Comparison of selected physico-chemical properties of calcium alginate films prepared by two different methods

Impact of heterogeneously crosslinked calcium alginate networks on the encapsulation of β-carotene-loaded beads

This study investigated the impact of heterogeneity of crosslinking on a range of physical and mechanical properties of calcium alginate networks formed via external gelation with 0.25-2% sodium alginate and 2.5 and 5% CaCl₂. Crosslinking in films with 1-2% alginate was highly heterogeneous, as indicated by their lower calcium content (35-7 mg Ca·g alginate^-1) and apparent solubility (5-6%). Overall, films with 1-2% alginate showed higher resistance (tensile strength = 51-147 MPa) but lower elasticity (Elastic Modulus = 2136-10,079 MPa) than other samples more homogeneous in nature (0.5% alginate, Elastic Modulus = 1918 MPa). Beads with 0.5% alginate prevented the degradation of β-carotene 1.5 times more efficiently than 1% beads (5% CaCl₂) at any of the storage temperatures studied. Therefore, it was postulated that calcium alginate networks crosslinked to a greater extent and in a more homogeneous manner showed better mechanical performance and barrier properties for encapsulation applications.

Morphology and Thermal Properties of Calcium Alginate/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composites

Calcium alginate (CaAlg) is a kind of biodegradable and eco-friendly functional material, and CaAlg/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites are expected to be applied as new textile, heat-generating, and flame-retardant materials. In this paper, the CaAlg/rGO composites were prepared by a sol-gel method and their morphological and thermal properties were studied. The results showed that the introduction of rGO can efficiently improve the thermal stability of CaAlg. Further study showed that rGO increased the carbon formation rate by 4.1%, indicating that the thermal stability was improved by the promotion of carbon formation. Moreover, the weight loss rate of the composites was faster at 180⁻200 °C than that of CaAlg, after which the rate was less comparatively, suggesting the better thermal stability of the composite. This maybe because the high heat transfer efficiency of rGO allowed the material to reach the temperature of the thermal decomposition of the glycan molecule chain within a short time, and then promoted carbon formation. The thermal cracking mechanism of the composites is proposed based on the experimental data.

A Hydrogel-Film Casting to Fabricate Platelet-Reinforced Polymer Composite Films Exhibiting Superior Mechanical Properties

The fabrication of mechanically superior polymer composite films with controllable shapes on various scales is difficult. Despite recent research on polymer composites consisting of organic matrices and inorganic materials with layered structures, these films suffer from complex preparations and limited mechanical properties that do not have even integration of high strength, stiffness, and toughness. Herein, a hydrogel-film casting approach to achieve fabrication of simultaneously strong, stiff, and tough polymer composite films with well-defined microstructure, inspired from a layer-by-layer structure of nacre is reported. Ca²⁺ -crosslinked alginate hydrogels incorporated with platelet-like alumina particles are dried to form composite films composed of horizontally aligned alumina platelets and alginate matrix with uniformly layered microstructure. Alumina platelets are evenly distributed parallel without precipitations and contribute to synergistic enhancements of strength, stiffness and toughness in the resultant film. Consequentially, Ca²⁺ -crosslinked alginate/alumina (Ca²⁺ -Alg/Alu) films show exceptional tensile strength (267 MPa), modulus (17.9 GPa), and toughness (3.60 MJ m^-3 ). Furthermore, the hydrogel-film casting allows facile preparation of polymer composite films with controllable shapes and various scales. The results suggest an alternative approach to design and prepare polymer composites with the layer-by-layer structure for superior mechanical properties.
