Water uptake of multicomponent organic mixtures and their influence on hygroscopicity of inorganic salts

Optical manipulation and fusion of aqueous droplets containing inorganic and organic solutes in air using the dual-beam laser trapping technique

The comparative evaluation of two aerosol droplets of different chemical compositions using the dual-beam laser trapping technique can be employed for highly sensitive and accurate measurements of the water activities of such droplets. However, it is technically difficult to load droplets of different chemical compositions into adjacent optical traps that are only a few tens of micrometers apart. To overcome this challenge, a chamber with an overhanging roof was created. This roof prevented the initially trapped droplets from being contaminated by aerosol droplets that were subsequently introduced into the chamber. Herein, we report the simultaneous laser trapping of an aqueous ammonium sulfate (AS) droplet and an aqueous succinic acid (SA) droplet in air using the dual-beam laser trapping technique. Two droplets were successfully fused through optical manipulation to form a mixed inorganic/organic droplet in air. This experimental approach is advantageous because it forms mixed inorganic/organic droplets under constant relative humidity (RH) conditions. However, in previous studies, it was necessary to compensate for changes in RH prior to and after droplet fusion. To assess the validity of theoretical predictions of the water activity of droplets containing AS and SA, the equilibrium radii of the droplet were compared with those calculated using certain theoretical models.

Interaction of cesium bound fission product compounds (CsI and CsOH) with abundant inorganic compounds of atmosphere: Effect on hygroscopic growth properties

Cesium compounds if present in atmosphere, can affect human health as well as the ecosystem due to their highly hazardous nature. Interaction of cesium compounds with abundantly available atmospheric salts can modify the hygroscopic behavior in sub-saturation relative humidity (RH) domain. Any marked modification in growth factor (GF) for the mixed particle state in comparison to the single particles ultimately affects the settling rates and hence the deposition flux. This work studies the hygroscopic behavior of two important cesium bound fission product aerosols (CsI, CsOH) internally mixed with some common atmospheric particles viz. [Formula: see text] and NaNO₃ for a fixed dry particle size of 100 nm. Experimental measurements, performed with Hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer in the range of 20-94% RH, have been compared with the predictions made from Zdanovskii-Stokes-Robinson (ZSR) approach. Apart from the single/pure particle state for the constituents (i.e. mixing ratios 1:0 and 0:1), three other mixing ratios 1:4, 1:1 and 4:1 have been considered. The results show that the GF vs RH pattern for mixed particles is different from that for single CsI and CsOH particles. The intrinsic water uptake behavior for these cesium compounds was found to be perturbed for some of the chosen combinations as well. Deliquescent transition for the mixed particles was observed at lower RH compared to the single electrolytes. Relative differences noticeable for the chosen mixing ratios could be related to the available fractions in the mixed state. Overall, ZSR method was found to be capturing the trend of increasing GFs with increasing RH. Terminal gravitational settling velocities calculated from the measured GFs were also found to be different for single and mixed particles. The relative difference was significant for some combinations and test conditions. Any modification in settling velocity ultimately impacts the deposition flux estimations. Hence neglecting the presence of atmospheric salts affects the accuracy of the source term estimates for a postulated nuclear reactor accident scenario.

Complexity of Measuring and Representing the Hygroscopicity of Mixed Component Aerosol

The validation of approaches to predict the hygroscopicity of complex mixtures of organic components in aerosol is important for understanding the hygroscopic response of organic aerosol in the atmosphere. We report new measurements of the hygroscopicity of mixtures of dicarboxylic acids and amino acids using a comparative kinetic electrodynamic balance (CK-EDB) approach, inferring the equilibrium water content of the aerosol from close to a saturation relative humidity (100%) down to 80%. We show that the solution densities and refractive indices of the mixtures can be estimated with an accuracy of better than ±2% using the molar refractive index mixing rule and densities and refractive indices for the individual binary organic-aqueous solutions. Further, we show that the often-used mass-, volume-, and mole-weighted mixing rules to estimate the hygroscopicity parameter κ can overestimate the hygroscopic parameter by a factor of as much as 3, highlighting the need to understand the specific nonideal interactions that may arise synergistically in mixtures and cannot be represented by simple models. Indeed, in some extreme cases the hygroscopicity of a multicomponent mixture can be very close to that for the least hygroscopic component. For mixtures of similar components for which no additional synergistic interactions need be considered, the hygroscopicity of the mixed component aerosol can be estimated with high accuracy from the hygroscopic response of the binary aqueous-organic aerosol. In conclusion, we suggest that the hygroscopicity of multicomponent organic aerosol can be highly nonadditive and that simple correlations of hygroscopicity with composition may often misrepresent the level of complexity essential to interpreting aerosol hygroscopicity.

Atmospheric HULIS and its ability to mediate the reactive oxygen species (ROS): A review

Atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS) are not only an unresolved mixture of macro-organic compounds but also powerful chelating agents in atmospheric particulate matters (PMs); impacting on both the properties of aerosol particles and health effects by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Currently, the interests of HULIS are intensively shifting to the investigations of HULIS-metal synergic effects and kinetics modeling studies, as well as the development of HULIS quantification, findings of possible HULIS sources and generation of ROS from HULIS. In light of HULIS studies, we comprehensively review the current knowledge of isolation and physicochemical characterization of HULIS from atmospheric samples as well as HULIS properties (hygroscopic, surface activity, and colloidal) and possible sources of HULIS. This review mainly highlights the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from PMs, HULIS and transition metals, especially iron. This review also summarized the mechanism of iron-organic complexation and recent findings of OH formation from HULIS-metal complexes. This review will be helpful to carry out the modeling studies that concern with HULIS-transition metals and for further studies in the generation of ROS from HULIS-metal complexes.
