Controllable synthesis of spherical carbon particles transition from dense to hollow structure derived from Kraft lignin

Targeted improvement of narrow micropores in porous carbon for enhancing trace benzene vapor removal: Revealing the adsorption mechanism via experimental and molecular simulation

Porous carbon materials are highly desirable for removing benzene due to their low energy for capture and regeneration. Research has demonstrated that narrow microporous volume is crucial for effective adsorption of benzene at ultra-low concentration. Unfortunately, achieving directional increase in the narrow microporous volume in porous carbon remains a challenge. Here, nitrogen-doped hydrothermal carbon was prepared using urea-assisted hydrothermal method, and then porous carbon (PUC800) was prepared by KOH activation. The resulting material had 180 % higher pore volume and 179 % higher surface area compared to non-nitrogen activation methods. Then, using mechanochemical (mechanical compaction and KOH activation) approach to produce PUC800-3T, which had a 30 % increase in pore volume and a 33 % increase in surface area compared to PUC800. PUC800-3T showed benzene adsorption capacity of 4.2 mmol g-1 at 1 Pa and 5.8 mmol g-1 at 5 Pa. Experimental and molecular simulation indicate that the benzene adsorption at 1 and 5 Pa is determined by pore volume of less than 0.8 and 0.9 nm, respectively. Density functional theory calculations provided insight into the CH⋯X (X = N/O) interactions drive benzene adsorption on the carbon framework. This work provides valuable theoretical and experimental support for designing, preparing, and applying adsorbents for trace removal of benzene vapor.

Manganese-enriched prussian blue nanohybrids with smaller electrode potential and lower charge transfer resistance to enhance combination therapy

Prussian blue (PB) is authenticated in clinical treatment, while it generally exhibits unfavorable chemodynamic therapy (CDT) performance. Herein, we developed manganese-doped prussian blue (PBM) nanoparticles to significantly enhance both CDT and photothermal therapy (PTT) effect. The lower redox potential of Mn3+/2+ (0.088 V) in PBM against that of Fe2+/3+ (0.192 V) in PB leads to favorable electron transfer of PBM with respect to PB. Besides, PBM has a lower charge-transfer resistance (Rct) of 2.98 Ω than 4.83 Ω of PB. Once PBM entering the tumor microenvironment (TME), Mn3+ may be readily reduced by glutathione (GSH) and therein to enhance intracellular oxidative stress. Meanwhile, the superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of PBM facilitates the conversion of endogenous superoxide (O2•-) into H2O2. Mn2+ subsequently catalyzes H2O2 to generate toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Notably, the PBM plus laser irradiation can effectively trigger a robust immunogenic cell death (ICD) due to the combination therapy of CDT and PTT. Additionally, the mice treated by PBM followed by laser irradiation efficiently avoided splenomegaly and lung metastasis, along with significant up-regulation of the Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING) expression. Overall, PBM significantly inhibits tumor growth and metastasis, making it a promising multifunctional nanoplatform for cancer treatment.

The synergistic effect of phototherapy and active substances on hair growth

Androgenic alopecia (AGA) typically manifests post-puberty, resulting in decreases in hair density, disruptions in the hair growth cycle, and alterations in hair follicle micro structure. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a key hormone implicated in hair loss, especially on male. In this study, we found that each of arginine (Arg), arterial extract (AE) or biotin tripeptide-1 (BT-1), when combined with low level light therapy (LLLT, at 630 nm, 2 J/cm2), showed the efficacy in enhancing mitochondrial functions, cell proliferation and collagen synthesis in fibroblasts. Additionally, CARRIPOWER (the complexes of AE, BT-1, Arg, and Diaminopyrimidine derivatives), in conjunction with LLLT (630 nm, 2 J/cm2), showed promising results in dermal papilla cells (DPCs). The promising results contained not also inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-6) and cell pro apoptotic factor (TGF-β2) reduction, but also Wnt pathway inhibition by decreasing DKK1 level, and pro-hair growth factors (vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and β-catenin) increase. This innovative combination therapy offers a potential solution for the treatment of AGA, addressing both hormonal and cellular factors involved in hair loss.

Corrosion suppression and strengthening of the Al-10Zn alloy by adding silica nanorods

Aluminum alloys have been widely studied because of their current engineering applications. Due to their high strength and lightweight, cracking can easily initiate on their surface, deteriorating their overall functional and structural properties and causing environmental attacks. The current study highlights the significant influence of incorporating 1 wt% silica nanostructure in aluminum-10 zinc alloys. The characteristics of the composites were examined using Vickers hardness, tensile, and electrochemical testing (OCP, Tafel, and EIS) at various artificial aging temperatures (423, 443, and 463 K). Silica nanorods may achieve ultrafine grains, increase hardness by up to 13.8%, increase σUTS values by up to 79% at 443 K, and improve corrosion rate by up to 89.4%, surpassing Al-10 Zn bulk metallics. We demonstrate that silica nanorods contribute to the creation of a superior nanocomposite that not only limits failure events under loading but also resists corrosion. Our findings suggest that silica nanocomposite can produce unique features for use in a variety of automotive, construction, and aerospace applications. This improvement can be attributed mainly to the large surface area of nano-silica particles, which alters the Al matrix. Microstructural, mechanical, and electrochemical studies revealed that the effects of structure refinement were dependent on nano-silica.

Nanostructuring silica-iron core-shell particles in a one-step aerosol process

Silica-coated iron (Fe@SiO2) particles have attracted considerable interest as a potential powder core material due to their distinctive advantages, including higher magnetic saturation and enhanced electrical resistance. In this study, the submicron-sized core-shell Fe@SiO2 particles were successfully synthesized in a single step via an aerosol process using a spray pyrolysis method assisted by a swirler connector for the first time. Changing the reducing agent concentration (supplied H2) and tuning the number of core (Fe) particles were investigated to achieve the desired Fe@SiO2 particles. The results indicated that an excessive number of cores led to the appearance of FeO crystals due to insufficient reduction. Conversely, an insufficient number of cores resulted in a thicker SiO2 shell, which hindered the penetration of the supplied H2 gas. Furthermore, the produced Fe@SiO2 particles exhibited soft-ferromagnetic characteristics with an excellent magnetic saturation value of 2.04 T, which is close to the standard theoretical value of 2.15 T. This work contributes new insights into the production of core-shell Fe@SiO2 particles, expanding their applicability to advanced soft-magnetic materials.

Controlling the Magnetic Responsiveness of Cellulose Nanofiber Particles Embedded with Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCN) particles, an innovative biobased material derived from wood biomass, have garnered significant interest, particularly in the biomedical field, for their distinctive properties as biocompatible particle adsorbents. However, their microscopic size complicates their separation in liquid media, thereby impeding their application in various domains. In this study, superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles (NPs), specifically iron oxide Fe3O4 NPs with an average size of 15 nm, were used to enhance the collection efficiency of TOCN-Fe3O4 composite particles synthesized through spray drying. These composite particles exhibited a remarkable ζ-potential (approximately -50 mV), indicating their high stability in water, as well as impressive magnetization properties (up to 47 emu/g), and rapid magnetic responsiveness within 60 s in water (3 wt % Fe3O4 to TOCN, 1 T magnet). Furthermore, the influence of Fe3O4 NP concentrations on the measurement of the speed of magnetic separation was quantitatively discussed. Additionally, the binding affinity of the synthesized particles for proteins was assessed on a streptavidin-biotin binding system, offering crucial insights into their binding capabilities with specific proteins and underscoring their significant potential as functionalized biomedical materials.

Metal Sulfide S-Scheme Homojunction for Photocatalytic Selective Phenylcarbinol Oxidation

Metal sulfide-based homojunction photocatalysts are extensively explored with improved photocatalytic performance. However, the construction of metal sulfide-based S-scheme homojunction remains a challenge. Herein, the fabrication of 2D CdIn2S4 nanosheets coated 3D CdIn2S4 octahedra (referred to as 2D/3D n-CIS/o-CIS) S-scheme homojunction photocatalyst is reported by simply adjustment of polyvinyl pyrrolidone amount during the solvothermal synthesis. The formation of S-scheme homojunction within n-CIS/o-CIS is systematically investigated via a series of characterizations, which can generate an internal electric field to facilitate the separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The 2D/3D n-CIS/o-CIS composite exhibits significantly improved photocatalytic activity and stability in the selective oxidation of phenylcarbinol (PhCH2OH) to benzaldehyde (PhCHO) when compared to pure n-CIS and o-CIS samples under visible light irradiation. It is hoped that this work can contribute novel insights into the development of metal sulfides S-scheme homojunction photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Construction of Functional Phenolic Resin and Carbon Hollow Spheres by Manipulating Structural Inhomogeneity

Hollow carbonaceous spheres are extraordinarily attractive for their unique structural features and wide applications in various fields. Herein, a facile and effective synthesis methodology based on the extended Stöber process for construction of phenolic resin hollow spheres has been presented. Combined with a series of characterization techniques, the synthesis process was systematically investigated, and a possible synthesis mechanism was proposed. It is revealed that the structural inhomogeneity of the polymer product achieved by using dodecylamine and alkane is responsible for the formation of hollow architecture, which depends on spontaneous selective dissolution during the synthesis process. Different metal-doped carbonaceous hollow spheres can be obtained by introducing corresponding precursors into the synthetic system and meeting requirements of different application fields. This work presented a novel synthesis strategy of hollow carbonaceous spheres, which is significant for building a new platform of advanced functional carbon-based composites.

Controllable Synthesis of Porous and Hollow Nanostructured Catalyst Particles and Their Soot Oxidation

The introduction of macroporous structures into three-way catalysts (TWCs) through polymer template-assisted spray drying has attracted attention because of its enhanced gas diffusion and catalytic performance. However, the surface charge effect of polymeric template components has not been investigated to control the structure of the TWC particles during synthesis. Thus, this study investigated the effect of template surface charges on the self-assembly behavior of TWC nanoparticles (NPs) during drying. The self-assembly of TWC NPs and polymer particles with different charges produced a hollow structure, whereas using the same charges generated a porous one. Consequently, the mechanism of particle self-assembly during drying and final structure particle formation is proposed in this study. Here, porous TWC particles demonstrated a faster oxidation of soot particles than that of hollow-structured particles. This occurred as a result of the larger contact area between the catalyst surface and the solid reactant. Our findings propose a fundamental self-assembly mechanism for the formation of different TWC structures, thereby enhancing soot oxidation performance using macroporous structures.

Spatiotemporal Synergism in Osteomyelitis Treatment with Photoactivated Core-Shell Zinc Oxide/Silver Sulfide Heterogeneous Nanoparticles

Osteomyelitis is primarily caused by bacterial infections, and treatment requires precise sequential therapy, including antibacterial therapy in the early stages and bone defect reconstruction in later stages. We aimed to synthesize core-shell-structured zinc oxide/silver sulfide heterogeneous nanoparticles (ZnO/Ag2S NPs) using wet chemical methods. Using density functional theory and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, we showed that the optimized band structure endowed ZnO/Ag2S NPs with photodynamic properties under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Moreover, ZnO/Ag2S NPs exhibited a distinguished and stable photothermal performance within the same wavelength range. With single-wavelength irradiation, ZnO/Ag2S NPs achieved a bifunctional antibacterial effect during the acute stage of osteomyelitis. Antibacterial action was confirmed through colony-forming unit (CFU) counting assays, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) observations, live-dead staining, growth curves, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays. The Ag2S coating on the NPs realized the sustained release of zinc ions, thereby controlling the zinc ion concentration. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining, alizarin red S (ARS) staining, and qPCR assays confirmed that the ZnO/Ag2S NPs exhibited good osteogenic effects in vitro. These effects were verified in an in vivo mouse femur model during chronic stages using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histological analysis. This study provides a novel biocompatible core-shell nanomaterial for the two-phase treatment of osteomyelitis, contributing to versatile nanotherapies for infections and inflammation.

Toughening brittle kraft lignin coating on mismatched substrate with spider Silk-Inspired protein as an interfacial modulator

Current production of functional coatings majorly relies on petrochemical formulations. While they have provided substantial benefits, their fabrication processes as well as their disposal created widespread ecological catastrophes. Thus, there is a pressing demand and calls for a radical transformation to develop sustainable solutions by using renewable building blocks. Herein, we report on a novel coating formulation by combining largely undervalued kraft lignin from the forest industry, with genetically engineered and recombinantly produced spider silk-inspired protein through the industrial biotechnology platform. Unmodified kraft lignin was used as the main bulk component in the coating given its abundance and low cost. The nanometer-thin spider silk-inspired protein (SSIP) was used as a primary layer exhibiting dual functionalities: (i) modulating the mechanical properties of inherently brittle kraft lignin, (ii) substantially increasing the interfacial binding of kraft lignin to the underlying rigid silica substrate with the mismatched physicochemical properties. Our findings demonstrate how synergistic interplay components could result in scalable and durable functional coatings which could potentially be used in various medical and industrial applications in the future.

Macropore-Size Engineering toward Enhancing the Catalytic Performance of CO Oxidation over Three-Way Catalyst Particles

In recent years, transportation-related air pollution has escalated into a global concern, necessitating the development of a three-way catalyst (TWC) technology to address harmful emissions. However, the efficiency of TWC's performance in mitigating these emissions has been hindered because of limited mass transfer efficiency within their structures. Thus, this study attempted to overcome the existing issue by synthesizing a series of macroporous TWC particles exhibiting various macropore sizes via a template-assisted spray process, aiming to achieve optimal mass transfer efficiency and catalytic performance. The synthesis incorporated various template particles (size of 67-381 nm) to obtain various macroporous structures. Thereafter, these macroporous particles were assessed for their carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation performance, revealing a substantial influence of the macropore size on the catalytic performance of TWC structures. Interestingly, among the investigated samples, those containing the smallest and largest macropores demonstrated the highest CO oxidation performances. Based on these results, a plausible reactant diffusion mechanism was proposed to explain the effect of the macropore size on the diffusion efficiency within the macroporous structures. This work may have significant implications in optimizing the macroporous structure to enhance catalytic performance in the gas purification process.

Multifunctional, Hybrid Materials Design via Spray-Drying: Much more than Just Drying

Spray-drying is a popular and well-known "drying tool" for engineers. This perspective highlights that, beyond this application, spray-drying is a very interesting and powerful tool for materials chemists to enable the design of multifunctional and hybrid materials. Upon spray-drying, the confined space of a liquid droplet is narrowed down, and its ingredients are forced together upon "falling dry." As  detailed in this article, this enables the following material formation strategies either individually or even in combination: nanoparticles and/or molecules can be assembled; precipitation reactions as well as chemical syntheses can be performed; and templated materials can be designed. Beyond this, fragile moieties can be processed, or "precursor materials" be prepared. Post-treatment of spray-dried objects eventually enables the next level in the design of complex materials. Using spray-drying to design (particulate) materials comes with many advantages-but also with many challenges-all of which are outlined here. It is believed that multifunctional, hybrid materials, made via spray-drying, enable very unique property combinations that are particularly highly promising in myriad applications-of which catalysis, diagnostics, purification, storage, and information are highlighted.

Synthesis of Submicron-Sized Spherical Silica-Coated Iron Nickel Particles with Adjustable Shell Thickness via Swirler Connector-Assisted Spray Pyrolysis

Silica-coated iron nickel (FeNi@SiO2) particles have attracted significant attention because of their potential applications in electronic devices. In this work, submicron-sized spherical FeNi@SiO2 particles with precisely controllable shell thickness were successfully synthesized for the first time using a swirler connector-assisted spray pyrolysis system, comprising a preheater, specific connector, and main heater. The results indicated that the thickness of the SiO2 shell can be tuned from 3 to 23 nm by adjusting the parameter conditions (i.e., preheater temperature, SiO2 supplied amount). Furthermore, our fabrication method consistently yielded a high coating ratio of more than 94%, indicating an excellent quality of the synthesized particles. Especially, to gain an in-depth understanding of the particle formation process of the FeNi@SiO2 particles, a plausible mechanism was also investigated. These findings highlight the importance of controlling the preheater and SiO2 supplied amount to obtain FeNi@SiO2 particles with desirable morphology and high coating quality.

Drug-Facilitated Crystallization of Spray-Dried CD-MOFs with Tunable Morphology, Porosity, And Dissolution Profile

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with versatile functionalities have applications in environmental science, sensor separation, catalysis, and drug delivery. In particular, MOFs used in drug delivery should be biodegradable and easy to control. In this study, spray-dried cyclodextrin-based MOFs (CD-MOFs) with tunable crystallinity, porosity, and dissolution properties were fabricated. The spray-drying precursor properties, such as ethanol volume ratio, incubation time, and precursor concentration, were optimized for controlled crystallization. On the basis of the morphology, X-ray diffraction peak intensity, and specific surface areas of the spray-dried CD-MOF products, they were categorized as amorphous, partially crystalline, and highly crystalline. An active pharmaceutical ingredient ketoconazole (KCZ) was introduced into the precursor to prepare KCZ-containing CD-MOFs. The surface areas of these products were greater by 3-fold (292 m2/g) than that of the plain CD-MOF (94.1 m2/g) prepared using the same parameters. The presence of KCZ in the hydrophobic cavity between the two γ-CD molecules was correlated to the CD-MOF crystal growth. Additionally, CD-MOF particles exhibited different dissolution behaviors on the basis of the position of KCZ in the MOF. These spray-dried CD-MOFs with tunable morphology, specific surface area, and dissolution could have potential applications in various fields.

Multifunctional Carbon-Dot-Photosensitizer Nanoassemblies for Inhibiting Amyloid Aggregates, Suppressing Microbial Infection, and Overcoming the Blood-Brain Barrier

Amyloid aggregation, microbial infection, and the blood-brain barrier (BBB) are considered critical obstructions for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). At present, existing treatment strategies are rarely able to overcome these critical factors. Herein, we propose an innovative treatment strategy and design multifunctional nanoassemblies (yCDs-Ce6) from coassembling photosensitizers (chlorine e6) and yellow fluorescent carbon dots, which endow yCDs-Ce6 with the functions for photodynamic and photothermal therapy (PDT and PTT). Compared with reported inhibitors, yCDs-Ce6 can suppress amyloid aggregation for 7 days, disaggregate aggregates, reduce amyloid aggregation-induced cytotoxicity, and prevent microbial growth by PDT and PTT. Moreover, yCDs-Ce6 can specifically target amyloid aggregates and visually label amyloid aggregates. yCDs-Ce6 can also cross the BBB upon near-infrared light irradiation and clear amyloid deposition in APP/PS1 mice by PDT and PTT. Meanwhile, yCDs-Ce6 did not cause significant negative effects on normal cells or tissues. Based on the methods of PPT and PTT treatment, the research deeply explores the effect of the novel nanoassemblies on two hypotheses of AD, opening a novel therapeutic paradigm for research amyloid-related diseases.

The Practical Utility of Imidazolium Hydrogen Sulfate Ionic Liquid in Fabrication of Lignin-Based Spheres: Structure Characteristic and Antibacterial Activity

In this study, lignin-based spherical particles (Lig-IL) with the use of 1-(propoxymethyl)-1H-imidazolium hydrogen sulfate were prepared in different biopolymer and ionic liquid (IL) weight ratios. The application of IL during the preparation of spherical particles is an innovative method, which may be beneficial for further applications. The particles were obtained with the use of the soft-templating method and their chemical, structural and morphological characterization was performed. The spherical shape of products and their size (91–615 nm) was confirmed with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and the particle size distribution results. The attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra were analyzed to identify functional groups of all precursors and produced material and it was confirmed, that all materials exhibit characteristic hydroxyl and carboxylic groups, but the presence of carbonyl group was detected. Moreover, the zeta potential analysis was performed to evaluate the electrokinetic behavior of obtained materials. It was confirmed, that all materials are colloidally stable in pH above 4. Produced lignin-based spherical particles were used for evaluation of their antibacterial properties. Particles were tested against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a gram-positive bacterium, and Escherichia coli (E. coli), a gram-negative one. It was observed, that only the material with the highest addition of IL showed the antibacterial properties against both strains. A reduction of 50% in the number of microorganisms was observed for particles with the addition of hydrogen sulfate ionic liquid in a 1:1 ratio after 1 h. However, all prepared materials exhibited the antibacterial activity against a gram-positive bacterium.

Hierarchical porous carbon foam electrodes fabricated from waste polyurethane elastomer template for electric double-layer capacitors

Plastic waste has become a major global environmental concern. The utilization of solid waste-derived porous carbon for energy storage has received widespread attention in recent times. Herein, we report the comparison of electrochemical performance of porous carbon foams (CFs) produced from waste polyurethane (PU) elastomer templates via two different activation pathways. Electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) fabricated from the carbon foam exhibited a gravimetric capacitance of 74.4 F/g at 0.1 A/g. High packing density due to the presence of carbon spheres in the hierarchical structure offered excellent volumetric capacitance of 134.7 F/cm³ at 0.1 A/g. Besides, the CF-based EDLCs exhibited Coulombic efficiency close to 100% and showed stable cyclic performance for 5000 charge-discharge cycles with good capacitance retention of 97.7% at 3 A/g. Low equivalent series resistance (1.05 Ω) and charge transfer resistance (0.23 Ω) due to the extensive presence of hydroxyl functional groups contributed to attaining high power (48.89 kW/kg). Based on the preferred properties such as high specific surface area, hierarchical pore structure, surface functionalities, low metallic impurities, high conductivity and desirable capacitive behaviour, the CF prepared from waste PU elastomers have shown potential to be adopted as electrodes in EDLCs.

Modulating the Pore Architecture of Ice-Templated Dextran Microparticles Using Molecular Weight and Concentration

Spray freeze drying (SFD) is an ice templating method used to produce highly porous particles with complex pore architectures governed by ice nucleation and growth. SFD particles have been advanced as drug carrier systems, but the quantitative description of the morphology formation in the SFD process is still challenging. Here, the pore space dimensions of SFD particles prepared from aqueous dextran solutions of varying molecular weights (40-200 kDa) and concentrations (5-20%) are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. Coexisting morphologies composed of cellular and dendritic motifs are obtained, which are attributed to variations in the ice growth mechanism determined by the SFD system and modulation of these mechanisms by given precursor solution properties leading to changes in their pore dimensions. Particles with low-aspect ratio cellular pores showing variation of around 0.5-1 μm in diameter with precursor composition but roughly constant with particle diameter are ascribed to a rapid growth regime with high nucleation site density. Image analysis suggests that the pore volume decreases with dextran solid content. Dendritic pores (≈2-20 μm in diameter) with often a central cellular region are identified with surface nucleation and growth followed by a slower growth regime, leading to the overall dendrite surface area scaling approximately linearly with the particle diameter. The dendrite lamellar spacing depends on the concentration according to an inverse power law but is not significantly influenced by molecular weight. Particles with highly elongated cellular pores without lamellar formation show intermediate pore dimensions between the above two limiting morphological types. Analysis of variance and post hoc tests indicate that dextran concentration is the most significant factor in affecting the pore dimensions. The SFD dextran particles herein described could find use in pulmonary drug delivery due to their high porosity and biocompatibility of the matrix material.

Simple, additive-free, extra pressure-free process to direct convert lignin into carbon foams

To achieve lignin valorization, we reported a simple method to direct covert lignin into carbon foam materials in this work. Unlike multiple steps required to fabricate traditional carbon foams from most of other precursors (often non-renewable), the approach herein required solely heating for carbon production. We found that the intrinsic features of lignin render the formation of lignin block meanwhile generate the porous structure under the invented heating course. Three key factors including glass transition temperature, crosslinking ability, and thermal stability of lignin were identified to determine the successful fabrication of lignin foam (i.e., precursor of carbon foam). Upon tuning the heating profile or fractionating the lignin, lignin foam with different morphologies and properties were obtained. After carbonization, the selected lignin-derived carbon foams possessed well porous structures with bulk densities of 0.52 or 0.62 g cm^-3, superior integrity with strength properties of around 10 MPa, BET surface areas of 143.29 or 325.86 m² g^-1, and many other attractive properties. This work is expected to stimulate further seek of lignin valorization in carbon foam production.

Enhanced Protein Adsorption Capacity of Macroporous Pectin Particles with High Specific Surface Area and an Interconnected Pore Network

There has been much interest in developing protein adsorbents using nanostructured particles, which can be engineered porous materials with fine control of the surface and pore structures. A significant challenge in designing porous adsorbents is the high percentage of available binding sites in the pores owing to their large surface areas and interconnected pore networks. In this study, continuing the idea of using porous materials derived from natural polymers toward the goal of sustainable development, porous pectin particles are reported. The template-assisted spray drying method using calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) as a template for pore formation was applied to prepare porous pectin particles. The specific surface area was controlled from 177.0 to 222.3 m² g^-1 by adjusting the CaCO₃ concentration. In addition, the effects of a macroporous structure, the specific surface area, and an interconnected pore network on the protein (lysozyme) adsorption capacity and adsorption mechanism were investigated. All porous pectin particles performed rapid adsorption (∼65% total capacity within 5 min) and high adsorption capacity, increasing from 1543 to the highest value of 2621 mg g^-1. The results are attributed to the high percentage of available binding sites located in the macropores owing to their large surface areas and interconnected pore networks. The macroporous particles obtained in this study showed a higher adsorption capacity (2621 mg g^-1) for lysozyme than other adsorbents. Moreover, the rapid uptake and high performance of this material show its potential as an advanced adsorbent for various macromolecules in the food and pharmaceutical fields.

A Sustainable Approach for Preparing Porous Carbon Spheres Derived from Kraft Lignin and Sodium Hydroxide as Highly Packed Thin Film Electrode Materials

A green synthetic strategy to design biomass-derived porous carbon electrode materials with precisely tailored structure and morphology has always been a challenging goal because these materials can fulfill the demands of next-generation supercapacitors and other electrochemical devices. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) is extensively utilized as an activator since it can produce porous carbon with high specific surface area and well-developed porous channels. The exploitation of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as an activating agent is less referenced in the literature, although it offers some advantages over KOH in terms of low cost, less corrosiveness, and simple handling procedure, all of which are appealing particularly from an industrial viewpoint. The motivation for this present study is to fabricate porous carbon spheres in a sustainable manner via a spray drying approach followed by a carbonization process, using Kraft lignin as the carbon precursor and NaOH as an alternative activation agent instead of the high-cost and high-corrosive KOH for the first time. The structure of carbon particles can be accurately transitioned from a compact to hollow structure, and the surface textural properties can be easily tuned by altering the NaOH concentration. The obtained porous carbon spheres were applied as highly packed thin film electrode materials for supercapacitor devices. The specific capacitance value of porous carbon spheres with a highly compact structure (high packing density) is 66.5 F g^-1, which is higher than that of commercial activated carbon and other biomass-derived carbon. This work provides a green processing for producing low-cost and environment-friendly porous carbon spheres from abundant Kraft lignin and important insight for selecting NaOH as an activator to tailor the morphology and structure, which represents an economical and sustainable approach for energy storage devices.

Lignin Derived Porous Carbons: Synthesis Methods and Supercapacitor Applications

Lignin, one of the renewable constituents in natural plant biomasses, holds great potential as a sustainable source of functional carbon materials. Tremendous research efforts have been made on lignin-derived carbon electrodes for rechargeable batteries. However, lignin is considered as one of the most promising carbon precursors for the development of high-performance, low-cost porous carbon electrode materials for supercapacitor applications. Yet, these efforts have not been reviewed in detail in the current literature. This review, therefore, offers a basis for the utilization of lignin as a pivotal precursor for the synthesis of porous carbons for use in supercapacitor electrode applications. Lignin chemistry, the synthesis process of lignin-derived porous carbons, and future directions for developing better porous carbon electrode materials from lignin are systematically reviewed. Technological hurdles and approaches that should be prioritized in future research are presented.

Computer Analysis of the Porous Structure of Activated Carbons Derived from Various Biomass Materials by Chemical Activation

In this study, the preparation of activated carbons from various materials of biomass origin by activation with potassium hydroxide and a comprehensive computer analysis of their porous structure and adsorption properties based on benzene (C₆H₆) adsorption isotherms were carried out. In particular, the influence of the mass ratio of the activator’s dry mass to the char mass on the formation of the microporous structure of the obtained activated carbons was analysed. The summary of the analyses carried out based on benzene adsorption isotherms begged the conclusion that activated carbon with a maximum adsorption volume in the first adsorbed layer and homogeneous surface can be obtained from ebony wood at a mass ratio of the activator to the char of R = 3. The obtained results confirmed the superiority of the new numerical-clustering-based adsorption analysis (LBET) method over simple methods of porous structure analysis, such as the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Dubinin–Raduskevich (DR) methods. The LBET method is particularly useful in the evaluation of the influence of the methods and conditions of production of activated carbons on the formation of their porous structure. This method, together with an appropriate economic analysis, can help in the precise selection of methods and conditions for the process of obtaining activated carbons at specific manufacturing costs, and thus makes it possible to obtain materials that can successfully compete with those of other technologies used in industrial practice and everyday life.

Development of functional lignin-based spherical particles for the removal of vanadium(V) from an aqueous system

A new type of functional lignin-based spherical particles (L-CTAB) prepared with the use of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was applied as an effective biosorbent for removing vanadium(V) ions. The porous structure, characteristic functional groups, electrokinetic stability, morphology and size of the L-CTAB particles were examined. The conditions of removal were also investigated, including pH (2-12), sorbent mass (0.1-0.5 g), concentration (10-100 mg/dm3), phase contact time (1-240 min) and temperature (293-333 K). At pH 5.0 the maximum sorption percentage (%S) of V(V) was 45%, while at pH 2.0 it was 32%. The maximum sorption capacity of V(V) for L-CTAB was found to be 10.79 mg/g. The kinetic data indicate that the sorption followed the pseudo-second-order and film diffusion models. Sorption equilibrium for V(V) ions removal by L-CTAB was reached after 60 min at the initial concentrations 10 and 50 mg/dm³. It has been shown that the adsorption of V(V) ions on the surface of L-CTAB is a heterogeneous, endothermic and spontaneous reaction, as evidenced by the calculated values of thermodynamic parameters - free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) - for the tested systems at different temperatures. HCl solutions, used as an L-CTAB regeneration agent, quantitatively eluted V(V) ions.

Synthesis of High Specific Surface Area Macroporous Pectin Particles by Template-Assisted Spray Drying

Many types of porous particles containing inorganic and organic substances, such as carbon, metals, metal oxides, inorganic-organic hybrids, and polymers, have been developed. However, natural polymer-derived particles are relatively rare. To our knowledge, this report describes the first synthetic method for obtaining meso-/macroporous particles made from pectin, which is a natural polymer with a wide range of biological activities suitable for active substance support applications. These porous particles were prepared using a template-assisted spray-drying method, followed by a chemical etching process. An organic template [i.e., poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)] or an inorganic template [i.e., calcium carbonate (CaCO₃)] was used to evaluate the resulting formation of macroporous structures in the pectin particles. Furthermore, the concentration of the templates in the precursor solution was varied to better understand the mechanism of porous pectin particle formation. The results showed that the final porous particles maintained the characteristic properties of pectin. The differences between the two templates resulted in two distinct types of porous particles that differed in their particle morphologies (i.e., spherical or wrinkled), particle sizes (ranging from 3 to 8 μm), pore sizes (ranging from 80 to 350 nm), and pore volume (ranging from 0.024 to 1.40 cm³ g^-1). Especially, the porous pectin particles using the CaCO₃ template have a significantly high specific surface area of 171.2 m² g^-1, which is 114 times higher than that of nonporous pectin particles. These data demonstrated the potential for using PMMA and CaCO₃ templates to control and design desired porous materials.
