Understanding sex differences in health-related quality of life following myocardial infarction

Predictors of health-related quality of life in outpatients with coronary heart disease

Introduction

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important treatment target in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and is associated with poor outcomes. Therefore, it is of clinical importance to identify the key determinants of HRQoL among these patients. There is, however, limited knowledge of how a comprehensive set of psychosocial factors influence HRQoL. We aimed to determine the relative associations of clinical and psychosocial factors with mental and physical components of HRQoL in a sample of CHD outpatients.

Methods

This cross-sectional study included 1,042 patients 2-36 (mean 16) months after a CHD event recruited from two general Norwegian hospitals with a combined catchment area making up 7% of the Norwegian population, representative with regards to demographic and clinical factors. We collected data on HRQoL, demographics, comorbidities, coronary risk factors, and psychosocial factors. HRQoL was assessed using the Short Form 12 (SF12), which comprises a Mental Component Scale (MCS), and the Physical Component Scale (PCS). Crude and multi-adjusted linear regression analyses were used to investigate the association between covariates and MCS and PCS.

Results

Mean age was 61 [standard deviation (SD) 10] years, 20% were females, 18% had type D personality, 20% significant depression symptoms, 14% significant symptoms of anxiety whereas 45% reported insomnia. The presence of type D personality (β: -0.19), significant symptoms of depression (β: -0.15), and the presence of insomnia (β: -0.13) were negatively associated with MCS, but not PCS in multi-adjusted analyses. The presence of chronic kidney disease (β: -0.11) was associated with reduced MCS, whereas the presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (β: -0.08) and low physical activity (β: -0.14) were negatively associated with PCS. Younger age was associated with lower MCS, whereas older age was associated with lower PCS.

Discussion

We conclude that Type D personality, depressive symptoms, insomnia, and chronic kidney disease were the strongest determinants of the mental component of HRQoL. Assessing and managing these psychological factors among CHD outpatients may improve their mental HRQoL.

Healthcare Costs and Health-Related Quality of Life in Older Multimorbid Patients After Hospitalization

Objectives

We identified factors associated with healthcare costs and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of multimorbid older adults with polypharmacy.

Methods

Using data from the OPERAM (OPtimising thERapy to prevent Avoidable hospital admissions in the Multimorbid older people) trial, we described the magnitude and composition of healthcare costs, and time trends of HRQoL, during 1-year after an acute-care hospitalization. We performed a cluster analysis to identify groups with different cost and HRQoL trends. Using multilevel models, we also identified factors associated with costs and HRQoL.

Results

Two months after hospitalization monthly mean costs peaked (CHF 7'124) and HRQoL was highest (0.67). They both decreased thereafter. Age, falls, and comorbidities were associated with higher 1-year costs. Being female and housebound were negatively associated with HRQoL, while moderate alcohol consumption had a positive association. Being independent in daily activities was associated with lower costs and higher HRQoL.

Conclusion

Although only some identified potential influences on costs and HRQoL are modifiable, our observations support the importance of prevention before health deterioration in older people with multimorbid illness and associated polypharmacy.

Long-Term Quality of Life of Vestibular Schwannoma Patients: A Longitudinal Analysis

OBJECTIVE

Vestibular schwannoma management aims to maintain optimal quality of life (QoL) while preventing severe sequelae of the tumor or its treatment. This study assessed long-term QoL of patients with vestibular schwannoma in relation to treatment modality and decisional regret.

STUDY DESIGN

A longitudinal study, in which clinical and QoL data were used that were cross-sectionally acquired in 2014 and again in 2020 from the same patient group.

SETTING

A tertiary expert center for vestibular schwannoma care in the Netherlands.

METHODS

QoL was measured by the Penn Acoustic Quality of Life (PANQOL) scale. Changes in time were assed using a linear mixed model. In addition, the Decision Regret Scale was analyzed.

RESULTS

Of 867 patients, 536 responded (62%), with a median follow-up of 11 years. All PANQOL subdomain scores remained stable over time and did not exceed minimal clinically important difference (MCID) levels. Time since treatment did not affect QoL. Patients had comparable average QoL scores and proportions of patients with changing QoL scores (ie, exceeding the MCID) over time, irrespective of the received initial treatment. Female patients and those who required salvage therapy (either by radiotherapy or surgery) reported a lower QoL. The latter patient group reported the highest decisional regret.

CONCLUSION

On average, the long-term QoL of patients with vestibular schwannoma is comparable for patients under active surveillance and those who have received active treatment, and it remains stable over time. This suggests that, on average, preservation of QoL of patients with vestibular schwannoma is feasible when adequately managed.

Sex differences in quality of life of patients following percutaneous coronary intervention in Vietnam

PURPOSE

Data regarding the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in men and women after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in low-and-middle incomes countries remains scarce. To investigate sex difference in the HRQoL at 30 days and 12 months post PCI in Vietnam.

METHODS

We used data from a single percutaneous coronary registry established in the Vietnam National Heart Institute. The HRQoL was measured using the EQ-5D-3L instrument via telephone interviews, and information about demographics, clinical presentation and procedures was obtained through face-to-face interviews and medical records. The HRQoL between men and women were compared using independent samples t tests, the Mann-Whitney U test or univariate/multivariate logistic regression.

RESULTS

There were 866 patients included in this cohort, with the proportion of women being nearly half of men (32.1 vs 67.9%). Women were 3.5 years older, had lower income and educational levels but greater prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. At 30 days, women significantly had more problems in mobility, personal care and pain/discomfort compared to men. At 12 months, women had more problem than men in usual activity. The geometric means of HRQoL was lower in women at 30 days, but not in 12 months. From 30 days to 12 months after discharge, women showed better recovery in mobility compared to men, but not in other dimensions.

CONCLUSIONS

In this first insight of sex differences in HRQoL following PCI in Vietnam, women appeared to have worse quality of life, especially at 30 days after discharge but they showed better recovery in mobility at 12 months compared to men.

Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and the Effect on Outcome in Patients Presenting with Coronary Artery Disease and Treated with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI): Differences Noted by Sex and Age

Background and aim: poor quality of life (QoL) has been identified as an independent risk factor for mortality and major cardiac events (MACE) in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of this study was to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) at baseline and its association with outcome in patients with coronary artery disease presenting for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The outcome was measured by mortality and MACE at 1-year, and whether there was any difference for sex and different age groups. Methods and results: all patients prospectively enrolled into the GenesisCare Outcome Registry (GCOR) over a 11-year period were included in the study. The EQ-5D-5L and VAS patient survey were used for assessment of baseline HRQoL. Of the 15,198 patients, only 6591 (43.4%) completed the self-assessment. Women had significantly more impairment of all five dimensions of the EQ-5D-5L survey, and their self-reported QoL was significantly lower than men (68.3 in women vs. 71.9 in men, p < 0.001). Poor QoL was strongly associated with increased mortality (HR 2.85; 95% CI 1.76 to 4.62, p < 0.001) and MACE (HR 1.40; 95% CI 1.10 to 1.79, p = 0.01). A similar trend was noted for women and men, but did not reach significance in women due to the smaller number of female patients. Conclusion: poor HRQoL is associated with subsequent mortality and MACE in patients undergoing PCI. By not assessing quality of life as a standard of care, an opportunity is lost to identify high-risk patients who may benefit from targeted interventions to improve health outcomes.

Women's Health-Related Quality of Life Substantially Improves With Tailored Cardiac Rehabilitation: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS

PURPOSE

Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (EBCR) offers an opportunity to improve women's otherwise poorer outcomes from coronary heart disease compared with men. However, synthesized evidence for the benefits of EBCR for health-related quality of life (HRQL) is lacking for women. The current study addresses this gap.

METHODS

Four electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and Cochrane) were searched for studies reporting HRQL using validated questionnaires in women attending EBCR. Two reviewers independently screened articles and extracted data. A random effects model was used for meta-analysis, where possible.

RESULTS

Eleven studies (1237 women) were included, with seven suitable for meta-analyses. Participation in EBCR improved multiple domains of HRQL, with greatest improvements in Role Physical (mean differences [MD] = 19.09: 95% CI, 2.37-35.81), Physical Functioning (MD = 10.43: 95% CI, 2.60-18.27), and Vitality (MD = 9.59: 95% CI, 0.31-18.86) domains of the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey. Adding psychosocial components tailored for women to traditional EBCR produced further gains in HRQL in Bodily Pain (MD = 9.82: 95% CI, 4.43-15.21), Role Physical (MD = 8.48: 95% CI, 1.31-9.97), Vitality (MD = 8.17: 95% CI, 3.79-12.55), General Health (MD = 5.64: 95% CI, 1.31-9.97), and Physical Functioning (MD = 5.61: 95% CI, 0.83-10.40) domains.

CONCLUSIONS

Women attending EBCR achieve clinically meaningful improvements in multiple areas of HRQL, with added benefits when strategies were tailored to their needs. These benefits should be highlighted to promote EBCR uptake in women.

Sex Differences in Health Status and Clinical Outcomes After Nonprimary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

BACKGROUND

Greater insight into sex-based differences in health status can lay the foundation for more equitable health care. This study compares differences in health status of women and men in the CPORT-E trial (Cardiovascular Patient Outcomes Research Team Non-Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) undergoing nonprimary percutaneous coronary intervention.

METHODS

We compared Seattle Angina Questionnaire scores at baseline, 6 weeks, and 9 months for 6851 women and 12 016 men undergoing nonprimary percutaneous coronary intervention.

RESULTS

Proportions of angina-free patients increased from 26.2% and 29.8% at baseline to 71.6% and 78.7% at 6 weeks to 78.1% and 83.0% at 9 months in women and men, respectively (P<0.001 for all). After adjusting for clinical and procedural characteristics as well as baseline angina, freedom from angina in women was 34% less likely at 6 weeks (odds ratio, 0.66 [95% CI, 0.61-0.71]; P<0.001) and 32% less likely at 9 months (odds ratio, 0.68 [95% CI, 0.62-0.74]; P<0.001) compared with men.

CONCLUSIONS

Although health status increased significantly after percutaneous coronary intervention in both women and men, women had poorer health status outcomes than men before and after percutaneous coronary intervention. Additional investigation into therapies that address the causes of poorer health status in women with coronary artery disease is needed. Health-related quality of life in men and women who experienced cardiovascular diseases: Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study

Background

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are among the most common causes of death worldwide, including in Iran. Considering the adverse effects of CVDs on physical and psychosocial health; this study aims to investigate the association between experience of CVDs and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adult participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS).

Methods

The participants of this cross-sectional study were 7009 adults (≥ 20 years) who participated in the TLGS during 2014–2017. Demographic information and HRQoL data was collected through validated questionnaires by trained interviewers. HRQoL was assessed by the Iranian version of the SF-12 questionnaire. Data was analyzed using the SPSS software.

Results

The mean age of participants was 46.8 ± 14.6 years and 46.1% of them were men. A total of 9.0% of men and 4.4% of women had CVDs. In men, the mean physical HRQoL summary score was significantly lower in those with CVDs compared to those without CVDs (46.6 ± 0.8 vs. 48.5 ± 0.7, p > 0.001). In women, the mean mental HRQoL summary scores was significantly lower in those with CVDs compared to those without CVDs (42.8 ± 1.0 vs. 45.2 ± 0.5, p = 0.009). In adjusted models, men with CVDs were more likely to report poor physical HRQoL compared to men without CVDs (OR(95%CI): 1.93(1.32–2.84), p = 0.001); whereas for women, the chance of reporting poor mental HRQoL was 68% higher in those with CVDs than those without CVDs (OR(95%CI): 1.68(1.11–2.54), p = 0.015).

Conclusion

The findings of the current study indicate poorer HRQoL in those who experienced CVDs compared to their healthy counterparts with a sex specific pattern. While for men, CVDs were associated with more significant impairment in the physical dimension of HRQoL, women experienced a similar impairment in the mental dimension of HRQoL.

Health-Related Quality of Life Among Myocardial Infarction Survivors: Structural Equation Modeling Approach

BACKGROUND

Myocardial infarction is the fifth leading causes of disability-adjusted life years in low-income countries including Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to construct a hypothetical model to determine the factors affecting the health-related quality of life of myocardial infarction survivors at the cardiac center Ethiopia.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study design was employed, and 421 myocardial infarction patients were enrolled through consecutive sampling technique from the outpatient clinic at the cardiac center of Ethiopia. The World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF-26 tool was used to assess the problem. It consists of four domains such as physical, psychological, social relationships, and environmental health domains. The structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis was employed using STATA-14 software to examine the relationship between various exogenous and endogenous or mediating variables with overall quality of life.

RESULTS

Psychological, physical, environmental health domains and sex had significant association with health-related quality of life (β=0.708, p<0.001, β= 0.237, p=0.046, β=0.242, p=0.020, and β=0.189, p=0.017, respectively), whereas age had direct, negative association with health-related quality of life (β=-0.007, p=0.026). Residence and level of education were not directly associated with health-related quality of life. Residence indirectly, negatively influenced health-related quality of life (β= -0.379, p<0.001). On the other hand, level of education indirectly, positively affects health-related quality of life (β=i0.133, p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

Psychological health factors had the most substantial causal effect on health-related quality of life, which was larger than the causal effects of physical and environmental health-related factors. Developing and providing comprehensive interventions are necessary to assess and manage psychological, physical, and environmental health factors and to improve the quality of life in myocardial infarction patients.

Burden of Kidney Disease, Health-Related Quality of Life, and Employment Among Patients Receiving Peritoneal Dialysis and In-Center Hemodialysis: Findings From the DOPPS Program

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE

Individuals faced with decisions regarding kidney replacement therapy options need information on how dialysis treatments might affect daily activities and quality of life, and what factors might influence the evolution over time of the impact of dialysis on daily activities and quality of life.

STUDY DESIGN

Observational cohort study.

SETTING & PARTICIPANTS

7,771 hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) participants from 6 countries participating in the Peritoneal and Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Studies (PDOPPS/DOPPS).

PREDICTORS

Patient-reported functional status (based on daily living activities), country, demographic and clinical characteristics, and comorbidities.

OUTCOME

Employment status and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) including Kidney Disease Quality of Life (KDQOL) instrument physical and mental component summary scores (PCS, MCS), kidney disease burden score, and depression symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale [CES-D] score > 10).

ANALYTICAL APPROACH

Linear regression (PCS, MCS, kidney disease burden score), logistic regression (depression symptoms), adjusted for predictors plus 12 additional comorbidities.

RESULTS

In both dialysis modalities, patients in Japan had the highest PCS and employment (55% for HD and 68% for PD), whereas those in the United States had the highest MCS score, lowest kidney disease burden, and lowest employment (20% in HD and 42% in PD). After covariate adjustment, the association of age, sex, dialysis vintage, diabetes, and functional status with PROs was similar in both modalities, with women having lower PCS and kidney disease burden scores. Lower functional status (score <11) was strongly associated with lower PCS and MCS scores, a much greater burden of kidney disease, and greater likelihood of depression symptoms (CES-D, >10). The median change in KDQOL-based PROs was negligible over 1 year in participants who completed at least 2 annual questionnaires.

LIMITATIONS

Selection bias due to incomplete survey responses. Generalizability was limited to the dialysis populations of the included countries.

CONCLUSIONS

Variation exists in quality of life, burden of kidney disease, and depression across countries but did not appreciably change over time. Functional status remained one of the strongest predictors of all PROs. Routine assessment of functional status may provide valuable insights for patients and providers in anticipating outcomes and support needs for patients receiving either PD or HD.

How gender-specific are predictors of post-MI HRQoL? A longitudinal study

Purpose

Extant research shows that health-related quality of life (HRQoL) differs between female and male survivors of myocardial infarction (MI), but the reasons for this are not fully understood. We aimed to examine the predictors of HRQoL in female and male survivors during the first year after MI.

Methods

At timepoints 1 and 2, the sample comprised 222 MI survivors (59 women and 163 men; mean age 53.84 years, range 24–65) referred for in-patient cardiac rehabilitation. This number dropped to 140 participants (42 women and 98 men) at the third timepoint, approximately one year after the MI. We examined the gender differences in various predictors of physical and mental HRQoL: demographic factors (e.g., age, education, marital status), disease-related factors (pre- and post-MI), personality and coping with stress.

Results

Initially, both physical and mental HRQoL were lower in women than men, but the differences disappeared at timepoint 3. Stepwise regressions performed separately for men and women revealed that the factors shaping HRQoL were different in both genders; they also changed over time. Substantially fewer factors predicted physical HRQoL in women than in men. Trait anxiety seems to play a similarly negative role in both genders.

Conclusions

The psychosocial resources that influence HRQoL were different for women and men. There were also differences concerning predictors of HRQoL dimensions. Further studies with a different or broader range of predictors are needed, especially among women.

Gender differences in quality of life in coronary artery disease patients with comorbidities undergoing coronary revascularization

In comparison to male patients with coronary artery disease, female patients suffer from more comorbidities, experience symptoms of coronary artery disease differently and report poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after coronary revascularization. However, there is limited data on the impact of comorbidity burden on the recovery in HRQoL in female and male patients. We investigated the impact of comorbidity burden on the change in HRQoL following coronary revascularization in female patients versus male patients. 230 patients (60 female) with coronary artery disease were assessed before, and two weeks, three months and six months after coronary revascularization. Disease-specific HRQoL was measured with the Short-Form Seattle Angina Questionnaire. Physical and mental health was measured with the Short-Form Health Survey. Comorbidity burden was assessed by the total number of identified comorbidity conditions and by the Charlson comorbidity score. Linear mixed models were used to estimate the effects of time, gender and comorbidity burden on HRQoL. Whereas HRQoL improved after coronary revascularization in all patients, female patients reported poorer physical health and disease-specific HRQoL and their physical health improved more slowly than male patients. A higher comorbidity burden was related with poorer physical health and disease-specific HRQoL in male patients, but not in female patients. A higher comorbidity burden was associated with slower improvement in HRQoL for both female and male patients. Female patients reported poorer HRQoL and their physical health improved more slowly after coronary revascularization, irrespective of comorbidity burden. Higher comorbidity burden was associated with poorer physical health and disease-specific HRQoL in male patients only. Our results indicate that female and male patients recover differently after coronary revascularization. These findings highlight the importance of comorbidity- and gender-specific approaches for evaluating coronary artery disease and coronary revascularization procedures.

Does sex predict quality of life after acute coronary syndromes: an Australian, state-wide, multicentre prospective cohort study

OBJECTIVE

Women have reported higher mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) following acute coronary syndromes (ACSs) compared with men. With this in mind, we aimed to identify predictors of poor quality of life (QoL) post-ACS as our primary outcome. We examined predictors of MACE, major cerebrovascular events and major bleeding as our secondary outcome.

DESIGN

Prospective cohort study.

SETTING

30 metropolitan centres across the Victorian Cardiac Outcomes Registry network.

PARTICIPANTS

16 517 patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ACS (22.9% females). Selection/inclusion criteria: consecutive patients with successful or attempted PCI for ACS from 2013 to 2016, alive at 30 days post-PCI.

EXCLUSION CRITERIA

patients not fulfilling ACS criteria. At 30 days, 2497 (64.7% females) completed the QoL EQ-5D-3L instrument.

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES

QoL, assessed using the EuroQo-5Dimensions (EQ-5D-3L) instrument by telephone at 30 days. Independent predictors of QoL were identified by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.

RESULTS

Women were significantly older with more diabetes, cerebrovascular disease and renal failure. Regarding the primary outcome, female sex was independently associated with moderate/severe impairment in all EQ-5D-3L domains including mobility (OR 2.38, 95% CI 2.06 to 2.75, p<0.001), personal care (OR 2.14, 95% CI 1.73 to 2.66, p<0.001), activities of daily living (OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.63 to 2.08, p<0.001), pain/discomfort (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.24 to 1.67, p<0.001) and anxiety/depression (OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.30 to 1.70, p<0.001). Women had significantly lower self-rated Visual Analogue Scale scores (80.0 for both groups, IQR 60-85 vs 70-90, p<0.001). There was no significant difference between the sexes in secondary outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

Female sex was a predictor of poorer QoL following PCI for ACS including significantly higher pain, anxiety and depression. This was independent of age, comorbidities and ACS presentation. There is a clinical need for a tailored approach in female ACS management, for example, emphasis on management of depressive and anxiety symptoms.

The use of echocardiographic and clinical data recorded on admission to simplify decision making for elective percutaneous coronary intervention: a prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

Coronary artery disease (CAD), a leading cause of mortality, affects patient health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Elective percutaneous coronary interventions (ePCIs) are usually performed to improve HRQoL of CAD patients. The aim of this study was to design models using admission data to predict the outcomes of the ePCI treatments on the patients' HRQoL.

METHODS

This prospective cohort study was conducted with CAD patients who underwent ePCIs at the King Abdullah University Hospital in Jordan from January 2014 through May 2015. Six months after their ePCI procedures, the participants completed the improved MacNew (QLMI-2) questionnaire, which was used for evaluating three domains (physical, emotional and social) of HRQoL. Multivariate linear regression was used to design models to predict the three domains of HRQoL from echocardiographic findings and clinical data that are routinely measured on admission.

RESULTS

The study included 239 patients who underwent ePCIs and responded to the QLMI-2 questionnaire. The mean age (± standard deviation) of the participants was 55.74 ± 11.84 years, 54.58 ± 11.37 years for males (n = 174) and 59.11 ± 12.49 years for females (n = 65). The average scores for physical, emotional and social HRQoL were 4.38 ± 1.27, 4.4 ± 1.11, and 4.37 ± 1.32, respectively. Out of the 42 factors inputted to the models to predict HRQoL scores, 10, 9, and 9 factors were found to be significant determinants for physical, emotional and social domains, respectively, with adjusted coefficients of determination of 0.630, 0.604 and 0.534, respectively. Basophil levels on admission showed a significant positive correlation with the three domains of HRQoL, while aortic root diameter showed a negative correlation. Scores for the three domains were significantly lower in women than in men. Hypertensive and diabetic patients had significantly lower HRQoL scores than patients without hypertension and diabetes.

CONCLUSION

The prediction of HRQoL scores 6 months after an ePCI is possible based on data acquired on admission. The models developed here can be used as decision-making tools to guide physicians in identifying the efficacy of ePCIs for individual patients, hence decreasing the rate of inappropriate ePCIs and reducing costs and complications.

Gender Differences of Nonmotor Symptoms Affecting Quality of Life in Parkinson Disease

BACKGROUND/AIMS

Gender differences of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with various disorders have been reported. Various nonmotor symptoms (NMSs) also affect the patients' lives and HRQoL, even in the early stages of Parkinson disease (PD). Our study aimed to identify whether there are gender differences of HRQoL in PD patients in the early stages, and which NMSs are associated with HRQoL depending on gender.

METHOD

Eighty-nine PD patients (47 males, 42 females) and 36 healthy controls were enrolled. We evaluated HRQoL, NMSs, and their associations in each gender.

RESULT

The total Parkinson Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire and Beck Anxiety Inventory scores were higher in female patients than in male patients. The correlation analysis revealed no association between NMSs and HRQoL in male patients. In female patients, HRQoL was highly correlated with depression, and moderately associated with fatigue.

CONCLUSIONS

Gender differences of an association between HRQoL and NMSs exist in PD. We found that fatigue and depression were the main determinants of poor HRQoL in female patients even in the early stages. We suggest that a gender-specific therapeutic approach is important, and it is necessary to pay special attention to the predictors associated with causing poor HRQoL.

Correlates of health-related quality of life in patients with myocardial infarction: A literature review

BACKGROUND

By the increasing emphasis on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with myocardial infarction (MI), it is necessary to explore factors that affect HRQoL in this population.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to identify correlates of HRQoL in patients with MI.

DESIGN

A literature review of the factors that affect HRQoL in patients with MI (1995-2016).

DATA SOURCES

Three main databases-CINAHL, MEDLINE and PsychINFO-were searched to retrieve relevant peer-reviewed articles published in English.

REVIEW METHODS

In consultation with a medical librarian, we identified relevant MeSH terms and used them for searching the literature: health-related quality of life/quality of life/HRQoL/QoL, myocardial infarction/heart attack/MI and predict*/factor. Data elements were extracted and narratively described variables synthesised into four categories.

RESULTS

A total of 48 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Correlates of HRQoL in patients with MI were identified in the following categories: demographic, behavioural, disease-related, and psychosocial factors. Specific correlates included age and gender-identity for demographic factors; physical activity and smoking for behavioural factors; severity of MI, symptoms, and comorbidities for disease-related factors; anxiety and depression for psychosocial factors.

CONCLUSIONS

Identifying correlates of HRQoL can help identify patients who are at risk for poor HRQoL in the recovery or rehabilitation stage of post-MI. Future intervention should focus on adjustable correlates such as behavioural and psychosocial factors to promote HRQoL among patients after experiencing MI.

Health-related quality of life, sense of coherence and leisure-time physical activity in women after an acute myocardial infarction

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To examine the relationship between leisure-time physical activity, health-related quality of life and sense of coherence in women after an acute myocardial infarction, and further to investigate whether these aspects were associated with age.

BACKGROUND

Physical activity and health-related quality of life are vital aspects for patients after an acute myocardial infarction.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional.

METHOD

All eligible women diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction received a postal questionnaire two to three months after hospital discharge, and 142 women were included. To measure health-related quality of life and sense of coherence, The MacNew Heart disease questionnaire and the Sense of coherence-13 scale was used.

RESULTS

Respondents reporting at least one type of physical activity had significantly higher health-related quality of life as compared to respondents reporting no kind of physical activity. Respondents reporting physical activity for at least 30 minutes twice a week had significantly higher health-related quality of life scores than respondents being active less than twice a week. A weak association was found between physical activity level and sense of coherence. Reduction in physical activity after the acute myocardial infarction was associated with reduced health-related quality of life and sense of coherence. Sense of coherence was significantly associated with age, as respondents 75 years and older had significantly higher scores than respondents younger than 75 years.

CONCLUSIONS

Physical activity, even at a low level, is significantly associated with increased health-related quality of life and to some extent to sense of coherence.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Tailoring women after an acute myocardial infarction about lifestyle changes must include knowledge about the benefits of leisure-time physical activity, and that even a small amount of activity is associated with a better health-related quality of life. The utmost important assignment is to motivate the women for regular physical activity in their leisure-time. Older women need special attention.

Sex differences in the quality of life of patients with acute coronary syndrome treated with percutaneous coronary intervention after a 3-year follow-up

BACKGROUND

The aims of this study were to analyze the dynamics of quality of life (QoL) changes after 36 months from the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) depending on sex and identify baseline predictors of the follow-up QoL of patients hospitalized for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and subjected to PCI.

METHODS AND RESULTS

The study included 137 patients, females (n=67) and males (n=70), with ACS who underwent PCI. The QoL was assessed using the MacNew Heart Disease Health-Related Quality of Life questionnaire. The group of females scored lower in all the domains of the MacNew Heart Disease Health-Related Quality of Life questionnaire in the initial measurement (B 1), in the measurement after 6 months (B 2), and in the long-term follow-up measurement (36 months - B 3). Despite the fact that both groups achieved improved QoL, its values were higher in the males. The average growth rate of the QoL score in the period from the sixth month to 36th month was higher in females than in males. In the univariate and multivariate analyses, significant independent predictors with a negative influence on the long-term QoL score included female sex (ρ=-0.190, β=-0.21), age >60 years (ρ=-0.255, β=-0.186), and diabetes (ρ=-0.216, β=-0.216).

CONCLUSION

In a 36-month follow-up of ACS patients treated with PCI, there were no statistically significant differences in QoL between sexes. In the entire cohort, there was improvement in QoL, which was higher in the case of the females studied. For the entire group, significant independent determinants of lower QoL 3 years after ACS included female sex, age >60 years, and diabetes.

Factors associated with quality of life in patients with cirrhosis

AIM: To investigate and evaluate the factors related to the quality of life in patients with cirrhosis.

METHODS: The quality of life for 214 cirrhosis patients treated at our hospital was assessed using the Chinese version of Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Relevant clinical data for patients were also collected to conduct univariate analysis and multivariate stepwise regression analysis.

RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed that factors affecting the quality of life in all dimensions in patients with cirrhosis were percentage of treatment costs accounting for family income, fatigue, anorexia, dizziness, family economic burden, anxiety and depression (P < 0.05). Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that age, dizziness, loss of appetite, anxiety, depression, and family economic burden significantly affect the quality of life scores in patients with cirrhosis (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION: The factors influencing the quality of life in patients with cirrhosis are complex and multifactorial.

Gender differences in the trajectory of recovery in health status among young patients with acute myocardial infarction: results from the variation in recovery: role of gender on outcomes of young AMI patients (VIRGO) study

BACKGROUND

Despite the excess risk of mortality in young women (≤55 years of age) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI), little is known about young women's health status (symptoms, functioning, quality of life) during the first year of recovery after an AMI. We examined gender differences in health status over time from baseline to 12 months after AMI.

METHODS AND RESULTS

A total of 3501 AMI patients (67% women) 18 to 55 years of age were enrolled from 103 US and 24 Spanish hospitals. Data were obtained by medical record abstraction and patient interviews at baseline hospitalization and 1 and 12 months after AMI. Health status was measured by generic (Short Form-12) and disease-specific (Seattle Angina Questionnaire) measures. We compared health status scores at all 3 time points and used longitudinal linear mixed-effects analyses to examine the independent effect of gender, adjusting for time and selected covariates. Women had significantly lower health status scores than men at each assessment (all P values <0.0001). After adjustment for time and all covariates, women had Short Form-12 physical/mental summary scores that were -0.96 (95% confidence interval [CI], -1.59 to -0.32) and -2.36 points (95% CI, -2.99 to -1.73) lower than those of men, as well as worse Seattle Angina Questionnaire physical limitations (-2.44 points lower; 95% CI, -3.53 to -1.34), more angina (-1.03 points lower; 95% CI, -1.98 to -0.07), and poorer quality of life (-3.51 points lower; 95% CI, -4.80 to -2.22).

CONCLUSION

Although both genders recover similarly after AMI, women have poorer scores than men on all health status measures, a difference that persisted throughout the entire year after discharge.

Gender differences in pre-event health status of young patients with acute myocardial infarction: A VIRGO study analysis

AIMS

We assessed gender differences in pre-event health status (symptoms, functioning, quality of life) in young patients with acute myocardial infarction and whether or not this association persists following sequential adjustment for important covariates. We also evaluated the interaction between gender and prior coronary artery disease, given that aggressive symptom control is a cornerstone of care in those with known coronary disease.

METHODS AND RESULTS

A total of 3501 acute myocardial infarction patients (2349 women) aged 18-55 years were enrolled from 103 US/24 Spanish hospitals (2008-2012). Clinical/health status information was obtained by medical record abstraction and patient interviews. Pre-event health status was measured by generic (Short Form-12, EuroQoL) and disease-specific (Seattle Angina Questionnaire) measures. T-test/chi-square and multivariable linear/logistic regression analysis was utilized, sequentially adjusting for covariates. Women had more co-morbidities and significantly lower generic mean health scores than men (Short Form-12 physical health = 43 ± 12 vs. 46 ± 11 and mental health = 44 ± 13 vs. 48 ± 11); EuroQoL utility index = 0.7 ± 0.2 vs. 0.8 ± 0.2 and visual analog scale = 63 ± 22 vs. 67 ± 20, P < 0.0001 for all. Their disease-specific health status was also worse, with more angina (Seattle Angina Questionnaire angina frequency = 83 ± 22 vs. 87 ± 18), worse physical function (physical limitation = 78 ± 27 vs. 87 ± 21) and poorer quality of life (55 ± 25 vs. 60 ± 22, P<0.0001 for all). In multivariable analysis, the association between female gender and worse generic physical/mental health persisted, as well as worse disease-specific physical limitation and quality of life. The interaction between gender and prior coronary artery disease was not significant in any of the health status outcomes.

CONCLUSION

Young women have worse pre-event health status as compared with men, regardless of their coronary artery disease history. While future studies of gender differences should adjust for baseline health status, an opportunity may exist to better address the pre-event health status of women at risk for acute myocardial infarction.

Predictors of Health-Related Quality of Life Among Patients With Myocardial Infarction

This cross-sectional correlational study aimed to examine health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and its predictors among patients with myocardial infarction (MI). One hundred and twenty-eight outpatients with MI were recruited from a university hospital. The 12-item Short-Form Health Survey version 2, Myocardial Infarction Dimensional Assessment Scale (MIDAS), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were used to measure the study variables. Compared with the findings of similar studies of patients with MI, this sample, despite having significant coronary risk factors, reported generally better HRQoL. Predictors of physical HRQoL included low monthly household income, whereas predictors of mental HRQoL included ex-smoker, alcohol use, hypertension, anxiety, and depression. Special attention may need to be given to those people with a low income level, who are ex-smokers, use alcohol, or have hypertension, anxiety, or depression.

Health-related quality of life in premature acute coronary syndrome: does patient sex or gender really matter?

Background

Limited data exist as to the relative contribution of sex and gender on health‐related quality of life (HRQL) among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This study aims to evaluate the effect of sex and gender‐related variables on long‐term HRQL among young adults with ACS.

Methods and Results

GENESIS‐PRAXY (GENdEr and Sex determInantS of cardiovascular disease: from bench to beyond‐Premature Acute Coronary SYndrome) is a multicenter, prospective cohort study (January 2009 to August 2013) of adults aged 18 to 55 years, hospitalized with ACS. HRQL was measured at baseline, 1, 6, and 12 months using the Short Form‐12 and Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ) among 1213 patients. Median age was 49 years. Women reported worse HRQL than men over time post‐ACS, both in terms of physical and mental functioning. Gender‐related factors were more likely to be predictors of HRQL than sex. Femininity score, social support, and housework responsibility were the most common gender‐related predictors of HRQL at 12 months. We observed an interaction between female sex and social support (β=0.44 [95% confidence interval, 0.01, 0.88]; P=0.047) for the physical limitation subscale of the SAQ.

Conclusions

Young women with ACS report significantly poorer HRQL than young men. Gender appears to be more important than sex in predicting long‐term HRQL post‐ACS. Specific gender‐related factors, such as social support, may be amenable to interventions and could improve the HRQL of patients with premature ACS.

Health-related quality of life in European women following myocardial infarction: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Coronary heart disease is a major contributor to women's health problems.

DESIGN

Self-perceived social support, well-being and health-related quality of life (HRQL) were documented in the cross-sectional HeartQoL survey of European women one and six months after a myocardial infarction.

METHODS

European women were recruited in 18 European countries and grouped into four geographical regions (Southern Europe, Northern Europe, Western Europe and Eastern Europe). Continuous socio-demographic variables and categorical variables were compared by age and region with ANOVA and χ(2), respectively; multiple regression models were used to identify predictors of social support, well-being and HRQL.

RESULTS

Women living in the Eastern European region rated social support, well-being and HRQL significantly lower than women in the other regions. Older women had lower physical HRQL scores than younger women. Eastern European women rated social support, well-being and HRQL significantly lower than women in the other regions. Prediction of the dependent variables (social support, well-being and HRQL) by socio-demographic factors varied by total group, in the older age group, and by region; body mass index and managerial responsibility were the most consistent significant predictors.

Predictors of physical and mental health-related quality of life outcomes among myocardial infarction patients

Background

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important outcome for patients diagnosed with coronary heart disease. This report describes predictors of physical and mental HRQoL at six months post-hospitalisation for myocardial infarction.

Methods

Participants were myocardial infarction patients (n=430) admitted to two tertiary referral centres in Brisbane, Australia who completed a six month coronary heart disease secondary prevention trial (ProActive Heart). Outcome variables were HRQoL (Short Form-36) at six months, including a physical and mental summary score. Baseline predictors included demographics and clinical variables, health behaviours, and psychosocial variables. Stepwise forward multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify significant independent predictors of six month HRQoL.

Results

Physical HRQoL was lower in participants who: were older (p<0.001); were unemployed (p=0.03); had lower baseline physical and mental HRQoL scores (p<0.001); had lower confidence levels in meeting sufficient physical activity recommendations (p<0.001); had no intention to be physically active in the next six months (p<0.001); and were more sedentary (p=0.001). Mental HRQoL was lower in participants who: were younger (p=0.01); had lower baseline mental HRQoL (p<0.001); were more sedentary (p=0.01) were depressed (p<0.001); and had lower social support (p=0.001).

Conclusions

This study has clinical implications as identification of indicators of lower physical and mental HRQoL outcomes for myocardial infarction patients allows for targeted counselling or coronary heart disease secondary prevention efforts.

Quality of life in cardiovascular patients in iran and factors affecting it: a systematic review

INTRODUCTION

Cardiovascular diseases are always one of the major causes of mortality in the world affecting all aspects of patients' lives. Therefore, this study was conducted to summarize and provide a clear view of quality of life in these patients in Iran through a systematic review on the results of previously conducted studies.

METHODS

In a systematic review, required information was collected by searching keywords of Iran, quality of life, heart failure, cardiac, heart, and their Persian equivalents in databases of Science Direct, Pubmed, IRAN doc, SID, Medlib and Magiran. The selected time period for searching articles was since 2000 to 2012. Inclusion criteria were: releasing of article during 2000 to 2012, articles reporting patients' quality of life in any domains of heart diseases, and articles published in Persian and English. Extracted results first were summarized in Extraction Table, and then analyzed manually.

RESULTS

Finally 18 of 1592 found articles were included in the study. A total of 3,797 cardiac patients' quality of life was measured using six different tools, the most important one of which was SF36 questionnaire. Among eight dimensions of SF36 questionnaire, the highest mean was for social role functioning with average score of 58.37 and the lowest for physical limitation (physical role functioning) with score of 42.95. Overall, mean of eight dimensions was 53.19. Among 4 general domains of quality of life, physical activity had the lowest average of 43.63 and average of general dimensions of quality of life was 47.65. The most important factors affecting quality of life were sex, age, education, marital status, occupational status, suffering duration, number of hospitalizations etc.

CONCLUSION

The results of the studies showed relatively low quality of life of cardiovascular patients in general. Therefore, according to the introduced effective factors in this study, it is necessary to consider regular programs for improving quality of life in these patients and providing suitable and qualitative services.

Why do older adult women fall short of the recommended follow-up care for coronary artery disease?

BACKGROUND

Many women with coronary artery disease (CAD), commonly referred to as coronary heart disease, do not receive an annual office visit to manage their disease. We set out to determine what barriers factor into women not receiving an office visit to manage their disease.

METHODS

A purposive sample of 26 eligible women (≥65 years of age) diagnosed with CAD completed in-depth, qualitative interviews. Systematic analysis of the content of interviews was performed on transcripts from these interviews. Participants with an AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan insured by UnitedHealthcare insurance company that did not receive an annual office visit were eligible. In addition, we surveyed 100 physicians to obtain their thoughts about why women may not schedule at least one annual visit to manage their CAD.

RESULTS

The most common barriers identified were skepticism of heart problems, having to take the initiative to schedule the appointment, and dealing with seemingly more pressing health problems. Many of these barriers identified were substantiated in a survey of physicians that treat women with CAD, but the relative rankings of the importance of these problems differed somewhat.

CONCLUSIONS

Many women were skeptical about their heart health and often lacked the initiative to schedule a follow-up appointment. Most agreed that they would make an appointment if contacted by their doctor's office. Many of these women were receptive to the idea of receiving educational information by mail. Active involvement by doctors' offices to schedule appointments may help improve care, as might mail-based reminders.

Sense of coherence as an independent predictor of health-related quality of life among coronary heart disease patients

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to determine whether sense of coherence (SOC) at baseline predicts health-related quality of life (HRQoL) at 12-28-month follow-up among patients with coronary heart disease when controlled for sociodemographic and medical variables.

METHODS

A total of 179 consecutive patients (58.28 ± 6.52 years, 16.8% women) scheduled for coronary angiography (CAG) were interviewed before CAG and 12-28 months after. SOC was measured with the 13-item Orientation to Life Questionnaire. HRQoL was measured using the Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36), from which the mental and physical component summaries (MCS, PCS) were calculated. The relationship between SOC and HRQoL was examined using regression analyses.

RESULTS

SOC proved to be a significant predictor of the MCS-score (B = 0.29; 95% CI = 0.17-0.41) and PCS-score (B = 0.18; 95% CI = 0.06-0.31) when not adjusted for possible confounding sociodemographic and medical variables. After adjustment for sociodemographic and medical variables, SOC remained a predictor of the MCS-score (B = 0.26; 95% CI = 0.14-0.39). SOC also remained a predictor of the PCS-score when controlled for gender, age and family income; however, the association disappeared after adjustment for functional status (B = 0.07; 95% CI = -0.05 to 0.19).

CONCLUSIONS

SOC is a predictor of mental and physical HRQoL at 12-28-month follow-up, crude and also after adjustment. Patients undergoing CAG with low SOC thus deserve particular attention in regard to the maintenance and improvement of their HRQoL.

The effects of interpersonal counselling on health-related quality of life after myocardial infarction

AIM

To evaluate the effects of interpersonal counselling on health-related quality of life after myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND

Depression is a risk factor for poor health-related quality of life after myocardial infarction. Interpersonal counselling seems to reduce depressive symptoms and distress after myocardial infarction.

METHODS

Myocardial infarction patients (n=103) were randomised into an intervention group (n=51) with 1-6 (mean 4·6) interpersonal counselling-sessions focusing on managing depressive symptoms and a control group (n=52). Health-related quality of life after myocardial infarction was measured with EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D) in hospital, at six and 18 months after discharge.

RESULTS

No differences in the changes of health-related quality of life were found between the groups during follow-up. However, health-related quality of life improved significantly in the intervention group. In the group of patients under 60 years, the effect of interpersonal counselling was significant in the intervention group compared with the control group.

CONCLUSIONS

Interpersonal counselling does not seem to improve health-related quality of life better than standard care after myocardial infarction in general, but it does seem to be beneficial with younger myocardial infarction patients.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

There is a need to study the effects of interpersonal counselling further with younger myocardial infarction patients and to develop the intervention further, before using it systematically as part of nursing practice.

Gender differences and determinants of health related quality of life in coronary patients: a follow-up study

Background

The role of gender differences in Health Related Quality Life (HRQL) in coronary patients is controversial, so understanding the specific determinants of HRQL in men and women might be of clinical importance. The aim of this study was to know the gender differences in the evolution of HRQL at 3 and 6 months after a coronary event, and to identify the key clinical, demographic and psychological characteristics of each gender associated with these changes.

Methods

A follow-up study was carried out, and 175 patients (112 men and 63 women) with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or unstable angina were studied. The SF-36v1 health questionnaire was used to assess HRQL, and the GHQ-28 (General Health Questionnaire) to measure mental health during follow-up. To study the variables related to changes in HRQL, generalized estimating equation (GEE) models were performed.

Results

Follow-up data were available for 55 men and 25 women at 3 months, and for 35 men and 12 women at 6 months. Observations included: a) Revascularization was performed later in women. b) The frequency of rehospitalization between months 3 and 6 of follow-up was higher in women c) Women had lower baseline scores in the SF-36. d) Men had progressed favourably in most of the physical dimensions of the SF-36 at 6 months, while at the same time women's scores had only improved for Physical Component Summary, Role Physical and Social Functioning; e) the variables determining the decrease in HRQL in men were: worse mental health and angina frequency; and in women: worse mental health, history of the disease, revascularization, and angina frequency.

Conclusions

There are differences in the evolution of HRQL, between men and women after a coronary attack. Mental health is the determinant most frequently associated with HRQL in both genders. However, other clinical determinants of HRQL differed with gender, emphasizing the importance of individualizing the intervention and the content of rehabilitation programs. Likewise, the recognition and treatment of mental disorders in these patients could be crucial.

Quality of life in cirrhosis is related to potentially treatable factors

OBJECTIVE

Improvement of prognosis and availability of diverse therapeutic options for complications of advanced liver disease highlight the importance of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to identify factors that influence HRQOL and may be potentially treatable in patients with cirrhosis.

METHODS

HRQOL was measured in 212 outpatients with cirrhosis using a generic questionnaire (Medical Outcomes Study Form, SF-36) and a liver-specific questionnaire (Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire, CLDQ). All patients underwent a systematic clinical and neuropsychological assessment. Independent factors associated with poor HRQOL were identified by multiple linear regression.

RESULTS

HRQOL scores exhibited by patients were: global CLDQ: 4.8+/-1.2; Physical Component Score of SF-36: 38.5+/-10.7; Mental Component Score of SF-36: 45.3+/-14.3. The independent variables for global CLDQ were female sex, nonalcoholic etiology, current ascites, and a decrease in albumin (R = 0.22). For Physical Component Score of SF-36, the independent variables were prior hepatic encephalopathy, current ascites, and a decrease in hemoglobin (R = 0.22). For Mental Component Score of SF-36, the independent variables were nonalcoholic etiology, the Grooved Pegboard test, and a decrease in hemoglobin (R = 0.14).

CONCLUSION

Several clinical variables, potentially treatable, may alter particular aspects of HRQOL. Correction of ascites, hypoalbuminemia, minimal hepatic encephalopathy, and anemia may cause a positive impact on HRQOL of patients with cirrhosis.

Sense of coherence--a determinant of quality of life over time in older female acute myocardial infarction survivors

AIMS

To determine the relationships between different sense of coherence levels and quality of life, and in older female myocardial infarction survivors; to investigate how socio-demographic, clinical characteristics, sense of coherence self-reported symptoms and function affect quality of life; and to determine whether sense of coherence and quality of life are stable during a six-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND

Myocardial infraction confers new physical and mental challenges. However, research on sense of coherence and other factors involved in maintaining physical, psychosocial and environmental aspects of quality of life in older female myocardial infraction survivors is scant.

DESIGN

Survey.

METHODS

A postal survey was conducted of 145 women, aged 62-80 years, three months to five years after myocardial infarction (T1), with a follow-up after six months (T2). Self-reported socio-demographic and clinical data and hospital medical records data were collected. The sense of coherence scale (SOC-29) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument Abbreviated (WHOQOL-BREF) were used.

RESULTS

We found a significant difference in quality of life between weak, moderate, and strong sense of coherence groups (p<0.001). Sense of coherence contributed to the level of all quality of life domains (p<0.001). Several clinical characteristics contributed to quality of life: (1) physical domain: comorbidities (p<0.001), previous myocardial infarction (p = 0.013), ejection fraction (p<0.011), length of hospital stay (p = 0.005) symptoms and function (p<0.001); (2) psychological domain: previous myocardial infarction (p = 0.031) and symptoms and function (p<0.001); and (3) environmental domain: education (p = 0.033) and symptoms and function (p = 0.003). On group level, both sense of coherence and quality of life were stable. Experiencing specific health changes (p<0.001), not major life events, influenced quality of life during the six-month follow-up.

CONCLUSION

Sense of coherence was an important stable determinant of quality of life domains in female myocardial infarction survivors. Although other factors were identified, further research is needed to elucidate additional determinants of quality of life.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

These specific factors could guide clinicians in making treatment decisions that optimize the quality of life of their patients. Applying a salutogenic perspective through patient education may be important.
