What Is the Preparedness and Capacity of Palliative Care Services in Middle-Eastern and North African Countries to Respond to COVID-19? A Rapid Survey

Evidence-based nursing practice and improving pediatric patient care outcomes in the prevention of infection transmission: Emergency department findings

BACKGROUND

Reducing the risk of infection transmission by getting emergency care for pediatric patients is a challenging task.

AIM

The study aim was to assess emergency nurses' readiness to provide care for pediatric patients with infectious diseases.

METHOD

Two hundred Jordanian emergency department nurses were surveyed using a descriptive design.

RESULTS

The study revealed that insufficient safety and infection control procedures were put into place, starting with family support to allow nurses to work 145 (78%), family care plans intended to assist caregivers 139 (74.7%), the availability of respiratory protection and a backup plan for standard precautions, training requirements, and equipment 131 (70.4%), create a unit pandemic safety strategy 124 (66.7%), have a plan for emergencies for at-risk staff 116 (62.4%), have a hospital pandemic safety plan 113 (60.8%), manage inventory 102 (54.8%), use reuse guidelines if there will be severe shortages 99 (53.2%), create a strategy for nurses' access to healthcare for themselves and their families 96 (51.6%), and end with any required system updates for new policies 88 (47.3%). Staff nurses made up a large proportion of participants (145; 78%; 115; 62.8%) who said they lacked experience with care for pediatric patients with infectious illnesses who were critically sick. A 62.8% of nurses reported they did not have training in infectious disease emergency prevention and control for pediatric patients. What nurses prioritize it was determined that the concept of crisis standards of care (34.9%) was the most important educational topic for training emergency room nurses to care for pediatric patients who are critically ill with infectious infections, while the clarity of communication pathways was ranked lowest.

CONCLUSION

More training and support are needed for emergency room nurses to properly care for children's patients with infectious illnesses.

Compassion fatigue in healthcare providers: a scoping review

The detrimental impacts of COVID-19 on healthcare providers' psychological health and well-being continue to affect their professional roles and activities, leading to compassion fatigue. The purpose of this review was to identify and summarize published literature on compassion fatigue among healthcare providers and its impact on patient care. Six databases were searched: MEDLINE (Ovid), PsycINFO (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, for studies on compassion fatigue in healthcare providers, published in English from the peak of the pandemic in 2020 to 2023. To expand the search, reference lists of included studies were hand searched to locate additional relevant studies. The studies primarily focused on nurses, physicians, and other allied health professionals. This scoping review was registered on Open Science Framework (OSF), using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) extension to scoping review. From 11,715 search results, 24 met the inclusion criteria. Findings are presented using four themes: prevalence of compassion fatigue; antecedents of compassion fatigue; consequences of compassion fatigue; and interventions to address compassion fatigue. The potential antecedents of compassion fatigue are grouped under individual-, organization-, and systems-level factors. Our findings suggest that healthcare providers differ in risk for developing compassion fatigue in a country-dependent manner. Interventions such as increasing available personnel helped to minimize the occurrence of compassion fatigue. This scoping review offers important insight on the common causes and potential risks for compassion fatigue among healthcare providers and identifies potential strategies to support healthcare providers' psychological health and well-being.

Building an action plan to tackle palliative care inequality through multi-stakeholder platforms

Background

To achieve universal care and overcome existing barriers, the most effective strategy is to devise an action plan that incorporates palliative care into primary health care (PHC), as recommended by the World Health Organization's (WHO) Astana Declaration. In Colombia, a country with an upper-middle-income status, about 128,000 individuals experience severe health-related suffering (SHS) that necessitates palliative care. Although the country's healthcare system has made steady strides in the integration and development of palliative care, there is still no national plan in place for palliative care.

Objective

Build up Colombia's palliative care plan through stakeholder consensus.

Method

Based on the participatory action research method and the multi-stakeholder platforms model, this study convened 142 stakeholders from different levels of the health system (patient representatives, journalists, health professionals, government entities, insurance companies, universities, and drug regulatory authorities).

Results

The national plan aims to achieve its objectives through a series of strategic actions. These include integrating and diversifying palliative care services, improving access to opioids, increasing palliative care education, promoting community-based palliative care programs, securing funding, and implementing a regulatory framework for palliative care by public policymakers.

Conclusions

The national palliative care is an alliance that aims to reduce palliative care inequity in Colombia by 2026 by empowering stakeholders nationwide to collaborate around specific goals and objectives.

Middle Eastern nurses' views/experiences of work and well-being with the support measures during past disease outbreaks and COVID-19: a qualitative systematic review

BACKGROUND

The potential psychological health impact of pandemics on nurses has been increasingly widely recognised, as have recommendations to establish support measures for nurses' well-being. Despite the availability of support measures significant number of nurses still experienced burnout and mental distress during Covid-19. Few efforts have been made in the wider literature to understand how nurses experience well-being support or how they perceive it affects their well-being during pandemics. In the Middle East, understanding and exploring well-being support measures during pandemics from nurses' perspectives has not received significant attention.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate nurses' perspectives and experiences of well-being support measures during prior pandemics and the Covid-19 pandemic in the Middle East.

METHODS

A systematic qualitative review was undertaken utilising the JBI model as a framework. Searches were carried out in databases comprised CINAHL, MEDLINE, NUsearch Library of Nottingham University and Google Scholar. Moreover, a manual search through reference lists for relevant studies were carried out.

DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS

Eleven studies were included in the review. The findings from the included qualitative studies were extracted using the JBI-QARI data extraction tool for qualitative research. The results were synthesised using a meta-synthesis in line with the JBI approach.

RESULTS

The included studies yielded an aggregate of 111 findings and were categorised into 14 categories, followed by four synthesised findings. These were: [1] nurses experienced challenges during MERS, yet different strategies were implemented by leaders and nurses to manage these challenges; [2] some well-being support measures were unfulfilled during Covid-19; [3] additional aspects compounded negatively on nurses' well- being; and [4] nurses showed maturity during Covid-19.

CONCLUSION

In comparison to prior health emergencies, well-being support measures during Covid-19 were not sufficiently adopted. Nurse policymakers and managers should consider these support measures to correspond with nurses' needs and explore the contextual factors that affect their implementation.

Providing person-centered palliative care in conflict-affected populations in the Middle East: What matters to patients with advanced cancer and families including refugees?

Introduction

Universal health coverage highlights palliative care as an essential component of health services. However, it is unclear what constitutes person-centered care in populations affected by conflict, as they may have specific concerns in the dimensions of physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing. This study aimed to identify what matters to patients with advanced cancer and family caregivers in Jordan including refugees, to inform appropriate person-centered assessment and palliative care in conflict-affected populations.

Methods

Cross-sectional face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were conducted at two sites in Amman. Adult patients with advanced cancer and family caregivers were purposively sampled to maximize diversity and representation. Interviews were digitally audio recorded, anonymized, and transcribed verbatim for thematic analysis.

Findings

Four themes were generated from 50 patients (22 refugees; 28 Jordanians) and 20 caregivers (7 refugees; 13 Jordanians) (1). Information, communication, and decision-making. Truth-telling and full disclosure from clinicians was valued, and participants expressed concerns that information was not shared in case patients would disengage with treatment. (2) Priorities and concerns for care and support. Participants’ top priority remained cure and recovery (which was viewed as possible). Other priorities included returning to their “normal” life and their “own” country, and to continue contributing to their family. (3) Role of spirituality and Islam. Most participants had strong faith in God and felt that having faith could comfort them. For refugees whose social network was fractured due to being away from home country, prayer and Quran reading became particularly important. (4) Unmet support needs of family caregivers. Family caregivers were affected physically and emotionally by worrying about and caring for the patients. They needed support and training, but often could not access this.

Discussion

Truth-telling is highly valued and essential to achieving person-centered care and informed decision-making. This study also reveals specific concerns in conflict-affected populations, reflecting the experience of prior losses and fracturing of existing social networks and support. The role of religion is crucial in supporting refugee communities, and consideration should be paid to the needs of patients and caregivers when caring for a patient at home without access to their communities of origin and the support they accessed.

A Fuzzy Hybrid MCDM Approach for Assessing the Emergency Department Performance during the COVID-19 Outbreak

The use of emergency departments (EDs) has increased during the COVID-19 outbreak, thereby evidencing the key role of these units in the overall response of healthcare systems to the current pandemic scenario. Nevertheless, several disruptions have emerged in the practical scenario including low throughput, overcrowding, and extended waiting times. Therefore, there is a need to develop strategies for upgrading the response of these units against the current pandemic. Given the above, this paper presents a hybrid fuzzy multicriteria decision-making model (MCDM) to evaluate the performance of EDs and create focused improvement interventions. First, the intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (IF-AHP) technique is used to estimate the relative priorities of criteria and sub-criteria considering uncertainty. Then, the intuitionistic fuzzy decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (IF-DEMATEL) is employed to calculate the interdependence and feedback between criteria and sub-criteria under uncertainty, Finally, the combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) is implemented to rank the EDs and detect their weaknesses to device suitable improvement plans. The aforementioned methodology was validated in three emergency centers in Turkey. The results revealed that the most important criterion in ED performance was ER facilities (14.4%), while Procedures and protocols evidenced the highest positive D + R value (18.239) among the dispatchers and is therefore deemed as the main generator within the performance network.

Effects of COVID-19 on Pediatric Cancer Care: A Multicenter Study of 11 Middle Eastern Countries

During the COVID-19 pandemic, major challenges are facing pediatric cancer centers regarding access to cancer centers, continuity of the anti-cancer therapy, hospital admission, and infection protection precautions. Pediatric oncologists actively treating children with cancer from 29 cancer centers at 11 countries were asked to answer a survey from May 2020 to August 2020 either directly or through the internet. COVID-19 pandemic affected the access to pediatric cancer care in the form of difficulty in reaching the center in 22 (75.9%) centers and affection of patients' flow in 21 (72.4%) centers. Health care professionals (HCP) were infected with COVID-19 in 20 (69%) surveyed centers. Eighteen centers (62%) modified the treatment guidelines. Care of follow-up patients was provided in-hospital in 8(27.6%) centers, through telemedicine in 10 (34.5%) centers, and just delayed in 11 (38%) centers. Pediatric oncologists had different expectations about the future effects of COVID-19 on pediatric cancer care. Seventy-six percent of pediatric oncologists think the COVID-19 pandemic will increase the use of telemedicine. Fifty-five percent of pediatric oncologists think if the COVID-19 pandemic persists, we will need to change chemotherapy protocols to less myelosuppressive ones. Collaborative studies are required to prioritize pediatric cancer management during COVID-19 era.

The worldwide impact of COVID-19 on cancer care: A meta-analysis of surveys published after the first wave of the pandemic

Background

The rapid and global spread of COVID-19 posed a massive challenge to healthcare systems, which came across the need to provide high-intensity assistance to thousands of patients suffering from SARS-CoV-2 infection while assuring continuous care for all other diseases. This has been of particular importance in the oncology field. This study explores how oncology centers responded to the pandemic at a single center level by assessing surveys addressing different aspects of cancer care after the pandemic outbreak.

Methods

We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the cancer care surveys published until December 11th, 2020. Data were analyzed according to three main areas of interest, namely health care organization, including cancellation/delay and/or modification of scheduled treatments, cancellation/delay of outpatient visits, and reduction of overall cancer care activities; routine use of preventive measures, such as personal protective equipment (PPE) by both patients and health care workers, and systematic SARS-CoV-2 screening by nasopharyngeal swabs; and implementation of telemedicine through remote consultations.

Findings

Fifty surveys reporting data on 9150 providers from 121 countries on 5 continents were included. Cancellation/delay of treatment occurred in 58% of centers; delay of outpatient visits in 75%; changes in treatment plans in 65%; and a general reduction in clinical activity in 58%. Routine use of PPE by patients and healthcare personnel was reported by 81% and 80% of centers, respectively; systematic SARS-CoV-2 screening by nasopharyngeal swabs was reported by only 41% of centers. Virtual visits were implemented by the majority (72%) of centers.

Interpretation

These results describe the negative impact of COVID-19 on cancer care, the rapid response of cancer centers in terms of preventive measures and alternative treatment approaches such as telemedicine, and confirm that surveys can provide the valuable, low-cost and immediate information that critical situations require.

Palliative Care in 2020 & Beyond Workshop: an expert symposium to develop palliative care advocacy in Turkey

BACKGROUND

In 2014, the World Health Assembly called for improved access to palliative care (PC) as a core component of healthcare systems. Still, in 2019 the development of PC activism in Turkey was patchy in scope, care provision is isolated and services are limited in relation to population size. This workshop was aimed to increase understanding of the PC approach in cancer and to discuss holistic strategies for implementing PC for cancer in Turkey.

METHODS

The workshop hosted in February 2020 at Ankara was attended by 80 healthcare professionals, bureaucrats, and international PC experts. Panel discussions were held to determine the current status, shortcomings and specify solutions for future PC in cancer in Turkey.

RESULTS

Positive developments in PC after 2010 were acknowledged. Yet PC services are insufficient and mostly unavailable in the less developed regions. PC centers embedded in oncology hospitals were run by oncologists and follows classical cancer treatment protocol. It has emerged that the future need for specialized pc will be greater than anticipated. The latest regulations and the National Pallia-Turk project will provide a framework to develop nationwide PC activism. The barriers are; limited training, lack of integration into cancer care, public ignorance, and legislative issues to Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) orders. The contextual suggestions are; all healthcare workers must acquire a minimum knowledge and skills of PC. Home-based PC should be timely and responsive, coordination among patient's care stakeholders, Hospital-based PC for intensive symptom control or reduce caregiver burden. simultaneous cancer and PC to avoid late referral, legal arrangements for advance directives and DNR orders, and public awareness via mass media initiatives.

SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS

The workshop recommendation substantially contributes to the existence of PC policy and guidelines; will be useful for the development of comprehensive PC activism to address the future need of PC in Turkey.

[Strategies, guidelines and recommendations for coping with the COVID-19 pandemic in palliative and hospice care facilities. Results of a scoping review]

Palliativ- und Hospizeinrichtungen sind durch die COVID-19-Pandemie besonderen Herausforderungen ausgesetzt. Gründe dafür sind insbesondere das hohe Alter und bestehende Vorerkrankungen der Patienten sowie ein körperlich naher Kontakt zwischen Mitarbeitern und Patienten.

Ziel der Arbeit

Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist es, bestehende Strategien, Richtlinien und Empfehlungen zum Umgang mit den Herausforderungen der COVID-19-Pandemie in der Palliativ- und Hospizversorgung zu ermitteln, die in Deutschland und anderen Ländern zum Einsatz kommen.

Material und Methoden

Im Rahmen eines Scoping Reviews wurden die Datenbanken PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science und PsycInfo durchsucht. Zusätzlich wurde „graue Literatur“ über Google Search und Google Scholar recherchiert. Eingeschlossen wurden alle deutsch- und englischsprachigen Artikel im Zeitraum Januar 2020 bis August 2021, die sich auf die stationäre Palliativ- und Hospizversorgung beziehen.

Ergebnisse

Insgesamt wurden 51 Veröffentlichungen in die Analyse aufgenommen. Die identifizierten Maßnahmen lassen sich 10 verschiedenen Kategorien zuordnen: Maßnahmen zur Infektionskontrolle, strukturelle Maßnahmen, Besuchsregelungen, Kommunikationsstrukturen, Schulung und Aufklärung, psychosoziale Unterstützungsmaßnahmen, spezifische Überlegungen für Menschen mit Demenz, vorausschauende Pflegeplanung, Abschiednahme sowie Maßnahmen nach dem Tod.

Diskussion

Bei der Bewältigung der COVID-19-Pandemie dominieren insbesondere Maßnahmen zur Ermöglichung der Kommunikation zwischen Patienten, Mitarbeitern und Angehörigen, psychosoziale Unterstützungsmaßnahmen, strukturelle Maßnahmen und Empfehlungen zur Schulung und Aufklärung aller Beteiligten. Strategien zur Palliativversorgung von Menschen mit Demenz in Pandemiezeiten sowie zu Abschiednahme und Trauerbewältigung von Hinterbliebenen finden weniger Beachtung.

Progress in palliative care for cancer in Turkey: a review of the literature

BACKGROUND

The demographic transition in Turkey is shifting the burden of diseases towards non-communicable diseases including cancer. Palliative care (PC) as a component of Universal Health Coverage assures patient and family-centred care provision throughout the spectrum of cancer.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to make a detailed evaluation of the progress achieved since the mid-90s and the current situation of cancer PC in Turkey.

METHODS

A literature review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Google Scholar, The Turkish Academic Network and Information Centre databases, Ministry of Health documents, Council of Higher Education's thesis 01/1995 to 07/2020. The information was categorised into the six domains: history of the cancer PC; law and regulations; education and research; opioid use; patient care and palliative centres; public awareness, psychosocial support and end of life ethics.

RESULTS

Of 27,489 studies, 331 met the inclusion criteria. The majority were published in the Turkish language and were journal articles. The findings showed that the development of PC in Turkey can be divided into three stages: early initiatives before 2000, the dissemination stage, 2000-2010 and the advanced stage after 2010. There is evidence of progress in terms of legal regulations, opioid use and number of PC services and research output. However, there is still a need for improvement in professional education, public awareness and end of life care.

CONCLUSION

There is evidence of progress, barriers and opportunities. However, bringing research into practice is needed for scale-up and integration of PC in cancer care in Turkey.

National cancer control plans across the Eastern Mediterranean region: challenges and opportunities to scale-up

National cancer control planning is crucial for countries in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region. This region is challenged with an increase in cancer incidence leading to substantial disease burden, premature deaths, and increasing health-care costs in most countries. Huge inequity in cancer control planning and implementation exists between and within the countries. Over half of the countries (12 [55%] of 22) have standalone comprehensive National Cancer Control Plans and six (27%) have non-communicable disease plans that include cancer. The implementation of cancer plans has common challenges related to weak governance structure, few coordination mechanisms within countries, and inadequate human and financial resources. In most countries, the plan is not costed. Yet, the majority of countries (20 [91%]) reported having fully or partially funded plans. Additionally, political instability and conflicts affecting over half of the countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region have enormously affected cancer planning and implementation, both among the affected countries and those that host large numbers of refugees. In this Policy Review, we used the WHO regional framework for action on cancer to systematically analyse the status of cancer control planning and implementation across the six domains of cancer control, from prevention to palliation. We highlight the gaps, and the opportunities for bridging these gaps, to achieve scale-up on implementation of cancer control programmes in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Comparative study of COVID-19 situation between lower-middle-income countries in the eastern Mediterranean region

Background and aims

The COVID-19 health crisis has created a disastrous situation worldwide. All nations are facing this pandemic, including eastern Mediterranean countries. The aim of this study is to assess and compare the impact of this devastating pandemic on lower-middle-income countries in the eastern Mediterranean region, identify the leading causes of its spread, examine the various risk factors associated with its virulence in each country, and provide effective intervention strategies to contain it.

Methods

Using the analysis of variance method, this research compares infection, case fatality, recovery, and positivity rates in seven countries, namely, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Djibouti, Pakistan, Sudan, and Palestine. It focuses on their daily reported confirmed incidents, recoveries, deaths, and tests.

Results

The results highlight the significant differences in the effect of COVID-19 in these countries. Regarding the infection rate, Djibouti and Palestine have the highest rate, which could be related to the high poverty and the young population in these countries. However, it has been demonstrated that Tunisia, Djibouti, Egypt, and Sudan have the greatest case fatality rate in this comparison, which might be attributed to the relatively old population in Tunisia, the co-morbidity in Egypt, and the deficiency of the healthcare system in Djibouti and Sudan. Furthermore, the comparison of the recovery rate in these countries indicates that Djibouti has the highest recovery rate, which might be due to the young population.

Conclusion

This work allows us to come up with recommendations that could support policymakers to act efficiently in containing the pandemic flare-up.

Preparedness to Face the COVID-19 Pandemic in Hospice and Palliative Care Services in the Asia-Pacific Region: A Rapid Online Survey

BACKGROUND

Hospice and palliative care services provision for COVID-19 patients is crucial to improve their life quality. There is limited evidence on COVID-19 preparedness of such services in the Asia-Pacific region.

AIM

To evaluate the preparedness and capacity of hospice and palliative care services in the Asia-Pacific region to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHOD

An online cross-sectional survey was developed based on methodology guidance. Asia-Pacific Hospice and Palliative Care Network subscribers (n = 1551) and organizational members (n = 185) were emailed. Descriptive analysis was undertaken.

RESULTS

Ninety-seven respondents completed the survey. Around half of services were hospital-based (n = 47, 48%), and public-funded (n = 46, 47%). Half of services reported to have confirmed cases (n = 47, 49%) and the majority of the confirmed cases were patients (n = 28, 61%). Staff perceived moderate risk of being infected by COVID-19 (median: 7/10). > 85% of respondents reported they had up-to-date contact list for staff and patients, one-third revealed challenges to keep record of relatives who visited the services (n = 30, 31%), and of patients visited in communities (n = 29, 30%). Majority of services (60%) obtained adequate resources for infection control except face mask. More than half had no guidance on Do Not Resuscitate orders (n = 59, 66%) or on bereavement care for family members (n = 44, 51%).

CONCLUSION

Recommendations to strengthen the preparedness of palliative care services include: 1) improving the access to face mask; 2) acquiring stress management protocols for staff when unavailable; 3) reinforcing the contact tracing system for relatives and visits in the community and 4) developing guidance on patient and family care during patient's dying trajectory.

Public knowledge, beliefs, psychological responses, and behavioural changes during the outbreak of COVID-19 in the Middle East

Objective:

To evaluate the knowledge, believes, psychological and behavioural impact of COVID-19 on the general population in the Middle East, exploring how it impacted public lives.

Methods:

A descriptive cross-sectional online survey was sent to a convenience sample in the Middle East through social media (Facebook and WhatsApp) between 16^th of June and 30^th of June 2020. The questionnaire was designed to collect the demographic, participant’s source of information regarding COVID-19, knowledge and believes about COVID-19, the psychological consequences of COVID-19, impact of COVID-19 on participant’s behaviour. The final version of the questionnaire was further tested for content validity by experts in the field.

Results:

A total of 2,061 participants completed the survey, with the majority being females (n=1394, 67.6%), from urban areas (n=1896, 92%) and the majority were from countries of The Levant (n=1199, 58.1%), followed by the Arabian Peninsula (n=392, 19.1%), Iraq (n=300, 14.6%) and Egypt (n=138, 6.7%). Few participants (3.0%) reported to have been infected and many (n=1847, 89.6%) were committed to quarantine at home. Social media platforms were the most common sources of information (41.2%). Many (63%) believed that COVID-19 is a biological weapon and were afraid of visiting crowded places (85%). The majority avoided public facilities (86.9%) such as prayer places and believed that the news about COVID-19 made them anxious (49.5%).

Preparedness and Capacity of Indian Palliative Care Services to Respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Online Rapid Assessment Survey

BACKGROUND

COVID-19 has been causing a high burden of suffering for patients and families. There is limited evidence on the preparedness of Indian palliative care services for the pandemic.

AIM

This study aimed to assess the preparedness and capacity of Indian palliative care services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

A cross-sectional online survey was developed based on prior evidence and international health regulations. It was emailed to the Indian Palliative Care Association members and investigators' professional networks in India. One participant per palliative care service was requested. Descriptive analysis was used.

RESULTS

Representatives of 78 palliative care services completed the survey. Three in four services had COVID-19 case definition and adapted their protocols for infection control (75%). About half of the services (55%) reported concerns about achieving appropriate hand hygiene in the community. More than half of the services (59%) had capacity to train nonspecialists for symptom control and psychological support. About half of the services reported that they had plans to redeploy staff (56%) and resources (53%) in the case of outbreaks. Two-fifths of the services used paper records to store an updated contact list of staff (40%) and did not have designated focal contacts for information update (40%). Staff anxiety related to personal infection risk and family care was relatively high (median score = 7 on a 1-10 scale).

CONCLUSION

We recommend the following resource allocation to enable palliative care services to support the Indian health system in delivering essential care in this and future pandemics: (1) infection control, especially in the community; (2) training using existing clinical protocols to strengthen palliative care across the health system; and (3) redeployment plans.
