A study on the efficient separation of oily water using mullite whiskers membrane through combined filtration and electrofiltration

This study explores the efficacy of a ceramic membrane combining filtration, electrofiltration, and backwashing for oily water treatment. A secondary mullite membrane was synthesized, showcasing high permeate flux (534 LMH), biaxial flexural strength (75.21 MPa), and cost-effectiveness. Operational parameters, set at 2 bar pressure and 0.727 m s-1 cross-flow velocity, were optimized for desirable permeate flux and oil removal rates. Critical electric field intensity (E crit) ranged from 50 to 55 V, guiding optimal voltage selection for electrofiltration. Electrokinetic phenomena, such as electrophoresis and electroosmosis, addressed fouling issues. Higher salt concentrations exacerbated fouling and reduced electric field efficiency. Energy analysis revealed potential savings, dropping from 3.88 kW h m3 without voltage to 2.71 kW h m3 at 65 V for salt-free solutions. However, higher salt concentrations increased fouling, elevating energy consumption. These findings affirm the value of affordable ceramic membranes for oily water treatment, stressing the need for parameter optimization to enhance performance and energy efficiency.

Membrane processes enhanced by various forms of physical energy: A systematic review on mechanisms, implementation, application and energy efficiency

Membrane technologies in water and wastewater treatment have been eagerly pursued over the past decades, yet membrane fouling remains the major bottleneck to overcome. Membrane fouling control methods which couple membrane processes with online in situ application of external physical energy input (EPEI) are getting closer and closer to reality, thanks to recent advances in novel materials and energy deliverance methods. In this review, we summarized recent studies on membrane fouling control techniques that depend on (i) electric field, (ii) acoustic field, (iii) magnetic field, and (iv) photo-irradiation (mostly ultraviolet or visible light). Mechanisms of each energy input were first reported, which defines the applicability of these methods to certain wastewater matrices. Then, means of implementation were discussed to evaluate the compatibility of these fouling control methods with established membrane techniques. After that, preferred applications of each energy input to different foulant types and membrane processes in the experiment reports were summarized, along with a discussion on the trends and knowledge gaps of such fouling control research. Next, specific energy consumption in membrane fouling control and flux enhancement was estimated and compared, based on the experimental results reported in the literature. Lastly, strength and weakness of these methods and future perspectives were presented as open questions.

Electrical-based ultrafiltration processes enhanced by in-situ generation of Fe(III): Significance of permanganate oxidation

In this study, a permanganate-assisted electrocoagulation-ultrafiltration (PEC-UF) process was proposed to control membrane fouling in the treatment of secondary effluent. Four comparable systems, i.e., UF, electro-UF (E-UF), electrocoagulation-UF (EC-UF), and PEC-UF, were investigated to systematically clarify the role of permanganate and electrocoagulation in mitigating membrane fouling. Results revealed that the formation of a dense cake layer containing concentrated solutes was the primary reason for membrane fouling. Electrocoagulation significantly mitigated membrane fouling and resulted in the reduction of the normalized transmembrane pressure of the EC-UF and PEC-UF systems by 35.0% and 44.6% compared with the UF control system, respectively. However, the retention of a considerable amount of iron oxyhydroxide precipitates on the membrane surface aggravated inorganic fouling in the in-situ EC-UF system. Furthermore, the enhanced formation of Fe(III) by oxidation of Fe(II) with permanganate promoted the coagulation process. Hence, increased generation of Fe(III) and enhanced coagulation promoted by formed MnO_x accelerated the formation of a hydrophilic cake layer with high porosity and thereby reduced the occurrence of both organic and inorganic membrane fouling. These results demonstrated the potential application of permanganate-assisted in-situ electrical-based methods to control UF membrane fouling during advanced wastewater treatment.

Metal organic framework UiO-66 incorporated ultrafiltration membranes for simultaneous natural organic matter and heavy metal ions removal

In this work, a new type of UiO-66 incorporated polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes was fabricated to enhance antifouling properties and heavy metal ions removal efficiency. The UF membranes incorporating different loadings of the UiO-66 filler were prepared via the classical phase inversion process. These membranes unveiled enhanced hydrophilicity, porosity, water uptake, zeta potential, mechanical strength, permeability, and HA removal ratios due to the incorporation of hydrophilic UiO-66 fillers. Particularly, HA rejection ratios were observed to be approximately 93% for all the modified membranes, which was attributed to electrostatic repulsion interactions between the hydrophilic groups of HA and UiO-66. Moreover, the antifouling abilities of the modified membranes were evaluated and found to be much better with a high flux recovery ratio (FRR) of about 88% when compared to the blank PSf membrane (only around 34%). Moreover, the UiO-66 incorporated membranes were highly-effective in the removal of contaminants like heavy metal ions (Sr²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Cr⁶⁺) and HA at the same time. Overall, the PSf UF membranes incorporating UiO-66 opened up a new avenue to enhance the membrane hydrophilicity, permeability, antifouling properties as well as heavy metal ions removal abilities.

Enhancement of membrane fouling mitigation and trace organic compounds removal by electric field in a microfiltration reactor treating secondary effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant

Applying an electric field in the membrane filtration was an effective method to alleviate membrane fouling and enhance the trace organic compounds (TrOCs) removal. The secondary effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant was used as feed water to evaluate the performance of the electric field coupled microfiltration system. Applying a 1.25 V voltage reduced 22.9% membrane fouling by electrophoretic force, and the membrane fouling was alleviated by 70.8% at 3 V by electrochemical oxidation and electric field force. At 3 V, active chlorine and hydroperoxide generated on the electrodes and the acidic environment formed around the anode significantly inhibited the growth of microorganisms and their attachment on the membrane surface, and thus reduced the membrane fouling formed by microorganisms. Electrochemical oxidation also removed the protein in wastewater and changed the main organic components of membrane fouling from microorganisms, protein, and polysaccharide to humic substances and polysaccharide. Furthermore, the electrophoretic force and acidic environment reduced the electrostatic repulsion of humic substances and made them tend to aggregate and form hydrophilic porous fouling structures, which obviously lowered filtration resistance and showed significant membrane fouling mitigation. Also, the electric field effectively enhanced the removal of target TrOCs through electrochemical oxidation and electric field force improving the elimination of TrOCs from 8.5% ~ 26.1% at 0 V to 35.9% ~ 84.8% at 3 V.

A Critical Review on Electric Field-Assisted Membrane Processes: Implications for Fouling Control, Water Recovery, and Future Prospects

Electrofiltration, an electric field-assisted membrane process, has been a research topic of growing popularity due to its ability to improve membrane performance by providing in situ antifouling conditions in a membrane system. The number of reports on electrofiltration have increased exponentially over the past two decades. These reports explored many innovations, such as novel configurations of an electric field, engineered membrane materials, and interesting designs of foulant compositions and membrane modules. Recent electrofiltration literature focused mainly on compiling results without a comprehensive comparative analysis across different works. The main objective of this critical review is to, first, organize, compare and contrast the results across various electrofiltration studies; second, discuss various types of mechanisms that could be incorporated into electrofiltration and their effect on membrane system performance; third, characterize electrofiltration phenomenon; fourth, interpret the effects of various operational conditions on the performance of electrofiltration; fifth, evaluate the state-of-the-art knowledge associated with modeling efforts in electrofiltration; sixth, discuss the energy costs related to the implementation of electrofiltration; and finally, identify the current knowledge gaps that hinder the transition of the lab-scale observations to industry-scale electrofiltration as well as the future prospects of electrofiltration.

Dynamic regulation of Al-based floc cake layers by spiral rotation during ultrafiltration in drinking water treatment

Integrated ultrafiltration (UF) membrane-based processes are promising drinking water treatment technologies. However, the membrane module always remains static, resulting in membrane fouling through the gradual formation of a thick cake layer. As floc-based cake layers are loose, in the present study, a membrane module spiral rotation was introduced with the aim of regulating the cake layers. The cake layer thickness readily decreased and the UF membrane fouling was alleviated. The results showed that Al-based flocs were not easily removed from the membrane surface during rotation due to its low density; as a result, the likelihood of humic acid (HA) reaching the membrane surface was low. Computational fluid dynamics indicated that a strong shearing force was generated with high rotation height. Thus, the cake layer thickness was easily regulated, and the UF membrane fouling was further alleviated. However, the floc-based cake layer could be broken by strong shearing forces, thereby allowing HA molecules to directly reach the membrane surface and further aggravating membrane fouling. In comparison to alkaline condition, the UF membrane performed better under acidic conditions, particularly in terms of HA removal, due to the smaller floc size and higher positive charge. Additionally, excellent UF membrane performance was also observed when treating raw water, indicating the potential application.
