Abstract
Social media is increasingly used for health queries and subspecialist selection, but physicians receive little training in its use. This case study describes use of the free data tool Facebook Audience Insights to understand population demographics relevant to an orthopedic practice. Facebook Audience Insights was used to compare demographics and activity patterns of two patient samples typical of total joint arthroplasty (TJA)-young TJA (ages 55-64 years) and Medicare TJA (age ≥65 years)-in May 2020. Creation of a professional Facebook page is described accompanied by the demonstration of Audience Insights to analyze regional user patterns. A local sample of Facebook users was then compared with a single orthopedic practice's Facebook traffic. Facebook use is common among patients undergoing TJA, and the proportion of self-identified women increases with age (young TJA, 53% women; Medicare TJA, 63% women). Women are more interactive Facebook users across all age ranges, with more frequent comments, "Liked" pages, and advertisement clicks. Analysis of a local Facebook population revealed a lower proportion of TJA-aged patients than the national cohort; however, TJA-aged patients represented 38% of the practice's Facebook page traffic, with a predominance of visitors being women (26% women, 12% men). Facebook demonstrates a high prevalence of users in the typical age range for TJA. Those users were common on an orthopedic practice Facebook page, suggesting social media may be an effective medium for engaging patients. [Orthopedics. 2024;47(2):e79-e84.].

Abstract
PURPOSE Online health-related support groups have increasingly become a regular resource for patients and caregivers; however, the content of these forums is largely unknown to medical teams. The purposes of this study were to (1) review posts from scoliosis discussion forums to establish common themes related to the care experience of patients with scoliosis and (2) understand how common themes vary among pediatric and adult patients, as well as caregivers. METHODS Posts were collected from two public scoliosis forums. Analysis was performed using grounded theory-a methodology that relies on the repeated analyses of qualitative data to identify recurring concepts, which are then coded and grouped into categories and ultimately central themes that seek to synthesize the relationships between categories. Information posts were reviewed by a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who performs scoliosis surgery for factual basis or misinformation. RESULTS Analysis of 911 posts revealed five central themes. The two most common themes among patients ≥ 18 and caregivers involve seeking out emotional support and information about surgical treatment. Patients < 18 frequently sought out emotional support but were also largely interested in information about bracing. The most prevalent theme among all contributors involved seeking out emotional support. There was very little medical misinformation found within posts. CONCLUSION Scoliosis forums serve as an informal outlet where patients and families can offer emotional support and share experiences. Physicians should provide direct emotional support to patients and offer these forums as a resource, without significant concerns about propagating medical misinformation.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate online, self-reported pudendal nerve or perineal injuries related to the use of a perineal post during hip arthroscopy. Methods Public posts on Reddit and the Health Organization for Pudendal Education were searched to identify anonymous individuals reporting symptoms of pudendal nerve or perineal injury following hip arthroscopy. Included posts were by any individual with a self-reported history of hip arthroscopy who developed symptoms of pudendal nerve injury or damage to the perineal soft tissues. Demographic information and details about a person's symptoms and concerns were collected from each post. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results Twenty-three online posts reported on a perineal post-related complication following hip arthroscopy. Sex information was available in 16 (70%) posts (8 male, 8 female). Twenty-two posts reported a sensory injury, and 4 posts reported a motor injury with sexual consequences (sexual dysfunction, dyspareunia, impotence). Symptom duration was available in 15 (65%) posts (8 temporary, 7 permanent). Permanent symptoms included paresthesia of the perineum or genitals (7) and sexual complaints (5). Two posts stated they were counseled preoperatively about the possibility of this injury. Zero patients reported that a postless hip arthroscopy alternative was an option made available to them before surgery. Conclusions A high incidence of permanent pudendal nerve, perineal skin, and genitourinary/sexual complications are self-reported and discussed online by patients who have undergone post-assisted hip arthroscopy. These patients report being uninformed and undereducated about the possibility of sustaining a post-related complication. No patient reported being informed of postless hip arthroscopy preoperatively. Clinical Relevance Identifying and evaluating self-reported patient information in online medical forums can provide important information about patient experiences and outcomes.

Abstract
Aims Social media is a popular resource for patients seeking medical information and sharing experiences. periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is the gold-standard treatment for symptomatic acetabular dysplasia with good long-term outcomes. However, little is known regarding the perceived outcomes of PAO on social media. The aims of this study were to describe the perceived outcomes following PAO using three social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly known as Twitter). Methods Facebook, Instagram, and X posts were retrospectively collected from 1 February 2023. Facebook posts were collected from the two most populated interest groups: "periacetabular osteotomy" and "PAO Australia." Instagram and X posts were queried using the most popular hashtags: #PAOwarrior, #periacetabularosteotomy, #periacetabularosteotomyrecovery, #PAOsurgery, and #PAOrecovery. Posts were assessed for demographic data (sex, race, location), perspective (patient, physician, professional organization, industry), timing (preoperative vs postoperative), and perceived outcome (positive, negative, neutral). Results A total of 1,054 Facebook posts, 1,003 Instagram posts, and 502 X posts were consecutively assessed from 887 unique authors. The majority (63.3%) of these posts were from patients in the postoperative period, with a median of 84 days postoperatively (interquartile range 20 to 275). The longest follow-up timeframe postoperatively was 20 years. Regarding perceived outcomes, 52.8% expressed satisfaction, 39.7% held neutral opinions, and 7.5% were dissatisfied. Most dissatisfied patients (50.9%) reported pain (chronic or uncontrolled acute) as an attributing factor. Conclusion Most PAO-perceived surgical outcomes on social media had a positive tone. Findings also indicate that a small percentage of patients reported negative perceived outcomes. However, dissatisfaction with PAO primarily stemmed from postoperative pain. Social media posts from other sources (physicians, hospitals, professional organizations, etc.) trend towards neutrality. Healthcare providers must consider the social media narratives of patients following PAO, as they may reveal additional outcome expectations and help improve patient-centred care, create informed decision-making, and optimize treatment outcomes.

Abstract
Introduction Social media outlets such as TikTok (TT) and Instagram (IG) have surged as a method to disseminate information. More recently, healthcare professionals have targeted this space as a means to provide medical education and advice. With the ever-growing content on these applications, there is significant variability and quality of material available, which can lead to the dissemination of misinformation. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and popularity of content on common orthopaedic pathology on TT and IG. Methods Content on TT and IG related to six common orthopaedic conditions - achilles tendon tear, ACL tear, meniscus tear, tennis elbow, rotator cuff tear, and ankle sprains - was evaluated between April and June 2022. The top ten posts for the top two associated hashtags for each condition were reviewed. The quality of each post was analyzed using the DISCERN instrument, rating each on a scale of 1 to 5. Each post was characterized by the author's profession (physician, physical therapist, chiropractor, etc.) and content type (educational, testimonial, personal, promotional, and entertainment). Popularity and engagement metrics such as "comments," "likes," and "shares" were also collected. Results There were 165,666,490 views on TT and 9,631,015 views on IG amongst the six common aforementioned orthopaedic conditions. Content created by physicians had less overall engagement (16.1%) compared to content created by non-physicians (83.9%). The quality of content on average was low (mean misinformation index 2.04 ± 1.08 (1-5)1. Physician-created posts in comparison to non-physician posts were significantly more accurate (mean misinformation index score 3.38 ± 1.12 vs 1.89 ± 0.94, p<0.0001). Conclusions Common orthopaedic conditions such as Achilles tendon tears, ACL tears, and meniscus tears are frequently the focus of content posted on TT and IG; however, this information is often not medically accurate. Increased physician engagement may help to rectify this misinformation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is little data on patient and caregiver perceptions of spine surgery in children and youth. This study aims to characterize the personal experiences of patients, caregivers, and family members surrounding pediatric spine surgery through a qualitative and quantitative social media analysis. METHODS The Twitter application programming interface was searched for keywords related to pediatric spine surgery from inception to March 2022. Relevant tweets and accounts were extracted and subsequently classified using thematic labels. Tweet metadata was collected to measure user engagement via multivariable regression. Sentiment analysis using Natural Language Processing was performed on all tweets with a focus on tweets discussing the personal experiences of patients and caregivers. RESULTS 2424 tweets from 1847 individual accounts were retrieved for analysis. Patients and caregivers represented 1459 (79.0%) of all accounts. Posts discussed the personal experiences of patients and caregivers in 83.5% of tweets. Pediatric spine surgery research was discussed in few posts (n=90, 3.7%). Within the personal experience category, 975 (48.17%) tweets were positive, 516 (25.49%) were negative, and 533 (26.34%) were neutral. Presence of a tag (beta: -6.1, 95% CI -9.7 to -2.5) and baseline follower count (beta<0.001, 95% CI <0.001 to <0.001) significantly affected tweet engagement negatively and positively, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Patients and caregivers actively discuss topics related to pediatric spine surgery on Twitter. Posts discussing personal experience are most prevalent, while posts on research are scarce, unlike previous social media studies. Pediatric spine surgeons can leverage this dialogue to better understand the worries and needs of patients and their families.

Abstract
PURPOSE The goal of this study was to determine the use of social media (SM) among the French spine surgeons. METHODS In 2022, an online questionnaire has been sent to the community of French spine surgeons. All surgeons were asked to answer a 21-question survey about their use of SM in their daily practice. RESULTS Eighty-five surgeons were included, with 80% claiming to use SM. Mean age was 45 ± 10.7. Usage rate significantly differed among experience categories: 85% of younger surgeons and 69% after ten years of experience (p = 0.01). LinkedIn was the most commonly used (78% among SM users), then Facebook (46%). Instagram was less used by most experienced surgeons (p = 0.01). Time spent on SM was more important at home (p < 0.01). About 31% of participants' patients were able to contact their surgeon through SM, mainly through LinkedIn, professional websites and Facebook (respectively 15%, 13% and 12%). Pictural data were shared on SM by 29% of SM users, mainly on LinkedIn (19%), then professional websites (12%). Google reviews were significantly less valued by most experienced surgeons (p = 0.01) but more valued by private practice surgeons (p = 0.009). CONCLUSION 80% of French spine surgeons use social media for professional purposes. However, SM may not be used to its full potential as only 25% of SM-using broadcast pictures and contact their patients through SM. The most popular network is LinkedIn, followed by Facebook. Most experienced surgeons use less SM, particularly Instagram, and value less Google reviews.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the rapid development of social media, effective extraction and analysis of the contents of social media for health care have attracted widespread attention from health care providers. As far as we know, most of the reviews focus on the application of social media, and there is a lack of reviews that integrate the methods for analyzing social media information for health care. OBJECTIVE This scoping review aims to answer the following 4 questions: (1) What types of research have been used to investigate social media for health care, (2) what methods have been used to analyze the existing health information on social media, (3) what indicators should be applied to collect and evaluate the characteristics of methods for analyzing the contents of social media for health care, and (4) what are the current problems and development directions of methods used to analyze the contents of social media for health care? METHODS A scoping review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines was conducted. We searched PubMed, the Web of Science, EMBASE, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and the Cochrane Library for the period from 2010 to May 2023 for primary studies focusing on social media and health care. Two independent reviewers screened eligible studies against inclusion criteria. A narrative synthesis of the included studies was conducted. RESULTS Of 16,161 identified citations, 134 (0.8%) studies were included in this review. These included 67 (50.0%) qualitative designs, 43 (32.1%) quantitative designs, and 24 (17.9%) mixed methods designs. The applied research methods were classified based on the following aspects: (1) manual analysis methods (content analysis methodology, grounded theory, ethnography, classification analysis, thematic analysis, and scoring tables) and computer-aided analysis methods (latent Dirichlet allocation, support vector machine, probabilistic clustering, image analysis, topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and other natural language processing technologies), (2) categories of research contents, and (3) health care areas (health practice, health services, and health education). CONCLUSIONS Based on an extensive literature review, we investigated the methods for analyzing the contents of social media for health care to determine the main applications, differences, trends, and existing problems. We also discussed the implications for the future. Traditional content analysis is still the mainstream method for analyzing social media content, and future research may be combined with big data research. With the progress of computers, mobile phones, smartwatches, and other smart devices, social media information sources will become more diversified. Future research can combine new sources, such as pictures, videos, and physiological signals, with online social networking to adapt to the development trend of the internet. More medical information talents need to be trained in the future to better solve the problem of network information analysis. Overall, this scoping review can be useful for a large audience that includes researchers entering the field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social media is used in health communication by individuals, health professionals, disease centres and other health regulatory bodies. However, varying degrees of information quality are churned out daily on social media. This review is concerned with the quality of Social Media Health Information (SMHI). OBJECTIVE The review sought to understand how SMHI quality issues have been framed and addressed in the literature. Health topics, users and social media platforms that have raised health information quality concerns are reviewed. The review also looked at the suitability of existing criteria and instruments used in evaluating SMHI and identified gaps for future research. METHOD The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and the forward chaining strategy were used in the document search. Data were sourced according to inclusion criteria from five academic databases, namely Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed and MEDLINE. RESULTS A total of 93 articles published between 2000 and 2019 were used in the review. The review revealed a worrying trend of health content and communication on social media, especially of cancer, dental care and diabetes information on YouTube. The review further discovered that the Journal of the American Medical Association, the DISCERN and the Health on the Net Foundation, which were designed before the advent of social media, continue to be used as quality evaluation instruments for SMHI, even though technical and user characteristics of social media differ from traditional portals such as websites. CONCLUSION The study synthesises varied opinions on SMHI quality in the literature and recommends that future research proposes quality evaluation criteria and instruments specifically for SMHI.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to analyze posts shared on Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit referencing scoliosis surgery to evaluate content, tone, and perspective. METHODS Public posts from Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit were parsed in 2020-2021 and selected based on inclusion of the words 'scoliosis surgery' or '#scoliosissurgery. 100 Reddit posts, 5022 Instagram posts, and 1414 tweets were included in analysis. The Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK) python library was utilized to perform computational text analysis to determine content and sentiment analysis to estimate the tone of posts across each platform. RESULTS 46.4% of Tweets were positive in tone, 39.4% were negative, and 13.8% were neutral. Positive content focused on patients, friends, or hospitals sharing good outcomes after a patient's surgery. Negative content focused on long wait times to receive scoliosis surgery. 64.7% of Instagram posts were positive in tone, 16.3% were negative, and 19.0% were neutral. Positive content centered around post-operative progress reports and educational resources, while negative content focused on long-term back pain. 37% of Reddit posts were positive in tone, 38% were negative, and 25% were neutral. Positive posts were about personal post-operative progress reports, while negative posts were about fears prior to scoliosis surgery and questions about risks of the procedure. CONCLUSION This study highlights scoliosis surgery content in social media formats and stratifies how this content is portrayed based on the platform it is on. Surgeons can use this knowledge to better educate and connect with their own patients, thus harnessing the power and reach of social media. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT It has never been easier for patients to obtain information about and to connect with others with a given health issue. Frequently, patients turn to social media. There, more information and emotional support from individuals with similar experiences should empower patients, contributing to a better functional and overall outcome. Unfortunately, social media often contains biased reports and misinformation. PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the footprint of AIS (adolescent idiopathic scoliosis) on the top four social media platforms. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis. METHODS Independent searches were conducted across four major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn) using the keywords "scoliosis" and "#scoliosis" for Instagram. The top 50 posts from each platform were evaluated based on the overall tone of the post (positive, negative, neutral); who made the post (business, patient, family/friend, hospital/physician); the intent of the postcy (advertisement, educate the viewer about scoliosis/disease process/treatments, raise awareness, provide support to patients and their family/friends, promote research); the credentials of the poster [MD, clinician (non-MD), non-clinician, unknown]; the type of media used in the post (text only, picture, video, multiple) and if the post had an external link and what content the link provided (academic, hospital/physician, health news outlet, alternative treatment, personal blog, business, other). RESULTS 196 unique postings were analyzed for the various content criteria. Across all four platforms, the majority of posts were made by a non-clinician (42.8%) representing a business (49.3%), with the intent to educate (32.3%) using a neutral tone (52.5%). Pictures (61%) were the most common media, and 56.3% of all posts contained external links. Often, those links lead to sites promoting alternative treatments (28.8%). In comparison to the overall analysis, Instagram deviated from the patterns the most. Instagram was the only platform with a predominantly positive tone (62%). Here, 71% of the postings came from an actual patient with the intent to describe their experience or daily life with scoliosis (36%). Instagram had the lowest rate of external links (39%) and most of those lead to another person's Instagram account or a personal blog (47%). Hospital and physician groups had the highest presence on YouTube (35%), but the highest MD authorship was on Facebook (28%). CONCLUSION Social media can be a powerful tool to disseminate information and create supportive communities for patients with chronic conditions. Healthcare providers and educators are underutilizing these outlets to reach our patients and help provide them the information and support networks they need.

Abstract
Background: Social media posts regarding ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries and
reconstruction surgeries have increased in recent years. Purpose: To analyze posts shared on Instagram and Twitter referencing UCL injuries and
reconstruction surgeries to evaluate public perception and any trends in
perception over the past 3 years. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: A search of a 3-year period (August 2016 and August 2019) of public Instagram
and Twitter posts was performed. We searched for >22 hashtags and search
terms, including #TommyJohn,
#TommyJohnSurgery, and #tornUCL. A
categorical classification system was used to assess the sentiment, media
format, perspective, timing, accuracy, and general content of each post.
Post popularity was measured by number of likes and comments. Results: A total of 3119 Instagram posts and 267 Twitter posts were included in the
analysis. Of the 3119 Instagram posts analyzed, 34% were from patients, and
28% were from providers. Of the 267 Twitter posts analyzed, 42% were from
patients, and 16% were from providers. Although the majority of social media
posts were of a positive sentiment, over the past 3 years, there was a major
surge in negative sentiment posts (97% increase) versus positive sentiment
posts (9% increase). Patients were more likely to focus their posts on
rehabilitation, return to play, and activities of daily living. Providers
tended to focus their posts on education, rehabilitation, and injury
prevention. Patient posts declined over the past 3 years (–28%), whereas
provider posts increased substantially (110%). Of posts shared by health
care providers, 4% of posts contained inaccurate or misleading
information. Conclusion: The majority of patients who post about their UCL injury and reconstruction
on social media have a positive sentiment when discussing their procedure.
However, negative sentiment posts have increased significantly over the past
3 years. Patient content revolves around rehabilitation and return to play.
Although patient posts have declined over the past 3 years, provider posts
have increased substantially with an emphasis on education.

Abstract
This opinion review considers the prevailing question of whether to screen or not to screen for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. New and improved standards of people-oriented care and person-centredness, as well as improved principles of preventive screening and guideline development, have been postulated and implemented in health care systems and cultures. Recommendations addressing screening for scoliosis differ substantially, in terms of their content, standards of development and screening principles. Some countries have discontinued issuing recommendations. In the last decade, a number of updated and new recommendations and statements have been released. Systematically developed guidelines and recommendations are confronted by consensus and opinion-based statements. The dilemmas and discrepancies prevail. The arguments concentrate on the issues of the need for early detection through screening in terms of the effectiveness of early treatment, on costs and cost-effectiveness issues, scientific and epidemiologic value of screenings, and the credibility of the sources of evidence. The problem matter is of global scale and applies to millions of people. It regards clinical and methodological dilemmas, but also the matter of vulnerable and fragile time of adolescence and, more generally, children's rights. The decisions need to integrate people's values and preferences - screening tests need to be acceptable to the population, and treatments need to be acceptable for patients. Therefore we present one more crucial, but underrepresented in the discussion, issue of understanding and implementation of the contemporary principles of person-centred care, standards of preventive screening, and guideline development, in the context of screening for scoliosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, the diagnosis and management of this condition, may lead to poorer body image and diminished psychosocial functioning. Furthermore, treatment, especially bracing and surgery as well as screening, remain controversial and debated, with an unclear evidence base. Personal experiences in terms of issues such as person-centred care, shared decision making, and patient and public involvement, are contemporarily recognised as highly valued. Nonetheless, people's experiences related to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is an issue underrepresented in current systematic reviews and systematically developed recommendations. There appears a substantial imbalance between a vast amount of biomedical research reports, and sporadic biopsychosocial publications in this field. The objective of this planned scoping review is to explore and map the available evidence from various sources to address a broad question of what is known about experiences of all those touched, directly and indirectly, by the problem of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We based our protocol on the Joanna Briggs Institute's scoping review method, including the Population - Concept - Context framework, to formulate the objectives, research questions, eligibility criteria and conduct characteristics of the study. We will consider any primary study designs, research synthesis reports, as well as narrative reviews and opinion pieces. We will not restrict eligible publications to English language. Search and selection processes will include academic and grey literature searches using multiple electronic databases, search engines and websites, hand searches, and contacting the authors. We will use a customised data charting table and present a narrative synthesis of the results. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Scoping review is a secondary study, aiming at synthesising data from publicly available publications, hence it does not require ethical approval. We will submit the report to a peer-reviewed journal and disseminate it among professionals involved in scoliosis management, guideline and recommendation development, and policymaking.

Abstract
Background The rate of hip arthroscopy has increased significantly in recent years, although understanding of patient perception remains limited. Purpose To analyze posts shared on Instagram and Twitter referencing hip arthroscopy to evaluate perspective, tone, timing, content, visibility, and location. Study Design Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods A search of public posts on Instagram and Twitter was performed over a 1-year period, selected through use of the following hashtags: #hiparthroscopy, #hipscope, and #labralrepair. A total of 1850 Instagram posts and 163 Twitter posts were included in the analysis. A categorical classification system was used for media format (picture or video), perspective (patient, family or friend, physician, hospital or physical therapy group, professional organization, news media, or industry), timing (preoperative, postoperative, nonoperative), perioperative period (within 1 week before or after surgery), tone (positive, negative, or neutral), and content (surgical site, hospital or surgeon, imaging, rehabilitation, activities of daily living (ADLs), return to work, surgical instruments, or education). Post popularity (number of likes) and geographic location were also recorded. Results Of the 1850 Instagram posts analyzed, 91.2% were made by patients, and 52.9% were positive. The most common content included in Instagram posts was rehabilitation, ADLs, and hospital or surgeon. A total of 163 Twitter posts were analyzed, with 59.0% of posts made by physicians. A majority of posts had a positive tone, and the most frequently referenced themes included education, hospital or surgeon, and rehabilitation. Overall, posts originated from 24 different countries. Conclusion The majority of patients who undergo hip arthroscopy have a positive tone when discussing their procedure. Posts commonly focused on rehabilitation, ADLs, hospital or surgeon, and education. This analysis provides insight into patient perspectives toward hip arthroscopy.

Abstract
This mixed-methods study examined variables associated with use of experience-based (i.e., anecdotal) decisional strategies among 85 undergraduate students presented with 2 hypothetical lung cancer scenarios. Participants were asked to think aloud while they made their treatment choice. Eleven decisional strategies were identified and grouped into either data or experience-based strategies. Approximately, 25% of participants used experience-based strategies. Use of experience-based strategies was more likely if the participant reported involvement in the life of someone going through cancer treatment, and if they rated print-based media sources as less important. Use of experience-based strategies was associated with choosing surgery instead of radiation for lung cancer treatment.
