Abstract
For dry reforming of methane, the active metal particle size of the catalyst has a significant effect on both the reaction activity and the resistance to carbon deposition. In this study, nickel particles of different sizes (Ni13, Ni25, and Ni37) supported on the MgO(100) slab are used to study the mechanism of CH4 activation and carbon growth based on DFT theoretical calculations. According to the results, the energy of adsorption for reaction intermediates changes depending on the size of the active metal. The adsorption process of CH3, CH2, CH and C on Ni25/MgO has a maximum exothermic value. Furthermore, the energy barriers of CH4 four-step dehydrogenation are lowest on Ni25/MgO during the CH4 activation process. The growth process of carbon deposition on the catalysts is also investigated in this work. The results indicate that the growth of carbon from C5 to C6 is difficult to proceed on Ni13/MgO due to size and active site limitation. Additionally, with an increase in particle size of the active metal, the absolute value of growth energy and average carbon binding energy of Cn increase on both Ni25/MgO and Ni37/MgO. It is proved that smaller particle size presents better resistance to carbon deposition. In the studied size range, Ni25/MgO is demonstrated to have greater catalytic activity and better resistance to carbon deposition.

Abstract
Methane (CH4 ) is inexpensive, high in heating value, relatively low in carbon footprint compared to coal, and thus a promising energy resource. However, the locations of natural gas production sites are typically far from industrial areas. Therefore, transportation is needed, which could considerably increase the sale price of natural gas. Thus, the development of distributed, clean, affordable processes for the efficient conversion of CH4 has increasingly attracted people's attention. Among them are plasma technology with the advantages of mild operating conditions, low space need, and quick generation of energetic and chemically active species, which allows the reaction to occur far from the thermodynamic equilibrium and at a reasonable cost. Significant progress in plasma-assisted reforming of methane (PARM) is achieved and reviewed in this paper from the perspectives of reactor development, thermal and nonthermal PARM routes, and catalysis. The factors affecting the conversion of reactants and the selectivity of products are studied. The findings from the past works and the insight into the existing challenges in this work should benefit the further development of reactors, high-performance catalysts, and PARM routes.

Abstract
With the continuous development of catalytic processes in chemistry, biology, organic synthesis, energy generation and many other fields, the design of catalysts with novel properties has become a new paradigm in both science and industry. Nonthermal plasma has aroused extensive interest in the synthesis and modification of catalysts. An increasing number of researchers are using plasma for the modification of target catalysts, such as modifying the dispersion of active sites, regulating electronic properties, enhancing metal-support interactions, and changing the morphology. Plasma provides an alternative choice for catalysts in the modification process of oxidation, reduction, etching, coating, and doping and is especially helpful for unfavourable thermodynamic processes or heat-sensitive reactions. This review focuses on the following points: (i) the fundamentals behind the nonthermal plasma modification of catalysts; (ii) the latest research progress on the application of plasma modified catalysts; and (iii) main challenges in the field and a vision for future development.

Abstract
Iron- and cobalt-based heterogeneous catalysts are widely applied for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade organic pollutants. However, few studies have unveiled the clear synergistic mechanism of iron and cobalt in ZSM-5. In this paper, the synergistic mechanism of enhanced PMS activation was revealed by constructing iron and cobalt bimetal modified ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts (FeCo-ZSM-5). The tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation experiments showed that the catalytic activity of FeCo-ZSM-5-2:3 was much higher than those of Fe-ZSM-5 and Co-ZSM-5. In addition, the influences of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, reaction temperature, initial pH, and coexisting ions on TCH removal were systematically investigated in this paper. Density functional theory calculations indicated that Co was the main active site for PMS adsorption, and Fe increased the area of Co's positive potential mapped to the electron cloud. The Fe-Co bimetallic doping increased the area of positive potential mapped to the electron cloud and benefited the adsorption of PMS on the catalyst surface, which revealed the synergistic mechanism of bimetals. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and quenching experiments showed that sulfate radicals, singlet oxygen, and hydroxyl radicals were involved in the degradation of TCH. Furthermore, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was conducted to propose possible degradation pathways. This work provides certain guiding significance in understanding the synergistic effect of heterogeneous catalysts for tetracycline wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Plasma-treated goethite nanoparticles with high surface area and improved density of surface hydroxyl groups were synthesized from natural goethite (NG) using Argon (PTG-Ar) and Nitrogen (PTG-N2) as plasma environment to enhance the performance of heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process. Synthesized samples were characterized by FESEM, EDX, TEM, XRD, XPS, BET-BJH, FTIR, AAS and pHPZC. Results indicated a significantly different morphology for the prepared samples with negligible change in crystal structure. Furthermore, the catalytic activity and synergy factor of the NG and PTG nanocatalysts were evaluated for degradation and mineralization of Sulfasalazine antibiotic (SSZ) as an environmental hazardous contaminant. The highest removal efficiency was achieved 96.05 % under the optimal operating conditions. The kinetic study confirmed the pseudo-first-order reaction for the degradation process. Moreover, the dissolved ozone concentration and effect of organic and inorganic salts were studied in order to assess the reactive oxidant species (ROSs) and catalyst active sites in the process. The mechanism investigation showed the catalytic ozonation of SSZ was mainly performed by successive attacks of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radicals (O2-) and direct ozone molecules. Environmentally-friendly modification of the NG, negligible iron leaching, successive reusability and superior catalytic activity are the major benefits of the PTG nanoparticles.

Abstract
Natural gas is a robust and environmentally friendlier alternative to oil resources for energy and chemicals production. However, gas is distributed globally within shales and hydrates, which are generally remote and difficult reserves to produce. The accessibility, transportation, and distribution, therefore, bring major capital costs. With today’s low and foreseen low price of natural gas, conversion of natural gas to higher value-added chemicals is highly sought by industry. Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a technology pathway to convert two critical greenhouse gas components, CH4 and CO2, to syngas, a commodity chemical feedstock. To date, the challenges of carbon deposition on the catalyst and evolution of secondary gas-phase products have prevented the commercial application of the DRM process. The recent exponential growth of renewable electricity resources, wind and solar power, provides a major opportunity to activate reactions by harnessing low-cost carbon-free energy via microwave-heating. This study takes advantage of differences in dielectric properties of materials to enable selective heating by microwave to create a large thermal gradient between a catalyst surface and the gas phase. Consequently, the reaction kinetics at the higher temperature catalyst surface are promoted while the reactions of lower temperature secondary gas-phase are reduced.

Abstract
Walnut-shell activated carbon (WSAC) supported ferric oxide was modified by non-thermal plasma (NTP), and the removal efficiency for hydrogen sulfide over Fe/WSAC modified by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was significantly promoted. The sample modified for 10min and 6.8kV output (30V input voltage) maintained 100% H2S conversion over a long reaction time of 390min. The surface properties of adsorbents modified by NTP under different conditions were evaluated by the methods of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis and in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), to help understand the effect of the NTP treatment. NTP treatment enhanced the adsorption capacity of Fe/WSAC, which could due to the formation of micro-pores with sizes of 0.4, 0.5 and 0.75nm. XPS revealed that chemisorbed oxygen changed into lattice oxygen after NTP treatment, and lattice oxygen is beneficial for H2S oxidation. From the in-situ FTIR result, transformation of the reaction path on Fe/WSAC was observed after NTP modification. The research results indicate that NTP is an effective method to improve the surface properties of the Fe/WSAC catalyst for H2S adsorption-oxidation.

Abstract
Sono-dispersion of Ni, Co and Ni-Co over Al2O3-MgO with Al/Mg ratio of 1.5 was prepared and tested for dry reforming of methane. The samples were characterized by XRD, FESEM, PSD, EDX, TEM, BET and FTIR analyses. In order to assess the effect of ultrasound irradiation, Ni-Co/Al2O3-MgO with Co content of 8% prepared via sonochemistry and impregnation methods. The sono-synthesized sample showed better textural properties and higher activity than that of impregnated one. Comparison of XRD patterns indicated that the NiO peaks became broader by increasing Co content over the support. The FESEM images displayed the particles are small and well-dispersed as a result of sonochemistry method. Also, EDX analysis demonstrated better dispersion of Ni and Co as a result of sonochemistry method in confirmation of XRD analysis. The sono-synthesized Ni-Co/Al2O3-MgO as a superior nanocatalyst with Co content of 3% illustrates much higher conversions (97.5% and 99% for CH4 and CO2 at 850 °C), yields (94% and 96% for H2 and CO at 850 °C) and 0.97 of H2/CO molar ratio in all samples using an equimolar feed ratio at 850 °C. During the 1200 min stability test, H2/CO molar ratio remained constant for the superior nanocatalyst.

Abstract
Pyrolysis of Nannochloropsis was carried out in a fixed-bed reactor with newly prepared ceria based catalysts. The effects of pyrolysis parameters such as temperature and catalysts on product yields were investigated. The amount of bio-char, bio-oil and gas products, as well as the compositions of the resulting bio-oils was determined. The results showed that both temperature and catalyst had significant effects on conversion of Nannochloropsis into solid, liquid and gas products. The highest bio-oil yield (23.28 wt%) and deoxygenation effect was obtained in the presence of Ni-Ce/Al2O3 as catalyst at 500°C. Ni-Ce/Al2O3 was able to retain 59% of the alga starting energy in the bio-oil, compared to only 41% in absence of catalyst. Lower content of acids and oxygen in the bio-oil, higher aliphatics (62%), combined with HHV show promise for production of high-quality bio-oil from Nannochloropsis via Ni-Ce/Al2O3 catalytic pyrolysis.

Abstract
The bimetallic Pd-Cu nanocatalysts with different Pd loadings and ultrasonic irradiation times were sonochemically synthesized and their activities toward CO oxidation were investigated. XRD, FESEM, TEM, BET, FTIR and TG-DTG techniques were employed in nanocatalysts characterization. XRD data confirmed formation of CuAl2O4 spinel with an average crystallite size of 4.9 nm. FESEM images revealed more uniform pattern and also fewer agglomerations were observed by increasing ultrasonic irradiation time. In agreement with FESEM result, TEM images depicted nanoparticles and uniform dispersion of active phase over alumina. BET surface analysis showed that increasing the Pd loading has no significant effect on surface area; whereas by increasing irradiation time the surface area increases slightly. Catalytic performance tests of synthesized samples showed that Pd(1.5%)-Cu(20%)/Al2O3 with 95 min ultrasonic irradiation time had the best activity over the course of reaction. In addition, increasing CO at feed composition revealed that among synthesized nanocatalysts with 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% of Pd, synthesized sample with 1.5% of Pd had the best low-temperature activity.
