Electrochemical reduction of nalidixic acid at glassy carbon electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Dual-modal biosensor for mercuric ion detection based on Cu2O@Cu2S/D-TA COF heterojunction with excellent catalase-like, electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties

In this study, a dual-mode biosensor based on the heterojunction of Cu2O@Cu2S/D-TA COF was constructed for ultra-sensitive detection of Hg2+ using both photoelectrochemical and electrochemical approaches. Briefly, a 2D ultra-thin covalent organic framework film (D-TA COF film) with excellent photoelectrochemical signals was prepared on ITO surfaces through an in situ growth method. Subsequently, the probe H1 was immobilized onto the biosensor via Au-S bonds. In the presence of Hg2+, the formation of T-Hg2+-T complexes triggered hybridization chain reactions (HCR), leading to the attachment of abundant Cu2O@Cu2S probes onto the biosensor. As a p-type semiconductor, Cu2O@Cu2S could form a heterojunction with the underlying D-TA COF films. Meanwhile, it exhibited catalase-like activity, and the O2 produced by its catalytic decomposition of H2O2 can interact with the D-TA COF films, thus achieving double amplification of the photocurrent signal. Benefiting from the excellent and inherent Cu2+/Cu+ redox pairs of Cu2O@Cu2S, satisfactory differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) signals were obtained. As expected, the dual-mode biosensor was realized with wider linear ranges and low detection limits. Additionally, the analytical performance for Hg2+ in real water samples was excellent. Briefly, this suggested approach offers a facile and highly efficient modality for monitoring heavy metal ions in aquatic environments.

Comparative Study of the Removal Efficiency of Nalidixic Acid by Poly[(4-vinylbenzyl)trimethylammonium Chloride] and N-Alkylated Chitosan through the Ultrafiltration Technique and Its Approximation through Theoretical Calculations

Emerging antibiotic contaminants in water is a global problem because bacterial strains resistant to these antibiotics arise, risking human health. This study describes the use of poly[(4-vinylbenzyl) trimethylammonium chloride] and N-alkylated chitosan, two cationic polymers with different natures and structures to remove nalidixic acid. Both contain ammonium salt as a functional group. One of them is a synthetic polymer, and the other is a modified artificial polymer. The removal of the antibiotic was investigated under various experimental conditions (pH, ionic strength, and antibiotic concentration) using the technique of liquid-phase polymer-based retention (LPR). In addition, a stochastic algorithm provided by Fukui's functions is used. It was shown that alkylated N-chitosan presents 65.0% removal at pH 7, while poly[(4-vinylbenzyl)trimethylammonium chloride] removes 75.0% at pH 9. The interaction mechanisms that predominate the removal processes are electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonding. The polymers reached maximum retention capacities of 1605 mg g-1 for poly[(4-vinylbenzyl) trimethylammonium chloride] and 561 mg g-1 of antibiotic per gram for alkylated poly(N-chitosan). In conclusion, the presence of aromatic groups improves the capacity and polymer-antibiotic interactions.

Determination of the Effect of Wastewater on the Biological Activity of Mixtures of Fluoxetine and Its Metabolite Norfluoxetine with Nalidixic and Caffeic Acids with Use of E. coli Microbial Bioindicator Strains

In the present work, the conducted research concerned the determination of the toxicity and oxidative stress generation of the antidepressant fluoxetine (FLU), its metabolite nor-fluoxetine (Nor-FLU), the antibiotic nalidixic acid (NA), caffeic acid (CA) and their mixtures in three different environments: microbial medium (MM), raw wastewaters (RW) and treated wastewaters (TW). We evaluated the following parameters: E. coli cell viability, toxicity and protein damage, sodA promoter induction and ROS generation. It was found that FLU, Nor-FLU, NA, CA and their mixtures are toxic and they have the potency to generate oxidative stress in E. coli strains. We also detected that the wastewater, in comparison to the microbial medium, had an influence on the toxic activity and oxidative stress synthesis of the tested chemicals and their mixtures. Regardless of the environment under study, the strongest toxic activity and oxidative stress generation were detected after bacterial incubation with NA at a concentration of 1 mg/dm³ and the mixture of FLU (1 mg/dm³) with Nor-FLU (0.1 mg/dm³) and with NA (0.1 mg/dm³). The ROS synthesis and sodA promoter induction suggest that, in the case of the examined compounds and their mixtures, oxidative stress is the mechanism of toxicity. The analysis of the types of interactions among the substances constituting the mixtures in the wastewater revealed synergism, potentiation and antagonism.

Carbon nanotube modified glassy carbon electrode for electrochemical oxidation of alkylphenol ethoxylate

Electrochemical oxidation of an emerging pollutant, 2-(4-methylphenoxy)ethanol (MPET), from water has been studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Multiwall carbon nanotubes glassy carbon electrodes (MWCNT-GCE) were used as working electrode due to their extraordinary properties. The oxidation process is irreversible, since no reduction peaks were observed in the reverse scan. The electrocatalytic effect of MWCNT was confirmed as the oxidation peak intensity increases in comparison to bare-GCE. The effect of functional groups on MWCNT was also studied by MWCNT functionalized with NH₂ (MWCNT-NH₂) and COOH (MWCNT-COOH) groups. The oxidation peak current decreases in the following order: MWCNT > MWCNT-NH₂ > MWCNT-COOH. Taking into account the normalized peak current, MWCNT-NH₂ exhibits the best results due to its strong interaction with MPET. Under optimal conditions (pH = 5.0 and volume of MWCNT = 10 μL), degradation was studied for MWCNT-GCE and MWCNT-NH₂-GCE. A complete MPET removal was observed using MWCNT-GCE after four CV cycles, for a volume/area (V/A) ratio equal to 19. In the case of MWCNT-NH₂-GCE, the maximum MPET removal was close to 90% for V/A = 37, higher than that obtained for MWCNT-GCE at the same conditions (≈80%). In both cases, no organic by-products were detected.
