Identifying the drivers of changes in embodied food-energy-water in the Bohai mega-urban region, China: A perspective of final demands

Food-energy-water (FEW) systems in the Bohai mega-urban region (MUR) have experienced astonishing changes in recent decades; however, the dynamics of these changes are not fully understood. This study combined an ecological multiscale input-output model and a structural decomposition analysis (SDA) to explore the variation in embodied FEW consumption and its drivers. The results showed that, although almost all sectoral embodied FEW intensities decreased, embodied FEW demands increased by approximately 9.9×10⁸ tons, 4.61×10⁷ TJ and 1.1×10¹¹ m³ over 10-year period. The embodied FEW flow diagrams show that local consumption and trade were strengthened. Urban household consumption, fixed capital formation and exports were the main components affecting the embodied FEW use increases. An SDA revealed that the consumption level effect (∆c) was the dominant contributor that promoted the increase in the Bohai MUR's embodied FEW consumption. The scale effect (∆p) also had a positive effect on the embodied FEW consumption increases. The technological effect (∆e) was the primary contributor to offset the embodied FEW consumption increase. The economic efficiency effect (∆L) and structural effect (∆s_d) also contributed to offsetting the total embodied FEW consumption increase. The effect of the change in domestic and foreign imports (∆D and ∆F) impacted the increase in embodied FEW mainly through the change in the embodied FEW intensities and trade volumes. This study identified the changes in FEW systems and highlighted future coping strategies.

How can Chinese metropolises drive global carbon emissions? Based on a nested multi-regional input-output model for China

Given metropolises' participation in complex regional and global trade networks, they have huge demands for vast carbon-embodied intermediate and final goods. To clarify embodied carbon transfers of metropolises in regional and international trade, a metropolis-centered model was constructed by nesting the World's multi-regional input-output table and China's multi-regional input-output (CMRIO) table. Based on this model, we analyzed the multi-scale impact of two typical Chinese metropolises, namely Beijing and Shanghai, on global carbon emissions. Structural decomposition analysis and social network analysis (SNA) were used to explore the driving factors of consumption-based carbon (CBC) and the roles of metropolises in the carbon networks. Results showed that both Beijing and Shanghai are net embodied carbon consumers, which respectively drove 231.19 and 219.52 Mt global carbon emissions in 2017. These figures were underestimated by 12.54 % and 15.41 % when using the CMRIO. After China's economy entered a new normal, instead of technological progress, structural adjustment became the prominent factor driving the CBC reduction of metropolises. During 2012-2017, the consumption structure optimization reduced 18.87 and 32.48 Mt CBC in Beijing and Shanghai, respectively. Compared with other domestic regions, the CBC of Beijing has continued to increase, whereas that of Shanghai has declined. At the international scale, the combined net carbon emission imported by the two metropolises was 88.43 Mt in 2017, equivalent to 18.09 % of China's total carbon deficit. This indicates that metropolises have become pioneering regions for China to alleviate the carbon deficit in international trade. By using SNA, we further found that both metropolises are crucial carbon consumers in the global carbon network, with strong stability and obvious hub roles. Furthermore, various urban functions and geographical locations form the heterogeneous structural characteristics of CBC in the two metropolises, highlighting the need for different strategies for embodied carbon mitigation in these metropolises.

Assessing sectoral water stress states from the demand-side perspective through water footprint dimensions decomposition

Due to its essentiality and scarcity, water is subject to stress from the supply and demand side. The SDG and many methods for assessing water stress (WS) are based on water supply, even though the total water supply is uncontrollable by humans in the short term. Conversely, from a water demand perspective, WS arises from the deliberate and manageable use of water to produce goods and services, with few methods proposing to evaluate WS. We propose a method to assess the sectoral demand-side water stress states (DWSS) to fill this gap. The method comprises a quantitative step followed by a qualitative analysis. Quantitatively, an environmentally extended input-output model integrated Brazilian water resource and economic data for 2010 and 2015, including the imported virtual water in the water footprint calculation. Three dimensions of water footprint (DWF) were calculated: consumptive use of water (CUWF), water consumption (CWF), and return to the environment (REWF). The variations in DWFs over time were used as criteria to define five DWSS ranging from weak to strong. Brazilian economy as a whole presented a moderately weak DWSS. Among economic sectors, the most frequent DWSS was moderately weak, with sixteen sectors. The Livestock and Forestry, fishing, and aquaculture sectors had a strong DWSS, while the Slaughter, meat, and dairy and Public administration sectors had weak DWSS. Despite its limitations, the demand-side analysis can complement the usual method from a supply perspective.

Green development challenges within the environmental management framework

Green development of energy, water and environment systems is essential as these three systems represent the basic life needs of humankind. Therefore, environmental problems arising from each of these three systems need to be carefully addressed to preserve the energy, water and environment resources for future generations. This paper discusses some of the latest developments in three main areas of sustainability themes, namely energy, water and environment, that emerged from the 14th Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) Conference held in 2019. As such, it acts as an editorial paper for the virtual special issue of the Journal of Environmental Management, dedicated to the SDEWES 2019 conference.

A trade-related CO2 emissions and its composition: Evidence from China

Trade-related CO₂ emissions has been widely studied in existing research and them have mainly calculated the CO₂ emissions embodied in overall trade; however, China's domestic value chain (DVC) has developed rapidly, and different regions have different emissions effects due to different trade patterns. This study divides Chinese interregional trade into four trade patterns from the perspective of domestic production fragmentation. Then we develop a decomposition model of the interregional trade-related CO₂ emissions and pollution heaven hypothesis (PHH) of different trade patterns based on China's interregional input-output table for 2002 to 2010. Finally, we explore the influencing factors of the changes of environmental effects using structural decomposition analysis method. The results show that from 2002 to 2010, the volume of CO₂ emissions embodied in interregional trade increased significantly with the share of CO₂ emissions induced by traditional trade in intermediate products always representing a major proportion but which still underwent a downward trend. Interregional trade activities increase China's CO₂ emissions, and the PHH holds at the national level. Among them, trade in final products is conducive to reducing national CO₂ emissions while the other three patterns of interregional trade are opposite. In particular, the balance of avoided CO₂ emissions (BAC) in trade related to the DVC is positive, meaning that the DVC is polluting. In addition, domestic trade activities of the central region, northwestern region, and northern coast are not conducive to reducing regional and national CO₂ emissions while the southern coast and northeastern region are opposite.
