Monitoring lipids profile, CO2 fixation, and water recyclability for the economic viability of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris cultivation at different initial nitrogen

Reaction of Pyrrolobenzothiazines with Schiff Bases and Carbodiimides: Approach to Angular 6/5/5/5-Tetracyclic Spiroheterocycles

1H-Pyrrole-2,3-diones, fused at [e]-side with a heterocycle, are suitable platforms for the synthesis of various angular polycyclic alkaloid-like spiroheterocycles. Recently discovered sulfur-containing [e]-fused 1H-pyrrole-2,3-diones (aroylpyrrolobenzothiazinetriones) tend to exhibit unusual reactivity. Based on these peculiar representatives of [e]-fused 1H-pyrrole-2,3-diones, we have developed an approach to an unprecedented 6/5/5/5-tetracyclic alkaloid-like spiroheterocyclic system of benzo[d]pyrrolo[3',4':2,3]pyrrolo[2,1-b]thiazole via their reaction with Schiff bases and carbodiimides. The experimental results have been supplemented with DFT computational studies. The synthesized alkaloid-like 6/5/5/5-tetracyclic compounds have been tested for their biotechnological potential as growth stimulants in the green algae Chlorella vulgaris.

Biocompounds from wastewater-grown microalgae: a review of emerging cultivation and harvesting technologies

Microalgae biomass has attracted attention as a feedstock to produce biofuels, biofertilizers, and pigments. However, the high production cost associated with cultivation and separation stages is a challenge for the microalgae biotechnology application on a large scale. A promising approach to overcome the technical-economic limitations of microalgae production is using wastewater as a nutrient and water source for cultivation. This strategy reduces cultivation costs and contributes to valorizing sanitation resources. Therefore, this article presents a comprehensive literature review on the status of microalgae biomass cultivation in wastewater, focusing on production strategies and the accumulation of valuable compounds such as lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, fatty acids, and pigments. This review also covers emerging techniques for harvesting microalgae biomass cultivated in wastewater, discussing the advantages and limitations of the process, as well as pointing out the main research opportunities. The novelty of the study lies in providing a detailed analysis of state-of-the-art and potential advances in the cultivation and harvesting of microalgae, with a special focus on the use of wastewater and implementing innovative strategies to enhance productivity and the accumulation of compounds. In this context, the work aims to guide future research concerning emerging technologies in the field, emphasizing the importance of innovative approaches in cultivating and harvesting microalgae for advancing knowledge and practical applications in this area.

Exploring microalgal nutrient-light synergy to enhance CO2 utilization and lipid productivity in sustainable long-term water recycling cultivation

In this work the effects of nutrient availability and light conditions on CO2 utilization and lipid production in Micractinium pusillum KMC8 is reported. The study investigated the ideal nitrogen concentrations for growth and nitrogen utilization in a 15% CO2 environment. Logistic and Gompertz models were employed to analyze the kinetics of KMC8 cell growth. Compared to 17.6 mmol L-1 control nitrogen, which generated 1.6 g L-1 growth, doubling and quadrupling nitrogen concentrations boosted biomass growth by 12.5% and 28.78%. At 8.6 mmol L-1 nitrogen, the growth decreased but lipid productivity increased to 18.62 mg L-1 day-1. At 70.6 mmol L-1 nitrogen, elevated nitrogen levels maintained an alkaline pH above 7 and enhanced CO2 mitigation, achieving 2.27% CO2 utilization efficiency. Nitrogen shows a positive correlation with higher rates of carbon and nitrogen fixation. The investigation extends to find out the influence of phosphorus and light conditions on microalgae. Increasing light intensity incrementally from 150 to 1200 μmol m-2 s-1 with more phosphorus increased biomass productivity by 85% (255 mg L-1 day-1) and lipid productivity by 2.5-fold (84.76 mg L-1 day-1), with 3.3% CO2 utilization efficiency compared to directly using 1200 μmol m-2 s-1. This study suggests a water recycling-fed batch cycle with gradual light feeding, which results in high CO2 fixation (1.1 g L-1 day-1), 7% CO2 utilization, and significant biomass and lipid productivity (577.23 and 150 mg L-1 day-1). This approach promotes lipid synthesis, maintains carbon fixation, and minimizes biomass loss, thus supporting sustainable bioenergy development in a circular bio-economy framework.

Mixotrophy, a more promising culture mode: Multi-faceted elaboration of carbon and energy metabolism mechanisms to optimize microalgae culture

Some mixotrophic microalgae appear to exceed the sum of photoautotrophy and heterotrophy in terms of biomass production. This paper mainly reviews the carbon and energy metabolism of microalgae to reveal the synergistic mechanisms of the mixotrophic mode from multiple aspects. It explains the shortcomings of photoautotrophic and heterotrophic growth, highlighting that the mixotrophic mode is not simply the sum of photoautotrophy and heterotrophy. Specifically, microalgae in mixotrophic mode can be divided into separate parts of photoautotrophic and heterotrophic cultures, and the synergistic parts of photoautotrophic culture enhance aerobic respiration and heterotrophic culture enhance the Calvin cycle. Additionally, this review argues that current deficiencies in mixotrophic culture can be improved by uncovering the synergistic mechanism of the mixotrophic mode, aiming to increase biomass growth and improve quality. This approach will enable the full utilization of advantagesin various fields, and provide research directions for future microalgal culture.

The growth and lipid accumulation of Scenedesmus quadricauda under nitrogen starvation stress during xylose mixotrophic/heterotrophic cultivation

In order to conquer the block of high cost and low yields which limit to realize the commercialization of microalgal biodiesel, the mixotrophic and heterotrophic cultivation of Scenedesmus quadricauda FACHB-1297 fed on xylose was separately studied employing six forms of media: phosphorus sufficient, phosphorus restricted, and phosphorus starvation were combined with nitrogen sufficient and nitrogen starvation conditions. The maximum lipid content (about 41% of dry weight) was obtained on the 5th day (heterotrophic cultivation) and 8th day (mixotrophic cultivation) under the nitrogen starved and phosphorus sufficient (N0&P) conditions, which was about twofold in comparison to the final lipid content on the sufficient nitrogen condition (control). Under mixotrophic and heterotrophic modes, the highest lipid production was achieved in the N0&P trial, with the value of 274.96 mg/L and 193.77 mg/L, respectively. Xylose utilization rate of 30-96% under heterotrophic modes was apparently higher than that of 20-50% in mixotrophic modes. In contrast, phosphorus uptake rate of 100% under mixotrophic cultivation was significantly more than that of 60-90% in heterotrophic cultivation. Furthermore, under the condition of heterotrophic cultivation using xylose as a carbon source, the phosphorus had a positive impact on microalgae cell synthesis and the lipid content enhanced with the augmentation in phosphorus concentrations. We suggested that sufficient phosphorus should be supplied for obtaining higher microalgal lipid production in the lack of nitrogen under xylose heterotrophic/mixotrophic condition. This was a highly effective way to obtain efficient microalgae lipid production.

Exploring the Potential of Heterosis to Improve Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Popcorn Plants

Nitrogen is crucial for plant growth and development, and improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is a viable strategy for reducing dependence on nitrogen inputs and promoting sustainability. While the benefits of heterosis in corn are well known, the physiological mechanisms underlying this phenomenon in popcorn are less understood. We aimed to investigate the effects of heterosis on growth and physiological traits in four popcorn lines and their hybrids under two contrasting nitrogen conditions. We evaluated morpho-agronomic and physiological traits such as leaf pigments, the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII, and leaf gas exchange. Components associated with NUE were also evaluated. N deprivation caused reductions of up to 65% in terms of plant architecture, 37% in terms of leaf pigments, and 42% in terms of photosynthesis-related traits. Heterosis had significant effects on growth traits, NUE, and foliar pigments, particularly under low soil nitrogen conditions. N-utilization efficiency was found to be the mechanism favoring superior hybrid performance for NUE. Non-additive genetic effects were predominant in controlling the studied traits, indicating that exploring heterosis is the most effective strategy for obtaining superior hybrids to promote NUE. The findings are relevant and beneficial for agro farmers seeking sustainable agricultural practices and improved crop productivity through the optimization of nitrogen utilization.

Biotechnological Approaches for Biomass and Lipid Production Using Microalgae Chlorella and Its Future Perspectives

Heavy reliance on fossil fuels has been associated with increased climate disasters. As an alternative, microalgae have been proposed as an effective agent for biomass production. Several advantages of microalgae include faster growth, usage of non-arable land, recovery of nutrients from wastewater, efficient CO₂ capture, and high amount of biomolecules that are valuable for humans. Microalgae Chlorella spp. are a large group of eukaryotic, photosynthetic, unicellular microorganisms with high adaptability to environmental variations. Over the past decades, Chlorella has been used for the large-scale production of biomass. In addition, Chlorella has been actively used in various food industries for improving human health because of its antioxidant, antidiabetic, and immunomodulatory functions. However, the major restrictions in microalgal biofuel technology are the cost-consuming cultivation, processing, and lipid extraction processes. Therefore, various trials have been performed to enhance the biomass productivity and the lipid contents of Chlorella cells. This study provides a comprehensive review of lipid enhancement strategies mainly published in the last five years and aimed at regulating carbon sources, nutrients, stresses, and expression of exogenous genes to improve biomass production and lipid synthesis.

Assessment of CO2 biofixation and bioenergy potential of microalga Gonium pectorale through its biomass pyrolysis, and elucidation of pyrolysis reaction via kinetics modeling and artificial neural network

This study investigates CO2 biofixation and pyrolytic kinetics of microalga G. pectorale using model-fitting and model-free methods. Microalga was grown in two different media. The highest rate of CO2 fixation (0.130 g/L/day) was observed at a CO2 concentration of 2%. The pyrokinetics of the biomass was performed by a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) curves at 5, 10 and 20°C/min indicated the presence of multiple peaks in the active pyrolysis zones. The activation energy was calculated by different model-free methods such as Friedman, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO), Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), and Popescu. The obtained activation energy which are 61.7–287 kJ/mol using Friedman, 40.6–262 kJ/mol using FWO, 35–262 kJ/mol using KAS, and 66.4–255 kJ/mol using Popescu showed good agreement with the experimental values with higher than 0.96 determination coefficient (R2). Moreover, it was found that the most probable reaction mechanism for G. pectorale pyrolysis was a third-order function. Furthermore, the multilayer perceptron-based artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) regression model of the 4-10-1 architecture demonstrated excellent agreement with the experimental values of the thermal decomposition of the G. pectoral. Therefore, the study suggests that the MLP-ANN regression model could be utilized to predict thermogravimetric parameters.

Effective recovery of microalgal biomass using various types of emulsion polymers

Microalgae biomass has been considered as one of the potential feedstocks in biofuel production. Yet, biomass harvesting poses a challenge to the overall production cost due to its low cell density. Flocculation has been marked as one of the promising processes in microalgae harvesting technology. In this study, the first screening of two anionic (A-230, and A-330E) and five cationic polymers (C-810E, C-810EL, C-810EB, C-810ELH, and C-810EMB) followed by gravity settling with the mixed microalgae concentration of 2.24 g_TSS/L revealed that anionic polymers are less effective. Whereas all cationic polymers achieved above 90% harvesting efficiency. Therefore, the maximum mass recovery of 98.7% with 86.8 g_TSS/L sediment content was achieved by adjusting pH to 6-0.6 mL/L (115.178 mg/g_biomass) of C-810E followed by 15-min settling. The cationic polymer addition followed by settling would enable cost-effective downstream processing of microalgal biomass.
