Effect of temperature on cosolvent flooding for the enhanced solubilization and mobilization of NAPLs in porous media

Enhancing remediation of residual DNAPL in multilayer aquifers: Post-injection of alcohol-surfactant-polymer mixtures

Although polymer-surfactant injection is an effective remediation technology for multilayer aquifers contaminated by Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPL), the existence of residual DNAPL after treatment is inevitable. This study evaluates the efficiency of the post-injection of alcohol-surfactant-polymer (ASP) mixtures containing 1-propanol/1-hexanol, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), and xanthan in enhancing remediation of residual DNAPL in layered systems. A range of experimental devices, including batch, rheological measurements, centimetric 1D column, and decametric 2D tank experiments, were employed. Batch experiments revealed that the inclusion of 1-hexanol swelled the DNAPL volume due to alcohol partitioning. Conversely, with only 1-propanol present in the alcohol-surfactant (AS) mixture, DNAPL dissolved in the aqueous phase. The co-presence of 1-hexanol along with 1-propanol in AS mixture favored 1-propanol's partitioning into the DNAPL phase. Column experiments, following primary xanthan-SDBS (XS) injections, demonstrated that ASP mixtures with 1-hexanol (regardless of presence of 1-propanol) underwent a mobilization mechanism. DNAPL appeared in the effluent as an organic phase after the post-injection of 0.3 pore-volumes (PV), by a reduction trend in its density. In contrast, mixtures with solely 1-propanol exhibited a solubilization mechanism, with DNAPL dissolving in the aqueous phase and emerging in the effluent after approximately 1 PV. 2D tank experiments visualized mobilization and solubilization mechanisms in multilayered systems. Post-injection of the ASP mixture with solely 1-propanol led to DNAPL solubilization, demonstrated by a dark zone of varied DNAPL concentrations, followed by a clearer white zone indicating significant DNAPL dissolution. Injecting ASP mixture containing both 1-propanol and 1-hexanol mobilized swollen DNAPL ganglia throughout layers, with these droplets coalescing and migrating to the recovery point. The darkness of mobilized droplets was faded as more DNAPL was recovered. The solubilization ASP mixture enhanced the recovery factor by 0.02 while the mobilization ASP mixture led to a 0.08 increase in the recovery factor.

Surfactant-enhanced in-situ oxidation of DNAPL source zone: Experiments and numerical modeling

In this study we investigate the synergetic effects of combining surfactant-enhanced dissolution with in-situ oxidation of a pool-dominated PCE DNAPL source zone entrapped in porous media. Flow cell flushing experiments packed with silica sand and natural calcareous soil were conducted with a surfactant (Tween 80) and permanganate (MnO4-) used as dissolution and oxidation agents, respectively. The resultant breakthrough curves exhibited a multiple step behavior with mass removal controlled in the latter stages by the less-accessible DNAPL mass. DNAPL spatial architecture, flow-field heterogeneity, and flushing solution all influenced the remediation effort. When taking into account both the surfactant-enhanced dissolution and permanganate oxidation processes, mass-flux reduction/mass-removal behavior relationships indicated that the inclusion of oxidation in the remediation scheme delayed the drop in mass flux from the source zone, leading to improved DNAPL removal efficiency. Numerical modeling was also performed to further evaluate the efficacy of the surfactant-enhanced chemical oxidation of DNAPL PCE with permanganate. The system of reaction equations available in the multiphase flow simulator UTCHEM were adapted to simulate the chemical oxidation process in the presence of a surfactant. The model results yield lower oxidation reaction rate constants in the presence of Tween 80, indicating that Tween 80 can interfere with the reaction rate. However, the increase in the solubility of PCE in the presence of Tween 80 more than compensates for the decrease in reaction rate constant. Overall, for Tween 80/MnO4- applied at sufficient dosages, more efficient DNAPL zone remediation was achieved compared to surfactant flushing or permanganate oxidation alone.

Temperature influence on the NAPL-water interfacial area between 10 °C and 60 °C for trichloroethylene

Underground thermal energy storage (UTES) can contribute to renewable energy usability, especially in urban areas with the most demand and available infrastructure. But UTES may interact in those areas with non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) by increasing the temperature in storage formations. To determine temperature effects on NAPL dissolution rates into groundwater, the effective specific interfacial area (a_nw) between trichloroethylene (TCE) and water, as a function of temperature and TCE pore saturations, was calculated. The interfacial tension between the flushing solution and the NAPL, the adsorption coefficient and the retardation of a reactive tracer were determined by the drop weight method and interfacial tracer tests at 10 °C, 30 °C and 60 °C. From 10 to 60 °C a_nw increased by a factor of six to eight. Based on the results, a function to describe the a_nw between TCE and water was developed, which could improve numerical models on NAPL dissolution rates. The main mechanisms for the increase in a_nw are suggested to be NAPL blob migration on pore scale, and thermal-induced changes in wettability and in blob shape correlating with a temperature-induced decline in effective porosity of up to 32%. These results contribute to the understanding and predictability of UTES in contaminated aquifers, the general response of NAPL behavior on artificial increasing aquifer temperatures and the improvement of thermal and other groundwater remediation techniques.

Assessing the impact of water infiltration on LNAPL mobilization in sand column using simplified image analysis method

Laboratory-scale column experiments were carried out to assess the influence of water infiltration on pooled light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) redistribution in porous media. A simplified image analysis method (SIAM) was used to evaluate the saturation distributions of the LNAPL and water in the entire domain under dynamic conditions. The experiments were conducted for high/low LNAPL volumes LNAPL volumes differentiated as low and high volumes. High resolution SIAM images of the soil column during LNAPL migration and water infiltration events were captured and analyzed. Results indicated that the capillary fringe is about 6-7 cm which was consistent with the capillary height derived from empirical equations. Moreover, SIAM provided an estimate of the field capacity (30%) of the sand. Once the LNAPL infiltration stage was started, the LNAPL was observed to rapidly migrate through the vadose zone. For the case of large LNAPL volume, the LNAPL penetrated further into capillary fringe zone. Analysis of SIAM images showed that the LNAPL redistribution was observed to vary significantly with the rate of infiltration. For higher water infiltration intensity, the injected water exerted a larger hydrodynamic force on the entrapped LNAPL forcing it move further downward into the capillary zone and the saturated zone. Overall, this study demonstrated that the SIAM technique is an accurate and cost-effective tool for the visualization of the time-dependent NAPL/water movement in laboratory-scale experiments and dynamic changes in fluid saturation in porous media.

Soil flushing pilot test in a landfill polluted with liquid organic wastes from lindane production

Sites contaminated by Dense Non-Aqueous Liquid Phases (DNAPLs) containing chlorinated compounds are a ubiquitous problem caused by spills or the dumping of wastes with no concern for the environment. Their migration by gravity through the subsurface and their accumulation far below ground level make in-situ treatments the most appropriate remediation technologies. In this work, an aqueous solution containing a non-ionic and biodegradable surfactant was injected in the Sardas alluvial layer contaminated at some points with DNAPL (formed by a mixture of more than 28 chlorinated compounds) from lindane production. A volume of 5.28 m³ of an aqueous surfactant emulsion (13 g L^-1) was injected at 14.5 m b g.l in the permeable layer (gravel-sand), at a flow rate of 0.6 m³ h^-1 and the groundwater was monitored within a test cell (3.5 m radius) built ad hoc. The flow of the injected fluids in the subsurface was also evaluated using a conservative tracer, bromide (130 mg L^-1), added to the surfactant solution. Concentration of contaminants, chloride, bromide and surfactant, surface tension and conductivity were measured at the injection point and at three monitoring points over time. High radial dispersion was noticed resulting in high dilution of the injected fluids. The surfactant was not adsorbed in the soil during the injection time, the adsorption of the surfactant took place in the meantime (15 h) between its injection and the groundwater (GW) extraction. The concentration of chlorinated compounds dissolved from the soil in the surfactant aqueous phase when equilibrium was reached (about 850 mg L^-1) is related to the moderate average contamination of the soil in the test cell (about 1230 mg kg^-1). In contrast, the extraction of the free DNAPL in the altered marls layer was highly enhanced due to the addition of the surfactant. Finally, it was found that the surfactant and the contamination did not migrate from the capture zone.

Experiments and sensitivity coefficients analysis for multiphase flow model calibration of enhanced DNAPL dissolution

Multiphase flow modeling is often used for the comparison and optimization of subsurface nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) remediation schemes. The calibration of such models is a challenging task due to the lack of detailed data describing the initial NAPL spatial distribution and the processes governing the fate and transport of NAPLs in porous media. In this study laboratory scale experiments were conducted to evaluate reagent-enhanced dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) solubilization in saturated heterogeneous media. The DNAPL consisted of both pooled and residual saturation forms. To gain insight into the influence of various input parameters on effluent concentrations, the multiphase flow program was used to compute the sensitivity coefficients of key parameters, relating to the flow, flushing solution properties, soil parameters, NAPL distribution and mass transfer coefficient. The sensitivity coefficients were, in turn, used to aid in the model calibration and to underline the difficulties associated with the calibration of multiphase flow models, most notably the non-uniqueness of the calibration process when complete information is lacking. To alleviate this uncertainty and provide additional constraints, the conducted flushing experiments were jointly used to calibrate the multiphase flow model. The results of the model calibration suggest that the interphase mass transfer coefficient is dependent on the properties of the reagent aqueous solution used for DNAPL remediation, most notably the viscosity and interfacial tension.

The influence of cosolvent and heat on the solubility and reactivity of organophosphorous pesticide DNAPL alkaline hydrolysis

The presented research concerned the compatibility of cosolvents with in situ alkaline hydrolysis (ISAH) for treatment of organophosphorous (OPP) pesticide contaminated sites. In addition, the influence of moderate temperature heat increments was studied as a possible enhancement method. A complex dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) of primarily parathion (~50 %) and methyl parathion (~15 %) obtained from the Danish Groyne 42 site was used as a contaminant source, and ethanol and propan-2-ol (0, 25, and 50 v/v%) was used as cosolvents in tap water and 0.34 M NaOH. Both cosolvents showed OPP solubility enhancement at 50 v/v% cosolvent content, with slightly higher OPP concentrations reached with propan-2-ol. Data on hydrolysis products did not show a clear trend with respect to alkaline hydrolysis reactivity in the presence of cosolvents. Results indicated that the hydrolysis rate of methyl-parathion (MP3) decreased with addition of cosolvent, whereas the hydrolysis rate of ethyl-parathion (EP3) remained constant, and overall indications were that the hydrolysis reactions were limited by the rate of hydrolysis rather than NAPL dissolution. In addition to cosolvents, the influence of low-temperature heating on ISAH was studied. Increasing reaction temperature from 10 to 30 °C provided an average rate of hydrolysis enhancement by a factor of 1.4-4.8 dependent on the base of calculation. When combining 50 v/v% cosolvent addition and heating to 30 °C, EP3 solubility was significantly enhanced and results for O,O-diethyl-thiophosphoric acid (EP2 acid) showed a significant enhancement of hydrolysis as well. However, this could not be supported by para-nitrophenol (PNP) data indicating the instability of this product in the presence of cosolvent.

Laboratory-scale experiments and numerical modeling of cosolvent flushing of multi-component NAPLs in saturated porous media

This study examines the mechanistic processes governing multiphase flow of a water-cosolvent-NAPL system in saturated porous media. Laboratory batch and column flushing experiments were conducted to determine the equilibrium properties of pure NAPL and synthetically prepared NAPL mixtures as well as NAPL recovery mechanisms for different water-ethanol contents. The effect of contact time was investigated by considering different steady and intermittent flow velocities. A modified version of multiphase flow simulator (UTCHEM) was used to compare the multiphase model simulations with the column experiment results. The effect of employing different grid geometries (1D, 2D, 3D), heterogeneity and different initial NAPL saturation configurations was also examined in the model. It is shown that the change in velocity affects the mass transfer rate between phases as well as the ultimate NAPL recovery percentage. The experiments with low flow rate flushing of pure NAPL and the 3D UTCHEM simulations gave similar effluent concentrations and NAPL cumulative recoveries. Model simulations over-estimated NAPL recovery for high specific discharges and rate-limited mass transfer, suggesting a constant mass transfer coefficient for the entire flushing experiment may not be valid. When multi-component NAPLs are present, the dissolution rate of individual organic compounds (namely, toluene and benzene) into the ethanol-water flushing solution is found not to correlate with their equilibrium solubility values.
