Abstract
Synthesis of a series of iridium(I) complexes of the type [(COD)Ir(IMes)(PPh3)]X (X = BF4, OTf, and BArF) has been established. Application of these species in mild hydrogen isotope exchange processes revealed more efficient catalysis and, further, a wider solvent scope when employing larger, more weakly coordinating counterions.

Abstract
A sterically shielded cationic NHC gold complex IPr**Au-BArF(24) without solvent coordination has been prepared in situ in CH(2)Cl(2). The monovalent transition metal electrophile, a "soft proton", heterolytically activates the C-B bond of the weakly coordinating counterion tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate at room temperature.

Abstract
Highly unsaturated mono(N-heterocyclic carbene) Ir(iii) systems have been targeted via ligand abstraction protocols. Hydrogenation of Ir(IPr)(cod)Cl (1a) leads to the formation of the highly reactive (fluxional) trimer [Ir(IPr)(H)(2)Cl](3), while the related IMes system undergoes further C-H bond activation. Chloride abstraction from 1a prior to hydrogenation allows access to sources of the 12-electron [Ir(IPr)(H)(2)](+) fragment, which, in the absence of a suitable donor, dimerizes to give [{Ir(IPr)(H)(μ-H)}(2)](2+).
