Bio-based active food packaging materials: Sustainable alternative to conventional petrochemical-based packaging materials

Improved moisture barrier and mechanical properties of rice protein/sodium alginate films for banana and oil preservation: Effect of the type and addition form of fatty acid

Attenuating the moisture sensitivity of hydrophilic protein/polysaccharide-based films without impairing other properties remains a challenge. Fatty acid dispersed in Pickering emulsion was proposed to overcome such issue. An increase in fatty acid chain length slightly reduced the water vapor permeability (WVP) of emulsion films. As the number of fatty acid double bonds increased from 0 to 1, the WVP of emulsion films was significantly decreased by 14.02% while mechanical properties were significantly enhanced. More hydrogen bonds and stronger electrostatic interactions in the presence of fatty acids were observed by molecular dynamics simulation. The weight loss of bananas coated with oleic acid-incorporated film-forming emulsion was 6.81% lower than that of uncoated group after 4 days, and the corresponding film was more effective to delay oil oxidation than the commercial polypropylene film, indicating that the film is a promising alternative to food coating and packaging material.

Advances in biomaterials based food packaging systems: Current status and the way forward

World hunger is getting worse, while one-third of food produced around the globe is wasted and never consumed. It is vital to reduce food waste to promote the sustainability of food systems, and improved food packaging solutions can augment this effort. The utilization of biomaterials in smart food packaging not only enhances food preservation and safety but also aligns with current demands for eco-friendly technologies to mitigate the impacts of climate change. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the developments in the field of food packaging based on the innovative use of biomaterials. It emphasizes the potential use of biomaterials derived from nature including cellulose, chitosan, keratin, etc. for this purpose. Various smart food packaging technologies such as active and intelligent packaging are discussed in detail including scavenging additives, colour-changing environment indicators, sensors, RFID tags, etc. The article also delves into the utilization of edible films and coatings, nanoparticle fillers and 2D materials in food packaging systems. Furthermore, it outlines the challenges and opportunities in this dynamic domain, emphasizing the ongoing need for research and innovation to shape the future of sustainable and smart food packaging solutions to enhance and monitor the shelf-life of food products.

Enhanced strength, toughness and heat resistance of poly (lactic acid) with good transparency and biodegradability by uniaxial pre-stretching

Sustainable poly (lactic acid) (PLA) with excellent strength, toughness, heat resistance, transparency, and biodegradability was achieved by uniaxial pre-stretching at 70 °C. The effect of pre-stretched ratio (PSR) on the microstructure and properties of the PLA was investigated. The undrawn PLA was brittle. However, after pre-stretching, the elongation at break was increased significantly. The maximum value of 161.2 % was obtained at pre-stretching ratio (PSR) of 1.0. With the increase of PSR, the modulus and strength were improved obviously (from 1601 MPa and 60.2 MPa for undrawn PLA to 2932 MPa and 106.3 MPa for the ps-PLA at PSR =3.0). Meanwhile, the heat resistance of PLA was improved obviously with the increase of PSR. For the ps-PLA3.0, there were almost no deformation and shrink at 140 °C. Interestingly, after pre-stretching, the PLA still maintained the good transparency and biodegradability. The brittleness for undrawn PLA was attributed to the network structure of cohesional entanglements. After pre-stretching, the destruction of the network structure and formation of the orientation, mesophase and oriented nanosized crystalline phase lead to the increased the toughness, strength and heat resistance without sacrificing the transparency and biodegradability. This work provides a significant guidance for the fabrication of PLA material with excellent comprehensive performance including strength, toughness, heat resistance, transparency, and biodegradability.

Novel hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched polymer as a synergistic modifier with tannin for preparation of casein-based films with superior performance

A hyperbranched poly (titanium oxide) (HBPTi) with hydroxyl terminal groups was synthesized via polycondensation reaction as a synergistic modifier with tannin to promote performance of casein-based composite film. The synergistic effects of HBPTis, acquiring different hyperbranched structures, with tannin on the microstructure, mechanical characteristics, barrier against water vapor, and thermal stability of casein-based film were investigated in this work. The tensile strength of the composite films increased from 7.6 MPa to 22.1 MPa, which accounts for 190.79 % increase after the addition of HBPTi compared to casein-tannin films modified with glycerol. The casein-tannin films with the help of HBPTi presented excellent water vapor permeation, thermal stability, and showed nearly 100 % UV absorption in the range 200-400 nm. Additionally, the microstructure of HBPTi modified casein-tannin films tend to be more compact due to the promoted interaction of casein-tannin composite aided by covalent bonding and/or other types of bonding between casein, tannin and HBPTi. Therefore, associative modification using such hyperbranched polymers and tannins provides extendable application value for casein-based films especially as food packaging materials and for other fields as well.

Chemically tailored graphite oxide nanoparticles for improving material properties of canola protein-based films

Canola protein obtained from canola meal, a byproduct of the canola industry, is an economical biopolymer with promising film-forming properties. It has significant potential for use as a food packaging material, though it possesses some functional limitations that need improvement. Incorporating nanomaterials is an option to enhance functional properties. This study aims to produce canola protein films by integrating GO exfoliated at several oxidation times and weight ratios to optimize mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties. Oxidation alters the C/O ratio and adds functional groups that bond with the amino/carboxyl groups of protein, enhancing the film properties. Significant improvement was obtained in GO at 60 and 120 min oxidation time and 3% addition level. Tensile strength and elastic modulus increased 200% and 481.72%, respectively, compared to control. Control films showed a 37.57 × 10-3 cm3m/m2/day/Pa oxygen permeability, and it was significantly reduced to 5.65 × 10-3 cm3m/m2/day/Pa representing a 665% reduction.

Advances in Biodegradable Food Packaging Using Wheat-Based Materials: Fabrications and Innovations, Applications, Potentials, and Challenges

This article explores the advancements in biodegradable food packaging materials derived from wheat. Wheat, a predominant global cereal crop, offers a sustainable alternative to conventional single-use plastics through its starch, gluten, and fiber components. This study highlights the fabrication processes of wheat-based materials, including solvent casting and extrusion, and their applications in enhancing the shelf life and quality of packaged foods. Recent innovations demonstrate effectiveness in maintaining food quality, controlling moisture content, and providing microbiological protection. Despite the promising potential, challenges such as moisture content and interfacial adhesion in composites remain. This review concludes with an emphasis on the environmental benefits and future trends in wheat-based packaging materials.

Modified Chitosan-Based Coating/Packaging Composites with Enhanced Antibacterial, Antioxidant, and UV-Resistant Properties for Fresh Food Preservation

Chitosan-based biomass packaging materials are a promising material for food preservation, but their limited solubility, antioxidant capacity, UV resistance, and mechanical properties severely restrict their application. In this study, we developed a novel chitosan-based coating/packaging composite (QCTO) using quaternary ammonium salt and tannic acid (TA)-modified chitosan (QCS-TA) and oxidized chitosan (OCS). The introduction of quaternary ammonium salt and TA effectively improves the water solubility and antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV-resistant properties of chitosan. The Schiff-base bond formed between OCS and QCS-TA, along with the TA-mediated multiple interactions, conferred the prepared composite film with good mechanical properties (69.9 MPa tensile strength) and gas barrier performance to water (14.3 g·h-1·m-2) and oxygen (3.5 g·mm·m-2·h-1). Meanwhile, the prepared QCTO composites demonstrate excellent biocompatibility and safety and are applied as coatings for strawberries and bananas as well as packaging films for mushrooms. These preservation experiments demonstrated that the prepared composites are able to effectively reduce weight loss, prevent microbial growth, maintain color, and significantly prolong the shelf life of fresh products (bananas, strawberries, and mushrooms extended shelf life by 6, 5, and 6 days, respectively). Therefore, the developed QCTO coating/packaging film shows great potential for applications in the field of food preservation and packaging.

Efficient cellulose dissolution and derivatization enabled by oxalic/sulfuric acid for high-performance cellulose films as food packaging

The performance of cellulose-based materials is highly dependent on the choice of solvent systems. Exceptionally, cellulose dissolution and derivatization by efficient solvent have been considered as a key factor for large-scale industrial applications of cellulose. However, cellulose dissolution and derivatization often requires harsh reaction conditions, high energy consumption, and complex solubilizing, resulting in environmental impacts and low practical value. Here we address these limitations by using a low-temperature oxalic acid/sulfuric acid solvent to enable cellulose dissolution and derivatization for high-performance cellulose films. The dissolution and derivatization mechanism of the mixed acid is studied, demonstrating that cellulose is firstly socked by oxalic acid, then more hydrogen bonds ionized by sulfuric acid break cellulose chain, and finally the esterification reaction between oxalic acid and cellulose is catalyzed by sulfuric acid. Solutions containing 8 %-10 % cellulose are obtained and can be stored for a long time at -18 °C without significant degradation. Moreover, the cellulose film exhibits a higher tensile strength of up to 66.1 MPa, thermal stability, and degree of polymerization compared to that fabricated by sulfuric acid. These unique advantages provide new paths to utilize renewable resources for alternative food packaging materials at an industrial scale.

A comprehensive review of current approaches on food waste reduction strategies

Food waste is a serious worldwide issue that has an impact on the environment, society, and economy. This comprehensive review provides a detailed description of methods and approaches for reducing food waste, emphasizing the necessity of comprehensive strategies to tackle its intricate relationship with environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic prosperity. By scrutinizing the extent and impact of food waste, from initial production stages to final disposal, this comprehensive review underlines the urgent need for integrated solutions that include technological advancements, behavioral interventions, regulatory frameworks, and collaborative endeavors. Environmental assessments highlight the significant contribution of food waste to greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, water scarcity, and energy inefficiency, thereby emphasizing the importance of curtailing its environmental impact. Concurrently, the social and economic consequences of food waste, such as food insecurity, economic losses, and disparities in food access, underscore the imperative for coordinated action across multiple sectors. Food waste can also be effectively reduced by various innovative approaches, such as technological waste reduction solutions, supply chain optimization strategies, consumer behavior-focused initiatives, and waste recovery and recycling techniques. Furthermore, in order to foster an environment that encourages the reduction of food waste and facilitates the transition to a circular economy, legislative changes and regulatory actions are essential. By embracing these multifaceted strategies and approaches, stakeholders can unite to confront the global food waste crisis, thereby fostering resilience, sustainability, and social equity within our food systems.

Microencapsulation of Betalains Extracted from Garambullo (Myrtillocactus geometrizans) to Produce Active Chitosan-Polyvinyl Alcohol Films with Delayed Release of Bioactive Compounds

Garambullo is a plant with little industrial application. However, garambullo contains betalains, photosensitive phytochemical compounds, which through microencapsulation can be used in chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) films for application in tomato coatings. These biopackages were characterized by physical tests, water vapor permeability, puncture tests, extension, color, differential scanning calorimetry (DCS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activity analyses. The influence of the biopackages on the tomato coatings was measured using parameters such as minimum weight loss close to 2% at day 9, pH of 4.6, Brix of 5.5, titratable acidity of 1 g acid/100 mL sample, and shelf life of up to 18 days. The biopackages containing betalain microcapsules had a water vapor permeability of 2 × 10-14 g/h·m·Pa and an elongation of 5 ± 0.5%, indicating that the package did not stretch. The deformation at the breaking point for the package without and with microcapsules was 0.569 and 1.620, respectively. With respect to color, adding white microcapsules and betalains can cause the material to darken, resulting in a yellowish color. Furthermore, the phenolic content was greater for the biopackages with betalains, while there was no significant difference in the antioxidant activity since the active compounds were not released. According to the in vitro results, the inhibition of B. cinerea was achieved on the eighth day when the active compounds were released from the microcapsules. The tomato with betalains lost 2% of its weight, and B. cinerea was inhibited, extending its shelf life to 18 days. The proposed biopackages have good properties as biopolymers and inhibit the presence of B. cinerea.

Tailoring hydroxypropyl starch films with curdlan for enhanced properties for edible packaging

Hydroxypropyl starch-based composite system has high potential for many applications such as food packaging and biomedical fields. Here, how the incorporation of curdlan, a thermo-irreversible heating-set gel, tailors the processability, structure, and film performance of hydroxypropyl starch, a cooling-set gel, has been systematically investigated, aiming to achieve enhanced material properties favorable for edible packaging applications. Curdlan incorporation increased the shear-thinning behavior and viscosity of hydroxypropyl starch solution, which was also strongly affected by temperature. The miscibility and comparability between the two polymers with distinct gelation behaviors is a practical and interesting scientific topic. Scanning electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis all indicated good compatibility between hydroxypropyl starch and curdlan. There was no observable phase boundary between the two materials, and all composite films showed only a single relaxation peak and only one polymer thermal decomposition peak. This resulted in improved structural density and overall performance. Compared with pure HPS film, the 7:3 HPS/CD film showed increases in tensile strength by 66.12 % and thermal decomposition temperature by 3 °C, and a reduction in water solubility by 11.72 %. This knowledge gained here may facilitate the development of edible films based on hydroxypropyl starch with satisfying film performance and processability.

ZnO nanoparticles encapsulated cellulose-lignin film for antibacterial and biodegradable food packaging

Foodborne illness caused by consuming foods contaminated by pathogens remains threating to the public health. Despite considerable efforts of using renewable source materials, it is highly demanding to fabricate food packaging with multiple properties including eco-friendliness, bactericidal effect and biocompatibility. Here, sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were used as functional filler and structure components, respectively, on the cellulose nanofibers (CNFs)-based films, which endows the produced membrane (CNF/SL-ZnO) the UV-light blocking, antioxidant, and antimicrobial characteristics. Due to the interconnected polymeric structure, the prepared CNF/SL-ZnO films possessed considerable mechanical properties, thermal stability, and good moisture barrier capability. Moreover, the tested samples exhibited an improved shelf life in food packaging. Furthermore, metagenome analysis revealed superior biodegradability of obtained films with negligible side effect on the soil microenvironment. Therefore, the biocompatible, degradable, and antibacterial CNF/SL-ZnO film holds enormous potential for sustainable uses including food packaging.

Application of Natural Functional Additives for Improving Bioactivity and Structure of Biopolymer-Based Films for Food Packaging: A Review

The global trend towards conscious consumption plays an important role in consumer preferences regarding both the composition and quality of food and packaging materials, including sustainable ones. The development of biodegradable active packaging materials could reduce both the negative impact on the environment due to a decrease in the use of oil-based plastics and the amount of synthetic preservatives. This review discusses relevant functional additives for improving the bioactivity of biopolymer-based films. Addition of plant, microbial, animal and organic nanoparticles into bio-based films is discussed. Changes in mechanical, transparency, water and oxygen barrier properties are reviewed. Since microbial and oxidative deterioration are the main causes of food spoilage, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of natural additives are discussed, including perspective ones for the development of biodegradable active packaging.

An overview of biochar production techniques and application in iron and steel industries

Integrating innovation and environmental responsibility has become important in pursuing sustainable industrial practices in the contemporary world. These twin imperatives have stimulated research into developing methods that optimize industrial processes, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness while mitigating undesirable ecological impacts. This objective is exemplified by the emergence of biochar derived from the thermo-chemical transformation of biomass. This review examines biochar production methods and their potential applications across various aspects of the iron and steel industries (ISI). The technical, economic, and sustainable implications of integrating biochar into the ISI were explored. Slow pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization are the most efficient methods for higher biochar yield (25-90%). Biochar has several advantages- higher heating value (30-32 MJ/kg), more porosity (58.22%), and significantly larger surface area (113 m2/g) compared to coal and coke. However, the presence of biochar often reduces fluidity in a coal-biochar mixture. The findings highlighted that biochar production and implementation in ISI often come with higher costs, primarily due to the higher expense of substitute fuels compared to traditional fossil fuels. The economic viability and societal desirability of biochar are highly uncertain and vary significantly based on factors such as location, feedstock type, production scale, and biochar pricing, among others. Furthermore, biomass and biochar supply chain is another important factor which determines its large scale implementation. Despite these challenges, there are opportunities to reduce emissions from BF-BOF operations by utilizing biochar technologies. Overall, the present study explored integrating diverse biochar production methods into the ISI aiming to contribute to the ongoing research on sustainable manufacturing practices, underscoring their significance in shaping a more environmentally conscious future.

Rapid in situ formation of κ-carrageenan-carboxymethyl chitosan-kaolin clay hydrogel films enriched with arbutin for enhanced preservation of cherry tomatoes

Food waste resulting from perishable fruits and vegetables, coupled with the utilization of non-renewable petroleum-based packaging materials, presents pressing challenges demanding resolution. This study addresses these critical issues through the innovative development of a biodegradable functional plastic wrap. Specifically, the proposed solution involves the creation of a κ-carrageenan/carboxymethyl chitosan/arbutin/kaolin clay composite film. This film, capable of rapid in-situ formation on the surfaces of perishable fruits, adeptly conforms to their distinct shapes. The incorporation of kaolin clay in the composite film plays a pivotal role in mitigating water vapor and oxygen permeability, concurrently bolstering water resistance. Accordingly, tensile strength of the composite film experiences a remarkable enhancement, escalating from 20.60 MPa to 34.71 MPa with the incorporation of kaolin clay. The composite film proves its efficacy by preserving cherry tomatoes for an extended period of 9 days at 28 °C through the deliberate delay of fruit ripening, respiration, dehydration and microbial invasion. Crucially, the economic viability of the raw materials utilized in the film, coupled with the expeditious and straightforward preparation method, underscores the practicality of this innovative approach. This study thus introduces an easy and sustainable method for preserving perishable fruits, offering a cost-effective and efficient alternative to petroleum-based packaging materials.

Development of Versatile, thermally stable, flexible, UV-resistant and antibacterial polyvinyl alcohol-Nanodiamonds composite for efficient food packaging

This research paper reports an enhancement of thermal, optical, mechanical and antibacterial activities of the Polyvinyl alcohol-Nanodiamonds (PVA-NDs) composite required for the food packaging industry. The synthesis of composites was done by the wet processing method. The large surface area of NDs facilitated the robust interaction between the hydroxyl group and macromolecular chains of PVA to enhance the hydrogen bonding of PVA with NDs rather than PVA molecules. Thus, a reduction in PVA diffraction peak intensity was reported. NDs improved the thermal stability by preventing the out-diffusion of volatile decomposition products of PVA. The results also revealed an enhancement in tensile strength (∼60 MPa) and ductility (∼180 %). PVA-NDs composite efficiently blocked the UVC (100 %), most of the part of the UVB (∼85 % above 300 nm), and UVA (∼58 %). Furthermore, enhanced antibacterial activities were reported for PVA-NDs composite against E. coli and S. aureus. NDs accumulated around the bacterial cells prevented essential cellular functions and led to death. Hence, this composite could be a promising candidate for safe, thermally stable, strong, flexible, transparent, UV- resistant antibacterial food packaging material.

Antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation pH-responsive films based on gelatin/chitosan incorporated with aloe-emodin

Using novel active food packaging has gradually become a daily necessity in terms of impeding microbial contamination. Here, an antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (PDI) pH-responsive film is developed by incorporating aloe-emodin (AE) into a vehicle of gelatin/chitosan (GC). Besides enhancement in hydrophobicity, the well-dispersed crystals of AE in the GC matrix by hydrogen bonding can upgrade the film's mechanical strength and barrier. The matrix is capable of regulating the release of AE in response to acidic stimuli by a combination mechanism of diffusion and polymer relaxation. Being benefitted from the inherent bioactivity of AE and the PDI activity under visible light irradiation (i.e., 456 nm), the target film of GC-AE2 has excellent antibacterial effect towards Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, showing bacterial viability of 9.93 ± 1.33 % and 14.85 ± 1.16 %, respectively. Furthermore, the film can effectively thwart Botrytis cinerea infection in cherry tomatoes, demonstrating its potential in preventing the microbial spoilage of postharvest fruits.

Properties of Biocomposites Made of Extruded Apple Pomace and Potato Starch: Mechanical and Physicochemical Properties

This paper presents research results on biocomposites made from a combination of extruded apple pomace (EAP) and potato starch (SP). The aim of this work was to investigate the basic properties of biocomposites obtained from extruded apple pomace reinforced with potato starch. The products were manufactured by hot pressing using a hydraulic press with a mould for producing samples. The prepared biocomposites were subjected to strength tests, surface wettability was determined, and a colour analysis was carried out. A thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and cross-sectioning observed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were also performed. The obtained test results showed that the combination of apple pomace (EAP) and starch (SP) enabled the production of compact biocomposite materials. At the same time, it was found that each increase in the share of starch in the mixture for producing biocomposites increased the strength parameters of the obtained materials. With the highest share of starch in the mixture, 40%, and a raw material moisture content of 14%, the material had the best strength parameters and was even characterised by hydrophobic properties. It was also found that materials with a high content of starch are characterised by increased temperature resistance. The analysis of SEM microscopic photos showed well-glued particles of apple pomace, pectin, and gelatinised starch and a smooth external structure of the samples. Research and analyses have shown that apple pomace reinforced only with the addition of starch can be a promising raw material for the production of simple, biodegradable biocomposite materials.

Eco-friendly cellulose-based antioxidation film by partial esterification

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have received increasing attention because of their superior dispersion and thermal stability. In this study, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanocrystal (TOCNC) multifunctional antioxidationantioxidation films (TOCNC-GA film) were prepared by the esterification of TOCNC and gallic acid (GA). TOCNC-GAX films, where X represents the ratio of the amount of GA to the amount of TOCNC, were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The films with the GA:TOCNC ratio of 1:1 achieved higher interfacial compatibility than the other films. The mechanical properties and water resistance of the TOCNC-GA films were superior than those of pure TOCNC films. Moreover, the original TOCNC structure changed owing to the presence of GA, which endowed a certain thermoplasticity owing to the formation of ester groups. The antioxidation properties of the TOCNC-GA1 films reached 43.8 % and 71.85 % after 6 and 24 h, respectively, as evaluated by the 2,2-biphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method and the free radical scavenging activities of the TOCNC-GA1 films. The innovative development of the functional antioxidation film presented in this paper has great potential for use in antioxidation packaging materials and food preservation.

However, concerns about their potential overuse and bioaccumulation raise unanswered questions about their health effects. Molecule-to-molecule interactions and physicochemical dynamics create pathways through which nanoparticles cause toxicity. The combination of nanotechnology and environmental sustainability principles leads to the examination of green nanoparticle synthesis. The discourse extends to how nanomaterials penetrate biological systems, their applications, toxicological effects, and dissemination routes. Additionally, this examination delves into the ecological consequences of nanomaterial contamination in natural ecosystems. Employing robust risk assessment methodologies, including the risk allocation framework, is recommended to address potential dangers associated with nanotechnology integration. Establishing standardized, universally accepted guidelines for evaluating nanomaterial toxicity and protocols for nano-waste disposal is urged to ensure responsible stewardship of this transformative technology. In conclusion, the article summarizes global trends, persistent challenges, and emerging regulatory strategies shaping nanotechnology in agriculture and food science. Sustained, in-depth research is crucial to fully benefit from nanotechnology prospects for sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Eco-Friendly Poly (Butylene Adipate-co-Terephthalate) Coated Bi-Layered Films: An Approach to Enhance Mechanical and Barrier Properties

In this research work, a coated paper was prepared with poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) film to explore its use in eco-friendly food packaging. The paper was coated with PBAT film for packaging using hot pressing, a production method currently employed in the packaging industry. The coated papers were evaluated for their structural, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties. The structural morphology and chemical analysis of the coated paper confirmed the consistent formation of PBAT bi-layered on paper surfaces. Surface coating with PBAT film increased the water resistance of the paper samples, as demonstrated by tests of barrier characteristics, including the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), oxygen transmission rate (OTR), and water contact angle (WCA) of water drops. The transmission rate of the clean paper was 2010.40 cc m-2 per 24 h for OTR and 110.24 g m-2 per 24 h for WVTR. If the PBAT-film was coated, the value decreased to 91.79 g m-2 per 24 h and 992.86 cc m-2 per 24 h. The hydrophobic nature of PBAT, confirmed by WCA measurements, contributed to the enhanced water resistance of PBAT-coated paper. This result presents an improved PBAT-coated paper material, eliminating the need for adhesives and allowing for the fabrication of bi-layered packaging.

Recent advances in protein-polysaccharide based biocomposites and their potential applications in food packaging: A review

This review addresses the current trend of replacing petroleum-based polymers in food packaging with bio-based alternatives, specifically focusing on proteins and polysaccharides. While these biopolymers exhibit excellent film-forming properties and are abundant in nature, their individual use in packaging lacks ideal plastic-like characteristics, especially in terms of mechanical and barrier properties. A recent solution involves the formulation of biocomposites through the reinforcement of one biopolymer with another (e.g., protein with a polysaccharide), significantly enhancing the physical, mechanical, and barrier properties of packaging materials. The review concentrates on the integration of proteins and polysaccharides in biocomposite materials, emphasizing their potential applications in active and intelligent food packaging systems. It covers sources, manufacturing methods, interaction mechanisms, recent developments, perspectives, and opportunities. The exploration extends to practical implementations of these biocomposites in enhancing food quality, safety, and shelf life-a green technological approach contributing to the reduction of food waste and loss.

Valorization of a by-product of the yerba mate industry by assembling with cassava starch adhesive for packaging material production

Yerba mate industrial processing produces tons of powder as a by-product, this yerba mate powder (YMP) is an excellent source of biomass to develop biodegradable materials. Cassava starch modified with 1,2,3,4-butane tetracarboxylic acid (BA) in the presence of sodium propionate as a catalyst is an eco-friendly option to obtain bioadhesives. This work aimed to develop sustainable laminates from starch-based adhesives and yerba mate powder and to study their physico-chemical, structural, and mechanical properties. Blends of bioadhesive and YMP were prepared (1:1, adhesive:YMP). Monolayer materials were obtained by thermo-compression and later assembled with adhesive to obtain bilayer laminates. Bioadhesive was able to bind the yerba mate by-product fibers, as evidenced by SEM microstructure analysis, the interactions of adhesive:substrate were elucidated by ATR-FTIR and supported by chemometrics analysis. The incorporation of the catalyst decreased the rugosity of materials and their mechanical performance was improved by the action of both acid concentration and catalyst presence, requiring higher energy for puncture. Thus, it was feasible to obtain mono and bilayer laminates as an eco-compatible alternative for the design of sustainable tray-like materials based on the industrial by-product of yerba mate.

Antimicrobial polysaccharide hydrogels embedded with methyl-β-cyclodextrin/thyme oil inclusion complexes for exceptional mechanical performance and chilled chicken breast preservation

While hydrogels have potential for food packaging, limited research on hydrogels with excellent mechanical performance and antibacterial activity for preserving chicken breasts. Herein, we created antibacterial hydrogels by embedding methyl-β-cyclodextrin/thyme oil inclusion complexes (MCD/TO-ICs) into a polyvinyl alcohol matrix containing dendrobium polysaccharides and guar gum in varying ratios using freeze-thaw cycling method. The resulting hydrogels exhibited a more compact structure than those without MCD/TO-ICs, enhancing thermal stability and increasing glass transition temperature due to additional intermolecular interactions between polymer chains that inhibited chain movement. XRD analysis showed no significant changes in crystalline phase, enabling formation of a 3D network through abundant hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrated exceptional durability, with a toughness of 350 ± 25 kJ/m3 and adequate tearing resistance of 340 ± 30 J/m2, capable of lifting 3 kg weight, 1200 times greater than the hydrogel itself. Additionally, the hydrogels displayed excellent antimicrobial activity and antioxidant properties. Importantly, the hydrogels effectively maintained TVB-N levels and microbial counts within acceptable ranges, preserving sensory properties and extending the shelf life of chilled chicken breasts by four days. This study highlights the potential of MCD/TO-IC-incorporated polysaccharide hydrogels as safe and effective active packaging solutions for preserving chilled chicken in food industry.

High performance poly(L-lactic acid)-based film by one-step synthesis of poly (L-lactic acid-co-butylene itaconate-co-glycolic acid) for efficient preservation of yogurt storage

Biodegradable poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) has seldom used for dairy packaging due to medium permeability and brittleness. Novel PLLA copolymers, poly (L-lactic acid-co-butylene itaconate-co-glycolic acid) (PLBIGA), were developed by integrating glycolic acid (GA) and poly(butylene itaconate) (PBI) into PLLA's structure using low molecular weight PLLA as a key initiator. Then, packaging materials with better barrier and mechanical properties were obtained by blended PLBIGA with PLLA. Both PLLA/PLBIGA films and polyethylene nylon composite film (PE/NY) were used for stirred yogurt packaging and storage at 4 °C for 25 days. Results revealed that yogurt packed by PLLA/PLBIGA films maintained stabler water-holding capacity, color, and viscosity over the storage period. Moreover, the integrity of the gel structure and the total viable count of lactic acid bacteria in yogurt packaged in PLLA/40-PLBIGA8 were also found to be superior to those in PE/NY packages, highlighting its eco-friendly advantages in dairy packaging.

Thermally-Activated Shape Memory Behavior of Biodegradable Blends Based on Plasticized PLA and Thermoplastic Starch

Biodegradable blends based on plasticized poly(lactic acid) PLA and thermoplastic starch (TPS) have been obtained. The influence of the PLA plasticizer as a compatibility agent has been studied by using two different plasticizers such as neat oligomeric lactic acid (OLA) and functionalized with maleic acid (mOLA). In particular, the morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties have been studied as well as the shape memory ability of the melt-processed materials. Therefore, the influence of the interaction between different plasticizers and the PLA matrix as well as the compatibility between the two polymeric phases on the thermally-activated shape memory properties have been studied. It is very interesting to use the same additive able to act as both plasticizer and compatibilizer, decreasing the glass transition temperature of PLA to a temperature close to the physiological one, obtaining a material suitable for potential biomedical applications. In particular, we obtain that OLA-plasticized blend (oPLA/TPS) show very good thermally-activated capability at 45 °C and 50% deformation, while the blend obtained by using maleic OLA (moPLA/TPS) did not show shape memory behavior at 45 °C and 50% deformation. This fact is due to their morphological changes and the loss of two well-distinguished phases, one acting as fixed phase and the other one acting as switching phase to typically obtain shape memory response. Therefore, the thermally-activated shape memory results show that it is very important to make a balance between plasticizer and compatibilizer, considering the need of two well-established phases to obtain shape memory response.

A data mining approach to analyze the role of biomacromolecules-based nanocomposites in sustainable packaging

Recent decades have witnessed a surge in research interest in bio-nanocomposite-based packaging materials, but still, a lack of systematic analysis exists in this domain. Bio-based packaging materials pose a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based packaging materials. The current work employs bibliometric analysis to deliver a comprehensive outline on the role of bio nanocomposites in packaging. India, Iran, and China were revealed to be the top three nations actively engaged in this domain in total publications. Islamic Azad University in Iran and Universiti Putra Malaysia in Malaysia are among the world's best institutions in active research and publications in this field. The extensive collaboration between nations and institutions highlights the significance of a holistic approach towards bio-nanocomposite. The National Natural Science Foundation of China is the leading funding body in this field of research. Among authors, Jong whan Rhim secured the topmost citations (2234) in this domain (13 publications). Among journals, Carbohydrate Polymers secured the maximum citation count (4629) from 36 articles; the initial one was published in 2011. Bio nanocomposite is the most frequently used keyword. Researchers and policymakers focussing on sustainable packaging solutions will gain crucial insights on the current research status on packaging solutions using bio-nanocomposites from the conclusions.

Development of starch-based films reinforced with curcumin-loaded nanocomplexes: Characterization and application in the preservation of blueberries

In current study, curcumin-loaded bioactive nanocomplexes (Cur NCs) (2 %, 5 %, 8 %, and 11 %) were used to prepare corn starch (CS)-based composite films (CS-Cur NCs). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy revealed that Cur NCs were uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix via physical interaction. Moreover, the mechanical, gas barrier, hydrophobicity, optical, and thermal properties and the antioxidant activity of composite films were potentially improved with the addition of Cur NCs. Subsequently, CS-based film with 11 % Cur NCs exhibited high antioxidant activity (the scavenging rates of DPPH and ABTS are 50.07 % ± 0.82 % and 65.26 % ± 1.60 %, respectively) and was used for packaging blueberries. Compared with the control, the CS-Cur NCs packaging treatment effectively improved the appearance and nutrition of blueberries, and maintained the high activity of several antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, CS-Cur NCs packaging treatment significantly improved the ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) levels, thus regulating the AsA-GSH cycle system and suppressing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In summary, the CS-Cur NCs packaging could effectively conserve the postharvest quality of blueberries by improving antioxidant enzyme activity and suppressing excessive accumulation of ROS, which contributes to the development of bioactive packaging and provides novel insights into the preservation of blueberries. This work demonstrates that the development of active packaging is promising to absorb the oxidative radicals from food, and protect the food from inherent and external factors, thus enhancing the quality, security, and shelf-life of the food during storage.

Preparation of strong, UV-blocking and sustainable glucose-cross-linked cellulose plastics via hydroxyl-yne click reaction

The construction of functional cellulose plastics possessing strong UV-blocking, hydrophilicity, and biodegradability is challenging. Therefore, we provide a novel strategy to successfully prepare sustainable and hydrophilic glucose-cross-linked cellulose (GC) plastics showing effective UV-blocking and excellent mechanical properties via hydroxyl-yne click reaction at room temperature. The results demonstrated that hydroxyl-yne click chemistry enabled efficient crosslinking of cellulose with glucose using 4-dimethylamino pyridine (DMAP) as a catalyst. Moreover, the DMAP residue imparted good UV-shielding properties to GC films exhibiting nearly 100 % UVC (200-275 nm) and 100 % UVB (320-275 nm) shielding ratios. The introduction of glucose imparted superior hydrophilicity (water contact angle of 40.3-43.2°) and improved water adsorption. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the GC films increased with the increasing crosslinking density, and the highest tensile stress was 94 MPa. The water-induced breaking and hydrogen bond reforming strategy led to a stress of 127 MPa and a strain of 25.6 % for the final GC2 film, which were excellent compared to those of the most reported cellulose films. Additionally, GC films were biosafe, exhibited improved oxygen barrier, and good biodegradability. Hence, this study provides a promising and efficient approach for preparing high-performance cellulose plastics.

Validating a Xylose Regulator to Increase Polyhydroxybutyrate Production for Utilizing Mixed Sugars from Lignocellulosic Biomass Using Escherichia coli

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production from lignocellulosic biomass is economically beneficial. Because lignocellulosic biomass is a mixture rich in glucose and xylose, Escherichia coli, which prefers glucose, needs to overcome glucose repression for efficient biosugar use. To avoid glucose repression, here, we overexpressed a xylose regulator (xylR) in an E. coli strain expressing bktB, phaB, and phaC from Cupriavidus necator and evaluated the effect of xylR on PHB production. XylR overexpression increased xylose consumption from 0% to 46.53% and produced 4.45-fold more PHB than the control strain without xylR in a 1% sugar mixture of glucose and xylose (1:1). When the xylR-overexpressed strain was applied to sugars from lignocellulosic biomass, cell growth and PHB production of the strain showed a 4.7-fold increase from the control strain, yielding 2.58 ± 0.02 g/l PHB and 4.43 ± 0.28 g/l dry cell weight in a 1% hydrolysate mixture. XylR overexpression increased the expression of xylose operon genes by up to 1.7-fold. Moreover, the effect of xylR was substantially different in various E. coli strains. Overall, the results showed the effect of xylR overexpression on PHB production in a non-native PHB producer and the possible application of xylR for xylose utilization in E. coli.

Water and Oxygen Barrier Properties of All-Cellulose Nanocomposites

Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) is potentially interesting as a biobased, rigid food packaging material, but its stiffness and strength are somewhat low, and its water and oxygen transport rates are too high. To improve these characteristics, we investigated nanocomposites of HPC and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). These high-aspect-ratio nanoparticles display high stiffness and strength, and their high crystallinity renders them virtually impermeable. Exchanging the counterions of sulfate-ester decorated CNCs with cetyltrimethylammonium ions affords particles that are dispersible in ethanol (CTA.CNC) and allows solvent casting of HPC/CTA.CNC nanocomposite films, which, even at a CTA.CNC content of 90 wt %, are highly transparent. The introduction of CTA.CNC considerably increases the Young's modulus (Ey) and upper tensile strength (σUTS). For example, in the nanocomposite with 90% CTA.CNC, Ey = 7.6 GPa is increased 20-fold and σUTS = 42.7 MPa is more than doubled in comparison to HPC, whereas the extensibility (1.1%) remains appreciable. Composites with a CTA.CNC content of 70 wt % or less show a lower water vapor permeability (6.4-9.2 × 10-5 g μm m-2 s-1 Pa-1) than the neat HPC (1.5 × 10-4 g μm m-2 s-1 Pa-1), whereas the oxygen permeability (5.6 × 10-7-1.3 × 10-6 cm3 μm m-2 s-1 Pa-1) is reduced by 1 order of magnitude compared to HPC (3.2 × 10-6 cm3 μm m-2 s-1 Pa-1). The biobased nanocomposites retain their mechanical integrity at a relative humidity of 75% but readily disintegrate in water.

Natural polysaccharides and proteins-based films for potential food packaging and mulch applications: A review

Conventional nondegradable packaging and mulch films, after reaching the end of their use, become a major source of waste and are primarily disposed of in landfills. Accumulation of non-degradable film residues in the soil leads to diminished soil fertility, reduced crop yield, and can potentially affect humans. Application of degradable films is still limited due to the high cost, poor mechanical, and gas barrier properties of current biobased synthetic polymers. In this respect, natural polysaccharides and proteins can offer potential solutions. Having versatile functional groups, three-dimensional network structures, biodegradability, ease of processing, and the potential for surface modifications make polysaccharides and proteins excellent candidates for quality films. Besides, their low-cost availability as industrial waste/byproducts makes them cost-effective alternatives. This review paper covers the performance properties, cost assessment, and in-depth analysis of macromolecular structures of some natural polysaccharides and proteins-based films that have great potential for packaging and mulch applications. Proper dissolution of biopolymers to improve molecular interactions and entanglement, and establishment of crosslinkages to form an ordered and cohesive polymeric structure can help to obtain films with good properties. Simple aqueous-based film formulation techniques and utilization of waste/byproducts can stimulate the adoption of affordable biobased films on a large-scale.

Transparent biodegradable composite plastic packaging film from TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers

In this research, we develop a method to create biodegradable food packaging films. Initially, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) undergoes sonication to produce well-dispersed single-strain nanofibers. These nanofibers are then blended with waterborne polyurethane (WPU) to enhance their extensibility. To further enhance compatibility between these two components, a non-ionic surfactant, Tween 80, is introduced into the TOCNF/WPU mixture to improve the dispersion of the WPU within the blend. The addition of Tween 80 significantly increases the transparency of the resulting film (Transmittance: 89.4 %, Haze: 2.2 %). Furthermore, the incorporation of the surfactant effectively reduces the formation of wrinkles and cracks during the film drying process, preventing adverse impacts on the film's barrier properties. The thin film further undergoes esterification crosslinking with citric acid to remove its hydrophilic groups for better water vapor barrier properties. The resulting bio-based packaging film exhibits remarkable transparency, strong biodegradability, and superior gas-barrier properties (water vapor and oxygen) compared to commonly used food packaging.

Low-Density Polyethylene-Based Novel Active Packaging Film for Food Shelf-Life Extension via Thyme-Oil Control Release from SBA-15 Nanocarrier

The use of natural raw substances for food preservation could provide a great contribution to food waste reduction, circular economy enhancement, and green process application widening. Recent studies indicated that the use of porous materials as adsorbents for natural essential oils provided nanohybrids with excellent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Following this trend in this work, a thymol oil (TEO) rich SBA-15 nanohybrid was prepared and characterized physiochemically with various techniques. This TEO@SBA-15 nanohybrid, along with the pure SBA-15, was extruded with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to develop novel active packaging films. Results indicated that TEO loading was higher than other porous materials reported recently, and the addition of both pure SBA-15 and TEO@SBA-15 to the LDPE increased the water/oxygen barrier. The film with the higher thyme-oil@SBA-15 nanohybrid content exhibited a slower release kinetic. The antioxidant activity of the final films ignited after 48 h, was in the range of 60-70%, and was almost constant for 7 days. Finally, all tests indicated a sufficient improvement by the addition of thyme-oil@SBA-15 nanohybrids in the pure LDPE matrix and the concentration of wt. 10% of such nanocarriers provided the optimum final LDPE/10TEO@SBE-15 active packaging film. This material could be a potential future product for active packaging applications.

Preparation and characterization of starch/PBAT film containing hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin/ethyl lauroyl arginate/cinnamon essential oil microcapsules and its application in the preservation of strawberry

Cinnamon essential oil (CEO) was emulsified by hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin/ ethyl lauroyl arginate (HPCD/LAE) complex to make nanoemulsions, which were then incorporated into maltodextrin (MD) to prepare HPCD/LAE/CEO/MD microcapsules by spray drying. The starch/polybutylene adipate terephthalate (starch/PBAT, SP) based extrusion-blowing films containing above microcapsules were developed and used as packaging materials for strawberry preservation. The morphology, encapsulation efficiency, thermal and antibacterial properties of microcapsules with different formulations were investigated. The effects of microcapsules on the physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of SP films were evaluated. When the formula was 4 % HPCD/LAE-3% CEO-10% MD (HL-3C-MD), the microcapsule had the smallest particle size (3.3 μm), the highest encapsulation efficiency (84.51 %) of CEO and the best antibacterial effect. The mechanical and antimicrobial properties of the SP film were enhanced while the water vapor transmittance and oxygen permeability decreased with the incorporation of HL-3C-MD microcapsules. The films effectively reduced the weight loss rate (49.03 %), decay rate (40.59 %) and the total number of colonies (2.474 log CFU/g) and molds (2.936 log CFU/g), thus extending the shelf life of strawberries. This study revealed that the developed SP films containing HPCD/LAE/CEO microcapsules had potential applications in degradable bioactive food packaging materials.

Alternative Additives for Organic and Natural Ready-to-Eat Meats to Control Spoilage and Maintain Shelf Life: Current Perspectives in the United States

Food additives are employed in the food industry to enhance the color, smell, and taste of foods, increase nutritional value, boost processing efficiency, and extend shelf life. Consumers are beginning to prioritize food ingredients that they perceive as supporting a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing ingredients they deem acceptable as alternative or "clean-label" ingredients. Ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products can be contaminated with pathogens and spoilage microorganisms after the cooking step, contributing to food spoilage losses and increasing the risk to consumers for foodborne illnesses. More recently, consumers have advocated for no artificial additives or preservatives, which has led to a search for antimicrobials that meet these demands but do not lessen the safety or quality of RTE meats. Lactates and diacetates are used almost universally to extend the shelf life of RTE meats by reducing spoilage organisms and preventing the outgrowth of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. These antimicrobials applied to RTE meats tend to be broad-spectrum in their activities, thus affecting overall microbial ecology. It is to the food processing industry's advantage to target spoilage organisms and pathogens specifically.

Polysaccharides and proteins-based bionanocomposites for microencapsulation of probiotics to improve stability and viability in the gastrointestinal tract: A review

Probiotics have recently received significant attention due to their various benefits, such as the modulation of gut flora, reduction of blood sugar and insulin resistance, prevention and treatment of digestive disorders, and strengthening of the immune system. One of the major issues concerning probiotics is the maintenance of their viability in the presence of digestive conditions and extended shelf life during storage. To address this concern, numerous techniques have been explored to achieve success. Among these methods, the microencapsulation of probiotics has been proposed as the most effective way to overcome this challenge. The combination of nanomaterials with biopolymer coating is considered a novel approach to improve its viability and effective delivery. The use of polysaccharides and proteins-based bionanocomposites for microencapsulation of probiotics has emerged as an efficient and promising approach for maintaining cell viability and targeted delivery. This review article aims to investigate the use of different bionanocomposites in microencapsulation of probiotics and their effect on cell survival in long-term storage and harsh conditions in the gastrointestinal tract.

Introducing graphene quantum dots in decomposable wheat starch-gelatin based nano-biofilms

This research aims to discover a viable substitute for the common harmful plastic packaging utilized in food products. Citric acid was employed as an accessible and risk-free precursor in synthesizing graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Using the efficient carbonization technique, GQDs were obtained and subsequently transferred to nano-biofilms in varying percentages relative to natural polymers. FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, and AFM analyses were conducted to examine the formation of the nano-biofilms. GQDs demonstrated optimal performance in the disk diffusion method and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical approach. Adding GQDs to starch and gelatin composite improved the physical properties of nano-biofilms such as moisture contact, swelling index, and solubility. The transparency of the films was reduced by GQDs, which reduces the transmission of visible light and plays an important role in food protection. The packaging films' weight loss due to decomposition was examined after being buried in soil for 50 days, which relieved the eco-concerns of these packaging films. To evaluate the performance of the films in inhibiting food spoilage, cherries, and cucumbers were packed with a control film and the fabricated film containing 14 wt% of GQD. After 14 days, the modified nano-biofilm was able to maintain the freshness of the samples.

Starch films loaded with tannin: the study of rheological and physical properties

Recently, the research on innovative food packaging has been oriented toward biodegradable materials to lower the environmental impact generated by conventional plastics. The films often carry functional additives interacting with the matrix and modifying its physical properties. In this work tannin, a scarcely exploited active additive, was used to obtain potato starch-based films, and its content was optimized on the basis of mechanical and microscopic tests. Rheological measurements were adopted to evaluate the tannin-starch interaction and the microstructure of the film forming solutions (FFSs). Their thickness, color, thermal conductivity, elastic modulus (Eel), elongation at break (EAB), surface wettability and water solubility were evaluated. Furthermore, microstructure was investigated through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), polarized light (POM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that all FFSs behave as weak gels and tannin addition weakens the gel structure and decreases the gelatinization temperature from about 60 °C to 57 °C. Plastic and deformable films (Eel = 1.96 MPa and EAB = 189 %) were obtained at low tannin fractions, whereas, at a higher concentration, stiffer films (Eel = 12 MPa and EAB = 10 %), with hydrophobic behavior were produced. Among the tested tannin fractions, an intermediate value of 1.7 % (w/w) was found to be promising for industrial purposes.

Chitosan-based edible film incorporated with wampee (Clausena lansium) seed essential oil: Preparation, characterization and biological activities

Chitosan (Ch)-based edible composite films were prepared by incorporating blending wampee seed essential oil (WSEO) into a Ch matrix, using the incorporation ratio as a variable. The physical, mechanical properties, structure morphology and rheological properties were determined using tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EB), water vapor permeability (WVP) tests together with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations and apparent viscosity and shear rate. In addition, the antimicrobial, antioxidant activities were investigated by the DPPH & ABTS radicals scavenging and inhibition zone assays, respectively. Compared with Ch, the incorporation of WSEO significantly decreased (P < 0.05) the TS, EB, and WVP values, especially when the WSEO ratio reached 1.0 % or higher. Meanwhile, the films exhibited greatly improved visible light barrier performance after WSEO incorporation. Both FTIR spectroscopy and SEM observations reflected the crosslinking between WSEO and Ch. Meanwhile, the composite films demonstrated smaller particle size and weaker rheological viscosities, which enhanced the antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities when compared with those of Ch. Therefore, this study suggested that WSEO incorporated with Ch is an effective ingredient for the preparation of edible films with enhanced physicochemical and biological properties.

Recent advances in biomacromolecule-based nanocomposite films for intelligent food packaging- A review

In food packaging, biopolymer films are biodegradable films made from biomacromolecule-based natural materials, while biocomposite films are hybrids of two or more materials, with at least one being biodegradable. Bionanocomposites are different than the earlier ones, as they consist of various nanofillers (both natural and inorganic) in combination with biomacromolecule-based biodegradable materials to make good compostable bionanocomposites. In this regard, a new type of material known as bionanocomposite has been recently introduced to improve the properties and performance of biocomposite films. Bionanocomposites are primarily developed for active packaging, but their use in intelligent packaging is also noteworthy. For example, bionanocomposites developed using a hybrid of anthocyanin and carbon dots as intelligent materials have shown their high pH-sensing properties. The natural nanofillers (like nanocellulose, nanochitosan, nanoliposome, cellulose nanocrystals, cellulose nanofibers, etc.) are being employed to promote the sustainability, degradability and safety of bionanocomposites. Overall, this article comprehensively reviews the latest innovations in bionanocomposite films for intelligent food packaging over the past five years. In addition to packaging aspects, the role of nanofillers, the importance of life cycle assessment (LCA) and risk assessment, associated challenges, and future perspectives of bionanocomposite intelligent films are also discussed.

Chitosan-based films blended with moringa leaves and MgO nanoparticles for application in active food packaging

This study aims to address the issue of environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable petroleum-based food packaging by exploring the application of biodegradable films. Film casting was employed to fabricate food packaging films from chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymers blended with moringa extract (MoE) and various concentrations of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs). The films were characterized through multiple techniques, including UV spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The study investigated the physicomechanical properties, water solubility, water vapor transmission rate, oxygen permeability, migration test, biodegradability, contact angle, anti-fogging, antibacterial and antifungal activity, and application of the films for food packaging. The results showed that blending CS/PVA films with MoE and MgO NPs significantly improved their mechanical properties. The highest tensile strength of 98 MPa was observed in the CPMMgO-0.5 film. The solubility of the films was low, with CPMMgO-0 and CPMMgO-0.25 demonstrating the lowest solubility as weight decreased by 3.41 % and 3.47 %, respectively. The water vapor transmission rate and oxygen permeability decreased with increasing MgO NP concentrations, with the CPMMgO-0.5 film exhibiting the lowest values. The films also demonstrated good biodegradability, anti-fogging ability, antibacterial and antifungal activity, and low water solubility, enabling bead encapsulation over 14 days in good condition. Moreover, the thermal stability of the films was improved, extending the shelf life of bread. Therefore, the fabricated films provide a promising alternative to non-degradable plastic packaging, which heavily contributes to environmental pollution.

Hybrid Materials of Bio-Based Aerogels for Sustainable Packaging Solutions

This review explores the field of hybrid materials in the context of bio-based aerogels for the development of sustainable packaging solutions. Increasing global concern over environmental degradation and the growing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional packaging materials have led to a growing interest in the synthesis and application of bio-based aerogels. These aerogels, which are derived from renewable resources such as biopolymers and biomass, have unique properties such as a lightweight structure, excellent thermal insulation, and biodegradability. The manuscript addresses the innovative integration of bio-based aerogels with various other materials such as nanoparticles, polymers, and additives to improve their mechanical, barrier, and functional properties for packaging applications. It critically analyzes recent advances in hybridization strategies and highlights their impact on the overall performance and sustainability of packaging materials. In addition, the article identifies the key challenges and future prospects associated with the development and commercialization of hybrid bio-based aerogel packaging materials. The synthesis of this knowledge is intended to contribute to ongoing efforts to create environmentally friendly alternatives that address the current problems associated with conventional packaging while promoting a deeper understanding of the potential of hybrid materials for sustainable packaging solutions.

Effect of pH on the Mechanical Properties of Single-Biopolymer Mucilage (Opuntia ficus-indica), Pectin and Alginate Films: Development and Mechanical Characterisation

Pectin and alginate are well-established biopolymers used in natural film development. Single-polymer mucilage films were developed from freeze-dried native mucilage powder of two cultivars, 'Algerian' and 'Morado', and the films' mechanical properties were compared to single-polymer pectin and alginate films developed from commercially available pectin and alginate powders. The casting method prepared films forming solutions at 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% (w/w) for each polymer. Considerable variations were observed in the films' strength and elasticity between the various films at different polymer concentrations. Although mucilage films could be produced at 5% (w/w), both cultivars could not produce films with a tensile strength (TS) greater than 1 MPa. Mucilage films, however, displayed > 20% elongation at break (%E) values, being noticeably more elastic than the pectin and alginate films. The mechanical properties of the various films were further modified by varying the pH of the film-forming solution. The various films showed increased TS and puncture force (PF) values, although these increases were more noticeable for pectin and alginate than mucilage films. Although single-polymer mucilage films exhibit the potential to be used in developing natural packaging, pectin and alginate films possess more suitable mechanical attributes.

Recent advances in the production of bionanomaterials for development of sustainable food packaging: A comprehensive review

Polymers originating from natural macromolecule based polymeric materials have gained popularity due to the demand for green resources to develop unique, eco-friendly, and high-quality biopolymers. The objective of this review is to address the utilization of bionanomaterials to improve food quality, safety, security, and shelf life. Bionanomaterials are synthesized by integrating biological molecules with synthetic materials at the nanoscale. Nanostructured materials derived from biopolymers such as cellulose, chitin, or collagen can be employed for the development of sustainable food packaging. Green materials are cost-effective, biocompatible, biodegradable, and renewable. The interaction of nanoparticles with biological macromolecules must be analyzed to determine the properties of the packaging film. The nanoparticles control the growth of bacteria that cause food spoiling by releasing distinctive chemicals. Bio-nanocomposites and nanoencapsulation systems have been used in antimicrobial bio-based packaging solutions to improve the efficiency of synergism. Nanomaterials can regulate gas and moisture permeability, screen UV radiation, and limit microbial contamination, keeping the freshness and flavor of the food. Food packaging based on nanoparticles embedded biopolymers can alleviate environmental concerns by lowering the amount of packaging materials required and enhancing packaging recyclability. This results in less waste and a more eco-sustainable approach to food packaging. The study on current advances in the production of bionanomaterials for development of sustainable food packaging involves a detailed investigation of the available data from existing literature, as well as the compilation and analysis of relevant research results using statistical approaches.

Packaging films based on biopolymers from seafood processing wastes: Preparation, properties, and their applications for shelf-life extension of seafoods-A comprehensive review

Biopolymers derived from seafood processing byproducts are used to prepare active and biodegradable films as the packaging of food products. These films possess bioactivities to enhance the shelf life of packed foods by proactively releasing antimicrobial/antioxidative agents into the foods and providing sufficient barrier properties. Seafood processing byproducts are an eminent source of valuable compounds, including biopolymers and bioactive compounds. These biopolymers, including collagen, gelatin, chitosan, and muscle proteins, could be used to prepare robust and sustainable food packaging with some antimicrobial agents or antioxidants, for example, plant extracts rich in polyphenols or essential oils. These active packaging are not only biodegradable but also prevent the deterioration of packed foods caused by spoilage microorganisms as well as chemical deterioration. Seafood discards have a promising benefit for the development of environmentally friendly food packaging systems via the appropriate preparation methods or techniques. Therefore, the green packaging from seafood leftover can be better exploited and replace the synthetic counterpart.

Multifunctional food packaging materials: Lactoferrin loaded Cr-MOF in films-based gelatin/κ-carrageenan for food packaging applications

In this study, antimicrobial biocomposite films based on gelatin-κ-carrageenan (Gκ) with 1, 2 and 4 % lactoferrin (L) loaded chromium-based metal-organic frameworks (L@Cr-MOFs) nanoparticles were synthesized by casting methods. The addition of L loaded Cr-MOFs into Gκ based films increased elongation at break from 2.19 to 14.92 % and decreased the tensile strength from 65.1 to 31.22 MPa. L@Cr-MOFs addition reduced swelling index (from 105 to 70.8 %), water solubility (from 61.3 to 34.63 %) and water vapor permeability (from 2.46 to 2.19 × 10-11 g. m/m2. s). When the additional amount was 4 wt%, the Gκ/L@Cr-MOFs films showed antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with the inhibition zone of 19.7 mm and 20.2 mm, respectively. In addition, strawberries preservation trial shown that the Gκ/L@Cr-MOFs films delayed the growth of spoilage molds on the surface of fruits. This research indicated that Gκ/L@Cr-MOFs are promising active packaging materials for the preservation of perishable fruits.

The Development of a Novel Sodium Alginate-Based Edible Active Hydrogel Coating and Its Application on Traditional Greek Spreadable Cheese

The necessity of reducing the greenhouse effect by decreasing the carbon dioxide fingerprint directed the food packaging technology to use biobased raw materials. Alginates, which are derived from brown algae species, are one of the most promising biobased biopolymers for the development of edible active coatings capable of protecting food from oxidation/bacterial spoilage. In this study, sodium alginate, which was plasticized with glycerol and mixed with a biobased thymol/natural halloysite nanohybrid, was used to develop novel edible active coatings. Nanocomposite coatings were also developed in this project by mixing pure halloysite with sodium alginate/glycerol matrix and were used as reference material for comparison reasons. Instrumental analysis indicated a higher compatibility of a thymol/halloysite nanohybrid with a sodium alginate/glycerol matrix compared to pure halloysite with a sodium alginate/glycerol matrix. Increased compatibility resulted in improved tensile properties, water/oxygen barrier properties, and total antioxidant activity. These edible active coatings were applied to traditional Greek spread cheese and showed a reduction in the mesophilic microbial population over one log10 unit (cfu/g) compared to uncoated cheese. Moreover, the reduction in the mesophilic microbial population increased with the increase in halloysite and thymol content, indicating such sodium alginate/glycerol/thymol/halloysite hydrogels as promising edible active coatings for dairy products.

A Recent Digitalization in Recycling Industry Attaining Ecological Sustainability: A Comprehensive Outlook and Future Trend

The management of waste through dual way of recycling (i-e offline and online) is assumed to have a key role in attaining ecological sustainability and enabling circular practices. The research on online recycling is gaining evolution in recent age. Prior literature on the current research theme has failed to provide a comprehensive outlook and future trend. Therefore, the current research intends to elaborate the current research scenario linked with online recycling by critically scrutinizing the prior research over the last 41 years. A comprehensive analysis was conducted using the Scopus database, retrieving a total of 866 articles. These articles were selected to provide a conceptual overview and understanding of the fundamental research conducted in the field. By employing bibliometric analysis this research provides comprehensive detail about evolution, mapping of publications and prominent trends from the year 1981 to 2022 to understand the practices and future trends of online recycling research. The outcomes elucidated that there is exponential increase in research publications relating to online recycling over the last five years. The most influential producer of online recycling research are China, United Kingdom and United States. Chinese Universities has the highest number of publications among all the countries across globe. Moreover, the current research trend is focused on technology based circular economy, industrial ecology, bio-based waste management, dual channel recycling, municipal waste, waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), environmental impact and lifecycle assessment. Hence, the prominent research perspective and highlighted features could offer recommendation for upcoming studies to contribute in literature and help practitioners, policymakers and professionals move towards circular practices.

A Comprehensive Mini-Review on Lignin-Based Nanomaterials for Food Applications: Systemic Advancement and Future Trends

The shift to an environmentally friendly material economy requires renewable resource exploration. This shift may depend on lignin valorization. Lignin is an aromatic polymer that makes up one-third of total lingo-cellulosic biomass and is separated into large amounts for biofuel and paper manufacture. This renewable polymer is readily available at a very low cost as nearly all the lignin that is produced each year (90–100 million tons) is simply burned as a low-value fuel. Lignin offers potential qualities for many applications, and yet it is underutilized. This Perspective highlights lignin-based material prospects and problems in food packaging, antimicrobial, and agricultural applications. The first half will discuss the present and future studies on exploiting lignin as an addition to improve food packaging’s mechanical, gas, UV, bioactive molecules, polyphenols, and antioxidant qualities. Second, lignin’s antibacterial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses will be discussed. In conclusion, lignin agriculture will be discussed in the food industries.
