The role of trait mindfulness in quality of life and asthma control among adolescents with asthma

Trait Mindfulness and Mindfulness Practices in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes: Descriptive and Comparative Study

INTRODUCTION

Study describes mindfulness (trait and practices) and compares levels of trait mindfulness (low/high) and practices (yes/no) on demographic, clinical characteristics, and diabetes-related outcomes among adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

METHODS

Adolescents completed a survey on demographics, clinical data, trait mindfulness/practices, diabetes-specific stress, and diabetes self-management (DSM). Glycemic control (A1c) obtained from medical records. T and χ² tests were applied for comparative analyses.

RESULTS

129 adolescents (12-18 years) reported moderately high levels of mindfulness (31 ± 8; range, 10-40). One-third (30%) reported having experience with mindfulness practices (formal, informal, and religious). Adolescents who reported higher levels of trait mindfulness had higher insulin pump usage (p =.005), less diabetes-specific stress (p <.001), greater DSM (p =.006), and less A1c (p =.013). Adolescents who reported more types of mindfulness practices had greater DSM scores.

DISCUSSION

Adolescents with higher levels of trait mindfulness and with more types of mindfulness practices had better diabetes-related outcomes. Introducing mindfulness training tailored to adolescents with T1D should be examined.

Parents' Acceptance of Learning about Mindfulness for Managing Pediatric Asthma

Background: Emerging research suggests mindfulness may reduce stress and asthma symptoms in children, yet there is a gap in understanding parental views towards learning about mindfulness. Objective: This study aimed to compare the perceived acceptance to learn about mindfulness among parents of children with and without asthma, and to understand differences across income levels. Methods: This was a national, cross-sectional, online survey of parents of children 0–18 years. Acceptance was measured with questions on whether parents believe mindfulness could be beneficial while parenting, and if they would be willing to learn about mindfulness. Comparisons of mindfulness acceptance between income level were conducted using chi-square and Fisher’s exact test. Results: Parents of children with asthma were more likely to be interested in learning about mindfulness from their health care provider compared to those without asthma (46% vs. 38%, p < 0.0001). At all income levels examined in the study, parents (63–75%) of children with asthma indicated that they agreed or strongly agreed that mindfulness can be beneficial when parenting. Conclusion: Findings suggest an opportunity to incorporate mindfulness teaching into asthma care for pediatric patients of all income levels.

Understanding the challenges faced by adolescents and young adults with allergic conditions: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Adolescence represents a vulnerable time for individuals with asthma and allergic conditions. They suffer an unexpected degree of morbidity. This systematic review aimed to understand the challenges faced by adolescents and young adults with these conditions.

METHODS

A systematic literature search was undertaken across eight databases. References were checked by two reviewers for inclusion. Study data were extracted, and their quality was assessed in duplicate. A narrative meta-synthesis was undertaken.

RESULTS

A total of 108 papers describing 106 studies were retrieved, most focused on asthma. Five themes were identified across studies: (a) Health-related quality of life-impairment was associated with poor disease control, psychosocial issues, adolescent-onset allergic disease and female sex; (b) Psychological factors-asthma and food allergy were associated with anxiety and depression, atopic dermatitis was associated with suicidal ideation, and that parental emotional support may be protective; (c) Adherence-suboptimal adherence was associated with older age, barriers to medication usage, poor symptom perception and failure to take responsibility, and positive factors were routines, simpler treatment regimes, better knowledge and perceptions about medications; (d) Self-management-facilitated by education, knowledge and a positive attitude; and (e) Supportive relationships-families could modify barriers to adherence and foster positive views about self-management, adolescents suggested that their peers should be more involved in supporting them, and adolescents also wished to have support from nonjudgemental healthcare professionals.

CONCLUSIONS

We have some understanding of the challenges faced by adolescents with asthma, less so for other allergic conditions. This knowledge will be used to support guidelines for managing adolescents.

An Integrative Review of Yoga and Mindfulness-Based Approaches for Children and Adolescents with Asthma

PROBLEM

Asthma affects almost 15% of children in the United States. Despite the availability of treatments and educational methods, children with asthma continue to report an impaired quality of life, including symptoms of anxiety and inability to participate in physical activity. As complementary health approaches are becoming more popular and show promise in the management of many chronic diseases, the purpose of this integrative review is to examine the state of the science regarding popular complementary health approaches- yoga and mindfulness- for children and adolescents with asthma.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

A comprehensive search of five databases for peer reviewed articles was performed to identify experimental and non-experimental studies. The search for each database was performed from the inception of each to January 2020 and limited to the English language. The search included terminology that addressed the concepts of "asthma", "yoga" and "mindfulness".

SAMPLE

A total of eleven articles met the criteria for review from the years 1991 to 2019.

RESULTS

Nine publications focused on the use of yoga in children and adolescents with asthma and two publications focused on mindfulness in adolescents with asthma.

CONCLUSIONS

Interventions involving either mindfulness or yoga may be effective in reducing stress and anxiety and improving quality of life and lung function in this population.

IMPLICATIONS

Mindfulness intervention studies in the pediatric and adolescent asthma population are warranted as are additional studies that include the use of yoga with skills in mindfulness in order to evaluate their physiological and psychological effects.

Evaluating the role of mindfulness in terms of asthma-related outcomes and depression and anxiety symptoms among individuals with asthma

The aim of the current study was to examine the unique role of mindfulness skills in terms of: (1) asthma-related outcomes (i.e., asthma control, asthma quality of life); (2) depression symptoms; and (3) anxiety symptomatology (i.e., anxiety sensitivity, panic symptoms, global anxiety) among non-smoking adults with current asthma. Participants were 61 (61.9% female; Mage = 34.72 years, SD = 13.58, range = 18-65) non-smoking adults with current asthma who completed a battery of self-report measures. Results indicated that, after controlling for the effects of race and age, greater ability to describe present moment experiences was significantly associated with better asthma-related quality of life and lower levels of anxiety symptoms. Though mindfulness skills together were associated with lower levels of panic symptoms, there were no significant individual associations between specific skills and panic symptoms. Greater nonjudgment of present moment experiences was associated with lower levels of anxiety and anxiety sensitivity. Greater nonreactivity was significantly associated with lower levels of depression symptoms and anxiety sensitivity. Lastly, a greater ability to observe present moment experiences was associated with lower levels of anxiety sensitivity. Mindfulness was not significantly associated with asthma control. These findings suggest that it may be useful to target the mindfulness skills of describing, nonjudgment, and nonreactivity among individuals with asthma, particularly those with elevated levels of anxiety and depression, in order to improve psychological and asthma-related outcomes.
