Abstract
With the increasing demand for meat products, the evaluation and real-time monitoring of its freshness has become one of the focuses of related industry research. Conventional freshness detection methods, including sensory evaluation, microbial experiments, and determination of physicochemical indicators, are time-consuming, low sensitivity, and destructive, so there is an urgent need to develop a convenient, intuitive, and inexpensive detection method. As a representative of smart packaging, visual intelligent labels can realize real-time perception and monitoring of meat freshness by measuring the temperature, pH value or other indicators of meat and converting them into visual signals. This paper first summarizes the common types, basic principles and research progress of visual intelligent labels, then introduces its application in livestock, poultry and seafood freshness monitoring, finally looks forward to the development prospect of visual smart labels.

Abstract
The development of biopolymer-based films represents a promising direction in the packaging industry that responds to stringent needs for sustainability, reducing the ecological impact. Traditional fossil-derived polymers present major concerns because of their long decomposition time and their significant contribution to the pollution of the environment. On the contrary, biopolymers such as chitosan, PVA, and PLA offer viable alternatives. This study aimed to obtain an innovative pH indicator for smart packaging using a synthetic non-toxic anthocyanin analogue dye incorporated in bio-based films to indicate meat freshness and quality. The pH-responsive color-changing properties of the dye make it suitable for developing intelligent films to monitor food freshness. The obtained polymeric films were characterized by FT-IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy, and their thermal properties were assessed using thermogravimetric methods. Moisture content, swelling capacity, and water solubility of the polymeric films were also evaluated. The sensitivity of the biopolymer-flavylium composite films to pH variations was studied in the pH range of 2 to 12 and noticeable color variations were observed, allowing the monitoring of the meat's quality damage through pH changes. The pH-responsive films were applied directly on the surface or in the proximity of pork and chicken meat samples, to evaluate their colorimetric response to fresh and spoilt meat. This study can be the starting point for creating more durable packaging solutions leading to a circular economy.

Abstract
Food smart packaging has emerged as a promising technology to address consumer concerns regarding food conservation and food safety. In this context, we report the rational design of azide-containing pyranoflavylium-based pH-sensitive dye for subsequent click chemistry conjugation toward a chitosan-modified alkyne. The chitosan-pyranoflavylium conjugate was characterized by infrared (ATR-FTIR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and dynamic light scattering (DLS), as well as its thermodynamic parameters related to their pH-dependent chromatic features. The fabrication of thin-films through electrostatic-driven layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technology was first screened by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) onto gold substrates, and then free-standing (FS) multilayered membranes from polypropylene substrate were obtained using a homemade automatic dipping robot. The membranes' characterization included morphology analysis and thickness evaluation, assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), pH-responsive color change performance tests using buffer solutions at different pH levels, and biogenic amines-enriched model solutions, demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of the chitosan-pyranoflavylium/alginate biomembranes for food spoilage monitoring. This work provides insights toward the development of innovative pH-responsive smart biomaterials for advanced and sustainable technological packaging solutions, which could significantly contribute to ensuring food safety and quality, while reducing food waste.

Abstract
Pork is widely consumed worldwide, and many consumers now utilize sensory evaluation techniques to determine the freshness of pork when buying it. A color-changing ink label utilizing bromocresol purple (BCP) and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) had been created to help consumers better and more rapidly determine the freshness of pork while it is stored. The ink was easy to prepare and could be readily transferred to A4 paper using screen printing technology. This study delved deeper into the impact of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) on the functional properties of inks to enhance printing performance. The experiment demonstrated that a 1 % mass fraction of HEC improved thixotropy and facilitated the even distribution of ink on A4 paper, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Screen-printed labels with varying concentrations displayed distinct color change rates when stored at different temperatures, indicating their capability to assess pork freshness. FT-IR, laboratory, and stability tests verified the ink's exceptional color change capabilities and printing attributes. An analysis using the Arrhenius equation revealed a substantial synergistic effect between BCP and NHPI, resulting in improved sensitivity and accuracy of the ink. This study offers a practical and feasible method to monitor the storage quality of pork effectively.

Abstract
Biogenic amines (BAs) are biologically active nitrogen-containing compounds formed during the food spoilage process and are often related as key markers of food quality, safety, and freshness. Because their presence in foods at high levels can cause significant health problems, researchers have been focused on developing novel strategies and methods for early detection and capture of these analytes. Herein, water-soluble sulfonated calix[n]arene macrocycles (SC4, SC6, and SC8) and a pH-sensitive dye (4'-hydroxy-10-methylpyranoflavylium) were investigated as host-guest systems for BA sensing. The hosts were able to bind the flavylium cation of the dye with association constants of 103 to 104 M-1. The dye complexation also allowed tuning its pKa from 6.72 (free) toward high values: 7.68 (SC4), 7.79 (SC6), and 8.45 (SC8). These data were crucial to optimize the host-guest complexes as optical sensing systems for putrescine/tyramine (pH 7.2-7.6), yielding a colorimetric redshift from yellow to red. The BA sensing was also demonstrated by fluorescence quenching for the calix[n]arene/dye complexes and fluorescence recovery after the addition of BAs. 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to demonstrate the interaction mode, confirming an encapsulation-driven mechanism. Overall, these host-guest systems demonstrated great potential for the detection of BAs, one of the main key markers of food spoilage.

Abstract
Plastic waste has become a big problem for the environment globally. Biodegradable polymers are a potential replacement for plastics that can have a positive outcome both environmentally and economically. In this work, we used acid hydrolysis and alkaline treatment to extract cellulose fibers from cattails. The obtained cellulose was used as a substrate for the fabrication of cellulose film using a casting technique on plastic plates. Different concentrations of the plasticizer, glycerol, were used to prepare films for comparison, and its effects on the film's characteristics were observed. The morphology, chemical structure, and thermal stability of the cattail cellulose (CTC) films were studied using techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Measurements of transparency, moisture content (MC), water solubility (MS), and water contact angle (WCA) were also performed. Introducing glycerol into the films increased the transparency, MC, and WS values, as well as the gap width between film textures. However, it resulted in a decrease in the WCA of the films, showing that the hydrophilicity of the films is increased by the addition of glycerol. The interaction between the functional groups of cellulose and glycerol was established from the ATR-FTIR and XRD data. The obtained results indicated that glycerol affected the thermal stability and the degree of crystallinity of the produced films. Accordingly, the hydrophilicity of the cellulose film was increased by increasing the glycerol content; therefore, cattail cellulose films can be used as a biodegradable alternative to plastic in the future.

Abstract
The recovery of food by-products is of great significance. Food by-products contain diverse materials showing promise for the development of food packaging or edible coatings. In the present study, the effects of banana flower bract anthocyanin extracts (BFBAEs) on properties of longan seed starch (LSS) films were investigated for the first time. The prepared BFBAEs presented great compatibility with LSS matrix without changing the film chemical structures. The LSS films containing BFBAEs presented improved UV light barrier capacities, increased water vapor permeability, and lowered thermal stability compared to the pure LSS films. Additionally, the introduction of BFBAEs significantly reduced tensile strength and increased elongation at break of LSS films. There is growing demands for the fabrication of intelligent films for the visible monitoring of food freshness. BFBAEs imparted great antioxidant activities and pH-sensitive and ammonia-sensitive discoloration capacities on LSS films. LSS/BFBAEs III films were employed to detect food (beef and shrimp) freshness, and distinguishable color variations could be observed as the food freshness reduced. The LSS-based films were almost completely degraded after 30 days. Two types of by-products were combined to develop novel biodegradable active films, which showed promise for the discernible detection of the freshness of perishable foods.

Abstract
Sugarcane bagasse and rice straw are major agricultural byproducts often discarded or burned as waste after cultivation, leaving their untapped potential for utilization. In this work, cellulose fibers were extracted from sugarcane bagasse and rice straw using a simple procedure: alkaline treatment with sodium hydroxide, bleaching with sodium hypochlorite, and acid hydrolysis. The obtained cellulosic materials were successfully prepared into milky white and transparent films, of which the transparency slightly decreased with the addition of glycerol. The surface of all the films appeared homogeneous with a random orientation of fibers. The rice-straw (RS) film had a more fragile texture than the sugarcane-bagasse (SBG) film. The FTIR analysis clearly indicated the functional groups of cellulose, as well as glycerol for the films mixed with glycerol. Thermal analysis showed that the native SBG film decomposed at 346 °C, higher than the native RS film (339 °C). The presence of glycerol in the films resulted in slightly lower maximum decomposition temperature (Td,max) values as well as mechanical properties. Regarding water susceptibility, the RS film had a higher percentage than the native SBG and glycerol-mixed SBG films. The extracted cellulose from both sources could form almost spherical-shaped cellulose particles. Thus, through the simple extraction method, sugarcane bagasse and rice straw could serve as excellent sources of cellulose materials for preparing cellulose films and particles, which would be advantageous to the development of cellulose-based materials.

Abstract
Bio-based packaging materials and efficient drug delivery systems have garnered attention in recent years. Among the soluble cellulose derivatives, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) stands out as a promising candidate due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and wide resources. However, CMC-based films have limited mechanical properties, which hinders their widespread application. This paper aims to address this issue by exploring the molecular interactions between CMC and various additives with different molecular structures, using the rheological method. The additives include O-carboxymethylated chitosan (O-CMCh), N-2-hydroxypropyl-3-trimethylammonium-O-carboxymethyl chitosan (HTCMCh), hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and cellulose nanofibers (CNF). By investigating the rheological properties of film-forming solutions, we aimed to elucidate the influencing mechanisms of the additives on CMC-based films at the molecular level. Various factors affecting rheological properties, such as molecular structure, additive concentration, and temperature, were examined. The results revealed that the interactions between CMC and the additives were dependent on the charge of the additives. Electrostatic interactions were observed for HACC and HTCMCh, while O-CMCh, CNC, and CNF primarily interacted through hydrogen bonds. Based on these rheological properties, several systems were selected to prepare the films, which exhibited excellent transparency, wettability, mechanical properties, biodegradability, and absence of cytotoxicity. The desirable characteristics of these selected films demonstrated the strong biocompatibility between CMC and chitosan and cellulose derivatives. This study offers insights into the preparation of CMC-based food packaging materials with specific properties.

Abstract
Packaging plays an important role in food quality and safety, especially regarding waste and spoilage reduction. The main drawback is that the packaging industry is among the ones that is highly dependent on plastic usage. New alternatives to conventional plastic packaging such as biopolymers-based type are mandatory. Examples are cellulose films and its derivatives. These are among the most used options in the food packaging due to their unique characteristics, such as biocompatibility, environmental sustainability, low price, mechanical properties, and biodegradability. Emerging concepts such as active and intelligent packaging provides new solutions for an extending shelf-life, and it fights some limitations of cellulose films and improves the properties of the packaging. This article reviews the available cellulose polymers and derivatives that are used as sustainable alternatives for food packaging regarding their properties, characteristics, and functionalization towards active properties enhancement. In this way, several types of films that are prepared with cellulose and their derivatives, incorporating antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds, are herein described, and discussed.
