Synthesis and application of magnetic-surfaced pseudo molecularly imprinted polymers for zearalenone pretreatment in cereal samples

Rational selection of 4,4',4″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) trianiline-based covalent organic framework as adsorbent for effective co-extraction of aflatoxins, zearalenone and its metabolites from food and biological samples

Aflatoxins, zearalenone and its metabolites, as representative hazard mycotoxins cause adverse effects on food safety and human health. Developing a sensitive and reliable extraction and detection method is of great importance for monitoring their residue and exposure levels. In contrast to traditional trial-and-error selection steps, 4,4',4″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) trianiline covalent-bonding with 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde, namely TAPT-OH-COF was screened as a potential adsorbent utilizing density functional theory calculations prior to the synthesis procedure. After experimental verification, magnetic TAPT-OH-COFs were prepared, characterized and applied for the extraction of aflatoxins, zearalenone and its metabolites from food and biological samples, coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrophy detection. Under the optimal conditions, the developed method exhibited low limits of quantification (0.05-0.50 μg/kg), satisfactory recoveries (75.8 %-110.9 %) and good precision with intraday and interday relative standard deviations (RSDs) not exceeding 12.2 %. This study may provide great potential for the selection of candidate adsorbents for multi-mycotoxins extraction from complex samples.

Fast and efficient extraction and determination of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs using poly(8-hydroxyquinoline)-coated magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite prior to capillary electrophoresis analysis in wastewater, breast milk, and urine samples

In this study, magnetic graphene oxide coated with poly(8-hydroxyquinoline) was successfully synthesized, characterized, and utilized as a novel sorbent for the ultrasonic-assisted dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction of naproxen and ibuprofen. These analytes served as representative analytes for two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in various real samples. Characterization techniques, such as IR, X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray-mapping, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), were used to confirm the correctness synthesis and preparation of the nanocomposites. Effective parameters on the extraction efficiency were investigated to maximize the analytical performance of the developed method. The dynamic range (1-1000 µg L-1), coefficients of determination (R2 ≥ 0.997), the limits of detection (0.3-1.0 µg L-1), and limit of quantification (1.0-3.0 µg L-1), intra-day and inter-day precisions (3.5%-7.2%) were achieved. The method validation results showed extraction recovery ranging from 80.4% to 96.0% and preconcentration factors ranging from 137 to 140.

Simultaneously Selective Separation of Zearalenone and Four Aflatoxins From Rice Samples Using Co-Pseudo-Template Imprinted Polymers With MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 as Core

A novel approach for the simultaneous separation of zearalenone (ZEN) and four types of aflatoxins (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1 and AFG2) from rice samples was presented. This approach utilized modified MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 as core, with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) serving as the shell. The MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 was prepared via ring-opening reaction, while the imprinted polymers were synthesized using warfarin and 4-methylumbelliferyl acetate as co-pseudo template, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker and azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The resulting co-pseudo-template-MIPs (CPT-MIPs) were thoroughly characterized and evaluated. Adsorption studies demonstrate that the adsorption process of CPT-MIPs follows a chemical monolayer adsorption mechanism, with imprinted factors ranging from 1.24 to 1.52 and selective factors ranging from 1.29 to 1.52. Self-made columns were prepared, and the method for separation was developed and validated. The limit of detections ranged from 0.12 to 2.09 μg/kg, and the limit of qualifications ranged from 1.2 to 6.25 μg/kg. To assess the reliability of the method, ZEN and AFs were spiked at three different levels, and the recoveries ranged from 79.53 to 94.58%, with relative standard deviations of 2.90-5.78%.

Fabrication of amino- and hydroxyl dual-functionalized magnetic microporous organic network for extraction of zearalenone from traditional Chinese medicine prior to the HPLC determination

Efficient enrichment of trace zearalenone (ZEN) from the complex traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) samples is quite difficult, but of great significance for TCM quality control. Herein, we reported a novel magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) strategy for ZEN enrichment using the amino- and hydroxyl dual-functionalized magnetic microporous organic network (Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH) as an advanced adsorbent combined with the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination. Efficient extraction of ZEN was achieved via the possible hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, and π-π interactions between Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH and ZEN. The adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH for ZEN was 215.0 mg g-1 at the room temperature, which was much higher than most of the reported adsorbents. Under the optimal condition, the developed Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH-MSPE-HPLC method exhibited wide linear range (5-2500 μg L-1), low limits of detection (1.4-35 μg L-1), less adsorbent consumption (5 mg), and large enhancement factor (95) for ZEN. The proposed method was successfully applied to detect trace ZEN from 10 kinds of real TCM samples. Conclusively, this work demonstrates the Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH can effectively extract trace ZEN from the complex TCM matrices, which may open up a new way for the application of MONs in the enrichment and extraction of trace contaminants or active constituents from the complex TCM samples.

Selective adsorption of zearalenone by a novel magnetic molecularly imprinted carbon nanomaterial

In this paper, the objective is to immobilize molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) onto the surface of magnetic carbon nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2@C) to develop an effective method for the adsorption of zearalenone (ZEN). The prepared products were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XRD, VSM, TGA, and BET. The content of zearalenone in corn samples was monitored by HPLC. The results indicate that the particle size of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) is approximately 200 nm. The adsorption mechanism of MMIPs was confirmed by static adsorption and dynamic adsorption experiments. The maximum adsorption capacity was 1.56 mg/g, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 50 min. The scatchard model showed that MMIPs had two binding sites, a high-affinity binding site and a low-affinity site. Kinetic second-order fitting indicates that MMIPs are mainly through chemisorption. In the actual sample application, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.3 mg/L and 0.9 mg/L, respectively. The recovery of corn with the standard addition of ZEN was 73.6-88.1%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 2.86-5.63%. The results demonstrated that MMIPs possess the advantages of straightforward operation, high precision, and cost-effectiveness, rendering them suitable for rapid ZEN detection.

The construction of highly selective surface molecularly imprinted polymers based on Cu(II) coordination for the detection of bisphenol A

Herein, we designed and constructed a highly selective MIPs for bisphenol A (BPA) named Cu-MIPs@CS based on Cu(II) coordination. The synthesis of Cu-MIPs@CS employed a dummy template strategy and surface imprinting technology, with chitosan (CS) as the substrate linked to imprinted layers via Cu2+ bridging. 4-vinylpyridine acted as the functional monomer, capable of forming a complex with the template ketoprofen, while ethylene glycol dimethacrylate served as the cross linker. Cu-MIPs@CS exhibited a significantly enhanced imprinting factor of 14.78 for BPA, which was approximately 6.6 times higher than that of imprinted materials without Cu2+ (MIPs@CS). Cu-MIPs@CS exhibited a selective factor of 12.74 towards resorcinol, which possessed identical functional groups but a smaller size than BPA, representing an enhancement of selectivity by 12.25-fold compared to MIPs@CS. More importantly, Cu-MIPs@CS exhibited a superior discrimination ability between BPA and its structural analogue, diphenolic acid, with an excellent selective factor of 2.93, highlighting its significance in distinguish the structural analogue of BPA. In contrast, MIPs@CS lack sufficient selectivity to differentiate between them. Through exploration of adsorption mechanism of Cu-MIPs@CS, it was demonstrated that the incorporation of Cu2+ significantly reduced nonspecific adsorption, but also facilitated the creation of more selective imprinted cavities by introducing metal coordination, thereby notably enhancing the selectivity of Cu-MIPs@CS. Finally, the developed Cu-MIPs@CS were applied as the solid phase extraction adsorbent and combined with HPLC-DAD detection to establish an analytical method towards BPA in drinking water samples. The limit of detection of the method was 0.14 μg L-1 and recoveries ranged from 95.6 % to 101 %. This work provided broad prospects for construction of highly selective MIPs and accurate quantification of trace amounts of BPA.

Pore Size Adjustment Strategy for the Fabrication of Molecularly Imprinted Covalent Organic Framework Nanospheres at Room Temperature for Selective Extraction of Zearalenone in Cereal Samples

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are attractive adsorbents for sample pretreatment due to their unique structure and properties. However, the selectivity of COFs for the extraction of hazardous compounds is still limited due to the lack of specific interactions between COFs and targets. Herein, we report a pore size adjustment strategy for room-temperature synthesis of molecularly imprinted COF (MICOF) for selective extraction of zearalenone (ZEN) in complex food samples. The three-dimensional building block tetra(4-aminophenyl) methane was used as a functional monomer, while dialdehyde monomers with different numbers of benzene ring were used to adjust the pore size of MICOF to match with the size of ZEN molecules. The prepared MICOF gave the largest adsorption capacity of 177.2 mg g-1 and the highest imprinting factor of 10.1 for ZEN so far. MICOF was used as the adsorbent for dispersed solid-phase extraction in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography for the determination of trace ZEN in cereals. The high selectivity of the developed method allows simple aqueous standard calibration for the matrix effect-free determination of ZEN in food samples. The limit of detection and the recoveries of the developed method were 0.21 μg kg-1 and 93.7-101.4%, respectively. The precision for the determination of ZEN was less than 3.8% (RSD, n = 6). The developed method is promising for the selective determination of ZEN in complex matrices.

Mycotoxins-Imprinted Polymers: A State-of-the-Art Review

Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites of molds which can contaminate food and beverages. Because of their acute and chronic toxicity, they can have harmful effects when ingested or inhaled, posing severe risks to human health. Contemporary analytical methods have the sensitivity required for contamination detection and quantification, but the direct application of these methods on real samples is not straightforward because of matrix complexity, and clean-up and preconcentration steps are needed, more and more requiring the application of highly selective solid-phase extraction materials. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are artificial receptors mimicking the natural antibodies that are increasingly being used as a solid phase in extraction methods where selectivity towards target analytes is mandatory. In this review, the state-of-the-art about molecularly imprinted polymers as solid-phase extraction materials in mycotoxin contamination analysis will be discussed, with particular attention paid to the use of mimic molecules in the synthesis of mycotoxin-imprinted materials, to the application of these materials to food real samples, and to the development of advanced extraction methods involving molecular imprinting technology.

PEG-modified halloysite as a hydrophilic interaction and cation exchange mixed-mode sorbent for solid-phase extraction of biogenic amines in fish samples

A novel type of PEG-modified halloysite was prepared and used as a hydrophilic interaction and cation exchange mixed-mode sorbent for solid-phase extraction of biogenic amines in fish samples. The eluates were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection after the derivatization with benzoyl chloride. The developed sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, zeta potential analyzer, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. After the optimization of various parameters influencing the extraction efficiency, the PEG-modified halloysite-based SPE method was evaluated. The adsorption capacities of putrescine, spermine, phenethylamine, and histamine were as high as 9.3, 8.5, 5.7, and 5.6 mg g-1, respectively. Satisfactory reproducibility of sorbent preparation was obtained with within-batch and batch-to-batch relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 3.9% and 8.6%, respectively. The biogenic amine spiking recoveries in fish samples ranged from 84.3 to 105.5% with good RSDs lower than 7.8%. Intra-day and inter-day precision, expressed as RSDs, were better than 8.8%. The limits of detection of histamine, putrescine, phenethylamine, and spermine were 9.4, 1.9, 0.5, and 0.9 μg L-1, respectively. This work provides a new hydrophilic interaction and cation exchange mixed-mode sorbent and is successfully applied to the extraction of trace biogenic amines from fish samples.

Rapid Screening of Nonalkaloid α-Glucosidase Inhibitors from a Mulberry Twig Extract Using Enzyme-Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles Coupled with UPLC-MS/MS

Mulberry twigs are an important source of α-glucosidase inhibitors. To date, research studies on α-glucosidase in mulberry twigs have mainly focused on alkaloids such as 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ). Preliminary studies have shown that there may be more active nonalkaloid α-glucosidase inhibitors in mulberry twigs. In this study, we immobilized α-glucosidase on Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ for the first time and rapidly screened four nonalkaloid α-glucosidase inhibitors (kuwanon G, kuwanon C, kuwanon H, and morusin) using ligand fishing technology with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) from the mulberry twig extract of Jialing 20, the excellent artificial triploid variety of mulberry cultivated extensively in Southwest China. The half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC₅₀) of kuwanon H and kuwanon G were 2.82 ± 0.68 and 2.83 ± 0.31 μM, respectively, with better inhibition activity than that of DNJ (with an IC₅₀ of 7.04 ± 0.82 μM). Meanwhile, the molecular docking results showed that the action sites of these two isopentenyl flavonoids on α-glucosidase were different from that of DNJ. In brief, this work is beneficial to discovering new α-glucosidase inhibitors from mulberry twigs quickly and accurately and provides a theoretical basis for the mulberry twig extract as a functional food or a natural hypoglycemic drug source, as well as a reference for directional breeding of mulberry, which greatly improves the exploitation and utilization value of mulberry twigs as an agricultural byproduct in the fields of agricultural production, functional food, and natural medicine.

Hydrophilic Covalent Organic Frameworks Coated Steel Sheet As a Mass Spectrometric Ionization Source for the Direct Determination of Zearalenone and Its Derivatives

Zearalenone has attracted worldwide attention due to its toxic properties and threat to public health. A rapid determination method for zearalenone and its derivatives by hydrophilic covalent organic frameworks coated steel sheet (HCOFCS) combined with ambient mass spectrometry (AMS) was developed. The HCOFCS behaved as both a tip for solid-phase microextraction and a solid substrate for electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). To evaluate the HCOFCS-ESI-MS method, five zearalenone and its derivatives in milk samples were determined, including zearalenone (ZEA), α-zearalenol (α-ZEL), β-zearalenol (β-ZEL), α-zearalanol (α-ZAL), and β-zearalanol (β-ZAL). After the extraction procedure, the HCOFCS was directly added with a high voltage for ESI-MS, and the analysis could be completed within 1 min. The developed method showed good linearity in the range 0.1-100 μg/L with a coefficient of determination (R²) > 0.9991. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantitation (LOQs) ranged from 0.05 to 0.1 and 0.2 to 0.3 μg/L, respectively. The results demonstrated that the HCOFCS combined with ESI-MS can be used for the rapid and sensitive determination of trace ZEA and its derivatives in milk samples with satisfactory recoveries from 80.58% to 109.98% and reproducibility with relative standard deviations (RSDs) no more than 11.18%. Furthermore, HCOFCS showed good reusability, which could reuse at least 10 extraction cycles with satisfactory adsorption performance.

C18-modified halloysite as a novel sorbent in matrix solid-phase dispersion for the extraction of bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol from human placenta

In the current study, the C18-modified halloysite was fabricated via silylation reaction and subsequently used as sorbent in matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) for the extraction of bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol from human placenta, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis. The as-prepared sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. Varied parameters such as methanol concentration in wash solvent, pH and salt concentration in elution solvent, elution volume, and mass ratio of sample to sorbent were optimized. The adsorption capacities of bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol on the developed C18-modified halloysite were 6.3 and 14.2 mg g^-1, respectively, higher than those on the commercial C18 silica gel. Under the optimal condition, the average recoveries of bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol by MSPD varied from 91.0 to 106.0%, and the relative standard deviations were less than 10.6% for human placenta samples. The limits of detection in the human placenta were 0.2 μg kg^-1 for bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol. The simple C18-modified halloysite-based MSPD method holds great potential for the determination of trace bisphenol A and diethylstilbestrol in the human placenta and other tissues of pregnant women with high sensitivity, accuracy, and reliability.

PVA/Stevia/MIL-88A@AuNPs composite nanofibers as a novel sorbent for simultaneous extraction of eight agricultural pesticides in food and vegetable samples followed by HPLC-UV analysis

Herein, an electrospun composite from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and Stevia extract as a cross-linked nanofibrous was prepared with incorporating Fe-metal organic framework@Au nanoparticles (MIL-88A@AuNPs). The final composite was characterized, and then used as an efficient sorbent in pipette-tip micro solid-phase extraction (PT-µSPE) of eight selected pesticides in food samples followed by HPLC-UV analysis. Under the opted conditions, the linearity was in the range of 1.0-1000.0 ng mL^-1 for atrazine and ametryn, 3.0-1500.0 ng mL^-1 for tribenuron-methyl, metribuzin, profenofos and chlorpyrifos, 5.0 to 1500.0 ng mL^-1 for phosalone, and 5.0-2000.0 ng mL^-1 for malation with coefficient of determination (r²) ≥ 0.9943. The LODs (based on S/N = 3) ranged from 0.3 to 1.5 ng m L^-1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were between 5.2% and 6.6% (intra-day, n = 5) and 5.9%-7.4% (inter-day, n = 3) for three consecutive days. Ultimately, the capability of the method in various food samples was appraised with good recoveries (79.3 to 97.6%).

Evaluation of nano-silica, microwave heating, and ultraviolet irradiation effects on zearalenone detoxification in sunflower oils

In the present study, we report three methods of silica nanoparticles (SNPs) as adsorbent, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and microwave heating and evaluate their capabilities in reducing and eliminating zearalenone (ZEN). The offered method not only was used for ZEN detoxification, but also greatly enhanced the sensitivity of ZEN measurement. The aim of this study was to evaluate ZEN concentration in sunflower oil samples by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. This method was successfully validated for sunflower oil samples while the limit of detection (LOD) method (signal-to-noise ratio of 3:1) was 0.5 μg/l. The acquired removal data with the HPLC method through SNPs were fitted well with Freundlich isotherm, denoting that the multi-layer adsorption took place on the adsorbent. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of ZEN was 61.02 μg/g in an optimum time of 240 min on SNPs. The experimental results were evaluated by the adsorption kinetic model, which specified the adsorption kinetics of ZEN on SNPs, obeying the pseudo-second order model. This model demonstrated that the sorption rate depended on the sorption capacity but not the concentration of the sorbate. Moreover, the method presented to determine ZEN based on the use of SNPs in sunflower oil was accomplished by the adsorption process. Furthermore, the removal efficiencies of ZEN by SNPs, UV irradiation, and microwave heating were compared and obtained to be 92.1, 96.22, and 37.30%, respectively for determined times. These results confirm the removal efficiency of these methods is sensitive enough to ZEN analysis in sunflower oil samples.

Novel electrochemical sensor modified with molecularly imprinted polymers for determination of enrofloxacin in marine environment

Molecularly imprinted polymers were synthesized by gel-sol method with multi-walled carbon nanotubes as support and enrofloxacin as a template and further modified on the surface of glassy carbon electrode to construct a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor. The performance of the imprinted electrochemical sensor was thoroughly investigated by using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The influence of imprinted polymers amount, electrolyte pH, and incubation time on the sensor performance was investigated for the detection of enrofloxacin. Under the optimal experimental conditions in a three-electrode system with the modified electrode as the working electrode the differential pulse voltammetry response current of the sensor had a good linear relationship at 0.2 V (vs. saturated calomel reference electrode) with the enrofloxacin concentration within 2.8 pM-28 μM and the limit of detection of the method was 0.9 pM. The competitive interference experiment showed that the imprinted electrochemical sensor could selectively recognize enrofloxacin. The method was applied to analyze spiked natural seawater, fish, and shrimp samples. The recovery was 96.4%-102%, and RSD was less than 4.3% (n = 3), indicating that the proposed imprinted electrochemical sensor was suitable for the determination of trace enrofloxacin in marine environment samples.

Development of poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/aloe vera gel electrospun composite nanofibers as a novel sorbent for thin-film micro-extraction of pesticides in water and food samples followed by HPLC-UV analysis

Highly effective pre-concentration of thymol and carvacrol using nano-sized magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer based on experimental design optimization and their trace determination in summer savoury, Origanum majorana and Origanum vulgare extracts

To ascertain thymol and carvacrol in pharmaceutical syrups, a valid and effective magnetic molecular imprinted polymer dispersive solid phase microextraction (MMIP-DSPME) process was developed in this study, which was in combination with a high performance liquid chromatography-ultra violet (HPLC-UV) technique for the assessment of thymol and carvacrol separation and pre-concentration. Contact time, eluent kind and volume, pH, the mass of the MMIP were all taken into consideration as key factors. Design expert and multi-objective response surface methodology (RSM) were used to optimize these variables. The mass of the MMIP, sample pH, eluent kind, time of sorption, the volume of eluent, and time of elution were 10 mg, 6, acetonitrile, 28 min, 200 µL, and 5.5 min, respectively, for the maximum extraction recovery of the analytes. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.042 ng mL^-1 at the optimal conditions, while the value for the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.140 ng mL^-1. At the optimized conditions for thymol and carvacrol, the suggested MMIP sorbent had sorption capacities of 64.1 and 72.6 mg g^-1, respectively. Furthermore, for triplicate measurements, the linear dynamic range (LDR) was 0.40-5000 ng mL^-1, and the method's accuracy (RSD %) was 6.26%. The saturation magnetization for the MMIP was 19.0 emu g^-1 obtained by VSM, allowing the sorbent to be separated quickly. The sorption experiments confirmed the large sorption capacity of the MMIP for thymol and carvacrol, as well as its homogeneous binding sites. The extraction recovery for thymol and carvacrol was 96.9-103.8% and 96.6-105.4%, respectively, at all spiked amounts (20, 100, 200, and 500 ng mL^-1). The findings of seven desorption-regeneration cycles using MMIP demonstrated the high stability of the sorbent. The MMIP revealed a particular behavior of sorption for thymol and carvacrol, implying a selective, simple, effective, and flexible analytical method.

Fast construction of core-shell structured magnetic covalent organic framework as sorbent for solid-phase extraction of zearalenone and its derivatives prior to their determination by UHPLC-MS/MS

Magnetic covalent organic framework nanocomposite denoted as Fe₃O₄@TAPB-Tp with core-shell structure was fabricated via a simple template-mediated precipitation polymerization method at mild conditions. The polyimine network shell was created through the polymerization of 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)-benzene (TAPB) and 1,3,5-triformyl-phloroglucinol (Tp) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) by the Schiff-base reaction. Featuring with large specific surface area (163.19 m² g^-1), good solution dispersibility, and high stability, the obtained Fe₃O₄@TAPB-Tp exhibited high adsorption capacities and fast adsorption for zearalenone and its derivatives (ZEAs). The adsorption isotherms showed multilayer adsorption dominated at low concentration and monolayer adsorption at high concentration between the interface of ZEAs and Fe₃O₄@TAPB-Tp. With the Fe₃O₄@TAPB-Tp as sorbent, a magnetic solid-phase extraction-ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was established for simultaneous adsorption and detection of five ZEAs in complex samples. The proposed method displayed favorable linearity, low limits of detection (0.003 ~ 0.018 μg kg^-1), and good repeatability (2.37~10.4%). The developed method has been applied for real sample analysis, with recoveries of 81.27~90.26%. These results showed that Fe₃O₄@TAPB-Tp has a good application potential for the adsorption of ZEAs in food samples. Magnetic covalent organic framework nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@TAPB-Tp) were quickly fabricated at mild conditions and used as effective adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of zearalenone and its derivatives (ZEAs) from food samples prior to ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) analysis.

Molecularly imprinted polymers in toxicology: a literature survey for the last 5 years

The science of toxicology dates back almost to the beginning of human history. Toxic chemicals, which are encountered in different forms, are always among the chemicals that should be investigated in criminal field, environmental application, pharmaceutic, and even industry, where many researches have been carried out studies for years. Almost all of not only drugs but also industrial dyes have toxic side and direct effects. Environmental micropollutants accumulate in the tissues of all living things, especially plants, and show short- or long-term toxic symptoms. Chemicals in forensic science can be known by detecting the effect they cause to the body with the similar mechanism. It is clear that the best tracking tool among analysis methods is molecularly printed polymer-based analytical setups. Different polymeric combinations of molecularly imprinted polymers allow further study on detection or extraction using chromatographic and spectroscopic instruments. In particular, methods used in forensic medicine can detect trace amounts of poison or biological residues on the scene. Molecularly imprinted polymers are still in their infancy and have many variables that need to be developed. In this review, we summarized how molecular imprinted polymers and toxicology intersect and what has been done about molecular imprinted polymers in toxicology by looking at the studies conducted in the last 5 years.

The Existing Methods and Novel Approaches in Mycotoxins' Detection

Mycotoxins represent a wide range of secondary, naturally occurring and practically unavoidable fungal metabolites. They contaminate various agricultural commodities like cereals, maize, peanuts, fruits, and feed at any stage in pre- or post-harvest conditions. Consumption of mycotoxin-contaminated food and feed can cause acute or chronic toxicity in human and animals. The risk that is posed to public health have prompted the need to develop methods of analysis and detection of mycotoxins in food products. Mycotoxins wide range of structural diversity, high chemical stability, and low concentrations in tested samples require robust, effective, and comprehensible detection methods. This review summarizes current methods, such as chromatographic and immunochemical techniques, as well as novel, alternative approaches like biosensors, electronic noses, or molecularly imprinted polymers that have been successfully applied in detection and identification of various mycotoxins in food commodities. In order to highlight the significance of sampling and sample treatment in the analytical process, these steps have been comprehensively described.

Ultrasound-assisted solid phase microextraction-HPLC method based on Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-molecularly imprinted polymer magnetic nano-sorbent for rapid and efficient extraction of harmaline from Peganum harmala extract

In the present study, a magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) was synthesized for the extraction of harmaline from Peganum harmala by dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME). The MMIP for selective and intelligent extraction of harmaline with excellent functionality and high selectivity was synthesized using the sol-gel method with functionalized superparamagnetic core-shell nanoparticles, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) as a cross-linker, methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer, and 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as a porogen. To study the properties and morphology of the coated polymer, FT-IR spectroscopy, FESEM, TEM images, and VSM were used. The DSPME-HPLC-UV equipment was used to quantify and analyze the data obtained from harmaline extraction. In this research, the efficiency of the synthesized polymer in harmaline extraction was modeled and optimized using the response surface methodology based on central composite design (RSM-CCD). In addition, for modeling the isotherm of harmaline sorption by the MMIP, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations were used. The obtained results showed that the extraction of harmaline with the MMIP was well described with Freundlich isotherm. The results of the validation of the method showed that the measurement of harmaline in the concentration range of 1.0-4000 ng mL^-1 followed a linear relationship (R² = 9986.0). Moreover, the accuracy or repeatability index (% RSD) was determined to be < 10, and the LOQ and LOD values were 0.526 and 0.158 ng mL^-1, respectively. The results of this study showed that the DSPME technique by using the synthesized MMIP as an effective sorbent with high efficiency and capacity could be utilized for pre-concentration and extraction of harmaline from real and complex samples.

Highly selective magnetic dual template molecularly imprinted polymer for simultaneous enrichment of sulfadiazine and sulfathiazole from milk samples based on syringe-to-syringe magnetic solid-phase microextraction

Antibiotics, such as sulfadiazine and sulfathiazole, are widely used in veterinary applications which can result in remains in edible animal products. Therefore, there is an immense need for a reliable, selective, sensitive, and simple analytical technique for monitoring the concentration of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfathiazole (STZ) in edible animal products. In this regard, we developed a magnetic dual template molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) to determine the SDZ and STZ in milk samples. For the sensitive and selective extraction and determination of target analytes, MMIPs have been combined with the syringe-to-syringe magnetic solid-phase microextraction (SS-MSPME) method. In addition, we used central composite design (CCD) for the extraction of SDZ and STZ. With optimum conditions, an efficient, rapid, and convenient technique for the preconcentration and determination of SDZ and STZ in milk samples by SS-MSPME coupling with HPLC-UV was developed. Using our combined approach, the limits of detection are 0.9 and 1.3 ng mL^-1 for SDZ and STZ, respectively, along with good linearity and determination coefficients higher than 0.98. Our method demonstrates a practical approach for the deduction of antibiotics in milk samples with high recoveries and selectivity.

Novel bayberry-and-honeycomb-like magnetic surface molecularly imprinted polymers for the selective enrichment of rutin from Sophora japonica

Rutin (RT), a widely distributed natural flavonoid compound, has been generally utilized as an important active ingredient owing to its considerable biomedical and economic value. Inspired by the structure features of densely-packed bayberry and well-orientated honeycomb, a novel type of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (HB-TI-MMIPs) with abundant high-affinity and uniformly-distributed binding sites was rationally constructed for the selective enrichment of RT from Sophora japonica. The polymerization conditions, physicochemical properties, and adsorption performance of the imprinted nanomaterials were systematically investigated. The optimized HB-TI-MMIPs display a high adsorption capacity, fast adsorption rate, and satisfactory selectivity towards RT. Meanwhile, the proposed analytical methodology using HPLC, with HB-TI-MMIPs as adsorbents, successfully applied to enrich and detect RT from Sophora japonica with high recoveries (87.2-94.6%) and good RSDs (lower than 4.3%). Therefore, the fabricated HB-TI-MMIPs with a fast magnetic responsivity and desirable adsorption performance would be attractive in plant active ingredients extraction fields.

Novel fluorescence immunoassay for the detection of zearalenone using HRP-mediated fluorescence quenching of gold-silver bimetallic nanoclusters

In the presented study, a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mediated ratiometric fluorescence enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for zearalenone (ZEN) was reported based on fluorescence quenching of gold-silver bimetallic nanoclusters (Au-Ag NCs). HRP-antibody was used as a bridge in this immunoassay, linking the ratiometric fluorescence signal to the ZEN concentration. HRP catalyzed the oxidization of o-phenylenediamine in the presence of H₂O₂, leading to the formation of 2,3-diaminophenazine, which not only delivered a new peak at 580 nm but also quenched Au-Ag NCs fluorescence at 690 nm. Under optimal conditions, the detection limit for the proposed ELISA was 0.017 ng/mL, which was approximately 6.6-fold lower than conventional ELISA. Moreover, analytical performances were evaluated fully including specificity, accuracy, precision, and practicability, and showed that this method provides a potential platform for sensitive and reliable detection of ZEN.

Design and Preparation of Molecularly Imprinted Membranes for Selective Separation of Acteoside

Acteoside (ACT) belongs to a type of phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs), and it is worthy of obtaining high-purity due to its significant medicinal functions. In this study, a novel class of MIMs was designed and synthesized with PVDF membranes as the base membrane for high selective separation and enrichment of ACT. The effects of the different functional monomers, the amounts of functional monomers, crosslinking agents, and initiators on the separation properties of MIMs were investigated. Furthermore, adsorption ability, permeation capacity, and reusability of MIMs were discussed for ACT. It indicated that MIM7 was the optimal performance of MIMs. The adsorption ability of MIM7 for ACT was 62.83 mg/g, and the selectivity factor (α) of MIM7 was up to 2.74 and its permeability factor (β) was greater than 2.66. Moreover, the adsorption amount of MIM7 was still more than 88.57% of the initial value after five cycles. As an ACT imprinted layer of MIMs only had recognition sites for ACT molecules, which recombined with the recognition sites in the membrane permeation experiment, ACT molecules penetration was hindered. However, the analogs of ECH successfully passed MIMs. It indicated that the selective MIMs for ACT followed the mechanism of delayed permeation. This work provides an important reference for the high permselective separation of natural products.

Application of surface-imprinted polymers supported by hydroxyapatite in the extraction of zearalenone in various cereals

Surface-imprinted polymers supported by hydroxyapatite (HAP@MIPs) were prepared using coumarin-3-carboxylic acid and naringenin as dummy template molecules of zearalenone (ZEA). HAP@MIPs were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, particle size distribution analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption performance was studied. The results showed that it could reach the adsorption equilibrium within 6 min. The adsorption amount could reach 6.77 μg mg^-1, while the concentration was 20 μg mL^-1. The self-made solid-phase extraction (SPE) columns were prepared with HAP@MIPs as sorbents for the separation and purification of ZEA in cereal samples. The method was established by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The recoveries were in the range of 70.09-101.88%; the relative standard deviation was 2.06-8.47%. Finally, millet, coix lachryma, and corn were placed under extreme conditions to produce ZEA. The method was used to extract and analyze ZEA in the above samples. The results showed that self-made SPE columns with HPLC could be used for the separation and enrichment of ZEA in real samples. Graphical abstract.

A new type of magnetic molecular imprinted material combined with β-cyclodextrin for the selective adsorption of zearalenone
