Stability of Fe-As composites formed with As(V) and aged ferrihydrite

Divergent redistribution behavior of divalent metal cations associated with Fe(II)-mediated jarosite phase transformation

The Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle is an important driving force for dissolution and transformation of jarosite. Divalent heavy metals usually coexist with jarosite; however, their effects on Fe(II)-induced jarosite transformation and different repartitioning behavior during mineral dissolution-recrystallization are still unclear. Here, we investigated Fe(II)-induced (1 mM Fe(II)) jarosite conversion in the presence of Cd(II), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) (denoted as Me(II), 1 mM), respectively, under anaerobic condition at neutral pH. The results showed that all co-existing Me(II) retarded Fe(II)-induced jarosite dissolution. In the Fe(II)-only system, jarosite first rapidly transformed to lepidocrocite (an intermediate product) and then slowly to goethite; lepidocrocite was the main product. In Fe(II)-Cd(II), -Mn(II), and -Pb(II) systems, coexisting Cd(II), Mn(II) and Pb(II) retarded the above process and lepidocrocite was still the dominant conversion product. In Fe(II)-Co(II) system, coexisting Co(II) promoted lepidocrocite transformation into goethite. In Fe(II)-Ni(II) system, jarosite appeared to be directly converted into goethite, although small amounts of lepidocrocite were detected in the final product. In all treatments, the appearance or accumulation of lepidocrocite may be also related to the re-adsorption of released sulfate. By the end of reaction, 6.0 %, 4.0 %, 76.0 % 11.3 % and 19.2 % of total Cd(II), Mn(II), Pb(II) Co(II) and Ni(II) were adsorbed on the surface of solid products. Up to 49.6 %, 44.3 %, and 21.6 % of Co(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II) incorporated into solid product, with the reaction indicating that the dynamic process of Fe(II) interaction with goethite may promote the continuous incorporation of Co(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II).

Deep-dive into iron-based co-precipitation of arsenic: A review of mechanisms derived from synchrotron techniques and implications for groundwater treatment

The co-precipitation of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides with arsenic (As) is one of the most widespread approaches to treat As-contaminated groundwater in both low- and high-income settings. Fe-based co-precipitation of As occurs in a variety of conventional and decentralized treatment schemes, including aeration and sand filtration, ferric chloride addition and technologies based on controlled corrosion of Fe(0) (i.e., electrocoagulation). Despite its ease of deployment, Fe-based co-precipitation of As entails a complex series of chemical reactions that often occur simultaneously, including electron-transfer reactions, mineral nucleation, crystal growth, and As sorption. In recent years, the growing use of sophisticated synchrotron-based characterization techniques in water treatment research has generated new detailed and mechanistic insights into the reactions that govern As removal efficiency. The purpose of this critical review is to synthesize the current understanding of the molecular-scale reaction pathways of As co-precipitation with Fe(III), where the source of Fe(III) can be ferric chloride solutions or oxidized Fe(II) sourced from natural Fe(II) in groundwater, ferrous salts or controlled Fe(0) corrosion. We draw primarily on the mechanistic knowledge gained from spectroscopic and nano-scale investigations. We begin by describing the least complex reactions relevant in these conditions (Fe(II) oxidation, Fe(III) polymerization, As sorption in single-solute systems) and build to multi-solute systems containing common groundwater ions that can alter the pathways of As uptake during Fe(III) co-precipitation (Ca, Mg bivalent cations; P, Si oxyanions). We conclude the review by providing a perspective on critical knowledge gaps remaining in this field and new research directions that can further improve the understanding of As removal via Fe(III) co-precipitation.

Divergent repartitioning of antimony and arsenic during jarosite transformation: A comparative study under aerobic and anaerobic conditions

Jarosite is the host mineral of Sb(V) and As(V) in mining environments. However, the repartitioning of Sb and As during its transformation is poorly understood. Additionally, the mutual effect between the redistribution behavior of As and Sb during jarosite conversion remains unclear. Here, we investigated the transformation of Sb(V)-, As(V)- and Sb(V)-As(V)-jarosite at pH 5.5 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions without a reductant. The results indicated that co-precipitated Sb(V) promotes jarosite dissolution, and the final products were mainly goethite and hematite. In contrast, the co-precipitated As(V) retarded jarosite dissolution and altered the transformation pathway, mainly forming lepidocrocite, which might be attributed to the formation of As-Fe complexes on the jarosite surface. The inhibiting or promoting effect increased with the increase in co-precipitated As or Sb concentration. In the treatment with Sb(V)-As(V)-jarosite, the inhibition effect of co-precipitated As(V) on mineral dissolution was predominant, but the end-products were mainly goethite and hematite. Compared with the aerobic system, the dissolution and transformation of jarosite in treatments in the anaerobic system occurred faster, although without a reductant, which was possibly associated with the reduced CO2 content in the reaction solutions after degassing. In all treatments, the release of Sb(aq) and As(aq) into the solution was negligible during jarosite transformation. The transformation processes drove As into the surface-bound exchangeable and poorly crystalline phases, while Sb was typically redistributed in the poorly crystalline phase. During the transformation of Sb(V)-As(V)-jarosite, the co-existence of As significantly increased the proportion of Sb distributed on the solid surface and in the poorly crystalline phase. These findings are valuable for predicting the long-term fate of Sb and As in mining environments.

Removal and environmentally safe disposal of As(III) and As(V)-loaded ferrihydrite/biosilica composites

Pure ferrihydrite and ferrihydrite-biosilica composite were synthesized and studied for the removal of As(III) and As(V). The synthesized materials have an adsorption capacity higher than some reported materials in the literature - 140 and 90 mg g^-1 for As(III) and As(V), respectively. The pH of the solution was shown to impact greatly on As(V) adsorption, but not on As (III), which is stable as a protonated, uncharged oxyanion, at pH < 9.2. The adsorption products were subjected to thermal treatment (500 °C for 2 h), promoting ferric arsenate formation. The adsorbed As on ferrihydrite (Fh) was shown to inhibit the phase transformation of Fh to hematite. More so, thermal treatment was shown to oxidize As(III) to As (V). The changes in the adsorption residues after thermal treatment also had an impact on As mobility. The As (III) associated with the Fh phase increased from 42 to 95%, according to a sequential extraction protocol. Therefore, this work presents a process for As removal, followed by thermal treatment of arsenic-loaded ferrihydrites which enables environmentally safe disposal of As residues.

Hydrous ferric oxides (HFO's) precipitated from contaminated waters at several abandoned Sb deposits - Interdisciplinary assessment

The presented paper represents a comprehensive analysis of ochre sediments precipitated from Fe rich drainage waters contaminated by arsenic and antimony. Ochre samples from three abandoned Sb deposits were collected in three different seasons and were characterized from the mineralogical, geochemical, and microbiological point of view. They were formed mainly by poorly crystallized 2-line ferrihydrite, with the content of arsenic in samples ranging from 7 g·kg^-1 to 130 g·kg^-1 and content of antimony ranging from 0.25 g·kg^-1 up to 12 g·kg^-1. Next-generation sequencing approach with 16S RNA, 18S RNA and ITS markers was used to characterize bacterial, fungal, algal, metazoal and protozoal communities occurring in the HFOs. In the 16S RNA, the analysis dominated bacteria (96.2%) were mainly Proteobacteria (68.8%) and Bacteroidetes (10.2%) and to less extent also Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, Nitrosprae and Chloroflexi. Alpha and beta diversity analysis revealed that the bacterial communities of individual sites do not differ significantly, and only subtle seasonal changes were observed. In this As and Sb rich, circumneutral microenvironment, rich in iron, sulfates and carbonates, methylotrophic bacteria (Methylobacter, Methylotenera), metal/reducing bacteria (Geobacter, Rhodoferax), metal-oxidizing and denitrifying bacteria (Gallionella, Azospira, Sphingopyxis, Leptothrix and Dechloromonas), sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (Sulfuricurvum, Desulphobulbaceae) and nitrifying bacteria (Nitrospira, Nitrosospira) accounted for the most dominant ecological groups and their impact over Fe, As, Sb, sulfur and nitrogen geocycles is discussed. This study provides evidence of diverse microbial communities that exist in drainage waters and are highly important in the process of mobilization or immobilization of the potentially toxic elements.

Simultaneous mitigation of Cd and As availability in soil-rice continuum via the addition of an Fe-based desulfurization material

The simultaneous mitigation of toxic arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in rice grain remains a global challenge. Passivation with natural or artificially modified materials has shown great potential to simultaneously reduce the bioavailability of As and Cd in paddy soils. To date, however, limited materials have are available, with unclear underling mechanisms. Here, a natural iron-based desulfurization material is hypothesized to simultaneously mitigate As and Cd availability in paddy soil-rice continuum, since it is rich in calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), Silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), and sulfur (S). The addition of the proposed material promoted rice growth and reduced soil availability of Cd (extracted with 0.01 mg·L^-1 of CaCl₂) by 88.0-89.6% and As (extracted with 0.5 mg·L^-1 of KH₂PO₄) by 37.9-69.9%. Grain Cd was reduced by 26.4-51.6%, whereas that of inorganic As (iAs) by 33.3-42.7%. The increased Fe (by 44.2%) and Mn (by 178.6%) in iron plaque on the root surface were conducive to the reduction of grain Cd and iAs after application. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacities of the proposed material for Cd and As(III) reached 526.31 and 2.67 mg·g^-1, respectively. The coprecipitation with Cd(OH)₂ as a product, Fe-As and Ca-As complexation, and ion exchange of Fe²⁺ released by the material with Cd²⁺ are involved in the mechanisms underlying the available As and Cd reduction. Combining the safety, low-cost, and high accessibility, Fe-based desulfurization material showed great potential for future safe-utilization of As-Cd contaminated paddy soil via passivation.

The stability of poorly crystalline arsenical ferrihydrite after long-term soil suspension incubation

2- Line ferrihydrite (Fh) is widely used as a robust amendment for rapid arsenic removal or remediation in water or soil. However, the poorly crystalline phase of Fh is unstable and leads to arsenic leaching after long-term submergence in reductive aquatic and soil environments. In this study, the synthesized As(V)-bound Fh was characterized by various spectral approaches to investigate the factors that may affect the variation in As(V)-Fh in long-term continuously submerged soil suspensions. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that hematite was the main product and that goethite was the byproduct after 360 d of incubation. Approximately 12-17% and 4-5% Fh were transformed at As/Fe mole ratios of 0.005 and 0.05, respectively. After 360 d of incubation, the hematite morphology was clearly observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the As(V)-Fh surface areas were also decreased by 17.3-27.6% and 11.9-16.6% for As/Fe mole ratios of 0.005 and 0.05, respectively. In a comparison of the two tested soils (soils sampled in Sichuan Province (SC) and Hunan Province (HN)), As(V)-Fh transformed faster in HN soil suspensions, and more hematite and goethite were formed. Furthermore, during the incubation period, As(V) was transformed to As(III), and both species were released into the suspension from the As(V)-Fh surface. It was suggested that soil pH and Fe(II) concentration were key factors controlling the As(V)-Fh transformation process, and the differences between the two soils were due to the different soil pH values and contents of available Fe. Arsenic release was mainly caused by Fh transformation and ligand competition with soil organic matter (SOM).

Interaction between Se(IV) and fulvic acid and its impact on Se(IV) immobility in ferrihydrite-Se(IV) coprecipitates during aging

Selenium (Se) is regarded as a trace element for humans, but it is toxic in excess. In natural environments, the mobility of Se is dominantly controlled by the Se oxyanions with high solubility such as selenite (Se(IV)). Se(IV) is often associated with the omnipresent ferrihydrite and coexisting organic matter. However, there is little information on the dynamic interactions among Se(IV), fulvic acid, and ferrihydrite. This study investigated the influence of fulvic acid on ferrihydrite-Se(IV) coprecipitates (Fh-Se) transformation for 8 days and the subsequent behavior of Se(IV) at varied pH (5.0, 7.5, and 10.0). Results showed that fulvic acid had different effects on Fh-Se transformation at varied pH values. Fh-Se transformation was promoted by fulvic acid at initial pH 5.0 whereas it was inhibited at initial pH 10.0. Interestingly, at initial pH 7.5, Fh-Se transformation was promoted at a low C/Fe ratio while it was suppressed at a high C/Fe ratio. Besides, fulvic acid induced the generation of more extractable Se(IV) at initial pH 5.0 and more coprecipitated Se(IV) at initial pH 7.5 and blocked the release of Se(IV) at initial pH 10.0. Fulvic acid possibly interacted with Se(IV) via carboxyl complexation and weakened the inhibition of Se(IV) on Fh-Se transformation. Thus, fulvic acid increased the transformation rate of Fh-Se. These findings help to uncover the environmental behavior of Se(IV) and organic matter during ferrihydrite transformation.

Contradictory tendency of As(V) releasing from Fe-As complexes: Influence of organic and inorganic anions

The strong ability of ferrihydrite and its aged minerals for fixing arsenate is a key factor in remediating arsenate-polluted environments. It is therefore crucial to clarify the stability of Fe-As complexes and the release conditions for As(V). The As(V) release amount was evaluated and compared in the presence of six representative anions, namely, phosphate, silicate, sulfate, inositol hexaphosphate, citrate, and oxalate. It was found that the As(V) release amount changed with the aging time of ferrihydrite and that this tendency generally followed two rules. These are, longer aging time leads to lower As(V) release (Rule 1), and longer aging time leads to higher As(V) release (Rule 2). Whether Rule 1 or Rule 2 dominated As release depended on the number of surface groups, size of competing anions, and contribution of As(V) re-adsorption. Characterization results using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) provided evidence for the predicted mechanisms of As(V) release under various circumstances. In this work, it was demonstrated that when inorganic anions such as sulfate and silicate are present, ferrihydrite with longer aging time led to decreased As(V) release. When organic anions are present, ferrihydrite with less aging time results in reduced As(V) leaching. For anions such as phosphate, the As(V) release amount in relation to the ferrihydrite aging time depends on the concentration of phosphate ions. Nevertheless, the ligand concentration and As(V) loading rate on ferrihydrite should be simultaneously considered for the rule governing As(V) releasing.

Sorption of arsenate(Ⅴ) to naturally occurring secondary iron minerals formed at different conditions: The relationship between sorption behavior and surface structure

Arsenic (As) is a problematic pollutant that can cause cancer and other chronic diseases due to its potential toxicity. Iron (oxyhydr)oxides can readily sorb As and play important roles in the geochemical cycle of As. Attention has mainly been given to the affinity and mechanism of As sorption by synthetic pure iron (oxyhydr)oxides, and little is known about the relationship between As behavior and multicomponent secondary iron minerals (SIMs) naturally formed in acid mine drainage (AMD). To investigate this relationship, we performed sorption kinetics, isotherm and competitive sorption experiments to investigate As(V) sorption behaviors on naturally formed SIMs harvested from different runoff zones of an abandoned coal mine. Several spectroscopic analyses were used to evaluate the structural and component changes and phase transformation. Three environmental SIMs formed at nascent (n-SIM), transient (t-SIM) and mature (m-SIM) stages were determined to be similar in the element components of Fe, S and O but different in structure. As(V) sorption behaviors on these environmental SIMs followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the sorption extent followed the sequence of n-SIM > t-SIM > m-SIM. As(V) sorption is not significantly influenced by Na⁺/Ca²⁺ concentration or ionic strength except for that of PO₄^3-, and it slightly decreases as the Cr(Ⅲ) concentration increases but increases with increasing Sb(Ⅲ)/(V) concentration. The results of spectral analyses indicate that As(V) immobilization mainly depends on exchange with SO₄^2- and surface complexation, along with the phase transformation of schwertmannite/jarosite to goethite and other phases. These findings are helpful for better understanding the geochemical behaviors of As(V) associated with environmental SIMs.

Defects induced by Al substitution enhance As(V) adsorption on ferrihydrites

An original rationale is proposed to explain the controversial role of aluminum, a common substitutive element in ferrihydrite (Fh), on arsenic adsorption. The adsorption of arsenic on synthetic Al-for-Fe substituted Fh (AlFh) with up to 20 mol% Al was investigated at pH 5 and 8. The reduced interplanar spacings observed by selected area electron diffraction show that all AlFh samples are isomorphically substituted up to 20 mol% Al. A 15 mol% Al incorporation increases the arsenic uptake by 28%. In contrast, the Langmuir binding constants decrease, suggesting weaker bonds. Arsenic uptake reduces by 50% as pH rises from 5 to 8. The Al-for-Fe substitution in ferrihydrite causes structural defects, proton-compensated by OH groups, as indicated by the Vegard rule deviation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrates the increase in the relative amount of surface M-OH sites (45% to 77%) with Al concentration (AlFh-0 to AlFh-20), respectively. The enhanced As(V) uptake was ascribed to the insertion of hydroxyls on the Fh structural defects. Fourier-transformed-infrared spectroscopy showed that the sites modified by Al introduction are involved in As adsorption. These findings help to understand aluminum's role in arsenic adsorption, fixation, and fate in the environment.
