Tunable metal-support interaction of Pt/CeO2 catalyst via surfactant-assisted strategy: Insight into the total oxidation of CO and toluene

Tuning the Metal-Support Interaction by Modulating CeO2 Oxygen Vacancies to Enhance the Toluene Oxidation Activity of Pt/CeO2 Catalysts

In this research, a range of Pt/CeO2 catalysts featuring varying Pt-O-Ce bond contents were developed by modulating the oxygen vacancies of the CeO2 support for toluene abatement. The Pt/CeO2-HA catalyst generated a maximum quantity of Pt-O-Ce bonds (possessed the strongest metal-support interaction), as evidenced by the visible Raman results, which demonstrated outstanding toluene catalytic performance. Additionally, the UV Raman results revealed that the strong metal-support interaction stimulated a substantial increase in oxygen vacancies, which could facilitate the activation of gaseous oxygen to generate abundant reactive oxygen species accumulated on the Pt/CeO2-HA catalyst surface, a conclusion supported by the H2-TPR, XPS, and toluene-TPSR results. Furthermore, the results from quasi-in situ XPS, in situ DRIFTS, and DFT indicated that the Pt/CeO2-HA catalyst with a strong metal-support interaction led to improved mobility of reactive oxygen species and lower oxygen activation energies, which could transfer a large number of activated reactive oxygen species to the reaction interface to participate in the toluene oxidation, resulting in the relatively superior catalytic performance. The approach of tuning the metal-support interaction of catalysts offers a promising avenue to develop highly active catalysts for toluene degradation.

In-Depth Understanding of the Oxidative Compatibility of Volatile Organic Compounds with Mn2O3 and Pt-Loaded Catalysts

Designing suitable catalysts for efficiently degrading volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a great challenge due to the distinct variety and nature of VOCs. Herein, the suitability of different typical VOCs (toluene and acetone) over Pt-based catalysts and Mn2O3 was investigated carefully. The activity of Mn2O3 was inferior to Pt-loaded catalysts in toluene oxidation but showed superior ability for destroying acetone, while Pt loading could boost the catalytic activity of Mn2O3 for both acetone and toluene. This suitability could be determined by the physicochemical properties of the catalysts and the structure of the VOC since toluene destruction activity is highly reliant on Pt0 in the metallic state and linearly correlated with the amount of surface reactive oxygen species (Oads), while the crucial factor that affects acetone oxidation is the mobility of lattice oxygen (Olat). The Pt/Mn2O3 catalyst shows highly active Pt-O-Mn interfacial sites, favoring the generation of Oads and promoting Mn-Olat mobility, leading to its excellent performance. Therefore, the design of abundant active sites is an effective means of developing highly adaptive catalysts for the oxidation of different VOCs.

Constructing surface oxygen defects at CuO-Co3O4 interface to boost toluene oxidation over CuO/Co3O4 catalysts

As a typical heterogeneous catalytic process, the catalytic combustion of toluene over Co3O4-based catalysts is strongly depends on the surface properties of catalysts, especially the concentration of surface oxygen defects. Here, a novel way was proposed to construct chemically bonded CuO-Co3O4 interface by chemical deposition of CuO onto Co3O4 nanoflowers. The interfacial refinement effect between CuO and Co3O4 support disrupted the ordered atomic arrangement and created countless unsaturated coordination sites at CuO-Co3O4 interface, inducing a significant generation of surface oxygen defects. Surface-rich oxygen vacancies enhanced the capacity of 20%CuO/Co3O4-R to adsorb and activate oxygen species. Benefiting from this, 90 % toluene conversion was reached at 228 °C over 20%CuO/Co3O4-R, which was much lower than that over 20%CuO/Co3O4-S prepared by impregnation method and CuO/Co3O4-mix obtained by mechanically mixing way. In-situ DRIFTS analysis revealed that toluene could be directly decomposed into benzaldehyde at the highly defective CuO-Co3O4 interface, leading to toluene oxidation following the path of toluene → benzaldehyde → benzoate → maleic anhydride → water and carbon dioxide over 20%CuO/Co3O4-R, which was significantly different from decomposition mechanism over 20%CuO/Co3O4-S. Additionally, 20%CuO/Co3O4-R displayed terrific recyclability and outstanding stability, showing good application potential.

The enhancement of benzene total oxidation over RuxCeO2 catalysts at low temperature: The significance of Ru incorporation

Catalytic oxidation is considered to be the most efficient technology for eliminating benzene from waste gas. The challenge is the reduction of the catalytic reaction temperature for the deep oxidation of benzene. Here, highly efficient RuxCeO2 catalysts were utilized to turn the number of surface oxygen vacancies and Ce-O-Ru bonds via a one-step hydrothermal method, resulting in a preferable low-temperature reducibility for the total oxidation of benzene. The T50 of the Ru0.2CeO2 catalyst for benzene oxidation was 135 °C, which was better than that of pristine CeO2 (239 °C) and 0.2Ru/CeO2 (190 °C). The superior performance of Ru0.2CeO2 was attributed to its large surface area (approximately 114.23 m2·g-1), abundant surface oxygen vacancies, and Ce-O-Ru bonds. The incorporation of Ru into the CeO2 lattice could effectively facilitate the destruction of the CeO bond and the facile release of lattice oxygen, inducing the generation of surface oxygen vacancies. Meanwhile, the bridging action of Ce-O-Ru bonds accelerated electron transfer and lattice oxygen transportation, which had a synergistic effect with surface oxygen vacancies to reduce the reaction temperature. The Ru0.2CeO2 catalyst also exhibited high catalytic stability, water tolerance, and impact resistance in terms of benzene abatement. Using in situ infrared spectroscopy, it was demonstrated that the Ru0.2CeO2 catalyst can effectively enhance the accumulation of maleate species, which are key intermediates for benzene ring opening, thereby enhancing the deep oxidation of benzene.

Tuning the Interaction between Platinum Single Atoms and Ceria by Zirconia Doping for Efficient Catalytic Ammonia Oxidation

Aiming at the development of an efficient NH3 oxidation catalyst to eliminate the harmful NH3 slip from the stationary flue gas denitrification system and diesel exhaust aftertreatment system, a facile ZrO2 doping strategy was proposed to construct Pt1/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts with a tunable Pt-CeO2 interaction strength and Pt-O-Ce coordination environment. According to the results of systematic characterizations, Pt species supported on CexZr1-xO2 were mainly in the form of single atoms when x ≥ 0.7, and the strength of the Pt-CeO2 interaction and the coordination number of Pt-O-Ce bond (CNPt-O-Ce) on Pt1/CexZr1-xO2 showed a volcanic change as a function of the ZrO2 doping amount. It was proposed that the balance between the reasonable concentration of oxygen defects and limited surface Zr-Ox species well accounted for the strongest Pt-CeO2 interaction and the highest CNPt-O-Ce on Pt/Ce0.9Zr0.1O2. It was observed that the Pt/Ce0.9Zr0.1O2 catalyst exhibited much higher NH3 oxidation activity than other Pt/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts. The mechanism study revealed that the Pt1 species with the stronger Pt-CeO2 interaction and higher CNPt-O-Ce within Pt/Ce0.9Zr0.1O2 could better activate NH3 adsorbed on Lewis acid sites to react with O2 thus resulting in superior NH3 oxidation activity. This work provides a new approach for designing highly efficient Pt/CeO2 based catalysts for low-temperature NH3 oxidation.

What is the role of interface in the catalytic elimination of multi-carbon air pollutants?

Multi-carbon air pollutants pose serious hazards to the environment and health, especially soot and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Catalytic oxidation is one of the most effective technologies for eliminating them. The oxidation of soot and most hydrocarbon VOCs begins with C-H (or edge-CH) activation, so this commonality can be targeted to design active sites. Rationally designed interface nanostructures optimize metal-support interactions (MSIs), providing suitable active sites for C-H activation. Meanwhile, the interfacial reactant spillover facilitates the further decomposition of activated intermediates. Thus, rationally exploiting interfacial effects is critical to enhancing catalytic activity. In this review, we analyzed recent advances in the following aspects: I. Understanding of the interface effects and design; II. Optimization of the catalyst-reactant contact, metal-support interface, and MSIs; III. Design of the interfacial composition and perimeter. Based on the analysis of the advances and current status, we provided challenges and opportunities for the rational design of interface nanostructures and interface-related stability. Meanwhile, a critical outlook was given on the interfacial sites of single-atom catalysts (SACs) for specific activation and catalytic selectivity.

Investigation of defect-rich CeO2 catalysts for super low-temperature catalytic oxidation and durable styrene removal

Spherical cerium dioxide (CeO₂-S) nanoparticles were successfully prepared using a solvothermal method, and their performances in catalytic oxidation reactions were studied. The CeO₂-S catalyst showed superior low-temperature catalytic activity for styrene removal (T₉₀ = 118 °C, GHSV = 18,000 h^-1) compared with commercial CeO₂. The characterization results showed that there were numerous oxygen defects in CeO₂-S that were key to its catalytic performance at low temperatures, high redox properties, and high adsorption capacity for the reaction gases (O₂ and styrene). Moreover, the catalytic performance of CeO₂-S was highly stable (132 h), and the particles were reusable. FTIR and in-situ DRIFTS results showed that the type of intermediates formed during the oxidation of styrene determined the CeO₂ catalytic stability, and the main intermediates were bidentate carbonate species that accumulated on the surface of deactivated CeO₂-S and were not thermally stable. Moreover, the soft carbon that also deposited on CeO₂-S during the reaction was easily decomposed at higher temperatures. The role of the oxygen vacancies on the CeO₂-S catalyst was further revealed by correlating the concentration of oxygen vacancies and the accumulation of coke on the catalyst surface.
