Performance of sludge treatment wetlands using different plant species and porous media

Performance of vertical flow constructed wetland for the treatment of effluent from a brassware industry in city of Fez, Morocco: a laboratory scale study

Brassware industry constitutes the second most polluting industrial sector in Fez city, Morocco, owing to its high heavy metal load. The aim of this study is to examine and evaluate the performance of vertical flow constructed wetlands in treating brassware effluents using various plant species. Ten treatment systems were planted with four types of plants: Chrysopogon zizanioides, Typha latifolia, Phragmites australis, and Vitex agnus-castus, while another system remained unplanted. These systems underwent evaluation by measuring various parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, sulfates, orthophosphates, total Kjeldhal nitrogen, ammonium, nitrates, nitrites, and heavy metals such as silver, copper, and nickel, using standard methods over of ten weeks. The results obtained demonstrate effectiveness of these systems. When planted with Ch. zizanioides, the systems achieved elimination rates of 83.64%, 98.55%, 91.48%, 86.82%, 80.31%, 96.54%, 98%, and 98.82% for suspended solids, ammonium, nitrites, BOD5, sulfates, orthophosphates, silver, and nickel, respectively. System with V. agnus-castus showed significant reductions in nitrate and copper, with rates of 84.48% and 99.10%, respectively. Considerable decrease in pH and electrical conductivity values was observed in all systems, with a notable difference between planted and control systems regarding effectiveness of treatment for other parameters.

Transcriptomic and physiological analyses of Trichoderma citrinoviride HT-1 assisted phytoremediation of Cd contaminated water by Phragmites australis

Plant growth promoting microbe assisted phytoremediation is considered a more effective approach to rehabilitation than the single use of plants, but underlying mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we combined transcriptomic and physiological methods to explore the mechanism of plant growth promoting microbe Trichoderma citrinoviride HT-1 assisted phytoremediation of Cd contaminated water by Phragmites australis. The results show that the strain HT-1 significantly promoted P. australis growth, increased the photosynthetic rate, enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities. The chlorophyll content and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were increased by 83.78%, 23.17%, 47.60%, 97.14% and 12.23% on average, and decreased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) by 31.10%. At the same time, strain HT-1 improved the absorption and transport of Cd in P. australis, and the removal rate of Cd was increased by 7.56% on average. Transcriptome analysis showed that strain HT-1 induced significant up-regulated the expression of genes related to oxidative phosphorylation and ribosome pathways, and these upregulated genes promoted P. australis remediation efficiency and resistance to Cd stress. Our results provide a mechanistic understanding of plant growth promoting microbe assisted phytoremediation under Cd stress.

Sludge Treatment Reed Bed under different climates: A review using meta-analysis

Sludge Treatment Reed Beds (STRBs) have been used worldwide over the past few decades. This review aims to overarchingly identify and appraise the currently available knowledge of STRB technology and discern climatic patterns through Meta-Analysis (MA). We systematically searched Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science databases (up to Dec 2021) via a combination of keywords to identify English-language studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Of 142 potential articles, 73 studies met the present review objectives and inclusion criteria. Four STRB classifications including typical STRB, earthworm STRB, Sludge Treatment Electro Wetland (STEW), and earthworm STEW were found since 1990. The data and information on STRBs' configuration, operational parameters in terms of location, type of sewage sludge, study scale, Sludge Loading Rate (SLR), Dry Solid (DS), the proportion of Volatile Solid to DS (VS/DS), and their association with the feeding and resting modes were extracted from the selected articles. The analysis was focused on the interconnections between operational parameters and system efficiency for Temperate type 1 (low intensity of solar radiation), Temperate type 2 (high intensity of solar radiation), and Tropical climates. Based on MA, we found the average SLRs of 50, 70, and 101 Kg.DM.m^-2.year^-1 for Temperate type 1, Temperate type 2, and Tropical climates respectively, and DS during the feeding of 33 %, 35 %, and 40 %. A qualitative comparison of Arid and Polar climates was also performed given the reduced number of studies available in these climates. The volume of the sludge reduced was 60 % higher and the height of accumulated sludge was annually 2 cm in the earthworm STRBs, and STEWs compared to typical STRBs, which was 6 cm annually in Tropical climates. Correlation analysis, media characterization, list of plant species, and the removal efficiency of STRBs in the residual sludge and leachate are mentioned as well.

Explore the sludge stabilization process in sludge drying bed by modeling study from mesocosm experiments

Sludge drying bed (SDB) treatment is a valuable alternative to conventional sludge treatment methods. However, changes in sludge hydrotexture during dewatering present a barrier for direct modeling of the SDB process. This study proposes a modeling strategy to simulate the sludge stabilization process in SDB treatment by separating sludge dewatering and sludge solids stabilization into independent processes. Two cell decay theories widely used by activated sludge models (ASM), death-regeneration concept and endogenous respiration theory, are compared to describe the biokinetic processes of sludge digestion. Both cell decay theories are found to adequately describe effluent total COD, NH₄-N, NO₃-N, and sludge layer composition, but have pronounced differences in describing effluent COD compositions. Results show that natural aeration does not maintain adequate aerobic/anoxic sludge digestion within the sludge layer to fully nitrify NH₄-N released by cell decay. Results also indicate that the kinetics of sludge digestion are adaptable over time, indicating the need to adopt lumped values for biokinetic simulations. While lowered sludge dewatering rates (outflow) can increase biodegradable COD for cell metabolism, increased sludge loading rates (inflow) lead to higher effluent COD and NH₄-N concentrations. Contrary to conventional judgement, this study demonstrates the merit of sludge layer formation to reduce leaching loss of biodegradable COD. Overall, the proposed modeling strategy is proven capable of simulating deposited sludge digestion processes in an SDB.

Sustainable Dewatering of Industrial Sludges in Sludge Treatment Reed Beds: Experiences from Pilot and Full-Scale Studies under Different Climates

Sludge treatment reed beds (STRBs) are an established sludge treatment technology with multiple environmental and economic advantages in dewatering sludge generated during domestic wastewater treatment. However, little is reported regarding their appropriateness and efficiency for the treatment of sludge produced during industrial wastewater treatment and from water works. These sludge types may have significantly different quality characteristics than typical domestic sludge and may contain constituents that could affect their dewaterability. Therefore, the dewatering of these industrial sludge types is usually tested in small-scale pilot STRBs before the construction of full-scale systems. This paper presents and summarizes the state-of-the-art experience from existing pilot and full-scale STRB systems from various countries and climates treating sludge from various industrial sources, evaluates the suitability and the advantages of this sustainable treatment technology, and proposes the required dimensioning for efficient full-scale STRB operation and performance.

Effect of passive ventilation on the performance of unplanted sludge treatment wetlands: heavy metal removal and microbial community variation

Sludge treatment wetlands (STWs) have been applied worldwide to treat excess sludge; however, the performance of STWs is generally limited by weather partly due to the plants vegetated on the STWs. In this study, ventilation is suggested to assist unvegetated STWs. Solid samples from different depths were analysed. Additionally, the variation of microbial community in STW unit was analysed and the fate of heavy metals in the sludge was determined. Results indicate that the STW unit with suitable parameters has better performance in stabilising and maturing the sludge than planted STW, which may contribute to the variation of the microbial community; additionally, ventilation exerts a positive influence on these bacteria during the variation of microbial community and on heavy metal removal through the substrate and positively impacts the Cd and Pb in reduction state. Furthermore, ventilation decreases the bioavailability of Cr. With ventilation in STWs, Bacillus and Streptomyces play a necessary role in enhancing the possibility of sludge to be used as microbial inoculants.

Effects of loading rates and plant species on sludge characteristics in earthworm assistant sludge treatment wetlands

Sludge treatment wetlands (STWs) are widely used to treat surplus sludge in recent years. However, the effects of plant species and loading rates on sludge characteristics in earthworm assistant STWs remain unclear. In the current study, six STWs planted with two plant species (Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia) were investigated under four loading rates (60, 80, 90 and 120 kg DS/m²/yr) regarding the influence on sludge characteristics. Furthermore, earthworms were added in three STWs to evaluate their role on sludge stabilization during resting period. Results showed that the best sludge dewatering (dry solids (DS) of 45.0%) and stabilization (volatile solids to total solids (VS/TS) of 40.5%) were determined in the P. australis STWs at the loading rate of 80 kg DS/m²/yr. Furthermore, VS/TS and Escherichia coli contents in earthworm STWs were 5.5-11.2% and 12-39% lower than that in the control without earthworm addition. Meanwhile, earthworm also decreased the nutrient contents in STWs. However, earthworms had insignificant effects on heavy metal contents in STWs. Nevertheless, the bioavailability of Cd and Cr in STWs were decreased by earthworm addition, with an acid-soluble fraction of Cd and Cr reduced by 11.2-18% and 2.5-7.5%, respectively. In conclusion, sludge characteristics can be improved by earthworm addition in P. australis STWs.

Deciphering of organic matter and nutrient removal and bacterial community in three sludge treatment wetlands under different operating conditions

Sludge treatment wetlands (STWs) can effectively stabilize sludge, but the microbial community structure in this process is not well characterized. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of organic matter and nutrient removal and bacterial community in sludge treatment wetlands for treating sewage sludge. Three STWs units included unit STW1 with aeration tubes, unit STW2 with aeration tubes and reed planting and unit STW3 with reed planting. The degradation of organic matter and nutrient, sludge dewatering performance and microbial community dynamics in STWs were examined in feeding and resting periods. Our results showed that during the entire process of the experiment, total solids (TS) in STWs increased to 24-31%, volatile solids (VS) in STWs reduced to 43-47%, while the total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorous (TP) concentrations in STWs decreased to 25.1-35.5 mg/g d. w and 5.4-6.2 mg/g d. w. However, the removal efficiencies of organic matter and nutrient in STWs in the feeding period were higher than those in the resting period. Meanwhile, unit STW2 has the best removal performance in organic matter and nutrients during the whole experiment. Microbial community analysis using Illumina MiSeq sequencing technology showed that growth of plants in STWs improved bacterial diversity and richness which corresponded to high removal rates of organic matter and nutrient. Besides, principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) showed that the bacterial community composition in STWs obviously altered between the feeding and the resting periods.

Heavy metals distribution and their bioavailability in earthworm assistant sludge treatment wetland

Sludge treatment wetlands (STWs) have been used for sludge treatment in recent years, however, heavy metals (HMs) are one of the limiting factors for the final sludge application, and the fate of HMs in STWs are still not well studied. Therefore, six STWs with two plant species and earthworm addition were investigated to evaluate their effects on HMs distribution and bioavailability. The results showed that plant uptake of HMs was insignificant with earthworm addition. Earthworm had the highest enrichment for Cd with bioaccumulation factors of 6.9-7.3. Moreover, earthworm had a positive effect to remove HMs in accumulated sludge. Meanwhile, the bioavailability of Cd in accumulated sludge was decreased by earthworm addition, with the acid-soluble fraction decreased from range 16.5-22.7% to range 7.2-10.1%. Furthermore, HMs mass balance in the STWs revealed that HMs were widely distributed in the accumulated sludge, leachate and others, while their (except Cd) accumulation in the plants and earthworm are less than 1%. The Cd toxicity in the accumulated sludge can be reduced by the addition of earthworm with enrichment of 3.6-8.2%. Overall, earthworm addition have positive effects on distribution and bioavailability of HMs in STWs.

Preparation of a synthetic seed for the common reed harboring an endophytic bacterium promoting seedling growth under cadmium stress

Bacterial seed endophytes can facilitate germination and early plant development. Therefore, the introduction of seed-borne endophytes may improve selected plant characteristics across generations. In this study, regenerated plantlets of common reed (Phragmites australis) were inoculated with activated sludge to obtain a specific functional endophytic bacterium. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis demonstrated that abundant endophytic bacteria could be enriched in the roots. A siderophore-producing endophytic bacterium was isolated from the roots and identified as Herbaspirillum frisingense RE3-3 based on 16S rRNA sequences. This endophyte secrets indole-3-acetic acid to promote plant growth and cadmium-binding siderophores. The strain was successfully colonized into synthetic seeds using bacterium-propagule co-cultivation and transmitted to regenerated seedlings. These seedlings exhibited improved growth under cadmium stress. This study identifies Herbaspirillum colonization and transmission as a potentially valuable strategy to improve the phytotoxin resistance of reeds for constructed wetlands.

Influence of biochar on heavy metals and microbial community during composting of river sediment with agricultural wastes

Studies were performed to evaluate influence of biochar addition on physico-chemical process, heavy metals transformation and bacterial community diversity during composting of sediment with agricultural wastes. Simultaneously, the relationships between those parameters including heavy metals and bacterial community compositions were evaluated by redundancy analysis (RDA). The results show that the extraction efficiency of DTPA extractable heavy metals decreased in both piles, and reduced more in pile with biochar addition about 0.1-2.96%. Biochar addition dramatically influenced the bacterial community structure during the composting process. Moreover, the bacterial community composition was significantly correlated with C/N ratio, water soluble carbon (WSC), and organic matter (OM) (P<0.05) in pile with biochar addition; while significantly correlated with temperature, WSC, and C/N ratio in pile which was free of biochar. This study would provide some valuable information for improving the composting for disposal of river sediment with heavy metals contamination.

Preliminary investigation on the effect of earthworm and vegetation for sludge treatment in sludge treatment reed beds system

Sewage sludge treatment is becoming one of the most significant challenges for domestic wastewater management. Optimization of sludge management for reducing sludge handling cost in wastewater treatment plant is highly demanded. Sludge treatment reed bed system (STRB) is an eco-environmentally friendly technology which has a low investment input and reduced costs for operation and maintenance. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of earthworm assistant STRB in terms of sludge dewatering and stabilization of surplus sludge. The results show that draining and evapotranspiration (ET) take the main role for sludge dewatering; with maximum of 77 and 43 % water was removed through draining and ET, respectively. Plants improved ET rate up to 13.1 % in the planted STRB compare with the unplanted STRB. The combination of plants and earthworms increased ET rate of 20.9 % more than the control STRB (unplanted without earthworms). The planted STRB with earthworm reached the lowest water content in accumulated sludge of 46 %. There was a systematic increase of total solids (TS) concentration from 0.5 % in the influent to 25-54 % in the accumulated sludge. Earthworms enhanced the sludge stabilization dramatic with the ratio of volatile solids (VS)/TS decreased from 49 % in the influent to 18 % in the accumulated sludge in the earthworm assistant STRB. The results demonstrated a good efficiency for sludge dewatering and stabilization with the assistant of earthworms in STRBs, which can be an alternative technology for sludge treatment in wastewater treatment plants.
