Recent development of metal-organic frameworks and their composites in electromagnetic wave absorption and shielding applications

With the rapid development of information and communication industries, the usage of electromagnetic waves has caused the hazard of human health and misfunction of devices. The adsorption and shielding of electromagnetic waves have been achieved in various materials. The unique adjustable spatial structure makes metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) promising for electromagnetic shielding and adsorbing. As MOFs research advances, various large-scale MOF-based materials have been developed. For instance, MOFs spatial structure has been expanded from 2D to 3D to load more ligands. Progress in synthetic methods for MOFs and their derivatives is advancing, with priority on large-scale preparation and green synthesis. This review summarizes the methods for synthesizing MOFs and their derivatives, and explores the effects of MOFs spatial structure on electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and electromagnetic wave absorption capabilities. At the same time, detailed examples are used to focus on the applications of five different MOFs composites in electromagnetic shielding and electromagnetic wave absorption. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of MOFs in the electromagnetic field are introduced, providing a useful reference for the preparation and design of MOFs and their composites for electromagnetic wave processing applications.

The use of bimetallic metal-organic frameworks as restoration materials for pollutants removal from water environment

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (BMOFs) are a class of functional porous materials constructed by coordination between nodes containing two different metal ions and organic ligands. Studies have shown that the catalytic activity of BMOFs is greatly improved owing to the adjustment of charge distribution and the increase of active sites as well as the synergistic effect between the bimetals, and the advantages of their large specific surface area, high porosity, unique structure and dispersed active centres make them available as important organic materials applied in the field of wastewater treatment. In this review, the preparation and construction methods for BMOFs in recent years are summarized, and we focus on their removal of different types of pollutants in the aqueous environment, including ions, dyes, pharmaceuticals or personal care products, phenolic compounds and microorganisms, as well as their corresponding removal mechanisms. In addition, we provide an outlook on their future opportunities and challenges in wastewater treatment.

Recyclable Fe3O4@UiO-66-PDA core-shell nanomaterials for extensive metal ion adsorption: Batch experiments and theoretical analysis

With the ever-increasing challenge of heavy metal pollution, the imperative for developing highly efficient adsorbents has become apparent to remove metal ions from wastewater completely. In this study, we introduce a novel magnetic core-shell adsorbent, Fe3O4@UiO-66-PDA. It features a polydopamine (PDA) modified zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66) synthesized through a simple solvothermal method. The adsorbent boasts a unique core-shell architecture with a high specific surface area, abundant micropores, and remarkable thermal stability. The adsorption capabilities of six metal ions (Fe3+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, and Cd2+) were systematically investigated, guided by the theory of hard and soft acids and bases. Among these, three representative metal ions (Fe3+, Pb2+, and Hg2+) were scrutinized in detail. The activated Fe3O4@UiO-66-PDA exhibited exceptional adsorption capacities for these metal ions, achieving impressive values of 97.99 mg/g, 121.42 mg/g, and 130.72 mg/g, respectively, at pH 5.0. Moreover, the adsorbent demonstrated efficient recovery from aqueous solution using an external magnet, maintaining robust adsorption efficiency (>80%) and stability even after six cycles. To delve deeper into the optimized adsorption of Hg2+, density functional theory (DFT) analysis was employed, revealing an adsorption energy of -2.61 eV for Hg2+. This notable adsorption capacity was primarily attributed to electron interactions and coordination effects. This study offers valuable insights into metal ion adsorption facilitated, by magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) materials.

Design and application of metal organic frameworks for heavy metals adsorption in water: a review

The growing apprehension surrounding heavy metal pollution in both environmental and industrial contexts has spurred extensive research into adsorption materials aimed at efficient remediation. Among these materials, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have risen as versatile and promising contenders due to their adjustable properties, expansive surface areas, and sustainable characteristics, compared to traditional options like activated carbon and zeolites. This exhaustive review delves into the synthesis techniques, structural diversity, and adsorption capabilities of MOFs for the effective removal of heavy metals. The article explores the evolution of MOF design and fabrication methods, highlighting pivotal parameters influencing their adsorption performance, such as pore size, surface area, and the presence of functional groups. In this perspective review, a thorough analysis of various MOFs is presented, emphasizing the crucial role of ligands and metal nodes in adapting MOF properties for heavy metal removal. Moreover, the review delves into recent advancements in MOF-based composites and hybrid materials, shedding light on their heightened adsorption capacities, recyclability, and potential for regeneration. Challenges for optimization, regeneration efficiency and minimizing costs for large-scale applications are discussed.

Remediation of multifarious metal ions and molecular docking assessment for pathogenic microbe disinfection in aqueous solution by waste-derived Ca-MOF

The present study demonstrates an eco-friendly and cost-effective synthesis of calcium terephthalate metal-organic frameworks (Ca-MOF). The Ca-MOF were composed of metal ions (Ca2+) and organic ligands (terephthalic acid; TPA); the former was obtained from egg shells, and the latter was obtained from processing waste plastic bottles. Detailed characterization using standard techniques confirmed the synthesis of Ca-MOF with an average particle size of 461.9 ± 15 nm. The synthesized Ca-MOF was screened for its ability to remove multiple metal ions from an aqueous solution. Based on the maximum sorption capacity, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+ ions were selected for individual parametric batch studies. The obtained results were interpreted using standard isotherms and kinetic models. The maximum sorption capacity (qm) obtained from the Langmuir model was found to be 644.07 ± 47, 391.4 ± 26, and 260.5 ± 14 mg g-1 for Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+, respectively. Moreover, Ca-MOF also showed an excellent ability to remove all three metal ions simultaneously from a mixed solution. The metal nodes and bonded TPA from Ca-MOF were dissociated by the acid dissolution method, which protonated and isolated TPA for reuse. Further, the crystal structure of Ca-MOF was prepared and docked with protein targets of selected pathogenic water-borne microbes, which showed its disinfection potential. Overall, multiple metal sorption capability, regeneration studies, and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity confirmed the versatility of synthesized Ca-MOF for industrial wastewater treatment.

Simultaneous adsorption of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from synthetic wastewater using NaP and LTA zeolites prepared from biomass fly ash

Herein, NaP and LTA zeolites were successfully synthesised from woody biomass ash with alkali fusion-assisted hydrothermal method by altering the NaOH/ash ratio, crystallisation time and crystallisation temperature. In order to reduce the synthesis costs, NaP zeolite was synthesised with no additional source of aluminium and silicon. The synthesised zeolites were utilized for the monocomponent and simultaneous adsorption of Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) ions. The maximum adsorbed amount of metals had the trend Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II) > Zn(II) for both NaP and LTA zeolite. The kinetic data fit well to the pseudo-second order model indicating that chemisorption is the rate-limiting step. The isotherm data were well described with Sips and Redlich-Peterson models indicating a non-ideal heterogeneous adsorption process. Maximum adsorption capacity of NaP zeolite was 42.9 mg/g for Cu(II) and 117.3 mg/g for Cd(II), while LTA had 140.1 mg/g and 223.5 mg/g for Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions, respectively.

Hybrid porous material supported in a cellulose acetate polymeric membrane for the direct immersion thin-film microextraction of parabens in water

A simple and sensitive direct immersion thin-film microextraction (DI-TFME) method based on MIL-101(Cr) modified with carbon nanofibers supported in cellulose acetate (CA-MIL-101(Cr)@CNFs) polymeric membrane was developed for the extraction and preconcentration of parabens in environmental water samples. A high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) was used for the determination and quantification of methylparaben (MP) and propylparaben (PP). The factors affecting the DI-TFME performance were investigated using central composite design (CCD). The linearity of the DI-TFME/HPLC-DAD method obtained under optimal conditions was 0.04-0.04-500 µg/L with a correlation coefficient (R2) greater than 0.99, respectively. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) for methylparaben were 11 ng/L and 37 ng/L; for propylparaben, they were 13 ng/L and 43 ng/L, respectively. The enrichment factors were 93.7 and 123 for methylparaben and propylparaben. The intraday (repeatability) and interday (reproducibility) precisions expressed as relative standard deviations (%RSD) were less than 5%. Furthermore, the DI-TFME/HPLC-DAD method was validated using real water samples spiked with known concentrations of the analytes. The recoveries ranged from 91.5 to 99.8%, and intraday and interday trueness values were less than ±15%. The DI-TFME/HPLC-DAD approach was effectively used for the preconcentration and quantification of parabens in river water and wastewater samples.

Advantages of Bimetallic Organic Frameworks in the Adsorption, Catalysis and Detection for Water Contaminants

The binary metal organic framework (MOF) is composed of two heterometallic ions bonded to an organic ligand. Compared with monometallic MOFs, bimetallic MOFs have greatly improved in terms of structure, porosity, active site, adsorption, selectivity, and stability, which has attracted wide attention. At present, many effective strategies have been designed for the synthesis of bimetallic MOF-based nanomaterials with specific morphology, structure, and function. The results show that bimetallic MOF-based nanocomposites could achieve multiple synergistic effects, which will greatly improve their research in the fields of adsorption, catalysis, energy storage, sensing, and so on. In this review, the main preparation methods of bimetallic MOFs-based materials are summarized, with emphasis on their applications in adsorption, catalysis, and detection of target pollutants in water environments, and perspectives on the future development of bimetallic MOFs-based nanomaterials in the field of water are presented.

Characteristics of Adsorption/Desorption Process on Dolomite Adsorbent in the Copper(II) Removal from Aqueous Solutions

The removal of hazardous heavy metals that have been released into the environment due to industrial activities has become an important issue in recent years. The presented study concerned the removal of copper(II) ions from aqueous solutions using dolomites. Dolomite is a very attractive adsorbent due to its wide availability, low cost, good adsorption, and environmental compatibility. The paper describes the properties of D-I and D-II dolomites from two different open-cast mines in Poland. The properties of natural adsorbents were determined based on point of zero charges (PZC), elemental analysis of the adsorbent composition, FT-IR, XRD, and SEM spectra analysis. Depending on the initial concentration of the solution used, the adsorption efficiency of copper(II) ions was 58-80% for D-I and 80-97% for D-II. The adsorption mechanism in the case of D-II dolomite was mainly based on ion exchange, while chemisorption dominated the D-I dolomite surface. Considering the possibility of the regeneration and reuse of the adsorbent, dolomite D-II is a better material (the desorption efficiency of copper(II) ions was 58-80%). The adsorption behavior of dolomites has been described using six adsorption isotherms. The best fit was obtained for the Redlich-Peterson, Jovanović, and Langmuir isotherms, indicating that monolayer adsorption occurred. The maximum adsorption capacity for copper(II) was 378 mg/g of D-I and 308 mg/g of D-II.

Cesium salt of tungstophosphoric acid/mesoporous (zirconia-silica) composite for highly efficient synthesis of 7-hydroxy-4-methyl coumarin and removal of methylene blue

The removal of harmful organic dyes from aqueous solutions has drawn the attention of scientists because of the substantial threat they pose to society's worldwide health. Hence, it is crucial to design an adsorbent that is both very effective in removing dyes and has the benefit of being inexpensive. In the present work, Cs salts of tungstophosphoric acid (CPW) supported mesoporous Zr-mSiO₂ (mZS) with varying extents of Cs ions have been prepared by a two-step impregnation technique. Accordingly, a lowering in the surface acidity modes was observed after Cs exchanged protons of H₃W₁₂O₄₀ and formed salts immobilized on the mZS support. After exchanging the protons with Cs ions, the characterization results revealed that the primary Keggin structure was unaltered. Moreover, the Cs exchanged catalysts had higher surface area than the parent H₃W₁₂O₄₀/mZS, suggesting that Cs reacts with H₃W₁₂O₄₀ molecules to create new primary particles with smaller sizes possessing inter-crystallite centers with a higher dispersion degree. With an increase in Cs content and thus a decrease in the acid strength and surface acid density, the methylene blue (MB) monolayer adsorption capacities on CPW/mZS catalysts were increased and reached an uptake capacity of 359.9 mg g^-1 for Cs₃PW₁₂O₄₀/mZS (3.0CPW/mZS). The catalytic formation of 7-hydroxy-4-methyl coumarin was also studied at optimum conditions and it is found that the catalytic activity is influenced by the amount of exchangeable Cs with PW on the mZrS support, which is in turn influenced by the catalyst acidity. The catalyst kept approximately the initial catalytic activity even after the fifth cycle.

Review on arsenic environment behaviors in aqueous solution and soil

Arsenic pollution in environment has always been an important environmental problem that has attracted wide attention in recent years. Adsorption is one of the main methods of treatment for arsenic in the aqueous solution and soil because of the advantages of high efficiency, low cost and wide application. Firstly, this report summarizes the commonly and widely used adsorbent materials such as metal-organic frameworks, layered bimetallic hydroxides, chitosan, biochar and their derivatives. The adsorption effects and mechanisms of these materials are further discussed, and the application prospects of these adsorbents are considered. Meanwhile, the gaps and deficiencies in the study of adsorption mechanism was pointed out. Then, this study comprehensively evaluated the effects of various factors on arsenic transport, including (i) the effects of pH and redox potential on the existing form of As; (ii) complexation mechanism of dissolved organic matter and As; (iii) factors affecting the plant enrichment of As. Finally, the latest scientific researches on microbial remediation of arsenic and the mechanisms were summarized. The review finally enlightens the subsequent development of more efficient and practical adsorption material.

Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks (BMOF) and BMOF- Incorporated Membranes for Energy and Environmental Applications

Bimetallic metal organic frameworks (BMOFs) are a class of crystalline solids and their structure comprises two metal ions in the lattice. BMOFs show a synergistic effect of two metal centres and enhanced properties compared to MOFs. By controlling the composition and relative distribution of two metal ions in the lattice the structure, morphology, and topology of BMOFs could be regulated resulting in an improvement in the tunability of pore structure, activity, and selectivity. Thus, developing BMOFs and BMOF incorporated membranes for applications such as adsorption, separation, catalysis, and sensing is a promising strategy to mitigate environmental pollution and address the looming energy crisis. Herein we present an overview of recent advancements in the area of BMOFs and a comprehensive review of BMOF incorporated membranes reported to date. The scope, challenges as well as future perspectives for BMOFs and BMOF incorporated membranes are presented.

Development of MOF Based Recyclable Photocatalyst for the Removal of Different Organic Dye Pollutants

The preparation of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) has come to the forefront in recent years because of their outstanding physical and chemical properties. Many MOFs such as Zn, Co, Ni, Fe, and Ag, etc., have been successfully synthesized. In this work, we followed the solvothermal assisted route to synthesize Ag-MOF (abbreviated as AMOF) nanosheets and then applied them as a photocatalyst to remove different organic pollutants, namely methyl orange (MO), crystal violet (CV), and methylene blue (MB). Chemical composition, optical properties, morphology, and microstructural analysis were analyzed using XPS, UV-visible spectrophotometer, FESEM, TEM, and EDS, respectively. The structural properties of AMOF nanosheets were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherm analysis were utilized to evaluate the specific surface area and pore size of the AMOF nanosheets. Further, AMOF nanosheets showed notable photocatalytic performance for various dye pollutants degradation. The results confirmed 74.5, 85.5, and 90.7% of MO, CV, and MB dye pollutants removal after 120 min of irradiation with the rate constants (k) of 0.0123, 0.0153, and 0.0158 min^-1, respectively. The effect of superoxide radicals (O₂^-) and photogenerated holes (h⁺) on the organic dye pollutants removal was investigated using radical scavenger trapping studies. Moreover, the stability study also confirmed the recyclability of the photocatalyst. Therefore, the findings of this research present a realizable method to grow AMOF photocatalyst for successful degradation of various dye pollutants.

Cobalt Iron-Metal Organic Framework Coordinated to CMC Aerogel by Solvothermal Method and Application to Tetracycline Antibiotics Adsorption

In order to minimize the adverse impacts on the aquatic environment after treatment process, several attempts have been made to develop biodegradable, easy-to-recover, and environmentally friendly materials. The metal-organic framework material (CoFe-MOF) was developed in the CMC aerogel matrix by solvothermal method and applied in tetracycline antibiotic (TCC) adsorption. The morphological and structural properties of the materials were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR), and  (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller)  (BET) to identify the crystals formed relative to the pristine MOF. The effects of various factors of the adsorption process such as time, pH, amount of adsorbent, and initial concentration of antibiotics were investigated. Results have shown that the adsorption capacity was 188.7 mg.g-1 at pH 4, the initial TCC concentration of 80 g.L-1 and equilibration time of 120 min. The experimental data describing the antibiotic adsorption process follows the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isothermal model. The CoFe-MOF aerogel material can recover and reuse all four cycles, thus it can be considered as a promising material for environmental remediation and other applications. Recent progress on adsorption of cadmium ions from water systems using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an efficient class of porous materials

Various articles have been written about MOFs, which are organic-inorganic polymer structures that are unique in three-dimensional porosity, crystalline structure, and their ability to adsorb cadmium ion pollutants from aqueous solutions. These materials possess active metal sites, highly porous structures, high specific surfaces, high chemical functionality, and porous topologies. It is necessary to study adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and mechanisms in order to better understand the adsorption process. Adsorption kinetics can provide information about the adsorption rate and reaction pathway of adsorbents. Adsorption isotherms analyze the possibility of absorbances based on the Gibbs equation and thermodynamic theories. Moreover, in practical applications, knowledge of the adsorption mechanism is essential for predicting adsorption reactions and designing MOFs structures. In this review, the latest suggested adsorption mechanisms, kinetics, and isotherms of MOFs-based materials for removing cadmium ions are presented. A comparison is then conducted between different MOFs and the mechanisms of cadmium ion removal. We also discuss the future role of MOFs in removing environmental contaminants. Lastly, we discuss the gap in research and limitations of MOFs as adsorbents in actual applications, and probable technology development for the development of cost-efficient and sustainable MOFs for metal ion removal.

A review of synthesis, fabrication, and emerging biomedical applications of metal-organic frameworks

The overwhelming potential of porous coordination polymers (PCP), also known as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), especially their nanostructures for various biomedical applications, have made these materials worth investigating for more applications and uses. MOFs unique structure has enabled them for most applications, particularly in biomedical and healthcare. A number of very informative review papers are available on the biomedical applications of MOFs for the reader's convenience. However, many of those reviews focus mainly on drug delivery applications, and no significant work has been reported on other MOFs for biomedical applications. This review aims to present a compact and highly informative global assessment of the recent developments in biomedical applications (excluding drug-delivery) of MOFs along with critical analysis. Researchers have recently adopted both synthetic and post-synthetic routes for the fabrication and modification of MOFs that have been discussed and analyzed. A critical review of the latest reports on the significant and exotic area of bio-sensing capabilities and applications of MOFs has been given in this study. In addition, other essential applications of MOFs, including photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and antimicrobial activities, are also included. These recently grown emergent techniques and cancer treatment options have gained attention and require further investigations to achieve fruitful outcomes. MOF's role in these applications has been thoroughly discussed, along with future challenges and valuable suggestions for the research community that will help meet future demands.

Mixed-Ligand Strategy for the Creation of Hierarchical Porous ZIF-8 for Enhanced Adsorption of Copper Ions

The adsorption of heavy metals using metal-organic framework-based adsorption technology has been pointed out as a promising technique for the removal of these toxic elements from water. However, their adsorption capacity needs to be enhanced. Thus, the current work reports the effect of using a mixed-ligand strategy on the MOF framework and its effect on the removal of copper ions from water by adding terephthalic acid (BDC) linker to the ZIF-8precursors (2-methylimidazole (mI) and Zn²⁺) under solvothermal synthesis, leading to the formation of a hierarchical microporous mesoporous MOF, named Zn-mI-BDC, which was characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, TGA, BET, and FTIR. As a result, all of these techniques revealed that the addition of a controlled amount of BDC did not alter the crystallinity of ZIF-8, resulting in the creation of a pore size of 4.2 nm. The new hierarchical porous MOF was tested for the adsorption of copper and exhibited an enhanced adsorption capacity compared to pristine ZIF-8 and many other standard adsorbents. The adsorption isotherm matched well with the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting that the adsorption process chemisorption had a dominant role in the adsorption of Cu²⁺ species. Therefore, the current work is considered as an important step toward the use of a mixed-ligand strategy in enhancing the adsorption capacity of heavy metals using MOF materials.

Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks MIL-53(xAl-yFe) as Efficient Catalysts for H2S Selective Oxidation

Catalytic oxidation of H₂S is a crucial green pathway that can fully convert H₂S into value-added elemental S for commercial use. However, achieving high catalytic stability and S selectivity by traditional-metal-based catalysts still remain a major challenge. Herein, a facile one-step solvothermal strategy is designed for the fabrication of bimetallic MIL-53(xAl-yFe) catalysts. The as-synthesized MIL-53(1Al-5Fe) possesses ample coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, which served as efficient catalytic sites for the selective oxidation of H₂S. As a result, the representative MIL-53(1Al-5Fe) achieves a S yield of nearly 100% at 100-160 °C with almost no obvious decrease of catalytic stability in the run of 30 h. Under the defined reaction conditions, the bimetallic metal-organic frameworks are obviously superior to MIL-53(Al) (49.3%) and MIL-53(Fe) (70.5%) in S yield. This study suggests that the introduction of elemental Al into MIL-53(xAl-yFe) could effectively modulate the electronic properties and spatial configuration of the catalysts, further conducing the adsorption and activation of H₂S and thus accelerating the dissociation of H₂S into a key intermediate S* and improving their catalytic performance.

Magnetically recyclable core–shell MOF nanoparticles of Fe3O4@PDA@UIO-66-NH2 grafted by organic acids for intensified cationic dye adsorption

The adsorption mechanism towards MB by the two adsorbents is mainly due to IE at lower solution pH and EA at higher solution pH than their pHpzc.

Preparation of GO/MIL-101(Fe,Cu) composite and its adsorption mechanisms for phosphate in aqueous solution

In this study, MIL-101(Fe), MIL-101(Fe,Cu), and graphene oxide (GO)/MIL-101(Fe,Cu) were synthesized to compose a novel sorbent. The adsorption properties of these three MOF-based composites were compared toward the removal of phosphate. Furthermore, the influencing factors including adsorption time, pH, temperature, and initial concentration on the adsorption capacity of phosphate on these materials as well as the reusability of the material were discussed. The structure of fabricated materials and the removal mechanism of phosphate on the composite material were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, and zeta potential. The results show that the maximum adsorption capacity of phosphate by the composite GO/MIL-101(Fe,Cu)-2% was 204.60 mg·g^-1, which is higher than that of MIL-101(Fe,Cu) and MIL-101(Fe). likewise the specific surface area of GO/MIL-101(Fe,Cu)-2% is 778.11 m²/g is higher than that of MIL-101(Fe,Cuand MIL-101(Fe),which are 747.75 and 510.66 m²/g, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of phosphate is electrostatic attraction, forming coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds. The fabricated material is a promising adsorbent for the removal of phosphate with good reusability.
