Composting of anaerobic sludge: an economically feasible element of a sustainable sewage sludge management

Microbial electrochemical enhanced composting of sludge and kitchen waste: Electricity generation, composting efficiency and health risk assessment for land use

To realize the energy and resource utilization from organic solid waste, a two-phase microbial desalination cell (TPMDC) was constructed using dewatered sludge and kitchen waste as the anode substrate. The performance of electricity generation and composting efficacy was investigated, along with a comprehensive assessment of the potential health risks associated with the land use of the resulting mixed compost products. Experimental outcomes revealed a maximum open-circuit voltage of 0.893 ± 0.005 V and a maximum volumetric power density of 0.797 ± 0.009 W/m³. After 90 days of composting enhanced by microbial electrochemistry, a significant organic matter removal rate of 31.13 ± 0.44 % was obtained, and the anode substrate electric conductivity was reduced by 30.02 ± 0.04 % based on the anode desalination. Simultaneously, there was an increase in the content of available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as an improvement in the seed germination index. The forms of heavy metals shifted from bioavailable to stable residual states. The non-carcinogenic hazard index (HI) values for heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the land use of compost products were less than 1, and the total carcinogenic risk (TCR) values for heavy metals and PAHs were below the acceptable threshold of 10-4. The occupational population risk of infection from five pathogens was higher than that of the general public, with all risk values ranging from 8.67 × 10-8 to 1, where the highest risk was attributed to occupational exposure to Legionella. These outcomes demonstrated that the mixture of dewatered sludge and kitchen waste was an appropriate anode substrate to enhance TPMDC stability for electricity generation, and its compost products have promising land use suitability and acceptable land use risk, which will provide important guidance for the safe treatment and disposal of organic solid waste.

Treatment of Sewage Sludge Compost Leachates on a Green Waste Biopile: A Case Study for an On-Site Application

This work proposes a suitable treatment for the leachates from a sewage sludge composting process using a specific windrow (biopile). The biopile’s evolution and organic content degradation were followed for 2 months with regular leachate spraying to assess the physico-chemical and biological impacts, and determine the risk of enrichment with certain monitored pollutants. The final objective was the valorization of the biopile substrates in the composting process, while respecting the quality standards of use in a circular economy way. Classical physico-chemical parameters (pH, conductivity, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), etc.) were measured in the leachates and in the water-extractable and dry-solid fractions of the biopile, and the catabolic evolution of the micro-organisms (diversity and activities), as well as the enrichment with persistent organic pollutants (POPs) (prioritized PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls)), were determined. The results showed that the microbial populations that were already present in the biopile, and that are responsible for biodegradation, were not affected by leachate spraying. Even when the studied compost leachate was highly concentrated with ammonium nitrogen (10.4 gN L−1 on average), it significantly decreased in the biopile after 2 weeks. A study on the evolution of the isotopic signature (δ15 N) confirmed the loss of leachate nitrogen in its ammoniacal form. The bio-physico-chemical characteristics of the biopile at the end of the experiment were similar to those before the first spraying with leachate. Moreover, no significant enrichment with contaminants (metal trace elements, volatile fatty acids, or persistent organic pollutants) was observed. The results show that it would be possible for composting platforms to implement this inexpensive and sustainable process for the treatment of leachates.

Environmental performance of dewatered sewage sludge digestate utilization based on life cycle assessment

Due to the global trend of urbanization, the amount of sewage water is increasing in cities. This calls for efficient treatment of the resulting sewage sludge. To date, in the 27 European Union member countries (EU-27), the prevailing treatment method is application on arable land. Anaerobic digestion is one of the treatment methods being increasingly used nowadays. However, the resulting digestate requires further utilization. Therefore, in this study, the environmental performance of composting, combustion, and pyrolysis options for dewatered sewage sludge digestate is evaluated based on a life cycle assessment. The results show that digestate combustion and composting performed better than pyrolysis for most of the selected impact categories. However, pyrolysis of sewage sludge is still under development, and there are, to some degree, uncertainties in the data related to this technology; thus, more information for the performance assessment of pyrolysis is still required.

Safety and efficiency of sewage sludge and garden waste compost as a soil amendment based on the field application in woodland

Sewage sludge (SS) and garden waste (GW) compost can be used as soil amendments to improve the soil environment. Studies done till date have been focused on the changes of harmful substances during sludge composting, but the safety and efficacy of SS and GW composting on woodland soil environment are still unclear. In the study, a field experiment was performed using to investigate the safety and efficacy of SS and GW compost as a soil amendment on woodland soil. Soil nutrients (such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium), organic matter and electrical conductivity were significantly increased after the addition of the SS and GW compost, while there were no significant changes in soil heavy metals content and soil enzyme activities. From these soil properties, it was found that SS and GW compost was safe and efficacious in improving the soil environment. The application of SS and GW compost had no significant effect on microbial diversity. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that SS and GW compost efficaciously enhanced the interaction between bacterial communities, which proved that it was safe and efficacious. Furthermore, SS and GW compost enhanced ABC transporters and carbohydrate metabolism of bacterial community, while reduced the pathotroph action (such as the plant pathogen) and wood saprotrophs. Overall, these results proved the safety and efficacy of SS and GW compost as soil amendments after being added to the soil. This study contributes to the use of harmless treatments and reutilization processes of SS and GW.

Biodegradation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and the influence of environmental factors during the co-composting of sewage sludge and green forest waste

The main aim of this research was to study the biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the influence of environmental factors during composting in order to realize the utilization of PAHs contaminated sewage sludge. A production scale compost experiment was conducted with three mixtures of sewage sludge (SS): green forest waste (GFW) at quality ratios of 3:1 (T1), 3:2 (T2) and 3:3 (T3). The residual concentration of PAHs in the three treatments met the permissible limit prescribed by the Agricultural Sludge Pollutant Control Standard (GB 4284-2018). The biodegradation rates of PAHs were 0.0280, 0.0281 and 0.0218 mg/d, and removal efficiencies were 70.7%, 75.2% and 62.4% in T1, T2, T3, respectively, which followed the first-order rate kinetics. The residual concentration of PAHs in T2 was the lowest (1.81 mg/kg), while the germination index (GI) of Tall Fescues (~0.9) was the highest during 50 days of co-composting. The bacterial diversity negatively correlated with the residual PAHs content. The main genus, Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Methylotenera, with cellulose-degrading and PAHs co-metabolizing functions contributed significantly to sludge maturation and PAHs degradation. The dominant microorganisms, Pseudomonas, Sphingobacterium and Chitinophagaceae_uncultured, could support the high removal rate of PAHs in T2. Temperature, pH, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio had significant positive effect on the compost maturity and quality, and these parameters correlated with the PAHs biodegradation efficiency during composting, especially in T2.

Improvement of Co-Composting by a combined pretreatment Ozonation/Ultrasonic process in stabilization of raw activated sludge

The enhancement of composting technology to stabilize sludge pretreated by ozonation and ultrasonic was tested for 35 days. Secondary sludge produced by biological process are characterized with endogenous residue and inert solid matter which inhibit fully degrade bacterial cell walls. The composting process was performed with sludge pretreated with ozonatian and ultrasonics and green waste in a ratio of 2:1. The composting characteristics was evaluated for different physico-chemical and microbiological parameters in five different reactors. A high degree of composting quality was achieved with respect to significant reduction in volatile solids (VS) (32%), total organic carbon (TOC) (35.0%), C/N ratio (23.74), total coliform (TC) (168) along with the substantial increase in availability of nutrients like N (1.2%) and P (8.77%). High removal efficiency of TC and Fecal Coliform (FC) were observed in composting results, where simultaneous ultrasonic and ozonation were considered as primary-stabilization process. Therefore, applying integrated ultrasonic/ozonation with composting system for sludge stabilization is potentially useful technology in sustainable land restoration practices to meet standards and produce soil conditioner.

Nutrient recovery technologies integrated with energy recovery by waste biomass anaerobic digestion

Anaerobic digestion widely considered as a promising waste biomass disposal treatment approach, is attracting increasing interest in all corners of the globe. However, due to the specific features of different types of waste biomass, the bioenergy conversion efficiency of this process is not ideal. Another problematic aspect of anaerobic digestion is that the nutrient rich effluent sometimes needs to be treated before discharge. This review presents the recent achievements of waste biomass digestion from the perspective of energy recovery and nutrient recovery. In this work, the anaerobic treatment characteristics of common types of waste biomass are summarized and compared. With a focus of nutrient recovery and post treatment issues, the challenges and technical hurdles encountered in the anaerobic digestion of waste biomass are critically reviewed. Finally, an integrated system of anaerobic digestion, anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) and phosphorus recovery is proposed for efficient energy and nutrient recovery from waste biomass.

Characterisation of sludge produced by the agri-food industry and recycling options for its agricultural uses in a typical Mediterranean area, the Segura River basin (Spain)

Agri-food sludge is both an environmental and economic problem, since companies must bear the costs of proper management as required by current disposal regulations. The aim of this work was to quantify the sludges in a typical Mediterranean area like the Segura River basin in Spain, which has a high concentration of agri-food businesses and intensive farming operations. Ultimately, we wanted to offer options for converting this "waste" into a "resource." The agri-food companies studied were classified according to their final product: juices, frozen vegetables or canned products. The total volume of sludge ranged between 12,895 and 22,520 tonnes per year, with an average cost of around 350,000 euros. In characterising the agri-food sludges, we identified a high organic load and nutrient content. Besides, the heavy metal levels were well below those legally permitted in sewage sludge, fertilisers or similar products for agricultural use. Furthermore, we only detected pesticide residues occasionally, and we did not detect Salmonella spp. or Listeria monocytogenes in the samples analysed. E. coli was only found in about 20% of the samples. This paper identifies the most suitable technologies for the specific agri-food industries in the area, which are surrounded by intensive agriculture operations. We have analysed direct soil application, sludge drying, composting and the use of anaerobic digestion to produce energy and have shown the main advantages and disadvantages of each. We found that composting and its advanced modifications for making tailored composts are among the most adequate strategies for obtaining organic amendments.

Ecotoxicity of In-Situ Produced Compost Intended for Landfill Restoration

Municipal solid waste (MSW) has become a matter of increasing global concern. Biological conversion is considered to be the most applicable disposal method, especially for the organic fraction of MSW. The aim of this study was to evaluate composting as a treatment method for the sustainable management and recycling of MSW and to test the ecotoxicity of the compost produced on the landfill surface. The ecotoxicity of the compost was investigated by means of a set of biological tests. The ecotoxicological impact of the compost was evaluated by plant growth tests with white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Plants were grown under controlled conditions for 21 days, in earthen pots, treated with MSW compost (MSWC) to study the effect of MSWC on plant biomass production. Sprouts and the number of growing plants occurring in the earthen pots were counted. The values obtained from three simultaneously conducted experiments were averaged and presented. Plants growing in the earthen pots with the compost exhibited increasing plant biomass while no changes were observed in their appearance; retarded growth or necrotic changes were not recorded. The ecotoxicity tests performed show that the analyzed compost produced in the composting plant situated on the landfill surface achieved high percentages of the germinating capacity of white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seeds and can be therefore used in the subsequent reclamation of the landfill concerned.

Improving sewage sludge composting by addition of spent mushroom substrate and sucrose

The effects of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) and sucrose (S) amendment on emissions of nitrogenous gas (mainly NH₃ and N₂O) and end products quality of sewage sludge (SS) composting were evaluated. Five treatments were composted for 20 days in laboratory-scale using SS with different dosages of SMS and S, without additive amended treatment used as control. The results indicated that SMS amendments especially combination with S promoted dehydrogenase activity, CO₂ production, organic matter degradation and humification in the composting, and maturity indices of composting also showed that the 30%SMS+2%S treatment could be much more appropriate to improve the composting process, such as total Kjeldahl nitrogen, nitrification index, humic acids/fulvic acids ratio and germination index, while the emissions of NH₃ and N₂O were reduced by 34.1% and 86.2%, respectively. These results shown that the moderate addition of SMS and S could improve the compost maturity and reduce nitrogenous gas emission.

Improving material and energy recovery from the sewage sludge and biomass residues

Sewage sludge management is a big problem all over the world because of its large quantities and harmful impact on the environment. Energy conversion through fermentation, compost production from treated sludge for agriculture, especially for growing energetic plants, and treated sludge use for soil remediation are widely used alternatives of sewage sludge management. Recently, in many EU countries the popularity of these methods has decreased due to the sewage sludge content (heavy metals, organic pollutions and other hazards materials). This paper presents research results where the possibility of solid recovered fuel (SRF) production from the separate fraction (10-40 mm) of pre-composted materials--sewage sludge from municipal waste water treatment plant and biomass residues has been evaluated. The remaining fractions of pre-composted materials can be successfully used for compost or fertiliser production, as the concentration of heavy metals in the analysed composition is reduced in comparison with sewage sludge. During the experiment presented in this paper the volume of analysed biodegradable waste was reduced by 96%: about 20% of input biodegradable waste was recovered to SRF in the form of pellets with 14.25 MJ kg(-1) of the net calorific value, about 23% were composted, the rest--evaporated and discharged in a wastewater. The methods of material-energy balances and comparison analysis of experiment data have been chosen for the environmental impact assessment of this biodegradable waste management alternative. Results of the efficiency of energy recovery from sewage sludge by SRF production and burning, comparison analysis with widely used bio-fuel-sawdust and conclusions made are presented.
