Rapid and solvent-free synthesis of pH-responsive graft-copolymers based on wheat starch and their properties as potential ammonium sorbents

Development of a Novel Energy Saving and Environmentally Friendly Starch via a Graft Copolymerization Strategy for Efficient Warp Sizing and Easy Removal

Warp sizing is a key process in textile production. However, before the yarn/fabric finishing, such as dyeing, the paste adhering to the warp must be eliminated to ensure optimal dyeing properties and the flexibility of the fabric. Therefore, the sizing will often consume a lot of energy and produce a lot of industrial wastewater, which will cause serious harm to the environment. In this study, we have developed an energy saving and environmentally friendly starch-based slurry by modifying natural starch with acrylamide. The paste has excellent viscosity stability and fiber adhesion, and exhibits excellent performance during warp sizing. In addition, the slurry has good water solubility at 60-70 °C, so it is easy to desize at low temperatures. Because of this, the sizing of the warp can be deslimed directly from the yarn during subsequent washing processes. This work can not only reduce some costs for the textile industry, but also achieve the purpose of energy conservation and emission reduction.

Chitosan-based composite hydrogel with a rigid-in-flexible network structure for pH-universal ultra-efficient removal of dye

Polysaccharide-based hydrogel adsorbents become popular because of their high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate, but their low removal rate and poor pH resistance have always been fatal shortcomings. Herein, a feasible strategy was proposed to strengthen the ability of hydrogel adsorbent to remove organic pollutants (i.e., dye) by incorporating natural rectorite (REC) into chitosan-g-poly (2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane-sulfonic-acid) hydrogel network to form a rectorite-in-polymer network structure. The introduction of less dosage of REC (1.2 wt%) into the hydrogel facilitates to improve its adsorption capacities toward methylene blue (MB) in deionized water, tap water, seawater, Yangtze River water, and Yellow River water (1083.39-1303.49 mg/g); while incorporating higher content of REC (15.8 wt% REC) helps to improve the removal rate (99.6 % for MB in real waters), which are greatly superior to commercial activated carbons. The adsorbent keeps high adsorption efficiency in a broad pH range (2-11), and can be reused for >4 times.

Effect of starch microstructure on microwave-assisted esterification

Dry modification of starch, especially by microwave-assisted heating, has attracted increasing attention due to its various advantages, including energy saving, high conversion, rapidity, and avoidance of volatile organic solvents in organic synthesis. This work focuses on two fundamental issues: 1) effect of starch microstructure on dry modification; 2) effect of acid anhydride in solid and liquid states on the dry reaction, since their interfaces with solid starch are significantly different. Cornstarches with different amylose/amylopectin ratios were used to demonstrate the effect of starch microstructure, while two acid anhydrides, maleic (solid) and acetic (liquid) anhydrides, were used to study the reaction mechanisms. FTIR, SEM, XRD, and DSC were used to study the performance of modified starches and the mechanisms. It was found that the degree of substitution (DS) of starches modified by maleic anhydride generally increased with increasing amylose content since amylose contains more hydroxyl groups, resulting in higher sensitivity to microwaves. On the other hand, the DS of starches modified by acetic anhydride increased with increasing amylopectin content, since liquid acetic acid can diffuse into high-amylopectin starch granules. The higher amylopectin starches, waxy and maize, showed higher RC(%) and ∆H(%) than that of higher amylose starches G50 and G80.
