Self-assembling of 3D layered flower architecture of BiOI modified MgCr2O4 nanosphere for wider spectrum visible-light photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B and malachite green: Mechanism, pathway, reactive sites and toxicity prediction

Rhodamine B, an organic environmental pollutant induces reproductive toxicity in parental and teratogenicity in F1 generation in vivo

This study investigated the reproductive toxicity of rhodamine B in zebrafish and its transgenerational effects on the F1 generation. In silico toxicity predictions revealed high toxicity of rhodamine B, mainly targeting pathways associated with the reproductive and endocrine systems. In vivo experiments on zebrafish demonstrated that rhodamine B exposure at a concentration of 1.5 mg/L led to significant impairments in fecundity parameters, particularly affecting females. Histopathological analysis revealed distinct changes in reproductive organs, further confirming the reproductive toxicity of rhodamine B, with females being more susceptible than males. Gene expression studies indicated significant suppression of genes crucial for ovulation in rhodamine B-treated female fish, highlighting hormonal imbalance as a potential mechanism of reproductive toxicity. Furthermore, bioaccumulation studies showed the presence of rhodamine B in both adult fish gonads and F1 generation samples, suggesting transgenerational transfer of the dye. Embryotoxicity studies on F1 generation larvae demonstrated reduced survival rates, lower hatching rates, and increased malformations in groups exposed to rhodamine B. Moreover, rhodamine B induced oxidative stress in F1 generation larvae, as evidenced by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species and altered antioxidant enzyme activity. Neurotoxicity assessments revealed reduced acetylcholinesterase activity, indicating potential neurological impairments in F1 generation larvae. Additionally, locomotory defects and skeletal abnormalities were observed in F1 generation larvae exposed to rhodamine B. This study provides comprehensive evidence of the reproductive toxicity of rhodamine B in adult zebrafish and its transgenerational effects on the F1 generation.

Effective removal of malachite green oxalate from aqueous solution using Newbouldia laevis husk/MWCNTs nanocomposite: equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics

The discharge of colored effluent into water bodies is a big concern; hence, the current work was designed to fabricate a superior nanocomposite (NBM) using the Newbouldia laevis husk (NB) and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) for the adsorption of malachite green oxalate (MGO). Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface analysis was used to assess the specific surface area of NB (0.7699 m2 g-1) and NBM (94.006 m2 g-1). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to determine the chemical moieties on the surface of the adsorbent. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to analyze the surface morphology and the thermal behavior of the adsorbents. Essential factors of the adsorption process were investigated, and it was revealed that pH 6.0, adsorbent dose of 0.05 g, contact time 80 min, concentration of 100 mg dm-3 and maximum adsorption capacity of 35.78 mg g-1 (NB) and 69.97 mg g-1 (NBM) were the optimal parameters. The NB and NBM adsorption processes followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The exothermic and endothermic adsorptive processes were noticed to be the best descriptions of MGO elimination by NB and NBM, respectively. The uptake of MGO by NB and NBM was best described by models of Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. Besides, NBM demonstrated uptake efficiency that is >80% after the fourth adsorption/desorption cycle. As a result, NBM has a wide range of possible uses in environmental remediation.

Structural regulatory mechanism of phosphotungstate acid decorated graphene oxide quantum dots-chitosan aerogel and its application in ciprofloxacin degradation

Chitosan modified AGQD (amine modified graphene oxide quantum dots) and then combined with H₃PW₁₂O₄₀ to obtain CS_x@AGQD-HPW₁₂ via facile process and applied for CIP removal through pre-adsorption and photocatalytic processes. The application of chitosan could regulate the morphology and photoelectric properties effectively. CS_0.5@AGQD-HPW₁₂ was found to have the optimal CIP removal performance among all the products, the corresponding adsorption removal efficiency and pre-adsorption photocatalysis process were 72.1 % and 98.8 %, respectively. Results of toxicity assessment confirmed photocatalytic degradation process could mitigate the ecotoxicity of CIP effectively. The optimal TOC (total organic carbon) removal efficiency was about 52.1 %. Possible pathways for CIP degradation and reaction mechanism were proposed based on the results of intermediates analysis and trapping experiments. This demonstrated a novel approach to chitosan application and an eco-friendly way to remove CIP by adsorption-photocatalysis process.

Ag2NCN anchored on Ti3C2Tx MXene as a Schottky heterojunction: enhanced visible light photocatalytic efficiency of rhodamine B degradation

The quick charge recombination of light-generated electrons and holes severely restricts the photocatalytic applications of single semiconductors. Here, a straightforward electrostatically driven self-assembly technique was used to construct an Ag₂NCN/Ti₃C₂T_x Schottky heterojunction, which was then used to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) in the illumination of visible light. The findings from the experiments revealed that as a cocatalyst, Ti₃C₂T_x significantly suppresses the recombination rate and broadens visible absorptivity to improve Ag₂NCN photocatalytic efficiency. The optimized Ag₂NCN/Ti₃C₂T_x (AT2) composite exhibited an outstanding photocatalytic rate in 96 min, with the highest RhB degradation rate (k = 0.029 min^-1), which was around fifteen times that of pure Ag₂NCN (k = 0.002 min^-1). Furthermore, the trapping-agent experiment showed photogenerated superoxide radicals and holes were the principal active agents inside the photodegradation of RhB. Compared with Ag-based semiconductors, the composite exhibited outstanding photostability, highlighting its excellent potential for application in visible-light photocatalysis.

Sunlit photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant by NiCr2O4/Bi2S3/Cr2S3 tracheid skeleton nanocomposite: Mechanism, pathway, reactive sites, genotoxicity and byproduct toxicity evaluation

In this study, 3D C₂S₃ (CS) and 2D Bi₂S₃ (BS) modified NiCr₂O₄ nanocomposite (NCO-BS-CS NCs) was prepared by sonochemical assisted co-precipitation method for the enhanced photocatalytic activity. Here, NCO-BS-CS NCs showed band gap energy of 2.23 eV and the PL intensity of NCO-BS-CS NCs was lower than NCO, BS, and CS NPs. Thus, the results indicate the fabricated NCO-BS-CS NCs enhance the charge segregation and lower in recombination rate. NCO-BS-CS NCs showed enhanced photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) (95%) and congo red (CR) (99.7%) respectively. The total organic compound (TOC) analysis shows the complete mineralization of about 91 and 98% for MO and CR respectively. Furthermore, the Fukui function was used for the prediction of reactive sites in the photodegradation pathway of MO and CR by NCs. ECOSAR program was done to determine the toxicity of the intermediate and the results conclude that the degraded product shows nontoxic to the environmental organism (fish, daphnia, and algae). Thus, the fabricated NCO-BS-CS NCs can be used for the remediation of toxic organic pollutants from the waste water by photocatalytic degradation.

The application of photoelectrocatalysis in the degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous solutions: a review

The pollution of the water environment by industrial effluents is an ongoing challenge due to the rate of industrialisation and globalisation. Photoelectrocatalysis (PEC), an electrochemical advanced oxidation process, has proven to be an effective method for removing organics from wastewater. Photoelectrocatalysis is environmentally benign, cost-effective and easy to operate. In this present review, we examine the recent progress in the removal of rhodamine B dye, a common constituent of textile effluent released into the environment, through photoelectrocatalytic degradation. We present a detailed discussion on the use of different kinds of unmodified and modified photoanodes that have been explored for the photoelectrocatalytic removal of this dye. More importantly, discussions are presented on the mechanisms and kinetics of the degradation of rhodamine B dye using these photoanodes. Hence, this review will be beneficial for researchers in developing future projects in the area of wastewater treatments through photoelectrocatalysis.

Photodegradation of 5-flurouracil, carvedilol, para-chlorophenol and methimazole with 3D MnWO4 nanoflower modified Ag2WO4 nanorods: A non-genotoxic nanomaterial for water treatment

The present study focused on the photocatalytic degradation of 5-Flurouracil (FU), carvedilol (Car), para-chlorophenol (PCP) and methimazole (Met) under visible light irradiation by MnWO₄/Ag₂WO₄ (MWO/AWO) nanohybrid. Here, MWO/AWO nanohybrid was characterized by XRD, TEM, EDS, XPS, ESR, EIS, BET and DRS. The band gap energy of the MWO/AWO nanohybrid was found to be 2.75 eV, which enables effective photocatalytic activity of nanohybrid under visible light. The photocatalytic degradation of various PhACs such as Fu, Car, PCP and Met was found to be 98.8, 100, 98 and 98.1% respectively. The degradation efficiency of the MWO/AWO nanohybrid on various PhACs was higher than the pure MWO and AWO nanoparticle. The effective formation of OH• and •O₂ by MWO/AWO nanohybrid played an important role in degradation of PhACs and it was determined by radical scavenging experiment. Further, the intermediates formed during the photocatalytic process were analyzed by GC-MS/MS to elucidate the photodegradation pathway and the results reveal the complete mineralization of the PhACs. The toxicity of the degraded product was performed against on Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli where it shows that the nanohybrid possesses high relative growth inhibition than AWO and MWO nanoparticles. In addition, the genotoxicity of the nanohybrid against Allium cepa was performed and it exhibited lower toxicity. The synthesized nanohybrid proves to be an excellent photocatalyst with good stability, reusability, eco-friendly, and cost-effective material for implementation in practical applications.
