A review of SERS coupled microfluidic platforms: From configurations to applications

Microfluidic systems have attracted considerable attention due to their low reagent consumption, short analysis time, and ease of integration in comparison to conventional methods, but still suffer from shortcomings in sensitivity and selectivity. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) offers several advantages in the detection of compounds, including label-free detection at the single-molecule level, and the narrow Raman peak width for multiplexing. Combining microfluidics with SERS is a viable way to improve their detection sensitivity. Researchers have recently developed several SERS coupled microfluidic platforms with substantial potential for biomolecular detection, cellular and bacterial analysis, and hazardous substance detection. We review the current development of SERS coupled microfluidic platforms, illustrate their detection principles and construction, and summarize the latest applications in biology, environmental protection and food safety. In addition, we innovatively summarize the current status of SERS coupled multi-mode microfluidic platforms with other detection technologies. Finally, we discuss the challenges and countermeasures during the development of SERS coupled microfluidic platforms, as well as predict the future development trend of SERS coupled microfluidic platforms.

Recent progress in SERS monitoring of photocatalytic reactions

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical technique renowned for its ultra-high sensitivity. Extensive research in SERS has led to the development of a wide range of SERS substrates, including plasmonic metals, semiconductors, metal organic frameworks, and their assemblies. Some of these materials are also excellent photocatalysts, and by taking advantage of their bifunctional characteristics, the photocatalytic processes that occur on their surface can be monitored in situ via SERS. This provides us with unique opportunities to gain valuable insights into the intricate details of the photocatalytic processes that are challenging to access using other techniques. In this review, we highlight key development in in situ and/or real-time SERS-tracking of photocatalytic reactions. We begin by providing a brief account of recent developments in SERS substrates, followed by discussions on how SERS can be used to elucidate crucial aspects of photocatalytic processes, including: (1) the influence of the surrounding media on charge carrier extraction; (2) the direction of charge carrier transfer; (3) the pathway of photocatalytic activation; and (4) differentiation between the effects of photo-thermal and energetic electrons. Additionally, we discuss the benefits of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) due to the ability to achieve high-spatial-resolution measurements. Finally, we address major challenges and propose potential directions for the future of SERS monitoring of photocatalytic reactions. By leveraging the capabilities of SERS, we can uncover new insights into photocatalytic processes, paving the way for advancements in sustainable energy and environmental remediation.

Amplitude-Resolved Single Particle Spectrophotometry: A Robust Tool for High-Throughput Size Characterization of Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Plasmonic nanoparticles have a wide range of applications in science and industry. Despite the numerous synthesis methods reported in the literature over the last decades, achieving precise control over the size and shape of large nanoparticle populations remains a challenge. Since variations in size and shape significantly affect the plasmonic properties of nanoparticles, accurate metrological techniques to characterize their morphological features are essential. Here, we present a novel spectrophotometric method, called Amplitude-Resolved Single Particle Spectrophotometry, that can measure the individual sizes of thousands of particles with nanometric accuracy in just a few minutes. This new method, based on the measurement of the scattering amplitude of each nanoparticle, overcomes some of the limitations observed in previous works and theoretically allows the characterization of nanoparticles of any size with a simple extra calibration step. As proof of concept, we characterized thousands of spherical nanoparticles of different sizes. This new method shows excellent accuracy, with less than a 3% discrepancy in direct comparison with transmission electron microscopy. Although the effectiveness of this method has been demonstrated with spherical nanoparticles, its real strength lies in its adaptability to more complex geometries by using an alternative analytical method to the one described here.

Branched Aluminum Nanocrystals with Internal Hot Spots: Synthesis and Single-Particle Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Owing to their unique and sustainable surface plasmonic properties, Al nanocrystals have attracted increasing attention for plasmonic-enhanced applications, including single-particle surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). However, whether Al nanocrystals can achieve single-particle SERS is still unknown, mainly due to the synthetic difficulty of Al nanocrystals with internal gaps. Herein, we report a regrowth method for the synthesis of Al nanohexapods with tunable and uniform internal gaps for single-particle SERS with an enhancement factor of up to 1.79 × 10⁸. The uniform branches of the Al nanohexapods can be systematically tuned regarding their dimensions, terminated facets, and internal gaps. The Al nanohexapods generate hot spots concentrated in the internal gaps due to the strong plasmonic coupling between the branches. A single-particle SERS measurement of Al nanohexapods shows strong Raman signals with maximum enhancement factors comparable to that of Au counterparts. The large enhancement factor indicates that Al nanohexapods are good candidates for single-particle SERS.

Simple Method for Optical Detection and Characterization of Surface Agents on Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles

In this article, we propose a simple method to calculate electrical permittivity and refractive index of surface agents of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), in which it is possible to find the refractive index of surface agents shell by using the absorption peak of the gold nano-colloid. One of the usual tests for detection of surface agents is colorimetric methods based on the change of color of Au NPs. The color change is mainly due to the shift of localized surface plasmon resonance which is related to electrical interactions of surface agents. Although there are many mathematical models for simulating the absorption spectrum and calculating the plasmonic peak, using them is not simple and possible for everyone due to the need for programming. Here, the necessary simulations have been performed for different values ​​of refractive index of surface agents and particle size, and absorption peaks have been obtained. Using numerical methods, a simple formula is obtained between the wavelength of plasmonic peak, the ratio of hydrodynamic diameter to Feret size of the particles, and the refractive index of the surface agents. This method can help researchers to obtain the refractive index and consequently the type or concentration of surface agents around Au NPs without the need for programming or complex mathematical operations. It can also open new horizons in analyzing colorimetric diagnosis of biological agents such as viral antibodies, antigens, and other biological agents.

GaAs Nanowire Photodetectors Based on Au Nanoparticles Modification

A high-performance GaAs nanowire photodetector was fabricated based on the modification of Au nanoparticles (NPs). Au nanoparticles prepared by thermal evaporation were used to modify the defects on the surface of GaAs nanowires. Plasmons and Schottky barriers were also introduced on the surface of the GaAs nanowires, to enhance their light absorption and promote the separation of carriers inside the GaAs nanowires. The research results show that under the appropriate modification time, the dark current of GaAs nanowire photodetectors was reduced. In addition, photocurrent photodetectors increased from 2.39 × 10-10 A to 1.26 × 10-9 A. The responsivity of GaAs nanowire photodetectors correspondingly increased from 0.569 A∙W-1 to 3.047 A∙W-1. The reasons for the improvement of the photodetectors' performance after modification were analyzed through the energy band theory model. This work proposes a new method to improve the performance of GaAs nanowire photodetectors.

Plasmonic Hybrid Nanostructures in Photocatalysis: Structures, Mechanisms, and Applications

(Sun)Light is an abundantly available sustainable source of energy that has been used in catalyzing chemical reactions for several decades now. In particular, studies related to the interaction of light with plasmonic nanostructures have been receiving increased attention. These structures display the unique property of localized surface plasmon resonance, which converts light of a specific wavelength range into hot charge carriers, along with strong local electromagnetic fields, and/or heat, which may all enhance the reaction efficiency in their own way. These unique properties of plasmonic nanoparticles can be conveniently tuned by varying the metal type, size, shape, and dielectric environment, thus prompting a research focus on rationally designed plasmonic hybrid nanostructures. In this review, the term "hybrid" implies nanomaterials that consist of multiple plasmonic or non-plasmonic materials, forming complex configurations in the geometry and/or at the atomic level. We discuss the synthetic techniques and evolution of such hybrid plasmonic nanostructures giving rise to a wide variety of material and geometric configurations. Bimetallic alloys, which result in a new set of opto-physical parameters, are compared with core-shell configurations. For the latter, the use of metal, semiconductor, and polymer shells is reviewed. Also, more complex structures such as Janus and antenna reactor composites are discussed. This review further summarizes the studies exploiting plasmonic hybrids to elucidate the plasmonic-photocatalytic mechanism. Finally, we review the implementation of these plasmonic hybrids in different photocatalytic application domains such as H₂ generation, CO₂ reduction, water purification, air purification, and disinfection.

Heterogeneous Nanoplasmonic Amplifiers for Photocatalysis’s Application: A Theoretical Study

The higher cost of Ag and Au and their resonance frequency shift limitation opened the way to find an alternative solution by developing new nanohybrid antenna based on silicon and silicon dioxide coated with metallic nanoparticles. The latter has been recently solicited as a promising configuration for more large-scale plasmonic utilisation. This work reports a multitude of fascinating new phenomenon on LSPR on silicon antenna wires coated with core-shell nanospheres and the studying of the nanoplasmonics amplifiers to control optical and electromagnetic properties of materials. The LSPR modes and their interaction with the silicon nanowires are studied using numerical methods. The suggested configuration offers resonance covering the UV-visible and NIR regions, making them an adaptable addition to the nanoplasmonics toolbox.

Plasmon-Driven Oxidative Coupling of Aniline-Derivative Adsorbates: A Comparative Study of para-Ethynylaniline and para-Mercaptoaniline

Plasmon-driven photocatalysis has emerged as a paradigm-shifting approach, based upon which the energy of photons can be judiciously harnessed to trigger interfacial molecular transformations on metallic nanostructure surfaces in a regioselective manner with nanoscale precision. Over the past decade, the formation of aromatic azo compounds through plasmon-driven oxidative coupling of thiolated aniline-derivative adsorbates has become a testbed for developing detailed mechanistic understanding of plasmon-mediated photochemistry. Such photocatalytic bimolecular coupling reactions may occur not only between thiolated aniline-derivative adsorbates but between their nonthiolated analogues as well. How the nonthiolated adsorbates behave differently from their thiolated counterparts during the plasmon-driven coupling reactions, however, remains largely unexplored. Here, we systematically compare an alkynylated aniline-derivative, para-ethynylaniline, to its thiolated counterpart, para-mercaptoaniline, in terms of their adsorption conformations, structural flexibility, photochemical reactivity, and transforming kinetics on Ag nanophotocatalyst surfaces. We employ surface-enhanced Raman scattering as an in situ spectroscopic tool to track the detailed structural evolution of the transforming molecular adsorbates in real time during the plasmon-driven coupling reactions. Rigorous analysis of the spectroscopic results, further aided by density functional theory calculations, lays an insightful knowledge foundation that enables us to elucidate how the alteration of the chemical nature of metal-adsorbate interactions profoundly influences the transforming behaviors of the molecular adsorbates during plasmon-driven photocatalytic reactions.

The Photocatalytic Performance of Ag-Decorated SiO2 Nanoparticles (NPs) and Binding Ability between Ag NPs and Modifiers

This study demonstrates a method for synthesizing Ag-decorated SiO2 NPs, which combined surface modification and electroless plating. The binding ability between the Ag NPs and modifiers was also investigated for the first time. The resulting products were characterized by electron microscopy and a UV–Visible spectrophotometer, which confirmed that OH− modified composite has the most uniform coating of Ag NPs and the largest Ag elemental composition. The efficiency of degrading methylene blue (MB) under visible light for 60 min was above 99%. The normalized reaction constant also confirmed the experimental results. In brief, this study verifies an optimal surface modifier of the binding ability with Ag NPs and the feasibility of this structure to effectively absorb the solar spectrum and further apply it to the photodegradation reaction.

Study the plasmonic property of gold nanorods highly above damage threshold via single-pulse spectral hole-burning experiments

Intense femtosecond laser irradiation reshapes gold nanorods, resulting in a persistent hole in the optical absorption spectrum of the nanorods at the wavelength of the laser. Single-pulse hole-burning experiments were performed in a mixture of nanorods with a broad absorption around 800 nm with a 35-fs laser with 800 nm wavelength and 6 mJ/pulse. A significant increase in hole burning width at an average fluence of 10⁶ J/m² has been found, suggesting a tripled damping coefficient of plasmon. This shows that the surface plasmonic effect still occurs at extremely high femtosecond laser fluences just before the nanorods are damaged and the remaining 10% plasmonic enhancement of light is at the fluence of 10⁶ J/m², which is several orders of magnitude higher than the damage threshold of the gold nanorods. Plasmon-photon interactions may also cause an increase in the damping coefficient.

Design, Fabrication and Applications of Electrospun Nanofiber-Based Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrate

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an advanced and powerful analysis tool. Due to the advantages of high sensitivity, high resolution, and nondestructive testing, it has been widely used in physics, chemistry, material science and other fields. In recent years, substantial progress has been made in developing flexible platforms for the design and fabrication of SERS substrates. One important kind of the flexible platforms is based on electrospun nanofibers. Electrospun nanofibers not only have unique advantages such as easy preparation, high porosity and large specific surface area, but also can increase the number of hotspots when combined with precious metal nanomaterials, thereby enhancing the SERS signal and expanding the application scope. In this review, we firstly focus on two strategies for the fabrication of metal nanostructure decorated in/on the electrospun nanofibers, namely in-situ and ex-situ. Then the applications of these SERS substrates in the fields of quantitative analysis, monitoring chemical reactions and recyclable detection are introduced in detail. Finally, the challenges as well as perspectives are presented to offer a guideline for the future exploration of these SERS substrates. We expect that it will provide new inspiration for the development of electrospun nanofiber-based SERS substrates.

Plasmonic Hot Electron-Mediated Hydrodehalogenation Kinetics on Nanostructured Ag Electrodes

An attractive field of plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs) is developing rapidly, but there is still incomplete understanding of how to control the kinetics of such a reaction related to hot carriers. Here, we chose 8-bromoadenine (8BrAd) as a probe molecule of hot electrons to investigate the influence of the electrode potential, laser wavelength, and power on the PMCR kinetics on silver nanoparticle-modified silver electrodes. Plasmonic hot electron-mediated cleavage of the C-Br bond in 8BrAd has been investigated by combining in situ electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The experimental and theoretical results reveal that the energy position of plasmon relaxation-generated hot electrons can be modulated conveniently by applied potentials and laser light. This allows the proposal of a mechanism of modulating the matching energy of the hot electron of plasmon relaxation to promote the efficiency of PMCRs in electrochemical interfaces. Our work will be helpful to design surface plasmon resonance photoelectrochemical reactions on metal electrode surfaces of nanostructures with higher efficiency.

Plasmon catalytic PATP coupling reaction on Ag-NPs/graphite studied via in situ electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Surface curvature-dependent adsorption and aggregation of fluorescein isothiocyanate on gold nanoparticles

The interaction between metallic nanoparticles and fluorescent molecules and its influence on the optical properties of the particles/molecules have been intensively investigated because of their biology and sensing applications. Here, we studied the adsorption and aggregation of a commonly used dye, fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), on gold nanoparticles of various diameters. It was observed that the adsorption of FITC on relatively large gold nanoparticles (≥15 nm in diameter) induced quenching in the two-photon fluorescence (TPF) emission from the FITC molecules, while smaller-sized gold nanoparticles (1.6 nm) had no such effect. This difference was interpreted by the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the FITC molecules and the larger gold nanoparticles. At the same time, it was observed that the ratio of TPF quenching was notably higher than the ratio of the FITC molecules chemically adsorbed on the large gold particles. This unexpected observation revealed that the aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching also contributed significantly to the attenuation of the TPF emission. Time-dependent TPF attenuation during the interaction of FITC and the larger gold nanoparticles was recorded and used to confirm this interpretation. With this experimental evidence, a clear picture of the interaction of the FITC molecules on the gold surface was presented: FITC molecules chemically adsorbed on the small gold nanoparticles. However, the relatively larger surface curvature hindered the aggregation of the FITC molecules on the small gold nanoparticles. On the surface of the larger gold nanoparticles, both adsorption and aggregation occured. The influence of the surface curvature on the interfacial structure of the adsorbed molecules on nanoparticles was discussed.

Plasmon-Mediated Chemical Reactions on Nanostructures Unveiled by Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Surface plasmons (SPs) originating from the collective oscillation of conduction electrons in nanostructured metals (Au, Ag, Cu, etc.) can redistribute not only the electromagnetic fields but also the excited carriers (electrons and holes) and heat energy in time and space. Therefore, SPs can engage in a variety of processes, such as molecular spectroscopy and chemical reaction. Recently, plenty of demonstrations have made plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs) a very active research field and make it as a promising approach to facilitate light-driven chemical reactions under mild conditions. Concurrently, making use of the same SPs, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with a high surface sensitivity and energy resolution becomes a powerful and commonly used technique for the in situ study of PMCRs. Typically, various effects induced by SPs, including the enhanced electromagnetic field, local heating, excited electrons, and excited holes, can mediate chemical reactions. Herein, we use the para-aminothiophenol (PATP) transformation as an example to elaborate how SERS can be used to study the mechanism of PMCR system combined with theoretical calculations. First, we distinguish the chemical transformation of PATP to 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) from the chemical enhancement mechanism of SERS through a series of theoretical and in situ SERS studies. Then, we focus on disentangling the photothermal, hot electrons, and "hot holes" effects in the SPs-induced PATP-to-DMAB conversion. Through varying the key reaction parameters, such as the wavelength and intensity of the incident light, using various core-shell plasmonic nanostructures with different charge transfer properties, we extract the key factors that influence the efficiency and mechanism of this reaction. We confidently prove that the transformation of PATP can occur on account of the oxygen activation induced by the hot electrons or because of the action of hot holes in the absence of oxygen and confirm the critical effect of the interface between the plasmonic nanostructure and reactants. The products of these two process are different. Furthermore, we compare the correlation between PMCRs and SERS, discuss different scenario of PMCRs in situ studied by SERS, and provide some suggestions for the SERS investigation on the PMCRs. Finally, we comment on the mechanism studies on how to distinguish the multieffects of SPs and their influence on the PMCRs, as well as on how to power the chemical reaction and regulate the product selectivity in higher efficiencies.

Extraordinary optical fields in nanostructures: from sub-diffraction-limited optics to sensing and energy conversion

Along with the rapid development of micro/nanofabrication technology, the past few decades have seen the flourishing emergence of subwavelength-structured materials and interfaces for optical field engineering at the nanoscale. Three remarkable properties associated with these subwavelength-structured materials are the squeezed optical fields beyond the diffraction limit, gradient optical fields in the subwavelength scale, and enhanced optical fields that are orders of magnitude greater than the incident field. These engineered optical fields have inspired fundamental and practical advances in both engineering optics and modern chemistry. The first property is the basis of sub-diffraction-limited imaging, lithography, and dense data storage. The second property has led to the emergence of a couple of thin and planar functional optical devices with a reduced footprint. The third one causes enhanced radiation (e.g., fluorescence), scattering (e.g., Raman scattering), and absorption (e.g., infrared absorption and circular dichroism), offering a unique platform for single-molecule-level biochemical sensing, and high-efficiency chemical reaction and energy conversion. In this review, we summarize recent advances in subwavelength-structured materials that bear extraordinary squeezed, gradient, and enhanced optical fields, with a particular emphasis on their optical and chemical applications. Finally, challenges and outlooks in this promising field are discussed.

Enhanced Plasmonic Particle Trapping Using a Hybrid Structure of Nanoparticles and Nanorods

Plasmon-enhanced particle trapping was demonstrated using a hybrid structure of nanoparticles and nanorods. In order to intensify localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were deposited on zinc oxide nanorods (ZnONRs). The synergistic effect caused by the hybrid structure was identified experimentally. Numerical analysis revealed that the LSPR-induced photophysical processes such as plasmonic heating and near-field enhancement were improved by the existence of ZnONRs. The role of the ZnONR in enhancing the particle-trapping velocity was explored by examining the scattered electric field, Poynting vector, and temperature gradient over the nanostructures calculated from the simulation. It was found that polystyrene microparticles and Escherichia coli cells were successfully trapped by using the ZnONR/AuNP plasmonic structure. A relatively high dielectric constant and nanorod geometry of ZnO enabled the hybrid substrate to enhance trapping performance, compared with a control case fabricated using only gold nanoislands.

Electrically enhanced hot hole driven oxidation catalysis at the interface of a plasmon-exciton hybrid

In this work, an electro-optical device based on a graphene-Ag nanoparticle hybrid is fabricated as the substrate of graphene mediated surface enhanced Raman scattering (G-SERS) manipulated by the gate and bias voltages. Plasmon-exciton coupling promotes co-driven surface catalytic reactions, where the density of states (DOS) of holes and electrons on graphene is well controlled by the gate voltage, and the kinetic energy of holes and electrons is driven by the bias voltage (or current). Our experimental results reveal that the hot holes on graphene mainly contribute to plasmon-exciton co-driven oxidation reactions. The contribution of hot electrons to oxidation reactions is less important. Our novel electro-optical device can be potentially applied in controlling plasmon-exciton co-driven oxidation or reduction reactions by tuning the gate and bias voltages.

Unified Treatment for Plasmon-Exciton Co-driven Reduction and Oxidation Reactions

Revealing the nature of plasmon-exciton co-driven surface catalytic reactions is important and urgent for developing potential applications in energy and environmental science. In this work, we propose a mechanism for plasmon-exciton co-driven surface catalytic reactions based on our experimental results. We provide a method for a unified treatment for reduction and oxidation reactions, which not only strongly supports our proposed mechanism but also promotes a deeper understanding of plasmon-exciton co-driven surface catalytic reactions.

Plasmon-Induced Conductance Switching of an Electroactive Conjugated Polymer Nanojunction

A plasmonic molecular electronic device, consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanowires bridging an ultramicroelectrode and an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate covered by gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), has been developed. Light irradiation of this device has a dramatic impact on its conductance. Polymer strands, maintained electrochemically in their oxidized, conducting state, reversibly switch to their insulating state upon irradiation by visible-wavelength light, resulting in a sharp decrease in the conductance. The high-conductance state is restored when the light is turned off. Switching depends on the wavelength and the intensity of the incident light. It is due to reversible reduction of the nanosized region of PEDOT nanowires in contact with a gold NP and is attributed to plasmon-induced hot-electron injection into the PEDOT. The high/low conductance ratio can be as great as 1000, and switching requires low light intensity (220 W/m²). These results could open the way to the design of a new family of optoelectronic switches.

Surface plasmon resonance in gold nanoparticles: a review

In the last two decades, plasmon resonance in gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) has been the subject of intense research efforts. Plasmon physics is intriguing and its precise modelling proved to be challenging. In fact, plasmons are highly responsive to a multitude of factors, either intrinsic to the Au NPs or from the environment, and recently the need emerged for the correction of standard electromagnetic approaches with quantum effects. Applications related to plasmon absorption and scattering in Au NPs are impressively numerous, ranging from sensing to photothermal effects to cell imaging. Also, plasmon-enhanced phenomena are highly interesting for multiple purposes, including, for instance, Raman spectroscopy of nearby analytes, catalysis, or sunlight energy conversion. In addition, plasmon excitation is involved in a series of advanced physical processes such as non-linear optics, optical trapping, magneto-plasmonics, and optical activity. Here, we provide the general overview of the field and the background for appropriate modelling of the physical phenomena. Then, we report on the current state of the art and most recent applications of plasmon resonance in Au NPs.

Single-molecule detection of dihydroazulene photo-thermal reaction using break junction technique

Charge transport by tunnelling is one of the most ubiquitous elementary processes in nature. Small structural changes in a molecular junction can lead to significant difference in the single-molecule electronic properties, offering a tremendous opportunity to examine a reaction on the single-molecule scale by monitoring the conductance changes. Here, we explore the potential of the single-molecule break junction technique in the detection of photo-thermal reaction processes of a photochromic dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene system. Statistical analysis of the break junction experiments provides a quantitative approach for probing the reaction kinetics and reversibility, including the occurrence of isomerization during the reaction. The product ratios observed when switching the system in the junction does not follow those observed in solution studies (both experiment and theory), suggesting that the junction environment was perturbing the process significantly. This study opens the possibility of using nano-structured environments like molecular junctions to tailor product ratios in chemical reactions.

The conductance across single-molecule junctions is highly dependent on the electronic properties of the molecule in question. Here the authors use this fact to monitor a photo-thermal reaction by analysing break junction data, and observe significant differences compared to solution state behaviour.

Recent advances in surface plasmon-driven catalytic reactions

Surface plasmons, the free electrons' collective oscillations, have been used in the signal detection and analysis of target molecules, where the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) can produce a huge EM field, thus enhancing the SERS signal.

Tracking the Fate of Surface Plasmon Resonance-Generated Hot Electrons by In Situ SERS Surveying of Catalyzed Reaction

Plasmonic catalysis is an emerging process that utilizes surface plasmon resonance (SPR) process to harnesses solar energy for the promotion of catalyzed reactions. In most cases, SPR generated hot electrons (HEs) play an indispensable role in this solar-chemical energy shift process. Therefore, understanding the effectiveness of the HEs in promoting chemical reactions, and identifying the key factors that contribute to this utilization efficiency is of profound importance. Herein, the authors outline an in situ surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy protocol to track the fate of HEs. This is based on the unheeded HEs-acceleration nature of the p-nitirothiophenol hydrogenation reaction. By this way, the authors discover that unlike Au@Pd nanostructures which experience a 20-fold increase in rate constant, HEs primary leak to surrounding H⁺ /O species through Ag pinholes in Ag@Pd. This work sheds light on why Ag is seldom employed as a plasmonic cocatalyst, and provides a new viewpoint to design plasmonic nanocatalysts with efficient light utilization.

The Influence of Particle Size Distribution and Shell Imperfections on the Plasmon Resonance of Au and Ag Nanoshells

Au and Ag nanoshells are of interest for a wide range of applications. The plasmon resonance of such nanoshells is the property of interest and can be tuned in a broad spectral regime, ranging from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared. To date, a large number of manuscripts have been published on the optics of such nanoshells. Few of these, however, address the effect of particle size distribution and metal shell imperfections on the plasmon resonance. Both are inherent to the chemical synthesis of metal nanoshells and therefore to a large extent unavoidable. It is of vital importance to understand their effect on the plasmon resonance, since this determines the scope and limitations of the technology and may have a direct impact on the application of such particles. Here, we elucidate the effect of particle size distribution and imperfections in the metal shell on the plasmon resonance of Au and Ag nanoshells. The size of the polystyrene core and the thickness of the Au and Ag shells are systematically varied to study their influence on the plasmon resonance, and the results are compared to values obtained through optical simulations using extended Mie theory and finite element method. Discrepancies between theory and practice are studied in detail and discussed extensively. Quantitative information on the minimum thickness of the metal shell, which is required to realize a satisfactory plasmon resonance of a metal nanoshell, is provided for Au and Ag.

Surface- and Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy in Catalysis

Surface- and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS and TERS) techniques exhibit highly localized chemical sensitivity, making them ideal for studying chemical reactions, including processes at catalytic surfaces. Catalyst structures, adsorbates, and reaction intermediates can be observed in low quantities at hot spots where electromagnetic fields are the strongest, providing ample opportunities to elucidate reaction mechanisms. Moreover, under ideal measurement conditions, it can even be used to trigger chemical reactions. However, factors such as substrate instability and insufficient signal enhancement still limit the applicability of SERS and TERS in the field of catalysis. By the use of sophisticated colloidal synthesis methods and advanced techniques, such as shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, these challenges could be overcome.

Selective plasmon-driven catalysis for para-nitroaniline in aqueous environments

The plasmon-driven oxidation of amine (-NH2) groups and the reduction of nitro (-NO2) groups on a nanostructured metal surface in an aqueous environment have been reported experimentally and theoretically. The question of which process occurs first in the aqueous environment is an interesting question in the field of plasmon-related photochemistry. Para-nitroaniline (PNA), with both nitro (-NO2) and amine (-NH2) groups, is the best candidate for studying the priority of the plasmon-driven oxidation and the reduction reactions in an aqueous environment. Using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy, our experimental results and theoretical simulations reveal that PNA is selectively catalyzed to 4,4'-diaminoazobenzene (DAAB) through the plasmon-assisted dimerization of the nitro (-NO2) group into an azo group in an aqueous environment. This indicates that the plasmon-driven reduction of the nitro (-NO2) group clearly occurs before the oxidation of the amine (-NH2) group in an aqueous environment. The plasmon-driven reduction of PNA to DAAB is a selective surface catalytic reduced reaction in aqueous environment.

Ultrafast and nonlinear surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Ultrafast surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has the potential to study molecular dynamics near plasmonic surfaces to better understand plasmon-mediated chemical reactions such as plasmonically-enhanced photocatalytic or photovoltaic processes. This review discusses the combination of ultrafast Raman spectroscopic techniques with plasmonic substrates for high temporal resolution, high sensitivity, and high spatial resolution vibrational spectroscopy. First, we introduce background information relevant to ultrafast SERS: the mechanisms of surface enhancement in Raman scattering, the characterization of plasmonic materials with ultrafast techniques, and early complementary techniques to study molecule-plasmon interactions. We then discuss recent advances in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopies with ultrafast pulses with a focus on the study of molecule-plasmon coupling and molecular dynamics with high sensitivity. We also highlight the challenges faced by this field by the potential damage caused by concentrated, highly energetic pulsed fields in plasmonic hotspots, and finally the potential for future ultrafast SERS studies.

Interesting polarization-independent SERS detection performance induced by the rotation symmetry of multiparticle nanostructures

In this work, on the basis of finite difference time domain simulations and group theory, by employing regular nanosphere trimers as the main examples, we analyse and discuss the polarization-independent surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) phenomenon arising from the rotation symmetry of coined metallic nanomultimers. The results demonstrate why the rotationally symmetrical nanomultimers can show polarization-independent SERS performance. Because of the dramatically hybridized polarization-independent SERS performance over the whole 360° range, rotationally symmetrical coined metal nanomultimers, such as regular trimers, regular triangular tetramers and regular pentamers, are reliable and reproducible SERS substrates, which have the potential for convenient and flexible practical SERS detection without the need for optimally incident polarization outside the laboratory setting.

Propagating Surface Plasmon Polaritons: Towards Applications for Remote-Excitation Surface Catalytic Reactions

Plasmonics is a well-established field, exploiting the interaction of light and metals at the nanoscale; with the help of surface plasmon polaritons, remote-excitation can also be observed by using silver or gold plasmonic waveguides. Recently, plasmonic catalysis was established as a new exciting platform for heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Recent reports present remote-excitation surface catalytic reactions as a route to enhance the rate of chemical reactions, and offer a pathway to control surface catalytic reactions. In this review, we focus on recent advanced reports on silver plasmonic waveguide for remote-excitation surface catalytic reactions. First, the synthesis methods and characterization techniques of sivelr nanowire plasmonic waveguides are summarized, and the properties and physical mechanisms of plasmonic waveguides are presented in detail. Then, the applications of plasmonic waveguides including remote excitation fluorescence and SERS are introduced, and we focus on the field of remote-excitation surface catalytic reactions. Finally, forecasts are made for possible future applications for the remote-excitation surface catalysis by plasmonic waveguides in living cells.

Reversible coupling of 4-nitroaniline molecules to 4-aminothiophenol functionalized on Ag nanoparticle/graphene oxide nanocomposites through the plasmon assisted chemical reaction

In this study, we demonstrate the formation of azo compounds on a composite of silver nanoparticles and graphene oxides (Ag@G) through a plasmon-assisted coupling reaction between different amine compounds.

Sensitivity and Reusability of SiO2 NRs@ Au NPs SERS Substrate in Trace Monochlorobiphenyl Detection

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect is quite preferred to detect trace pollutants, and reusable SERS substrate is of important practical value. In this research, a kind of effective SiO2 nanorods (NRs)@ Au nanoparticles (NPs) substrate was fabricated completely with physical methods, and it was quite sensitive so that 1 × 10(-6) M monochlorobiphenyl (CB) could be detected. Furthermore, congeners of CB could be detected by reusing this kind of SERS substrate, and the cleaning treatment between every two detections was very simple. The excellent performance of the reusable SERS substrate indicated its great application potential.
