Prayer-Related Dermatoses in Muslims

Prayer rituals are an integral part of the daily lives of Muslims worldwide. This comprehensive review aims to explore the common dermatoses associated with prayer among Muslims and provide insights for dermatologists to facilitate accurate diagnosis and reduce unnecessary investigations. A systematic literature search returned 367 published articles, of which 21 met the inclusion criteria. Friction-induced dermatitis was the most frequently reported dermatosis, primarily affecting the forehead, knees, dorsum of the feet, and lateral malleoli. Friction-related marks often present as hyperpigmented lichenified plaques, and are more common in elderly individuals and males. Cases of contact dermatitis and fungal infections were also reported. Allergic contact dermatitis was linked to perfume application before Friday prayers, whereas fungal infections were attributed to increased water retention between toe webs, possibly related to communal ablution and prayer areas. Awareness of these prayer-related dermatoses enables dermatologists to provide holistic care for diverse populations and targeting specific interventions with respect for patients' religious beliefs. For example, Muslim patients with symptomatic frictional dermatoses may benefit from use of padded prayer rugs, especially diabetic patients whose lesions carry an increased risk of progressing to neuropathic ulcers.

Practices and complications of pubic hair removal among Saudi women

Background

Pubic hair grooming, including the complete removal of pubic hair, has become an increasingly common practice, particularly among young women. Although widespread, there is limited data regarding the methods, products, reasons, and complications of pubic hair removal, particularly among Saudi women. The objective was to examine pubic hair removal practices and the prevalence of its complications among Saudi women living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study conducted at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Saudi women between 16 and 60 years of age who had the ability to read and speak Arabic, were eligible to complete an anonymous and self-administered survey on pubic hair removal practices and its complications.

Results

Between December 2015 and September 2016, 400 Saudi women completed the survey. The age was 26.3 ± 6.9, 16–58 (mean ± SD, range) years. About three quarters (77.0%) self-removed their pubic hair, while the remainder made use of professional personnel in medical clinics (15.5%), beauty salons (5.3%), and professional services at home (2.2%). Many women (41.8%) used a combination of hair removal methods, with non-electric razor as the most common single method used (33.5%), followed by laser (8.7%), sugaring (6.0%), waxing (4.5%), trimming (2.0%), electric razor (2.0%), and cream (1.5%). Three-quarters of women (75.5%) reported complications, and although they were mostly minor injuries, treatment had to be sought for 17.9% of complications. Multivariable analyses showed that no variables remained correlated with the occurrence of complications (age of starting hair removal, income, BMI, level of education, mode of removal, advice on removal).

Conclusions

Saudi women initiate pubic hair removal in early adolescence. While most complications are minor, close to one in five women experience complications.

Thai health care provider knowledge of neonatal male circumcision in reducing transmission of HIV and other STIs

Background

Male circumcision (MC) reduces the risk of female-to-male transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). MC has not been practiced as a disease prevention measure in Thailand probably because of low recognition of its benefits among stakeholders. Neonatal male circumcision (NMC) is simpler, safer and cheaper than adult MC. This study aimed to assess Thai health care provider knowledge of benefits implementing NMC in Thailand.

Methods

Multi-stage sampling identified 16 government hospitals to represent various hospital sizes and regions of the country. Researchers administered a fixed choice questionnaire, developed by the research team based on a previous study, to physician administrators, practicing physicians, and nurses whose jobs involved NMC clinical procedures or oversight. The participants reviewed printed educational materials on the benefits of NMC during questionnaire completion. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi square tests, odds ratios, and logistic regression.

Results

One hundred thirty-three individuals participated in this quantitative study. Only 38 % of the participants agreed that NMC reduced the risk of sexual transmission of HIV while 65 % indicated that they knew that NMC prevented STIs. Most participants recognized the benefits of NMC on hygiene (96 %) as well as cancer prevention (74 %). Major concerns raised were potential trauma to the child, child rights and safety of NMC. After reviewing written information about the benefits of NMC, 59 % of the participants agreed that NMC should be offered in their hospital. Physicians and nurses who had previous experience with circumcising patients of all ages were more reluctant to have NMC performed in their hospital.

Conclusions

A clear policy advocating NMC, thorough preparation of health facilities, and staff training are needed before NMC could be used in Thailand as prevention strategy for HIV and other STIs.
