Ab-initio calculation of structural, electronic, and optical characterizations of the intermetallic trialuminides ScAl3 compound

Computational evaluation of novel XCuH3 (X = Li, Na and K) perovskite-type hydrides for hydrogen storage applications using LDA and GGA approach

Hydrogen energy has attracted a lot of interest from researchers as a sustainable and renewable energy source, but there are some technical challenges related to its storage. Hydride materials demonstrate the ability to store hydrogen adequately and safely. In the current study, we have investigated the structural and optoelectronic properties of the XCuH3 (where X = Li, Na and K) perovskite-type hydride using LDA and GGA formalisms for hydrogen storage application. Electronic properties such as band structure, density of states reveal the metallic character of the studied XCuH3 hydrides. Various optical parameters such as the complex dielectric function, refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption coefficient, reflectivity, optical conductivity, energy loss function, and joint density of states have been computed and compared. The gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity for LiCuH3, NaCuH3 and KCuH3 are found to be 4.11, 3.37 and 2.86 wt%, respectively. The computed values of the gravimetric ratio manifest that XCuH3 hydrides are potential candidates for hydrogen storage applications. These calculations are made for the first time for XCuH3 hydrides and will be inspirational in the future for comparison and for hydrogen storage purposes.

A Density Functional Theory Study of the Physico-Chemical Properties of Alkali Metal Titanate Perovskites for Solar Cell Applications

The urgent need to shift from non-renewable to renewable energy sources has caused widespread interest in photovoltaic technologies that allow us to harness readily available and sustainable solar energy. In the past decade, polymer solar cells (PSCs) and perovskite solar cells (Per-SCs) have gained attention owing to their low price and easy fabrication process. Charge transport layers (CTLs), transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs), and metallic top electrodes are important constituents of PSCs and Per-SCs, which affect the efficiency and stability of these cells. Owing to the disadvantages of current materials, including instability and high cost, the development of alternative materials has attracted significant attention. Owing to their more flexible physical and chemical characteristics, ternary oxides are considered to be appealing alternatives, where ATiO3 materials-a class of ternary perovskite oxides-have demonstrated considerable potential for applications in solar cells. Here, we have employed calculations based on the density functional theory to study the structural, optoelectronic, and magnetic properties of ATiO3 (A=Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) in different crystallographic phases to determine their potential as PSCs and Per-SCs materials. We have also determined thermal and elastic properties to evaluate their mechanical and thermal stability. Our calculations have revealed that KTiO3 and RbTiO3 possess similar electronic properties as half-metallic materials, while LiTiO3 and CsTiO3 are metallic. Semiconductor behavior with a direct band gap of 2.77 eV was observed for NaTiO3, and calculations of the optical and electronic properties predicted that NaTiO3 is the most appropriate candidate to be employed as a charge transfer layer (CTL) and bottom transparent conducting electrode (TCE) in PSCs and Per-SCs, owing to its transparency and large bandgap, whereas NaTiO3 also provided superior elastic and thermal properties. Among the metallic and half-metallic ATiO3 compounds, CsTiO3 and KTiO3 exhibited the most appropriate features for the top electrode and additional absorbent in the active layer, respectively, to enhance the performance and stability of these cells.

Exploration of D022-Type Al3TM(TM = Sc, Ti, V, Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta): Elastic Anisotropy, Electronic Structures, Work Function and Experimental Design

The structural properties, elastic anisotropy, electronic structures and work function of D0₂₂-type Al₃TM (TM = Sc, Ti, V, Y, Zr, Nb, La, Hf, Ta) are studied using the first-principles calculations. The results indicate that the obtained formation enthalpy and cohesive energy of these compounds are in accordance with the other calculated values. It is found that the Al₃Zr is the most thermodynamic stable compound. The mechanical property indexes, such as elastic constants, bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and Vickers hardness are systematically explored. Moreover, the calculated universal anisotropic index, percent anisotropy and shear anisotropic factors of D0₂₂-type Al₃TM are analyzed carefully. It demonstrates that the shear modulus anisotropy of Al₃La is the strongest, while that of Al₃Ta is the weakest. In particular, the density of states at Fermi level is not zero, suggesting that these phases have metal properties and electrical conductivity. More importantly, the mechanisms of correlation between hardness and Young’s modulus are further explained by the work function. Finally, the experimental design proves that D0₂₂-Al₃Ta has an excellent strengthening effect.

A DFT investigation on electronic structure, charge density, mechanical stability and thermodynamic properties of XAl3 (X =Sc, Yb and Lu) intermetallic compounds

The electronic structures of AuCu₃-type XAl₃ (X = Sc, Yb, Lu) compounds have been calculated using full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method within the density functional theory. The calculations have been performed using PBE-GGA, WC-GGA and PBE-sol GGA approximations. Electronic structures in these materials confirm metallicity. Our estimated ground state properties in case of ScAl₃ are found in good agreement with the experimental values, while for YbAl₃ and LuAl₃ couldn't be compared owing to non-existence of data. Charge density plots illustrate Sc/Yb/Lu-Al bonds are covalent, which signify according to Poisson ratio. For this reason, various elastic modulii, bulk to shear modulus ratios, Cauchy pressures were determined and it was found that XAl₃ compounds show brittle nature. Finally, specific heat capacity, Debye temperature and Grüneisen parameter under pressure (0-15 GPa) and temperature (0-1000 K) are also elucidated using quasi harmonic model.
