Abstract
Polyamic acid (PAA) is a flexible polymer and has abundant valuable hydrophilic groups. Herein, we developed an ultra-low pressure ultrafiltration (UF) membrane by integrating PAA into the polyethersulfone (PES) matrix via the "in-situ polycondensation" method. PAA was well compatible with PES and distributed uniformly in the membrane. The introduction of PAA improved membrane hydrophilicity. Meanwhile, the membrane pore structures were also refined. The membrane exhibited an excellent permeability under ultra-low pressure due to its improvement of hydrophilicity and pore structures. Under 0.3 bar, compare with the water flux of PES membrane, PES/PAA membrane improved nearly 2 times (571.05 L/(m2·h)), with a high BSA rejection (≥90%). Even under a lower pressure, 0.1 bar, >300 L/(m2·h) still can be achieved. Interestingly, the membrane we developed could maintain a high performance after drying, and then is very suitable for dry preservation. PES/PAA membrane showed a high oil removal (≥92%) and could remove oil from water effectively. Besides, the membrane exhibited excellent anti-oil-fouling properties. The flux recovery rate of PES/PAA (70.0%) far exceeds that of PES (37.9%) after three filtration and cleaning cycles. The membrane we developed is very valuable in oily wastewater treatment.

Abstract
In this study, a blend membrane consisting of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and tertiary amine containing random copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate-r-dimethylamino-2-ethyl methacrylate) (P(MMA-r-DMAEMA)) was fabricated and utilized as an adsorptive membrane for micropollutants (anionic dye and heavy metal ions) removal from aqueous solutions. Cross-linking the random copolymer by p-xylylene dichloride (XDC) produced the membrane with improved copolymer retention ratio and stability, while slightly variated physicochemical properties. Besides, the fluxes of crosslinked blend membranes dramatically increased from 0.7 ± 0.1 L/(m2h) to 118.6 ± 5.9 L/(m2h). Then the present blend membrane was carried out adsorption and filtration experiments to investigate the influence of various of operation parameters including initial solution pH value, contacting time, initial solution concentration, and recycling efficiency on micropollutants removal. The experimental results showed that the removal of the anionic dyes and heavy metal ions on this tertiary amine containing blend membrane was a pH-dependent process with the maximum adsorption capacity at the initial solution pH of 3.5 for anionic dyes and 6.0 for metal ions, respectively. The membrane showed highly efficient capture of sunset yellow (above 99%). Meanwhile, the captured sunset yellow was recovered and concentrated with a small volume of alkaline solutions at pH 10.0, which simultaneously regenerated the membrane for its reuse. In a 3-cycle capture-recovery test, the membrane demonstrated a high sunset yellow recovery ratio and a volumetric concentration ratio as high as 400%. Our study provides an alternative strategy for functionalized membrane fabrication, micropollutants removal and recovery.

Abstract
Design of efficient enzyme carriers, where enzymes are conjugated to supports, has become an attractive research avenue. Immobilized enzymes are advantageous for practical applications because of their convenience in handling, ease of separation, and good reusability. However, the main challenge is that these traditional enzyme carriers are unable to regulate the enzymolysis efficiency or to protect the enzymes from proteolytic degradation, which restricts their effectiveness of enzymes in bioapplications. Enlightened by the stimuli-responsive channels in the natural cell membranes, conjugation of the enzymes within flat-sheet stimuli-responsive porous polymer membranes (SR-PPMs) as artificial cell membranes is an efficient strategy for circumventing this challenge. Controlled by the external stimuli, the multifunctional polymer chains, which are incorporated within the membranes and attached to the enzyme, change their structures to defend the enzyme from the external environmental disturbances and degradation by proteinases. Specifically, smart SR-PPM enzyme carriers (SR-PPMECs) not only permit convective substrate transfer through the accessible porous network, dramatically improving enzymolysis efficiency due to the adjustable pore sizes and the confinement effect, but they also act as molecular switches for regulating its permeability and selectivity. In this review, the concept of SR-PPMECs is presented. It covers the latest developments in design strategies of flat-sheet SR-PPFMs, fabrication protocols of SR-PPFMECs, strategies for the regulation of enzymolysis efficiency, and their cutting-edge bioapplications.

Abstract
In this work, to overcome the fouling phenomenon of hydrophobic polymer membranes, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was blended with hydrophilic polycarbonate (PC) to prepare ultrafiltration membranes via the nonsolvent-induced phase separation method. The effects of PC content on membrane morphology, pore size distribution, and surface porosity were characterized and investigated by FE-SEM and image analyzer software. Solubility parameters calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation showed that PVDF and PC are compatible and the results were confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry and wide angle X-ray diffractometry. The long-term chemical stability against NaOH and mechanical property before and after the abrasion test of the prepared membranes were also characterized by dynamic thermomechanical analysis. It was found that the hydrophilicity, water flux, abrasion resistance, and antifouling properties as the performance criteria of polymeric membranes were improved because of the presence of PC, and the separation efficiency of PVDF/PC membranes is much higher than that of the pristine PVDF membrane. The exemplary water filtration performances of these polymer membranes are harnessed here in this work to purify raw water polluted by natural organic matters, addressing the key environmental issue of water contamination.

Abstract
To overcome the organic-/bio- fouling of the membrane, a dual-functional ultrafiltration membrane containing quaternary ammonium and zwitterionic polymers via quaternization and surface radical polymerization was designed, and its antifouling and antibacterial behavior was studied. In this work, poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(methyl methacrylate-co-dimethylamino-2-ethyl methacrylate) (PVDF/P(MMA-co-DMAEMA)) blend membrane was quaternized by p-chloromethyl styrene (p-CMS), and the double bonds were introduced onto the membrane surface, which further participated in the polymerization of zwitterionic monomers on the membrane surface. The results indicated that the resultant membrane exhibited obviously improved hydrophilicity and weak positive charge (isoelectric point, 7.49). The membrane presented higher flux recovery ratio and lower protein adhesion compared with the pure PVDF membrane. Meanwhile, the membrane showed high-efficiency broad-spectrum antibacterial performance, that is, the bacteria killing efficiency of S. aureus and E. coli reached 98.2% and 97.0%, respectively. Moreover, the membrane effectively inhibited bacterial adhesion, which is important for the long-term antibacterial properties of membrane. This antifouling and antibacterial PVDF membrane may have potential in the long-term filtration process, especially when dealing with microbiologically contaminated water.

Abstract
The development of highly efficient membranes technology using low-pressure driven filtration process, is one of the principal challenges in the wastewater treatment field, especially those aimed at the removal of trace heavy metals. In this work, a novel positively charged tight ultrafiltration (PCTUF) membrane was developed to remove heavy metal cations (Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+) from contaminated waters via electrostatic repulsion mechanism. The PCTUF membrane was fabricated from a new polymer with poly (vinyl chloride co dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate), P (VC-co-DMA) via a nonsolvent induce phase separation (NIPS) process and following facile surface quaternization. The quaternization conditions, the pore structures and chemical properties of the membranes were investigated in detail. The optimally quaternized membrane possessed a positively charged surface and 3.27 nm charged channel with the water permeability of 84 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. The rejections of heavy metal cations surpassed 95% for feed solutions containing 10 ppm heavy metal. Moreover, the influences of feed concentrations and the operating condition with pressure and pH on the membrane performances were also investigated. The results revealed that the prepared PCTUF membrane with its high perm-selectivity performance provides a worthy reference for highly efficient removal of heavy metal cations.

Abstract
Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with simultaneous high rejection of divalent cations and anions and high water permeation were designed and fabricated via interfacial polymerization (IP) on three-channel capillary ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. MWCNTs-COOH were modified with poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) and the as-synthesized MWCNTs-PAMAM were embedded into the inner polyamide skin-layer of the NF membranes by incorporating them into a piperazine (PIP) aqueous solution, followed by IP with trimesoyl chloride (TMC). The rigid MWCNTs and the dendrimer PAMAM molecules endow the as-fabricated NF membranes with high porosity and good hydrophilicity. Additionally, the -NH2 groups of PAMAM introduce some positive sites into the polyamide layer. The as-prepared NF membranes with incorporated MWCNTs-PAMAM exhibit a pure water flux of 48.7 L m-2 h-1 and 92.6% and 88.5% rejection for Na2SO4 and MgCl2, respectively, at 4 bar. Moreover, the NF membranes display high rejection for sulfates and metal cations, including heavy metal ions. The practicability of the membranes for mine-wastewater treatment was tested, and the membranes showed above 80% rejection of heavy metals and solution flux of about 30 L m-2 h-1. In addition, their separation performance and stability were satisfactory during the long-term run. The high rejection of the membranes for metal cations is ascribed to the positive sites offered by MWCNTs-PAMAM and the narrow membrane pores since both electrostatic repulsion and size exclusion play a role during membrane filtration. The good separation performance of the membranes for multivalent anions and heavy metal cations illustrates their potential for applications in heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Thin-film composite poly(amide) (PA) membranes have greatly diversified water supplies and food products. However, users would benefit from a control of the electrostatic interactions between the liquid and the net surface charge interface in order to benefit wider application. The ionic selectivity of the 100 nm PA semi-permeable layer is significantly affected by the pH of the solution. In this work, for the first time, a convenient route is presented to configure the surface charge of PA membranes by gamma ray induced surface grafting. This rapid and up-scalable method offers a versatile route for surface grafting by adjusting the irradiation total dose and the monomer concentration. Specifically, thin coatings obtained at low irradiation doses between 1 and 10 kGy and at low monomer concentration of 1 v/v% in methanol/water (1:1) solutions, dramatically altered the net surface charge of the pristine membranes from -25 mV to +45 mV, whilst the isoelectric point of the materials shifted from pH 3 to pH 7. This modification resulted in an improved water flux by over 55%, from 45.9 to up 70 L.m-2.h-1, whilst NaCl rejection was found to drop by only 1% compared to pristine membranes.
