Synthesis and application of eco-friendly superabsorbent composites based on xanthan gum and semi-coke

Eco-friendly natural rubber-based hydrogel loaded with nano-fertilizer as soil conditioner and improved plant growth

This study addresses the dual challenge of agricultural cost and waste management by harnessing agrarian waste to produce nano-fertilizers (NF) to enhance crop yield while mitigating environmental impacts. Recognizing the limitations of traditional hydrogels' non-biodegradability and their inability to sustain root zone moisture and nutrient levels, we developed an LNR/AAc/pectin hydrogel. This innovative hydrogel offers a viable solution that provides a consistent NF supply and improves water retention efficiently. Additionally, we utilized Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to analyze the hydrogel's structure, stability, and form. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) were employed to ascertain the NF concentration. The optimization of the hydrogel's swelling and NF release was conducted through a 5-level, 2-factor Response Surface Methodology (RSM), focusing on the effects of the AAc: LNR ratio and pectin weight while maintaining constant concentrations of potassium persulfate (KPS) and MBA. Results revealed a high correlation between predicted and experimental values, with determination coefficients (R2) of 0.9982 for swelling and 0.9979 for NF release. Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibited a 96.30 % biodegradation rate after 120 days of soil burial. Our findings demonstrate the hydrogels' potential to significantly impact farming and gardening by ensuring a sustainable supply of nutrients to enhance soil moisture retention.

Eco-friendly hydrogel based on locust bean gum for water retaining in sandy soil

Sandy soils are suffering from water loss and desertification, which severely restrict the development of local agriculture. In this work, an eco-friendly hydrogel composed of borax and locust bean gum was synthesized to enhance the water retention capacity of sandy soil and support agricultural development in arid regions. Locust bean gum/borax hydrogel with a 3D network structure exhibited great water-absorbing capacity (130.29 g/g) within 30 min. After mixing 0.9 wt% hydrogel with sandy soil, the maximum soil water content, water retention time, soil porosity and soil organic matter were increased by 32.03 %, 14 days, 38.9 % and 8.64 g/kg respectively. Little effect on soil microorganisms revealed barely toxicity. Furthermore, the hydrogel was confirmed to be biodegradable at 43.47 % after 4 weeks. According to the study, locust bean gum/borax hydrogel possesses good water absorbing capacity, soil water retention ability, soil optimization ability and low adverse environmental impact. Together, it is inferred that the hydrogel can improve the water retention capacity of sandy soil in arid areas, promoting plant growth in arid areas.

Effect of chain structures of monomer on hydroxyethyl cellulose-based superabsorbent properties and improvement of chickpeas plant growth of water deficit-stressed

The aim of this research was evaluation of the influence of distance between zwitterionic monomer ions on the performance of superabsorbents. For this purpose, two zwitterionic monomers 4-(3-aminopropyl) amino-4-oxo-2-butenoic acid (APOB) and 4-(6-aminohexyl) amino-4-oxo-2-butenoic acid (AHOB) were prepared and applied for synthesis of two new superabsorbents through graft copolymerization onto hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) in the presence of acrylic acid (AA). In synthesis of superabsorbents factors such as the highest water absorbency capacity, absorbency rate, gel strength, and environmental problems should be resolved or improved. The results demonstrated that the water absorbency capacity and rate parameters (τ) of HEC-g-p(AA-co-APOB) and HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) in distilled water were 986.62, 664.38 g/g, and 98.04, 140.84 min, respectively. The biodegradability of HEC-g-p(AA-co-APOB) was approximately 4 times more than HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB). However, based on the rheological analyses (G'/G″) HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) was stronger than the other. Additionally, studies of water retention on soil containing HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) superabsorbent (soil with 0.25 wt% material) showed that the after 30 days has ≤5 % water while soil in the absence of superabsorbent after 10 days completely dried. Studies of the growth of plants in soil demonstrated in the presence of HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) the average length of shoots was 36 cm while without superabsorbent were 25 cm.

Synthesis and property of superabsorbent polymer based on cellulose grafted 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid

An eco-friendly superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was prepared by grafting 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid onto microcrystalline cellulose in lithium chloride/N, N-dimethylacetamide system. The synthesized SAP (cellulose-g-PAMPS) was characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and XRD. The water absorption equilibrium of cellulose-g-PAMPS could be achieved within 10 min in distilled water. Moreover, the maximum water absorption capacities of cellulose-g-PAMPS in distilled water, 0.9 wt% NaCl solution and 3.2 wt% Na₂CO₃ solution were 648.9, 298.4 and 207.3 g·g^-1, respectively. The water absorption behavior of cellulose-g-PAMPS was interpreted by the pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, cellulose-g-PAMPS could be used in some extreme conditions due to its high acid and alkali resistance. The water retention rate of cellulose-g-PAMPS could be maintained above 90 % at 25 °C for 6 h. As a consequence, the synthesized SAP can be applied to increase the plant growth and survival time under drought conditions, even under saline alkali conditions.

Effects of polysaccharides' molecular structure on membrane fouling and the related mechanisms

Fouling behaviors of polysaccharides vary with their structure, while the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unexplored. This work was carried out to explore the thermodynamic fouling mechanisms of polysaccharides with different structure. Carrageenan and xanthan gum were selected as the model polysaccharides with structure of straight and branch chains, respectively. Batch filtration experiments showed that xanthan gum solution corresponded to a more rapid flux decline trend, and specific filtration resistance (SFR) of xanthan gum (2.32 × 10¹⁵ m^-1 kg^-1) was over 10 times than that of carrageenan (2.21 × 10¹⁴ m^-1 kg^-1). It was found that, xanthan gum possessed a more disordered structure and a rather higher viscosity (15.03 mPa·s V.S. 1.98 mPa·s for carrageenan). Calculation of extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory showed higher adhesion energy of xanthan gum (-42.82 my m^-2 V.S. -23.26 mJ m^-2 for carrageenan). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses showed that xanthan gum gel layer had a more homogenous structure and rigid polymer backbone, indicating better mixing with water to form a gel. As verified by heating experiments, such a structure tended to contain more bound water. According to this information, Flory-Huggins lattice theory was introduced to build a bridge between polymeric structure and SFR. It was revealed that branch structure corresponded to higher chemical potential change during gel layer formation, and higher ability to carry bound water, resulting in higher filtration resistance during filtration process. This work revealed the fundamental thermodynamic mechanism of membrane fouling caused by polysaccharides with different structure, deepening understanding of membrane fouling.
