NMRduino: A modular, open-source, low-field magnetic resonance platform

The NMRduino is a compact, cost-effective, sub-MHz NMR spectrometer that utilizes readily available open-source hardware and software components. One of its aims is to simplify the processes of instrument setup and data acquisition control to make experimental NMR spectroscopy accessible to a broader audience. In this introductory paper, the key features and potential applications of NMRduino are described to highlight its versatility both for research and education.

Tiny but mighty: metal nanoparticles as effective antimicrobial agents for plant pathogen control

Metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have gained significant attention in recent years for their potential use as effective antimicrobial agents for controlling plant pathogens. This review article summarizes the recent advances in the role of MNPs in the control of plant pathogens, focusing on their mechanisms of action, applications, and limitations. MNPs can act as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent against various plant pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Different types of MNPs, such as silver, copper, zinc, iron, and gold, have been studied for their antimicrobial properties. The unique physicochemical properties of MNPs, such as their small size, large surface area, and high reactivity, allow them to interact with plant pathogens at the molecular level, leading to disruption of the cell membrane, inhibition of cellular respiration, and generation of reactive oxygen species. The use of MNPs in plant pathogen control has several advantages, including their low toxicity, selectivity, and biodegradability. However, their effectiveness can be influenced by several factors, including the type of MNP, concentration, and mode of application. This review highlights the current state of knowledge on the use of MNPs in plant pathogen control and discusses the future prospects and challenges in the field. Overall, the review provides insight into the potential of MNPs as a promising alternative to conventional chemical agents for controlling plant pathogens.

A pulsed current-mode class-D low-voltage high-bandwidth power amplifier for portable NMR systems

Low-field NMR has seen growing interest in recent years, especially for portable applications. The lower homogeneity magnets used for portable applications require short RF pulses to ensure enough transmit bandwidth to excite the sample volume and also support short echo periods. Furthermore, the preferred use of a high-Q coil to improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) prolongs the pulse transients. Thus, at such low Larmor frequencies, the excitation pulse transients become comparable or longer than the pulse length, such that the transmit bandwidth begins to limit measurement SNR. This paper describes the design of a pulsed current-mode class-D power (PCMCD) transmitter that addresses this issue by generating high power in a tuned sample coil while maintaining short transients, thus resulting in high output bandwidth. The transmitter also uses a charge recycling mechanism to maximize power efficiency for RF train excitation, which also results in faster pulse repetition rate and reduces allowable echo time. Experimental results from a small form-factor PCMCD transmitter are presented. This design generates a peak RF power of 240 W into a 9.16 μH coil at 4 MHz while operating off a single 12 V power supply. NMR measurement results using the transmitter are also described, showing minimum achievable echo time of 70 μs and 25 μs depending on the transmitter mode of operation.

Generating accurate tip angles for NMR outside the rotating-wave approximation

The generation of accurate tip angles is critical for many applications of nuclear magnetic resonance. In low static field, with a linear rather than circular polarized rf field, the rotating-wave approximation may no longer hold and significant deviations from expected trajectories on the Bloch sphere can occur. For rectangular rf pulses, the effects depend strongly on the phase of the rf field and can be further compounded by transients at the start and end of the pulse. The desired terminus can be still be achieved, however, through the application of a phase-dependent Bloch-Siegert shift and appropriate consideration of pulse timings. For suitably shaped rf pulses, the Bloch-Siegert shift is largely phase independent, but its magnitude can vary significantly depending on details of the pulse shape as well as the characteristics of the rf coil circuit. We present numerical simulations and low-field NMR experiments with ¹H and ³He that demonstrate several main consequences and accompanying strategies that one should consider when wanting to generate accurate tip angles outside the validity of the rotating-wave approximation and in low static field.

Nanoparticles in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular aging and related diseases

Aging-induced alternations of vasculature structures, phenotypes, and functions are key in the occurrence and development of vascular aging-related diseases. Multiple molecular and cellular events, such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, vascular inflammation, cellular senescence, and epigenetic alterations are highly associated with vascular aging physiopathology. Advances in nanoparticles and nanotechnology, which can realize sensitive diagnostic modalities, efficient medical treatment, and better prognosis as well as less adverse effects on non-target tissues, provide an amazing window in the field of vascular aging and related diseases. Throughout this review, we presented current knowledge on classification of nanoparticles and the relationship between vascular aging and related diseases. Importantly, we comprehensively summarized the potential of nanoparticles-based diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in vascular aging and related diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, as well as chronic kidney diseases, and discussed the advantages and limitations of their clinical applications.

Inside-out NMR with two concentric ring magnets

We report the design and the implementation of an inside-out NMR sensor that produces a large sensitive region with substantially uniform magnetic field at a remote location. The construction using a pair of ring magnets is simple yet provides multiple benefits, including large sample volume, operation with low RF power, and the ability to measure samples with long T₂ and high diffusivity. A palm-size inside-out NMR sensor (57 mm OD × 29 mm height, 420 g including the housing and the coil PCB) was built with inexpensive magnets. The sweet spot is located ∼5 mm above the magnet surface with ∼4 mm width and ∼5 mm height assuming t₁₈₀ = 18 μs. The field strength at that point is 0.16 T and achieved SNR ∼23 per two scans when operated with ∼10 W peak RF power. Its quasi-uniform B₀ around the saddle point allows the measurement of T₂ = 1.5 s with a 100 μs echo time.

Reimagining magnetic resonance instrumentation using open maker tools and hardware as protocol

Over the course of its history, the field of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been characterized by alternating periods of intensive instrumentation development and rapid expansion into new chemical application areas. NMR is now both a mainstay of routine analysis for laboratories at all levels of education and research. On the other hand, new instrumentation and methodological advances promise expanded functionality in the future. At the core of this success is a community fundamentally dedicated to sharing ideas and collaborative advancements, as exemplified by the extensive remixing and repurposing of pulse sequences. Recent progress in modularity, automation, and 3D printing have reignited the tinkering spirit and demonstrate great promise to mature into a maker space that will enable similarly facile sharing of new applications and broader access to magnetic resonance.

Automated Low-Cost In Situ IR and NMR Spectroscopy Characterization of Clinical-Scale 129Xe Spin-Exchange Optical Pumping

We present on the utility of in situ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic techniques for automated advanced analysis of the ¹²⁹Xe hyperpolarization process during spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP). The developed software protocol, written in the MATLAB programming language, facilitates detailed characterization of hyperpolarized contrast agent production efficiency based on determination of key performance indicators, including the maximum achievable ¹²⁹Xe polarization, steady-state Rb-¹²⁹Xe spin-exchange and ¹²⁹Xe polarization build-up rates, ¹²⁹Xe spin-relaxation rates, and estimates of steady-state Rb electron polarization. Mapping the dynamics of ¹²⁹Xe polarization and relaxation as a function of SEOP temperature enables systematic optimization of the batch-mode SEOP process. The automated analysis of a typical experimental data set, encompassing ∼300 raw NMR and NIR spectra combined across six different SEOP temperatures, can be performed in under 5 min on a laptop computer. The protocol is designed to be robust in operation on any batch-mode SEOP hyperpolarizer device. In particular, we demonstrate the implementation of a combination of low-cost NIR and low-frequency NMR spectrometers (∼$1,100 and ∼$300 respectively, ca. 2020) for use in the described protocols. The demonstrated methodology will aid in the characterization of NMR hyperpolarization hardware in the context of SEOP and other hyperpolarization techniques for more robust and less expensive clinical production of HP ¹²⁹Xe and other contrast agents.

Perspectives in process analytics using low field NMR

Low field NMR is a powerful analytical tool which creates an enormous added value in process analytics. Based on specific applications in process analytics and perspectives for low field NMR in form of spectroscopy, relaxation, diffusion, and imaging in quality control, diverse applications and technical realizations like spectrometers, time domain NMR, mobile NMR sensors and MRI will be discussed.

EPR Everywhere

This review is inspired by the contributions from the University of Denver group to low-field EPR, in honor of Professor Gareth Eaton's 80th birthday. The goal is to capture the spirit of innovation behind the body of work, especially as it pertains to development of new EPR techniques. The spirit of the DU EPR laboratory is one that never sought to limit what an EPR experiment could be, or how it could be applied. The most well-known example of this is the development and recent commercialization of rapid-scan EPR. Both of the Eatons have made it a point to remain knowledgeable on the newest developments in electronics and instrument design. To that end, our review touches on the use of miniaturized electronics and applications of single-board spectrometers based on software-defined radio (SDR) implementations and single-chip voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) arrays. We also highlight several non-traditional approaches to the EPR experiment such as an EPR spectrometer with a "wand" form factor for analysis of the OxyChip, the EPR-MOUSE which enables non-destructive in situ analysis of many non-conforming samples, and interferometric EPR and frequency swept EPR as alternatives to classical high Q resonant structures.

Low-cost low-field NMR and MRI: Instrumentation and applications

While NMR and MRI are often thought of as expensive techniques requiring large institutional investment, opportunities for low-cost, low-field NMR and MRI abound. We discuss a number of approaches to performing magnetic resonance experiments with inexpensive, easy to find or build components, aimed at applications in industry, education, and research. Opportunities that aim to make NMR accessible to a broad community are highlighted. We describe and demonstrate some projects from our laboratory, including a new prototype instrument for measurements at frequencies up to ∼200 kHz and demonstrate its application to the study of the rapidly advancing technique known as inhomogeneous magnetization transfer imaging, a promising method for characterizing myelin in vivo.

High-resolution Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization enhanced proton NMR spectroscopy at low magnetic fields

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) has gained large interest due to its ability to increase signal intensities in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments by several orders of magnitude. Currently, DNP is typically used to enhance high-field, solid-state NMR experiments. However, the method is also capable of dramatically increasing the observed signal intensities in solution-state NMR spectroscopy. In this work, we demonstrate the application of Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (ODNP) spectroscopy at an NMR frequency of 14.5 MHz (0.35 T) to observe DNP-enhanced high-resolution NMR spectra of small molecules in solutions. Using a compact hybrid magnet with integrated shim coils to improve the magnetic field homogeneity we are able to routinely obtain proton linewidths of less than 4 Hz and enhancement factors >30. The excellent field resolution allows us to perform chemical-shift resolved ODNP experiments on ethyl crotonate to observe proton J-coupling. Furthermore, recording high-resolution ODNP-enhanced NMR spectra of ethylene glycol allows us to characterize the microwave induced sample heating in-situ, by measuring the separation of the OH and CH2 proton peaks.
