Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals living with intra-articular temporomandibular disorders (IA-TMDs) often report limitations with mouth opening activities. While clinical measures such as active range of motion (AROM) and movement quality are often used to assess mouth opening function, it is unclear if and how these relate to patient-reported limitations and whether other factors such as kinesiophobia influence mouth opening activities in those with IA-TMDs. OBJECTIVES Compare clinical measures of mouth opening function in those with IA-TMDs to asymptomatic controls. In those with an IA/TMD, explore relationships between patient-reported mouth opening limitations, and mouth opening function and kinesiophobia. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHOD Clinical mouth opening function (AROM, movement quality, pain on movement/10, stiffness on movement/10) was compared between groups (n = 30 IA-TMD, n = 30 controls). Within the IA-TMD group, correlations between patient-reported mouth opening limitations (Patient specific functional scale), kinesiophobia (Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia for Temporomandibular Disorders) and clinical measures of mouth opening function were explored. RESULTS Impairments in AROM (-4 mm, p = 0.04, d = 0.5), movement quality (p < 0.01, φ = 0.6), pain on movement (p < 0.01, d = 0.8) and stiffness on movement (p < 0.01, d = 1.6) were observed in the IA-TMD group compared to controls. Patient-reported mouth opening limitations and kinesiophobia were significantly correlated (r = -0.48, p < 0.01); no correlation was found between patient-reported limitations and clinical mouth opening measures (r < 0.3, p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Mouth opening function is impaired in IA-TMD. However, kinesiophobia appears more related to patient-reported mouth opening limitations than clinical impairments. Consideration of clinical, kinesiophobia and patient-reported limitation measures are necessary to direct management of IA-TMD in those presenting for care.

Abstract
AIMS to map and synthesize the results from studies that assessed whether individuals diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) have abnormal masseter and temporal muscles activation during the masticatory cycle. METHODS Six databases were searched for comparative observational studies assessing masticatory muscles activation in individuals with CP through electromyography analysis. Methodological quality was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Critical Appraisal Checklist. Outcome data were combined in meta-analysis using the Review Manager software. RESULTS We included five cross-sectional studies with an overall low risk of bias. Meta-analyses showed no difference between CP and healthy individuals regarding maximum voluntary isometric contraction: right masseter (Standard mean difference [SMD] - 0.95; 95% CI -2.03 to 0.13); left masseter (SMD -0.92; 95% CI -1.93 to 0.09); right temporal (SMD -0.72; 95% CI -1.63 to 0.18); and left temporal (SMD -0.68; 95% CI -1.76 to 0.40). Electrical activity amplitude in the inactive period was superior in the CP group, and maximum bite pressure presented higher values in the control group (Mean difference [MD] - 17.38; CI 95% -26.62 to -10.15). CONCLUSIONS Based on observational studies with a lower level of evidence, individuals with CP seem to present difficulties activating masticatory muscles. Future prospective cohort studies with rigorous methodology are still necessary to support these findings. PROSPERO register CRD42020208444.

Abstract
The aim of this review was to answer the following PICO question: "Do TMJ kinematic parameters (intervention and comparison) show efficacy for assessment of mandibular function (Outcome) both in asymptomatic and TMD subjects? (Population)". PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Central databases were searched. The inclusion criteria were (1) performed on human, (2) English only, (3) on healthy, symptomatic or surgically altered TMJ, (4) measured dynamic kinematics of mandible or TMJ (5) with six degrees of freedom. To assess the Risk of Bias, the Joanna Briggs Institute tool for non-randomised clinical studies was employed. A pairwise meta-analysis was carried out using STATA v.17.0 (Stata). The heterogeneity was estimated using the Q value and the inconsistency index. Ninety-two articles were included in qualitative synthesis, nine studies in quantitative synthesis. The condylar inclination was significantly increased in female (effect size 0.03°, 95% CI: -0.06, 0.12, p = 0.00). Maximum mouth opening (MMO) was increased significantly in female population in comparison with males (effect size 0.65 millimetres (0.36, 1.66). Incisor displacement at MMO showed higher values for control groups compared with TMD subjects (overall effect size 0.16 millimetres (-0.37, 0.69). Evidence is still needed, considering the great variety of devices and parameters used for arthrokinematics. The present study suggests standardising outcomes, design, and population of the future studies in order to obtain more reliable and repeatable values.

Abstract
Motion of the mandible and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays a pivotal role in the function of the dentition and associated hard and soft tissue structures, and facilitates mastication, oral communication and access to respiratory and digestive systems. Quantification of TMJ kinematics is clinically relevant in cases of prosthetic rehabilitations, TMJ disorders, osteoarthritis, trauma, tumour resection and congenital abnormalities, which are known to directly influence mandibular motion and loading. The objective of this systematic review was to critically investigate published literature on historic and contemporary measurement modalities used to quantify in vivo mandibular and TMJ kinematics in six degrees of freedom. The electronic databases of Scopus, Web of Science, Medline, Embase and Central were searched and 109 relevant articles identified. Publication quality was documented using a modified Downs and Black checklist. Axiography and ultrasonic tracking are commonly employed in the clinical setting due to their simplicity and capacity to rapidly acquire low-fidelity mandibular motion data. Magnetic and optoelectronic tracking have been used in combination with dental splints to produce higher accuracy measurements while minimising skin motion artefact, but at the expense of setup time and cost. Four-dimensional computed tomography provides direct 3D measurement of mandibular and TMJ motion while circumventing skin motion artefact entirely, but employs ionising radiation, is restricted to low sampling frequencies, and requires time-consuming image processing. Recent advances in magnetic tracking using miniature sensors adhered to the teeth in combination with intraoral scanning may facilitate rapid and high precision mandibular kinematics measurement in the clinical setting. The findings of this review will guide selection and application of mandibular and TMJ kinematic measurement for both clinical and research applications.

Abstract
Early identification and intervention has shown better health outcomes for children with dysphagia. Instrumental swallowing assessments are vital and have been a focus of dysphagia research in the last two decades. This systematic review explores published quantitative instrumental measures of swallowing in children. Five subject-related databases were searched to identify original scientific articles published in English, using instrumental quantitative measures of swallowing to study swallowing/feeding mechanism in children since 1998. Two thousand two hundred and two articles were found from the initial database search and 36 were included in the final qualitative synthesis following PRISMA guidelines. Selected studies showed great diversity in target population, phase/s of swallowing studied, instrumentation used (n = 10) and quantitative measures reported (n = 144). Videofluoroscopy and manometry have been studied most repeatedly. With less frequency, a variety of other instruments has been used to describe suck-swallow patterns and swallowing-related respiration. High-resolution manometry shows the greatest increase in publications with validated, reliable quantitative measures of pharyngeal and oesophageal pressures and timing. More recently, quantification of videofluoroscopy analysis has been a focus.Conclusion: A diverse range of quantitative measures of swallowing is available for children in the literature. However, further reliability and validity testing is needed. Opportunities for clinical application of these quantitative manometric and videofluoroscopic measures are restricted by limited normative comparisons and vast variability in published measures.What is known?• Instrumental swallowing assessments are reliable and accurate in diagnosing swallowing difficulties in children.• However, subjective interpretation of observational findings often questions the optimal use of instrumentation.What is new?• High-resolution manometry has shown promising progress with the development of quantitative objective swallow measures for children. While attempts to quantify video-fluoroscopic measures have been increased in the recent past.• A vast variety of instruments has been used to obtain quantitative and/or objective swallow measures of children, yet clinical application is still in progress.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW This article reviews recent developments in the instrumental assessment of swallowing in children with a specific focus on research published between January 2017 and June 2018. RECENT FINDINGS Instrumental swallowing assessments reported in the time period included: videofluoroscopic study of swallowing, digital cervical auscultation, dynamic ultrasound, high-resolution impedance manometry, nasal airflow thermistry and respiratory inductance plethysmography. Several studies were found exploring tools to objectively quantify videofluoroscopic study of swallowing data; swallowing from the mouth through to stomach was addressed including approaches to analysing mastication as well as evaluating oesophageal motility disorders. SUMMARY Even though a vast range of instrumentation were studied, lack of clarity on clinical feasibility and objective measures that facilitate medical decision-making in practice mean further research is required to provide guidance on implementation. Promising novel approaches to aid the quantification of swallowing physiology from the mouth, pharynx and through to the oesophagus are emerging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mixing ability test (MAT) as an outcome measure of masticatory performance is largely used in studies with adults, but not yet with children. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to test the construct validity and the test-retest reliability of the MAT in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) and children with typical development (TD). METHOD The results of the MAT were correlated with tongue movements, mandible movements, relative muscle contraction and clinical observation measured with ultrasound, 3D kinematics, electromyography (EMG) and relevant items of the mastication observation and evaluation (MOE) instrument, respectively. Moreover, the between-groups effect was tested. Test-retest reliability was calculated with an intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and standard error of measurement (SEM). RESULTS Twenty-one children (seven children with spastic CP and 14 children with TD) participated in this study. The MAT scores showed moderate to good correlations with some variables of the tongue movements, horizontal mandible movements and occlusion duration, relative muscle contraction of the left temporalis and all six MOE items (-0.80 < r < 0.49). The MAT scores were significantly higher for children with CP (mean 22.6; SD 2.4) compared to children with TD (mean 19.9; SD 1.9). The test-retest reliability had an ICC of 0.7 and a SEM of 1.16 (±5% of the mean score). CONCLUSION These results indicate that the MAT is suitable and complementary to ultrasound, 3D kinematics, EMG and observation to compare the masticatory performance between children with CP and children with TD, with an acceptable test-retest reliability.
