Highly tunable anionic tethered N-heterocyclic carbene of Pd(II) complexes for asymmetric allylic alkylation reaction

Mechanochemistry for the synthesis of non-classical N-metalated palladium(II) pincer complexes

The peculiarities of cyclopalladation of a series of non-classical pincer-type ligands based on monothiooxalyl amides bearing ancillary N- or S-donor groups in the amide units have been scrutinized both under conditions of conventional solution-based synthesis and in the absence of a solvent according to a solid-phase methodology including mechanochemical activation. Grinding the functionalized monothiooxamides with PdCl₂(NCPh)₂ in a mortar or vibration ball mill is shown to serve as an efficient and green alternative to the synthesis of these complex metal-organic systems in solution that can offer such advantages as the absence of any auxiliary and significant rate and yield enhancement, especially for the challenging ligands. The realization of S,N,N- or S,N,S-monoanionic tridentate coordination in the resulting pincer complexes has been confirmed by multinuclear NMR (including 2D NMR) and IR spectroscopy and, in some cases, X-ray diffraction. The course and outcome of the solid-phase reactions have been studied by a combination of different spectroscopic methods as well as SEM/EDS analysis. The preliminary evaluation of cytotoxic activity against several human cancer cell lines has revealed the high potency of some of the cyclopalladated derivatives obtained, rendering further development of solvent-free synthetic routes to this type of complexes very urgent.

Novel Chiral Ligands for Palladium-catalyzed Asymmetric Allylic Alkylation/ Asymmetric Tsuji-Trost Reaction: A Review

Background:

Asymmetric catalysis holds a prestigious role in organic syntheses since a long time and chiral inductors such as ligands have been used to achieve the utmost desired results at this pitch. The asymmetric version of Tsuji-Trost allylation has played a crucial role in enantioselective synthesis. Various chiral ligands have been known for Pdcatalyzed Asymmetric Allylic Alkylation (AAA) reactions and exhibited excellent catalytic potential. The use of chiral ligands as asymmetric inductors has widened the scope of Tsuji-Trost allylic alkylation reactions.

Conclusion:

Therefore, in this review article, a variety of chiral inductors or ligands have been focused for palladium catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation (Tsuji-Trost allylation) and in this regard, recently reported literature (2013-2017) has been described. The use of ligands causes the induction of enantiodiscrimination to the allylated products, therefore, the syntheses of various kinds of ligands have been targeted by many research groups to employ in Pd-catalyzed AAA reactions.

Metal complexes with oxygen-functionalized NHC ligands: synthesis and applications

Ligand design has met with considerable success with both categories of hybrid ligands, which are characterized by chemically different donor groups, and of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). Their spectacular development and diversity are attracting worldwide interest and offers almost unlimited diversity and potential in e.g. coordination/organometallic main group and transition metal chemistry, catalysis, medicinal chemistry and materials science. This review aims at providing a comprehensive update on a specific class of ligands that has enjoyed much attention in the past few years, at the intersection between the two categories mentioned above, that of hybrid NHC ligands in which the functionality associated with the carbene donor is of the oxygen-donor type. For each type of oxygen-donor present in such chelating (Section 1) or bridging (Section 2) hybrid ligands, we will examine the synthesis, structures and reactivity of their metal complexes and their applications, with a special focus on homogeneous catalysis (Section 3). Thus, hydrogenation, C-H bond activation, C-C, C-N, C-O bond formation, hydrolysis of silanes, oligomerization, polymerization, metathesis, hydrosilylation, C-C bond cleavage, acceptorless dehydrogenation, dehalogenation/hydrogen transfer, oxidation and reduction reactions will be successively presented in a tabular manner, to facilitate an overview and a rapid identification of the relevant publications describing which metals associated with a given oxygen functionality are most suitable. The literature coverage includes the year 2015.

Highly selective palladium-benzothiazole carbene-catalyzed allylation of active methylene compounds under neutral conditions

The Pd–benzothiazol-2-ylidene complex I was found to be a chemoselective catalyst for the Tsuji–Trost allylation of active methylene compounds carried out under neutral conditions and using carbonates as allylating agents. The proposed protocol consists in a simplified procedure adopting an in situ prepared catalyst from Pd₂dba₃ and 3-methylbenzothiazolium salt V as precursors. A comparison of the performance of benzothiazole carbene with phosphanes and an analogous imidazolium carbene ligand is also proposed.
