Abstract
BACKGROUND Little work has examined how coping efficacy and lung cancer-related social isolation relate to social well-being in the context of a patient's computed tomography (CT) scan. Researchers tested the cross-sectional relationship of social isolation and social well-being, and the longitudinal relationship between coping efficacy and social well-being before CT scans. METHOD 25 patients with lung cancer, within 6 months of their upcoming CT scan, participated. Baseline surveys collected clinical information, demographics, and social isolation; repeated monthly surveys collected coping efficacy and social well-being every 30 days until one's scan. RESULTS [Cross-sectional] High levels of social isolation were associated with low levels of social well-being. [Longitudinal] On months patients reported high coping efficacy, they also reported increases in social well-being. CONCLUSIONS Social interventions may improve well-being among those with lung cancer as our work shows that getting and receiving support are strongly related to well-being in the time surrounding a scan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Regular surveillance imaging is commonly used after curative-intent resection of most solid-organ cancers to enable prompt diagnosis and management of recurrent disease. Given the fear of cancer recurrence, surveillance may lead to distress and anxiety ("scanxiety") but its frequency, severity, and management among cancer survivors are poorly understood. METHODS A systematic review of the PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases was conducted to evaluate existing literature on anxiety and emotional experiences associated with surveillance after curative-intent cancer surgery as well as interventions aimed at reducing scanxiety. RESULTS Across the 22 included studies encompassing 8693 patients, reported rates of scanxiety varied significantly, but tended to decrease as time elapsed after surgery. Qualitative studies showed that scanxiety arises from various factors innate to the surveillance experience and is most prevalent in the scan-to-results waiting period. Common risk factors for scanxiety included sociodemographic and cancer-related characteristics, low coping self-efficacy, pre-existing anxiety, and low patient well-being. Conversely, reassurance was a positive aspect of surveillance reported in several studies. Trials evaluating the impact of interventions all focused on modifying the surveillance regimen compared with usual care, but none led to reduced rates of scanxiety. CONCLUSIONS Although scanxiety is nearly universal across multiple cancer types and patient populations, it is transient and generally limited in severity. Because existing trials evaluating interventions to reduce scanxiety have not identified effective strategies to date, future research is needed to identify interventions aimed at reducing their impact on high-risk individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Patients with an unruptured intracranial aneurysm (UIA) may experience scanxiety around follow-up imaging. We studied the prevalence and temporal pattern of scanxiety, and compared quality of life (QoL) outcomes in patients with and without scanxiety. METHODS We performed a prospective cohort study in a tertiary referral center in the Netherlands between October 2021 and November 2022. We sent questionnaires to patients ≥ 18 years old undergoing UIA follow-up imaging 4 weeks before (T1), immediately after (T2), and 6 weeks after the scan (T3) to assess health-related QoL (HRQoL) and emotional functioning. At T3, we also assessed scanxiety with a purpose-designed questionnaire. We compared differences in QoL outcomes between respondents with and without scanxiety using mixed models. RESULTS Of 158 eligible patients, 106 (67%) participated (mean age 61 years ± 11 [standard deviation], 84 women). Sixty of the 91 respondents (66%) who completed the purpose-designed questionnaire experienced scanxiety. Of the 49 respondents who experienced scanxiety after the scan, it resolved in 22 (45%) within a day after receiving the radiology report. HRQoL did not differ between respondents with or without scanxiety. Emotional functioning was worse for respondents with scanxiety (mean Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale sum score difference at T1, 3.6 [95% CI, 0.9-6.3]; T2, 4.1 [95% CI, 1.5-6.8]; and T3, 4.0 [95% CI, 1.5-6.5]). CONCLUSIONS Two-thirds of the respondents experienced scanxiety around follow-up imaging, which often resolved within a day after receiving results. Patients with scanxiety had similar HRQoL but worse emotional functioning compared to patients without scanxiety. The time between the scan and receiving the results should be minimized to decrease the duration of scanxiety. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT We showed that scanxiety is common in UIA patients, and negatively associated with emotional functioning. Since scanxiety often disappears immediately after receiving the radiology report, it should be communicated to the patient as early as possible to alleviate patients' distress. KEY POINTS • Many patients with an unruptured intracranial aneurysm experience emotional distress around follow-up imaging, termed "scanxiety." • Patients with scanxiety had worse emotional functioning compared to patients without scanxiety. • Scanxiety often resolved within a day after receiving the radiology report.

Abstract
PURPOSE Mesothelioma is an incurable, asbestos-related cancer with a poor prognosis. There is scant evidence about the mental health and well-being impacts on patients and carers living with the illness. This study aimed to investigate mesothelioma's impact on mental health and well-being and the scale of mental health conditions in patients and informal carers. METHODS A mixed-methods design was used: a cross-sectional survey of mesothelioma patients and informal carers plus semi-structured interviews with patients and carers. The survey used validated scales collecting data on mental health aspects of mesothelioma: the EQ5D to assess health-related quality-of-life; the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale; the PCL-5 to assess Posttraumatic Stress; and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. The datasets were integrated during analysis. RESULTS 96 useable survey responses were received. A clinical level of depression was reported by 29 participants (30.21%), of anxiety by 48 (50%), of posttraumatic distress disorder by 32 (33.33%), and of posttraumatic growth by 34 (35.42%). Carers had worse scores than patients. Three main themes were developed from interviews with 10 patients and 11 carers: 'Prognosis', 'Support from services', and 'Social connections and communication'. CONCLUSIONS Healthcare professionals delivering a mesothelioma diagnosis require regular training in communication skills plus updating in current treatment options, so they provide an appropriate mix of realism and hope. Better signposting to mental health support is needed for patients and carers. Our introduction of posttraumatic growth into the mesothelioma literature is novel. We recommend specialist nurses are trained to recognise, understand, and foster posttraumatic growth.

Abstract
MRI is the gold standard for treatment response assessments for glioblastoma. However, there is no consensus regarding the optimal interval for MRI follow-up during standard treatment. Moreover, a reliable assessment of treatment response is hindered by the occurrence of pseudoprogression. It is unknown if a radiological follow-up strategy at 2-3 month intervals actually benefits patients and how it influences clinical decision making about the continuation or discontinuation of treatment. This study assessed the consequences of scheduled follow-up scans post-chemoradiotherapy (post-CCRT), after three cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy [TMZ3/6], and after the completion of treatment [TMZ6/6]), and of unscheduled scans on treatment decisions during standard concomitant and adjuvant treatment in glioblastoma patients. Additionally, we evaluated how often follow-up scans resulted in diagnostic uncertainty (tumor progression versus pseudoprogression), and whether perfusion MRI improved clinical decision making. Scheduled follow-up scans during standard treatment in glioblastoma patients rarely resulted in an early termination of treatment (2.3% post-CCRT, 3.2% TMZ3/6, and 7.8% TMZ6/6), but introduced diagnostic uncertainty in 27.7% of cases. Unscheduled scans resulted in more major treatment consequences (30%; p < 0.001). Perfusion MRI caused less diagnostic uncertainty (p = 0.021) but did not influence treatment consequences (p = 0.871). This study does not support the current pragmatic follow-up strategy and suggests a more tailored follow-up approach.

Abstract
At least 5% of cancer diagnoses are attributed to a causal pathogenic or likely pathogenic germline genetic variant (hereditary cancer syndrome-HCS). These individuals are burdened with lifelong surveillance monitoring organs for a wide spectrum of cancers. This is associated with substantial uncertainty and anxiety in the time between screening tests and while the individuals are awaiting results. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) sequencing has recently shown potential as a non-invasive strategy for monitoring cancer. There is an opportunity for high-yield cancer early detection in HCS. To assess clinical validity of cfDNA in individuals with HCS, representatives from eight genetics centers from across Canada founded the CHARM (cfDNA in Hereditary and High-Risk Malignancies) Consortium in 2017. In this perspective, we discuss operationalization of this consortium and early data emerging from the most common and well-characterized HCSs: hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, Lynch syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, and Neurofibromatosis type 1. We identify opportunities for the incorporation of cfDNA sequencing into surveillance protocols; these opportunities are backed by examples of earlier cancer detection efficacy in HCSs from the CHARM Consortium. We seek to establish a paradigm shift in early cancer surveillance in individuals with HCSs, away from highly centralized, regimented medical screening visits and toward more accessible, frequent, and proactive care for these high-risk individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The term "scanxiety" has been coined to describe the anxiety commonly associated with individuals undergoing cancer-related imaging. Despite the prevalence and severity of scanxiety across various clinical and demographic populations, there remains a significant lack of qualitative insights from existing studies that effectively capture patients' experiences of scanxiety in their own words. Therefore, this review addresses the following research question: What are the experiences of scanxiety distress among people affected by cancer across the cancer care continuum? DATA SOURCES Following the PRISMA methodology, a meta-aggregation of qualitative studies was performed, encompassing patients of all age groups who had been diagnosed with cancer or were indicated for a cancer-related scan. Of the 556 articles screened, 15 were deemed eligible for inclusion in the analysis. CONCLUSION The three overarching themes of 1) experience of "scan-itis," 2) experience of "patient-clinician support," and 3) development of self-management strategies reveal the complex and interconnected factors that influence scanxiety in individuals undergoing cancer-related imaging. These findings emphasized distress experienced by patients during the waiting period for scan results, the act of viewing the results, and even the delivery of "bad" news. Consequently, patients expressed a strong desire for increased information, communication, and empathy from attending healthcare providers. Patients also report a myriad of self-coping strategies to manage their scanxiety well before, during, and after their scan appointment. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE The study highlights the need for targeted interventions for those undergoing cancer-related scans, including increased awareness and education for health professionals regarding scanxiety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with pulmonary nodules (PNs) often suffer from the psychological burden of their disease and trap in sleep problems. This is insufficiently identified and addressed in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological distress and sleep quality among PN patients and identify potential risk or protective factors for sleep quality. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study, which included 731 PN patients who visited the thoracic clinic of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital. Each participant completed a structured questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The reliability of the HADS (Cronbach's α = 0.944) and PSQI (Cronbach's α = 0. 0.757) in this study was satisfactory. RESULTS A total of 328 patients (44.9%) had PSQI global scores > 5, indicating poor quality of sleep. Age ≥ 50 years (OR 1.88, 95% CI 1.35-2.58; P < 0.001), female (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.05-2.33; P = 0.028), detection of nodule for 7-12 months (vs for more than 24 months, OR 2.14, 95%CI 1.18-3.89, P = 0.013), anxiety (OR 1.78, 95% CI 1.17-2.71; P = 0.007) and depression (OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.16-2.92; P = 0.010) were independent risk factors for impaired sleep quality. A significant correlation revealed that sleep quality was positively correlated with both anxiety and depression (Spearman r = 0.342, P < 0.001 and Spearman r = 0.314, P < 0.001, respectively). All dimensions of the PSQI scale were significantly decreased in both anxiety group and depression group compared to the psychologically normal group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Impaired sleep quality is highly prevalent among patients with PNs and associated with age, gender, time from the date of detection, anxiety and depression. Based on the finding of impaired sleep quality and psychological health, screening for psychological and sleep problems in PN patients will be of great clinical benefit.

Abstract
A cancer diagnosis is life altering and frequently associated with both acute and long-lasting psychosocial and behavioral distress for patients. The impact of a diffuse glioma diagnosis on mental health is an important aspect of the patient experience with their disease. This needs to be understood by neurosurgeons so these concerns can be appropriately addressed in a timely fashion and integrated into the multidisciplinary care of neuro-oncology patients. The relatively grave prognosis associated with diffuse gliomas, the morbidity associated with treatment, and the constant threat of developing a new neurological deficit all can negatively affect a patient's mental ability to cope and ultimately manifest in mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. The objective of this systematic review was to describe the variety of behavioral health disorders patients may experience following a glioma diagnosis and discuss possible treatment options. The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and PsycINFO databases were searched through July 1, 2022, using broad search terms, which resulted in 5028 studies that were uploaded to Covidence systematic review software. Duplicates, non-English-language studies, and studies with irrelevant outcomes or incorrect design were removed (n = 3167). A total of 92 articles reporting behavioral health outcomes in brain tumor patients were categorized and extracted for associations with overall mental health, anxiety, depression, distress, stress, pharmacology, interventions, and mental health in caregivers. The authors identified numerous studies reporting the prevalence of mental health disorders and their negative influence in this population. However, there is a paucity of literature on therapeutic options for patients. Given the strong correlation between patient quality of life and mental well-being, there is a considerable need for early recognition and treatment of these behavioral health disorders to optimize everyday functioning for patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a multidimensional phenomenon among cancer survivors. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the prevalence of FCR and its predictors among survivors of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in Korea. METHODS Participants who finished NSCLC treatment one or more months prior completed the Korean version of Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory-Short Form (K-FCRI-SF) and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) at single tertiary hospital in Korea. Multivariate-adjusted logistic regression and stepwise backward selection were used to determine the potential predictors of FCR. RESULTS Of the total 949 participants (mean age 63.4 ± 8.8 years, 44.3% women), 55.8% had high FCR. Female (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.44, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06-1.95), pathologic stage III (aOR 1.97, 95% CI 1.18-3.30), poor overall quality of life (aOR 1.42, 95% CI 1.03-1.95), poor emotional functioning (aOR 3.91, 95% CI 2.64-5.81), poor social functioning (aOR 1.87, 95% CI 1.31-2.68), and severe dyspnea (aOR 2.91, 95% CI 1.03-8.21) were independent predictors of high FCR. Old age (≥ 70 years) was included in the final model (aOR 0.74, 95% CI 0.51-1.06) but did not show clinical significance. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that high FCR was prevalent in NSCLC patients in Korea. To prevent this, we suggest screening and early detection of FCR based on sex, pathologic stage, quality of life, emotional and social functioning, and dyspnea. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Screening and early detection of FCR based on sex, pathologic stage, quality of life, emotional and social functioning, and dyspnea is suggested.

Abstract
Retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS) are rare malignancies that are potentially curable by complete surgical resection. A regular surveillance program is normally commenced following surgery due to the risk of local recurrence (LR), especially in low-intermediate grade disease, and distant metastases (DM), especially in high-grade RPS. Consensus guidelines usually advocate for more frequent imaging during the first 2-3 years and less intensive imaging over a prolonged period thereafter, reflecting the incidence pattern of LR and DM. Definitive evidence for the most effective imaging schedule has never been provided, and retrospective studies have not shown an association between follow-up intensity and survival. Improvement in the prediction of recurrence patterns has been sustained by prognostic dynamic nomograms, which are now capable of forecasting disease behaviour in each patient according to specific features. Incorporation of such tools in clinical practice may help to stratify patients and tailor ongoing surveillance to the risk of recurrence. This may help to relieve patients' anxiety while awaiting results of surveillance investigations, and also reduce the economic and environmental burden of repeated imaging. A randomized controlled study (SARveillance Trial) is proposed to shed light on this controversial topic, allowing clinicians to harmonize the follow-up protocol of patients undergoing surgery for RPS.

Abstract
Access to electronic medical record (EMR) patient portals made it easier for patients to quickly acquire the results of their radiology studies. However, there is little research on how well oncology patients understand the findings of radiology reports presented in the online portal without patient-physician discussion. This study assessed oncology patients' confidence and accuracy in interpreting radiology reports either with or without layman translations. A survey based on a radiology report was administered to oncology patients and caregivers. Two versions of the radiological report were randomly distributed, either a standard report or one with layman translations to evaluate participant understanding and accuracy of interpreting radiological results. Among 85 participants, a majority (67.8%) reported wanting patient portal access to radiological reports, yet less than a quarter (21.2%) felt confident in reading and interpreting radiological reports. Univariate binary logistic regression models showed that participants who read the lay report were 8 times more likely to find the radiology report easy to read. This research demonstrated that the inclusion of layman translation of standard radiology reports improves oncology patients' and caregivers' understanding of such reports with statistically significant and clinically meaningful increases in readability.

Abstract
PURPOSE People with primary malignant brain tumors (PMBT) undergo anti-tumor treatment and are followed up with MRI interval scans. There are potential burdens and benefits to interval scanning, yet high-quality evidence to suggest whether scans are beneficial or alter outcomes of importance for patients is lacking. We aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of how adults living with PMBTs experience and cope with interval scanning. METHODS Twelve patients diagnosed with WHO grade III or IV PMBT from two sites in the UK took part. Using a semi-structured interview guide, they were asked about their experiences of interval scans. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to analyze data. RESULTS Although most participants found interval scans uncomfortable, they accepted that scans were something that they had to do and were using various coping methods to get through the MRI scan. All participants said that the wait between their scan and results was the most difficult part. Despite the difficulties they experienced, all participants said that they would rather have interval scans than wait for a change in their symptoms. Most of the time, scans provided relief, gave participants some certainty in an uncertain situation, and a short-term sense of control over their lives. CONCLUSION The present study shows that interval scanning is important and highly valued by patients living with PMBT. Although interval scans are anxiety provoking, they appear to help people living with PMBT cope with the uncertainty of their condition.

Abstract
PURPOSE Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have revolutionized the treatment of locally advanced and metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs). Patients are experiencing prolonged survival but often at the expense of their health-related quality of life. It is not only the physical side effects that impact GIST patients' daily lives but also the psychological and social challenges they have to deal with. This qualitative study aimed to explore the psychological and social life challenges of GIST patients with locally advanced and metastatic disease on ≥ 5 years TKI treatment. METHODS Semi-structured interviews with 15 locally advanced and/or metastatic GIST patients and 10 medical oncologists with experience of delivering care to this specific patient group were conducted. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data. RESULTS Psychological challenges expressed by participants concerned fears, scanxiety, negative change in emotion and mood, doubts about their treatment and follow-up, living with uncertainty, lack of understanding from others or healthcare professionals, and constantly being reminded of their illness. Challenges regarding social health included financial difficulties, challenges in relationships, concerns about fertility and parenting, work, and impact on social activities. CONCLUSION The reported psychological and social challenges can significantly hamper the overall quality of life of GIST patients. Some challenges were clearly underreported and hardly recognized by medical oncologist, as they may tend to focus on the physical side effects and clinical outcomes of treatment. Therefore, it is essential to take the patient's perspective into account in research and clinical practice to ensure optimal care for this patient group.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study investigated whether a 360° virtual counselling environment (360°VCE) was more effective at decreasing patients' anxiety than routine standard of care counselling for patients undergoing coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), and if there was any difference in the process times for both of these groups. METHODS A total of 86 patients underwent CCTA in this randomised controlled trial. Patients were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The 360°VCE was developed using spherical panoramic images and non-immersive 360° technology. The primary outcome, anxiety, was measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The secondary outcome, CCTA process time, was measured from the time of arrival in the department until end of examination. RESULTS Pre-scan anxiety was lower among patients in the 360°VCE group immediately before CCTA in comparison to patients in the control group (p = 0.015). Women demonstrated higher levels of anxiety than men in both groups. No between-group differences were discerned in CCTA process time. CONCLUSION Access to 360°VCE can reduce patients' pre-CCTA anxiety levels. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The presented results can be used to improve patient counselling and care, reduce anxiety among patients undergoing CCTA, and optimise the CCTA examination procedure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Lung cancer survivors often suffer from physical, emotional and social long-term effects of disease and treatment. Caregivers are also affected by the cancer diagnosis throughout the course of the disease and are frequently burdened by high levels of psychosocial stress. However, little is known about how follow-up care after the completed treatment phase can help to improve long-term quality of life. In the context of patient-centred cancer care, considering the survivors' and caregivers' perspectives is an important step toward improving care structures. We therefore explored how lung cancer survivors and their caregivers experience follow-up examinations and their possible psychosocial effects on everyday life in order to shed light on what support is helpful for improving their quality of life. MATERIAL AND METHODS 25 survivors after curative lung cancer treatment and 17 caregivers underwent a face-to-face semi-structured, audio-recorded interview that was analysed using qualitative content analysis. RESULTS Especially burdened cancer survivors and caregivers described recurring anxiety before a follow-up appointment influencing their everyday life. At the same time, follow-up care also provided reassurance of still being healthy and helped regain a sense of security and control until the following scan. Despite possible long-term consequences in everyday life, the interviewees reported that the survivors´ psychosocial needs were not explicitly assessed or discussed. Nevertheless, the interviewees indicated that conversations with the physician were important for the success of "good" follow-up care. CONCLUSION Anxiety surrounding follow-up scans, also known as "scanxiety", is a common problem. In this study, we expanded on previous findings and found a positive aspect of scans, namely regaining a sense of security and control, which can strengthen the psychological well-being of the survivors and their families. To optimize follow-up care and improve the quality of life of lung cancer survivors and caregivers, strategies to integrate psychosocial care, like the introduction of survivorship care plans or increased use of patient-reported outcomes, should be explored in the future.

Abstract
Background: Patients with early-stage lung cancer undergo potentially curative therapy, and continue to undergo regularly scheduled CT scans to determine if cancer has reappeared, spread, or stayed the same. This process can be fraught with anxiety, coined 'Scanxiety'. The present study examined how coping and scan-related anxiety fluctuate within-person before one's scan. Method: Twenty five individuals with lung cancer who had received curative intent treatment (M age = 62.33, [SD = 8.10], 96% women, 80% white) participated in the study, which had two parts. First, participants provided information about proactive coping and scan-related anxiety every 30 days. Next, a daily diary study was implemented for 7 consecutive days before their CT scan, as well as the day of their CT scan, where participants reported on their daily anticipatory coping and scan-related anxiety. The 25 participants provided 59 monthly and 146 daily surveys for analysis. Results: Multilevel models revealed significant main effects of monthly proactive coping on monthly scan-related anxiety, as well as daily anticipatory coping on daily scan-related anxiety. On months when participants decreased their use of proactive coping, they also reported decreases in scan-related anxiety for that month. On days when participants reported decreases in outcome fantasy and stagnant deliberation, they reported decreases in scan-related anxiety for that day. Finally, a significant interaction was found such that on days when middle-aged adults reported increases in problem analysis, they also reported increases in scan-related anxiety for that day. Conclusion: These findings are the first to characterize how participants' coping and scanxiety fluctuate in the months and days prior to their CT scans. Results indicated that focusing on the present may be more beneficial in reducing scan-related anxiety rather than thinking about the future. Future work should implement strategies to reduce scanxiety by focusing on the present among those with lung cancer.

BACKGROUND Primary brain tumor (PBT) patients experience higher levels of distress and anxiety than other solid tumor patients, particularly at the time of clinical evaluation when uncertainty about disease status is high ("scanxiety"). There is promising evidence supporting use of virtual reality (VR) to target psychological symptoms in other solid tumor patients, though PBT patients have not been studied extensively in this context. The primary aim of this phase 2 clinical trial is to establish the feasibility of a remote VR-based relaxation intervention for a PBT population, with secondary aims designed to determine preliminary efficacy of improving distress and anxiety symptoms. METHODS PBT patients (N = 120) with upcoming MRI scans and clinical appointments who meet eligibility will be recruited to participate in a single arm trial conducted remotely through the NIH. Following completion of baseline assessments, participants will complete a 5-min VR intervention via telehealth using a head-mounted immersive device while under supervision of the research team. Following the intervention, over the course of 1 month patients can use VR at their discretion with follow-up assessments done immediately post-VR intervention, as well as 1 week and 4 weeks later. Additionally, a qualitative phone interview will be conducted to assess patient satisfaction with the intervention. DISCUSSION Use of immersive VR is an innovative interventional approach to target distress and scanxiety symptoms in PBT patients who are at high risk for experiencing these symptoms leading into their clinical appointments. Findings from this study may inform design of a future multicenter randomized VR trial for PBT patients and may aid in development of similar interventions for other oncology populations. Abstract
PURPOSE Cancer patients experience distress and anxiety when undergoing imaging studies to monitor disease status, yet these symptoms are not always appropriately identified or well-managed. This interim analysis of a phase 2 clinical trial explored feasibility and acceptability of a virtual reality relaxation (VR) intervention for primary brain tumor (PBT) patients at the time of clinical evaluation. METHODS English speaking, adult PBT patients with previous reports of distress and upcoming neuroimaging were recruited between March of 2021 and March 2022. A brief VR session was done within 2 weeks prior to neuroimaging with patient-reported outcomes (PROs) collected before and immediately post-intervention. Self-directed VR use over the next 1 month was encouraged with additional PROs assessments at 1 and 4 weeks. Feasibility metrics included enrollment, eligibility, attrition, and device-related adverse effects with satisfaction measured with qualitative phone interviews. RESULTS Fifty-five patients were approached via email, 40 (73%) responded and 20 (50%) enrolled (9 declines, 11 screen fails). 65% of participants were ≤ 50 years, 50% were male, 90% were White/non-Hispanic, 85% had good KPS (≥ 90), and most were on active treatment. All patients completed the VR intervention, PROs questionnaires, weekly check-ins, and qualitative interview. Most (90%) reported frequent VR use and high satisfaction and only 7 mild AEs were recorded (headache, dizziness, nausea, neck pain). CONCLUSION This interim analysis supports feasibility and acceptability of a novel VR intervention to target psychological symptoms for PBT patients. Trial enrollment will continue to assess for intervention efficacy. TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT04301089 registered on 3/9/2020.

Abstract
Complete en bloc surgical resection offers the best opportunity for the cure of primary retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS). The potential for disease recurrence, in the form of both loco-regional recurrence and distant metastases, underpins the rationale for postoperative surveillance. There is a paucity of high-quality evidence underpinning follow-up for RPS patients, and most practice guidelines draw from expert opinion and evidence from soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities. The available observational retrospective data analysis has failed to demonstrate that high-intensity radiological surveillance improves the overall survival in patients. The lack of a robust evidence base has given rise to variations in approaches to post-operative surveillance strategies adopted by specialist centres managing RPS across the world. More high-quality prospective research is needed and planned to more clearly support surveillance approaches that balance oncologic outcomes, patient-centric care, and health service value. Risk stratification tools exist and are available for use in routine practice. Their use will likely support more individualised post-operative surveillance moving forward. Surveillance will likely be underpinned by serial radiological imaging for the medium term. However, developments in genomics offer hope for biomarkers such as ctDNA to impact patient care positively in the future and further support individualised patient care pathways.

Abstract
Background: Scan-related anxiety ("scanxiety") is distressing to people living with and beyond cancer. We conducted a scoping review to promote conceptual clarity, identify research practices and gaps, and guide intervention strategies for adults with a current or prior cancer diagnosis. Methods: Following a systematic search, we screened 6820 titles and abstracts, evaluated 152 full-text articles, and selected 36 articles. Definitions, study designs, measurement methods, correlates, and consequences of scanxiety were extracted and summarized. Results: The reviewed articles included individuals living with current cancer (n = 17) and those in the post-treatment phase (n = 19), across a breadth of cancer types and disease stages. In five articles, authors explicitly defined scanxiety. Multiple components of scanxiety were described, including those related to scan procedures (e.g., claustrophobia, physical discomfort) and scan results (e.g., implications for disease status and treatment), suggesting varied intervention approaches may be needed. Twenty-two articles used quantitative methods, nine used qualitative methods, and five used mixed methods. In 17 articles, symptom measures specifically referenced cancer scans; 24 included general measures without reference to scans. Scanxiety tended to be higher among those with lower education levels, less time since diagnosis, and greater baseline anxiety levels (three articles each). Although scanxiety often decreased immediately pre- to post-scan (six articles), participants reported the waiting period between scan and results to be particularly stressful (six articles). Consequences of scanxiety included poorer quality of life and somatic symptoms. Scanxiety promoted follow-up care for some patients yet hindered it for others. Conclusions: Scanxiety is multi-faceted, heightened during the pre-scan and scan-to-results waiting periods, and associated with clinically meaningful outcomes. We discuss how these findings can inform future research directions and intervention approaches.

Abstract
Cancer diagnosis and treatment constitute profoundly stressful experiences involving unique and common challenges that generate uncertainty, fear, and emotional distress. Individuals with cancer must cope with multiple stressors, from the point of diagnosis through surgical and adjuvant treatments and into survivorship, that require substantial psychological and physiological adaptation. This can take a toll on quality of life and well-being and may also promote cellular and molecular changes that can exacerbate physical symptoms and facilitate tumor growth and metastasis, thereby contributing to negative long-term health outcomes. Since modifying responses tostressors might improve psychological and physiological adaptation, quality of life, and clinical health outcomes, several randomized controlled trials have tested interventions that aim to facilitate stress management. We review evidence for the effects of stress management interventions on psychological and physiological adaptation and health outcomes in cancer patients and survivors and summarize emerging research in the field to address unanswered questions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Glioblastoma is the most common malignant primary brain tumour with a median overall survival of 12-15 months (range 6-17 months), even with maximal treatment involving debulking neurosurgery and adjuvant concomitant chemoradiotherapy. The use of postoperative imaging to detect progression is of high importance to clinicians and patients, but currently, the optimal follow-up schedule is yet to be defined. It is also unclear how adhering to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines-which are based on general consensus rather than evidence-affects patient outcomes such as progression-free and overall survival. The primary aim of this study is to assess MRI monitoring practice after surgery for glioblastoma, and to evaluate its association with patient outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS ImagiNg Timing aftER surgery for glioblastoma: an eVALuation of practice in Great Britain and Ireland is a retrospective multicentre study that will include 450 patients with an operated glioblastoma, treated with any adjuvant therapy regimen in the UK and Ireland. Adult patients ≥18 years diagnosed with glioblastoma and undergoing surgery between 1 August 2018 and 1 February 2019 will be included. Clinical and radiological scanning data will be collected until the date of death or date of last known follow-up. Anonymised data will be uploaded to an online Castor database. Adherence to NICE guidelines and the effect of being concordant with NICE guidelines will be identified using descriptive statistics and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Each participating centre is required to gain local institutional approval for data collection and sharing. Formal ethical approval is not required since this is a service evaluation. Results of the study will be reported through peer-reviewed presentations and articles, and will be disseminated to participating centres, patients and the public.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Scan-related anxiety ("scanxiety") refers to the fear, stress, and anxiety in anticipation of tests and scans in follow-up cancer care. This study assessed the feasibility of Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) for real-world, real-time capture of scanxiety using patients' personal smartphone. METHODS Adolescent and Young Adult survivors of childhood cancer were prompted to complete EMA surveys on a smartphone app three times per day for 11 days (33 surveys total) around their routine surveillance scans. Participants provided structured feedback on the EMA protocol. RESULTS Thirty out of 46 contacted survivors (65%) enrolled, exceeding the preregistered feasibility cutoff of 55%. The survey completion rate (83%) greatly exceeded the preregistered feasibility cutoff of 65%. Participants generally found the smartphone app easy and enjoyable to use and reported low levels of distress from answering surveys. Participants reported significantly more daily fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) and negative affect in the days before compared to the days after surveillance scans, aligning with the expected trajectory of scanxiety. Participants who reported greater FCR and scanxiety using comprehensive measures at baseline also reported significantly more daily FCR around their surveillance scans, indicating validity of EMA items. Bodily threat monitoring was prospectively and concurrently associated with daily FCR, thus warranting further investigation as a risk factor for scanxiety. CONCLUSIONS Findings indicate the feasibility, acceptability, and validity of EMA as a research tool to capture the dynamics and potential risk factors for scanxiety.

Abstract
Retroperitoneal liposarcomas are a rare entity and are comprised mostly of the well-differentiated and dedifferentiated subtypes. Eight-year survival ranges from 30% to 80% depending on histologic subtype and grade. Surgery is the cornerstone of treatment and compartment resection is the current standard. Mesenteric liposarcomas are extremely rare and comprise more high-grade lesions, with poorer prognosis of 50% 5-year overall survival. They are managed with a similar aggressive surgical approach. This review presents the current management of retroperitoneal and mesenteric liposarcomas.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This qualitative study sought to learn from patients with cancer -- in their own words -- about anxiety associated with medical testing. METHODS Patients with cancer or a history of cancer were recruited from an oncology clinic. After oral consent, each was interviewed in person. A semi-structured interview guide was used to help focus the interviews. Interviews were then recorded, transcribed, and analyzed with rigorous qualitative methods. RESULTS Twenty patients are the focus of this report, which highlights 2 main themes from the data. The first is that anxiety related to medical testing is a real entity. Although not all patients experienced it, those who did described it as such ("I was a little apprehensive." "It's the anticipation." "I don't think it bothers me until I get near the time for testing."). The second theme focused on coping. Patients offered insight on how to cope ("So I just deal with it and work." "And don't let myself sink into a pity pot …." "See your scan as a tool instead of … instead of um … a death sentence, I suppose."). CONCLUSION In patients with cancer, the anxiety from medical testing is real, could perhaps be mitigated by sharing coping methods from patient to patient, and merits further study.

Abstract
To explore the application value of multimedia education and nursing intervention in a coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). A total of 120 patients who underwent a 256-slice spiral CCTA examination in our hospital from April 2019 to April 2020 were selected. Patients were divided into two groups of 60 patients each, that is, the control group and the observation group, using a random number table method. The control group received traditional education before an examination, and patients were given routine breathing training. The observation group was given multimedia education and nursing intervention. The heart rate (HR), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and respiratory rate in the two groups were observed. The psychological status, imaging quality, and incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. The HR, DBP, SBP, and respiratory rate of the observation group were all lower compared to those in control group, and the differences were statistically significant ( p < 0.05). Following multimedia education and nursing intervention, the anxiety and depression scores of patients in the observation group were considerably lower compared with those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant ( p < 0.05). Observation group image quality I level higher than the control group, and the proportion of patients with the difference was statistically significant ( p < 0.05). The proportion of grade II to IV patients was lower in the observation group than in the control group; however, the difference was not statistically significant ( p > 0.05). There was a significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (χ2, p = .031). For patients undergoing a CCTA examination, multimedia education and nursing intervention can effectively improve their immediate psychological state, control their heart rate, and blood pressure before the examination, reduce the incidence of adverse reactions and improve imaging quality, thereby improving the overall reliability of a clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pulmonary nodules (PNs) are documented in up to 30% of computed tomography (CT) reports. PNs of indeterminate nature (IPN) have been reported to be associated with increased psychological distress and deterioration of the quality of life. Despite lack of solid evidence, severe anxiety or depression has been proposed to be one of the surgical indications in expert consensus for IPN management. So far, there is no established criterion to guide the decision-making process, or to ensure evidence-based management. This study aims to evaluate whether psychological distress could be a surgical indication for IPN, and to establish an evidence-based distress threshold for necessary surgical intervention. METHODS This prospective observational study in real-world setting will involve an expected sample size of 1,253 IPN patients from the thoracic clinic of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital. Web-based questionnaires powered by Wen Juan Xing (WJX) platform will be delivered to the patients for baseline data collection and psychological screening. Based on our pilot study, a total of 376 IPN patients with abnormal or borderline abnormal psychological states, as assessed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), will be followed for 1 year before proceeding to the final analysis. The planned study period is from Jan 1, 2021, to Sept 30, 2022, and will entail two HADS assessments at baseline and follow-up. Sleep quality and indicators of healthcare-seeking behavior, such as the number of unplanned clinic visits or CT scans per year, will be used as anchors of psychological state. Patients who undergo surgical resection against the follow-up plan will be enrolled into a surgical group (expected n=94), while those who adhere to their plan will be automatically classified as a follow-up group after 1-year follow-up (expected n=282). Statistical measures such as independent-samples t-test and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis will be used to assess the difference in psychological changes between the groups, and to generate an optimal threshold alerting surgical need. A Chi-square test or nonparametric test will be used to compare the baseline characteristics. Contributors to psychological burden and their effect sizes will be evaluated using general linear regression. DISCUSSION To date, data on the psychological benefits of surgical resection of IPN remains scanty. Evidence-based procedure of patient selection using appropriate psychological screening tools is crucial in improving the quality of care and preventing overtreatment. This protocol describes the rationale and methodology to address this unmet clinical need using real-world data, aiming to bridge the gap between clinical guidelines and real-world practice. Abstract
Little is known about the impact of standardized imaging surveillance on anxiety levels and well-being of patients after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR). We hypothesize that patient anxiety levels increase just before receiving the imaging results compared with standard anxiety levels. METHODS Prospective cohort study from November 2018 to May 2020 including post-EVAR patients visiting the outpatient clinics of 4 Dutch hospitals for imaging follow-up. The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) was used. Patients completed the PROMIS Anxiety v1.0 Short Form (SF) 4a, PROMIS-Global Health Scale v1.2, and PROMIS-Physical Function v1.2 SF8b at 2 time points: prior to the result of the imaging study (T1: pre-visit) and 6-8 months later (T2: reference measurement). Mean T-scores at T1 were compared to T2, and T2 to the general 65+ Dutch population. RESULTS Altogether 342 invited patients were eligible, 214 completed the first questionnaire, 189 returned 2 completed questionnaires and 128 patients did not participate. Out of 214 respondents, 195 were male (91.1%) and the mean (standard deviation) age was 75.2 (7.0) years. There were no significant differences between T1 and T2 in anxiety levels (0.48; 95% confidence interval[CI] -0.42-1.38), global mental health (0.27; 95% CI -0.79-0.84), global physical health (0.10; 95% CI -0.38-1.18) and physical function (0.53; 95% CI -0.26-1.32). Compared with the 65+ Dutch population, at T2 patients experienced more anxiety (3.8; 95% CI 2.96-5.54), had worse global physical health (-3.2; 95% CI -4.38 - -2.02) and physical function (-2.4; 95% CI -4.00 - -0.80). Global mental health was similar (-1.0; 95% CI -2.21 - 0.21). CONCLUSIONS Post-EVAR patients do not experience more anxiety just before receiving surveillance imaging results than outside this period, but do suffer from more anxiety and worse physical outcomes than the 65+ Dutch population.

Abstract
PURPOSE The patients' burden with asymptomatic meningiomas and patients with good clinical outcome after meningioma resection often remains neglected. In this study, we aimed to investigate the longitudinal changes of psychological distress and quality of life in these patient groups. METHODS Patients with conservatively managed (CM) or operated (OM) meningiomas and excellent neurological status, who were screened for psychological distress during the follow-up visit (t1), were included. We performed a follow-up mail/telephone-based survey 3-6 months (t2) after t1. Distress was measured using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Distress Thermometer (DT), 36-item Short Form (SF-36), and Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI). RESULTS Sixty-two patients participated in t1 and 47 in t2. The number of patients reporting increased or borderline values remained high 3 months after initial presentation, with n = 25 (53%) of patients reporting increased anxiety symptom severity and n = 29 (62%) reporting increased depressive symptom severity values. The proportion of distressed patients according to a DT score remained similar after 3 months. Forty-four percent of patients reported significant distress in OM and 33% in CM group. The most common problems among distressed patients were fatigue (t2 75%) and worries (t2 50%), followed by pain, sleep disturbances, sadness, and nervousness. Tumor progress was associated with increased depression scores (OR 6.3 (1.1-36.7)). CONCLUSION The level of psychological distress in asymptomatic meningiomas and postoperative meningiomas with excellent outcome is high. Further investigations are needed to identify and counsel the patients at risk.

Abstract
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive form of lung cancer associated with an increased risk of develping brain metastases (BM), which are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) was first introduced in the 1970s with the aim of reducing BM incidence and improving survival and quality of life (QoL). Prospective clinical trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing BM incidence and improving survival, across all stages of the disease following response to induction chemotherapy. Despite its long history, "unknowns" surrounding PCI use still exist and there are particular subgroups of patients for which its use remains controversial. PCI is known to cause neurocognitive toxicity which can have a significant impact on a patient's QoL. Strategies to minimise this, including the use of hippocampal avoidance radiotherapy techniques, neuroprotective drugs and stereotactic radiosurgery in place of whole brain radiotherapy for the treatment of BM, are under evaluation. This review offers a summary of the key PCI trials published to date and the current treatment recommendations based on available evidence. It also discusses the key questions being addressed in ongoing clinical trials and highlights others where there is currently a knowledge gap and therefore where further data are urgently required.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in pretreatment planning of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) remains controversial. Understanding changes in short-term health-related quality of life associated with breast MRI would allow for a more complete comparative effectiveness assessment. OBJECTIVE To assess whether there are changes in patient-reported quality of life associated with breast MRI among women diagnosed with DCIS. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This cohort study was a substudy of a nonrandomized clinical trial conducted at 75 participating US institutions from March 2015 to April 2016. Women recently diagnosed with unilateral DCIS who were eligible for wide local excision and had a diagnostic mammogram within 3 months of study registration were included. A total of 355 women met the eligibility criteria and underwent the study MRI. Data analysis was performed from June 3, 2020, to July 1, 2021. EXPOSURES Participants underwent bilateral breast MRI within 30 days of study registration and before surgery. Information on patient-reported testing burden for breast MRI was collected after MRI and before surgery. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome of this substudy was the patient-reported testing burden of breast MRI, measured by the Testing Morbidities Index (TMI) summated scale score. The TMI is a 7-item instrument that evaluates the temporary changes in quality of life associated with imaging before, during, and after the test (0 represents the worst possible, 100 the hypothetical ideal test experience). RESULTS Of the 355 women who met the eligibility criteria, 244 (69%) completed both questionnaires and were included in this analysis. The median age was 59 years (range, 34-85 years). The mean MRI TMI summated scale score was 85.9 (95% CI, 84.6-87.3). Of the 244 women, 142 (58%) experienced at least some fear and anxiety before the examination, and 120 women (49%) experienced fear and anxiety during the examination. A total of 156 women (64%) experienced pain or discomfort during the examination. In multivariable analyses, greater test-related burden was associated with higher levels of cancer worry (regression coefficient, -2.75; SE, 0.94; P = .004). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this cohort study, a clinically meaningful breast MRI testing burden among women with DCIS was revealed that was significantly associated with cancer worry. Understanding the potential quality-of-life reduction associated with MRI, especially when used in combination with mammography, may allow development of targeted interventions to improve the patient experience.

Abstract
PURPOSE Scan-associated anxiety ('scanxiety') is a problem for people with advanced cancer. We aimed to determine the prevalence, severity and associations of scanxiety in this population. METHODS People with advanced cancer and a computed tomography scan within the last 4 months completed a multicentre survey including self-rated presence (yes/no) and severity (distress thermometer, 0-10) of scanxiety, state anxiety (STAI-6), clinical anxiety and depression (HADS), and fear of progression (FOP-Q-SF). Associations with scanxiety were evaluated. RESULTS There were 222 participants: mean age 64 years (range 26 to 91), female (61%), most common cancer types (breast 37%, lung 19%, colorectal 16%) and > 1 year since cancer diagnosis (82%). Sixty-two percent had a scan within the last month, and 70% reported waiting > 2 days for the result. Over half (55%) of participants experienced scanxiety. On multivariable analysis, scanxiety was more prevalent in participants who were younger (mean age 62 years with v 66 years without scanxiety, p = 0.02) and more remote (v major city, OR 2.6, p = 0.04). Among participants with scanxiety, the mean severity score was 6 (range 1-10) with peak severity occurring when waiting for scan results. On multivariable analysis, scanxiety was 1.2 points higher in participants who had been diagnosed within the past year (v > 1 year, p = 0.04) and was higher in participants who had higher STAI-6 scores (β = 0.06, p = 0.004). CONCLUSION Scanxiety is common and can be severe. Strategies to reduce scanxiety are needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This report investigates the impact of systemic treatments (chemotherapy or immunotherapy) with(out) loco-regional radiotherapy, on HRQoL, toxicity and neurocognitive functioning (NCF) in locally advanced and metastatic non-small cell lung cancer patients enrolled in the PRO-Long study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data on patient-reported HRQoL and fourteen toxicities was collected, while NCF was tested, up to one-year post-treatment. HRQoL was assessed using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30. Lung cancer, treatment and neuro-psychological related toxicities were scored with the Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. NCF was evaluated with six neurocognitive tests. Mixed model analyses were conducted to determine statistical significance (p = .01). Meaningful clinical important differences (MCIDs) were applied for changes in HRQoL and NCF data, while toxicities were compared to baseline values. RESULTS In total, 50 patients were enrolled. Overall HRQoL (p = .357) nor its domains (physical, p = .643; role, p = .069; emotional, p = .254; cognitive, p = 494; social, p = .735) changed significantly over time. Meaningful improvements in overall HRQoL were seen in 22, 38 and 39% and deteriorations in 22, 5 and 28% of patients at 2-3, 6 and 12 months respectively post-treatment. Overall toxicity (p = .007), lack of appetite (p = .001), nausea (p = .004) and dysphagia (p = .000) significantly decreased over time. Treatment caused acute toxicity, such as dyspnoea (45%) and memory problems (42%), but also alleviated pre-existing symptoms, including lack of appetite (32%), anxiety (29%) and depression (28%) at 2/3 months. The NCF domains of visual memory (p = .000) and cognitive processing speed (p = .000) showed significant improvements over time. In terms of MCIDs, at 2-3 months (18%) and 6 months (15%), verbal memory was particularly impacted; at 12 months, visual memory (18%) and executive function (18%) deteriorated primarily. CONCLUSION The results suggest that therapy has no significant negative impact on overall HRQoL, its domains, and NCF. About one-third of patients reported a meaningful improved HRQoL at 1 year post-treatment. Treatment caused toxicity, but also alleviated pre-existing symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study sought to describe how high- versus low-frequency surveillance imaging practices among providers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) impact overall survival (OS) and time to recurrence of patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer in first remission. METHODS The study cohort included patients with stage II-IV high-grade epithelial ovarian cancer diagnosed in January 2001 through January 2017 who experienced recurrence after initial platinum-based chemotherapy. To determine usual imaging practices for providers at MSKCC, median frequency of CT or MRI of the abdomen/pelvis was calculated among patients with a long-term remission (defined as at least 1 year) treated by each provider. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine differences in OS and time to recurrence among patients treated by providers with high versus low imaging frequency practices, with additional subgroup analysis among patients with elevated CA-125 levels >35 U/mL at diagnosis. Chi-square tests were used to examine differences in the proportion of patients who enrolled in clinical trials or underwent secondary cytoreductive surgery (SCS) by imaging frequency. RESULTS A total of 543 patients were treated by providers with high imaging frequency (>1 scan every 12 months) and 141 were treated by providers with low imaging frequency (≤1 scan every 12 months). Time to recurrence was shorter among patients treated by providers with high versus low imaging frequency (18.0 vs 19.2 months; hazard ratio, 1.33; P=.003). Results were similar when restricted to patients with elevated CA-125 levels at diagnosis. There was no significant difference in OS, clinical trial enrollment, or SCS by imaging practice. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this retrospective analysis, patients with advanced ovarian cancer treated by high-frequency-imaging providers had earlier detection of recurrence. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify available literature on prevalence, severity and contributing factors of scan-associated anxiety ('scanxiety') and interventions to reduce it. DESIGN Systematic scoping review. DATA SOURCES Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, Ovid PsycINFO, Ovid Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, EBSCO CINAHL and PubMed up to July 2020. STUDY SELECTION Eligible studies recruited people having cancer-related non-invasive scans (including screening) and contained a quantitative assessment of scanxiety. DATA EXTRACTION Demographics and scanxiety outcomes were recorded, and data were summarised by descriptive statistics. RESULTS Of 26 693 citations, 57 studies were included across a range of scan types (mammogram: 26/57, 46%; positron-emission tomography: 14/57, 25%; CT: 14/57, 25%) and designs (observation: 47/57, 82%; intervention: 10/57, 18%). Eighty-one measurement tools were used to quantify prevalence and/or severity of scanxiety, including purpose-designed Likert scales (17/81, 21%); the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (14/81, 17%) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (9/81, 11%). Scanxiety prevalence ranged from 0% to 64% (above prespecified thresholds) or from 13% to 83% ('any' anxiety, if no threshold). Mean severity scores appeared low in almost all measures that quantitatively measured scanxiety (54/62, 87%), regardless of whether anxiety thresholds were prespecified. Moderate to severe scanxiety occurred in 4%-28% of people in studies using descriptive measures. Nine of 20 studies assessing scanxiety prescan and postscan reported significant postscan reduction in scanxiety. Lower education, smoking, higher levels of pain, higher perceived risk of cancer and diagnostic scans (vs screening scans) consistently correlated with higher scanxiety severity but not age, gender, ethnicity or marital status. Interventions included relaxation, distraction, education and psychological support. Six of 10 interventions showed a reduction in scanxiety. CONCLUSIONS Prevalence and severity of scanxiety varied widely likely due to heterogeneous methods of measurement. A uniform approach to evaluating scanxiety will improve understanding of the phenomenon and help guide interventions.

Abstract
Purpose: Cancer research and connected innovation processes often lack a major component; patient participation. We revisit three studies (a-c) in order to explore how Momentary contentment theory may be used to improve patient participation and psychosocial health. Method: We revisited data from the initial (a) classic grounded theory study on Momentary contentment, based on four years of observation and 14 interviews. It explains a way of dealing with life close to death and morbidity. In the imminence of danger the studied culture resembles the context of cancer patients. The two following studies used focus group interviews with (b) 19 cancer patients and (c) 17 relatives of cancer patients in southern Sweden. Results: We suggest a process where cancer patients are taught to be submissive and that the support they receive from health providers may be counterproductive to contentment; a patientification process. We present alternative ways for people to handle issues such as hope, waiting, knowledge gaps and healthcare navigation while living with cancer. We introduce an alternative to patientification and passive patients where active patients create their own safety and truly participates in their care.Conclusions: We propose clinical studies to introduce such a shift from patentification to co-creation of care.

Abstract
Background Primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors are often associated with high symptom burden and a poor prognosis from the time of diagnosis. The purpose of this study is to describe patient-reported outcomes (PRO) data from long-term survivors (LTS; ≥5-year survival post-diagnosis). Methods Clinical/treatment/molecular characteristics and PROs (symptom burden/interference (MDASI-BT/SP), perceived cognition (Neuro-QoL), anxiety/depression (PROMIS), and general health status (EQ-5D-3L)) were collected on 248 adult LTS between 9/2016 and 8/2019. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were used to report results. Results Participants had a median age of 47 years (19-82) and were primarily White (83%) males (51%) with high-grade tumors (59%) and few mutations. Forty-two percent of the 222 brain tumor LTS reported no moderate-to-severe symptoms, whereas 45% reported three or more; most common symptoms were fatigue (40%), difficulty remembering (29%), and drowsiness (28%). Among spine tumor LTS (n = 42), nearly half reported moderate-to-severe weakness, pain, fatigue, and numbness/tingling, with 72% experiencing activity-related interference. Severe anxiety, depression, and cognitive symptoms were reported in up to 23% of the sample. Brain tumor LTS at higher risk for severe symptoms were more likely to be young, unemployed, and have poor KPS (Karnofsky Performance Status), whereas high symptom-risk spinal cord tumor LTS had poor KPS and received any tumor treatment. Conclusions Findings indicate LTS fall into distinct cohorts with no significant symptoms or very high symptom burden, regardless of tumor grade or mutational profile. These LTS data demonstrate the need for survivorship care programs and future studies to explore the symptom trajectory of all CNS tumor patients for prevention and early interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIV E To summarise current evidence for the utility of interval imaging in monitoring disease in adult brain tumours, and to develop a position for future evidence gathering while incorporating the application of data science and health economics. METHODS Experts in 'interval imaging' (imaging at pre-planned time-points to assess tumour status); data science; health economics, trial management of adult brain tumours, and patient representatives convened in London, UK. The current evidence on the use of interval imaging for monitoring brain tumours was reviewed. To improve the evidence that interval imaging has a role in disease management, we discussed specific themes of data science, health economics, statistical considerations, patient and carer perspectives, and multi-centre study design. Suggestions for future studies aimed at filling knowledge gaps were discussed. RESULTS Meningioma and glioma were identified as priorities for interval imaging utility analysis. The "monitoring biomarkers" most commonly used in adult brain tumour patients were standard structural MRI features. Interval imaging was commonly scheduled to provide reported imaging prior to planned, regular clinic visits. There is limited evidence relating interval imaging in the absence of clinical deterioration to management change that alters morbidity, mortality, quality of life, or resource use. Progression-free survival is confounded as an outcome measure when using structural MRI in glioma. Uncertainty from imaging causes distress for some patients and their caregivers, while for others it provides an important indicator of disease activity. Any study design that changes imaging regimens should consider the potential for influencing current or planned therapeutic trials, ensure that opportunity costs are measured, and capture indirect benefits and added value. CONCLUSION Evidence for the value, and therefore utility, of regular interval imaging is currently lacking. Ongoing collaborative efforts will improve trial design and generate the evidence to optimise monitoring imaging biomarkers in standard of care brain tumour management.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A better understanding of the molecular, genetic and immunological characteristics of cancer and the introduction of new systemic treatment regimens in the last decades, has led to better treatment outcomes and increased survival rates for patients with previously short lived cancers. However, there is no uniform description to refer to this growing group of patients with advanced cancer who now respond to new systemic treatments for longer periods. Furthermore, little is known about the unique psychological challenges these patients face, living with ongoing uncertainty about the course of their disease and life expectancy. The objective of this scoping review is to identify the psychological aspects experienced by, and the definitions used to refer to patients with advanced cancer receiving lifelong systemic treatment. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This review will be among the first to summarise literature on the psychological issues in the growing group of advanced cancer patients undergoing long-term systemic treatment. Articles will be retrieved from six databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) and reviewed for eligibility by two investigators independently. Definitions and psychological challenges will be extracted and narratively summarised following a descriptive approach. Furthermore, results will contribute in providing a uniform definition for this patient group, and help to identify knowledge gaps to give direction to further research in this field. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION No ethical approval is required. The results of the scoping review will be submitted for publication to a scientific journal and presented at relevant conferences.

Abstract
Background Primary brain tumors (PBTs) remain incurable, with a typically poor prognosis and significant symptom burden for patients. Virtual reality (VR) can potentially alleviate some of the negative aspects of illness by allowing individuals to escape to environments where they can experience more positive thoughts and emotions. Given promising findings for VR use in other clinical populations, there is increasing interest to use VR for symptomatic improvement in oncology patients. The purpose of this review was to analyze the literature of VR-related interventions for symptom management in adult PBT and other solid-tumor patients, which will guide development of future VR interventions in these populations. Methods A systematic search of EMBASE, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was performed using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines with predefined eligibility criteria. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were selected for review. Results Findings showed promising evidence that VR can improve anxiety for solid-tumor patients, with mixed results reported for pain, distress, depression, and mood. There was significant heterogeneity in methodological approaches across the literature and the majority of studies were underpowered and lacked rigorous study designs. Qualitative findings demonstrated a high degree of participant satisfaction with VR use, with very few adverse side effects reported. Conclusions Findings from this review suggest that VR can be used as an innovative delivery system for targeted interventions to improve symptoms in PBTs and other solid-tumor patient populations, though additional well-designed clinical trials are needed to better establish its efficacy.

Abstract
Aim: A monitoring strategy for metastatic breast cancer patients (M-MBC) has been little studied. Materials & methods: This retrospective study analyzed a consecutive cohort of 382 MBC patients to analyze different M-MBC strategies to identify factors influencing intensive M-MBC. Results: Elevated baseline serum tumor markers (STM) was the strongest factor associated with increased use of STM tests. Having more frequent oncology office visits was associated with more intensive chemotherapy/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using. Increased use of imaging tests was associated with participation to clinical trial. Single and elderly patients were less likely to have frequent testing. Having clinically measurable disease was less likely to have more intensive M-MBC. Conclusion: STM testing and scans were frequently ordered in M-MBC. In the present study, strategies are little influenced by clinico-pathological characteristics.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to explore the impact of the timing of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) measurements in clinical care on the obtained HRQoL scores in glioma patients, and the association with feelings of anxiety or depression. Methods: Patients completed the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)’s Quality of Life Questionnaires (QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BN20), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) twice. All patients completed the first measurement on the day of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan (t = 0), but the second measurement (t = 1) depended on randomization; Group 1 (n = 49) completed the questionnaires before and Group 2 (n = 51) after the consultation with the physician. Results: median HRQoL scale scores on t0/t1 and change scores were comparable between the two groups. Between 8–58% of patients changed to a clinically relevant extent (i.e., ≥10 points) on the evaluated HRQoL scales in about one-week time, in both directions, with only 3% of patients remaining stable in all scales. Patients with a stable role functioning had a lower HADS anxiety change score. The HADS depression score was not associated with a change in HRQoL. Conclusions: Measuring HRQoL before or after the consultation did not impact HRQoL scores on a group level. However, most patients reported a clinically relevant difference in at least one HRQoL scale between the two time points. These findings highlight the importance of standardized moments of HRQoL assessments, or patient-reported outcomes in general, during treatment and follow-up in clinical trials.
