Climate change mitigation role of renewable energy consumption: Does institutional quality matter in the case of reducing Africa's carbon dioxide emissions?

Navigating the impact of remittances on environmental quality in Africa: The crucial role of institutional quality

The Sub-Saharan African (SSA) region remains the world's largest recipient of remittances. Due to growing concerns over climate change issues, recent studies have examined how these financial flows have affected environmental quality. Sundry variables were controlled in such studies concerning the remittances-environment nexus, including institutional quality. Notwithstanding that remittance and institutional quality are imperative, their combined effect on environmental quality has been overlooked. The present study has inspected how remittances and institutional quality have jointly influenced environmental quality in 44 economies in the SSA region between 2000 and 2022. Using PMG-ARDL analysis, the findings revealed that remittances had a negative long-term impact on environmental quality. Conversely, the study found that institutional quality positively affected the per capita ecological footprints, as measured by the six indicators' average. Furthermore, the results indicated that improvements in institutional quality over time mitigated the adverse impact of remittances on the environment in the sampled SSA countries. Additionally, a threshold level of institutional quality effectively moderates remittances' detrimental effects on environmental quality were identified. Therefore, most regional countries must enhance their institutional quality to mitigate the negative environmental impact of remittances.

Determinants of carbon emissions in Kenya and policy implications

Carbon dioxide emissions are the primary greenhouse gasses behind global climate change and its associated effects. Climate change adversely impacts the environment, biodiversity, and human health. The ability to tame carbon dioxide emissions will help in the fight against climate change. However, the recent pace of rising carbon dioxide emissions raises concerns about winning the war against climate change. World leaders are determined to take actions that will lower emissions. Thus, there is a worldwide effort to achieve net-zero emissions. Consequently, it is crucial to comprehend the specific factors that contribute to carbon emissions of specific economies so that countries can develop and enforce effective strategies for reducing carbon output, mitigating the effects of climate change, and improving recovery programs. Despite many empirical studies conducted in Africa on the determinants of carbon emissions, the results remain inconclusive and inadequate, leaving a void for further research. This study seeks to fill this knowledge gap by modeling the relationship between Kenya's carbon emissions (which have been increasing since the early 2000s), and mobile technology adoption, renewable energy mix, tourism development, development assistance, income, and global financial crises, utilizing the most current data from 1995 to 2021 from the World Bank's database. The ARDL, FMOLS, CCR, and DOLS analysis results reveal that mobile technology, tourism, development aid, and global financial crises increase Kenya's carbon emissions in the long run. At the same time, income and renewable energy reduce short- and long-term impacts. The significant insight from these results is that enhancing renewable energy development, mobile technology, and development assistance can promote a sustainable environment. From these findings, the study proposes many policy recommendations to help decision-makers, communities, companies, and the government in Kenya allocate resources and implement resilience and mitigation policies and programs in the areas most susceptible to the effects of climate change.

The Impact of Renewable Energy Development on Regional Carbon Emission Reduction: Based on the Spatio-Temporal Analysis of 30 Provinces in China

The development of renewable energy has become an important means for the world to cope with climate change, ensure energy security, and protect the ecological environment. Using the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2013 to 2021, this study used the mediating effect model and the spatial Durbin model (SDM) to explore the mechanism and spatial effects of renewable energy development on China's regional carbon emission reduction. The results show that: (1) Renewable energy development can help to reduce carbon emission intensity. (2) The results of mechanism analysis show that renewable energy development reduces carbon intensity by improving energy structure, promoting industrial structure optimization, and industrial structure upgrading. (3) The development of renewable energy can not only reduce the local carbon intensity but also have a positive spillover effect on the carbon intensity of neighboring regions. (4) Further analysis shows that the long-term effect of renewable energy development on carbon emissions is greater than the short-term effect. At the same time, the heterogeneity analysis shows that compared with the Yellow River basin, the development of renewable energy has a significant carbon emission reduction effect in the Yangtze River Economic Belt region. Energy-rich areas fall into the "resource curse", which makes the carbon emission reduction effect of renewable energy development not significant. This paper has certain reference significance for promoting reasonable decomposition between regions and formulating renewable energy development policies.

Recent advances in nanomaterial-stabilized pickering foam: Mechanism, classification, properties, and applications

Pickering foam is a type of foam stabilized by solid particles known as Pickering stabilizers. These solid stabilizers adsorb at the liquid-gas interface, providing superior stability to the foam. Because of its high stability, controllability, versatility, and minimal environmental impact, nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam has opened up new possibilities and development prospects for foam applications. This review provides an overview of the current state of development of Pickering foam stabilized by a wide range of nanomaterials, including cellulose nanomaterials, chitin nanomaterials, silica nanoparticles, protein nanoparticles, clay mineral, carbon nanotubes, calcium carbonate nanoparticles, MXene, and graphene oxide nanosheets. Particularly, the preparation and surface modification methods of various nanoparticles, the fundamental properties of nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam, and the synergistic effects between nanoparticles and surfactants, functional polymers, and other additives are systematically introduced. In addition, the latest progress in the application of nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam in the oil industry, food industry, porous functional material, and foam flotation field is highlighted. Finally, the future prospects of nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam in different fields, along with directions for further research and development directions, are outlined.

Examining the dynamic impact of carbon emissions, renewable energy and economic growth on healthcare expenditure in Asian countries

This study aims to examine the impact of renewable energy, carbon emissions, and economic growth on healthcare spending in 36 Asian countries during 2000-2019. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS) models have been applied to the panel data for 36 Asian countries. The study's findings show that CO2 emissions in Asia increased due to public and private health spending, with the commercial health sector having a larger negative influence on CO2 emissions than the public sector. According to FMOLS and DOLS findings, carbon emissions and GDP are positively related to health spending, indicating that high economic growth through energy-intensive production processes leads to increased carbon emissions, but on the contrary, renewable energy consumption has decreased healthcare expenditure. This study advocates new policies to reduce carbon emissions and hospitalisation without jeopardising national economic growth. In order to achieve sustainable health services and an environmentally friendly future in Asia, health administrators must raise state and private healthcare spending while implementing an effective cost-service and energy-efficient management plan.

Determinants of fishing grounds footprint: Evidence from dynamic spatial Durbin model

Despite a growing literature on fishing grounds footprint, there is no study analyzing fishing footprint regarding spatial effects between neighboring countries. Thus, we explored whether the fishing grounds footprint of 156 countries is spatially correlated. For this purpose, we applied the dynamic spatial Durbin model to examine the direct and indirect effects of GDP per capita, biological capacity, trade openness, population, and urbanization on fishing grounds footprint in the short-term and the long-term during 2001-2021. The results revealed that: (1) there exists a positive and significant spatial dependence in fishing grounds footprint between countries; (2) inverted U-shaped environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis is valid in the short-term and the long-term; (3) fishing grounds footprint is negatively influenced by biocapacity and urbanization in neighboring countries, while population directly increases the fishing footprint. Finally, some suggestions were put forward to reduce fishing grounds footprint and to achieve a sustainable fisheries environment.

The adoption of renewable energy towards environmental sustainability: Evidence from Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM)

The effect of carbon emissions on the environment has made some of the Sustainable Development Goals difficult to achieve. Despite the efforts of international bodies, there is still a need to address the problem since the transition is not complete. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of globalization, economic growth, financial inclusion, renewable energy, and government institutions on carbon emissions from the period of 1998 to 2021. To be able to assess both the direct and indirect effects of the variables, the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling is employed, where renewable energy serves as the mediator, and the Two-Stage Least Squares is employed as the robustness check. The findings of the study reveal that globalization promotes the use of renewable energy, but financial inclusion has a negative effect on renewable energy use. Renewable energy has a direct positive and significant effect on carbon emissions. Financial inclusion has an indirect negative and significant effect on carbon emissions. The results imply that more enlightenment on financial inclusion will help a smooth transition, and globalization should be embraced when all environmental regulations are enforced.

Assessing the impact of geopolitical, economic, and institutional factors on China's environmental management in the Russian-Ukraine conflicting era

In contemporary times, geopolitical risk, and natural resources prices are susceptible due to the Russian-Ukraine conflict. In the meantime, emerging economies are struggling to explore the factors that could reduce ecological challenges and enhance environmental management. This research aims to analyze several economic, environmental, political, and institutional variables to ascertain their influence on greenhouse gas emissions in China. Covering the latest period from 1990 to 2022, various time series tests, including normality, stationarity, and cointegration tests. The results confirm that the variables studied have a stable pattern over time and are connected in the long run. The non-normal distribution of variables leads to opt novel moment quantile regression, where the results are tested for robustness via parametric approaches. The empirical results asserted that economic growth, natural resource prices, and trade significantly enhance ecological challenges (emissions). However, globalization, geopolitical risk, and institutional quality significantly reduce such environmental challenges. The results are robust, and both unidirectional and bidirectional causal associations confirm the importance of these variables in environmental management. Based on the results, this study recommends engagement in environmentally-friendly trading, investment in clean and green energy, and strengthening institutional quality for the region's environmental recovery.

Renewable energy, inequality and environmental degradation

The connection between income inequality and environmental degradation remains a topic of persistent debate, marked by inconsistencies in both theoretical and empirical studies. This study offers a novel contribution to this discourse by investigating the simultaneous influences of renewable energy and income inequality on environmental degradation. Utilizing data from 158 nations from 2000 to 2017, our research reveals a crucial moderating role of renewable energy in the nexus between income inequality and environmental degradation. The study's key finding is that the impact of income inequality on environmental degradation is contingent on the level of renewable energy development. In scenarios with limited renewable energy, income equality leads to increased environmental degradation. However, when renewable energy is more developed, income equality contributes to reducing environmental degradation. This novel insight suggests that renewable energy development can mitigate the trade-off between pursuing income equality and environmental sustainability, thereby enabling their simultaneous achievement. The research also highlights that a more equitable income distribution enhances the environmental benefits of renewable energy. Further analysis demonstrates the significant role played by household consumption behavior and social norms in shaping this phenomenon. By adding these new dimensions to the existing literature, the study significantly enriches the understanding of the complex interplay among economic factors, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability.

Evaluating the roles of energy innovation, fossil fuel costs and environmental compliance towards energy transition in advanced industrial economies

Given the dire state of climate change, investigating key elements that impact the energy transition process and help monitor progress in greenhouse gas emissions to achieve environmental sustainability is of critical importance. The current study explores the association between energy transition, compliance with environmental agreements, fossil fuels costs, environmental technologies, economic growth, and environmental degradation in G20 economies from 1995 to 2019. Our findings from extensive econometric analysis reveal that economic growth, environmental innovation, renewable energy, and environmental compliance facilitate while fossil fuels and environmental degradation hinder the energy transition process. Our findings conclude that developed countries must focus on alternate energy resources to overcome environmental challenges and subsidize renewable energy and environmental technologies to replace fossil fuels with green energy resources methodologically. Further, policy measures have been discussed in detail in the study.

Democracy, information, and communication technology infrastructure and environmental quality

Environmental degradation is an urgent global concern. While previous studies acknowledge the substantial effects of both democracy and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on environmental quality, their joint effects remain underexplored. Addressing this gap, our research investigates the individual and synergistic effects of democracy and ICT infrastructure on environmental quality. Utilizing the system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator, we assess a panel dataset from 152 countries between 2003 and 2019. Our results indicate that both democracy and ICT infrastructure advancements substantially improve environmental quality. Furthermore, an enhanced ICT infrastructure augments the positive effects of democratic practices on the environment and vice versa. However, when ICT infrastructure is insufficient, the positive influence of democratic systems on the environment becomes negligible, and similarly, without a solid democratic foundation, the benefits of ICT infrastructure on environmental quality are diminished. This underscores a synergistic relationship between democracy and ICT in fostering sustainable environmental progress. Consequently, our study offers significant insights into the multifaceted interplay between democracy, ICT infrastructure, and the environment.

Investigating the fishing grounds load capacity curve in G7 nations: Evaluating the influence of human capital and renewable energy use

This paper introduces a novel approach to explore marine ecosystem by examining the Fishing Grounds Load Capacity Curve (FGLCC) hypothesis. The study investigates the impact of income on the marine condition in G7 nations from 1970 to 2019 by exploring the U-shaped relationship between income and the Fishing Grounds Load Capacity Factor (FGLCF). This research diverges from previous studies focused solely on the demand side through fishing footprints, as it considers the neglected aspect of the marine supply side. Furthermore, it explores the influence of renewable energies and human capital as indicators inversely related to non-renewable energy use and population on the marine condition. The findings reveal the U-shaped FGLCC hypothesis. Additionally, the results demonstrate that renewable energies and human capital have a positive impact on the marine ecosystem. These outcomes provide valuable insights for decision-makers, enabling them to identify key variables that contribute to the preservation of marine diversity.
