, it was much higher under MICP than EICP. Further, the remediation efficiency against Cu2+ is approximately zero, which is way below that against Pb2+ (approximately 100%). The Cu2+ toxicity denatured and even inactivated the urease, reducing the degree of urea hydrolysis and the remediation efficiency. Moreover, the reduction in the remediation efficiency against Pb2+ and Cu2+ appeared to be due to the precipitations of cotunnite and atacamite respectively. Their chemical and thermodynamic properties were not as good as calcite, cerussite, phosgenite, and malachite. The findings shed light on the underlying mechanism affecting the remediation efficiency against Pb2+ and Cu2+.

Optimization of calcium carbonate precipitation during alpha-amylase enzyme-induced calcite precipitation (EICP)

The sand production during oil and gas extraction poses a severe challenge to the oil and gas companies as it causes erosion of pipelines and valves, damages the pumps, and ultimately decreases production. There are several solutions implemented to contain sand production including chemical and mechanical means. In recent times, extensive work has been done in geotechnical engineering on the application of enzyme-induced calcite precipitation (EICP) techniques for consolidating and increasing the shear strength of sandy soil. In this technique, calcite is precipitated in the loose sand through enzymatic activity to provide stiffness and strength to the loose sand. In this research, we investigated the process of EICP using a new enzyme named alpha-amylase. Different parameters were investigated to get the maximum calcite precipitation. The investigated parameters include enzyme concentration, enzyme volume, calcium chloride (CaCl₂) concentration, temperature, the synergistic impact of magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) and CaCl₂, Xanthan Gum, and solution pH. The generated precipitate characteristics were evaluated using a variety of methods, including Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was observed that the pH, temperature, and concentrations of salts significantly impact the precipitation. The precipitation was observed to be enzyme concentration-dependent and increase with an increase in enzyme concentration as long as a high salt concentration was available. Adding more volume of enzyme brought a slight change in precipitation% due to excessive enzymes with little or no substrate available. The optimum precipitation (87%) was yielded at 12 pH and with 2.5 g/L of Xanthan Gum as a stabilizer at a temperature of 75°C. The synergistic effect of both CaCl₂ and MgCl₂ yielded the highest CaCO₃ precipitation (32.2%) at (0.6:0.4) molar ratio. The findings of this research exhibited the significant advantages and insights of alpha-amylase enzyme in EICP, enabling further investigation of two precipitation mechanisms (calcite precipitation and dolomite precipitation).
